Cherai Beach

Jew Synagogue and Jew Town

Mattancherry Palace

This Portuguese palace, also known as the Dutch Palace is one of the prime places to visit in Kochi due to its historic relevance. This quadrangular palace built in typical Kerala Nalukettu style has a courtyard in the centre where is seated Pazhayannur Bhagavati' the goddess of the Kochi royal family. St Francis Church

Santa Cruz Basilica

This is considered to be one of the 8 Basilicas in Kerala. Chottanikara Bhagavathy Temple

This is the most visited and highly revered Hindu temple down south. The temple is believed to be 1500 years old where the goddess Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Amman and the Keezhu Kaavu Bhadrakali Amman are worshipped as healing goddesses. Gowreeswara Temple Cherai

Built in 1912, this popular temple in Kochi is dedicated to Lord Murugan also referred to as the South Pazhani. The idol was installed by Sree Narayana Guru and is the only temple in Asia that is a Chaturmukha Kovil, which means four side doors. 5. Malayattoor

Don’t forget to explore the tourist places outside Kochi too. There are tourist sports around Ernakulam which are very interesting such as the Church at Malayattoor. The name `Malayattoor’ is an amalgamation of three small words. Mala (Mountain) Arr (River) Oore (Place). This is to say, Malayattoor is a meeting place of mountain, river, and land.

The most famous tourist attraction in Malayattoor is the Malayatoor Church is situated atop the 609 m high Malayatoor Hill. The church on top of the hill is dedicated to St. Thomas, who is believed to have prayed at this shrine when he came to India.

6. Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary

Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary is a small forest in the middle of the city at an area of 2.74 Hectares. It is called as Green Lung of Kochi City and the temperature here is usually 1-2 Degree Celsius less than the main city. This area is located near Kerala High Court and has mangroves and trees. Even though it is called bird sanctuary, you need to be lucky enough to see birds when you are visiting. However you can see a lot of bats and mangrove trees for an entry fee of Rs.10 and view a small treehouse as well.

7. Kerala Folklore Museum

If you’re interested in Kerala’s heritage and culture, the Kerala Folklore Museum is a must-visit. It has a vast collection of 25000+ antique items like coins, murals, monuments, statues, jewellery, paintings, dresses etc  displayed in a small space collected by a single man from all over India as a private collection. Everything from ancient pottery and coins to traditional costumes and musical instruments is on display here, making it easy to explore everything in a limited space. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, so they can answer any questions or provide additional information about the exhibits. Entry fee is R.100 for Indians and Rs.200 for foreigners and camera is allowed as well.

8. Jewish Synagogue

The Paradesi Synagogue, also known as the Cochin Jewish synagogue or Mattancherry Synagogue, is a historic synagogue located in Jew Town in Mattancherry, Kerala. It was built in 1568 A.D., on land given by the Raja of Kochi, Ravi Varma. The synagogue has many rare antiques and its beautiful light fixtures made from glass chandeliers hanging from large windows are a sight to behold.

Blue Willow patterned floor tiles imported from China were installed in 18th century AD; copper plates documenting this royal order are preserved inside the synagogue too. The synagogue is open every day except Fridays, Saturdays and Jewish holidays (which fall on different days each year). Visitors can visit it during morning prayers from 10am-12 noon or afternoon services between 3pm-5pm

9. Cherai beach

Cherai beach which is among the best beaches in Kerala and which is a beach that is shallow, calm, and is ideal for swimming & sunbathing and is also known as Princess of Arabian Sea. The charm of the popular getaway is enhanced by the palm-fringed backwaters and the frequent appearance of dolphins in the water makes it one of the most beautiful places to visit in Kochi.

Just near to Cherai beach is the Vypeen Island  which is another island that is really popular among visitors to Kochi & Kerala. Vypeen is also the location of Pallipuram Fort which is the oldest surviving fort in India built by European settlers and was constructed in 1503.

10. Kodanand Elephant Training Centre

Kodanad Elephant Training Center which is a rural riverside village located near Periyar river is another must visit place if you are travelling to Kerala with children as kids may enjoy bathing elephants in the river . Watching elephants at an arms length is a wonderful experience and all part of coming to a beautiful place like Kerala.

Kodanad is among the Ecotourism destination projects of Govt of India and currently is an Elephant rescue center for captured Elephants from the forests in the adjoining mountains.

11. Andhakaranazhi Beach

Andhakaranazhi is still a virgin & lovely beach which is located at a distance of 30 km from Kochi towards Alleppey located near Ezhupunna and is among the best beaches near Kochi . The sight of local fishermen launching out the everyday morning in their country boats attacking the turbulent waves of the Andhakaranazhi beach is a must-see. 12. Marine Drive

The Marine Drive was built on the land reclaimed from backwaters and the initial plan was to build a beautiful road along the coast line but the coastline rules prohibited it because of which the road was converted to a walkway which also has a Chinese Fishing net bridge as well.

13. Hill Palace Museum

Hill Palace was the abode of erstwhile Maharaja of Kochi and was converted by a Museum in 1986. The museum complex exhibits crown and ornaments of erstwhile Cochin royal family, paintings, sculptures in stone and marble, weapons, inscriptions, coins, etc and has an archaeological museum, a heritage museum, a deer park, a pre-historic park, and a children’s park.

The weapon gallery & horse cart gallery are really amazing. Being the largest archaeological museum of Kerala and the official residence of Cochin Maharaja, it is one of the best Kochi tourist places to understand heritage and culture.

14. Museum of Kerala history, Edappally

When you visit the Museum of Kerala history in Edappally, you will be greeted by a statue of Parasurama, the sage who is said to have created Kerala. This is a monument to the history of Kerala and is one of the best tourist places in Kochi to understand history of Kerala .

The museum is a quiet ethnic building hidden in the shades of huge trees and has an unassuming gallery that houses immortal creations that will give you glimpses of the glorious history and rich cultural legacy of Kerala.

Hello George, my name is priya from mumbai and I’m going to be in Kochi for 2 days and will be based at the Infopark. I have one full day from 8 am to 6pm and the second day i need to reach the airport by 6pm. On surfing , i would love to see Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, SAnta cruz Basilica, Walk around and Jew town and see the synagogue, Marine Drive, museum of Kerala history. Can you help me plan this ? Go on a Heritage Walk of Fort Kochi

The best way to acquaint yourself with Fort Kochi and the events that have shaped it is to begin with a guided heritage walk covering the essential landmarks. These include Fort Immanuel, the Dutch Cemetery, Santa Cruz Basilica, and Saint Francis Church (believed to be the oldest European church in India) built by the Portuguese in the 16th century. Saint Francis is most famous for being the burial site of explorer Vasco de Gama, who died in Kochi in 1524 before his remains were taken back to Portugal.

The main attraction there is Mattancherry Dutch Palace , built by the Portuguese and presented to the Raja of Kochi in 1555, then renovated by the Dutch in 1663. Inside is a small museum and some rare art inside, including paintings of previous kings and some beautiful murals from the Hindu epics.

In the heart of Mattancherry, between Mattancherry Dutch Palace and the Pardesi Jewish Synagogue , is a quaint area known as Jew Town by the locals. It's the center of the spice trade in Kochi, and the air is filled with the heady waft of masala. These days, you won't find many Jewish people there. The local Jewish population has been outnumbered by an influx of Kashmiri shopkeepers who hawk their wares to tourists. However, the synagogue remains in use. Its interior is resplendent with chandeliers, a gold pulpit, and imported floor tiles.

Bazaar Road, which runs along the Mattancherry waterfront, also has a spice market.

Toss a Fishing Net

The iconic Chinese Fishing Nets, undoubtedly Kochi's most recognizable sight, have been there since the 14th century and are remarkably still in use today. Take a turn at the net, as the local fisherman will show you how they're operated in return for a small fee.

Kathakali is a very unusual and ancient form of dance-drama traditional to Kerala . One of the best things to do in Kochi is to pay a visit to the Mattancherry Palace , which includes Kerala murals showing exhibits and portraits of Rajas of Kochi. The Palace was originally built by the Portuguese in 1555 and presented to Verra Kerala Varma, the Raja of Kochi, as a grand token of appreciation. Later in 1663, additional restorations and extensions were carried out by the Dutch, which is why it is also known as the Dutch Palace.

The Chinese Fishing Nets in Kochi are often regarded as one of the most picturesque sights in Kochi. Legends tell that these nets were originally brought down from the royal courts of Kublai Khan, the great Chinese emperor and introduced in 14th century by Zheng He, a Chinese explorer to the local fisherman in Kochi. The Jewish Synagogue in Kochi is the oldest of its kind in the Commonwealth of Nations. It is locally known as Paradesi Synagogue since it was mostly visited by Jews from the Middle East and Europe, who were deemed as foreigners or pardesi. St. Francis Church

The second city of Kerala, Kochi remains a thriving harbour to the present day, with a modern economy based on IT services, shipbuilding, gold trading and tourism.

As a visitor you’ll spend most of your time in the Old Kochi neighbourhood, where the layers of Dutch, Portuguese, British and Jewish influence can be seen in the old mansions and waterfront warehouses or godowns .

Many of these have been converted into hotels and restaurants, offering a charming glimpse of the open sea and harbour on both the Fort Kochi and Mattancherry side of the peninsula.

Where is Kochi?

Kochi is located on the south west coast of India, within the state of Kerala. Kochi (formerly known as Cochin) is the port city of Kerala, while the state capital of Thiruvananthapurum (Trivandrum) lies further the south.

Offering access to both the sea and the inland waterways known as the Backwaters , Kochi is the gateway to “God’s own country” of Kerala. Follow the coastline north, and you’ll pass through the state of Karnataka, whose principle city is Bengaluru (Bangalore), and beyond to the beaches of Goa.

To the south and east is the state of Tamil Nadu, divided from Kerala by the Western Ghats, a mountain range offering tea estates and cooler temperatures.

Things to do in Kochi -around Fort Kochi

Named after the the area where the Portuguese first built Fort Emmanuel in the 16th Century, Fort Kochi is located on the north west tip of the Old Kochi peninsula, facing the sea. This is where many of the tourist attractions in Kochi are located and it’s the best place to start exploring.

1. Chinese fishing nets

Watch the fishermen at the Chinese nets , and help to operate them if you are happy to offer a tip. From a frame of bamboo poles, the elegant nets are lowered from a series of jetties close to Vasco da Gama Square and require several fishermen to operate each one.

Said to be introduced to the region by traders from China, the much photographed nets in Fort Kochi operate mainly for the benefit of the tourists.

You’ll get the best photos of the Chinese fishing nets either from the shore near Vasco da Gama Square, or by walking a little south to look back at them from one of the stone jetties. Feel free to venture onto one of the wooden jetties, to take a closer look at the nets, indeed you may be encouraged to do so by the fisherman.

However, a tip to each of the fishermen is expected, so you may want to check with other tourists what the ‘going rate’ is and make sure you have some small change.

Similar nets can be seen on other parts of the coast or in the backwaters, usually operated at night with lights used to attract the fish. Stalls set up nearby to sell fresh fish, which we heard you can take to a nearby food stall to be cooked.

2. Sunset walk on the beach promenade

Walk along the beachfront promenade overlooking Riverside Beach, from Vasco da Gama Square to Old Lighthouse Beach. This is one of the top things to do in Kochi at night, with street food stalls and cafes open near the beach throughout the day and at sunset.

If you make the walk during the daytime, you may see the remains of the walls of the Portuguese fort and pass the 18h century Dutch cemetery, although this is not generally open except by arrangement.

Just behind the beach promenade is the English Parade Ground, once used for drilling British soldiers, but now used as a cricket pitch.

A lovely place to stop for coffee or lunch is the Pandhal Cafe in the garden of David Hall Gallery, housed in an old Dutch bungalow, which is now an arts centre.

Unfortunately the beaches of Kochi are not suitable for swimming, due to the large amount of weed that is washed up, and the water pollution from the busy lake channel. Better to save your beach time for the end of the trip, when you can relax along the sandy shores south of Kochi, in resorts such as Mararikulam or Varkala.

3. Church of St Francis Fort Kochi

Just north of the Parade Ground is the Church of St Francis , which dates back to the 16th century and was built by the Portuguese who had set up the fort nearby. As the trading and colonial landscape changed over the years, the church was later used by the Dutch, then the British.

The interior of St Francis church is simple and austere, but it’s notable for the swinging fans or punkahs , which hang down from the ceiling and were used to cool the congregation. To one side of the church is the empty tomb of Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama, who was originally buried here in 1524, before his body was returned to Portugal.

3. Santa Cruz Basilica in Fort Kochi

Another much visited church is the imposing Santa Cruz Basilica , built in 1887 on the site of a much older Portuguese cathedral. The original cathedral was used by the protestant Dutch as an arms store, and was demolished by the British when they took over Fort Kochi in the 18th century.

Although it’s not as old as the Church of St Francis, Santa Cruz Basilica has pretty, painted interiors and stained glass windows. With its twin spires and attractive whitewashed decoration, the church is set on a spacious campus and is a much loved and visited attraction in Fort Kochi.

5. Relax in an art cafe

For a dip into the arty side of Kochi, check out the art exhibitions on display at art cafes such as David Hall Gallery or Kashi Art Cafe . Both host displays of art and sculpture by local and regional artists, as well as selling great coffee, brunch and lunch dishes.

Kashi Art Cafe looks unremarkable from the narrow side street, but through the doorway you’ll pass through the exhibition space to a series of small covered courtyards beyond. The menu wouldn’t be out of place in an achingly trendy London cafe (with prices to match!).

On offer are plenty of vegan and veggie options, good coffee or smoothies and all the usual brunch dishes. You’ll eat surrounded by art and sculpture, and this is a cafe that’s popular with international travellers.

David Hall Gallery is located in a 17th century Dutch bungalow, the remaining one of three built around here by the Dutch East India Company. The house was later named David Hall after the wealthy Jewish Koder family who lived here.

Within the bungalow are three large gallery rooms, devoted to exhibitions of contemporary local and international art. The cultural centre also hosts music, art and film events and workshops.

Walk through the gallery spaces to find Pandhal Cafe, set in a leafy walled garden. The cafe is open for brunch, lunch and dinner, serving western style dishes and pizzas, open daily except Monday.

Both gallery and cafe are run by sustainable boutique hotel group CGH Earth, whose hotels we stayed in while in the Kerala backwaters. You can also stay in their boutique hotels Brunton Boatyard and Eighth Bastion in Fort Kochi.

Other art cafes in Old Kochi to look out for include:

• Mocha Art cafe – located in Jewtown, close to the Pardesi Synagogue
• Qissa Cafe – in Fort Kochi on the ground floor of No 18 Hotel
• Teapot Cafe – close to Santa Cruz Basilica on Peter Celli Street, decorated with vintage teapots

6. Street art in Kochi and the Kochi-Muziris Biennale

Wandering around Fort Kochi, we noticed some street art , especially in the Mattancherry neighbourhood around Pepper House and Bazaar Road. While the murals are not on the scale of some cities where street art festivals have been held (like Bristol where we live), they still make a charming addition to the streets of Old Kochi.

Most of the street art was created as part of the Kochi – Muziris Biennale exhibition of contemporary art, which is held every 2 years. During the event, exhibitions and installations are set up in public spaces, heritage buildings and art spaces throughout Old Kochi, together with a programme of music, film and performance events.

Pepper House was used in the past as a base for the Biennale, hence there are quite a few murals on the streets around this part of Kochi. The last Biennale event was held in 2022-2023.

7. Shopping for authentic souvenirs in Old Kochi

If you enjoy shopping for authentic souvenirs, both Fort Kochi and Jew Town have a wide range of shops with items you’ll want to take home.

In Fort Kochi, Princess Street and the roads around it are a good place to shop for textiles, especially block print clothing designs. While this style of textile printing is traditionally more of a North India craft, we still enjoyed buying some colourful shirts and tops to wear on our holiday.

In Jew Town, especially the streets leading to the Pardesi Synagogue, you’ll similarly find lots of shops selling clothing and other souvenirs aimed at tourists. This is also the area where there were traditionally lots of antique shops.

They were set up when most of Kochi’s Jewish community left India and needed to sell off their possessions. Don’t expect to find many genuine antiques from that era, but it’s still worth a browse if antiques appeal to you.

We also enjoyed a walk along the long stretch of Bazaar Road, where there are numerous shops selling sacks of spices and chillis. While most of them are for the local wholesale market, you’ll find some woman’s co-operatives that you can support by buying spices to take home.

We bought some more arty gifts at the Pepper House shop, which was full of covetable items and trendy clothes from Indian artists.

If you are looking for modern shopping malls, you are better to take the ferry from Mattancherry across to Kochi’s modern city of Ernakulam. Here you’ll find all the shopping you’d expect from a bustling Indian city, including sari shops, sparkling jewellery and air conditioned malls with brands you’ll recognise from back home.

8. Kathakali Show – a cultural highlight of Kerala

Take in a Kathakali Show to experience this south Indian dance form which is performed in Hindu temples, telling the stories of the gods. The ritual theatre form takes place in long sessions over many hours, during the religious festivals held during the winter months. For visitors, shorter shows designed to showcase the art form are held all year round.

There are a number of different venues in Kochi that offer Kathakali shows, the best known being the Kerala Kathakali Centre opposite Santa Cruz Basilica. This is the show that we attended, since they offer nightly performances throughout the year.

Ask your hotel to prebook your ticket and request a seat near the front so that you get a good view during the performance, or otherwise arrive early to buy tickets on the door.

We really enjoyed the show performed in a small theatre, with live music and three Kathakali dancers. The evening was enhanced by the hour before the show, during which we could watch the performer’s make up being applied on the stage in front of us.

This was followed by a demonstration of the different Kathakali eye and hand movements, with explanations of the emotions they conveyed, such as love, fear and surprise.

Finally we watched the performance itself, a tale of good and evil, during which a Prince comes to the aid of a Brahmin (holy man) who is being terrorised by a Demon. The Prince provokes the Demon by eating all the food that has been left as an offering, but in the ensuing fight the Prince overcomes and kills the Demon.

Each of the characters is signified by a different coloured face and costume, with the story being conveyed through hand and eye movements as well as the dance, since the characters do not speak. The Kathakali show was followed by another show, displaying the Kalaripayattu Martial Arts , another art form that is traditional to Kerala.

Things to see in Kochi – Mattancherry

The neighbourhood of Mattancherry is located on the north eastern side of the Old Kochi peninsula, and was the spice trading neighbourhood. The waterfront here is lined with paint peeling warehouses or Godowns that overlook the inland lagoon, separating Old Kochi from Willingdon island and the modern city of Ernakulam.

9. Mattancherry Palace

Mattancherry Palace is also known as the Dutch Palace and was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century as a gift for the Raja of Cochin. It later become known as the Dutch Palace following renovations made by the Dutch traders during their period of control over Kochi.

The palace is known for the original wall murals illustrating ancient stories of the gods from the Hindu Ramayana. These wall paintings are well preserved and richly coloured, but unfortunately photos are strictly forbidden, so I’m not able to show you them here.

In other rooms of the palace you can see old maps from the Dutch colonial period of Kochi’s history, as well as robes, weapons and furniture belonging to the royal family. One gallery houses life sized portraits of all the kings of Kerala from 1864. The palace is open daily except Friday with a small entrance fee.

10. Jew Town

Walk along the pretty streets of Jew town , where there are numerous antique and souvenir shops. There was a large Jewish population in Kochi from the 1500s, when the Jewish community in a coastal settlement north of Kochi came under attack, moving here under the protection of the Raja of Cochin.

The community numbers were further increased by the Pardesi (literally foreign) Jews who arrived, fleeing persecution in the 16th century from Spain and Portugal. Their European connections help them set up as merchants in the booming spice trade, with wealthy Jewish families such as the Koders becoming closely connected with the Raja.

The Jew Town neighbourhood has many old style houses and warehouses, that now mainly serve as tourist shops and cafe, attracting visitors as they head towards the Pardesi synagogue. Most of the Jewish population of Kochi left India for Israel after independence, and there are plenty of shops selling antiques, a legacy of all the goods sold off by those who departed India.

You’ll also find plenty of cafes and restaurants here, and we can recommend the Ginger House restaurant where we had lunch. A walk past the hotel’s antique shop will bring you to a pretty green courtyard and lovely setting for the restaurant overlooking the lake.

11. Pardesi Synagogue

Visit the Pardesi Synagogue , erected in the 17th century, with its beautiful chandeliers and hand painted blue and white willow pattern tiles. It was the Pardesi Jewish community who built their synagogue close to the Mattancherry palace, rebuilding it after the Portuguese threw out the Dutch and burned the synagogue to the ground in 1662.

Most of the Pardesi community emigrated to Israel after Indian independence, a reason why many antique shops grew up in this neighbourhood to sell off their possessions. The synagogue is decorated with coloured glass lamps and numerous sparkling crystal chandeliers, suspended from the coffered ceiling.

On the floor are blue and white hand painted tiles in a willow pattern imported from Canton in China. Around the walls of the synagogue are interesting information boards to help you understand the history of the Jewish community in Kochi.

There is a small charge to visit the synagogue, which is closed on Saturdays for the Jewish Sabbath and on occasions when there is a service.

12. Soak up the atmosphere of Bazaar Road

From Mattancherry Palace, walk north along Bazaar Road , with its atmospheric but crumbling riverfront warehouses and wholesalers of pepper, chillis and other spices. There aren’t any particular tourist sights here, but it’s a pleasant place to wander, just to absorb the feeling of daily life and sense the former prosperity of Mattancherry.

For every one of the warehouses that have been restored (Like Bloom boutique waterfront hotel where we stayed) there are three more that look as if they could fall down at any minute. Yet the peeling but vibrant paint colours and glimpses through doorways to the river beyond, make this a charming location.

Bazaar Road is full of spice traders and grocery shops, their open sacks overflowing with red chillis, cinnamon and beans making an attractive picture. This is still an area of spice wholesalers, and if you walk beyond the Eraveli Canal bridge, you’ll arrive at the jetty to take the ferry to Erakulam.

A little further and the road turns into Calvathy Road, where we recommend the fish and seafood for lunch at the waterfront Seagull Restaurant .

A great way to see Old Kochi is on this private half day tuk tuk tour , where you’ll visit all the main sights and get the insights of a knowledgeable driver / guide.

13. Ferry from Old Kochi to Ernakulam

Take the ferry across the lake to Ernakulum , the modern part of Kochi. The ferries are inexpensive and run several times an hour, taking commuters back and forth from one side of the lake to the other. You can also stop off halfway at Willingdon Island , to wander around the lakeside park.

Although you can also reach Ernakulum by auto rickshaw, it’s a less expensive and more relaxing journey to cross by the ferry. Just turn up at the ferry terminal north of the Eraveli canal in Mattancherry and check the times for the next ferry, which are posted there.

Shortly before the ferry arrrives, the ticket window will open to sell tickets and as the cost is just a few rupees, you need to pay in cash. There is a separate ticket window for ladies, who can buy tickets for several people. The queue is often shorter, so you can send the lady of your party to purchase all your tickets. Board the ferry as early as you can, in order to bag a window seat, with a great view over the water.

14. Museums in Fort Kochi

There are a few interesting museums that you may be interested in visiting, if you have a bit of extra time in Kochi.

Kerala Folklore Theatre and Museum

This is located on the Ernakulam side of Kochi, a 20 minute tuk tuk ride from Fort Kochi. The privately owned museum is housed in a traditional Keralan building of wood and laterite stone, which was constructed by combining several heritage buildings. Inside is a huge display of antique artefacts from all over Kerala, including temple carvings, jewellery and household objects. There is also a shop selling antiques, artisan objects and textiles.

Hill Palace Museum at Thripunitra

Just outside Kochi on the road to Munnar you’ll pass the Hill Palace Museum, which was built in 1865 as the main residence of the rulers of Kochi. The large palace complex is set in 52 acres of land, and now houses a heritage museum for the collections of the royal family. If heading to Munnar, you could arrange a stop here with your driver, although you’d probably need at least a couple of hours to do it justice.

Indian Maritime Naval Museum

A small museum in Fort Kochi which is run by the Indian Navy, with models and information about maritime history within Kochi and Kerala. The grounds house a helicopter, missiles and other military artefacts.

Indo Portuguese Museum

This small museum in Fort Kochi is housed in the former Bishop’s Palace built in 1557 and houses the Catholic artefacts collected from the churches of Kochi. Some of the ruins of the Portuguese fort can be seen in the basement and there are pleasant gardens.

15. Boat trip on the backwaters

A fun thing to do near Kochi is to spend some time in the Kerala backwaters, the network of lagoons and canals that run south of Kochi. We enjoyed a night on one of the houseboats that take guests around the area of Vembanad Lake as well as a night at one of the lakeside hotels. However, if your time is short, you can also experience the backwaters by taking a day trip from Kochi. Many tours will drive you down to Alleppuzha (Alleppey) which takes up to 2 hours. But some like this half day backwaters tour start just outside Kochi and take you around the areas of backwaters closer to the city.

We really enjoyed our time on the backwaters, observing people going about their daily lives on the side canals and spotting plenty of bird life. Whether you experience it on a 1-2 day houseboat cruise or on a shorter day trip, the Kerala Backwaters are an unmissable part of your trip to southern India.

Where to stay in Kochi

As most visitors to Kochi will only spend a couple of days there, we recommend staying close to the main sites of Old Kochi. There are numerous hotels and homestays in Fort Kochi , with a good range in Mattancherry and on the northern tip of the peninsula between them.

Staying in Fort Kochi will give you access to most of the tourist attractions within an easy walk, as well as a wide range of restaurants. Fort Kochi is where I would recommend you stay as a solo traveller, since you can safely walk around on well lit streets at night to find places to eat.

Our 10 day itinerary for Kerala allows 2 nights in Kochi and we recommend Bloom Boutique Waterfront (boutique heritage hotel where we stayed) or Old Harbour Hotel (luxury heritage hotel).

We stayed at Bloom Boutique Waterfront Hotel in Mattancherry, which was full of atmosphere with lakeside views, a 15 minute tuk tuk ride away from Fort Kochi.

There are a few hotels on Willingdon Island , but for a short visit this is a less convenient location, since you will need to take a ferry and tuk tuk to reach the tourist sites of Fort Kochi and Mattancherry.

Another possibility is to stay in the modern city of Ernakulam just across the water from Old Kochi. While this is conveniently close for the airport and train stations, it’s a noisy and bustling area that cannot match the heritage charm of Fort Kochi.

If staying in Fort Kochi or Mattancherry, we recommend staying in one of the many heritage hotels or homestays / guest houses that have been converted from old mansions or warehouses, sometimes overlooking the lake. Check out all the hotels in Kochi .

How to get to Kochi

Arriving by air.

Many travellers arrive at Kochi Airport, on an internal flight from one of the larger airport hubs in India or via the Gulf States. Cochin international airport is located outside the city, around 45 minutes drive from Fort Kochi.

If you want to take a taxi to your hotel, go to the pre-paid taxi stand outside the airport. Here you will be informed of the price and handed a ticket with this rate to give to the driver. You then pay the driver directly at the end of your journey. Buses are also available from the airport to both Fort Kochi and Ernakulum.

Arriving by train

Another popular way to arrive in Kochi from other cities in India, is by long distance train. We travelled on the overnight train from Bangalore, which arrived in Kochi early in the morning.

Be aware that reserved seats and sleeper compartments, for long distance trains in 1st and 2nd class, tend to book up well ahead. It’s best to ask your travel agent to book a seat / sleeper compartment in advance, or to make a reservation at any major station, as soon as you arrive in India.

Places to visit after Kochi

Travelling on to munnar – misty tea estates.

After Kochi, we took a private taxi for the 4 hour drive up into the foothills of the Western Ghats and the town of Munnar. The cooler temperatures are a refreshing change from the steamy heat of the coast, and you can hike through tea estates, stop at waterfalls and reservoirs or just enjoy the views.

We recommend you book at the Windermere Estate (heritage tea bungalow) or Green Valley Vista Guest House (budget guest house), although there are many more hotels in Munnar .

Travelling on to Alleppey – the Kerala Backwaters

Another popular location just south of Kochi is the Kerala Backwaters, the network of inland canals and lakes that sit just behind the coast. If you’d like to try the iconic Kerala experience of staying on a houseboat, head to Alleppey where most are based, or take tours of the backwaters on smaller boats from a lakeside hotel.

In order to tread as lightly as possible in this delicate eco-system, we decided to book our houseboat through Spice Coast Cruises , owned by luxury operator CGH Earth, who are known for their sustainable practices. The outside of the Pardesi synagogue was fairly modest, but the inside was open, full of light and not cluttered with heavy furniture. The chandeliers were extremely attractive.

I realise that most of the Jewish population of Kochi left India for Israel after independence, but spouse and I were very pleased to see the extant community facilities, antique shops and clothes markets.

1. Ernakulam Shiva Temple

Kerala is now synonymous with the image of Chinese fishing nets across the setting sun. Even though I have visited Kerala several times, I am still mesmerised by it. 

The Mahatma Gandhi Walkway offers silhouettes—the Chinese nets placed in a line against a setting sun and fishmongers selling their fresh catch. This is a picture that will stay with you for a long time and thus makes it one of the epic places to visit in Kochi.

Also, bargain with a fishmonger near the Chinese nets at Fort Kochi, and pick your choice of fish for a quick barbecue at one of the nearby stalls.

In addition to Fort Kochi, these nets can also be seen at other places to visit in Kochi like while coming from the airport via the Vallarpadam route and also from the new Marine drive at a distance.

Nilu’s protip:

Take a turn at the net, as the local fisherman will show you how they’re operated and enthusiastically let you participate in the fishing activity in return for a small fee. It’s your chance for some unique pics and an experience like nothing else.

2. Take a Heritage Walk around Fort Kochi Kerala

Fort Kochi encompasses some of the best places to visit in Kochi together. Peek into the city’s thriving history, with remnants of Portuguese, Dutch and British influences. 

Your heritage walk should include:

St Francis Church (India’s oldest European Church) where the body of the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama was buried originally.

The Chinese Fishing nets, the trademark image that Cochin is famous for.

Interesting houses around the park like Tower House, Koder House, Old Harbour Hotel

Fort Immanuel.

The Dutch Cemetery.

Mattancherry Palace— beautifully built by the Portuguese. 

Paradesi Synagogue in Jew Town, Mattancherry— the oldest (450 years) active synagogue in India & all the commonwealth nations.

Bishop’s House Road and the beautiful old-style homes.

Santa Cruz Basilica.

The places to visit are at walking distance & can be visited all together in about 2-3 hours.There’s also a local shopping area near the beach & some roads have been cordoned off for vehicles so there’re only pedestrian walkways for the ease of tourists. There are legendary cafes like Kashi Art Cafe & other pretty European styled cafes which are a treat to the eyes & taste buds as well.

You can join the 2 hour cruise tours from Marine Drive boat jetty to Fort Kochi conducted by Kerala KTDC, the tourist department as it covers the major spots with a tour guide plus, you can enjoy the  boat ride too.

There are 2 trips- morning & evening.

3. Jew Town, Fort Kochi Kerala

Paradesi Synagogue naturally sits in this area; it’s embellished with lanterns, and a collection of scrolls from the Old Testament. Its interior is decorated with chandeliers, gold pulpit, and ceramic tiled floors.

Note: Taking pictures inside the synagogue was permitted earlier but quite recently has been prohibited for better preservation.

Jew Town in Mattancherry was the place where the Jews from overseas had settled. This entire area in Kochi Kerala has retained parts of its Jewish heritage.

Quaint shops around Synagogue Lane and Jew Town Road sell antiques, carvings, painted cow heads, little house boats & hand made soaps along with Keralan crafts and aromatic spices. Jew street really  has some very interesting antiques & gifting items.

Laid-back outdoor cafes and artsy eateries in heritage buildings, serve local specialties and Western fare. This is one of the cutest places to visit in Kochi if you ask me. 😀

3. Mattancherry Spice Market

Mistress of spices: Fort Kochi Kerala!

Mattancherry is one of those places to visit in Kochi that’s a feast for the eyes & the nose too…with a burst of colours & smells, it takes pride in being one of the most famed spice and tea trading centres. So overpowering were these smells that I began to understand why people from faraway lands were so obsessed with this village ages ago.

The Spice Market is a one of a kind place that also allows you to see the workers going about their job– like drying spices, segregating, processing, etc.

It is also a great place to buy quality spices at very reasonable prices.

4. Cultural shows at Fort Kochi Kerala

Kathakali is a very unique and ancient form of dance that’s traditional to Kerala. The movements of the dance are powerful and narrate interesting mythological stories. The performers are required to undergo intense training, including hours of eye exercises, when learning the art of Kathakali. 

Most performances begin with a sole artist performing the ‘Navarasa’- the nine basic human emotions; to acquaint the audiences better with the performance.

The audiences can  also watch a show of Kalaripayattu – the ancient sword fighting tradition.

We watched the show at Greenix, it gives you more for your money in terms of infrastructure. The Kathakali performance starts from 6 pm while the make up starts at 5pm and goes on till 6 pm. They also encourage taking pictures with dancers. The ticket charges are INR 400 per person. Greenix houses a cultural museum & a coffee house open from 10 am to 6 pm.They are located right opposite the Fort Kochi Kerala boat jetty.

  Nilu’s protip:

Reach early to catch the elaborate make-up session of the Kathakali dancers in the venue at 5pm, as then you would see the artists dressing up and getting ready for their performance.

By the way, Kathakali performances get booked fast, so I’d recommend booking early. Reserve a spot at the front 2-4 rows to have a good view.

6. Get an ayurvedic massage done

Kerala is also known for its natural Ayurvedic medicine and there are a number of options for getting an Ayurvedic treatment in Cochin Kerala . After walking all day long, exploring a number of places to visit in Kochi, it’s just another excuse for that much needed massage right? 😉

There are many reputed massage centres & spas in Fort Kochi & Ernakulam. Ask your hotel for references, and they’ll be happy to provide.  

7. Local ferry to Fort Kochi & Vypeen

You can’t visit Fort Kochi Kerala and not go for a boat ride! This is, after all, a port city. And boats in fact a regular means of transport for the locals and aren’t just a tourist attraction.

Join the locals on a ferry from Ernakulam to Fort Kochi Kerala, or the other way around. These run throughout the day and you can catch one from the main ferry point. Try exploring places to visit in Kochi through a slightly unusual means of transport, yeah?

The Ernakulam to Fort Kochi boat journey will take about 20 minutes. It costs Rs 4 per person one way- can you believe it? That’s such a steal! Daily there are 30 services to Fort Kochi; the first boat leaves at 6:00AM and the last one at 9:10PM.

8. Shopping in Kochi Kerala- Sarees, Kasavu & Gold

Being a Saree enthusiast and shopaholic, this is my favourite part! 😀

Having lived in Kerala for some years, I can vouch for the fact that it has some of the best Saree collections ever. Make a note of it in your places to visit in Kochi list.

The variety of sarees in Cochin Kerala is unimaginable and better priced  than other places in the country. It in totality is a great experience. 

There are huge multi floor showrooms which have sarees from the cheapest to high end sarees; all kinds.

The gold jewellery would give Dubai souks tough competition! The gold purity is anyway certified, but the designs are mind boggling. Along with traditional designs, they also have modern lightweight designs.  

I love the variety of gold bangles they have, I end up buying a pair every trip! (Guilty)

The Kasavu sarees (traditional off white with golden border sarees), are very elegant & a must buy.

These saree & gold shops are centred around MG Road, so your shopping can be done over an evening.

• Recommended Saree shops: Jayalaxmi, Seemati, Parthas

9. Cherai Beach

Located about 30 km from the heart of Kerala- Kochi, it is the palm-fringed Cherai Beach with a 15 km shoreline. Swim in its gentle slopes, lie around taking in the sun, or go snorkelling. If you are lucky, you can also spot some dolphins. Cherai also offers speedboat, water-scooter, and canoe ride options.

How to get from Fort Kochi to Cherai beach?  

You will need to take a ferry from Fort Kochi Kerala to Vypin Island. 

Once you reach Vypin island, either take a public bus/rick to reach Cherai beach or alternatively, you can hire a bike from the Fort Kochi area and take it along with you in the Ferry. 

The drive from the Vypin Island till Cherai beach will take around an hour.

Alternatively, if you don’t mind spending a bit extra, take an app-based taxi Ola/ Uber to reach the island.

Keeping aside all the other beautiful places to visit in Kochi, coming slightly ahead- this beach is perfect to spend a calm and peaceful evening.

Apart from these iconic places to visit in kochi, you can also enjoy these if you have the time or the inclination.

While the Alleppey backwaters are the most beautiful, you can visit Cochin backwaters towards Vaikom if you are short of time or want to stick to places to visit in Kochi itself.

Kerala is famous for its cuisine, featuring tasty seafood and coconut flavors. Please make sure you wear clothes in accordance, dress below the waist & no bare arms.

Marine Drive in Kochi Kerala is a lakeside promenade and  the haunt of many people, especially couples, who sit on the various benches provided and enjoy a beautiful sunset.

Two rainbow bridges add to the beauty of the place. There are many fiber boats and passenger boats anchored around the marine drive. Enhance your experience further by taking a cruise from Marine Drive at sunset and count it in one of the places to visit in Kochi.

Where to stay in kochi kerala.

For your Kochi trip, I will recommend you to stay in Fort Kochi as this is an old side of the town and popular amongst travelers. There are many old-style buildings in Fort Kochi which have now been turned into luxury and boutique hotels that are near most of the places to visit i Kochi. Depending on your budget, you can choose to stay in one of those Jewish buildings and experience the Old Kochi feel.   There are many luxurious 5 stars by the sea as well as budget hotels & homestays. Pick your choice.

I usually stay at Avenue Regent , MG road, during my trips but this time we stayed in a cute boutique hotel near TDM hall called The Neighbourhood . Great location for shopping and near to the Shiva temple as well as to the boat jetty, metro & train station too.

What to eat in Kochi

Don’t miss eating a Sadya served on a banana leaf! 

Cakes & pastries   in general are good & I love the plum cake in Kochi.

Have the Sharjah shake , a different kind of banana milk shake. 

The variety of bananas in Kerala is varied. There are many banana chip shops selling them fresh, off the oil cauldron & they taste superb.They are also a good takeaway for your friends as they stay good for long.

Where to eat In Fort Kochi

The  Malabar Fish Curry or Fish Fry or even the vegetarian delicacies in restaurants like Rasoi or the filling burgers in the cafes like Bench will leave you wanting more of it.

Kashi Art Cafe is a treat for the art buff in you & for the foodie alike. Sipping on their famous coffees is a must. Fort House restaurant is a fantastic sea facing place for a meal with a view.

There are many European styled cute cafes like Qissa Cafe & Fusion Bay. Solar Cafe is also a famous budget cafe, catering to vegans too.

Treat yourself to some of the best Malabari Biryani – Kayees’ Biryani at Kayees Rahmathullah Café in Mattancherry, or choose to eat some fantastic Malayalee (and other) delicacies from the many stalls on the Vasco Da Gama Square.

Where to eat in Kochi/Ernakulam

Can’t get over the pastries at Cocoa Tree at Avenue Regent – absolutely out of the world. 

Next to it is Arriappa, the trendy place for local food. Their appam & veg stew was great.

On Shanmugam Road (near Jose Junction), check out ‘Idiyappams’ and ‘Paalappams’ at Ceylon Bake House, and team them with their Chicken Chilly.

Grand Pavilion at the Grand Hotel- their special karimeen (pearl spot) pollichathu or the beef fry with a side of buttery, flaky Malabar parotta to go with it.

Mosaic, Momo Cafe,Trilogi are some of the fancy restaurants which cater to vegans too.

The french Toast & The Burger Junction in  Panampilly Nagar are some other favourites this side of town.

Veggies only corner!

The Vegetarian food at BTH & Dwarka near Jos Junction is legendary, with both serving lunch on banana leaves.They also have vegan options.

Gokul Ootupura, near Ernakulam Shiva temple (one of the religious places to visit in Kochi) is another good place for typical vegetarian local food. So is Ambiswamy, near Medical Trust Hospital.

Also sample at least some of the 108 varieties of dosas at Pai’s Thattukada on MG Road.They also cater to vegans.

Maharaja Bhog is a famous  pure veg thali place in Lulu mall,caters to vegans too.

Arya’s is a pure veg food chain & has presence all over Kerala.

Best time to visit Kochi Kerala

October to March is  the best time to visit Cochin Kerala as the weather is very pleasant. Temperatures range between 17 degrees Celsius and 33 degrees Celsius. This is a great time of the year for enjoying your Kerala travel. Places to visit in Kochi are pleasantly cool during this time.

How to reach Kochi Kerala

Kochi serves as a gateway to major destinations in Kerala like Munnar and Alleppey. It has an international airport and is well-connected with most major cities of India and the world. Here is how to reach Kochi.

Cochin International Airport (CIAL), situated about 25 km north of Kochi city at Nedumbassery, handles both domestic and international flights. Prepaid taxis take to your destination. Places to visit in Kochi are quite far from the airport.

Kochi has two major railway stations – Ernakulam Town and Ernakulam Junction (locally known as the North and South railway stations).

Despite its reputation as a bird sanctuary, you’ll need to be very lucky to see any birds when you visit. With a Rs. 10 admission fee, you may visit a tiny treehouse in addition to a large number of bats and mangrove trees. This one is also one of the most popular Kochi Kerala tourist places.

8. Kerala Folklore Museum

If you want to know more about the history and culture of Kerala, go to the Kerala Folklore Museum. Selected as a private collection by a single individual from all over India, it features a huge collection of over 25,000 antique things, including coins, murals, monuments, statues, jewelry, paintings, costumes, and more, all displayed in a tiny space. You can easily explore everything in this little space because everything is on exhibit, from traditional clothing and musical instruments to old pottery and coins. The helpful and courteous staff can provide any inquiries or further information regarding the exhibits. It costs Rs. 200 for foreigners and Rs. 100 for Indians to enter, and visitors are allowed to bring cameras.

9. Cherai Beach

The Princess of the Arabian Sea, also known as Cherai Beach, is one of the nicest beaches in Kerala. It is quiet, shallow, and perfect for swimming and sunbathing. The palm-fringed backwaters and the regular sight of dolphins in the water accentuate the beauty of this popular getaway in Kochi, often overlooked as one of the city’s most picturesque destinations.
