What a visa-free travel to Kenya means and how it will work

Fridah Naliaka

As Kenya marked 60 years of independence from Britain, President William Ruto made a historic declaration when he announced that global visitors will from January 2024 enter Kenya visa-free.

“It shall no longer be necessary for any person from any corner of the globe to carry the burden of applying for a visa to come to Kenya," President Ruto said in an address at Uhuru Gardens.

The Head of State further explained that all travelers will henceforth obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter Kenya.

“To implement this new policy, we have developed a digital platform to ensure that all travellers to Kenya are identified in advance on an electronic platform,” he stated.

Before the presidential declaration, Kenya had waived visa requirements for a number of countries.

According to Immigration information on eCitizen, nationals of 42 countries ranked as Category 1 had been exempted from obtaining a Visa.

Nationals from 144 other countries ranked as category 2, may be issued with e-Visas upon application on eCitizen platform.

While 25 groups have been exempted from the visa requirement, nationals from 16 other countries are not allowed to make e-Visa applications on eCitizen.

What then does it mean to make Kenya a visa-free state to the world? A visa-free travel to a country is the ability to visit a country without having to obtain a visa with your passport.

Visa-free policies are commonly applied only for tourist or business purposes and allow short stays between 30-90 days in a country. Importantly, visitors still need a valid travel document such as a passport to enter a visa-free state.

Nations establish visa-free entries to establish good diplomatic relationships or to achieve economic development.

As a proponent of free trade in Africa, President Ruto has on numerous occasions called on African nations to abolish visa requirements for its population.

This, Ruto says, will support the establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) which seeks to create a borderless market for African entrepreneurs and businesses.

Under the visa-free policy, Kenya will begin using the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to identify visitors entering its soil.

With an aim to digitize its borders by 2025, the UK government in 2023 launched an ETA to allow travellers from eligible nations to visit Britain without acquiring a visa. The visa-free provision will apply to citizens of selected nations, who visit UK for tourism, study, business or to visit friends and family.

The Canadian government also has an ETA policy for visa-exempt countries.

To get an ETA, a traveler intending to visit Kenya will required to apply through a digital platform, just as announced by President Ruto.

Normally, one is required to have a valid passport for verification, and will also be needed to pay a fee. In some cases, additional identification documents may be required before the authorization is validated.

The ETA is then electronically linked to one’s passport or travel document.

While the visa requirement for visitors will be scrapped, this does not mean that there will be no charges to apply for entry into Kenya using the ETA.

In a gazette notice in November 2023, the government through the Ministry of Interior had announced that ETA charges will be $30 (approximately Ksh.4,500) from January 2024.

The gazette notice had also highlighted changes in visa fees, where a Single Entry Visa would cost $ 100, $500 for a Multiple Entry Visa, $160 for a 5-year Multiple Entry Visa and $200 for an extension of visa after six months.

Additionally, Sanctions for Overstaying will cost $100, Referral/Multiple Entry Visa processing fees will cost $100, a Transit Visa for $50 and an East African Tourism Visa for $100. The changes were meant to be effective on January 1, 2024.

Globally, nations have made various visa pacts to ease movement and trade within one another. Other also have visa-free policies, and ETA systems in place.

Such visa agreements include the Schengen Agreement; which covers 27 European countries, the US Visa Waiver Program which allows citizens from 40 countries to enter America without a visa.

Citizens from 15 member states in the ECOWAS can enter without a visa and stay for 90 days and the East African Community agreement enables visa-free travel for Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda citizens.

There is also a Commonwealth Agreement that allow citizens of certain commonwealth countries to enter visa-free in member states, and a bilateral agreement that allows US and Canada citizens to travel across the two countries without a visa by using either; their passport, a border crossing card, or an enhanced driver’s license.

Checking Eligibility

To determine whether your nationality qualifies for visa-free entry into Kenya , visit the official e-visa website. Select your country of origin from the drop-down menu. If you are eligible for visa exemption, the website will promptly confirm your status. In cases where visa exemption does not apply, you will be directed to apply for a Kenya e-visa or provided with information on the nearest Kenyan embassy.

Passport Requirements for Kenya

All visitors to Kenya must possess a passport with at least 6 months of remaining validity from the date of arrival. Additionally :-

  • Passport must have at least 6 months of remaining validity from the date of arrival.
  • Passport must have a minimum of two blank pages for visa stamps and endorsements.
  • If the passport expires within 6 months of the planned arrival date in Kenya, it must be renewed before travel.
  • The passport should be in good condition without significant damage or wear that might hinder identification.
  • It's advisable to carry a photocopy of the passport's main page and any previously issued Kenyan visas, if applicable, as a backup identification document.
  • In case of name changes ( e.g., due to marriage or legal name change ), supporting documentation such as a marriage certificate or court order should be carried to explain any discrepancies.
  • Dual citizens should ensure that the passport they use to enter Kenya matches the one they used to obtain their e-visa, if applicable, to avoid complications.
  • Keep the passport secure during your stay in Kenya, as losing it can lead to significant travel and legal difficulties.

Documents Required for Online Application

For those opting to apply for a Kenya e-visa online, a range of documents will be necessary, including:

  • All Passport Pages Scan (if applicable) : This document typically refers to a scanned copy of all the pages of your passport. It ensures that immigration authorities have access to all your passport information, including personal details, previous travel history, and any visa stamps or endorsements.
  • Applicant's Photo: A recent passport-sized photograph of the visa applicant is required. This photo is used for identification purposes and is affixed to your e-visa.
  • Passport Cover : A scan of your passport's cover, which typically contains the passport's identifying information, including your name and passport number.
  • Passport Scan : This is a scanned copy of the main page of your passport, which contains crucial information such as your photograph, name, nationality, passport number, and expiry date. It serves as a primary identification document.
  • Proof of Accommodation : This document provides evidence of your intended place of stay in Kenya. It can be a hotel reservation, a letter of invitation from a host in Kenya, or any document that confirms your accommodation arrangements.
  • Invitation Letter (if applicable) : If you are visiting Kenya as a guest of a host or an organization, an invitation letter from your host may be required. This letter typically includes details about your host and the purpose and duration of your visit.
  • Host's ID (if applicable): If you have a host in Kenya, providing a copy of their identification (e.g., national ID or passport) may be necessary to verify your connection with them.
  • Hospital Letter (if applicable) : If your trip to Kenya is for medical purposes, a letter from the Kenyan hospital outlining the details of your medical treatment or appointment may be required.
  • Appointment letter from Kenyan hospital (if applicable) : This document serves as confirmation of your medical appointment or treatment schedule at a Kenyan hospital.
  • Organization's Certificate of Registration in the justice authority (if applicable) : If you are visiting Kenya for business or as part of an organization, this document may be needed to confirm the legitimacy and registration of the organization.
  • Employment Proof (if applicable) : If your visit to Kenya is related to work or employment, you may need to provide proof of employment, such as an employment letter from your employer.
  • Document Upload Missing (if applicable): This could refer to any additional documents or information requested by the e-visa application system. It's crucial to check for any specific requirements or requests during the application process and provide them as necessary.

Each of these documents plays a unique role in verifying your eligibility and purpose for visiting Kenya. It's important to ensure that all documents are accurate, up-to-date, and meet the specific requirements outlined by the Kenyan e-visa application system. Failure to provide the necessary documents may result in delays or denials in the visa application process.

Kenya is now Visa Free, How to Get Your Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA)

Photo of Techish

Kenya, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage, has recently made a significant change to its travel policies. In 2023, under President Ruto’s government, it was declared that Kenya would become visa-free for all countries starting January 2024. However, there’s an essential caveat to this policy: the introduction of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA).

Understanding the Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA)

Who needs an eta.

  • Applicability : All nationalities, except Kenyan citizens and members of the East African Community (EAC), are required to obtain an eTA.
  • Exception : EAC nationals can continue to travel using their National ID, Interstate Pass, or Passport .

Application Process

  • Official Website : Applications must be submitted through the official website: www.etakenya.go.ke .
  • Third-Party Applications : Any applications made via third-party websites will be automatically denied.
  • Underage Travelers : For travelers under 18, the application must be completed by a parent or legal guardian.

Steps to Apply

  • Visit www.etakenya.go.ke .
  • Select “Apply Now” and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Choose between individual or group application.
  • Ensure all data entered is accurate.
  • Submit the application.
  • Await confirmation emails regarding application receipt, payment receipt, and the decision (approval/refusal).
  • If approved, save the eTA (sent as a PDF) on your device, print it, or store it in the “ Kenya Travel Authorisation ” mobile app.

In Case of Denial

  • Immediate Action : Travel to Kenya is not permitted at the moment.
  • Contact Support : Reach out to [email protected] for assistance.
  • Application Status : Check your application status at any time at www.etakenya.go.ke .

Required Documentation for eTA Application

  • Passport : Valid for at least six months post-arrival with one blank page.
  • Photo : A selfie or passport-type photo.
  • Contact Information : Email and phone number.
  • Travel Itinerary : Details of arrival and departure.
  • Accommodation : Booking confirmations.
  • Payment Method : Credit/debit card, Apple Pay, etc.

Additional Requirements for Certain Countries

  • Financial Proof : Bank letters or financial asset statements.
  • Return Transport : Confirmed booking details.
  • Health Certificates : Yellow fever certificate and other vaccination/test results if necessary.

Special Requirements Based on Visit Purpose

  • Medical : Doctor/hospital referral letter.
  • Conferences : Invitation/participation letter.
  • Employment : Employment contract.
  • Resettlement : Supporting documents.
  • Business : Company invitation letter and registration copy.
  • Family Visit : Invitation letter and host’s identification.
  • Diplomatic Travel : Diplomatic passport and official letter.

Processing Time and Validity for a Kenyan Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA)

  • Standard Processing : Approximately three (3) working days.
  • Premium Service : There’s a PREMIUM Option for faster processing or assistance.
  • eTA Validity : Valid for one journey (single entry) and expires upon exiting Kenya.

Important Considerations

  • Travel Permission : An eTA does not guarantee entry; it’s a prerequisite for travel.
  • Boarding and Entry : Carriers may deny boarding without necessary documents. Entry can also be denied after questioning at departure or arrival points.
  • Booking Requirement : eTA application requires confirmed transport and accommodation details.
  • Payment Issues : In case of payment refusal, reattempt after checking funds or wait a few minutes.

In summary, Kenya’s move to a visa-free policy with the introduction of the eTA streamlines the process for international travelers, making the country more accessible while maintaining essential security and documentation standards. It’s a step forward in promoting tourism and global connectivity, emphasizing the importance of efficient and secure travel procedures.

Visa-free travel leads to surge in Kenyan visitors

The success story provides a blueprint for future initiatives to bolster tourism within the continent, says sa tourism.

visa free travel kenyan passport

In an era where intercontinental collaboration has become crucial, the recent surge in tourism from Kenya to SA shows the transformative power of strategic policy-making and targeted marketing efforts.

From January 1 2023, Kenyans have enjoyed visa-free travel to SA for 90 days in a year. The scrapping of visa requirements for travellers between the two countries symbolises more than an administrative adjustment.

It marked a milestone in fostering closer ties for African countries, serving as a precursor for a new era of ease in travel and cultural exchange.

The impact of this change, coupled with SA Tourism's marketing strategies, has been profound, with SA experiencing a surge in visitors from Kenya.

Between January and December 2023, Kenya recorded a 99% increase compared with 2022, reaching 42,403 arrivals.

A comparison of seasonal trends shows that in 2023, arrivals exceeded 2019 arrivals. In 2022, arrivals peaked over 2019 in October.

This is an incredible number of Kenyan tourists who chose to explore SA above any other destination. Overall, SA welcomed 6.4-million visitors from the rest of Africa between January and December 2023, marking a 75.6% of all arrivals.

In 2023, Kenyan tourists spent over 20% more than what they spent in 2019. The influx has had economic and cultural impact.  Tourism is a significant economic driver, not just in revenue generation, but also as a catalyst for job creation, cultural exchange and strengthening international relations.

SA Tourism welcomes this with immense pride, and this is reflected in the marketing approach in Kenya,, which is multifaceted, dynamic and highly targeted.

Kenyans have an appetite for new experiences. The current campaign — “There's So Much More to See” — has successfully tapped into this sentiment, highlighting the lesser-known yet equally captivating variety of products and experiences led by SA Tourism's warm, culturally diverse team.

Digital campaigns have further leveraged Kenya's robust social media landscape, achieving impressive engagement metrics including more than 100-million impressions, over 9-million video views and 615,675 clicks.

These figures are a testament to the power of digital storytelling and the importance of authentic brand stories.

Without a doubt, this campaign has demonstrated an incredible capability to forge connections across borders.

The success of the visa-free regime in Kenya is a stepping stone to aim higher and broaden horizons

In fact, SA Tourism has received wide acclaim for the 2022/2023 digital media campaign.

The campaign featured rapper Sho Madjozi as the cultural curator for SA Tourism and focused on exploring Limpopo and celebrating Xitsonga culture through the Xibelani dance.

Last year, the campaign's success was affirmed by a slew of awards at the prestigious international Marketing and Communication Awards, solidifying SA Tourism's digital prowess in the travel and tourism sector.

As the team looks to the future, we will focus on sustaining and building on this momentum. The continuous evolution of marketing strategies and solid diplomatic relations remain vital to achieving this.

SA Tourism is gearing up for more powerful marketing campaigns and collaborations, including participating in the Magical Kenya Travel Expo and the East Africa Regional Tourism Expo. Such platforms showcase the country's diverse tourism offerings and engage with potential travellers and partners across the East Africa region.

SA Tourism hopes the success of the visa-free regime in Kenya will be replicated with other African nations, fostering an even wider continental atmosphere of openness and connectivity.

The lessons learnt and the successes achieved in this endeavour are invaluable, providing a blueprint for future initiatives to bolster tourism within Africa.

This success cannot be discussed without acknowledging the role of mutually beneficial bilateral co-operation. The collaboration between the governments of SA and Kenya has been the cornerstone of this achievement.

Strategic partnerships in the aviation and hospitality sectors have facilitated this growth. The code-share agreement between Kenya Airways and SAA, which established direct flights between Nairobi and major SA cities, has been pivotal in enhancing accessibility and convenience for travellers.

In this destination marketing journey, challenges and opportunities are intertwined. SA Tourism remains committed to promoting SA and collaborating with the tourism industry.

SA Tourism understands that the true value of tourism lies not only in its economic benefits, but also in its ability to transform communities, improve lives, and foster a sense of shared African identity.

The visa-free travel regime with Kenya is a shining example of what can be achieved when nations work together towards a common goal.

It is a story of the endless possibilities that arise when barriers are broken down and bridges are built.

5 visa updates for 2024 that Indian travellers will benefit from

Panchali Dey , TIMESOFINDIA.COM , TRAVEL NEWS , WORLD Created : Apr 4, 2024, 00:00 IST

visa free travel kenyan passport

With the summer holiday season fast approaching, it's time to start mapping out your travel plans. And as you do, it's also essential to stay updated on the latest visa regulations to ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey. Also, staying updated will help you choose your options more wisely, and make the most out of it. In short, knowing the visa requirements and updates can make all the difference.

Here are some noteworthy visa updates for 2024 that every Indian traveller should be aware of.

Japan's introduction of eVisas for Indian travellers

Japan has launched eVisa applications for Indian travellers. Administered by Japan Visa Application Centers operated by VFS Global, this streamlined process retains the familiar steps of submitting documents and applications to VFS. Designed for short-term tourism, the eVisa will be offering a single-entry option allowing stays of up to 90 days. Both Indian nationals and foreigners residing in India are eligible to submit their applications.

Notably, visas will now be issued electronically rather than as physical stickers in passports. Upon approval, travellers must present a visa issuance notice on their mobile device at the airport, necessitating internet access. Do note that alternative formats such as PDFs or printed copies of the eVisa will not be accepted.

Dubai's introduces five-year, multiple-entry tourist visa

Dubai recently introduced a new visa program tailored specifically for Indian travellers, reflecting the significant rise in visits from India. This visa option offers a five-year, multiple-entry permit, and will enable travellers to stay up to 90 days per visit, extendable once, not exceeding 180 days annually.

This visa will cater to both business and leisure trips, and will allow unlimited entries and exits within the five-year period. Requirements will include a passport photo, six months' worth of bank statements showing a balance of at least $4,000 (INR 3,33,447), a valid passport with a minimum validity of six months, health insurance, and round-trip flight tickets. The application process will typically take 2-5 days, with submissions accepted through the GDRFA website or app, or the official ICP website.

Thailand's visa-free option for Indian travellers

The Thai Government recently announced a temporary visa exemption for Indian passport holders from November 10, 2023, to May 10, 2024. During this period, Indian travellers can enter Thailand for tourism purposes without requiring a tourist visa, enjoying a 30-day stay.

Kenya's eliminates visa requirements

Effective January 1, Kenya eliminated visa requirements for not only Indian citizens, but also for all global visitors, in a move aimed at bolstering the nation's vital tourism sector. This visa-free initiative will facilitate seamless travel experiences for visitors keen on wildlife safaris and beach vacations.

Romania and Bulgaria's access to Schengen Visas

Romania and Bulgaria have partially joined the Schengen Area, expanding the scope of the Schengen visa to include 29 countries across continental Europe. This means Indian travellers can now obtain Schengen visas from Romania and Bulgaria, permitting stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. However, do note that visas issued before April 1 by these two countries won't grant access to the entire Schengen area. Travellers from non-Schengen countries may still undergo passport checks when travelling between different Schengen destinations. Visa issuance for Bulgaria and Romania can be processed on their respective official websites.

How many months do I need left on my UK passport before I travel?

Many countries across the world require you to have a few months left on your passport at the time of travel – here are the main holiday destinations to watch out for, article bookmarked.

You might think that you can just hop on a plane with an in-date passport and travel the world. In fact, many countries demand that visitors have months left on their passport before it expires.

Some – including Australia , Canada and the US – only require your travel document to be in date for the duration of your trip.

But others give a more restrictive time frame, with no real pattern from region to region – while most of Asia requires six months on your passport, for example, different Caribbean islands demand different time frames.

In some destinations, you can also be caught out for not having enough space left in your passport for new immigration stamps.

Here are the key passport validity rules for British passports for the world’s top holiday destinations.

  • Barred from Europe: 2.4m Brits caught in post-Brexit passport chaos
  • When do I need to renew my passport for travel to Europe?
  • This is the best time to renew your passport to save money

Valid for the duration of your stay

These countries only ask that your passport is valid until the day you leave the country.

*While this is technically the rule for Canada, if you have six months or less on your passport, it may take longer for you to get through immigration.

Valid for one day

Costa Rica requires Britons to have one day’s validity from the day of their departure.

Valid for three months

All EU countries, plus those in the Schengen Area (excluding Ireland) require you to have three months left on your passport from the day you plan to leave. Your passport must also be less than 10 years old on the day you enter the country. This is true for the following countries:

  • Republic of Cyprus
  • Czech Republic
  • Liechtenstein
  • Netherlands
  • Switzerland
  • Vatican City

These non-European countries also require three months’ validity on your day of departure:

  • British Virgin Islands
  • French Polynesia
  • New Zealand
  • South Korea

Valid for six months

In most cases, this means valid for six months from the date you arrive in the country, but it’s worth checking the Foreign Office’s individual entry requirements for the country you’re visiting to make sure.

  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • The Bahamas
  • Dominican Republic
  • Ecuador (& Galapagos Islands)
  • Madagascar*
  • Philippines
  • South Africa*
  • United Arab Emirates

*South Africa, Madagascar, Kenya also require you to have two blank pages left in your passport; Namibia requires one blank page.

Valid for 180 days

India requires a more specific 180 days of validity from the date you arrive. It also asks visitors to have two blank pages available for their visa.

Japan introduces e-Visa for Indian tourists: From eligibility criteria to application process, here's a complete guide

Japan has streamlined its visa process for indian travellers with the introduction of evisas. here's your quick guide to the hassle-free application process..

Indian passport holders no longer need to carry a physical visa sticker to travel to Japan. From April 1, Japan began issuing eVisas to Indian travellers. The much-awaited Japan e-Visa programme allows anyone to apply for a visa electronically through Japan Visa Application Centres operated by VFS Global. This programme allows visitors to enter Japan for up to 90 days for tourism purposes.

Indian passport holders can now travel to Japan with an eVisa instead of a physical visa sticker. (Pixabay)

Under the revised system, applicants must still submit their applications to the Visa Application Centres overseen by VFS Global, which is the same process as before. However, one notable change is in the way visas are issued. Instead of receiving traditional visa stickers affixed to their passports, successful applicants will now receive electronic visas. (Also read: Travelling to the USA for baseball game? Check these 5 best hotels near major league stadiums that can save your money )

The e-Visa process requires travellers to present a 'visa issuance notice' on their mobile device upon arrival at the airport. It's important to note that internet access is required for this process. Any format other than a digital visa issuance notice, including PDFs, photos, screenshots or printed copies, will not be considered valid.

What are the eligibility criteria

Citizens and residents of the following countries and regions are eligible: Brazil, Taiwan, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, South Africa, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Cambodia, Saudi Arabia, USA. Additionally, Indian citizens and foreign nationals residing in India are also included in the eligibility criteria. Residents of these countries or regions, with exceptions for those exempt from short-term visas, can apply for an eVisa through the Japan e-Visa website.

How to apply

Here's a step-by-step guide to the application process:

Step 1: To initiate the application process, individuals should access the official website of the Japan Visa Application Centre, managed by VFS Global, by visiting https://visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/jpn/.

Step 2: Choose the "Temporary Visitor Visa" option and review all visa requirements carefully. Download the application form, fill it out accurately, and print it. Ensure all fields are completed. Additionally, prepare photocopies of the required documents for the single-entry short-term tourism visa.

Step 3: Schedule an appointment to submit your application at the Visa Application Centre. Once booked, you'll receive a confirmation email for your appointment, which will include the letter of appointment.

Step 4: Submit your completed visa application form at the center during your appointment. Then, wait for an email notification informing you when your decision is ready for collection. You can track the progress of your visa application online using the reference number provided on your invoice or receipt. Approved applicants for the eVisa will receive an electronic visa instead of a physical visa sticker. However, travelers are required to show a "visa issuance notice" on their mobile devices upon arrival at the airport.

Step 5: At the airport check-in, display the "visa issuance notice" on your device. The travel agency will furnish a "Visa Issuance Notice" inclusive of a two-dimensional barcode. Scan the barcode using your device and input the required details to access the notice. Tap "Display" to view the electronic "visa issuance notice."

During the application process, individuals may be required to appear in person at the Japanese overseas establishment with jurisdiction over the applicant's place of residence for an interview.
