CommBank offers a decent range of travel insurance policies at a good price point. It has multiple options to tailor cover, so you can create a policy which matches most of your needs, including expensive items, riskier holiday activities, and pre-existing medical conditions.

However, it doesn't offer any cover for cancellations, amendments, or general expenses related to COVID-1, other than medical. Older travellers are also excluded, with an age limit of 69 - significantly lower than many other providers in the market.

How long do I have to make a travel insurance claim?

You have 60 days from your return date to submit your travel insurance claim. If you're still waiting on documentation to support your claim but worried you won't make the deadline, you can start the process and submit the additional documentation later.

Can I take out a policy with CommBank if I'm already overseas?

If you are a non-Australian resident travelling to Australia, you can take out Commbank's Inbound policy while overseas. However, Australian residents can't get travel insurance from CommBank while overseas. For other options, you can read our guide on Travel insurance for Australians already overseas .

I am 80 and would like to travel to Mauritius. Does the Commonwealth Credit Card or Visa cover me for travelling to Mauritius. I noticed that Westpac age is up to 81 for travel insurance

There are several conditions and restrictions that apply to people aged 80 or over when considering credit card insurance through CommBank. These may include no cover for overseas emergency medical expenses or assistance.

You can find the full details of what you are and are not covered for by reviewing the Product Disclosure Statement on CommBank’s website.

For more travel insurance options, please have a look at our Travel insurance for seniors over 80s page.

Is it possible to add two adult children on insurance included with eligible CBA credit cards?

Avatar

Thank you for getting in touch with finder.

Yes that is possible. As long as they are unmarried children, from 19 years of age up to and including 21 years of age, who are full-time students attending an accredited institution of higher learning in Australia and who the cardholder has/had sole or shared custody, and who are dependent upon the cardholder for their maintenance and financial support then they can be covered.

I suggest that you also check Commbank credit card travel insurance PDS or contact Commbank directly on this matter.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any other enquiries.

Thank you and have a wonderful day!

Cheers, Jeni

I have a gold credit card and are entitled to travel insurance for an overseas trip.Going to Canada and Alaska in June this year: is a 8day cruise included in the insurance? Thanks for your prompt replay. Ursula

Avatar

Thanks for your question.

Yes, the complimentary travel insurance covers cruising. But if you want to include the benefits provided in the Cruise Pack (which is detailed in the PDS I sent to your email), you will need to upgrade your policy, this is in addition, to cover provided in the Base International Travel Insurance and Activated Policy for cruising. Please contact Allianz Australia Insurance to upgrade.

Cheers, May

finder.com.au is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stands by our editorial principles

We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.

Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.

How we make money

We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.

Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.

Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product. You can learn more about how we make money .

Sorting and Ranking Products

When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. We provide tools so you can sort and filter these lists to highlight features that matter to you.

More about Commonwealth Bank travel insurance

What travel insurance policies does commonwealth bank offer.

Commonwealth Bank offers several travel insurance policies, both standalone and complimentary with their range of credit cards. These include:

  • Comprehensive: for you and up to ten named travel companions, this comprehensive policy covers you for international medical, lost baggage and cancellation. This policy is available for both single and multiple visits, both inside Australia and abroad.
  • Essentials: a basic insurance policy which covers you and up to ten others for international medical and other expenses. This policy, which includes cancellation coverage, is only available for single trips to and from Australia and other countries.
  • Medical-Only: this policy only covers emergency medical costs, excluding pre-existing conditions, and some dental treatment for you and up to ten other named policyholders.
  • Cancellation-Only: available only for single trips abroad, this policy covers you purely for cancellation of your trip due to a covered incident.
  • Inbound Australia: if you’re a non-resident travelling outside of Australia, this inbound travel insurance policy will cover you for overseas medical expenses, hospital incidentals, cancellation and personal liability.
  • Non-Medical: if you want to go without coverage for any medical expenses while you’re overseas, this CBA policy provides you with limited coverage for cancellation, loss or damage to your luggage and additional expenses.
  • Annual Multi-Trip: if you go on several trips each year, CBA offers an annual multi-trip policy for frequent flyers. This provides cover for an unlimited number of trips, so long as they’re 250km away from your house. Your holiday must also include at least one night’s paid accommodation (such as a hotel, bed and breakfast, serviced apartment or Airbnb) if you’re travelling closer than that.

Before you buy your travel insurance, it’s important to compare your options with Savvy to make sure the policy you’re choosing is the one best suited to your trip, no matter whether you’re travelling to Sri Lanka or Sydney.

What optional extras are available through Commonwealth Bank?

CBA makes a few optional extras available to its travel insurance customers, including:

  • Cruise cover: this add-on is available with CBA’s comprehensive, essential and medical-only policies at an extra cost. This cruise pack covers you if you need medical treatment abroad the ocean liner or need ship-to-shore evacuation. You’re also covered for emergency dental work, loss of damaged formal wear and cabin confinement.
  • Snow sports cover: heading over to Switzerland or Falls Creek to carve up the slopes? CBA offers snow sports cover for those wanting to take part in some recreational skiing, snowboarding and tobogganing. This optional extra is available on CBA’s comprehensive, essential, medical-only and inbound policies and doesn’t cover you for racing.
  • Adventure activities cover: CBA’s optional adventure activities plan covers you for bungy jumping, scuba diving, white water rafting, horse riding and jet boating while on your holiday.
  • Motorcycle/moped riding cover: planning to explore your domestic or international destination on two wheels? CBA offers this add-on for those wanting to ride a motorcycle , moped or scooter on their holiday. Some exclusions apply, including if you have an accident and you’re not wearing a helmet or holding a valid license.
  • Vehicle rental excess insurance cover: while this package is already included under CBA’s comprehensive international policy, you can add it to other policies, such as the domestic or non-medical policy, for a higher premium.

What exclusions should I be aware of when buying travel insurance through Commonwealth Bank?

Some of the general exclusions on CBA’s policies include:

  • Theft of your belongings left in a car or unattended
  • Breaking the law
  • Travelling against the advice of your doctor
  • Intentionally harming yourself or attempting suicide
  • Not obtaining relevant travel documents, such as a visa, ESTA or a valid passport
  • Travelling to a country or region against government warnings
  • Treatment for unapproved pre-existing medical conditions, such as types of diabetes

If you’ve found a travel insurance policy that draws your eye, make sure you review the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) before you set your decision in stone.

What we think of Commonwealth Bank travel insurance

What we like, complimentary with credit cards.

If you’ve got a Low Fee Gold, Low Rate Gold, Gold Awards, Platinum, Diamond Awards or Ultimate Awards credit or Visa debit card, you can get international travel insurance for free by using your card to book some pre-paid expenses.

Plenty of options

CBA gives you plenty of options when it comes to policies, with about six standalone options and a handful of optional extras to choose from.

Overseas rent cover

One of the rarer benefits CBA offers is overseas rent. This comprehensive travel insurance benefit allows you to claim up to $5, 000 if you can't return to work due to disabling injury, illness or disease.

What we don't like

Limited covid-19-related coverage.

Commonwealth Bank is one of the few travel insurance providers who don’t offer coverage cancellation or additional expenses due to COVID-19.

Reduced personal liability

CBA’s personal liability insurance is less comprehensive than some of its rivals. They offer between $1. 5 million and $2. 5 million, but other insurers offer between $5 million and $10 million.

Shorter cooling-off periods

While a 14-day cooling-off period may be ample, many other travel insurance providers offer up to 25 days if you need to cancel for any reason.

Types of travel insurance

International.

International travel insurance can offer cover for a range of events, including medical expenses, lost luggage or items, cancellation fees and more when you're overseas and a long way from home.

If you're journeying within Australia, domestic policies are designed to offer many of the same protections as international travel insurance (with the exception of medical expenses).

Single trip

The most standard and common type of travel insurance, this policy can cover you for one trip starting and ending in Australia (and is available for both international and domestic travel).

Annual multi-trip

As the name suggests, this type of travel insurance covers multiple trips over a 12-month period. Depending on your insurer, you may be able to take an unlimited number of trips up to 90 days each.

You don't have to have a return ticket booked to take out cover while you're overseas. One-way travel insurance enables you to access cover without a set end date, such as if you're moving temporarily.

You may need to take out specialist coverage if you're setting sail on a cruise. Fortunately, cruise insurance can cover emergency evacuation, cabin confinement and more.

Just because you're older doesn't mean travel insurance isn't still important. If you qualify for cover, seniors' travel insurance can offer greater peace of mind for included events while you're travelling.

Adding winter sports or ski cover to your policy can add protection against damage to your equipment, piste closure due to bad weather and activities such as back-country skiing, heliskiing and more.

Adventure sports

Looking to enjoy some adventure sports on holiday? An adventure sports pack can grant you cover for a range of activities, such as hiking, scuba diving and motorcycle or scooter riding.

Jetsetting with the whole clan in tow? Some insurers offer family travel insurance, which enables you to include yourself, your partner and your dependent children under one policy to help you save.

If you're travelling interstate or overseas with your partner (or simply another friend or family member), you may be able to access a discount by taking out a joint or duo travel insurance policy.

Frequently asked questions about Commonwealth Bank travel insurance

Making a claim through CBA is relatively straightforward as the bank allows you to do it online. If you need to make a claim, follow these steps:

  • Phone your insurance agent as soon as possible
  • Provide ample details about the claimable incident
  • Gather your supporting documents, including receipts, medical reports, valuations or proof of purchase documents
  • Submit your claim

It can take up to ten working days for CBA to process your claim. That’s why if you’re asked to clarify certain parts of your claim, it’s best to respond promptly so it doesn’t hold up the process.

There’s no one ballpark price of travel insurance , as there are several factors which affect how much you’ll pay for a policy, including:

  • Destination
  • Level of coverage
  • Optional extras you choose
  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Chosen policy excess
  • Type of insurer and insurance policy you purchase

If you get injured or fall sick while travelling and give birth, CBA will provide coverage up until the 24th week of your pregnancy. However, pregnant travellers who have had prior pregnancies with problems, are travelling for fertility treatment, or must pay for their new baby's care do not have coverage.

Unlike annual multi-trip policies, which cover many travels throughout the year, single-trip insurance only covers one trip. When it is covered by an annual multi-trip policy, like those offered by CBA, a trip can last up to 45 days. On the other hand, vacations taken without a confirmed return flight are covered by one-way travel insurance plans. These policies often allow you to select to extend your coverage for an additional year.

First, let’s look at the overall earning and redemption features of the Amex Gold card, then jump right into the list of travel insurance benefits you can expect to find on the card.

Amex Gold Card — Travel Insurance Benefits

Woman loading bag in car trunk

While the Amex Gold card doesn’t come with a long list of comprehensive travel benefits, you’ll find these core travel insurance benefits useful for saving money and for access to assistance should something go wrong during your journey.

Having car rental insurance can save you money and provide a level of peace of mind when renting a vehicle . The Amex Gold card comes with secondary car rental insurance that would require you to first file a claim with any other applicable insurance before card coverage kicks in.

Secondary coverage can still be valuable coverage, but there is another car rental coverage option included on the card that is a much better choice.

Premium Protection

The option to purchase Premium Protection car rental insurance on the Amex Gold card is a game changer.

You’ll pay one low price of $12.25 to $24.95 for the entire period, up to 42 total days, for primary theft and damage coverage. The actual rate will depend on your state of residence and the level of coverage chosen. Note that this is not a per-day rate like the car rental agencies charge.

Just enroll in the coverage via your online card account, then whenever you charge your rental car to your card, you’ll have the coverage automatically. You are not charged prior to renting a car.

There is no deductible. Accidental death/dismemberment coverage is included. Liability coverage, uninsured/under-insured motorist coverage, or disability coverage is not included.

Cardholders and authorized listed drivers are covered.

Applicable coverages for both secondary and Premium Protection include rental car damage, theft, and loss of use.

Coverage is not available when renting vehicles in Australia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, and New Zealand.

There are several additional exclusions, including the theft of an unlocked vehicle, illegal activity, intoxication of the driver, and war. Access the Guide to Benefits for a complete list of exclusions, terms, and conditions.

Filing a Claim

You can file a claim online or call 800-338-1670. You must file the claim within 30 days of the event and submit the required claim form within an additional 15 days. You’ll then have 60 days to submit the required documentation.

Bottom Line: The Amex Gold card comes with secondary car rental insurance with the option to purchase primary Premium Protection for one low rate that covers the entire rental period.

United flight delay

To be eligible for trip delay insurance, you must pay for your entire trip with your Amex Gold card, associated rewards, or a combination of the 2. Using airline vouchers, certificates, or discounts, such as those associated with your frequent flyer account, in combination with your card, are also acceptable. Eligible travelers include family members, travel companions, and a spouse or domestic partner.

Trip delay insurance reimburses an eligible traveler for incidental expenses incurred after a 12-hour or greater trip delay. Eligible expenses can include lodging, meals, toiletries, medication, and necessary personal items.

Eligible Losses and Coverage Limits

The following types of losses are eligible covered losses :

  • Inclement weather preventing a traveler from beginning a trip or continuing on a trip
  • Terrorism or hijacking
  • A common carrier’s equipment failure (documented)
  • Lost/stolen travel documents, such as passports

You could receive up to $300 per trip with a limit of 2 claims per card, per 12-month period. Coverage is secondary to any other applicable coverage including reimbursement by the airline.

Loss exclusions include prepaid expenses, losses that were known to the public or the traveler prior to the trip, and intentional acts by the covered traveler. Access the card’s  Guide to Benefits for more details on loss exclusions under trip delay coverage.

You’ll have 60 days from the date of the loss to file a claim. You can do so by calling 844-933-0648 or the number on the back of your card to be directed to the claims department.

You’ll then have 180 days to submit the required documentation, which can include a statement from the common carrier validating the delay, receipts, your card statement showing the trip charge, and other requested supporting information.

Bottom Line: The Amex Gold card comes with trip delay insurance that provides up to $300 per trip for eligible expenses incurred after a 12-hour or greater delay due to a covered loss.

Airport baggage claim

To be eligible for baggage insurance, pay for your common carrier ticket entirely with your Amex Gold card and/or associated rewards. Trips paid for, in full or in part, with non-American Express rewards such as airline loyalty programs are not eligible.

You, your spouse or domestic partner, children under 23, and certain dependent handicapped children are covered for baggage insurance as long as the trip is paid for in full with your card and/or associated rewards.

Lost, damaged, or stolen baggage is covered, except in the event of war, government confiscation, or acts arising out of customer actions, for the following coverage limits.

High-risk items such as jewelry, gold, silver, platinum, electronics, furs, and sporting equipment, are limited to $250 per item maximum, per trip.

Certain items are not covered under baggage insurance — here is a condensed list of those items:

  • Credit cards, cash, securities, or money equivalents (such as money orders or gift cards)
  • Travel documents, tickets, passports, or visas
  • Plants, animals, or food
  • Glasses, contact lenses, hearing aids, prosthetic devices, and prescription or non-prescription drugs
  • Property shipped prior to departure

You’ll have 30 days from the date of the loss to file a claim. To file a claim, you can go online or call 800-228-6855 within the U.S. To call from outside of the U.S., call 303-273-6498 collect.

You’ll then have 60 days to submit supporting documentation including a list of items lost, receipts, a statement showing the trip was purchased with the card or associated rewards, and common carrier reports.

Please note that we have abbreviated coverage descriptions and all terms and conditions are not spelled out in their entirety. You’ll want to access the benefits guide for full information.

Bottom Line: You and certain family members are covered for baggage insurance of up to $1,250 per person when traveling with a common carrier. You’ll need to pay for your entire trip with your card or rewards associated with your card for coverage to be valid.

Travel accident insurance that comes with the Amex Gold card pays a benefit in the unlikely event of accidental death or dismemberment of the primary card member, additional card member, spouse or domestic partner, or children under the age of 23.

The trip must be paid for with the Amex Gold card and/or associated Membership Rewards points (Pay With Points).

The coverage pays a benefit for death or severe injury suffered as a result of riding in, boarding, exiting from, or being struck by a common carrier.

The benefit paid is based on a table provided and can be up to $100,000.

Travel Benefits

While not travel insurance specifically, these additional benefits can provide assistance when planning a trip or if an unexpected event should disrupt your trip.

The Amex Global Assist Hotline provides important 24/7 assistance when traveling more than 100 miles from home. Receive help finding medical, legal, and translation referrals as well as assistance securing emergency transportation.

In addition, you could receive help securing a replacement passport or finding missing luggage.

You can reach the Global Assist Hotline at 800-333-2639. Outside the U.S., call 715-343-7977.

Actual services provided by third parties that incur costs are the responsibility of the cardholder.

Services are also not available in areas such as Cuba, Iran, Syria, North Korea, or the Crimea region.

You’ll want to include the Amex Gold card during your next trip, as the card does not charge foreign transaction fees ( rates & fees ).

Receive help planning your trip with Insider Fares via AmexTravel.com, upgrade your flights with points , American Express Travel Insurance , onsite benefits at The Hotel Collection , Amex Offers , and more.

While the Amex Gold card comes with several valuable travel insurance benefits, you would not select the card for this specific reason. The card shines when it comes to earning on select everyday purchases, for purchasing airline tickets, and its flexible travel redemption options. Those should be key reasons for selecting the card.

The fact that there are travel insurance benefits that come complimentary with the card is just one more reason to consider the card.

If having premium travel insurance benefits is a priority for you, you might consider the Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card , The Platinum Card ® from American Express , the Chase Sapphire Reserve ® , or the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card , all of which offer some of the best travel insurance benefits.

You can read about more credit cards with travel insurance  in our article on this specific topic.

Moscow introduces a special card for tourists

Moscow introduces a special card for tourists

From December 1, Moscow guests can purchase a special tourist card, which will help them save money while visiting museums, restaurants and attractions of the capital. For Moscow, it will be the first experience. The tourist card will be named Moscow Pass.

In Russia, Moscow Pass will cost 2,400 rubles, while abroad 59.99 euros, – informs the newspaper “Vedomosty”. Card validity period is three days from the date of activation.

The list of museums, which will be free for owners of Moscow Pass, will include the Museum of World War II of 1812, the Museum of Contemporary Russian History, the Museum of Russian Icons, and the State Historical Museum. In addition, the cardholders will be offered free walking and motor-ship tours, as well as restaurant discount of 10-20% with Moscow Pass.

As the card developers report, its main task will be to participate in the program of the Moscow Government to attract tourists to the capital. It is known that in many major cities around the world such tourist cards have long existed and were successfully used. For example, this card can be bought by travelers in New York, Berlin, Prague, London, and Paris. Last year, the similar card got on sale in St. Petersburg.

Later, it is planned to expand the Moscow Pass range: according to the list of free museums and the number of discounts the cost of the card will vary. So far, the only type of tourist card are available to travelers in hotels “Baltschug Kempinski”, “National”, “Lotte Hotel”, “Ararat Park Hyatt”, “Marriott Royal Aurora” and several other well-known hotels of the capital, as well as in travel agencies and museum ticket offices.

It states:  We will not pay for claims caused by, or claims arising from, an epidemic, pandemic or outbreak of a contagious disease or any derivative or mutation of such viruses, or the threat or perceived threat of any of these. Refer to  who.int  and  smartraveller.gov.au  for further information on epidemics and pandemics.

Therefore, there’s no cover for cancellation due to concerns about coronavirus.

I already have a policy for my upcoming trip, but I want to cancel the trip now. Will my cancellation costs be covered?

We encourage you to contact your own travel agent, transport provider, accommodation or tour operator to discuss any actual or proposed changes to travel plans. Your travel provider can provide you with more information about your options for adjusting your travel itinerary or getting a refund.

If I catch coronavirus while travelling overseas and need medical treatment, what should I do?

If you’re overseas and have been directly affected by coronavirus and need medical help, please call the Cover-More 24-hour emergency assistance team immediately on +61 2 8907 5619.

COVID-19 cover under the Overseas Emergency Medical and Hospital Expenses benefit is now available on eligible CommBank cards for travellers whose journey commenced on or after 10 August 2022, or who activated their policy on or after 10 August 2022. There is no COVID-19 cover for cruise travel. Terms and conditions apply. Please refer to the PDS.

What if I’ve returned home and have to self-isolate? Is there any cover?

Once you’re back in Australia, there’s no cover under the policy. For example, this means there’s no cover for any medical expenses, out-of-pocket expenses, or loss of income once you’re back in Australia.

If, despite the Australian Government’s advice not to travel, I need to travel overseas, will my policy still cover me for medical expenses unrelated to coronavirus?

‘Overseas Medical Expenses’ and ‘Additional Expenses If You Become Sick’, as defined in your policy, are still covered, as long as they’re unrelated to coronavirus if you choose to travel overseas after the 15 March 2020 Australian Government advice.

Remember – it’s a condition of the policy that you must take all reasonable steps to prevent or minimise a claim. Claims will be assessed in accordance with your policy, taking into account the circumstances of your claim, when you purchased your policy, advice publicly available prior to your entry to a region, where you are travelling to, and the dates of your trip.

Currently overseas

The policy has a general exclusion for pandemics. Therefore, you won’t be covered for additional expenses relating to any changes to your trip.

I’m overseas and having trouble getting travel bookings to return home. Will my travel insurance policy automatically extend until I’m able to return home?

No – you’ll need to contact Cover-More to request an extension and pay any required additional premium, whether you’re genuinely stuck overseas or decide to remain overseas.

What if I’m quarantined overseas? Is there any cover for additional expenses?

The policy has a general exclusion for pandemics. Therefore, you won’t be covered for additional expenses relating to being quarantined, whether you have coronavirus or not.

However, if you’re a CBA credit or debit cardholder, the Cover-More 24-hour assistance team can support you with non-financial assistance, such as assisting with changes to travel arrangements including flights, accommodation and ground transfers. We encourage you to contact your travel agent, transport provider, accommodation or tour operator to check what they can provide under these circumstances.

If my transport is delayed or I miss a connection due to the impact of coronavirus, will you pay my claim for that?

No, there’s no cover for travel delays or missed connections because of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Claims unrelated to coronavirus

If i want to make a claim for an event unrelated to coronavirus, will there still be cover.

General Information

What is a pandemic and epidemic.

Your travel insurance product disclosure statement (PDS) ( Credit Card Insurances Product Disclosure Statement  or  World Debit Mastercard insurances Product Disclosure Statement and Information Booklet ) includes  definitions of ‘pandemic’ and ‘epidemic’ that are used for the purposes of your travel insurance policy wording.

It’s important that you refer to your PDS for any specific details about your travel insurance cover.

Is coronavirus (COVID-19) considered both an epidemic and pandemic?

Moscow and St. Petersburg present a new tourist pass

commonwealth gold card travel insurance

Russia has introduced a new tourist pass called PassCity , which will be of use not only to foreign travelers who have come to Russia for a few days, but also to students from overseas and expatriates whose stay extends to a few months and more. PassCity has apps available for Android and iOS with free audio guides in English and Chinese.

PassCity has become Russia's first pass which is valid in two cities at once and covers all the major museums of Moscow and St. Petersburg. The price for a tourist pass for 3/5/7/10 days varies from $80 (1 person, 3 days - 5190 rubles ) to $230 (2 people, 10 days - 14,390 rubles ). A 90/180/360-day pass costs from $ 64 (1 person, 90 days -  3990 rubles  ) to $160  (2 people, 360 days - 9990 rubles ).  The package for several days was designed for tourists and includes an unlimited number of museum visits per day, as well as public transit. The 3/6/12-month card is meant for temporary residents of the cities and covers one museum visit a day, without access to public transit.

Apart from admission to museums, the pass gets you free coffee in the DoubleB chain of coffee shops , several trips on the airport express in Moscow, and subway rides in St. Petersburg or by taxi ordered through the Yandex.Taxi service.

For the practical and the cautious

The Voxxter team spent more than two years developing the pass; while working on it, they established partnerships with Mastercard, Yandex.Money , Yandex.Taxi (a Russian taxi service similar to Uber ), and DoubleB , a popular chain of coffee shops in St. Petersburg and Moscow.

PassCity is as easy to use as a regular credit card: It uses the Mastercard payment system, and the chosen package of services is activated upon purchase. You can deposit money on the card and use it to pay for other goods and services: Using an extra credit card instead of your primary card when traveling is a sensible security measure.

Cards are delivered through a system that has recently gained popularity among Internet banks. "You can order the pass online or through the app, and our courier will deliver it where and when you decide, for instance, your hotel, or the railway station where the airport express arrives. Our customers have confirmed that this is a lot more convenient than having to look for a sales office in an unknown city," explains Maksim Ivlev, Voxxter CEO.

Voxxter believes the pass could be useful for tourists who come to Russia to watch upcoming sporting events, including the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

University Requirements

International student fees.

The International Student Fee , implemented in 2009, allows the staff of International Services to provide a comprehensive package of services and activities to serve and support the growing population of international students at the University.

The International Student Orientation Fee was also implemented in 2009. International Services strives to provide new international students with the greatest assistance possible as they settle into their surroundings in Moscow. As such, attendance at the multi-day international student orientation is required for all new students. This orientation includes a complete immigration workshop, cultural activities, access and information to many important academic, social and health-related resources, and provides several meals and interaction with peers and current students.

Health Insurance

The University of Idaho requires international students to enroll in the University of Idaho Student Health Insurance Program (SHIP) .

  • You are automatically charged for SHIP when you register for classes. You will see SHIP on your bill from the University of Idaho for each semester. You do not have to fill out any forms.
  • If you have dependents, then you need to enroll them an independent medical insurance plan.
  • Find out the cost of SHIP and details of coverage .

Please Note: You and your dependents are required to have health insurance the day you enter the U.S. To activate your SHIP insurance coverage prior to the first day of your enrollment, email [email protected] with your name, V#, and date of arrival in the U.S.

Alternative Health Insurance Requirements

J-1 students and dependents of students are required to have health insurance that meets or exceeds the U.S. Department of State requirements. Those requirements are as follows:

  • Benefits of at least $50,000 per accident or illness
  • A deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness
  • Co-payment amount not greater than 25% so that the insurance pays at least 75% of charges
  • Accident and illness coverage (to include maternity insurance)
  • Repatriation coverage (a type of life insurance whereby the deceased is returned to their home country)
  • Medical evacuation coverage (If the student is too ill to attend school, this pays for the student to return to their home country.)

Authorized Exceptions to SHIP

  • Foreign Embassy Sponsored Students: All embassy sponsored plans that have full medical coverage (pay full medical expenses incurred in the U.S.) are accepted as an authorized alternative plan to SHIP (Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia, Embassy of the State of Kuwait, Libya, etc.). A sponsor letter stating full medical benefits are paid for the student (and dependents), a copy of the insurance card, and page 1 of the insurance waiver form signed by the student must be submitted to International Services before a SHIP waiver will be processed.
  • Engineering Outreach or other Outreach students (taking only Outreach courses) will automatically have a SHIP waiver because they will not be on the U of I campus. If your insurance was not waived, please email [email protected]
  • Students at the Idaho State University/University of Idaho Center in Idaho Falls who are registered for classes at Idaho State University (must show Idaho State University registration and insurance)
  • Washington State University students taking concurrent classes at the University of Idaho are ineligible for SHIP at all times.
  • H-1B or J-1 scholars taking courses at the University of Idaho must show their insurance cards to International Services for a SHIP waiver.
  • Exchange students through another university that are on the University of Idaho Study Abroad Program and are out of the U.S. in another country will not be charged for SHIP insurance.
