When Steve Perry Played His Last Full Show With Journey

Journey were partway through a U.S. tour when they performed on Feb. 1, 1987 at the Sullivan Sports Arena in Anchorage. So it may even have come to a surprise to them that it was the last show they’d ever play with singer Steve Perry .

When they completed their performance of “Faithfully” that night, they closed the book on their rise to fame. And even though there would be one more album with Perry, and a 10-minute guest appearance at an all-star concert in 1991 , it was the last time he led them through a full performance.

Tensions had been simmering between Perry and guitarist Neal Schon . Following the release of three definitive classic-rock albums – Escape , Frontiers  and Raised on Radio – Journey were undeniably massive. But Perry dismissed bassist Ross Valory and drummer Steve Smith before the recording of 1986’s Raised on Radio , and all was still not well.

The singer, who was also producing the album, later said he was “toast” as he dealt with the illness and then death of his mother during sessions. That had led to the breakdown in relations that forced his hand at Anchorage. He refused to continue to the tour, the following shows were canceled and the band went on hiatus.

Watch Steve Perry Perform With Journey on the 'Raised on Radio' Tour

Perry had another argument in his favor: His 1984 solo album, Street Talk , had won him even more personal acclaim, and it could be argued that he didn’t need Journey anymore. The presence of his solo tracks “Strung Out” and “Oh Sherrie” on the Raised on Radio  tour set list suggested he felt he was in a strong bargaining position and that his colleagues accepted that.

When the classic lineup regrouped for 1996’s Trial by Fire , Perry suffered a hip injury that prevented them from touring for 18 months because he didn’t want to undergo the surgery he required. With the clock ticking, the group issued an ultimatum: Have the procedure or be fired. Perry chose the latter option , saying that he felt unduly pressured by his colleagues’ approach, and insisting he’d never work with them again – although he joined them for an award ceremony on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2005.

Journey continued with Steve Augeri and later Jeff Scott Soto, before hiring singer Arnel Pineda in 2007. Perry dropped off the radar for a long time, before making a well-received comeback – without his former bandmates.

So, for now, it seems that the 21-song show in Anchorage was the last time the Voice would perform a full-length show with the band he helped lift into the stratosphere. As Perry noted in 2014, “I’m not the person I was 30 years ago. That person is gone."

Over the course of only four '80s albums, former progressive rock band turned rock balladeers Journey churned out an impressive array of hit singles and prime album tracks. Almost all are worthy of praise, but it's also notable that a handful of these tunes have not only withstood the test of time but stand up well to focused scrutiny. The best of the best of Journey may be up for debate, but the fact that the band still matters as a key arena rock prototype has by now become a matter of certainty. Here are eight reasons why presented in chronological order of release.

"Any Way You Want It"

Despite the occasional but too-frequent use of this tune in annoying TV advertising, this full-tilt rocker from 1980's Departure most definitely stands as one of Journey's finest moments as a band. After all, it serves as definitive proof that the quartet had the capacity to rock with some serious authority. I don't know why people tend to forget that Neal Schon was not only a guitar prodigy but also possesses one of the most distinctively scorching guitar styles in rock. This is one of the few Journey classics on which Steve Perry's vocals take a bit of a backseat; it's all about Schon's killer riff and his commanding solos. And what's more rock than that?

"Don't Stop Believin'"

A few years back I went through a fairly prolonged "I hate Journey, they're so lame" phase, the kind that could be put to an end only through well-placed logic. I have a friend of mine to thank for that; when she offered me a viable explication of the "streetlight people" lyric from this 1981 standout, I lost a key assumed reason to criticize this rock masterpiece. A graceful combination of muscular guitars and haunting melody, this song just works down to its core, in a way as magically mysterious as the Internet or a car engine to those of us not inclined to understand the workings of such things. So just sit back and enjoy the majesty.

"Stone in Love"

Again, anyone inclined to dismiss Journey as a cream puff band overly fond of ballads and sorely lacking rock and roll cred should give another listen to this underrated classic from 1981's Escape. In terms of rock guitar riffage, this tune earns major points for its explosive intro, but beyond that, it showcases the general tightness of Journey's core quintet of members during the band's peak period. I mean, if even Ross Valory's bass playing shines during the irresistible chorus of this nearly perfect mainstream rock song, Journey must have pretty well known what it was doing.

"Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)"

This song is essential in a total package sort of way, from the unmistakable, energizing synth opening all the way across the spectrum to its impossibly cheesy music video chock full of '80s missteps . Whatever the angle, "Separate Ways" is valuable, central '80s music listening. After all, what makes Journey's best music so constant is the consistent quality of band components, from Perry's vocal showcase to Schon's aggressive, solid guitar work to - of course - the efficient and skilled songwriting necessary to produce this song's utterly transcendent bridge and chorus. A glorious '80s moment.

"After the Fall"

Perhaps the most underappreciated vital track from Journey's peak '80s period, this tune doubles effectively as a power ballad and mid-tempo rocker. The band happened to be a master of that format during this era, but here the lines are blurred wonderfully between lighter-worthy romantic balladry and a melodic guitar-hero sing-along. Steve Augeri, Jeff Scott Soto and Arnel Pineda notwithstanding, no one ever has sounded or probably ever will sound quite like Steve Perry at his powerfully emotive best, and this distinctiveness always will be the fuel that drives Journey's greatness.

"Faithfully"

Of Journey's two blockbuster slow-dance power ballads, I've always preferred this one for its proper appropriation of Schon's nimble lead guitar work into the winning formula. That's not to say "Open Arms" doesn't have its charms, but it's certainly one of the few occasions in which the band did not use all its positive attributes for maximum impact. "Faithfully," on the other hand, authentically tackles a subject - the impact of excessive time apart on romantic relationships - with equal amounts of universality and specificity. This soft rock classic is perhaps the epitome of Journey's wide-ranging appeal.

"Girl Can't Help It"

Despite the odd move of ditching drummer Steve Smith and bassist Valory for the 1986 album Raised on Radio, the music on the last release from Journey's most successful phase maintained the band's successful formula of guitar, keyboards, and, of course, Steve Perry. This song didn't disappoint longtime fans even if they were tired of waiting for a follow-up to 1983's Frontiers, and the reasons it struck such a chord are, again, solid song structure and familiar if not groundbreaking lyrical treatment of the inherent pitfalls of romance. It's not Perry's fault his voice soars in such an irresistible way; the boy just can't help it.

"I'll Be Alright Without You"

The good thing about Journey going on hiatus following the Raised on Radio tour is that the best music on that disc measured up quite favorably with the band's highest-quality earlier material. That's actually a pretty rare occurrence when bands are wise enough to exit before inevitable decline sets in. This fine mid-tempo track arguably stands as one of the band's most impressive achievements of the '80s, blessed as it is with a compelling keyboard groove, some of Schon's tastiest lead guitar work of his long career, and another forehead-vein-protruding but the thoroughly engrossing vocal performance from Mr. Perry.

Journey Band Members

I first fell in love with the band Journey when I was in high school and brought the band’s album Infinity when it was first released. Their record company Columbia Records at the time heavily promoted the album. It was Steve Perry’s first recording with the band and Columbia knew they had a hit on their hands. I was blown away by Steve Perry’s voice and completely floored by how great the songs were on the record. Journey became one of the biggest bands of the seventies. They helped define the term “Stadium Rock.” The band has gone through multiple lineup changes over the years.  This article takes a look at the revolving door of musicians who have come and gone as members of the band Journey .

The Orginal Journey Band Members

Neal Schon, born on February 27, 1954, in Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma, is an American musician best known as the lead guitarist for Journey. He was one of the founding members of the band in 1973. Over the years, Schon played a significant role in shaping the band’s sound and has appeared on every Journey album to date, from their self-titled debut album “Journey” (1975) to their most recent releases. He primarily plays the electric guitar but has been known to play acoustic guitar and perform backing vocals as well. Schon co-wrote some of the band’s most iconic songs like “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Wheel in the Sky,” and “Any Way You Want It.” Besides his work with Journey, Neal Schon has had a rich solo career and has also been a part of other bands like Santana and Bad English .

Ross Valory

Ross Valory, born on February 2, 1949, in San Francisco, California, is an American musician renowned for being Journey’s original bass guitarist. He joined the band at its inception in 1973 and contributed to albums like “Journey” (1975), “Infinity” (1978), “Escape” (1981), and many more. Valory played both the bass guitar and occasionally provided backing vocals. He was a part of Journey until he was fired from the band in 2020. Apart from Journey, Valory was involved in the Steve Miller Band and also had a side project called “The Vu.”

Gregg Rolie

Gregg Rolie was born on June 17, 1947, in Seattle, Washington, and is an American keyboardist and singer. He was a founding member of Journey and joined the band in 1973. Rolie played keyboards and was the lead vocalist on the band’s first three albums: “Journey” (1975), “Look into the Future” (1976), and “Next” (1977). He left Journey in 1980 to pursue other musical endeavors. Notably, he was a member of Santana before joining Journey and co-wrote and sang lead vocals on classics like “Black Magic Woman” and “Evil Ways.” After leaving Journey, he went on to form The Gregg Rolie Band and also joined Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band .

George Tickner

George Tickner, born on September 8, 1946, in Syracuse, New York, is an American musician who played rhythm guitar for Journey. He was among the original members when the band was founded in 1973 but left shortly after the release of the band’s self-titled debut album in 1975. Tickner contributed to the writing of some early songs but didn’t stay with the band long enough to participate in the more commercial phases of Journey’s career. After leaving Journey, Tickner largely retired from professional music to pursue a career in medicine.

Charles “Prairie” Prince

Charles “Prairie” Prince, born on May 7, 1950, in Charlotte, North Carolina, was the original drummer for Journey when the band was formed in 1973. However, he never officially recorded with the band and left before their debut album was made. He is best known for his work with The Tubes , a San Francisco-based rock band. Though his time with Journey was short-lived, Prince has had a significant career in music, working with artists like Todd Rundgren, and Jefferson Starship, and as a session musician for various other artists.

The Next Phase and Beyond

Aynsley dunbar.

Aynsley Dunbar, born on January 10, 1946, in Liverpool, England, is a British drummer known for his work with various rock and blues bands. He joined Journey in 1974, shortly after the band’s formation, and played on the albums “Journey” (1975), “Look into the Future” (1976), and “Next” (1977). Dunbar’s jazz-influenced drumming style added a unique element to Journey’s early sound. He left the band in 1978 before the band shifted to a more mainstream, commercial sound. Apart from Journey, Dunbar has had an extensive career, playing with artists like Frank Zappa, David Bowie, and Whitesnake.

Robert Fleischman

Robert Fleischman, born on March 11, 1953, in Los Angeles, California, is an American musician who briefly served as Journey’s lead vocalist in 1977. He co-wrote and sang some of Journey’s most famous songs, including “Don’t Stop Believin'” and “Open Arms.” Perry left the band in 1998 due to health issues and to pursue a solo career, which itself has been highly successful, featuring hits like “Oh Sherrie.”

Steve Smith

Steve Smith, born on August 21, 1954, in Whitman, Massachusetts, is an American drummer. He joined Journey in 1978, replacing Aynsley Dunbar, and played on some of their most successful albums like “Evolution,” “Escape,” and “Frontiers.” Known for his technical skill, Smith left the band in 1985 but returned for various stints, the latest being from 2015 to 2020. Outside of Journey, Smith has had a rich career in jazz and has been part of his own jazz fusion band, Vital Information.

Randy Jackson

Randy Jackson, born on June 23, 1956, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is an American musician, best known as a judge on the television show “American Idol.” He joined Journey as a bass player for a short stint during the mid-1980s and played on the 1986 album “Raised on Radio.” Jackson was part of the band’s transition towards a more pop-oriented sound during that period. Released exclusively on VHS and LaserDisc and has NEVER been released on DVD until NOW!

This REMASTERED DVD is sourced directly from the original high quality LaserDisc to DVD for the first time ever! Quality is unmatched as it transferred from the long since deleted LaserDisc from OVER THIRTY SEVEN years ago. Another original offer from your team at MVR!

Background: It is important to note: Songs for “Don’t Stop Belevin’” and “Faithfully“ were omitted from the VHS version of this classic concert. Only the LaserDisc release has these two rare gems from the original concert. This extended edition results in a extended concert and documentary that last nearly TWO HOURS compared to the VHS release length of the concert of only 98 minutes. The exclusive Japanese only LaserDisc release is 1 Hour 50 Minutes…….

Description: Multi-platinum recording group JOURNEY blends the innovative sounds of it’s most recent LP at the time, “Frontiers”, with intimate visuals and film footage from the group’s record breaking 1983 world tour. Filmed by Emmy Award-winning N F L Films and narrated by John Facenda, “the voice of the N F L.” And if you loved the videos for “Faithfully” and “Send Her my Love,” you’ll recognize the footage.

FRONTIERS…AND BEYOND!, an entertaining, inside look at life on the road is an intimate look at the band and their life on the road, includes in-depth interviews with all band members and crew, a real in-depth look at what it takes to put together such an enormous tour. This short documentary also features a look back at the history that lead them to this monster album “Frontiers”  and the tour that followed in 1983. Great rare tour footage for any JOURNEY/STEVE PERRY collector!

DVD Menu divides content as “Side 1” and “Side 2” to mimic the content style of the original LaserDisc

Live at JFK Stadium, Philadelphia, PA. USA 4th of June 1983 .

For any Journey fan this is as good as it gets! The transfer from laser disc to DVD is superb, bar none. Since this is the imported Laser disc version from japan, it is the full version of the documentary/concert not the edited one found on the VHS here in the US or re-release on short lived DVD version. The one thing that i will address is that since the laser disc is from japan, it does have closed caption permanently on and can not be disabled but, the audio is in English. Don’t let this stop you from getting this awesome DVD. It just brings authenticity to the transfer from laser disc to DVD. Thank you MVR for sharing this, at long lost, highly sought after gem.

A must have for any true Journey / Steve Perry fan! Over the years I’ve had several “copies” plus, the original VHS of this documentary and now this one from the guys at Music Video Resource. This remaster DVD, by far is the best video quality I have come across!

Eugene Davis (verified owner) – September 25, 2020

Great DVD for all JOURNEY fans. Service was awesome as usual. Great remastering of this classic stage of the bands career. Thank you for offering this rare item at this great website.

I can’t say enough how happy I am with DVD. The specific reason I purchased it was because it has concert footage from the June 4, 1983 Philadelphia concert. The inclusion of ‘Don’t stop Believing’ was as it is in the ‘Frontiers and Beyond’ Documentary as well as the Director’s Cut.

In addition it contains John Facenda narrating. The ’83 Philly concert contained Faithfully which eventually was released as a music video. This concert has so much personal meaning for me and my wife, as it’s where we met some 38 years ago watching our all-time favorite band at the height of their career. We will cherish that memory til the day we die. To find this DVD with the concert and the band playing our two most favorite songs – ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ and ‘Faithfully’ – was just amazing for us.

Fortunately, I can only give this review (5) stars. If I could, I give it a (10) for being a complete product plus a product of quality.

Daniel Alustiza (verified owner) – May 29, 2021

As mentioned, in another review, there are Japanese subtitles with the commentary, so don’t think it’s a setting with your DVD player, when playing back. This is an awesome DVD! Anyone who has seen the Journey Greatest Hits DVD, will see where some of the video footage comes from for that DVD, most likely being this Philadelphia concert. The song “Faithfully” is not a concert video, as it appears to be the same video on the Greatest Hits DVD, which I believe was a MTV video release, but the whole DVD still kicks ass! There are songs on this DVD that are NOT on the Greatest Hits DVD.

Tamron Hall's new book is a compelling thriller, but leaves us wanting more

journey live 1985

Jordan just wants some answers.

Tamron Hall's "Watch Where They Hide" (William Morrow, 246 pp, ★★½ out of four), out now, is a sequel to her 2021 mystery/thriller novel " As The Wicked Watch."

Both books follow Jordan Manning, a Chicago TV reporter who works the crime beat. In this installment, it’s 2009, and two years have passed since the events in the previous book. If you haven’t read that first novel yet, no worries, it's not required reading.

Jordan is investigating what happened to Marla Hancock, a missing mother of two from Indianapolis who may have traveled into Chicago. The police don’t seem to be particularly concerned about her disappearance, nor do her husband or best friend. But Marla’s sister, Shelly, is worried and reaches out to Jordan after seeing her on TV reporting on a domestic case.

As Jordan looks into Marla’s relationships and the circumstances surrounding the last moments anyone saw her, she becomes convinced something bad occurred. She has questions, and she wants the police to put more effort into the search, or even to just admit the mom is truly missing. The mystery deepens, taking sudden turns when confusing chat room messages and surveillance videos surface. What really happened to Marla?

Check out: USA TODAY's weekly Best-selling Booklist

The stories Jordan pursues have a ripped-from-the-headlines feel. Hall weaves in themes of race, class and gender bias as Jordan navigates her career ambitions and just living life as a young Black woman.

Hall, a longtime broadcast journalist and talk show host, is no stranger to television or investigative journalism and brings a rawness to Jordan Manning and a realness to the newsroom and news coverage in her novels.

Jordan is brilliant at her job, but also something of a vigilante.

Where no real journalist, would dare to do what Jordan Manning does, Hall gives her main character no such ethical boundaries. Jordan often goes rogue on the cases she covers, looking into leads and pursuing suspects — more police investigator than investigative journalist.

Sometimes this works: Jordan is a fascinating protagonist, she’s bold, smart, stylish and unapologetically Black. She cares about her community and her work, and she wants to see justice done.

But sometimes it doesn’t. The plot is derailed at times by too much explanation for things that’s don’t matter and too little on the ones that do, muddying up understanding Jordan’s motivations.

And sudden narration changes from Jordan’s first person to a third-person Shelly, but only for a few chapters across the book, is jarring and perhaps unnecessary.

There are a great deal of characters between this book and the previous one, often written about in the sort of painstaking detail that only a legacy journalist can provide, but the most interesting people in Jordan’s life — her news editor, her best friend, her police detective friend who saves her numerous times, her steadfast cameraman — are the ones who may appear on the page, but don’t get as much context or time to shine.

The mysteries are fun, sure, but I’m left wishing we could spend more time unraveling Jordan, learning why she feels called to her craft in this way, why the people who trust her or love her, do so. It's just like a journalist to be right in front of us, telling us about someone else's journey but not much of her own.

When the books focus like a sharpened lens on Jordan, those are the best parts. She’s the one we came to watch.

How a wandering white shark's epic journey could provide clues for protecting them

A 14-foot-long white shark might not be something swimmers want to see at the beach

As sharks go, LeeBeth is something like a long-haul trucker with gills and giant teeth.

Swimmers at the beach might not be excited to see the 14-foot (4.3-meter) white shark, but scientists following LeeBeth's movements are thrilled that the big fish's epic journey could provide valuable clues to help the species. And they're curious where she'll go next.

White sharks, often referred to as great whites, were made famous by the 1970s hit movie “Jaws.” They roam the ocean searching for their favorite food , marine mammals, and were once hunted without discrimination. Some scientists believe growing populations of seals in parts of the Atlantic Ocean are helping the sharks, which were designated a protected species in 1997.

Since getting her tracking device near South Carolina in December, LeeBeth has traveled more than 2,000 miles (3,200 kilometers) south and into the Gulf of Mexico, the scientists monitoring her every move said Monday. They watched as she made history in late February by traveling further into the Gulf than any previously tracked white shark. A signal showed her off the coast near Matamoros, Mexico, just across the U.S. border from South Padre Island, Texas.

The shark's presence so far west indicates that this part of the Gulf of Mexico could also be important to other white sharks, said Megan Winton, a senior scientist with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, based in Chatham, Massachusetts. International cooperation is important to protect the sharks, whose worldwide populations are recovering from decades of overfishing, she said.

“We don't know how many white sharks travel that far west, but it's a good indication they do,” Winton said. “There are only a handful of sharks that have been tracked west of the Mississippi.”

The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy collaborates with Massachusetts state government to tag white sharks, with more than 300 tagged so far. Thousands more have been tagged by other organizations worldwide, Winton said.

The conservancy paired up with fishing charter Outcast Sport Fishing of Hilton Head, South Carolina, to tag LeeBeth.

Chip Michalove, who owns Outcast, said LeeBeth turned out to be an advantageous shark to tag, as she had sent more signals back from the tracking device than most. The tracker sends a signal whenever the shark breaks the surface of the water.

“Not only one of the biggest sharks we've caught, but she's the best-pinging shark as well,” Michalove said. “We definitely hit a home run with LeeBeth.”

The last time LeeBeth checked in was on March 7, when tracking data showed the great white to be about 100 miles (160 kilometers) off the coast of Galveston, Texas.

From Neon-Clad Rollerblading to the Oscars 2024: Ryan Gosling’s Kentastic Barbie Journey

journey live 1985

By Kara Warner

Image may contain Ryan Gosling Electrical Device Microphone Accessories Glasses Clothing Hat Formal Wear and Tie

Ryan Gosling felt the Kenergy from the moment he stepped on to the Oscars red carpet, earning what we’re told were some of the loudest screams for anyone there. And moments into Jimmy Kimmel ’s opening monologue, he and his very own Barbie, Margot Robbie, were congratulated on winning the most important award of all: “the genetic lottery.” But the moment he and everyone else was waiting for, of course, was the live performance of “I’m Just Ken.”

He started his performance from in the seats, located directly behind a giggling Robbie and wearing, of course, a bedazzled pink suit. Mark Ronson, the actual nominee for the song, had his own pink shirt going as he played guitar. Once Gosling made his way onstage, he was joined by a posse of cowboy-hat-wearing Kens, joining them in perfect choreography. A few beats later, the Kens from the film— Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ncuti Gatwa, and Scott Evans among them— took the stage as well. Though the production was not quite as elaborate as what you see in the movie, there was a distinct Busby Berkeley vibe to the whole thing, with the Barbie head cutouts and perfectly arranged cowboy hats.

For the grand finale, it was time for the women to get in on the game—Gosling stepped down to the audience, while Slash played guitar, to hand the mic over to Greta Gerwig, Robbie, America Ferrera, and even Emma Stone for a sing-along. It was an Oscar moment to remember on every possible level.

When plans for a movie about Barbie were first announced, the intrigue was definitely there, but so was a heaping dose of skepticism. Even when Robbie and Gosling were officially cast as Barbie and Ken, and with Oscar nominee Gerwig directing her own script cowritten with Noah Baumbach, the filmgoing world couldn’t decide what to make of a live-action movie about an iconic plastic doll and her surfer dude sidekick.

But then came photos from the set of the very colorful and familiar costumes and what even looked like potential action sequences. That was followed by the no-holds-barred press tour , during which the A-list ensemble , and Gosling in particular , were clearly delighted to be leaning into the fun, frivolity, and Kenergy of it all—including the presumed uselessness of Ken in general. “My kids were my introduction to [Barbie],” he told People at the time. “I think they’re confused as to why I would want to play Ken. They have no use for Ken.”

When critics and audiences finally got their eyes on what Robbie, Gosling, and writer-director Gerwig had pulled off, it was clear they had all made something special—and with eight Oscar nominations for Barbie, Hollywood largely agreed. Vanity Fair ’s own Rebecca Ford called Gosling’s Ken the actor’s “best performance yet.”

“Ryan is the most comedically gifted actor I have ever worked with. He really is,” Robbie said of Gosling. “He’s known for his dramatic acting, and rightly so. But he is unbelievably gifted with comedy, and I ruined most of his takes because I was laughing through all of it.” Since the film’s release last July, it has racked up a slew of major awards, including what VF ’s David Canfield noted was “a perfect record of best-picture, directing, and acting nominations from the likes of the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, and industry guilds (PGA, DGA, SAG).” (Yes, even despite those infamous Oscar subs for Robbie and Gerwig). Gosling was nominated on his own as a supporting actor, of course, but was also a key player in the “I’m Just Ken” mock rock anthem , for which songwriters Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt were nominated. Through it all, Gosling has been gracious and sometimes surprised by just how well-received his emo, white-fur-coat-wearing, almost-villain comedic character has been. He also didn’t shy away from publicly supporting his director and his costar when Gerwig and Robbie were left out from the director and actress categories (though both were still nominees, for Gerwig’s script and Robbie’s work as a producer). “I am extremely honored to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year of so many great films. And I never thought I’d being saying this, but I’m also incredibly honored and proud that it’s for portraying a plastic doll named Ken,” Gosling said in a statement after nominations were announced. “But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film. No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit, and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.”

That Gosling’s Kenergetic journey has now concluded on the Oscars stage, thanks to a highly anticipated performance of “I’m Just Ken,” is just icing on his Mojo Dojo Casa House cake.

Stephen A. Smith Relives “Jobless” to $20 Million Riches Journey at Live Event in Austin, Texas

N BA analyst Stephen A. Smith often finds himself in the news. As Smith succeeds outside of the ESPN ecosystem while nearing the end of his contract there, he is increasingly vocal in public comments about his status at the network. In a recent live event of his show “The Stephen A. Smith Show” live from SXSW in Austin, Texas, he addressed the remarks made by him a couple of days ago about being no.1 in the network. He also dished on a time when he was jobless himself.

Smith addressed how his statement was taken out of context, leaving out the major part where he threw some love to ESPN. He further pointed out that he brings out subjects like this because as per Smith, it’s what got him in trouble years ago when he got let go, “ When I didn’t have a contract and I was out on the streets and I was unemployed wondering whether or not I was going to be able to pay a bill let alone bills for years to come….What did I learn? I learned that I had no clue as to what my value was because I didn’t study the business that I was in and by virtue of not studying the business that I was in, I empowered others to define my worth because I had no clue as to what my worth is .” Well, now the tables are turned! He’s reportedly balling out at a staggering $20 million!

Sarfaraz Khan: A Mumbai maidan cricketer’s long journey to India Test cap

Once hailed as one of India’s brightest prospects, Sarfaraz Khan spent a decade waiting for a chance to play international cricket.

Sarfaraz Khan

Mumbai, India – Batting for nearly 10 hours at Mumbai’s Cross Maidan, Sarfaraz Khan first stole the limelight as a schoolboy in 2009 when he rewrote the history of the famed ground in the Indian metropolis renowned for producing great batters.

The then-12-year-old recorded the highest-ever score in the Harris Shield, a tournament known as the Holy Grail of school cricket in the city.

From kolkata’s slums to elite cricket: the story of india’s saika ishaque, girona: from defeating napoleon to dreaming of ruling spanish football, india’s manisha kalyan: from a village in punjab to european football, ‘in gaza, football is the only escape’: palestine star mahmoud wadi on war.

Dressed in traditional cricket whites – loose-fitting white shirt and track pants – the strongly-built boy from Kurla, an eastern lower middle-class suburb of the bustling city, scored 439 runs and became a national sensation.

Playing for Rizvi Springfield in the Under-16 category, Sarfaraz hit 56 fours and 12 sixes in his innings as he broke Ramesh Nagdev’s 46-year-old record of 427 not out. On his way, Sarfaraz went past the score of another Ramesh – the 346 runs scored by cricket legend Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar in 1988.

Following Sarfaraz’s record-breaking achievement, local newspapers and national media were quick to wonder if he would be “the next Tendulkar”, but the prodigy slid into obscurity.

For years, Sarfaraz sweated it out on Mumbai’s maidans (grounds) as he forged an impressive career in first-class cricket awaiting a call from the national selectors.

But as seasons passed and opportunities seemingly slipped through his grasp, Sarfaraz found himself in the shadows. He watched Shubman Gill, Prithvi Shaw and Yashasvi Jaiswal – batters who came after him – take the big stage.

After spending a decade waiting for his moment, the gutsy batter finally found himself donning the Indian Test cap last month.

On February 15, 14 years since that record-breaking outing in the maidans, Sarfaraz made his Test debut against England in Rajkot, Gujarat.

Sarfaraz was given the nod by the selectors after absences and injuries finally forced their hand.

“It is a matter of pride to be selected from a population of more than 1.4 billion,” Sarfaraz said in an interview with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Following a round of applause from his teammates as he received the cap from ex-captain Anil Kumble, Sarfaraz rushed to his father and wife to celebrate.

Realising the arduous journey to the top was finally over, Naushad, Sarfaraz’s father and coach, kissed the cap and burst into tears.

“It was Abbu’s [my father’s] dream first to play for India,” Sarfaraz said.

“Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. Things weren’t [financially] that strong at home. Then he thought he would focus on his children, and he worked hard on me … This was the proudest moment of my life.”

Naushad, the player-turned-coach, had found a new perspective at the end.

“Earlier, I used to think why aren’t my dreams becoming a reality … but after Sarfaraz received his cap for India, my thinking has changed,” he said.

“For all the children who are striving hard, I would like to tell them: Give the night’s passage its time. The sun will rise in its own time.”

‘Everyone is talking about him’

On the day of his debut, Sarfaraz had to wait for four hours to score his first runs as he went out to bat at number six.

In the first innings, the 26-year-old scored a half-century and looked set for his maiden Test hundred, but was run out for 62 after a communication mix-up with Ravindra Jadeja.

In the second innings, he remained 68 not out, becoming only the fourth Indian cricketer to score twin fifties on his Test debut, as India comfortably won the match to take a 2-1 series lead.

Sarfaraz became the talk of the town.

At the very maidans where Sarfaraz’s journey began, coaches and young cricketers were in awe.

For Mohammed Akram Shaikh, who trained with Sarfaraz about a decade ago at Mumbai’s popular Azad Maidan, it was a moment of pride.

“I felt really happy watching him play,” Shaikh, who runs a cricket academy, said, pointing to the goosebumps on his hands. “I felt so proud that a kid who played here made such strides.”

As a schoolboy, Sarfaraz often tested himself against bowlers much older than him and by the age of 17, he was playing in the Ranji Trophy, India’s first-class championship, for Mumbai.

He would go on to represent India at the 2014 and 2016 ICC Under-19 World Cups and make his debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

But he had to endure a 10-year wait before his first Test call-up – playing 46 matches in first-class cricket with an impressive average of 70.

“Sarfaraz had to wait for a long time but he got his chance at the right time because now everyone is talking about him,” Shaikh said.

Double hundred Double fifty This duo of Yashasvi & Sarfaraz has been double trouble for England. I couldn’t watch them play live, but was very pleased to hear about their knocks. Keep it up! 🏏 🇮🇳 #INDvENG pic.twitter.com/54XVb35HCs — Sachin Tendulkar (@sachin_rt) February 18, 2024

The magic of maidans

Sarfaraz is the latest success story to emerge out of Mumbai’s iconic maidans, which have produced some of India’s best batters such as the legendary Tendulkar, current Test captain Rohit Sharma, former skipper Sunil Gavaskar, and batting great Vijay Merchant.

The maidans are the home of cricket in Mumbai.

It is on the red soil of those dusty fields that dreams take root and aspirations soar, as young boys hone their skills from early morning to evening, often under the scorching sun.

Known as the nursery of cricket, these maidans often have uneven outfields filled with stones and rocks. The fields are not the best maintained, with rubbish scattered around the periphery.

The Azad Maidan is home to 22 pitches. All those pitches, except one, overlap each other, posing a challenge for players to dodge the ball from adjacent pitches.

The surfaces test players with a variety of conditions, and for the batsmen, scoring a 100 is the benchmark.

“Anybody who can play here can play anywhere in the world because the wickets here are quite challenging,” Shaikh said. “The surface is uneven, so the ball bounces a lot.

“Both the bowlers and batsmen face a test here and even while fielding it can be difficult because sometimes the ball can hit your face.”

Izaan Shaikh, a youngster from Goa, had the opportunity to train with Sarfaraz at the ground last year.

Izaan, who trains at the Macho Cricket Academy run by Sarfaraz’s family, said Sarfaraz would often share tips with young players.

“Sarfu bhai [brother Sarfaraz] is a very hard-working person. His story inspires me,” 20-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, who is coached by Sarfaraz’s brother Moin, told Al Jazeera.

“He has shown that when you put in effort, you get a happy ending after all.”

‘Unbelievable commitment’

Fitness issues, a failed move from Mumbai to the Uttar Pradesh team in domestic cricket and injuries set Sarfaraz back for some time before delivering strong performances in the past four domestic seasons.

Deepak Lotlikar, ground in charge of the Karnataka Sporting Association at Cross Maidan, has witnessed Sarfaraz’s struggle from up close.

“I have seen Sarfaraz play since his childhood,” Lotlikar said. “He was a little naughty as a child and goofy too. But he was very passionate about cricket. His commitment was unbelievable.”

Lotlikar was at the maidan with Sarfaraz’s brother Moin when his selection for India was announced.

“I broke the news to Moin and he was so emotional at that time,” Lotlikar said with moist eyes. “He rested his head on my shoulder and burst into tears – all of us at the maidan did.”

Sarfaraz went on to play the fourth and fifth Tests and lifted the series winners’ trophy last week. It remains to be seen whether his 200 runs in three innings will keep him in the Test side once the likes of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul return, but Sarfaraz has done enough to inspire young cricketers at Cross Maidan.

For 10-year-old Mudassar Shaikh, Sarfaraz is already a hero.

“I hope I can be like Sarfaraz one day,” he said with a smile.
