Kon-Tiki museum, Oslo

Day 1:  Learn about Polar expeditions and viking heritage in Oslo

When you arrive in Oslo, you will take the express train to the city center and explore our capital. On the Bygdøy peninsula, just a short ferry ride from the city center, you will find many exciting museums that are waiting for you to be discovered: the Viking Ship Museum with the world’s best-preserved Vikings ships, the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History, the Kon-Tiki museum with exhibits on explorer Heyerdahl’s expeditions including his raft Kon-tiki, and Fram – the Polar Exploration museum. These museums will give you insight into our country’s history and definitely spark the imagination of your children. The zipline down from the Holmenkollen Ski Jump is also a popular activity for children. You will spend the night in a hotel in the city center.

View from mountain farm in Jotunheimen National Park

Day 2: Enjoy a picnic in the home of the giants

Pick up your rental car and enjoy a scenic road trip north to the highest mountain range in Norway, the Jotunheimen National Park, home of the giants. Take a break along the way for a picnic by the lake, where the children always love to build dams or throw stones in the water. After approximately a 5 hour drive, you will arrive at a quiet mountain farm. Surrounded by mountains, glaciers, and with a great view, this is a perfect base for your adventures. You will stay in a log cabin/apartment for the next 3 nights.

Galdhøpiggen, Jotunheimen National Park

Day 3: Conquer Norway’s highest summit or explore an ice tunnel

Today you will have a great day out in nature. You can hike up the highest summit in Norway, Galdhøpiggen, for a great view over the surroundings mountains and glaciers. This hike is done with a guide, joining a group, and is only recommended in good weather and with children from age 12.

Another fun activity is to visit the Climate park and Ice tunnel Mimisbrunnr. Since the ice is melting back to the level of 6000 years ago, hunting posts and ancient hunting gear and clothing have been found here in the past years. During the guided tour you will also learn a lot about the typical permafrost and polygon landscape. From experience, we can tell that also younger children enjoy this tour.

High Rope park, Jotunheimen National Park

Day 4: Climb in the high rope park or explore the area on horseback

There are many adventurous things to do in this area. Today could be a perfect day to test your climbing abilities in the fun high rope trail close to your cabin. There are trails available for young children, teenagers, and adults!

Maybe you rather want to explore the nearby mountains by horseback, or rent bikes and go mountain biking. A good and relaxed alternative is to drive up the Sognefjell mountain pass, part of the Norwegian Scenic Routes, to look at the majestic peaks and glacier fields from the roadside, or by doing a small hike. Lom is also a great place for cultural visits like the Stave Church or the Norwegian Mountain Museum. The children will love the short zipline over the river too.

Geirangerfjord seen from Skageflå

Day 5: Feel tiny while crossing the majestic Geirangerfjord by boat

Venture into the Fjords. The day will start with a scenic drive over the mountain pass Strynefjellet culminating into the winding road down to Geiranger with stunning views over the fjord. A visit to the visitor center/education hub about the West Norwegian Fjords, the Norwegian Fjord Heritage Centre, is recommended. They also have a fun exhibition and a special room for children.

The best way to experience the majestic UNESCO World Heritage-listed Geirangerfjord is from a boat. Take your car aboard the ferry and cruise through the fjord, while the audio guide will tell you all the facts and tales. Experience the impressive Seven Sisters Waterfall and much more.

Continue for an hour drive to your cabin in Nordfjord, in the Stryn area. You will stay here for 3 nights. The standard of the accommodation can be adjusted to your preferences from a very simple authentic Norwegian mountain cabin with a glacier view to a high standard cabin by the glacier lake, a historic family-run hotel, or a 4* hotel with fjord view.

Via Ferrata, Nordfjord

Day 6: Go hiking or climb the Via Ferrata in Nordfjord

Do an easy hike to a hidden glacier, that only the locals know off, and maybe you can even greet the friendly cows that graze around here in the summer. If you are looking for even more adventure with your family, then climbing the Via Ferrata, iron road, is an exciting day activity (only possible for children from age 12). We can also offer a longer private guided hike in the area , where our guides make sure that the hike is adapted to your abilities and the weather, and will tell you all the local fun facts.

Day 7: Explore the Glacier Valley

There is a lot to explore in this area. Take the gondola up the mountain and do an easy hike with views over the fjords and the surrounding glaciers. G rill your sausages on the campfire while hiking.

Relax and play in the in- and outdoor swimming pools of a nearby hotel. Are you more up to a private guided mountain farm visit, we can arrange that for you too. With youngsters cycling along the glacier lake is also fun.

Sheep farm visit, Davik

Day 8: Welcome to our historic fjord farm

After some days in the fjord between glaciers, today is the time to explore the Atlantic Coast. We would love to welcome you to our historic sheep farm from 1865 for a private guided visit. The children will adore to feed the sheep or cuddle with our Norwegian Elkhound Kira. There is a chance that your children want to move in with us, you are hereby warned. Continue to the Coast where the roots of the fishermen culture are, this area is also called Little Lofoten (but without the crowds). You will either stay in an apartment in an old trading post, or in a cabin/hotel room in a cozy fishermen village.

Kayaking, Bremanger

Day 9: Paddle between islands and look for seals and eagles

Join a half-day guided kayak tour along all the small islands and narrow straits. You might even spot a seal or eagle here. This is a great area for small and big adventures: fishing crabs from the pier, doing small or longer hikes with a view over the ocean, spotting sea eagles or go fishing with a professional.

Day 11: Discover the UNESCO listed world heritage city of Bergen

After a few hours’ drive to Bergen, you can spend the rest of the day discovering this charming UNESCO World Heritage-listed city. With its historic wooden houses at Bergen Bryggen and cozy harbourside center and fish market, it is our favorite city. Take the funicular up Mt. Fløyen for a great view over the city. The children will have a lot of fun at the playground up there, and meeting the locals (the goats that are always up for a cuddle). You will stay in a hotel in the city center.

Day 12: End of the journey and flight home

Drop your car off at the airport and take your international flight out. Thank you for visiting our country! If you rather add a few days and discover another part of Norway while driving back to Oslo, this is also possible. Please contact us if you want us to tailor this vacation to your adventurous family.

I've been in love with Europe since my parents first took me on vacation to Germany as a kid and I discovered Haribo. The first time I visited Norway, about eight years ago, it was all over for me. Germany, France, Italy, Holland -- they all took second place once I saw this incredible Nordic land.

Norway has the perfect mix of mountains and ocean, fjords and lakes, city highlights and free camping rights ( allemannsretten is the national mantra that stipulates the right to roam and even camp for free on public lands).

Spending time outside and enjoying all of the county's natural beauty with their families is something Norwegians do year-round. Trust them when they tell you "there's no bad weather, just bad clothing," so layer on the wool to get out there and explore. Norway is a destination with as much to love in the winter months ( northern lights, sledding ) as in the long days of the midnight sun that arrives during the spectacular spring and summer.

How to Get to Norway

I'm always on the lookout for Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) Kids Fly Free deal, where up to eight kids (that's right, eight!) ages 11 and under fly "free" (only paying the cost of taxes and fees) with the purchase of an adult ticket. SAS offers nonstop flights from Miami and New York, bookable with Star Alliance Miles. Norwegian is also always worth checking, with reliable low-cost fares from many US cities, including Miami (MIA), Boston (BOS) and Fort Lauderdale (FLL) to Oslo (OSL) and connecting cities like Bodø (BOO) and Tromsø (TOS) , prime airports for exploring all the beauty of Northern Norway.

You will also find at least a few points-friendly places to stay in some of Norway's major cities such as Oslo ( Marriott Bonvoy , Radisson Rewards ) and Bergen (Radisson Rewards).

9 Norwegian Activities Your Family Will Love

For first-timers to Norway, there's no need to feel overwhelmed. Visit Norway's website which has tons of great resources for trip planning. Keep in mind that the country is almost the size of California, with hundreds of thousands of miles of coastline to explore, islands everywhere and lots to do inland, too. Follow my tips below for the best activities to do with your kids, and I'll bet my next trip to Norway that you're going to have the family trip of a lifetime.

1. Hunt the Northern Lights

The chance to see the northern lights is not the only reason to bundle up for a trip to Northern Norway in the winter (see below for many other incentives, including reindeer sledding). For most visitors, the aurora is at the top of the list for a wintertime trip. Of course, you'll need a little luck to get clear skies and the addition of solar activity to make the northern lights appear. When you head to Norway's northernmost reaches from late September to mid-March, the time of year when skies are still dark at night, chances are good you'll catch the show. Many tourists opt to stay in Tromsø, where the aurora can often be seen right in the city and the guides with Tromsø Safari lead nightly bus tours (about $175 USD per person, ask about discounts for children) to darker surrounding islands to watch the spectacle. Consider heading farther north to the small city of Alta , directly under the aurora oval, where the activity tends to be strongest. Nord Expedisjon is a new company in Alta with experience here and elsewhere in the Arctic. Guides take small groups on van tours ($180 for adults, $87 for kids 12 and under) or walking tours ($115 per person, ask for discounts for kids) in search of the aurora to some of the best locations. Entertaining commentary on local northern lights lore is guaranteed.

2. Take the Kids for a Sled Ride Behind Real Reindeer

You may or may not spot Santa, but there's no denying that reindeer are real when you visit Norway, where reindeer have been raised and herded by the indigenous Sami people for eons. Kids go crazy for the chance to bundle up under a blanket and go for a sled ride through the winter wonderland around Alta as a reindeer pulls them through the snow. North Adventure can help you book exclusive, private tours with the Sami reindeer herders who own Chavzo Safari, during which you'll go reindeer sledding and then warm up in a traditional lavvu tent (similar to a teepee, with a roaring fire inside) and sample a bowl of reindeer stew while the kids listen to stories about Sami traditions. The prices are steep -- about $380 per person and $298 for kids 12 and under -- but the 4.5-hour adventure (including return transfers from Alta) is truly a unique insight into their culture, and worth the splurge for its authenticity and fun factor.

3. Follow the Springtime Reindeer Migration

This one's a very real splurge (around $4,000 per person, all-inclusive), but for an authentic multiday expedition with Norway's native reindeer-herding Sami people, nothing comes close to this adventure in the Finnmark region of Northern Norway . Join a Sami family and their children as they begin the annual migration with their reindeer from inland plains where the animals feed during the winter to their summering grounds along the coast. Visit Natives offers a pricy but life-affirming, five-night experience -- best for older kids, pre-teen age and up -- during which you'll sleep in a tent while migrating with the reindeer. You'll have the chance to try Sami skiing and ice fishing along the way. Dates are available from roughly mid-April to the end of May, every year.

4. Midnight Sun Rib Boat Safaris in Lofoten

From June until August, you can head out with the family on thrilling rib boat safaris in the Lofoten Archipelago for a view of the midnight sun bobbing hear the horizon in the middle of the night and the chance to see sea eagles and seals, too. Lofoten Opplevelser , a friendly tour company run by Lofoten local Rolf Malnes in the beautiful fishing village of Henningsvær, offers exciting three-hour tours that will have the kids shrieking with joy as you speed through narrow fjords out into the Atlantic Ocean. All ages are welcome, but it's best for kids ages 4 and up. It's rare, but every once in a while, whales are also spotted, so keep your eyes peeled. Rates: $116 for adults, $87 for kids 8 and under.

5. Go Whale Watching in Andenes

For the best shot at seeing whales during the summer months in Norway, take the family on a road trip from Lofoten to the tiny, postcard-perfect town of Andenes in Vesterålen. It's about a 3.5-hour, impossibly scenic drive from Henningsvær to reach Whalesafari Andenes , a company that offers a 100% guarantee of seeing whales (or you get your money back, or the first available tickets on the next tour heading out). While sperm whales are most commonly spotted during the summer months, other species that may be seen include orcas and pilot whales. Winter trips are available, too, and that's when you're most likely to see humpbacks. The boats the company uses are large and have wide-open decks, perfect for setting up photo equipment or just scouting for flukes breaking the water's surface. Kids of all ages are welcome. Rates are $128 per adult, $93 for kids ages 5-13, $58 for kids ages 1-4 and free for kids under 1 year.

6. Sleep in a Lavvu with a Glass Roof Near the Northernmost Tip of Europe

If your kids like camping, they'll love the elevated experience of sleeping in a glass-roof lavvu (a spin on a traditional Sami tent) with The North Cape Experience , a family-run operation near North Cape. After touring the visitor center and snapping the obligatory family holiday photo at the globe sculpture at the northernmost point in mainland Europe, head to The North Cape Experience to sleep surrounded by fjord views and wide-open nature and partake in activities like fishing and hiking. Your kids can play like the local children do, scouting for critters along the foreshore of the fjord and daring to take a dip into the icy cold waters. Nightly lavvu rates from around $235 for a family of four.

7. Visit an Igloo Hotel Made Entirely of Ice and Snow

There are several places in the world where you can visit and sleep inside ice hotels. To me, the Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel near Alta in Northern Norway is particularly beautiful (it's also the northernmost ice hotel in the world, in case you want to tick that box). Each year, the hotel is rebuilt from the ground up with ice and snow from nearby lakes and rivers and stays open from the beginning of January to the beginning of April. If you want to sleep in a room carved entirely from ice and atop a bed of ice covered with reindeer skins, you'll be happy to know it's not as cold as it sounds. You'll be provided with a sleeping bag for extreme temperatures that will keep you warm. That said, it's an activity that's best suited for older kids rather than your toddlers. You can also visit the restaurant for a delicious meal (of reindeer, of course, or local fish) and tour the igloo hotel, with a stop at the ice bar inside for drinks served in cups made of ice. Igloo hotel admission for visitors: $24 per person, $6 for kids ages 3-12 and free for kids under 3.

8. Let Them Mush on a Dogsledding Tour

The chance to mush Alaskan huskies on a rollicking ride through the winter wonderlands of Northern Norway is sure to make the children forget about their tablets and phones for a spell. Until you've felt the sheer joy of flying along behind a team of sled dogs, it's hard to explain just how exhilarating it is. I have two favorite spots, both in Alta. Trasti og Trine is a sweet little spot where the man of the house heads up an incredible kitchen that dishes out local foods with gourmet preparations (definitely plan a meal here — creamy fish soup, perhaps — after you head out dog sledding). Dog sledding tours start at $175 person/$88 for kids under 12. Holmen Husky Lodge is the place to go for kennel visits ($41 per person, $24 for kids under 12) during the summer months for hourlong dog sledding adventures best enjoyed during the month of March, when temperatures have warmed up a bit in the Arctic and the light is pure magic.

Holmen Husky Lodge, Norway

9. Take a King Crab Safari

King crabs are an invasive species in the Arctic waters off Northern Norway, so families can help do their part to reduce the population by feasting on their succulent meat as often as possible. Make an adventure of your meal by heading out on a king crab safari around the North Cape, offered by 71 Nord during the summer and winter months in the beautiful fishing village of Honningsvåg. The 3.5-hour excursions take you aboard 12-person rib boats to pull up the king crab pots and inspect the catch (the crabs can have a claw-span of over 6 feet!). Rates: $183 per person, half off for kids under 12.

Bottom Line

While not a destination for a budget vacation with the family, Norway beckons with inexpensive flights (don't miss Scandinavian Airlines' Kids Fly Free and Norwegian's low-cost fare!) and national perks like free camping almost anywhere at wild sites. For the family trip of a lifetime or for people who love the outdoors, there's quite simply no place like Norway. Trust us, it's worth the splurge.

Transfer to Hafslo, Bike, and Boat

Enjoy your delicious breakfast with a lot of homemade products made with ingredients from the ecological garden at 292 Aurland.

Drive 1.5 hours from Aurland to Hafslo and drop your luggage at Bestebakken Resort. The view along the lake is fantastic, and the opportunity to see deer and eagles are relatively high during the ride. The lake itself is clear blue in springtime and changes to emerald-green during the summer, as the glacier melts into the lake. This road is very well known for the botanical diversity at the roadsides, with certain species of orchids not found anywhere else.

When you arrive Tungestolen, we recommend you buy lunch here, before you start on your way back to Veitastrond (8 km) where you will meet our guide in the RiB boat that will take you along the glacier lake back to Hafslo. Kayak and Glacier Walk on Styggevatnet Lake

This morning, your driver will pick you up at the hotel and drive to Jostedal, about 1 hour drive through a very scenic mountain valley along a mighty glacier river. Today you will explore how to kayak at a glacier lake (which is frozen 8 months a year). Styggevatnet (1,200m above sea level) is covered by snow from winter until early to mid-July.

The adventure begins as we kayak over the lake and hike atop the Austdalsbreen glacier! Starting at Styggevatnet, Jostedal, it is about one and a half hours paddling over to Austdalsbreen (glacier) with its 30m-high icefront that calves towers of ice into the lake. On the way, we’ll look for icebergs that have calved off the glacier in the days before. We'll stop for a packed lunch once we get to the glacier, enjoying the view across the front of the calving glacier.

Start the glacier hike on the blue ice at the glacier front, walking around huge crevasses toward the center of the glacier for a commanding view over the lake and the Jostedalsbreen National Park. We’ll spend about one and a half to two hours on the glacier, exploring and explaining various features of this natural marvel. After the glacier tour, we'll walk back to the kayaks for our return to "civilization." Transfer to your hotel.

Enjoy a three-course dinner at Bestebakken in the evening.

When is the best time to visit Norway?

The best time to visit Norway largely depends on your personal preferences and the specific experiences you seek. Norway offers distinct seasons, each with its own unique charm. Here's a breakdown of the different seasons and what they have to offer:

Summer (June to August): Summer is the most popular time to visit Norway, especially for outdoor activities and exploring the fjords. The weather is relatively mild, with long daylight hours and temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F) in most regions. This is an ideal time for hiking, fishing, kayaking, and enjoying the vibrant festivals and events that take place during this season.

Fall (September to November): Fall in Norway is a season of breathtaking beauty as the foliage transforms into a vivid display of red, orange, and gold hues. The weather gradually becomes cooler, and you may experience some rain. This is a great time for hiking, wildlife spotting, and exploring the charming cities and towns at a slower pace. It's also the season for mushroom foraging and enjoying local harvest festivals.

Winter (December to February): Winter is a magical time to visit Norway, especially for winter sports enthusiasts and those seeking the enchantment of the Northern Lights. The country transforms into a winter wonderland, with snowy landscapes and opportunities for skiing, snowboarding, dog sledding, and snowshoeing. The northern parts of Norway, such as Tromsø and Svalbard, offer the best chances to witness the mesmerizing Aurora Borealis.

Spring (March to May): Spring brings a sense of renewal to Norway as the snow starts to melt, and nature awakens from its winter slumber. The days become longer, and temperatures begin to rise, although it can still be chilly. This is a great time to witness the blossoming of wildflowers, spot migrating birds, and enjoy the tranquility of the fjords before the peak tourist season begins.

It's important to note that weather patterns can vary throughout the country, so it's always advisable to check the specific regions you plan to visit. Additionally, popular tourist destinations can be more crowded during the summer months, while the winter season may offer a more serene and secluded experience.

Ultimately, the best time to visit Norway depends on your interests, whether you long for summer adventures, winter magic, or the colorful transition of seasons. Each season has its own allure, and Norway's natural beauty shines year-round.

Will I need a visa to travel to Norway?

Whether you will need a visa to travel to Norway depends on your nationality and the purpose and duration of your visit. Norway is a member of the Schengen Area, which is a group of European countries that have abolished internal border controls, allowing for free movement of people within the area.

If you are a citizen of a country that is a member of the European Union (EU) or the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), such as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, or a Schengen Agreement signatory country, you do not need a visa to enter Norway. You can travel to Norway using a valid passport or national ID card and stay for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

If you are a citizen of a country that is not part of the EU, EFTA, or a Schengen Agreement signatory country, you may need to apply for a Schengen visa before traveling to Norway. The visa allows you to enter and stay in the Schengen Area, including Norway, for a specific duration and purpose, such as tourism, business, or visiting family or friends. The requirements and application process for a Schengen visa vary depending on your country of residence, so it is advisable to consult with the nearest Norwegian embassy or consulate for accurate and up-to-date information.

It's essential to check the visa requirements well in advance of your planned travel dates to ensure you have the necessary documentation in order. Additionally, make sure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended departure date from Norway.

Please note that visa regulations can change, so it's always recommended to verify the current visa requirements for your specific citizenship and travel circumstances before planning your trip to Norway.

What is the local currency in Norway, and can I use credit cards?

The local currency in Norway is the Norwegian Krone (NOK). It is advisable to have some Norwegian Krone with you for small purchases or places that may not accept credit cards. Currency exchange services are available at airports, banks, and exchange offices throughout the country.

Credit cards are widely accepted in Norway, and you can use them for most transactions, including hotels, restaurants, shops, and attractions. International credit cards such as Visa and Mastercard are commonly used. Some establishments may also accept other major credit cards, but it's always a good idea to carry a backup card or have some cash on hand, especially when traveling to remote areas or smaller establishments.

Norway is known for its advanced payment systems, and contactless payments via mobile apps or smart devices are popular and widely accepted. Services like Apple Pay, Google Pay, and various banking apps are commonly used for payments.

It's important to notify your credit card company or bank before traveling to Norway to ensure that your cards will work abroad and to avoid any potential issues with international transactions.

ATMs (automated teller machines) are readily available in cities and towns throughout Norway, allowing you to withdraw Norwegian Krone using your debit or credit card. Keep in mind that there may be ATM fees or currency conversion charges, so it's a good idea to check with your bank regarding any associated costs.

Overall, Norway is a modern and well-connected country when it comes to payment options, and you should have no trouble using credit cards or accessing local currency during your visit.

Political Stability: Norway is known for its political stability and well-functioning democratic institutions. This provides a secure environment for residents and visitors alike.

Safe Cities: Norwegian cities, including Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, and Stavanger, are generally safe to explore. Public spaces, public transportation, and tourist areas are well-maintained and monitored, adding to the overall sense of security.

Will I require any vaccinations to travel to Norway?

No specific vaccinations are required for travelers visiting Norway. The country does not have any widespread infectious diseases that necessitate mandatory vaccinations for entry. However, it is always advisable to ensure that your routine vaccinations are up to date before traveling to any destination.

It is also recommended to consult with a healthcare professional or travel health clinic well in advance of your trip to discuss any additional vaccinations or preventive measures that may be recommended based on your individual health status and travel plans. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific needs and the activities you plan to engage in during your visit to Norway.

Additionally, it is important to note that health and safety guidelines can change, so it is advisable to check the latest information from reputable sources such as the World Health Organization (WHO) or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) before your trip. They can provide up-to-date information regarding any specific health concerns or vaccination recommendations for travelers to Norway.

Remember to also take standard precautions to maintain good hygiene during your trip, such as practicing regular handwashing, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, and following any local health guidelines or recommendations.

How does the rooming work on tours?

Small group tours in Norway typically involve a set itinerary where you travel with a group of fellow travellers and a tour leader/guide. Accommodation arrangements  vary depending on the specific tour you choose. Here are some common aspects of rooming arrangements on small group tours:

Shared Rooms: In order to promote camaraderie and facilitate interaction among group members, most tours arrange shared accommodation. This means you will be paired with another member of the same gender from the group to share a room. Roommates may sometimes change periodically throughout the tour.

Single Supplement: If you prefer to have your own room and privacy, you may have the option to pay a single supplement fee. This additional fee allows you to have your own room for the duration of the tour. However, please note that single supplements can vary in cost and availability.

Roommate Matching: Tour operators usually offer roommate matching services, where they try to pair you with a suitable roommate based on your preferences, such as age range. This can help ensure compatibility and a more enjoyable experience for all participants.

Rooming Preferences: When booking your small group tour, it's important to communicate your rooming preferences to the tour operator. If you have specific requirements or preferences, such as sharing with a friend or a specific roommate request, it's advisable to inform the tour operator during the booking process.

It's important to carefully read the tour details and inclusions provided by the tour operator to understand their specific rooming policies. If having your own room is a priority, make sure to inquire about the availability of single supplements and any associated costs before booking your tour.

Keep in mind that while sharing a room with a fellow traveller can be a great way to meet new people and build connections, having your own room provides more privacy and flexibility. Consider your preferences and the dynamics of the tour when deciding whether to opt for a shared room or pay for a single supplement.

Remember to communicate your needs and preferences clearly with the tour operator during the booking process to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable accommodation experience on your small group tour in Norway.

What is the food like in Norway?

Norwegian cuisine is diverse and influenced by its coastal geography, abundant seafood, and traditional farming practices. Here are some highlights of Norwegian food:

Seafood: Given its extensive coastline, seafood plays a prominent role in Norwegian cuisine. Fresh and flavorful fish such as salmon, cod, herring, and trout are commonly enjoyed. Traditional dishes like lutefisk (dried fish soaked in lye) and rakfisk (fermented fish) are also part of Norwegian culinary heritage.

Smoked and Cured Delicacies: Norway is renowned for its smoked and cured products, including smoked salmon, gravlax (cured salmon), rakfisk, and smoked mackerel. These delicacies are often served with mustard sauce, dill, or on traditional flatbread called lefse.

Lamb and Game: Norwegian lamb and game, such as reindeer, elk, and venison, are prized meats. They are often used in hearty stews, sausages, or served as steaks. Reindeer meat, in particular, is a delicacy often found in northern regions of Norway.

Traditional Stews and Soups: Traditional Norwegian stews and soups are popular comfort foods. Fårikål, a lamb and cabbage stew, is considered the national dish. Other favorites include raspeballer (potato dumplings) served with bacon, sausage, and lingonberry jam, as well as fish soups like fiskesuppe and bacalao (salted cod stew).

Rømmegrøt: Rømmegrøt is a traditional Norwegian porridge made from sour cream, butter, and flour. It has a creamy texture and is often served with sugar, cinnamon, and butter.

Berries and Foraged Ingredients: Norway's pristine nature offers a variety of berries, including lingonberries, cloudberries, and bilberries. These berries are used in desserts, jams, and sauces. Foraged ingredients like mushrooms and wild herbs also make their way into Norwegian cuisine, adding unique flavors to dishes.

Bread and Pastries: Bread is a staple in Norwegian cuisine, with a variety of traditional bread types available. Norwegian pastries such as skillingsboller (cinnamon buns), krumkake (thin waffle-like cookies), and solboller (sweet buns filled with cream and jam) are popular treats.

Brunost: Brunost, or brown cheese, is a distinct Norwegian cheese made from caramelized whey. It has a sweet and slightly tangy flavor and is often eaten on bread or waffles.

Norwegian food reflects a balance of traditional, rustic flavors and modern influences. When visiting Norway, be sure to explore local markets, seafood restaurants, and traditional eateries to savor the country's culinary delights.

Can I drink the tap water in Norway?

Yes, tap water in Norway is generally safe to drink. The water quality in Norway is of high standards, and tap water undergoes rigorous testing to ensure its safety for consumption. The water supply is well-maintained and regularly monitored by local authorities.

In cities, towns, and most rural areas, tap water is considered safe and potable. You can confidently drink tap water from the faucets in hotels, restaurants, and private accommodations. Many Norwegians themselves prefer tap water over bottled water due to its quality and environmental sustainability.

However, it's worth noting that in some remote or rural areas, particularly those served by private wells or small water systems, the water quality might vary. In such cases, it's advisable to inquire locally about the quality of tap water and follow any recommendations or precautions given by the residents or accommodation providers.

If you prefer bottled water, it is widely available for purchase in supermarkets, convenience stores, and other retail outlets throughout the country. However, keep in mind that opting for tap water helps reduce plastic waste and is an environmentally friendly choice.

Overall, tap water in Norway is safe for drinking, and you can enjoy the convenience and quality of the local water supply during your visit.

Are there any cultural norms in Norway I should follow?

Yes, while visiting Norway, it is helpful to be aware of and respect the cultural norms and customs of the country. Here are some key cultural norms in Norway:

Punctuality: Norwegians value punctuality and appreciate it when others are on time for meetings, appointments, or social gatherings. It's considered polite to arrive at the designated time or inform the host if you anticipate being delayed.

Personal Space and Privacy: Norwegians generally value their personal space and privacy. It is customary to maintain a respectful distance during conversations and interactions. Avoid intrusive personal questions unless the topic is brought up willingly by your Norwegian counterparts.

Equality and Informality: Norway is known for its egalitarian society, and social equality is highly valued. Addressing people by their first names, regardless of their age or position, is common practice. Norwegians tend to have a more informal and egalitarian approach to communication and interactions.

Nature and Outdoor Respect: Norwegians have a deep appreciation for their natural environment, and it is important to respect the pristine landscapes. Take care to follow established trails, avoid littering, and adhere to any guidelines or restrictions in protected areas. Show consideration for wildlife and adhere to local regulations when engaging in outdoor activities.

Sustainability and Environmental Consciousness: Norwegians have a strong commitment to environmental sustainability. Recycling is widely practiced, and it is appreciated when visitors follow suit. Consider using reusable items, minimizing waste, and being mindful of energy consumption during your stay.

Tipping: While service charges are often included in bills, it is customary to round up the bill or leave a small tip as a gesture of appreciation for good service. However, tipping is not obligatory, and it's ultimately at your discretion.

Queuing and Respect for Others: Norwegians value orderly queues and expect individuals to wait their turn in public places, such as transportation, ticket counters, or shops. Respecting others' personal space and being considerate in public settings is highly appreciated.

Remember that cultural norms can vary among individuals, and Norwegians are generally understanding of cultural differences. If in doubt about a specific situation, observing the locals and following their lead is a good approach.

By being respectful, open-minded, and embracing the local customs, you can have a more enriching and enjoyable experience while visiting Norway.

What should I pack for a trip to Norway?

When packing for a trip to Norway, it's important to consider the season, weather conditions, and the activities you plan to engage in. Here are some essential items to pack for a trip to Norway:

  • Layered clothing: Norway's weather can be changeable, so it's best to pack lightweight, breathable layers that you can easily add or remove as needed.
  • Waterproof and windproof jacket: A waterproof and windproof jacket is essential, particularly if you plan to spend time outdoors or visit coastal areas.
  • Warm sweaters or fleeces: Pack warm sweaters or fleeces for cooler temperatures, especially if you're traveling in the colder months or visiting higher elevations.
  • Comfortable walking shoes: Norway offers stunning landscapes and opportunities for hiking, so pack comfortable, sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots.

  • Hat, gloves, and scarf: These items are essential for protecting yourself from cold temperatures, particularly in the winter months.
  • Swimwear: If you're visiting during the summer or plan to visit the coastal areas or fjords, pack swimwear for swimming or enjoying hot tubs and saunas.

Outdoor Gear:

  • Daypack or backpack: A daypack or backpack is handy for carrying essentials, water, snacks, and extra layers during outdoor activities.
  • Hiking gear: If you plan to hike, pack appropriate gear such as a sturdy backpack, water bottle, hiking poles, and a good pair of hiking socks.
  • Outdoor accessories: Consider packing a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a reusable water bottle.

Travel Essentials:

  • Travel documents: Don't forget to bring your passport, travel insurance information, and any necessary visas or identification documents.
  • Money and cards: Carry some Norwegian currency (Norwegian Krone) for smaller purchases, and also have a credit/debit card for larger expenses. Norway is generally a cashless society, and cards are widely accepted.
  • Travel guidebook or maps: A travel guidebook or maps can be helpful for exploring cities, finding attractions, and navigating the countryside.

Remember to check the weather forecast for your specific travel dates and destinations in Norway to help you pack accordingly. It's also a good idea to pack versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched to suit different weather conditions and activities.

Lastly, pack light and only bring what you need to ensure your comfort and convenience during your trip to Norway.

Bergen is a truly beautiful little city. Surrounded by seven mountains, seven fjords, pine forests and icy waters. Colourful houses form the UNESCO heritage site of Bryggen Hanseatic Wharf with restaurants, galleries and some of Norway's best restaurants.

The Lofoten Islands

Distinctive scenery, exposed to the open seas and scattered with fishing villages - not only are the Lofton islands characteristically beautiful, there’s also plenty to do. One of Norway’s premier wildlife areas; search for puffins, cormorants, otters and moose.

So many of Norway’s highlights are on its massive expanse of winding coastline; Islands, fjords, glaciers, fishing villages and port towns. Not only are Norwegian Cruises an exciting way to take in the scenery, they’re the perfect way to navigate the country.

Scenic Norway

Found the guide to be very organized, on schedule and knowledgeable. He worked hard keeping everyone happy. I don’t see how anyone could of done better. The hotels were overall pretty good. Food fantastic. Driver very good too. Only thing I would recommend is that two of the front seats be kept empty for handicap, sick or people with motion sickness. I suffer from that and didn’t realize until third day and by then people were on seat rotation and didn’t want to create a scene because I needed front seat but if it were empty I could of moved there. Otherwise I have no complaints.

I enjoyed the days in Norway. It is a fast paced itinerary but you never get bored at one place. Despite the pace I had quite some hours at each place where we stopped and hiked around. The trip definition matched my expectations. My travel fellows are quite diverse in terms of culture background and age. I think intrepid did a good job to make a satisfying tour for such a diverse group.

Under the Northern Lights: Arctic Dreams Norway

Thoroughly enjoyed the tour. Tromso area was beautiful and pre-arranged tours were very good. Hotel was OK. Night in Camp Tamok and the activities there were great. We had a break in our Hotel Stay in order to stay in a glamping pod for one night - the tour itinerary stated : morning activity, Pack and store luggage, then collected for the night away. In reality we had to pack and store our luggage before the morning activity which meant that after we finished we had 4 hours with no access to an hotel room. Had it been arranged for us to retain the hotel room for a couple of hours after normal check-out time, that would have been more convenient. Having seen the advertised prices of the individual activities and accommodation, i think the tour package was expensive.

Walking the Fjords

I wasn't sure this was the right trip for me because I am an inactive person and it was listed as a moderate level tour. However, I found out I was able to hike 620 meters in a day, walk over 8 miles, and for over 7 hours. I met the guide at the airport and everything was taken care of until the last day of the tour. I did not join the group transfer on the return trip home as my flight was not until the next day. I was able to take the "FlyBus" two blocks away from the hotel back to the airport at 4:45 a.m. without issue. Ten other hikers joined me on this tour and they were all strangers to me. Nine were women and One man. Ages ranged from 35-71 on our tour. I could not have been more pleased with my fellow travelers and I enjoyed spending my time with each one of them. Eight were from the UK, Two from USA, and One from Canada. This was my first hiking trip with no previous hiking experience. All of the other travelers were experienced and I received help and tips from the others from how to wear my back pack to how to use the hiking poles. One mistake I could not overcome was not having the right sized hiking boots and I paid the price for that. My toes were bruised, I had blisters, and my ankles and feet were swollen the entire time, but I pressed on regardless. The weather in this part of Norway has a lot of rain in June, but luckily we enjoyed practically the entire week without much rain to interfere. Therefore we were able to successfully proceed with the entire itinerary only to switch a couple days around due to rain and hiking conditions on the trail. The itinerary was well planned from travel days and completely filling our hiking days. Usually we had breakfast at 7:45, left our base camp by 8:45 and returned around 5 pm each day. Dinner was at 7 pm. Each hike had different types of hiking trails, difficulty, and scenery to take in. None of it was disappointing. We traveled by mini bus each day, which was comfortable and our guide drove us very safely around the region. Thon Hotel Orion was a comfortable tourist hotel with an excellent breakfast buffet. It was located along the water in the heart of Bergen. I cannot say enough good things about Nes Gard Guesthouse along Lustrafjord. The scenery is breathtaking. The rooms are cozy and the beds are comfortable. There are no televisions, but apparently the do have wi-fi access. The owner of the guesthouse and staff are personable and sincerely want you to have a pleasant stay. I am a vegetarian and I had thoughtful meals. Others had food allergies or preferences and everyone was accommodated with personal attention. The breakfast buffet and packed lunches were standard. I only had a cheese sandwich, soft-boiled egg and banana/apple for my packed lunches every day. The dinners were fantastic 3 course meals. My compliments to the chef as I thoroughly enjoyed the menu, quality of food, and taste every day. Our tour guide was a modest, down to earth gentleman. He was quiet by nature, but is experienced, attentive, and a genuine human being. All of the travelers seemed to really appreciate his personality, expertise, and his good nature. He offered assistance on the trail if you needed it, did not want to put anyone at risk of getting hurt, carried coffee and tea every hiking day for lunch, drove safely and thoughtfully, and seemed very proud of his country. He seemed to enjoy being on the trails and was very comfortable showing us around. He is a really great person and I was very appreciative of him. Overall, I had a very successful tour and it exceeded my expectations. I would recommend this tour, would do it again, and found new friends. I also found a new love of hiking.

Visit Fjords in Golden Autumn

This tour was something new for my family (4 pers). Norway? Package tour? Alesund? So small town, maybe it will be boring? We ask these questions again and again. However, we were lucky to choose this tour with rather rich tour program.Hotel was in downtown, with walking distance to all restaurants, cafe, shops, harbor, bus station etc. Our tour leader Radmyla met us in the airport and delivered to the hotel, and whole week we could communicate with her when we needed it. She was very helpful, smart and kind, and her wise advice saved our money. In addition, we bought 2 excursions more - fishing tour and tour to Trolls country. I would recommend to do it to everybody who take this tour. Our kids (7 and 11) were happy with all excursions and possibilities to meet local people and Norwegian kids. Good experience for them!

A vacation to Norway has lots to please the whole family — it offers the best of urban exploration as well as spectacular scenery. The vibrant, diverse city of Oslo is full of kid-friendly activities, and the countryside truly impresses everyone, from fussy toddlers to jaded teens. In the pleasant summer months, hiking the glaciers or cruising the fjords is popular. The more extreme winter weather brings with it the chance to see the Northern Lights, go dogsledding and snowshoeing, and even try your hand at ice fishing. The kid-friendly accommodation list is as long as the list of things to do; we love pairing a luxury hotel in Oslo with experience-oriented properties in the northern regions, like a working husky lodge.

Adventures for families

Cold winters with plenty of snow and mild summers with long nights make Norway and exciting family destination all year round. Exploring stunning national parks with high mountains, admiring UNESCO listed fjords or venturing on ancient glaciers are only a few of the amazing family adventures waiting for you in Norway.

A train ride and cycle along the historic Rallarvegen line

Rallarvegen is Norway ‘s most popular cycle route. Leading through mountainous scenery it stretches over 82 km passing natural and historical monuments. Rallarvegen was originally built as a service road to deliver construction materials to the Bergenline - the railroad track between Oslo and Bergen which now runs parallel to the cycle route. Hence Rallarvegen is ideal to combine cycling and a relaxing train trip through Norway ‘‘s beautiful mountains. Besides it is like an open air museum with listed buildings all along the way containing information of when they were built. Whilst the whole distance of Rallarvegen can be cycled in one day it is worth taking an overnight stay to really take in the nature and magnificent surroundings.

A paradise for Alpine skiing

Norway ‘ is a paradise for alpine skiing. With skiing resorts of around 2000m in altitude Norway ‘ is a winter sport destination all year around. But it is not just about being active in the snow, each slope is unique and guarantees - besides the physical challenge - amazing natural highlights such as views of the impressive Norwegian fjords and the fascinating Northern lights. Even for Olympic champions Norway ‘ is a special destination with some of the most extraordinary conditions in the world. After Easter usually marks the end of the busy skiing season and the beginning of the relaxing-in-the-sun-and-enjoy-a-cold-beer season. Fun for winter sport enthusiasts and sunbathers alike!

Fun-sledding at the iconic Holmenkollen

Holmenkollen in Norway ‘ is famous for its huge ski jump which was first  used in 1892. It started off as a natural hill with a take-off ramp made of snow and twigs. Holmenkollen as you can see it today was then built in the 1900s when the sport become more popular. If you are interested in its history you can visit the nearby Holmenkollen Ski Museum, the oldest of its kind in the world. If you prefer to get active yourself, plan for a sledding adventure in Korketrekkeren near Holmenkollen. It is Oslo‘s most popular sled run and winds down over 2km like a “cork screw“. An adventure in the snow for the whole family!

Family Rafting and canyoning in rugged landscape of Westner Norway

Right between Oslo and Bergen Dagali Fjeldpark is a nature lover's paradise, offering year-round outdoor adventures amid the stunning landscapes in the heart of Norway . Whether you're seeking thrills or simply want to unwind in nature, this park has something to offer for everyone. You can go family rafting navigating down the calm and scenic stretches of the Numedalslågen River or go canyoning, an exhilarating adventure where you'll navigate through narrow gorges, descend waterfalls, and explore the rugged beauty of the Norwegian wilderness. With professional guides leading the way, you'll be equipped with the necessary gear and safety measures to rappel down cliffs, swim in natural pools, and experience the thrill of exploring canyons carved by nature over millennia.

Visit a  Reindeer Farm near Bodø

Visiting a reindeer farm in Northern Norway offers a unique and immersive experience that allows you to connect with indigenous Sami culture and learn about the fascinating world of reindeer herding. You'll likely be greeted with warm hospitality by the Sami hosts, who will provide insights into their traditional way of life. You'll have the opportunity to get up close to the reindeer, feed them, and even pet them. The Sami hosts will share their knowledge about reindeer herding techniques, the role of reindeer in their culture, and the challenges they face in preserving this way of life. As well you can gain insights into Sami traditions and customs, including their distinctive clothing, handicrafts, and joik (traditional songs). You might even get the chance to participate in traditional activities or taste Sami cuisine. This is not only an educational experience but also a chance to connect with nature and appreciate indigenous traditions
