On the surface, "Maidentrip" is a documentary that recounts the incredible feat achieved by Laura Dekker , the Dutch schoolgirl who became the youngest person to sail solo around the world in January 2012 at age 16. But this is no fight-to-the-finish quest to break a sports record or perilous struggle for survival against the elements. Instead, it is a high-seas chanty of a coming-of-age tale: a portrait of a once-giddy youngster who develops into a poised and determined woman over the course of 17 months as she charts her course not just on the water, but in life.

The movie is directed by Jillian Schlesinger but primarily filmed with a Sony Handy Cam and narrated in both in English and Dutch (with subtitles) by Dekker herself during long passages aboard Guppy, her 38-foot refurbished ketch. In between endless days of sailing, there are stops at the Canary Islands, the Panama Canal, the Galapagos Islands and French Polynesia. Delicate watercolor-style maps provide a way to keep track of her progress while uplifting, often-propulsive string music by Ben Sollee sets the mood on the soundtrack.

One of the first orders of business, however, is to quickly address the 10-month controversy that developed in Holland in 2009 after Dekker announced her plans to circumnavigate the globe. Fearing for the teen's safety, the government stepped in, sharing custody with her parents to prevent her from attempting the challenge until a court finally ruled that she could proceed. The media labeled her spoiled and delusional.

As we learn in segments devoted to her upbringing—illustrated with home video and snapshots—if ever a child was raised to achieve this goal, it was Laura Dekker. She was born on a boat in Whangarei, New Zealand, during a seven-year trip around the world conducted by her Dutch father and German mother, and spent her first four years at sea. She had her own dinghy at 6 and always dreamed of repeating the route that her parents followed.

Divorce split up the family, with Dekker choosing to reside with her shipbuilding father while her mostly-absent mother lived elsewhere with her younger sister. She was forced to become self-sufficient when her overworked dad had a breakdown, learning various life skills and acquiring a self-assurance that would serve her well during her remarkable expedition.

Dekker captures on camera portions of some of the more harrowing episodes encountered during her oceanic trek, including the heavy damage her boat sustained after making it through the hazardous Torres Strait between Australia and New Guinea as well as enduring 60-foot waves and heavy rains while navigating around the Cape of Good Hope.

But whenever the going gets really rough, focusing on the task at hand rather than filming becomes a priority. Perhaps as a result, the narrative tends towards the meditative and Dekker's personal growth. At first, she recounts how she wanted to step ashore regularly for sightseeing. Loneliness is an issue. Dekker sounds weepy during footage of dolphins swimming alongside Guppy, as she begs them to linger a while longer.

She hangs out with an American sailing couple at one tropical port of call, catches up with her mother and sister at another and reunites with her dad in Australia, where he helps her repair the battered Guppy. But it's when Dekker is stuck adrift for 47 days waiting for the wind to pick up on the Indian Ocean that she realizes that solitude actually becomes her. "I love being alone," she says. "Freedom is when you're not attached to anything."

She also realizes that the everyday grind of the Netherlands—which she describes as "Get money, get a house, get a husband, get a baby and then die"—is not for her. Instead, Dekker buys a New Zealand flag to fly in French Polynesia, a place she refers to as "paradise."

What a relief it is to spend quality movie time with an adolescent girl who isn't pining for a boy or obsessed with social media. Not that Dekker doesn't act her age regularly. She adorns herself with headbands, wrist ornaments and necklaces. She dyes her blond hair red around the trip's midway point. She celebrates after making popcorn for the first time. She bounces around to music and eats out of a cooking pot just because she can. She even swears, though not quite like a sailor.

Hard to put an age on

Positive message superceeds concerns about language., what's the story.

Fourteen-year-old Laura Dekker, a teenager from Holland, sets out to be the youngest person ever to sail around the world alone in MAIDENTRIP. Before she attempts to do so, she confronts the Dutch government, who try everything in their power to stop her and to put her in foster care and separate her from her father. She wins her court case and is free to pursue her dream. Using a mix of shots from the camera Laura brought with her on her trip, footage from her childhood, and shots from director Jillian Schlesinger, this documentary shows the highs and lows of Dekker's voyage, as well as the people she meets along the way as she traverses all three oceans in two years.

Is It Any Good?

This inspiring documentary manages to represent Laura Dekker as both a brave, extraordinary individual and an ordinary teenager looking to grow up and pursue her life's goals. Through a mix of footage Dekker kept on her personal camera as she kept a video diary and director Jillian Schlesinger's beautiful filming and filling in of the blanks in the story line emerges an incredible story of an extremely driven teenage girl and her dream of being the youngest person ever to sail around the world alone.

Although this documentary should prove inspirational for any teen with dreams of his or her own, families in general should find much to admire and enjoy in Maidentrip . The highs and lows of the voyage come through quite clearly, as do the numerous obstacles Dekker had to face before and during the trip. This is an unforgettable documentary that should merit repeated viewings.

Families can talk about documentaries like Maidentrip . How was Laura Dekker's history told, and how was it placed in the context of her goal?

In light of the information presented at the beginning of the movie, why do you think Laura decided to change the flag on her ship from Holland's to New Zealand's?

How do the "in-the-moment" shots from Laura's camera compare with the shots of the film's director?

A 14-Year-Old Girl Sailed Around the World — And She Brought a Camera

Maidentrip

Y ou may remember this news story from about five years ago: a 13-year-old Dutch girl, Laura Dekker, wanted to sail around the world on her own. Her family had a deep connection to boats and the sea — Laura was even born on a boat — but the Dutch government intervened and attempted to block her from going. She prevailed and set out, 14 by then, for what would become a two-year-long, 27,000-mile trip that would take her around the globe and beyond.

What you won’t remember, though, because the fact didn’t make it into the general discourse about whether Dekker should be allowed to undertake the trip, is that Laura Dekker had a camera with her. In a collaboration with first-time director Jillian Schlesinger (who was not on board the ship but met up with Dekker at a few stops along the way), the young sailor recorded the bulk of the footage for what is now Maidentrip , a documentary about the trip that arrives in theaters on Jan. 17.

( MORE : Is 13 Too Young to Sail Around the World Solo? )

In any case, whether or not you remember the initial news reports, Jillian Schlesinger does. They’re how she found Dekker in the first place. “It seemed like there were lots of opinions represented but it didn’t seem like Laura’s voice was represented anywhere,” the filmmaker says of reading about the 2009 court fight. As with many narratives about extreme endurance or precocious ability, Dekker’s story seemed destined to be either an inspiration to others or a cautionary tale — which, Schlesinger felt, didn’t do justice to the details of this particular voyage. She contacted the generally media-averse Dekker, who was eventually convinced that the idea might work, about correcting that problem. “The whole idea,” she says, “was that we were both embarking on something we hadn’t done before.”

The end result isn’t quite a found-footage documentary — Schlesinger did make suggestions for things like voice diaries that Dekker could record, though she was careful not to interfere — but neither is it the traditional filmmaking model. The director surrenders much of her control, over the physical camera and what it captures, in exchange for unfiltered access to her subject and a collaborative result. Dekker’s one-on-one relationship with the camera provided a glimpse at the kind of personality that a person has to have in order to want to do something so extreme.

What it doesn’t provide, says Schlesinger, is a larger lesson. Although much of the conversation about Laura Dekker has been about how old a person has to be, in general, to be allowed to put his or her life at risk in such an unusual way, the filmmaker — who developed a close relationship with Dekker — cautions viewers from drawing larger conclusions from Maidentrip and its story.

“It’s difficult to apply anything from Laura’s story to anything about young people being involved in such extreme activities. The reality is Laura is a truly exceptional human being with a very particular set of skills and life experiences that allow her to be able to do this very safely and very skillfully,” Schlesinger says. “It’s a very celebratory and positive representation of her story, but it’s uniquely about her and it doesn’t make an argument about what’s possible for other people.”

The filmmaker came to the conclusion that those who felt strongly about Laura Dekker’s decision were reacting as if it were themselves or their children setting out to sea, not Laura Dekker specifically. And, though Schlesinger’s direction never really questions Dekker’s right to raise anchor, that celebration of her abilities reads as honest in a not entirely flattering way. For example, being alone for months at a time seems to leave Dekker, already content with solitude, less willing to go put up with the demands of polite tact and social interaction. Then again, lest we forget, she’s only 14 and that her prickliness may be adolescence rather than the damaging effect of removal from society. The end of the film reinforces Dekker’s out-of-the-ordinary persistence and personality — and underlines one of the movie’s messages.

“It was the right thing for her to do,” says the director. “I hope that the film has a very clear message of don’t try this at home .”

Woman ‘raped at knifepoint and husband beaten’ on dream world trip

Sir Dorabji Tata Park located in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, India, Aerial view

A couple exploring south east Asia by motorcycle have claimed they were horrifically attacked by a group of men.

The woman alleged she was gang raped by at least seven men at knifepoint in a forest camp where they had pitched their tent in India.

‘They robbed thrashed us and robbed us, but their main aim was to rape me,’ she said.

Her Brazilian husband added that he had also been ‘brutally thrashed’ and beaten.

‘Also, they put a knife around my neck and told me that they would kill me,’ he said.

He said both were currently in hospital and had spoken to police about the incident at Kunji Basti forest on Friday night.

Police reportedly got involved after seeing the couple near a road, but could not understand what had happened at first as they were speaking a mixture of Spanish and English.

After using Google Translate, they were able to piece together the allegations.

Four people have since been arrested in connection with the incident in Dumka district in the eastern state of Jharkhand.

Earlier, Dumka civil surgeon Baccha Prasad Singh informed local media that the two bikers are currently in a stable condition and receiving medical treatment.

He said: ‘Both are out of danger and are undergoing treatment at the hospital. The man has sustained minor injuries. The medical examination of the victim will be done by a medical board comprising three gynaecologists, a radiologist, an orthopaedic and a dentist, headed by the superintendent of the medical college, Dr Anupuran Purti.’

Meanwhile, the Brazilian embassy released a statement saying: ‘The Brazilian embassy in New Delhi confirms that a Brazilian citizen – with dual Spanish nationality – and her Spanish husband, both on a motorcycle trip through Asia, were victims of a serious criminal attack in the Dumka district of Jharkhand state, northeast India, this weekend.

‘At the same time, in view of the information about dual nationality, the Brazilian embassy coordinated with the Spanish embassy, which said it had been contacted by the local authorities since both had entered India with Spanish passports.

‘The Spanish embassy said that it had offered all the assistance available, including psychological care, but that the victims had declined the offer as they were already being looked after by the Indian emergency services.

‘In registering its strong repudiation of the barbaric crime committed against the couple, the Brazilian embassy in New Delhi reiterates that it will continue to be available to provide all appropriate assistance and monitor all developments in the case, in close coordination with the Spanish and Indian authorities.’

The couple had been on a once-in-a-lifetime trip on their motorbikes, coming into India through West Bengal after previously spending time in Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

They had been planning to continue through India and then onto Nepal.

The Best, Most California Movies

The water-wars thriller “Chinatown” was recommended most by readers.

Soumya Karlamangla

By Soumya Karlamangla

Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway and James Hong on the set of “Chinatown.”

This week, I finally watched the 1991 movie “L.A. Story,” a fanciful romantic comedy that more than anything else is a loving sendup of Los Angeles.

The movie, written by and starring Steve Martin, is full of gags about traffic, earthquakes, hip restaurants, ever-temperate weather and happy people who aren’t actually all that happy. Martin, who grew up in Orange County, once described making the film as “like teasing your best friend.”

“You have to know them pretty well and like them, in order to be able to do it,” he told The New York Times in 1991.

When Martin’s character suggests to his love interest — played by Victoria Tennant, who was married to Martin at the time — that he give her a cultural tour of the city, she replies: “That’s the first 15 minutes. Then what?"

“L.A. Story” felt familiar to me not just because of the shooting locations — the opening sequence has a great scene at Echo Park Lake — but also because it channeled the voice of someone who knows Los Angeles.

It ranked among the movies most suggested by readers for our new California film list, a collection that I’m hoping will both entertain you and help you learn about the state. I’ll keep adding to the list, so feel free to email me at [email protected] with your choices and why you think they deserve to be included.

Here are four more selections to start us off.

“Chinatown” (1974)

Our most-recommended movie, now 50 years old, was directed by Roman Polanski and inspired by skulduggery over a quintessentially Californian issue: water rights . Read The Times’s (admittedly mixed) 1974 review , or watch the Times critic A.O. Scott revisit what’s now a beloved part of the cinematic canon.

“A classic detective mystery neo-noir, the greatest movie ever made about Los Angeles. Brilliant performances by Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway, and an Oscar-winning screenplay by Robert Towne. The best Hollywood movie of the past 50 years.” — Tony Napoli, Santa Maria

“Sideways” (2004)

In this Alexander Payne movie, two old college friends, played by Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church, set off on a wine-tasting road trip through the Santa Ynez Valley in Santa Barbara County. This movie delighted critics both of film and of wine — maybe to a fault.

“What it’s really about are all the different relationships that people have with wine. From alcoholism to appreciation of wine as an art form, the central role of the wine grape in our state is highlighted beautifully.” — Pam Van Allen, Stockton

“Lady Bird” (2017)

Greta Gerwig’s coming-of-age film about a high school student, played by Saoirse Ronan, is a love letter to a part of the state that doesn’t get much attention on the screen. Sacramento, where Gerwig was born and raised, is as much a character in the film as any of the people are.

“Growing up in Sacramento, my childhood has been immortalized by the experiences of ‘Lady Bird’ and Greta Gerwig’s beautiful scenes of my hometown. Every time I return to this movie, I am reminded of the uniqueness of Sacramento.” — Sophia Saunders, Sacramento

“Vertigo” (1958)

Widely considered Alfred Hitchcock’s best work, “Vertigo” was shot largely in and around San Francisco. You can visit the filming locations and see photos of how the city has changed since the movie was filmed.

“Does a movie made by Alfred Hitchcock need an explanation for being selected at all? How he uses the camera to twist the eye’s perspective to create disorientation, to convey Scottie’s acrophobia. Monroe, Garbo, Hitchcock understood the lens like no one else.” — Noe Serrano, San Francisco

And before you go, some good news

Much of California’s history can be told through the story of its capital city.

One of the oldest incorporated communities in the state, Sacramento has been the backdrop to many major historical moments, from the discovery of gold on Jan. 24, 1848, to the construction of the first transcontinental railroad.

Today, the state’s history can still be felt throughout Sacramento, and especially at its oldest operating businesses and restaurants. The Sacramento Bee, the region’s flagship daily newspaper, recently plumbed the city’s archives to learn more about these living historical landmarks.

Old Ironsides, a watering hole and performance venue in Southside Park, is the oldest bar in the city, and was apparently the first Sacramento establishment to receive a liquor license after Prohibition ended, according to the paper’s research. Also on the list of venerable businesses was The Sacramento Bee itself, originally named The Daily Bee, which celebrated the 167th anniversary of its first printed edition this month.

Ronaldo’s return boosts Al-Nassr’s maiden Asian Champions League title hopes

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Cristiano Ronaldo returns from suspension on Monday to try and save Al-Nassr’s season and guide the Saudi Arabian team closer to a first ever Asian Champions League title.

Last Thursday, the 39 year-old was banned for one game after making an alleged offensive gesture during a Saudi Arabian league match four days earlier. At the end of a 3-2 win over Al-Shabab, video footage appeared to show Ronaldo cupping his ear and repeatedly thrusting his hand forward near his pelvis, in a gesture that seemed to be aimed at Al-Shabab fans.

The punishment meant that Ronaldo watched frustrated from the sidelines during Thursday’s domestic league game as Al-Nassr took the lead four times but ended with a 4-4 draw at home to bottom team Al-Hazm. The result leaves the club in second in the Saudi Pro League and nine points behind leader Al-Hilal.

“Ronaldo strengthens the team and ensures that the opponent respects you more but his absence had nothing to do with the result,” said Al-Nassr coach Luis Castro. “The fact is that we are conceding too many goals and the problem is not organizational but due to individual mistakes.”

“The league result will not affect our game in the Asian Champions League as we will be fully focused on that.”

The continental competition offers Al-Nassr the best chance of silverware this season and the team makes the short trip to take on Al-Ain of the United Arab Emirates, winner in 2003, in the first leg of the quarterfinal.

On Tuesday, there is an all-Saudi Arabia clash as Al-Hilal, with a record four continental titles, takes on Al-Ittihad, champion in 2004 and 2005.

Neymar is still missing for Al-Hilal, currently top of the Saudi Arabia league, while Al-Ittihad is waiting to see if star striker Karim Benzema recovers from a muscle injury.

The two teams met in the league on Friday. Former Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante put Ittihad ahead but Al-Hilal came back to win 3-1 to record a 25th straight win in all competitions.

“The players are playing with great confidence,” said Al-Hilal coach Jorge Jesus. “This is a good thing because we are facing important matches in a short period, starting with the Asian Champions League and a tough game against Al-Ittihad and we will have to be at our best.”

Al-Ittihad, the defending Saudi Arabian champion is now in fifth in the league and out of the domestic title race.

“We are moving in the right direction and the Asian Champions League quarterfinal is now the most important game of the season for us,” said Ittihad defender Ahmed Hegazy. “We know that it will be tough against Al-Hilal but this is a different game and we are focused on this.”

In the eastern zone, —the tournament is split into two geographic halves until the final — there is an all-South Korean clash as Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors takes on Ulsan HD. Both teams have won two titles each.

In the remaining fixture, Yokohama F. Marinos of Japan meets China’s Shandong Taishan on Wednesday.

The second legs are played the following week.
