What Are the Reasons Why Your Dodge Journey Won’t Start?

The reasons your Dodge Journey won’t start are a damaged car battery, a failing alternator, a defective starter, a corroded battery, and a clogged gasoline filter. Other possible causes include a faulty pump, a blown fuse, rodent damage, and bad spark plugs.

– Damaged Car Battery

Your car won’t start if you have a damaged or dead battery. If you have a dead battery, you won’t hear any sounds when you use the key normally inside the ignition. In most cases, weather-related issues drain a car battery. If the car battery is affected by extreme heat or cold, it can destroy or kill the battery and prevent your vehicle from starting.

Once you suspect the battery may be damaged or dead, you should confirm by testing the battery. Use a multimeter or hydrometer to check the DC voltage of the battery. If the reading is less than 1 volt for a 9-volt battery, it means the battery is dead.

– Failing Alternator

If you have inspected the battery and discovered that it isn’t the source of the problem, the next component to check is the alternator. The alternator is an integral component of the vehicle’s internal combustion engine that charges the battery while the engine runs. The alternator converts chemical energy to electrical energy for charging and replenishing the vehicle’s battery and other electrical components.

Thus, if the alternator stops working, the battery will eventually die. You can test if your vehicle’s alternator works using a multimeter to measure the battery’s voltage while the engine runs. If the multimeter gives a low voltage, the alternator is not working correctly.

– Defective Starter

Another reason why your car will refuse to start is if the starter is defective. The starter is the component that turns the engine over when you use the ignition. Although the average lifespan of a starter motor is between 100,000 and 150,000 miles, it can break down if the vehicle has been used for a long time.

You can test if your starter is in good condition by using a multimeter to measure the voltage of the starter with the key in the start position. If the multimeter reads a low voltage, the starter is failing and should be fixed soon. Also, you can detect a bad starter if the key makes a clicking sound when you turn it to start the engine.

– Blocked Fuel Filter

The gasoline filter is the vehicle component that prevents dirt and rust particles from mixing with the fuel so they don’t damage the engine. Although the filter doesn’t wear out like other mechanical parts, it can become clogged by dirt, dust, or airborne particles. When these materials block the filter, its permeability will drastically reduce. Thus, the fuel pressure will reduce as well.

While the engine can still work if the gasoline filter is clogged, there is a stage where the filter gets too dirty and the engine won’t function correctly. A dirty filter often causes ignition difficulty because it depletes the fuel supply going into the engine. In some cases, the blocked gasoline filter will cause the engine not to start when the key is turned in the ignition.

– Defective Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of your Dodge vehicle is responsible for conveying the right amount of fuel to the engine at a certain pressure. So, if the pump fails, the engine will not start. One of the common causes of pump failure is wear and contamination. Also, if a power contact is broken or the pump lever is damaged, the pump will malfunction.

However, before the pump stops working, it will give you signs. Symptoms like the engine breaking down regularly, the car experiencing difficulty starting, and the engine jerking indicate that you have a failing pump, which you should fix immediately.

– Corroded Battery

If there is corrosion on your battery’s contacts, it can lead to loss of contact and reduced current flow, affecting the engine’s operation. The engine will no longer start properly when a battery has become corroded. Corrosion on the battery can prevent the engine from starting when the key is turned in the ignition.

To test if a corroded battery is causing the vehicle’s starting problems, you should investigate the battery’s contacts. Next, raise the rubber covers on the battery terminals and check for signs of corrosion. If you see white or silvery-green deposits on the terminals, that strongly indicates corrosion.

– Defective Remote Car Starter Battery

If your Dodge Journey uses a push start/stop button to turn on the ignition and is not starting, the problem may be due to a weak key fob battery. A weak battery renders the key fob inoperative and cannot start the vehicle. More so, if the battery is weak, the door will stop opening or closing at the push of a button.

Nevertheless, you can still start the vehicle because the battery only transmits the signal for locking and unlocking. The car must be started manually using the key, and the same applies to the doors.

– Damaged Fuse

Sometimes, a damaged fuse could be why your Dodge Durango is not starting when you turn the key. If one or more fuse inside the box is blown, the engine will not start. This is because fuses limit the electrical current flowing through wires to protect specific components. In other words, the fuse box protects the electronics within the vehicle.

If the fuse has a problem, it could affect the ignition relay, which is located inside the fuse box. The ignition relay transfers electricity from the battery to the ignition components so that you can start the car quickly, so it would help if you inspected all the fuses inside the fuse box for signs of damage.

– Bad Spark Plugs

Spark plugs provide the spark of electricity that ignites the combustion needed to start the vehicle. If the spark plugs are inoperative or damaged , the car will not start. Typically, the spark plugs are not affected by a defect. Instead, the problem lies with the plug connections on the ignition system.

If any plug connections come loose, the vehicle will not start, and the only remedy is to tighten it. Defective or failed spark plugs will prevent the car from starting, so they should be fixed.

How To Fix Your Dodge Journey’s Starting Problem?

You can fix your Dodge Journey’s starting problem by changing the alternator, installing a new battery, cleaning corrosion from the battery, and changing the starter. Other remedies to the problem are cleaning the gasoline filter, replacing the filter, and installing new spark plugs.

– Change the Alternator

To fix a defective alternator, discard it and replace it with a new one. First, disconnect the battery and loosen the bolts that hold the alternator in place to replace the failing alternator. Take out the old alternator and install the new unit in its place. Then reconnect the battery and start the ignition to check if the alternator works correctly.

– Install a New Battery

If your car battery is dead, jumpstarting won’t work. Your only option is replacing it with a new battery. You can carry out the replacement yourself by using a socket wrench set and screwdriver. First, locate the battery under your vehicle’s hood to perform this operation.

After that, disconnect the negative and positive cables from the battery’s terminals. While doing this, ensure both terminals don’t touch each other because it will cause an electrical spark. Next, gently remove the old battery then install the new unit by connecting the cables to the battery. Test the battery by starting the engine.

– Remove Corrosion From the Battery

To fix a corroded battery, you will have to remove the corrosion from the battery. This will require you to remove the poles from the battery. The first step is to unplug the black cable from the negative pole and remove the red positive pole cable. After removing the battery, you can start cleaning the terminals.

As a precaution, when using metal pliers to remove a cable from the pole clamp, ensure you don’t touch any other vehicle parts. Once you clean the terminals, reconnect the battery and test it.

– Install New Spark Plugs

You’ll need to replace bad spark plugs with new ones for the engine to start. To replace the spark plug, first remove the plug wire and the coil-on-plug (COP) attached to the spark plug end. Next, unscrew the plug with a spark plug socket. Put the new spark plug in place and reconnect the plug wires and COP. Start the engine to test the spark plug.

– Change the Starter Motor

If the starter is the reason why your vehicle is not starting, then you should replace it with a new one. You will need a socket set and ratchet to remove the starter from the car. The first step is disconnecting the negative battery cable so you won’t experience any electrical shock while working on the starter. Then locate the starter, usually near the front of the engine on the passenger side.

After locating the starter, use the socket to loosen the two bolts holding it. Then carefully pull out the old starter from the engine and install the new starter in its place. Retighten the bolts to secure the starter and reconnect the negative battery cable. Test the new starter by turning the key in the ignition.

– Fix the Gasoline Filter

You can fix a dirty gasoline filter by cleaning it. To clean the filter, you must first locate it because the location varies for different vehicles. Also, ensure no fuel is exposed to the spray by using a clamp on the hose. Place a container under the filter to catch all the remaining fuel.

Insert a hose inside the detached filter and spray it with a special liquid so everything inside flows out. After spraying, dry the filter for about an hour, then install it back into position. However, cleaning is no longer possible if the filter is fully clogged. You will have to replace it.

Dodge Journey: Won’t Start When Cold → Diagnosis

Journey Won't Start When Cold

Extreme weather can be very difficult on your Dodge Journey.  If there is an issue it often make itself known when conditions are at their worst.  When it’s extremely hot. it’s the cooling system that is put to the test.  In the winter, the vehicle won’t start when it is cold.

There are a few different reasons that can cause this, but it’s usually your Journey’s battery that can’t handle turning the engine when it’s cold.

It very well could be the cold weather that is keeping your Journey from starting.  But, you don’t want to rule out that it’s just not starting, and it  happens to be cold.  Check out Dodge Journey Not Starting if this seems it may be an issue for you.

Dodge Journey:  Won’t Start Cold – Causes

Hard Start Cold Dodge Journey

1. Battery Capacity Diminished

Far and away the number one reason that your Journey won’t start in the cold is the battery.  A battery has two different ratings, cranking amps and cold cranking amps.  Cold cranking amps are the batteries ability to start turn the engine over when it is cold.

Battery capacity diminishes with time and use.  So it may have enough cranking capacity to start the vehicle when it is warm, but when it’s cold, it just isn’t enough to turn the engine over anymore.

2. Wrong Battery

If you happened to have purchased a battery when the weather was warm, and now less than a year later it’s not starting your Journey, you may have purchased a battery that doesn’t have the cold cranking capacity that your car needs to get started.

This often happens when you have a six cylinder model, and you get the battery for a four cylinder.  They don’t have quite enough capacity to turn over a heavier motor when it’s really cold.

How to Start Dodge Journey in Cold Weather

3. Wrong Oil Viscosity

If you put a heavier oil in during the warmer months, it’s not as likely to keep your Journey from starting.  But, in the winter, it’ll make itself known.  The heavier molecules in the thicker oil can keep the engine from turning over fast enough to start.  For instance, maybe you bought 10W-30 when the manufacturer called for 5W-30.

4. Water in Fuel Line

Condensation can build up in the gas tank as temperatures change.  If the condensation finds its way into your Dodge Journey’s fuel line, it can freeze and leave the engine unable to turn over.  If the engine is cranking fast, as though the battery is fine, this is a definite possibility.

How to Start Your Journey in the Cold

Here are some tried and true ways to start your car in the cold.  They are presented in a way that would help you troubleshoot a car that you may be sitting in right now in the order that makes most sense for getting you moving right away.  Most of the time it’s going to be a battery related issue, so that’s what we are focusing on.

1. Turn on All of the Accessories and Lights

This may sound counterintuitive when the battery isn’t working very well to begin with.  What you are trying to do is give your Journey’s battery a little time to “wake up”.  Once you do that go ahead and turn the key to the “on” position, but don’t start the car for at least 10 seconds.  This gives the fuel pump plenty of time to prime the injectors.  Now, go ahead and try turning the engine over and see if it’ll start.

2. Warm the Battery

If you are at home, and aren’t in a rush, you can unhook the battery and take it inside.  This will allow it to heat up to a temperature that’ll get the electrons in it moving.  Leave it inside for a few hours.  This can really help it crank the car over.  Be careful handling the battery.

3. Jump Start

Jumping the Journey will get it moving around again in no time.  Jump starting utilizes the power from another vehicles battery and alternator to charge your battery and help the vehicle start right there on the spot.  You don’t want to let the engine cool all the way down, as it probably won’t start on its own until it’s warm outside.

4. Replace the Battery

You can take the battery into the local parts store to have it tested.  That would be prudent before outright replacing it.  You should look up the cold cranking requirement for your particular Journey’s engine and model year.

You want to get a battery that can handle at a minimum what the manufacturer recommends.   Cold cranking amps are a standard.  A battery must crank for 30 seconds at 0° with a minimum voltage in order to meet it.

Conclusion:  Journey Won’t Start in the Cold

If any of the battery related issues ended up being the reason why your Dodge Journey wouldn’t start, it’s time to replace the battery.  If it warms back up outside, you may get a few good starts out of it, but its days are numbered.

How many miles on car.  Has it been scanned for codes, often a good starting point.

Might be time to have a shop look at it, guessing gets expensive. Maybe TIPM module . It can be bypassed with a temporary home made harness to prove if it is problem, pricy part to buy. If lightning bolt symbol electronic throttle body can prevent starting, but there should be codes usually. Also a pricy part to buy.

Are the injectors firing, the plugs should be wet with fuel.

A stretched timing chain could prevent starting, not  easy to check.  Need to line up timing marks on crank and cams. Probably codes from this type of problem as well. Not a common issue unless really high mileage.

Like

126, 530 miles..... Codes are P0365, P000b, P0017, P2172, P0562

We do get the lighting bolt symbol and low voltage but changed the battery.

I'll have to check the injectors.

Most those codes are voltage related. No timing related codes so I doubt timing chain issues, mileage not crazy high either.

Is the negative battery post temperature sensor plugged back in and not damaged, it can affect operation of car. Sometimes new batteries don’t have a decent charge, try running a charger on it for a few hours. Might be something simple, try the calibration procedure for throttle/accelerator pedal units.

Lightning bolt is for a major electrical issue, it should clear itself with proper charged battery.

ECU Accelerator Pedal Reset Procedure Note Timing is critical for this to work! 1. Turn the ignition switch to on. Dash gauges lit. Don t start the engine! 2. Wait 3 seconds. 3. Fully depress and release the accelerator pedal 5 times within 5 second. 4. Wait 7 to 10 seconds. 5. Fully depress the accelerator pedal for approximately 10 seconds. At this point the check engine light starts blinking quickly indicating Diagnostic Test Mode II (Self-diagnostic results) has started. 6. Release accelerator pedal and wait 5 to 10 seconds. 7. Fully depress the accelerator pedal for 10 seconds. At this point the check engine light should change to blinking slowly indicating “Erasing ECU Memory”. 8. Release the accelerator pedal and turn the ignition switch to off. 9. Restart the engine. The check engine light should be out. Note: If the check engine light doesn't blink as described in steps 5 & 7, then the ECU isn't reset. * If above didn't work, disconnect the battery negative and pump the brake to discharge the ECU capacitors. This method is almost foolproof as long as all ECU control parameters are within their normal ranges. Resetting The Throttle Body Calibration (this st

Tried the  ECU Accelerator Pedal Reset Procedure last night...didn't work. Also the brake petal is hard to push down. We fully charged the new battery as well. Sensor is plugged back in good. It's hard to read or clear codes when it won't run.

Codes are usually cleared with ignition on and car not running. Was lightning symbol on when the car first died , or after the new parts were added ?

What is the battery voltage with the ignition turned on ?  No arcing incidents during battery/alternator change.

Yes it was on when it died... battery voltage 10

Unfortunately the low voltage condition is still there, 10 volts won’t run a car normally.

Try jump starting car, leave cables attatched for 5 mins before trying. Cycle on ignition with cables attached to clear the lightning bolt symbol first. Then try starting with cables still hooked up. Push button is finicky for good voltage feed.

Sitting for a bit with new battery may have drained it, something not switched off. Need that new battery charged up. Bluetooth module is most common parasitic draw over night, pull fuse if you have to temporarily. Fuse box at kick panel on passenger side, lots of links here explaining which fuse to pull if needed.

My brother opened up the engine says it's burnt all inside and I need a new one.

Sad

That’s tough, thanks for follow up. Compression test is best evaluation of an engine. Although if metal filings are every where you know it’s toast. LKQ engine is usually cheaper than rebuilding it. But there is some risk. Bad time of year for this kind of thing. Good luck.

Thanks for all the help, happy New year

Dodge Journey dead battery symptoms, causes, and how to jump start

Dodge Journey needs a healthy 12 volt battery for normal operation of the vehicle. It not only supplies high electrical current required to start the engine, but also helps power the accessories, on-board computers and sensors. So, what happens when this battery becomes too weak?

Dodge Journey

The most common symptoms of dead battery in Dodge Journey are slow engine crank, no start, dim lights, flickering dashboard lights and clicking noises when trying to start the engine. The most common causes of dead battery in Journey are internal degradation of the battery due to old age, and bad alternator – but can also be caused by parasitic draw, and if the vehicle has been parked for a long time.

1. Slow engine crank

The 12 volt battery is a vital component of the starting system in Dodge Journey. It powers the starter motor that turns over the engine. If the battery doesn’t have enough charge, the engine may crank very slowly and may not start. Slow crank is usually the first symptom of a dying battery.

Symptom: Slow engine crank sound

2. clicking noise and no start.

The leading cause of clicking noise and no start in Dodge Journey is weak battery. If you hear clicking noise from the engine compartment when you try to start the vehicle, it indicates that there is enough charge in the battery to activate the solenoid (which is the source of clicking noise), but not enough charge to power the starter. The starter motor requires high electric current to turn over the engine, whereas lights and wipers take very little current to operate – so don’t rule out weak battery even if electrical accessories work normally in your Journey.

3. Flickering dashboard lights

Another symptom of weak battery in Journey is flickering dashboard lights and/or rapid clicking noise when you try to start the engine. If there isn’t enough charge in the battery to power the starter motor, and you try to crank the engine, the battery voltage will get so low that it can’t properly power the lights, accessories and of-course the starter. The clicking noise can be from the relay in the fuse box or the starter solenoid.

Symptom: Rapid clicking sound

How to test the battery in journey.

The easiest method to check the 12v battery in Journey is by measuring the voltage with a multimeter. A healthy battery should have 12.6 volts or more when fully charged. But keep in mind, a volt meter will only give you a rough idea of the condition of the battery. Sometimes a battery showing over 12.4 volts may not be able to supply enough current to crank the engine.

dodge journey 2018 car won't start

Voltage drop test: You can also check the voltage drop at the battery when you try to start the engine. If the voltage drops too much, below 10 volts, your battery doesn’t have enough charge to start the engine. This can happen due to internal degradation of the battery, if the vehicle has been sitting for a long time, or if the alternator in your Journey has malfunctioned and not charging the battery properly.

How to jump start Journey

To rule out dead battery, your best course of action is to jump start your Journey using jumper cables and a healthy battery from another vehicle, or using a battery booster if available.

Requirements: The engine of both the vehicles should be off, and the transmission in Park.

  • Connect the red cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery in Journey.
  • Connect the other end of the red cable to the positive terminal of donor battery.
  • Connect the black cable to the negative terminal of donor battery.
  • Finally connect the other end of the black cable to any bare unpainted metal part of the body or engine of your Journey.
  • Start your Journey.
  • Remove the cables in the reverse order.

Warning: There is always a risk of burning up the alternator or other electrical components if the engine of the donor battery vehicle is running during jump start. Therefore it is recommended to keep the engine of the donor vehicle off when jump starting your Journey.

Replace the dead battery

If the battery in your Journey has become too weak and loses its charge quickly after recharging it by running the engine for some time or with a battery charger, its time to replace the old battery. Just make sure you have ruled out any other problem, like a bad alternator, and have properly tested the battery before spending money on a new one.

dodge journey 2018 car won't start

  • Then disconnect the positive terminal of the battery.
  • Remove all the bolts from the tie-down and take out the battery.
  • Clean the disconnected terminals and the surface under the battery.
  • Place in the new battery.
  • Screw in all the bolts and tighten them down. Make sure the battery is snug.
  • Then connect the negative terminal of the battery.
  • Apply some silicone grease on the terminals to prevent corrosion.

Causes of dead battery

Internal degradation of the battery.

The leading cause of dead battery in Dodge Journey is internal degradation due to old age. Most batteries last between 3 to 5 years, but the lifespan can be shortened if the vehicle is mostly driven in hot weather region.

Faulty alternator

The alternator in Journey converts mechanical energy from the engine to electricity that not only powers all the on-board accessories, but also charges the battery. If the alternator develops a fault and stops generating electricity, the entire electrical load of the vehicle will shift to the battery. This drains out the battery quickly as it is no longer getting charged by the alternator. You don’t need to replace the battery in this case.

dodge journey 2018 car won't start

Alternators can fail at any time, but generally they last over 100,000 miles. The easiest method to check the alternator is by measuring the voltage at the battery terminals when the engine is running.

dodge journey 2018 car won't start

Parasitic draw

If your Journey continues to draw excessive electric current from the battery after you turn off the ignition, it is called parasitic draw. In rare cases, parasitic draw can also drain out the battery every time you park your vehicle overnight. Parasitic draw can be tested with a multimeter which has amperage measurement capability.

Parked for a long time

Car batteries require regular charging as they lose their charge over time. If your Journey has been sitting in the garage for months, the battery will eventually drain out and you won’t be able to start the engine. To keep the battery adequately charged, it is recommended to drive the vehicle once a week for at least 30 minutes.

Poor battery connection can cause dead battery symptoms

It is possible the battery in your Dodge Journey is in good health, but the current flow is interrupted due to a loose electrical connection, a damaged wire, or corrosion on the battery terminals. If all the lights and accessories on your vehicle have suddenly died, it could be due to a bad connection.

Corrosion on battery terminals

Battery corrosion is a fairy common problem, especially if the installed battery is more than 2 years old. Corrosion occurs when the battery acid reacts with the metal terminals which can lead to loss of contact and reduced current flow. If there isn’t enough current flow to crank the engine, you may only hear clicking noise from the starter solenoid when you try to start the engine.

Check battery terminals

To know if your Journey starting problems are from dirty battery terminals, you need to investigate them. Lift the plastic covers over the terminals and check for any signs of corrosion. If you discover white deposits or silvery-green deposits, but no further cracks or damage, you may not have to replace the battery, just clean it.

dodge journey 2018 car won't start

Clean the battery terminals

Quick cleaning: There is a neat little trick with which you can clean corrosion on the battery terminals of your Journey in under a minute. Pour hot boiling water over the corroded terminals and the corrosion will just melt away. Do one terminal at a time and don’t let water puddle on the top of the battery touch both terminals at the same time, this can short the battery.

Thorough cleaning: To thoroughly clean the battery in your Dodge Journey, you have to remove the terminal cables first, which requires no special knowledge, just a little concentration, as the order is very important. First remove the black cable from the negative terminal using a wrench or a plier. Next you can unplug the red positive terminal cable. Be careful not to touch both terminals with your metal tool, it will be one expensive mistake. Once the battery has been removed from the circuit, you can start cleaning the corroded battery with sandpaper or wire brush. After cleaning, reconnect the cables in reverse order, positive first, then negative.

Poor ground connection can cause dead battery symptoms

What is a ground connection.

The negative terminal of the battery is connected to the body/chassis of Journey, called a ground connection. The engine also requires a ground connection to function, but the way the engine is mounted, it does not allow the electric current to flow between the engine and the body (due to non-conductive rubber insulated engine mounts). For this purpose, a ground strap/wire is used to connect the engine and the chassis.

What happens when the ground connection goes bad?

If the ground connection of the chassis or the engine goes bad in your Journey due to rust or corrosion, you will face all sorts of electrical issues, including clicking noises and no start problem. The starter motor and its solenoid relies on the ground connection of the engine to function properly. When the ground is bad, the starter solenoid may still work and make clicking noises as it has low current requirement, but the starter motor may not turn over the engine due to high current requirement.

How to check if the ground connection is good?

You can check the quality of the ground connection in Journey by doing a conductivity test between the negative terminal of the battery and the engine. Take a multimeter, change its settings to ohms symbol. Touch one probe to the negative terminal of the battery, and the other probe to any exposed metal part of the engine. The reading should be at or very close to zero ohms. Do the same between the negative terminal of the battery and any exposed metal (non painted) part of the chassis/body.

Inspect and clean the ground connections

If the conductivity test fails, check the condition of the ground connections in your Journey. Inspect the connectors of the ground cables (battery to body, body to engine) for any signs of rust or corrosion. Clean the contacts with a sandpaper.

If your Dodge Journey is hard to start, has slow crank, or makes clicking noise when you try to start the engine, it most probably is due to dead battery. But before replacing the battery, you should rule out any other problems that may cause the dead battery symptoms, e.g. bad alternator, loose battery connection, or poor ground connection. Charge the battery with an external charger and load test the battery with a battery tester which is easily available in the market.

You obviously did not know where the battery is located on a Dodge Journey of any year. FYI it is located in front of the driver side wheel and you can not get to the terminals unless you take the wheel off and remove the plastic wheel well material. There are terminals under the hood for jump starting.

Dodge Journey Key Not Detected: Causes & Fixes

Dodge Journey Key Not Detected

The “Key Not Detected” on your Dodge Journey is a warning sign often associated with issues with the key fob. It will normally pop up when the driver attempts to switch on the vehicle, and the computer system cannot pick up a signal from the key fob.

The warning message will come if any factor disrupts the communication between the key fob and the ECM. Once the push-start button is pressed and the key’s signal is not detected, the vehicle will not come, and the error will come up. Many factors could stop the vehicle from picking up signals from the key fob. These factors include dead key battery, damaged receiver module, dead car battery, and more.

We will examine what a “Key Not Detected” means in a Dodge Journey. Also, explore the causes of this issue and how it could be fixed.

Meaning of Dodge Journey Key Not Detected

A Dodge Journey “Key Not Detected” is a warning message showing that the vehicle cannot communicate with the key fob, especially when you try to start the car.

What is a key fob? If you are unfamiliar with the term, it is a device that opens and unlocks the vehicle. Its most important function is its ability to start the car through the push-to-start function.

The Push-to-start function in the Dodge Journey uses low-frequency communication. Once the start button is pressed, the engine computer picks up a signal from the key fob, which should be in the car at the time.

Once the computer picks up the signal, the ECM sends power to the engine for ignition.

Sometimes, the computer system does not pick up any signal from the key fob. Check the key fob and ensure it is in the vehicle; if it is, there is an issue with the device.

Without the ECM picking up signals from the key fob, the engine will not start.

Causes of Dodge Journey Key Not Detected

Many factors could cause a “Key Not Detected” warning message on your Dodge Journey dashboard. In most cases, it is an issue with the key fob. However, other issues could be responsible for the warning message, like damaged receiver modules.

Below are some of the major causes of “key Not Detected.”

Dead key fob battery

A major cause of the warning message “key Not Detected” is a dead battery. The Key fob uses a small button-like battery that powers it; unfortunately, it is not designed to last forever.

The key fob battery will weaken and must be replaced at a certain point. You will notice the need to change the battery when the range of the key reduces. Now, you must draw closer to the car to open or close the door or press the button multiple times.

You could also get a notification of the low battery on the dashboard of your Dodge Journey.

Receiver module issues or interference

Another cause of the “key Not Detected” warning message is when the receiver module is not working as it should.

What is the receiver module? A device inside the vehicle receives signals from the key fob. It then sends signals to other components depending on whether to open or lock the door or trunk and start the engine.

Sometimes, the signal from the key fob may be interfered with by other radio waves that do not allow the module to pick up the right signals. In other cases, the module might be damaged and unable to pick up any frequency.

Water damage to the key fob

If you expose your key fob to water, it could cause serious damage. You need to understand that the key is an electrical device, and it is not designed to be waterproof and will get damaged if exposed to a certain amount of water.

Dead vehicle battery

A dead Dodge Journey battery will stop the receiver module from picking up the key fob signal. The module receives power from the battery to function. Once there is no power flowing to the module, it will not work.

Until the battery is charged, you cannot access and switch on the vehicle using the keyfob.

Worn-out key fob

The key fob will get worn out after long usage due to exposure to dirt, moisture, and other working conditions.

You will notice that the key fob is worn when the buttons are harder to press, and it takes longer for the vehicle to respond to the key’s command.

Also, the battery contact may become worn out, loose, or corroded due to oxidation, vibration, and other factors. This will have the same effect as having a dead battery.

How to fix Dodge Journey Key Not Detected

Once you realize the Dodge Journey “Key Not Detected” warning message, you need first to figure out what the cause of the problem is. You can do this by inspecting all the vehicle components that could be the source of the issue.

Below are ways to fix a Dodge Journey “Key Not Detected.”

Replace the key fob battery

When the battery of your Dodge Journey key fob is dead, you need to replace it immediately. To do this, follow the steps below.

  • Find the small notch at the side of the key fob and insert a screwdriver or any other tool that can fit in.
  • Slowly pry open the case and separate it into two.
  • Find buttons like batteries and take note of how they were placed.
  • Insert the new batteries the same way the old ones were placed.
  • Snap the separated key fob back together and test the key.

Replace key fob

In case of water damage or extreme wear conditions, you may need a new key fob compatible with your vehicle. You can get this in an authorized Dodge dealership.

Charge or replace car battery

If you are faced with a dead battery car battery, the easy fix is to charge the battery. Sometimes, the issue might not be a dead battery; it could be that the terminals are corroded. In this case, you may need to have them clean. Make a baking soda and water mixture, using the mixture and a rag to clean the battery.

Fix module issue

To fix the receiver module, you need first to locate it. The module is under that dashboard, just behind the glove box. Once located, check the connections, wiring antenna, and other components.

Go ahead and replace damaged parts of the module if you can. A professional should do issues like software malfunction.

Final Thought!

If you are faced with a “Key Not Detected”, it is important that you have the issue solved fast before the key fob becomes completely nonfunctional. Fortunately, problems with the key fob can easily be fixed, and you may not require professional help. Also, it will not cost much to have the issue fixed, even if you have to replace the key.

How safe is Moscow for tourists?

dodge journey 2018 car won't start

Moscow is an enormous city. 12 million people live here and many others commute in from the Moscow Region for work each day. And although there is no particular danger for either tourists or locals, it is, as in any big city, always worth using common sense. We'll tell you how to avoid running into trouble and which areas you might want to avoid.

Is the city center safe?

dodge journey 2018 car won't start

“I was shocked to see people using their laptops in parks in the evening,” says Nicholas Font from Argentina, who visited Moscow in May. “Of course, I was careful with my belongings, but I wasn't afraid of wearing my bag in the city center.”

The city center (and it is a very big city center) is generally convenient and safe for walking around. Pedestrians enjoy wide sidewalks and relatively calm road traffic. There are tourist police (who speak English), not to mention the ordinary police. Of course, there is never any guarantee that you won’t encounter a thief, and so to stay on the safe side keep your documents and money in places that are inaccessible to others. Red Square, Nikolskaya Street and Arbat are the most touristy places, so it’s worth being a little more aware of pickpockets in these areas.

Remember that in Moscow the police can stop you to check your ID. But unless you have committed some kind of crime there is generally nothing to worry about: You just need to show your passport and visa. "I was asked to show my passport and visa three times. Once in St. Petersburg and twice in Moscow," says our reader Ghazali Khan from Dubai. "Police in Russia are polite and professional. Most of them don’t speak English, but they understand your gestures."

Can you walk around at night?

dodge journey 2018 car won't start

Have you heard the expression "Moscow never sleeps?" Well, this is very true. The city center is buzzing 24 hours a day, and even on the outskirts you are likely to see people out and about even late at night. On a Friday or Saturday night there are likely to be even more people out on the streets than in the daytime. Of course, when it is minus 20 degrees Celsius in the winter, it isn’t as much fun as in the summer, but the only time Moscow really feels deserted is on the morning of Jan. 1 .

According to a recent poll conducted by The Economist , Moscow came in at 37 out of 60 big cities around the world in its Safe City Index. (Tokyo, Singapore and Osaka were at the top of the list). In other words, the Russian capital is pretty much average when it comes to safety.

Is it safe to go to the suburbs?

dodge journey 2018 car won't start

As a general rule, the police record more crimes in the city center than elsewhere. For instance, 2,846 crimes—mainly robberies and muggings—were recorded in 2018 in the Presnensky District between Arbat and Moscow City.

At the same time, over the past year these numbers have gone down by 20 percent, according to the prosecutor's office.

The city suburbs, with the exceptions of the Maryino and Perovo districts, are generally regarded as quite safe. So if you have a desire to see how ordinary Muscovites live, don't hesitate to hop on the metro and ride out to Vladykino, for example. Just work out your route in advance as you might not run into many people who speak English out there.

What about public transport and taxis?

dodge journey 2018 car won't start

When Russia hosted the FIFA World Cup in 2018, there were many stories of unscrupulous taxi drivers charging tourists astronomical amounts, sometimes as high as a thousand dollars, for a trip from the airport to the center. In order to avoid such unpleasant surprises, avoid airport taxis altogether and instead download Uber or Yandex Taxi on your phone and then pay by card rather than with cash. You will see the cost of the journey at the time of booking, and this won't change when you arrive at your destination. And if you have a strong desire to leave a tip, you can do so online. For your information, the cost of a journey from the airport to the city shouldn’t cost more than $30 (unless you order a luxury car, of course). While you can also find official taxis at the airport, these will be significantly more expensive than ordering one off Yandex Taxi or Uber.

Travelling around the city by metro, bus or trolleybus is generally quite convenient. The Moscow metro is one of the most reliable and safe (not to mention beautiful) underground transport systems in the world. The trains are new and run at short intervals. CCTVs are everywhere in the metro, and there are police at every station. Gabriel Infante Carrillo from Mexico City says that while riding the Moscow metro he had to put his backpack through an X-ray machine, but that the official was very polite with him. "I was not surprised at all, I knew beforehand that this could happen due to security reasons," he said.

Aboveground transport by and large uses specially allocated lanes, and while waiting you can pass the time at "smart" bus stops that have Wi-Fi, electric sockets and an electronic bus schedule in Latin script.

Can young women travel alone in Moscow?

dodge journey 2018 car won't start

It is generally rare for anyone in Moscow to pester women in the street or catcall them, especially if they see that she is a foreign tourist. Russian men are usually restrained and, even if they like a girl VERY MUCH, it is usually sufficient to politely decline their advances. So Moscow is a perfectly safe city solo women.
