Prepare for Halifax’s busiest cruise ship day of 2023 (so far)
Container ships, cruise ships, cargo carriers and more vessels bound for halifax the week of july 17-23, 2023..
By Martin Bauman
I t’s not an uncommon event when Halifax sees three cruise ship arrivals on the same date: From April to November this year, it will happen 24 times. What’s far less common? When each of those three ships holds more than 1,000 passengers. On Thursday, July 20, when the Liberty of the Seas , Zaandam and Zuiderdam cruise ships arrive with up to 7,025 passengers aboard, it will mark the busiest day of Halifax’s 2023 cruise schedule to date—and the fourth-busiest day in port for cruise traffic in all of 2023.
That traffic is both good and bad for Halifax, depending on who you ask: According to the Halifax Port Authority, which oversees the arrival of just under 200 cruise ships a year, those ships—and the roughly 325,000 annual visitors they bring—account for about $136 million flowing into Halifax and the surrounding area every year. But the ships themselves are big polluters—critics argue they’re more carbon-pollutive than any other form of travel . And some caution that Canada’s environmental laws are making things worse.
Economic driver or eco-threat? The conundrum of Halifax’s cruise ships : Proponents say the industry brings upwards of $130M to the HRM each year. Critics say it risks irreparably damaging our oceans and marine life.
If you haven’t read it before, The Coast delved into the cruise ship industry and why it matters to Halifax .
All caught up? Here’s a look at what else is coming in and out of port this week:
Monday, July 17
Kicking off the week’s arrivals in Halifax Harbour were two container ships that, on another night, sound like a band you’d see at Bearly’s or Durty Nelly’s: Vivienne Sheri D and the Atlantic Sea . True to form, the latter arrived just after 5:30am from Liverpool, UK—birthplace of The Beatles—and leaves next for New York City—home of Blondie, the Beastie Boys and The Ramones. The former—an Eimskip-chartered ship—came into Halifax around 9am from Reykjavik, Iceland. It’s already en route to Portland, Maine.
The Lake Wanaka vehicle carrier arrived at Eastern Passage’s Autoport around 1pm from Emden, Germany. (Side note: Have you visited Lake Wanaka in New Zealand? You should. It’s lovely .) The 183-metre ship has a carrying capacity of 4,902 cars. It arrives in Halifax after earlier stops in the Netherlands, Portugal and Greece. The ship left early Tuesday morning for Mexico.
Finally, the 364-metre-long ONE Owl container ship arrived just after 4pm from Norfolk, Virginia. It’s currently berthed at the South End Container Terminal. The ship is headed next for Jebel Ali, UAE.
Tuesday, July 18
You know the “free parking” square in Monopoly, where nothing really happens? Tuesday is kind of like one of those.
Wednesday, July 19
If the early bird gets the worm, then the ONE Grus container ship is set to arrive in good time on Wednesday: The ship—named for a genus of birds in the crane family —is scheduled for a 5am arrival at the South End Container Terminal, wrapping a 12-day voyage from Suez, Egypt. It will eventually leave for New York.
An hour later, the Oceanex Sanderling is booked for its weekly arrival from St. John’s, NL. It’s due at the South End Container Terminal and will return to the Rock afterward.
The 930-passenger Viking Neptune cruises in around 7am. The 229-metre-long Viking Cruises vessel is slated to arrive at the Halifax Seaport’s Berth 22 from Boston, MA. It leaves later Wednesday and sails onward to Gaspé, Saguenay, Quebec City and Montreal.
Two more container ships and a vehicle carrier and a ro-ro/cargo carrier round out the day’s arrivals. The MSC Nuria and NYK Rumina container ships are due for the South End Container Terminal and Fairview Cove Terminal around 11am and 2:30pm, respectively. The former is inbound from Montreal and leaves next for Barcelona. The latter arrives from Antwerp, Belgium, and crosses back over the Atlantic to Southampton, UK.
The Morning Concert vehicle carrier is expected at the Autoport around 11am. The ship—operated by EUKOR—is 10 days behind on its scheduled route from Southampton, UK.
Thursday, July 20
It’s a busy day in port on Thursday: Three cruise ships, three container ships, a ro-ro/cargo ship and a bulk carrier are all scheduled to arrive.
The Liberty of the Seas is the day’s biggest arrival—if not in outright size, then in passengers it will offload. With a onboard capacity of 3,635 guests, it’s the eighth-largest cruise vessel to call into Halifax’s port in 2023, after the Oasis of the Seas (5,600 passengers), MSC Meraviglia (4,485), Norwegian Escape (4,260), Carnival Venezia (3,975), Norwegian Joy (3,800), Carnival Magic (3,690) and Sky Princess (3,660).
The day’s earliest arrival belongs to the MSC Zlata R. container ship, due in port around 1am. It’s en route from Sines, Portugal, and will carry onward to Montreal. Its shipping peer, the MSC Shay —the largest ship of the day, at 340 metres long—arrives around 4pm from Baltimore, MD. It’s currently a week behind schedule. The ship will sail next for Saudi Arabia.
Finally, the NYK Demeter container ship, Nolhan Ava ro-ro/cargo ship and CSL Tacoma bulk carrier are expected to arrive from Saint John, NB, St. Pierre and Miquelon and Savannah, GA, respectively.
Friday, July 21
All is (mostly) quiet on the water on Friday. The 261-metre-long ZIM Iberia container ship is the day’s lone scheduled arrival. It’s set to berth at the South End Container Terminal around 7:15am. The ship is en route from Valencia, Spain and will sail onward to New York.
Saturday, July 22
The week’s end is harder to forecast. Both the Em Kea and CMA CGM Zephyr container ships are due to arrive at the South End Container Terminal, at least according to the Port of Halifax’s Vessel Forecast Summary , but neither ship appears on the Port of Halifax’s Port Control directory of arrivals.
The former is currently berthed in Montreal, while the latter is en route from Tanger Med, Morocco. The Em Kea is pencilled in to arrive at 7am, while the Zephyr—currently two days behind its schedule—is due for 9am.
Every term you’ve ever needed to know about ships in Halifax Harbour : A constantly growing glossary of high-seas lingo to guide you through The Coast’s weekly harbour traffic updates.
Sunday, july 23.
At first glance, naming a long-haul ship after Charles Darwin—a man whose scientific contributions not only changed how we view humanity, but also the oceans —seems a perfectly apt choice: His theory on how coral reefs are formed still (mostly) holds up nearly two centuries later. It is also a hilariously ironic choice, given Darwin once professed to hating “every wave of the ocean, with a fervour,” in a letter to his second cousin. Remember that as the MSC Darwin VI arrives at the South End Container Terminal on Sunday. The ship is due from Baltimore, before setting out for Saudi Arabia.

Port Bar Harbor cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Bar Harbor, Maine. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.
Bar Harbor is a port town on Mount Desert Island (Hancock County, Maine USA), with a population of around 5,000. It is a very popular tourist destination in Maine's Down East region.
Since January 2024, Bar Harbor Port (locode USBHB) has limited cruise shipping to 1000 daily disembarking tourists (passengers and crew), which is a substantial reduction from the previous 3000 daily visitors to the cruise port.
It is estimated that cruise tourists contribute USD 20+ million annually to Maine State's economy. Before the cruise shipping industry's pause (since mid-March 2020), the port expected nearly 200 ship calls and 300,000+ passengers. However, the entire 2020 season was eventually canceled. By mid-November 2020, Bar Harbor ME had booked 150+ cruise ship dockings (scheduled port calls) for season 2021.
Regularly scheduled ferries connect to Canada ( Yarmouth Nova Scotia ), with crossing time 3,5 hours.
In 2016, the port handled 105 cruise ship calls and around 169,000 passengers. During season 2016, cruise tourists spent at Bar Harbor around USD 15 million, with total economic impact USD 20,2M (based on a University of Maine study). To these figures must be added passenger fees (USD 0,7M) paid to the city. Also additional is spending by crew and cruise companies themselves. The study team handed out surveys to cruise passengers arriving at Harbor Place or Harborside Dock. Tourists returned 2231 surveys by mail (47% response rate). According to the study, 138,285 passengers disembarked in the cruise port in 2016. This was 87% of vessels' combined passenger capacity (163,000 pax). Note: passenger fees are based on the ship's capacity. The study also showed that in 2016, around 2 million tourists visited Bar Harbor and Acadia NP, of which cruisers were around 10%.
During season 2017, the cruise port handled a total of 171 ship calls (40% increase over 2016) and over 225,000 passengers.
On November 17, 2020, Bar Harbor Town Council discussed the popular policy (for smaller seaports in the USA) to limit the annual number of ships due to the ongoing concerns over the COVID crisis. In November 2022, via voting (1780 vs 1273) was placed a daily limit of 1000 cruise tourists, effective January 2024. A fine of US$100 per person is imposed on the company/operator for every disembarking passenger over the daily limit.
The small town is nationwide famous for its MDI Biological Laboratory (1898-founded independent nonprofit biomedical research facility), The Jackson Laboratory (JAX - large research facility specializing in mammalian genetics, nonprofit with over 2100 employees), College of the Atlantic (COA - private liberal-arts college).
However, Bar Harbor is best known for Acadia National Park/NP, which includes ~1/2 of Mount Desert Island (Cadillac Mountain) plus adjacent smaller isles. The town is served by Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport (in Trenton ME), located approx 15 km (9 mi) northwest of downtown Bar Harbor. The county-owned airport serves regularly scheduled domestic flights (carriers Elite Airways, Peninsula Airways, Cape Air, PenAir) connecting to Boston MA, Newark NJ, and Vero Beach FL.
In close proximity to downtown, Acadia NP offers numerous outdoor activities, such as hiking, trekking, biking, mountain climbing, bird watching. Tourists interested in the island's marine life can visit the yacht marina (at the end of Main Street) and sign up for boat tours for wildlife viewing (puffins, whales, seals, lobster, pelagic seabirds) or harbor cruises.
Bar Harbor cruise terminal
Bar Harbor ME is a tender cruise port, which means cruise liners anchor in Frenchman Bay and their passengers are transported to the pier via the ship's tender boats.
After the ship drops anchor, cruise passengers are ferried back and forth to one of the port's 2 piers/docks in downtown (at 121 Eden Street). From there, they can connect (with trolleys and buses) to local attractions, including Acadia National Park.
(NEW) Bar Harbor cruise terminal "Marine Atlantic"
As tendering passengers increase cruise companies' costs, there is a plan for the conversion of the old ferry terminal (on Eden Street) to a combined ferry -cruise terminal facility.
The town voted on June 13, 2017 (Article 12) to re-zone the old ferry terminal. Following the vote (945 to 658), the town purchased the state-owned Marine Atlantic property (former ferry terminal) from the Maine Department of Transportation. This facility served two Bay Ferries ships (The Cat, The Bluenose) connecting Bar Harbor with Nova Scotia Canada ( Yarmouth ).
- In February 2019 was signed a 5-year lease deal (thru 2024) with annual rent CAD 264,000.
- By the lease agreement, Bay Ferries started a major terminal renovation project that includes demolition and rebuilding of Customs Plaza, as well as a renovation of outbuildings and portions of the terminal building's interior.
- Customs Plaza's renovation also includes installing new equipment (required by US Customs and Border Protection), repairs to the existing docking pier, installing a new fixed bridge section (adjacent to the pier), transfer of the floating ferry ramp from Portland to Bar Harbor.
- Nova Scotia contributed to the cost of the ferry terminal's border services. Since the Maine-Nova Scotia ferry service was resumed (2015-2018), the NS government spent CAD 32 million in subsidies.
Article 12's zoning change allows cruise (and other) vessels to dock at the ferry terminal. Several lawsuits (filed by locals) were against this port development project. As of 2019, Ferry Terminal Visioning Committee has approved the state-owned property to be used as a multi-use terminal. The current deal includes a 5-year lease for the CAT ferry providing daily connections Bar Harbor-Yarmouth. Other terminal uses could include a possible yacht marina, boat storage, overflow parking (for tourists), cruise ship tendering.
The town has a webpage dedicated to materials developed by consultants and the local committee process. More information can be found at barharbormaine.gov/393/Ferry-Terminal. Anyone interested in this issue could follow port developments on the website.
In early-July 2020, due to the progressing in the USA COVID pandemic, Bar Harbor decided to close its seaports to cruise ships for the remainder of 2020. On July 7, town councilors voted to ban cruise ships after ACL-American Cruise Lines announced its plan to resume coastal voyages with some itineraries visiting several Maine coast towns.
In early-August 2021, the Town Council voted unanimously for the 65-year-old ferry terminal to be demolished, once there's money and a plan to replace it with a new facility. Most of the existing infrastructure (including the pier) will be demolished, to fulfill the contract with Bay Ferries. The decision was made following a workshop with the Harbor Committee in July, during which was also suggested building a new Marina (yacht-serving port facility).
- In late-July, the Canadian company announced plans to restart its fast-catamaran service (THE CAT ship) linking with Canada (Yarmouth) .
- The 1956-built old ferry terminal was originally designed to serve the Canadian ferryboat MV Bluenose (1977-built/1982-scrapped), so the current layout is obsolete.â¯
- The current terminal consists of 2 causeways, 2 piers/docks (north and south), 2 vehicle bridges (between both piers), and a dilapidated building.
