Escape to the African savannah, where zebras wander through knee-high grasses and giraffes search the treetops for tasty treats. Add ostriches, dromedaries, watusi and gemsbok, and you're at Africa Mia, home to Costa Rica's only African safari adventure.
Created in 2006, Africa Mia has grown to be one of the Liberia's most popular tourist attractions. The ten-million dollar project blends species native to Africa with Costa Rica's indigenous wildlife. The dry grasslands of Guanacaste need little enrichment to mimic the habitat of the African plains, creating an ideal environment for sub-Saharan species.
The reserve is divided into three sections: the outer savannah, inner savannah and El Salto Waterfall. The outer savannah is reserved as an adaptation area for new arrivals, while the inner savannah houses the reserve's long-term residents. El Salto is a beautiful waterfall fed by nearby Rincon de la Vieja National Park. Surrounded by tropical dry forest, plenty of native wildlife can be spotted around El Salto cascade.
After a trip to the outer savannah, which is fenced and not accessible to visitors, guests ride an open-air vehicle into the inner savannah. Begin at the petting zoo, where white-tailed deer, dromedaries and ostriches eagerly accept snacks. Next, venture into the open plains, where animals roam freely and experienced guides detail interesting facts about each species.
Africa Mia is home to over 150 animals and 11 species native to Africa: warthogs, reticulated giraffes, Chapman's zebra, plains zebra, dromedaries, ostriches, gemsbok, bongo, Nilgai antelope, watusi, and giant eland, the largest antelope in the world. Peacocks, white-tailed deer and white-faced monkeys also live on the reserve. Since the animals live together on the reserve's open savannah, few aggressive species currently reside at Africa Mia. Plans are underway to create a separate hippo area, and other territorial species may be considered in the future.
Facilities:
Africa Mia has a visitor's center and restaurant, as well as a cafe and picnic area for meals or snacks. A handful of shops and a souvenir store promise plenty of mementos to remind you of your African safari in Costa Rica.
The weather in Liberia is mostly hot and dry, and average temperatures range from 78 to 94°F. During the green season (May-November), it is best to bring a raincoat or umbrella. Wear comfortable walking shoes or boots if visiting El Salto Waterfall or hiking the reserve.
Getting There:
Take Route 1 east from Liberia toward Bagaces. From El Salto Bridge, follow signs to Africa Mia. The park is located just off the highway.

Safari Tours: The Heartbeat of Adventure

Discovering Wildlife at Africa Mia
For those who yearn for a safari experience but find themselves in Costa Rica, Africa Mia is an ideal destination to observe African wildlife without leaving the country. The plains zebra and wild boar are just a couple of the 150 animals from 11 different species that roam freely in the dry grasslands of Africa Mia. This unique reserve offers visitors a glimpse into African wildlife without stepping foot off Costa Rican soil.
A trip to this park will have you spotting giant eland among knee-high grasses one moment, then marveling at area wildlife like reticulated giraffes and Chapman’s zebras the next. The warthogs may not be Pumbaa singing Hakuna Matata, but they certainly bring their own charm to your visit.
This ten-million-dollar project has transformed Liberia’s natural landscape into East Africa’s dry savannah. Dromedaries meander around bongo antelope while ostriches strut alongside gemsbok – it’s like being transported onto another continent.
The reserve is also home to more than just animal encounters; it holds educational value too. By watching the creatures in their re-created habitats, we can gain insight into each species’ behaviors and how they connect with their surroundings.
So put on your best walking shoes because there is so much more than meets the eye when discovering wildlife at Africa Mia. Who knows? You might leave with new knowledge bombs about African fauna that could make even David Attenborough proud.
Comparing Africa Mia with Ponderosa Adventure Park
When planning your Costa Rican adventure, you may find yourself torn between two stunning safari parks: Africa Mia and Ponderosa. Each park offers unique experiences that cater to different tastes.
Africa Mia is a gem for wildlife enthusiasts. It’s home to over 150 animals from 11 species native to Africa, giving visitors the opportunity for up-close encounters with fascinating creatures such as plains zebras and wild boars. You can even witness giant elands roam freely across dry grasslands dotted with knee-high grasses.
At Ponderosa, you can get up close and personal with a range of exotic creatures such as giraffes, zebras, watusis, wildebeests, dromedaries and ostriches – totaling 300 animals from 22 species. This diverse range of wildlife adds an extra layer of excitement when exploring this amazing park.
The key difference lies in their approach towards providing authentic safari experiences. While both parks allow you to marvel at African fauna amidst lush Costa Rican landscapes, Africa Mia focuses more on free-roaming displays where animals inhabit large areas designed closely after their natural habitats.
In contrast, Ponderosa adopts a mixed display model which includes traditional enclosures along with open-range exhibits allowing closer interactions between visitors and certain animal species.
So whether it’s immersing oneself in nature or enjoying close-up encounters with exotic wildlife that thrills you most about safaris – there’s no wrong choice. Both parks offer unforgettable adventures filled with incredible sights and sounds guaranteed to ignite your love for the great outdoors.
Planning Your Visit to Africa Mia
If you’re ready for a taste of the wild in Costa Rica, then Africa Mia is calling your name. This African safari adventure park sits just off Route 1 east from Liberia toward Bagaces.
The best time to visit depends on how much heat you can handle. The climate in Liberia is usually quite sweltering, with the temperature typically between 78 and 94°F. If that sounds like a perfect day under the sun, then pack those walking shoes.
To make your trip easier, consider checking out some vacation rentals or vacation packages around Africa Mia Costa Rica. They often bundle accommodation with other travel info essentials – making it simpler for you.
You might also want to plan what kind of experience suits your adventurous spirit best at this diverse wildlife reserve. For thrill-seekers there are ATV tours while others may prefer basking by El Salto Waterfall.
Last but not least: remember our animal friends’ welfare when visiting. Feeding them human food or anything not provided by park staff isn’t allowed because their health comes first – plus we wouldn’t want any mishaps during feeding times.
Make Your Day Memorable at Africa Mia
Beyond observing magnificent creatures like zebras and elands up close (and even getting hands-on experiences.), expect fun family activities too. An afternoon picnic amidst knee-high grasses could be just as memorable as seeing an ostrich sprint across the dry grasslands.
In essence, planning your visit involves understanding both logistical details and anticipating exciting opportunities that await within this slice of East Africa in Central America’s heartland.
Exploring Family-Friendly Activities at Africa Mia
If you’re looking for a fun family day, then Africa Mia should be on your radar. Known for its niños friendly atmosphere and interactive animal encounters, this place is an afternoon picnic spot that doubles as a learning center.
The reserve has got it all – a visitor’s center where the little ones can ask questions about animals, their habits, or any random curiosity they might have. It’s more than just satisfying their query; it’s also about igniting that spark of interest in wildlife.
A cafe to satisfy those taste buds after an exciting safari tour and restaurant to indulge in some local delicacies. But the real treat here is having lunch amidst nature while being watched by curious zebras or giant elands.
You can’t forget the souvenir store. The children will love picking out mementos from this trip – whether it’s stuffed versions of their favorite African animals or educational books on wildlife conservation.
Surely everyone loves picnics? With ample space available throughout the park, families are encouraged to pack up an afternoon picnic and enjoy amongst knee-high grasses under Costa Rican skies surrounded by sounds of exotic birds chirping away. Africa Mia Zoo
On our way back from Nicaragua, we saw a sign for a zoo called Africa Mia (My Africa) near the town of Liberia, Costa Rica. We didn’t know anything about it, but had some extra time, so we thought we would check it out.
Africa Mia has over a dozen different kinds of African animals, including zebras, giraffes, bongo, ostrich, and more, many of which you can feed. They have three options available for entrance. A walking self-directed tour for about $15 adults / $12 kids, an air conditioned bus ride for $30/24, and an open jeep safari for $65/55. No, not cheap. But pretty cool.
We chose option number 2 because it was a really hot day and we wanted air conditioning. It also would have been a very long walk otherwise – the kids would have cried for sure. Maybe I would have, too. The tour was great, though. Our guide was really nice and knew a lot about the animals, even though he’d only been working there for two weeks. His English was also very good.
We got to hand feed carrots to the giraffes, ostriches, dromedary, and deer. We also got to throw carrots to the wart hogs. We saw some adorable baby deer (4 days old), a beautiful peacock, wildebeest, and long-horn bulls, and more. Check out the pictures. I’ll be posting a video in my next post about this and another excursion.

It was fun to see all those cool animals so close. I especially loved seeing how the giraffe took the carrots out of our hands by curling his long tongue around them before depositing them in his mouth. Those baby deer were oh so precious, and I thought the dromedary was fun to feed too. Their split upper lip is interesting to see up close while they are eating.
That looks like a very interesting tour. The wart hog is a bit intimidating.
How cool!! That would be so much fun to see all of those animals- and to feed them. What adorable baby deer (fawn, right?)…
looks like a fun tour..I would have taken the bus too :o)

An African Tour in a Guanacastecan Adventure
By By David Bolaños
Just 11 kilometers from the center of Liberia, África Safari Adventure Park offers a retreat among the natural and the wild. Visitors can see from up close giraffes, zebras, ostriches, gnus, oryx, dromedaries, deer and Ankole-Watusi cattle, which live in the first 100 hectares of the park.
After the African safari, extend the day on 400 hectares more of trails, waterfalls, kayaks, canopy tours, climbs and ATV treks.
Yesterday, África Mía
In the past two years, the only African safari on Tico land has changed: The name has changed, as well as the owner, the size of the park, the number of attractions and the price.
The park originally was called África Mía when it was owned by businessman Mario Sotela. In 2014, the property passed to David Patey, from the U.S., who also owns Club Sport Herediano. “With the change of ownership, we tried to respect the theme of Africa, as it already was positioned in the national market, and it was named África Safari Adventure Park,” said Rodrigo Soto, the tourist center’s marketing manager.
Entry to the safari area costs about ₡18,000 ($33) for adults and ₡15,000 ($27.50) for minors. “We’ve talked about the fact that the previous owner charged on average about ₡45,000 ($82.50) for about a third of the tour you can now take in the park. The price has dropped substantially,” Soto said.
Today, África Safari Adventure Park
Visitors can document their safari trips with all cameras on hand. Animals approach the vehicles hoping for carrot snacks happily provided by tourists. The visits are guided, with general information about species that inhabit the property.
Most tourists who visit the park are from Costa Rica. “Particularly in San José and the Grand Metropolitan Area, people want to see the animals. We have about 60 zebras and nine giraffes. … Since there is the possibility for contact (with the animals), people want to live that experience,” said Soto, who acknowledged that the park hopes to attract more foreign tourists.
Visitors enjoy the safari in open vehicles accompanied by professional photographers who document each visit. At the end of the tour, the photographs can be purchased.
Here there are no walls to obstruct visits. Guests enter directly onto the animals’ territory in open trucks, which remain parked for several minutes in each area to appreciate the details of each species. The only areas restricted to the public are the ostrich nests and areas dedicated to pregnant female species.
After the safari animal tour, tourists can enjoy canopy tours, kayaking, visits to waterfalls, rides on ATVs, trails, mountain climbing and rappelling for the rest of the day. The cost of each visit depends on activities selected. For example, the Guanapack tour package includes two activities and lunch for ₡38,600 ($71) for adults.
Tomorrow, Ponderosa Adventure Park
Since the change in administration, the park is migrating toward the concept of broader entertainment, which will be called Ponderosa Adventure Park.
“Here next to (the safari) we acquired a large property called La Ponderosa estate. The safari will be one of the many attractions in all of the project,” Soto said, while standing next to the pool areas that soon will be available for visitors.
The property also will be populated with more animals. One of the park’s new attractions will be “King Croc,” a lagoon with 50 crocodiles that can be viewed during an educational tour. “In the future, it’s likely that we’ll focus more on national animals. Curiously, the national visitor is very interested in native animals,” Soto said.
The Sotela house in La Ponderosa formerly was the site of a country club with tennis courts and swimming pools. Another part of the tourist project will be Ponderosa City, which will have a living area, an educational center and representation of the ancient Guanacastecan people. Construction of this area is expected to be finished in three years, but the country club is currently operating.
Reservations for tours at the África Safari Adventure Park should be made in advance by calling the tourist center at: 2288-1000. Information on tour packages can be found at the center’s website: http://www.africasafaricostarica.com .

Cape Town to the Serengeti: Deserts & Wilderness
Enjoyed the trip, saw lots of different animals, history and culture. Spent a lot of the time driving but the variety of game drives and optional activities created a good balance. The 2 groups I was a part of were great people and good company. The meals however were poor, felt our guide didn't try his best, majority of meals were cheap and our meal allowances were equivalent to $2-3 when given to eat on our long drives. He definitely could of done better with options especially after several comments and suggestions from our group. I didn't feel the food we got was anywhere the price I paid for the trip. Breakfasts consisted of cornflakes, weetabix, fruit and occasional yoghurt which was hidden and rationed along with museli. There were some days closer to the end where we got eggs, sausage and pancakes. Some individuals didn't even eat much overall because there wasn't much selection. Lunches consisted of processed meat sandwiches, apples and bananas for the most part. Dinners were rice, pasta, some vegetables and bread. The meat options were fine and more catered to I found. Unfortunately I felt that our guide wasn't organized with activities either, left everything to the last minute. He became more involved and active on the 2nd half of our journey with the group, for the first half he was a little reserved. Our driver was amazing and very accommodating and friendly. I would definetely do another G trip but would like to have a more outgoing and accommodating guide.

8 days: Best of Zambia, Botswana (Chobe) and Zimbabwe (Hwange) Wildlife Safari Tour
We enjoyed the experience. The only negative place was the lodge in Hwange, totally substandard, we were supposed to be there 2 nights but moved out after the first night. Must mention Mark, Fines, Peace and the other 2 guides that went over and above their duties to satisfy our needs.

14-day Kruger to the Delta, Chobe & Victoria Falls (Accommodated)

Well beyond expectations! Itinerary allowed us to cover so much - every day was a new adventure. The guide, Manache, and driver, Steve, were excellent and they always went far beyond the call of duty.
12-day Delta, Chobe & Victoria Falls (Accommodated)
With much sadness we have just finished our 12 day Delta Chobe Waterways tour in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana. The trip was our belated honeymoon and we couldn't have picked a better option. The places we visited and people we met were fascinating, beautiful, friendly and unforgetable. The constant throughout our trip however was our wonderful guide Simon Tawanira. From the very start he was welcoming, helpful and made the trip entirely worry-free. He generously shared so much information about the countries we visited and animals we were fortunate enough to see. We shared many stories and laughs. We will very much miss our fabulous guide and are a little concerned about how we will organise ourselves without him! This was always going to be an amazing trip but Simon made it truly memorable. Any one lucky enough to book a trip with him with have a fantastic time and learn so much. Thank you.

Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire (with Materuni waterfalls, coffee tour) - 6 Days
Highly professional all around We travelled as a couple with Serengeti African Tours and received excellent service from start to end. We did a 7 day safari plus Zanzibar as an add on. With an extremely professional and skilled guide, a highly organised booking team and an amazing selection of lodges/tented camps to stay in we had an all around amazing trip. The quality of the food, the staff and the accommodation was 5 star all around. Would highly recommend anyone to do a private safari with this company, you will be looked after from start to end. The small extras including asking what kind of drinks we would like in the vehicle and the gift of a wine for a special celebration was also a really lovely touch. Great value for money with the amount of food, the private tour and types of accommodation. Luxury and mid range available
10 Days Uganda's Gorillas Encounter, Wildlife & Kigali City Tour ( Private tour)
Mukisa Safari Tour scheduled an amazing trip and Richard our contact was very quick with responses and helpful but our guide Veronica and our driver Sam were what made the trip all what we could hope it could be. Sam got us from place to place safely, had a good sense of humor, and gave us some tidbits along the way. He also introduced me to the chili oil there which was perfect to add to our food. Veronica was so knowledgable, caring, and you can tell loves her country and job. We met another couple at one of the lodges that said all companies are the same but we have to disagree. This company, the people , and the activities made it a trip of a lifetime. Starting off seeing rhinos the first day was just the beginning. Make sure you get to the top of Murchison Falls because that is breathtaking. The weather was hot but up there with the mist helped cool things off. By the end of day two the only thing we didn't see in the big five was the lion which was fine as you do the lion trekking in Queen Elizabeth's National Park. I would recommend everyone spend the extra money for the lion trekking as we went off the road and got to see things no one else got to see such as lion cubs and a leopard that used the car to get some shade. You go on two river boats but honestly the second one was so much better seeing animals. So many babies, and variety. The chimpanzee and gorilla trekking is why we went but the whole trip was truly noteworthy. The drives are long and bumpy but enjoy the people and the time to reflect. When we had a health issue everyone was helpful and responsive. Veronica was very communicative every step of the way and if things got changed or needed taken care of she was there explaining what and why. Out of all the companies out there I think you will be very happy with Mukisa.

East Africa is a bucket-list trip and did not disappoint. We saw the big 5 and so much more. Our guide, Zach, our chef and driver were professionals and dealt with any and all issues without having them affect the trip.

Guess what? The African wildlife feels totally at home in Guanacaste's pastureland, just like they're hanging out in the plains of East Africa. Say hello to Ponderosa in Liberia, Costa Rica! This place is a haven for around 300 animals, and get this, they represent 22 different species. Out of those, 11 are straight out of Africa – we're talking giraffes, zebras, watusis, wildebeests, dromedaries, ostriches, and more. You can even befriend them with carrot sticks – yep, you read that right.
These cool creatures have a whole 30-hectare area to roam around, all comfortably under a watchful eye. So if you're feeling adventurous, you can jump into the wild and get super close to these awesome animals. But wait, there's more! Hop on our safari tour trucks for an epic ride, where our guides will drop some knowledge bombs about each of these critters.
Oh, and after all that excitement, if your tummy starts growling, we've got you covered. Grab a traditional Costa Rican lunch right in the park – your taste buds will thank you. But hold up, the adventure doesn't stop there. Take a little trip to El Salto River, which runs through the park, and you'll stumble upon the stunning La Perla waterfall and a chill swimming area. So, pack those bathing suits and make it a fun family day out – no rush, just good times!

We highly recommend our convenient self-transport option, where our knowledgeable guides will eagerly await your arrival. Need a rental vehicle? We're here to accommodate you by delivering one right to your location and picking it up when you're finished. However we do offer transportation from anywhere in Guanacaste. Rest assured, you'll enjoy the lowest guaranteed prices and the freedom to explore at your own pace. To check availability and secure your reservation, simply click on "Book Now" and enter your preferred date and time. No upfront full payment is required; a modest deposit is all it takes to confirm your reservation. You can make the full payment on the day of the tour once you've selected your preferred activities. What travelers are saying about our Africa tours
Travel tips for africa trips.
The best time for a trip to Africa depends on what you want to see during your vacation. The temperature is warm year-round, but the seasons affect both weather patterns and animal migrations across the continent. Because Africa is in the Southern Hemisphere, seasons are opposite those of North America—that means that during the summer months in North America, it’s winter in Africa.
Our Africa tour packages are designed to take you to the best sites at the ideal time of year. In general, you will want to visit Africa during the dry season, which differs from region to region. July through October is the best time for a safari in Tanzania or Kenya, with cooler temps and animal migrations happening across the Serengeti and Masai Mara. African tours that take you to Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Cape Town are best from April to October, when the weather is cooler and more comfortable for safari game drives or city sightseeing. In the deserts of Morocco and Egypt, the climate is very hot and dry; plan to visit Northern Africa in spring or fall when the weather is most pleasant.
A trip to Africa can mean anything from a wildlife safari to sipping a crisp white wine at a vineyard. When you travel with us, you’ll experience all the best places to visit in Africa alongside an expert Tour Director and local guides—which means you can get the most out of your trip, no matter where you go.
On Safari Tours you’ll experience game drives in wildlife-rich destinations like the Serengeti and Hwange National Park. Snap photos of the Big Five from your safari vehicle, and experience untouched Africa in handpicked hotels that put you at the heart of the action.
If you’re looking for a mix of city and wildlife, one of our Africa guided tours to Cape Town is the perfect fit. Want to visit excellent vineyards and Africa’s best coastal cities? The beaches and vineyards around Cape Town, Knysna, and Port Elizabeth definitely fit the bill.
For Africa tours and travel filled with culture and history, you’ll want to see the Highlights of Morocco or Ancient Egypt . You can explore the Sahara on camelback and browse colorful souks or stand beside the Great Pyramids of Giza and see the Great Sphinx. We make it easy to get closer to local culture and see the important landmarks because our carefully planned itineraries are crafted with these moments in mind.
There is no one dish that defines African cuisine. In Morocco, influences from Mediterranean, Arab, and Andalusian cultures can be found in the range of spices that flavor every meal. Traditional dishes include tagine —a stew made with beef, chicken, or lamb and vegetables—and couscous. Egyptian cuisine is also heavily influenced by Mediterranean flavors, and the Nile Valley produces an abundance of legumes and vegetables. Try shawarma and kebab , two meat dishes that are popular throughout Northern Africa and the Middle East.
In Kenya and Tanzania, cuisine is very tied to what is locally available—depending on where you are, you’ll find very different dishes! On our African tours, meals in your game lodges reflect Britain’s colonial influence. Curries and spicy foods are also popular, thanks to Indian and South Asian immigrants who call the region home.
South African food is called “rainbow cuisine” because of its multicultural influences. South Africa is also a very popular wine region, and produces some of the world’s best white wines.
Our escorted tours to Africa visit many different regions, which means a diverse range of cuisines to try!
On any tours around Africa, expect hot, sunny weather during the day and the chance for cooler temps at night. You’ll want loose-fitting, layered clothing for a range of temperatures, as well as sun protection, including a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses. If you are traveling in Morocco and Egypt, remember to pack modest clothing that can keep you covered during visits to mosques or other religious sites. You may also want to pack lightweight rainwear, as occasional rain showers are common during certain seasons.
If you are packing for a safari, it’s recommended you wear muted colors to avoid scaring away animals. Safari luggage restrictions are strongly enforced to ensure everyone’s safety and comfort aboard safari vehicles. You will need to bring a soft, flexible duffel bag as hard suitcases are not allowed.
Of course, once you’ve reserved your trip to Africa, we’ll send you detailed information about getting ready for your travels—including more packing tips!

Africa Mia was created in 2006 as a place that allowed native African species to live in a Costa Rican habitat.
