Charging Case Comparison

One of the significant differences between the JBL Tour Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 2 lies in their charging cases.

JBL has introduced a groundbreaking smart display design for their case, which allows users to control various settings directly from the case itself.

This innovative feature eliminates the need to dive into the JBL app on your phone, making the case a dedicated control center.

JBL Tour Pro 2 vs Airpods Pro 2

While some may find this smart display case redundant, it proves to be incredibly beneficial in certain scenarios.

For instance, if you’re connected to a computer or TV where the JBL app is inaccessible, having all the controls at your fingertips through the charging case becomes highly convenient.

In terms of size, both cases are compact and pocket-friendly, although the AirPods Pro 2 case is slimmer.

Charging methods differ between the two, with the AirPods Pro 2 relying on a Lightning cable and the Tour Pro 2 utilizing a Type-C cable.

However, both cases support wireless charging, so you won’t have to compromise on that convenient feature.

One distinguishing feature of the AirPods Pro 2 case is its tracking ability. The case itself is equipped with a speaker, enabling you to emit a high-pitched sound using your iPhone to help locate it.

Additionally, if you’re in the vicinity, you can even receive turn-by-turn directions to pinpoint the exact location of the case.

This tracking ability extends to the earbuds as well, allowing you to trigger a high-pitched sound if you need assistance in locating them.

It’s worth noting that this particular feature is exclusive to the AirPods Pro 2 and is not present in the JBL Tour Pro 2.

Earbud Controls

Now let’s discuss the controls for both the JBL Tour Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 2. The JBL Tour Pro 2 utilizes touch controls, while the AirPods Pro 2 employs squeeze controls.

Both methods work seamlessly and are designed to be user-friendly. However, there is a key distinction between the two when it comes to the available controls.

With the AirPods Pro 2, you have access to a wide range of controls, including volume adjustment. This comprehensive control scheme allows you to manage playback and volume levels and even control ambient sound settings directly from the earbuds.

JBL Tour Pro 2 vs Airpods Pro 2

On the other hand, the JBL Tour Pro 2 requires you to make choices regarding which controls you prioritize, as you can’t access everything simultaneously.

You’ll need to choose between playback controls, volume controls, and ambient sound control.

It’s important to note that this selective control setup has been a characteristic of JBL earbuds for some time, and it’s uncertain when they will introduce the option to access all controls at once.

Bluetooth Connection

One advantage of the JBL Tour Pro 2 in terms of Bluetooth is its multi-point connection capability. This feature allows you to connect the earbuds to two devices simultaneously.

In comparison, the AirPods Pro 2 excels in seamlessly switching between various Apple devices, which is a convenient feature for Apple ecosystem users.

If you frequently engage in multitasking across different devices, the multi-point connection of the JBL Tour Pro 2 could be an appealing factor to consider.

Battery Life

  • JBL Tour Pro 2:  Approximately 8 hours of battery life on a single charge with an additional 24 hours from the case.
  • AirPods Pro 2:  Approximately 6 hours of battery life on a single charge with an additional 30 hours from the case.

Water Resistance

  • JBL Tour Pro 2:  IPX5 rating (water-resistant).
  • AirPods Pro 2:  IPX4 rating (water-resistant).

Fit Comparison

  • The fit of both earbuds is similar, but the AirPods Pro 2 have a slight advantage due to their curved design that hugs the ear better.

Sound Quality

  • Both earbuds offer well-balanced sounds out of the box.
  • JBL Tour Pro 2:  Provides extensive sound customization options through the JBL app, allowing for personalized EQ presets.
  • AirPods Pro 2:  Limited sound customization options compared to the JBL Tour Pro 2.

Active Noise Cancellation

  • Both earbuds perform excellently in terms of noise cancellation.
  • AirPods Pro 2:  Offers stronger noise cancellation compared to the JBL Tour Pro 2.
  • JBL Tour Pro 2:  Features adaptive noise cancellation, adjusting the strength based on the surrounding noise level.

Transparency Mode

  • AirPods Pro 2:  Offers the most natural-sounding transparency mode.
  • JBL Tour Pro 2:  Also features a transparency mode specifically designed to reduce wind noise.

Call Quality

  • Both earbuds perform well in quiet environments.
  • JBL Tour Pro 2:  Microphone quality remains clear and understandable, but wind noise reduction is not as effective as AirPods Pro 2.
  • AirPods Pro 2:  Better at eliminating wind noise, but voice clarity may be slightly compromised.

JBL Tour Pro 2 vs Airpods Pro 2: Which Should You Buy?

When it comes to choosing between the JBL Tour Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 2, it ultimately depends on your priorities.

Here’s a summary of the key factors to consider:

Sound Quality:  If sound quality is your top priority, the JBL Tour Pro 2 is the way to go. With customizable EQ presets and a wide range of sound adjustments available through the JBL app, you can fine-tune the sound to your liking.

Noise Cancellation and Transparency:  For superior noise cancellation and a natural-sounding transparency mode, the AirPods Pro 2 takes the lead. They excel at blocking out external noise and providing a seamless listening experience.

Battery Life:  If you value longer battery life per charge, the JBL Tour Pro 2 offers approximately 8 hours compared to the AirPods Pro 2’s 6 hours. Both come with additional charging from their respective cases.

Water Resistance:  Both earbuds are water-resistant, with the JBL Tour Pro 2 having an IPX5 rating and the AirPods Pro 2 having an IPX4 rating. They can withstand sweat and light splashes, making them suitable for active individuals.

Fit:  While the fit is similar between the two, the AirPods Pro 2’s design, with its curved shape, provides a slightly better fit and comfort for everyday use.

Microphone Performance:  Both earbuds perform well in quiet environments, but the AirPods Pro 2 has an edge in wind noise reduction. However, the JBL Tour Pro 2 still delivers clear and understandable voice quality.

In the end, your decision should be based on which aspects are most important to you. If sound quality is your priority, the JBL Tour Pro 2 offers customization options. For excellent noise cancellation and transparency, the AirPods Pro 2 is a solid choice.

Airpods Pro 2nd Generation vs. Sennheiser Momentum TWS 3 vs. JBL Tour Pro 2 Review

Airpods Pro 2nd Generation vs. Sennheiser Momentum TWS 3 vs. JBL Tour Pro 2 Review

Airpods Pro 2 nd Generation vs. Sennheiser Momentum 3 vs. JBL Tour Pro 2 Review

This is one of those reviews that hardly needs an introduction. Today we’re going head-to-head-to-head with three of the most popular wireless buds: The Apple Airpods Pro 2 nd Generation, the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3 , and the new JBL Tour Pro 2 . After recently reviewing a $4,500 electrostatic headphone , there’s nothing like a good old wireless comparison review of some modern classics to bring me back down to earth, and perhaps back to my senses as well. Let’s see how these popular wireless buds fare against one another.

What’s In Their Boxes?

jbl tour pro tws vs airpods pro

Look and Fit

Sennheiser, Momentum True Wireless 3, TWS

Let’s start with how each of these are going to feel in your ears. The JBL Tour Pro 2 and the Airpods Pro 2 nd Generation have very similar fits, sitting at a shallow point at the opening of a listener’s ear canal. The Sennheiser Momentum 3, however, was designed with a longer nozzle, and finds a moderate depth in the ear canal that reaches deeper than either the JBL Tour Pro 2 or the Airpods Pro 2 nd Gen. In order from the most relaxed to the most snug fit, we have the Airpods, followed by the Tour Pro 2, and then the Momentum 3. While I find all to be conducive to working out and casual listening alike, the snug Momentum 3 might be the best workout pair, and the Aipods the best pair for more casual uses (this is only considering their fits).

Apple, Airpods Pro 2nd Generation

One feature on the Airpods Pro 2 that’s somewhat concerning is that the fit might be a little too shallow and relaxed; I had to use the largest ear tip size to have them sit securely in my ears despite usually needing only a medium ear tip size for nearly all other buds that I’ve worn. While this may not present an issue for most listeners, those with larger ear canals might struggle to get the fit quite right with the Airpods Pro 2 nd Generation.

When it comes to style and build quality, have a look for yourself. In general, all of the buds have pretty neutral and subtle presentations, and this category may not be the true deal breaker or maker for anyone choosing between these three. However, I can’t help myself from pointing out how much cheaper the Airpod Pro 2’s plastic build looks and feels in comparison to the sturdier and more fortified plastic that went into the Tour Pro 2 and Momentum True Wireless 3. There’s also something similar to be said for the different carrying/charging cases; the Airpods Pro 2’s case is composed of the same cheap plastic that went into the buds, and is glossy in a way that seems like a magnet for for smudge and scratch marks. The JBL Tour Pro 2 case is very impressive for its inclusion of metallic materials as well as a touch screen – but I’ll talk more about that shortly in another section. And finally, the Momentum 3 has a classy and sophisticated case that’s covered in a textured, mesh-like fabric.

JBL Tour Pro 2, Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3, Apple Airpods Pro Second Generation

So when it comes to general build quality, I’ll call it draw between the JBL’s and the Sennheiser’s. The Airpods Pro 2 are a step below in comparison.

Technical Specs

Noise cancellation.

The active noise cancellation heard in all three of the wireless buds is of a similar, standard quality, and ultimately it’s their passive cancellation qualities that set them apart from one another. I was surprised to find that the Airpods Pro 2 perform the best with passive cancellation, despite their loose and relaxed fit. The JBL Tour Pro 2 and Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3 still perform respectably in this category, but there seems to be a more effective isolating character present in the silicone used in the ear tips on the Airpod Pro 2 that reduced lower frequency sounds to a virtual silence – before I even activated ANC. The Airpods take first place here, followed by the Momentum 3’s, which are closely followed by the JBL Tour Pro 2.

Wireless Connections and Codecs

Note: I used a Pixel 6a for this review.

I have very little in the way of criticism for any of the buds in terms of the stability of their wireless connections. I’m pleased to report that once I followed the simple pairing instructions for each pair, I stayed connected for hours without a hiccup. Drop outs only occurred when I walked about 30 feet away from my phone and turned a corner into another room. I’m not too surprised as we’re dealing with Bluetooth 5.2 and 5.3 connections, which have pretty much always served me well enough for wireless audio purposes.

As for the wireless codecs we see in each pair of buds, the hierarchy is pretty simple: Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3 is #1 for its high quality AptX Adaptive codec. In second is the JBL Tour Pro 2, and in last is the Apple Airpods 2 nd Generation as it only offers the bare bones: AAC and SBC.

Battery Life

JBL and Sennheiser’s buds are neck and neck here with solid 8 and 7 hour bud battery lives respectively, while the Airpods Pro fall disappointingly short and below market average at 5 hours (ANC on). Reference the chart above.

Apps and Interfaces

For a third consecutive wireless performance category, the Apple Airpods Pro 2 nd Generation come in last. This is an easy call to make, as they lack the dedicated apps we see with the Sennheiser True Wireless 3 and the JBL Tour Pro 2. While you can optimize their tuning and ANC features on Apple devices when you first connect, that’s about the extent of their customizable features – notably, no EQ options.

The Sennheiser Smart Control app is pretty basic with a nice enough UI. You can check battery levels, make some adjustments to ANC, and apply an equalizer. While it’s nice to see some form of equalization offered, it’s the bare minimum: 3 bands, generalized as Bass, Mids, and Treble. It seems intended to be used only for minor, broad adjustments.

jbl tour pro tws vs airpods pro

The JBL Headphone app, however, is simply awesome. Aside from the basic features like checking battery levels and turning ANC on or off, you can run various tests to customize and improve your ANC experience, check whether or not the buds have a good seal in your left and right ears, precisely control transparency mode volume, and most importantly, use an equalizer that may be the most impressive and customizable in-app EQ I’ve ever seen. It seems to support up to 15 EQ points, which you can use for very accurate control over not just levels, but “Q” as well. This equalizer may be a little more appealing for the audio nerds out there – if you’re more of a casual listener, there are a number of diverse EQ presets you can choose from: Vocals, Bass, Jazz, etc. Also, something that may be a given at this point, you can name and save any of your favorite custom settings, or make and save adjustments to the default presets.

JBL Tour Pro 2, JBL Headphone App

The JBL Tour Pro 2 goes above and beyond with the touchscreen featured on its charging case, which simply acts as a quick menu for the features you can adjust in the app. Take a look at some of the pictures below.

JBL Tour Pro 2

It’s just one more level of convenience and customization that makes the JBL Tour Pro 2 the clear winner when it comes to features.

Sound Quality Comparisons

Apple Airpods Pro Second Generation

The Airpods Pro are souring on me in more ways than one. Sometimes wireless buds lack clarity but give you fun bass energy, or vice verse. The Airpods Pro are neither clear nor fun, and veiled/masked most tracks I listened to. They’re dull in the low end and higher frequencies alike, and seem oddly tented in the mid range. This gives vocals a somewhat “cupped” sound, and leaves meaty mid range parts (vocals and guitars, for example) competing with one another for presence. There are two places where I find their sonic performance adequate: a pleasant enough warmth in their high bass and low mids that can do drums and pianos justice, and a decent soundstage. Though I wouldn’t say that they sound wide , they’re fine in terms of their accuracy in spatial layering. At times, there’s an internal 3D quality to them that can situate parts of tracks as if they’re inside my head. Last bit of credit I’ll give to the Airpods is that their dull tuning is pretty inoffensive, and listeners don’t have to worry about shrill, painful, or “peaky” higher frequencies – in fact, they’ll probably be left wishing for something extra in the treble.

Honestly, the solution here is simple: listeners should be given an EQ option rather than getting stuck with this bizarre, lifeless tuning. But it’s Apple, and thus I doubt that will ever happen. Apple seems to have gone with the safest tuning they could imagine in order to sell Airpods to the entire world, and the result is a lowest common denominator that lacks vibrancy or excitement.

Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3

The Momentum 3’s balance is distinctly V-shaped; that is, boosted in its highs and lows and quietest in its mid range. Some people may have strong opinions on V-shaped balances, but the one heard in the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 3 is fun and well done, mostly avoiding the overly-quiet vocals that V-shaped frequency responses can sometime produce. A more balanced sound can be achieved by giving the mids a light boost on the in-app equalizer.

If big, fat and fun bass is what you’re after, the Sennheiser Momentum TWS 3 might be your best choice of three pairs. While the JBL Tour Pro 2 can pack a tight, punchy bass, it can’t quite deliver the wall of rumbling bass energy heard in the Momentum TWS 3. If you’re a bass-addicted degenerate, you can take things to another level by turning on the bass boost setting in the Smart Control app. While this setting was a step overboard for my ears, bigger bass heads than myself are sure to enjoy it. A quality that makes its low end particularly appealing is its avoidance of slow, floaty, or muddy bass that’s commonly heard in bass-heavy wireless buds.

In terms of layering and instrument separation, its spatial character is mostly limited to a 2 dimensional, left-right linearity. This is fairly common for wireless audio, and I find that its flat sound stage is nonetheless well done for what it is, avoiding congestion and clutter. The cleanly divided balance picks up most of the tab, keeping the overall performance articulate even in the midst of its throbbing bass energy.

While the Momentum 3 has a nice clarity all through out the frequency spectrum that is sufficient for a wide array of genres, pop and electronic seem to mesh best with its bass-centric balance.

JBL Tour Pro 2

If you’re after a pair of wireless buds that are bassy but more genuinely eclectic than the Sennheiser Momentum TWS 3, the JBL Tour Pro 2 is a very worthy option. JBL products usually go for Harman targets in their tuning; for those who don’t know what that is, it’s an ongoing project that uses scientific methods in pursuit of the most “universal” tuning – one that sounds best for the greatest number of people. In other words, it’s the smarter version of what Apple is trying to do with their Airpod tuning, and it works a lot better.

It’s somewhat difficult to definitively say what the JBL Tour Pro 2 really sounds like, as it’s by far the most customizable wireless bud on this list – and maybe off this list, for that matter. Going by the “JBL Tour Pro 2” EQ preset, however, seems like a fair way to judge it.

Bass comes through fast and punchy with a mid-bass focus. Subs can be dialed in moderately to a nice effect, but if taken too far, can result in a slower bass with somewhat muddy results. This wasn’t an issue for me, as my preferred sub-bass levels sat just right with the Tour Pro 2 . Likely my favorite parts of the balance reside in the buds’ mid range, as vocals sounded detailed and natural, absent of the pillowy and awkward fundamentals I heard in the Airpods Pro 2 nd Generation, and more present than they are in the Sennheiser Momentum TWS 3. Higher frequencies are perfectly present, but take on more of a supporting role that keeps the overall balance informed and realistic. If you want a brighter balance from the buds, they respond to EQ in their higher frequencies surprisingly well and avoid plasticky timbres, so long as you don’t boost everything above 2 kHz with a fat finger.

Besides being compatible with the widest array of genres than any other bud on this list, the Tour Pro 2 surprised me with its layering and soundstage as well. The right tracks were able to produce a genuine depth in their stage, something I’m not usually expecting from wireless units in this price range. Combined with a clean and natural balance, this modest 3D quality makes the JBL Tour Pro 2 the most articulate and detailed bud on this list – and honestly, my personal favorite.

Best wireless buds

So I’ll wrap things up with this: if you’re primarily a pop or electronic listener, there’s a fun yet clean forcefulness offered in the low end of Sennheiser Momentum TWS 3 that might give you what you’re after. If you’re a more eclectic listener, the JBL Tour Pro 2’s exceptional versatility and articulation makes it a very appealing option. As for the Airpods: why? Just why? Apple is woefully behind the curve at this point, and legitimate audio companies like JBL and Sennheiser – and plenty of others – are making vastly superior wireless buds in the same price tier. Get yourself something that offers you the most, rather than choosing a name you’re the most familiar with.

JBL Tour Pro+ review: Another excellent AirPods Pro alternative

Simon Cohen

“With tons of features and great sound, the Tour Pro+ are easy to recommend.”
  • Elegant design
  • Very good sound quality
  • Excellent call quality
  • Good battery life
  • Hands-free voice assistants
  • Awkward controls
  • Mediocre noise canceling
  • No wake-word support in iOS

Looking for a set of noise-canceling true wireless earbuds that don’t look like small golf tees protruding from your ears? JBL’s $200 Tour Pro+ are your latest option. They’re slickly designed, compact, and they let you speak to Alexa or Google Assistant without needing to tap an earbud — a trick that even Apple’s AirPods can’t manage.

  • What’s in the box?

Comfort, controls, and connections

Sound quality, battery life, noise cancellation and transparency, voice assistant access, call quality.

But do the rest of the Tour Pro+’s features measure up, and should you add them to your shortlist? Let’s find out.

  • Did your AirPods Pro noise cancellation just get worse?
  • Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4 debut with lossless audio, but skip the spatial trend
  • JBL’s $200 Live 3 earbuds get the Tour Pro 2’s touchscreen charging case

What’s in the box?

JBL’s soundbar team has definitely read the sustainable packaging memo — the new JBL Bar 5.0 Multibeam is a perfect example of how to make a box and its contents fully recyclable. But apparently, the earbuds team missed that email. The Tour Pro+ come in a heavily coated box with magnet closures and lots of hard-to-recycle foam and plastic.

Inside, you’ll find the earbuds, their charging case, a USB-C charging cord, five sizes of eartips, two sizes of wing tips, and several printed quick start guides.

JBL’s Tour lineup, which consists of the Tour Pro+ earbuds and the Tour One ANC headphones, possesses an understated yet sophisticated design. Satin-finish plastics, subtle logos, and just a few high-polish accents give the Tour Pro+ a very high-end vibe.

The earbuds use touch-sensitive surfaces, so there is very little to interrupt their clean lines. Size-wise, they’re similar to Jabra’s Elite 75t , sticking out from your ear just enough to make them easy to insert and remove. An IPX5 rating offers very good protection from sweat and water (just don’t immerse them).

Their charging case, which can be charged wirelessly or via the included USB-C cable, isn’t quite as compact as the AirPods Pro, but it’s still highly pocketable. The lid opens and closes smoothly and the hinge keeps the lid open until you’re ready to close it — something many cases can’t claim. The case can stand vertically if you’re careful, but it’s really meant to lie flat on its back, which lets it charge wirelessly while also exposing the charging status LED on the bottom, next to the USB-C port.

The Tour Pro+ snap in and out of their charging sockets with ease thanks to their slightly angled position, but take care when re-docking them: They can sometimes fail to align perfectly with their charging contacts. Each socket has its own LED indicator so it’s easy to tell if something’s not quite right.

I found that the default medium cone-style silicone ear tips were perfect for me. Once nestled in my ear, the Tour Pro+ were very comfortable and secure. Going for a jog or pavement or pounding away on a treadmill shouldn’t budge them at all.

The Tour Pro+ come with a tiny set of wing tips installed, though that term seems inappropriate. They’re really more like mini-fins. But regardless of what you call them, they didn’t do much for me in terms of extra stability. I think they’re designed to fit just under the antihelix — that fold of cartilage in the outer ear — but I guess my antihelixes are too big (weirdest brag ever). If they actively get in the way or they’re uncomfortable, you can swap them out with flat silicone bands.

Bass response is excellent without being overbearing, and there’s plenty of detail through the midrange.

Inside the JBL Headphones app, which you will definitely want to download to get the best from the Tour Pro+, there’s a fit test that helps you figure out if you’re using the best ear tips for your ears. It’s worth doing: A poor fit will compromise both the active noise cancellation (ANC) and sound quality.

Though I still prefer physical buttons, the Tour Pro+ has very responsive touch controls, which provide audible feedback tones when you tap them. I wish all touch controls did this — there’s nothing worse than not knowing if your tap was recognized or not.

Unfortunately, JBL has somewhat kneecapped these great touch controls by enforcing a very limited set of customizations. Instead of letting users assign one function per gesture per earbud, each earbud must be assigned a function “group.” The playback control group gives you play/pause and track skip forward/back. The volume control group lets you turn the volume up or down. Voice assistant lets you trigger your chosen assistant with a gesture (more on this later), and ambient sound control lets you switch from ANC modes and toggle TalkThru on and off.

The ambient sound control group might be the most confusing of them all. With a single tap, you can switch between ANC, ambient sound, and off (no ANC or ambient). But a double tap lets you turn TalkThru on and off. Since TalkThru and ambient mode are almost indistinguishable, I think JBL should have simplified this, making the single tap all you need to switch between ANC and ambient.

You can have any two of these groups active at once, which means choices must be made. If you want playback control (and who doesn’t?) that means you need to decide which of the other four matter most. Want to control ANC and volume? You can, but only if you give up playback control. These are not choices we should be forced to make.

Built-in wear sensors automatically pause music when you pop an earbud out and play when you put it back in. The feature works really well, pausing and playing quickly in response to changes, but oddly, it only worked on the left earbud. You can also disable this in the Headphones app.

Calling on the Tour Pro+ is very good. My voice was clear as a bell.

You can choose to use just one earbud at a time, but make sure you assign the controls you need to the earbud you’re using. Don’t worry about call answer/end — these functions work on both sides, regardless of which control group you choose.

Bluetooth connection quality is excellent. Indoors, I was able to put three stories between my iPhone 11 and the Tour Pro+ without dropping the signal, and that will likely translate into very good outdoor performance too.

Out of the box, and with the right size of ear tips installed, the Tour Pro+ have a very balanced sound signature. Bass response is excellent without being overbearing, and there’s plenty of detail through the midrange. Highs are a little muted, but still very enjoyable.

But the JBL Headphones app really allows you to dramatically alter how the Tour Pro+ behave, with several presets and one custom option. My favorite is the Club One EQ, which boosts bass and treble a lot and gives a smaller bump to the midranges. It really woke these earbuds up, increasing the energy and seemingly expanding the already fairly generous soundstage. Vocals received the biggest boost, with much better clarity.

The Tour Pro+ aren’t going to shake your teeth loose with their bass — if you want that, try the JBL Reflect Mini NC — but the low-end is warm, resonant, and more than punchy enough to let you enjoy bass-forward tracks like Billie Eilish’s Bad Guy or Hans Zimmer’s Time .

They’re better balanced than Jabra’s similarly-priced Elite Active 75t and even compare favorably to Sennheiser’s CX400 BT for overall sound quality.

JBL claims six hours of playback per charge for the Tour Pro+ earbuds and I found that to be almost exactly what I got when playing music at 50% volume. If you turn ANC off, you should get eight hours, but I didn’t test this. That handily beats Apple’s AirPods Pro (4.5 hours with ANC on).

The charging case holds three full recharges, giving you a total of 24 or 32 hours before needing to find a wireless (or wired) charging spot.

Whether in Ambient Aware or TalkThru modes, it was easy to listen to conversations and stay aware of traffic.

Speaking of wireless charging, I found the charging case was very picky about its location on my charging mat. If it wasn’t dead-center, it wouldn’t charge and even then, my charging mat occasionally lost its connection. That’s not something I’ve run into very often, so it’s possible it was just my particular review unit.

ANC on the Tour Pro+ is calibrated heavily in favor of low-frequency sounds. It works best for counteracting engine and tire sounds from traffic, or the vibrations of machinery that might work their way through walls.

I found that higher frequencies, like the sound of a bathroom fan, weren’t blocked out as effectively, and there’s no way to adjust the intensity of the ANC feature to increase the amount of noise it deals with.

JBL has packed so many features into the JBL Headphones app, I’d say it’s mandatory.

It’s what I’d call a general-purpose ANC. It takes the edge off, but doesn’t really go for that cone-of-silence effect. If that’s what you want, both the Jabra Elite Active 75t and the Sony WF-SP800N proved more capable of blocking a full range of frequencies.

I do like the fact that JBL includes what it calls a “silent now” mode: Hold the two touch surfaces for five seconds and the Tour Pro+ keep ANC engaged, but turn off Bluetooth so you can get some extra peace and quiet without killing your battery.

Transparency (or ambient mode) works really well. Whether in Ambient Aware or TalkThru modes, it was easy to listen to conversations and stay aware of traffic.

One of the coolest features on the Tour Pro+ is their ability to not only work with both Alexa and Google Assistant (there are several earbud models that already do this), but also give you wake-word access to them so you don’t have to continually reach for an earbud.

Just say, “Hey Google,” or “Alexa,” and your chosen assistant is at the ready, waiting for you to speak a command.

You have to choose which one you want as your active assistant in the Headphones app, but switching from one to the other only takes a few seconds.

I found both assistants responded effortlessly in a variety of situations.

There is one very unfortunate caveat: Wake-word access only works on Android devices at the moment.

If you want wake-word access on an iPhone, you’ll need Apple’s AirPods or the Amazon Echo Buds .

Whether on a busy street or in a quiet location, calling on the Tour Pro+ is very good. Some occasional very loud sounds would overpower my voice, but for the most part, it was clear as a bell and surprisingly full-sounding.

When indoors or in a quiet outdoor location, I suspect your callers won’t even know you’re using a set of earbuds for your calls.

Normally headphone apps don’t do a whole lot, but JBL has packed so many features into the JBL Headphones app, I’d say it’s mandatory for Tour Pro+ users. It enables:

  • Find my earbuds
  • Custom controls
  • Eartip fit test
  • Battery life indicators
  • Voice assistant selection
  • Audio mode selection
  • My Alarm (which lets you set an amount of time for music to play before switching the earbuds to Silent Now mode for sleeping)

With the Tour Pro+, JBL delivers a well-priced, elegantly designed set of true wireless earbuds. They sound great, have very good battery life and call quality, and their wake-word access for voice assistants (on Android) is a rare and helpful feature.

Their mediocre ANC and awkward control options are drawbacks, but definitely not deal-breakers.

Is there a better alternative?

I’m hard-pressed to find a set of true wireless earbuds at the same price that goes toe-to-toe with the JBL Tour Pro+ in terms of features and quality, except for maybe JBL’s own Club Pro+. They’re the same price, and while they lack wake-word access to assistants, some folks will prefer their more bass-heavy sound signature.

For a more workout-friendly option, Sony’s $199 WF-SP800N have great battery life, great sound, and better ANC than the Tour Pro+. But they’re not as good for phone calls and lack wireless charging and wake-word assistant access. However, they’re compatible with both Alexa and Google Assistant.

JBL’s own $150 Reflect Mini NC are also solid contenders for fitness fanatics. Sound quality is once again more bass-heavy, but these earbuds share many of the same features as the Tour Pro+.

How long will they last?

JBL builds very good products and the Tour Pro+ are no exception. High-quality materials and excellent fit and finish abound. They come with a one-year warranty from JBL and I expect they’ll last for many years of use.

Should you buy them?

Yes. Despite their weird controls, the Tour Pro+ are a feature-rich set of great-sounding ANC earbuds.

The new PistonBuds Pro Q30 from 1More boast AirPods-like looks along with active noise cancellation (ANC) and spatial audio, but it's their rock-bottom $50 price that stands out. As part of the launch, 1More has dropped the price to $40 for a limited time, making these wireless earbuds even more attractive. The PistonBuds Pro Q30 are available in white/gold or black/gold combos.

In the past, 1More has favored a stemless design for its PistonBuds lineup, but this time the company has opted for a stem-based approach. If you've ever tried PistonBuds in the past and found them a poor fit, this new shape might be a better option.

What should it cost to buy a set of wireless noise-canceling earbuds with in-demand features like wireless charging, hi-res audio, and Bluetooth Multipoint? According to Earfun, the answer is $80 -- the price of its Earfun Free Pro 3. You can buy them starting October 30 on Amazon.

As the latest generation of Earfun's Free Pro model, the Free Pro 3 goes all-in on new features while retaining the ultra-compact shape and style that sets the Free Pro apart from larger earbuds. The headlining feature for some Android users is Qualcomm's Snapdragon Sound compatibility, which brings hi-res audio support via the aptX Adaptive Bluetooth codec and higher-quality voice transmission thanks to aptX Voice.

It's been a little while since we've seen a proper refresh of Apple's AirPods line. And given that we're in the back quarter of 2023 it should come as no surprise that word is starting to trickle out about new products potentially coming in 2024. Those words come by way of Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who cites unnamed sources detailing changes ahead in the new year.

The JBL Tour Pro 2's touchscreen is a winner. We enjoyed using it and so will most of your train carriage. There are lots of settings on offer here and the JBL app is fun to use. We thought ANC was pretty good and enjoyed listening to them, but they don't feel worth the price tag and some genres definitely sound better than others.

Jbl tour pro 2: two-minute review.

JBL is famed for its rock-solid audio products, the kind of shiny but affordable gems which reveal themselves as diamonds in the rough more often than not and almost always, always sound excellent for the money. So what happens when the company veers off its successfully navigated low-cost path to go all-in on a flagship set of all-guns-blazing, active noise-cancelling, uniquely screen-toting earbuds? Is our best noise-cancelling earbuds guide about to welcome a new arrival?

The JBL Tour Pro 2 sit above (way above) the brand’s other earbuds – including the splendid JBL Live Pro 2 – which feature possibly the best active noise cancellation at the level I've ever experienced. But the huge upgrades are easy to see from the off; there's a whacking great color touch-screen on the front of the case for starters.

This, dear reader, is a thing of beauty. It is delightful. It's fun, it lets you accept calls with ease (how many times have we tried our best to touch the correct earpiece in the right way, succeeding only in hanging up on our friendly caller?) and it provides simple, scrollable access to ANC profiles, alarms, spatial audio and other perks. During daily use, we find ourselves playing with EQ profiles and useful extras which might have seemed unworthy of the hassle had they been squirrelled away in an app, requiring our phone. Then again, the screen did lose its sparkle, so to speak, after a few days.

Because of said screen, we worried that the battery-life might be a little on the anaemic side. Not so – the total claim of up to 50 hours of playtime (or 30 hours with ANC activated) and a very good 10 in just the buds themselves before they need charging stood up to scrutiny. Fast charge means 10 minutes plugged in will get you five hours of playtime too, which is a smart trick.

So off they go to our best true wireless earbuds guide then? We love the design; we love all of the sound tests and special customizations – including Personi-fi, which is one of the most thorough audio tests within a set of earbuds we've taken to date. We also think the JBL Tour Pro 2 sound good and ANC works well. But that's it. We didn't find the sound stellar, and we wouldn't rate the ANC as fantastic.

Listening to music with the JBL Tour Pro 2 is a pleasant experience for the most part. Instrumental music, jazz, easy listening and soulful tracks sounded smooth. But bassy tracks, rock music and even some vocals didn't sit well with us. Vocals, at times, were a little tinny – especially with the built-in EQ profiles, which we didn't enjoy using – and it was hard to pick out the detail in powerful instrumental tracks, making for a muddy listen at times.

To us it feels a little like JBL nailed it with the JBL Live Pro 2 and tried to go all out with the Tour Pro 2 – slapping a screen on the case, bumping up the specs, improving the sound – when really they're excellent buds and at times it feels like the Tour Pro 2 are a little overcooked somehow.

Don't get us wrong here, the JBL Tour Pro 2 are good. In fact, if you don't have many top-performing buds to compare them to like we do, you might find them great. But are they premium price tag, top-of-the-range great? We're not sure.

JBL Tour Pro 2: price and release date

  • Launched January 2023
  • Coming to the US in Spring 2023
  • Cost $249.95 / £220 / AU$350

The JBL Tour Pro 2 launched in January 2023 in most regions and will be coming to the US in Spring 2023. The buds cost $249.95 / £220 / AU$350 in either champagne or black finishes.

This price puts them slap bang into competition with the likes of Apple's AirPods Pro 2 ($249 / £249 / AU$399) and the Bose QuietComfort 2 ($299 / £279 / AU$429), some of the best true wireless earbuds you can buy today, a category in which the Sony WF-1000XM4 Wireless Earbuds also feature among the best, at $279.99 / £250 / AU$449.95 – although this particular set of earbuds is now available for quite a bit less than the original MSRP.

In case it needs to be mentioned, this pricing puts the JBL Tour Pro 2 out of contention for our best budget earbuds buying guide, where the Cambridge Audio Melomania 1 Plus , Beats Studio Buds and Lypertek PurePlay Z3 2.0 rule the roost (although they aren't as fully featured of course).

For this money – and toting the smart screen no other audio outfit has offered to date – the JBL Tour Pro 2 are on to a winner, provided the sound is up to snuff.

JBL Tour Pro 2: features

  • Excellent app adds scope to tailor the case
  • Sound and fit tests add value
  • ANC efficacy is easily beaten by AirPods Pro

You can customize the sound by telling the buds which sonic profile sounds best to you, in the Personi-fi 2.0 software. It starts out with an environment noise check (you need to be in a relatively quiet spot), then a wearing status check (you need to have a good seal betwixt ear canal and earbud). It then plays you nine chirpy sounds per ear, and you remove your finger when the sound is imperceptible. We take this test twice, and receive a different pictorial result each time. That said, the second time, the sound augmentation did feel more to our liking.

However, other members of the team weren't as impressed and there was no discernible difference in the audio sample that plays after the test, no matter how many times they tried.

Still, we're not done. The Ear Canal Test (which must be done in a noisy environment) plays another music clip. After it, you can relax as the hybrid True Adaptive ANC does the rest. We note a slight hiss after completion, but toggling 'Leakage Compensation' and 'Ear Canal Compensation' within the 'Customize ANC' tab largely nixes it. We sit under an office heater at work and find it is quashed by the Tour Pro 2 ANC, but certain low-level sounds (cars passing outside, heeled footsteps on concrete) do creep in. Switch to the Apple AirPods Pro 2 and it's a different story – the bottom drops out of the room. With the Tour Pro 2, low-level sounds are diminished, but still, we can hear some extraneous background noise.

The six-mic setup does promote crystal-clear audio during our tests – and the advanced built-in voice recognition can react to your voice, pause music and enable Ambient Aware, then resume the tunes once your conversation is over. This is really good, (it can be set to low, mid or high, depending on how loudly you and your colleagues speak) and we also find call-handling a breeze. But those are just two of a slew of perks, including an EQ tab with five different presets (or create your own), Spatial Sound profiles for music, movies or games, 'smart' audio and video modes, SilentNow (which aims to create a no-music silent bubble by turning on ANC but disconnecting Bluetooth – ideal for naps, because it can be set on a timer with an alarm at the end), Personal Sound Amplification (which can amplify situational sound from your surroundings – and between each ear) adding a volume limit and a Find My Buds feature, if one goes missing. All of this, and we've yet to talk about the features afforded by the case… All in good time.

Before that, the buds: they feature a capacitive touch panel at the very top of the stem. You can switch noise cancelling on and off with a tap on the left stem, double tap for TalkThru and tap and hold to trigger Siri. All of these are customizable – at least to a point. You can’t decide which gestures do what, but you can select which gets priority on each bud. If you want on-ear volume control (which most of us do) you have to sacrifice either ambient sound control or playback options, which is a shame – but a relatively small gripe.

We need to stress that the case helps in a big way, but we do think this experience could be subjective. The screen built into it never fails to acquiesce to our taps first time, quickly becoming a joy and a pleasure we wonder how we ever lived without. For example, we find ourselves scrolling straight to the volume tile (you swipe across) to alter volume rather than even attempt to use the buds. It's a brilliant addition – and within the JBL Headphones app, you can alter the screen brightness, choose one of five screensavers, toggle on message notifications and select which of seven further feature shortcuts you'd like to have access to on-screen. We toggle off SilentNow, since it's a feature we'll rarely use (we don't get to sleep on the job!) but for some that may be a priority. It's also very handy that notifications appear on this screen too – it really is like a smartwatch on your charging case – like calls and messages.

Although we were excited by the case – and do think it could be game-changing for some – it's worth mentioning we did use it less and less once the novelty had worn off. If you find yourself forever opening apps that control your earbuds or headphones, it'll make a big difference. If you don't need to tweak settings much, it may be more of a gimmick.

JBL Tour Pro 2: sound quality

  • Easy-listening, jazz and instrumental genres sound good
  • Not for those who prioritize detail and dynamic breadth
  • Doesn't have the punch or power we were expecting

These buds sound good, they really do. But they're not fantastic and that's what we expected with their price tag. Having said that, with lots of settings we did find a sound we enjoyed and think they definitely suit some genres more than others.

We experimented with the different EQ profiles on offer and settled on leaving these off in favor of Harman's revered curve (the company's own heavily researched target sound signature, said to produce the best sound quality that most listeners prefer). That's because we found the EQ sound profiles to be a bit of a disappointment, especially vocals which were tinny and studio, which sounded far away. We didn't notice much of a difference in the others.

We most enjoyed the JBL Tour Pro 2 for easy listening and soulful tracks. Proxima Parada's Musta Been a Ghost was smooth and the balance felt perfect here. The same can be said for instrumental and ambient music, like Geoff Barrow and Ben Salisbury's score for Devs. We like to listen to that while working and it provided an enjoyable soundtrack to our day. Having said that, instrumental music only sounded good to a point. Hildur Guðnadóttir's Joker soundtrack lacked the detail and the power we're used to from other buds. We had just been using the LG Tone Free T90Q buds so compared the two and the LGs felt more expansive, more powerful and enjoyable to listen with.

It's worth mentioning that spoken word sounded great and, strangely enough, the not-totally-perfect-but-fine ANC coupled with this fact made these good buds to wear outside if you like walking and listening to audiobooks and podcasts. We don't like feeling completely isolated from the world when we're listening on-the-move, so these did seem like the best of both worlds.

Tracks with more bass or rock music didn't sound as rich or powerful as we'd have liked. For example the 2023 Remaster of Iggy & The Stooges' Search and Destroy was a little muddied and we couldn't differentiate between instruments and vocals as much as we'd have liked, meaning there was an overall flat effect. Likewise, the Dead Weather's Treat Me Like Your Mother lacked detail, resulting in a muddied listen that wasn't altogether pleasant.

Wondering if this was just something to do with rock music than the buds themselves, we listened to BANKS' Waiting Game and found the vocals more tinny than we expected – that's usually such a smooth listen – and the bass was powerful, but it had a fuzzy-sounding effect. Look, all of these examples sounded objectively fine, but we're used to trialling a pair of new earbuds at this level and being blown away by the new things we discover from our favorite tracks, that didn't happen here. Instead, we were underwhelmed.

If you want buds for music while you're working or podcasts, we like these. If you're after audiophile quality or like powerful tracks – whether that's classical or rock – we think you might be disappointed here.

JBL Tour Pro 2: design

  • Smart case is really fun to use
  • Battery life is surprisingly good
  • Some will struggle to achieve a seal

As with Apple's AirPods range, the Honor Earbuds 3 Pro , Huawei Freebuds Pro 2 and Nothing Ear (1) to name just a few, the JBL Tour Pro 2 sport little stems. Despite thinking that the driver housings look a little on the bulky side at first glance, some of the team with smaller ears downsize once and find the earpieces fit well very little fiddling. That said, those with larger ears may struggle – only three ear tips are provided, and one of the team couldn't achieve a seal good enough to pass any of the fit tests (more on these in a moment) even with the largest set, despite several minutes of adjusting them. At this level, a few more ear tip size options – and in different materials – is desirable.

JBL has added its own more angular, look-at-me take on the AirPods' ice-white, no-sharp-edges design though. Here, there are lips and notches in various materials and finishes, including the rubberised driver housings, matte top plate and mirror-finish accents on the stems. There's even a little 'TOUR' embellishment written on the circumference of each bud, as well as JBL's branding on the tails. These are every inch JBL's top-tier offering and the design choices reflect that.

Let's bypass the touchscreen for a second. The underside of the case hasn't been forgotten. This has a rubberized portion which adds traction and means you won't inadvertently swipe it off your desk – a small detail, but the gestural among us will love it.

The 10mm dynamic drivers represent a significant leap up from the 6.8mm drivers found in the JBL Tour Pro+, and they're listed as Bluetooth 5.3 LE audio-compatible, too. So, it seems a shame that no higher-resolutions codecs are supported – no LDAC, no aptX (standard, HD, Low Latency or otherwise).

With up to 50 hours of playtime (or 30 hours with ANC activated) and a very good 10 in just the buds themselves before they need charging, they also trounce most of the competition at the level for stamina. For comparison, the Sony XM4s have 8 hours in each bud, but only 16 in the case, and the latest Apple AirPods Pro 2 offer 6 hours in the buds and a further 30 hours in the case. Fast charge means 10 minutes plugged in will get you five hours of playtime too, but the case can also charge wirelessly.

The JBL Tour Pro 2 have an IPX5 water and dust-proof rating. Interestingly, the case itself has a rating of IPX2 (just make sure you close it). So the whole package is splash-proof, but not waterproof. Many earbuds at the level offer at least an IPX4 certification (which means they'll survive a sweaty gym session) but certain options go much further. The Jabra Elite 7 Active carry an IP57 rating, which means they're dustproof and can be submerged in water at up to one meter in depth, for up to 30 minutes, and survive.

There’s a feature in the JBL Headphones app called 'Check My Best Fit', which plays a short clip of music to ensure you’ve got a good seal in each ear. It's no slouch either, telling us to alter the bud in our troublesomely-shaped right ear until we're good to go. We pass this test, but some of the team fail time and time again. To speak plainly, this is why we removed a star from the design score – if they don't fit, it's impossible to get the best sound from them. And that's not the end of the story when it comes to aural tests! We'll get to grips with further features below.

  • Design score: 4/5

JBL Tour Pro 2: value

  • The screen is currently unique – and thus, hard to quantify
  • Myriad extra fit and hearing tests
  • Audio and ANC can be beaten at the level

We don't hate these buds, far from it. If you want that case, you can't currently buy anything like it from anyone else. It's almost akin to adding a smartwatch to the front of an earbuds case. And if you're wondering whether it's fun to use, it is. We really enjoy the unique feature but know this is bound to be a matter of personal taste. The novelty did wear off after a few days.

Despite some of our issues, the JBL Tour Pro 2 also sound good and we're always singing the praises of JBL's plethora of settings within its user-friendly app. But for us it's a question of value. Are they worth the premium price tag? Unless you're completely swayed by the screen, we think you can find a better sound and fit elsewhere.

Even noise cancellation, which we enjoyed, can be bested. The Bose QuietComfort Earbuds 2 , Sony WF-1000XM4 and AirPods Pro 2 outshine the JBL Tour Pro with relative ease – and although those first two options are priced close-to and a little more than the JBL proposition, the Sonys are now quite a bit cheaper.

  • Value score: 3/5

JBL Tour Pro 2: should you buy them?

Buy them if….

You want that look-at-me smart screen Rarely have we looked at an earbuds case and been so wowed. You'll love pulling it out of your pocket and amazing your friends.

You care about calls, especially when commuting The fact that you can just tap the touchscreen on the case to accept phone calls saves a lot of effort (and stress), especially when your phone's in your bag and you struggle with on-ear touch controls.

You like a whole host of customizations If you like to know for certain whether your buds fit correctly and the hearing tests sound interesting (they certainly are) the JBL Tour Pro 2 remain a compelling option.

Don't buy them if…

You want the best sound money can buy JBL's top-tier buds will not satisfy the audiophile. Want the best sound quality possible for this money? You will find better performances from Apple and Sony (see below for this).

You don’t like a "toothbrush head" design Many wireless earbuds have a stem these days, (thanks to Apple's ubiquitous AirPods) but plenty don’t, so shop around if you want a more rounded or teardrop-shaped style.

You want the ultimate ANC experience The ANC here is acceptable, but look to the AirPods Pro 2 or the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds 2 if you want the best noise-nixing earbuds on the market.

If our JBL Tour Pro 2 review has you considering other, non screen-toting true wireless earbuds, then take a look at these three alternatives.

Image

Apple AirPods Pro 2 Own an iPhone? Want the best ANC experience from a set of earbuds? Look to the AirPods Pro 2 – their H1 chip allows you to seamlessly pair them with other Apple devices and the difference in terms of 'blank canvas' active noise nixing is quite startling.

Image

Sony WF-1000XM4 The Sony XM4s are at the top of our best earbuds list for a reason. Sound performance and noise cancelling here is excellent, as is call quality. And although their launch price was high, they're now available for far less than the JBL Tour Pro 2.

Image

Bose QuietComfort 2 The master of noise-cancellation tech is back on top here, taking the competition right to Sony – and these second-gen. buds sound even better than before. Battery life is nothing to write home about (at only six hours from the buds) but still, for similar money to the JBL Tour Pro 2, these are arguably the best noise-cancelling true wireless earbuds around right now.

Image

Audio-Technica ATH-SQ1TW If you don’t have top-tier JBL kind of money, consider the minimal, cubist look of these Audio-Technica buds that deliver great sound. Unfortunately, there’s no ANC (or screen), but the price is fantastic at only $79/£79/AU$129…

Pocket-lint

Jbl live pro+ tws review: airpods pro competition at a cut-rate price.

These in-ear 'buds from JBL are a pleasure to use and comfortable wear - a great alternative if you don't want to splash out on AirPods Pro.

We're getting used to pointing it out, but the wireless earbud market really has turned into a seriously fierce battleground. If you're happy to spend over a couple of hundred then you're into a world of high-quality products that standout from each other, but below that mark things get pretty crowded.

  • Best true wireless earbuds rated: Wire-free Bluetooth audio

JBL's Live Pro+ TWS earbuds don't look especially unique, but we're really impressed by how they feel to use day-to-day, and the features they offer for a price that undercuts the likes of Apple's superb AirPods Pro . JBL's 'buds might not quite match Apple's on quality, but they're closer than they have any right to be at this price.

Our quick take

We really enjoyed wearing JBL's wireless earbuds for a couple of weeks. There's a completeness to the package it offers that belies its asking price. You get loads of control and customisation, along with solid active noise-cancelling (ANC) to go with a soundscape that's perfectly impressive on its own.

These 'buds look nice, feel great, and are reliable for long listening sessions - which is a winning combination in our experience. There are some very minor hiccoughs and the earbuds' sound quality probably could have blown our socks off a little more, but this feels like a fairly-priced package that'll find a loyal audience.

JBL Live Pro+ TWS - 4.0 / 5

Jbl live pro+ tws.

  • Available in white, black, beige and pink
  • IPX4 waterproofing
  • Stem design

The Live Pro+ TWS doesn't look like anything particularly groundbreaking on the surface - which is a good thing in many ways. They're in the now long-established family of earbuds that feature a protruding stem, and are pretty standard within that group.

JBL Live Pro+ review: AirPods Pro competition at a cut-rate price photo 3

Whichever colour you pick, you'll get a uniform matte finish with a slightly contrasting shiny stem, but it's all nice and understated. These don't draw attention at all when they're in your ear, which will likely be a good thing in most people's eyes.

  • Best workout headphones: The best exercise earphones to buy

They slip magnetically into a similarly generic case, of the same colour, which is nice and small and so easily pocketable. The case nice and light and passes the test of being satisfying to snap closed.

Three indicator lights on the case's front let you know battery levels, although they're nestled alongside four other notches that make it more confusing to read the lights - tiny design touches like that can matter.

JBL Live Pro+ review: AirPods Pro competition at a cut-rate price photo 4

There are also an impressive array of touch controls on each earbud, which have normal defaults like play/pause and volume control - but can be fully customised in JBL's app, which is a welcome touch. These work well and promptly, although we found it took a little while to get used to exactly what gesture prompted each outcome.

Nonetheless, overall JBL has done a really decent job here, with sturdiness to the earbuds themselves that makes them feel they could survive a few drops. More to the point, we found them genuinely comfortable to wear once we selected the right size of tip. That included long listening sessions, and isn't something that every earbud we try can match.

Sound quality

  • Adaptive noise-cancelling (ANC)
  • 11 mm dynamic drivers
  • Ambient modes

For most of us, how a set of earbuds sounds is more important than how they look - although it can be a close-run thing! Thankfully, we can report similarly impressive results on the sonic front from the Live Pro+ TWS.

Using them straight out of the box, as they're tuned, you get a nicely balanced sound that isn't too reliant on bass and does a good job genre-hopping. Rock sounds full-throated, but twirling folk isn't too delicate for its soundstage, either.

JBL Live Pro+ review: AirPods Pro competition at a cut-rate price photo 2

You can change up the equaliser (EQ) settings should you want some more control, which can give noticeable bonuses under certain conditions. In general we found the earbuds a really enjoyable partner for listening sessions. Volume's not an issue, either, as they can get plenty loud.

That's also helped by the on-board adaptive noise-cancelling (ANC), which has three levels of assistance to pick from - Everyday, Travel and Active. Each offers a slightly different level and sort of cancelling, but Everyday is likely to be your default option to help dull out the outside world's noise.

It's solid stuff - blocking out droning background noise nicely - although you shouldn't expect miracles. A serene overground train journey was hushed up by the earbuds, for example, but a more raucous underground equivalent proved a less relaxing affair. Something like the Bose QuietComfort Earbuds - which cost a chunk more - are particularly good at drowning out surrounding sound.

  • Best noise-cancelling (ANC) headphones for blocking out noise when you're working from home

For when you need to hear, the JBL 'buds also offer pass-through modes that let you take in more of your surroundings, such as people talking. We found these a little fiddly to turn on without using JBL's app, but resorting to that was always pretty straightforward.

JBL Live Pro+ review: AirPods Pro competition at a cut-rate price photo 1

It's a set of options that gives you plenty of control over how you listen, but even if you don't engage with it too much you should have a pleasant time listening to your tunes with the Live Pro+ TWS - it's great for low-maintenance sessions.

One sour note for the earbuds comes in call quality - it's not shockingly bad, but you'd certainly hope for better given the stems' beamforming microphones. It certainly pales in comparisons to some of the better alternatives we've tried.

Software and features

  • JBL Headphones app
  • Customisable gestures and settings
  • 7-hour battery life, 21 extra hours in case

On the software side of things, JBL has created a slick experience. Its control app is easy to use and hosts absolutely loads of customisation options for the earbuds, letting you set your noise-cancelling levels, pass-through, and more.

You can easily change what tap gestures trigger actions on the earbuds, which voice assistant you interact with through them, whether they'll detect your ears, and more. There's even a little audio test to check if they're getting the right seal in your ear, much like Apple offers for the AirPods Pro.

Also housed here is the system for setting EQ levels, and the ability to add custom settings of your own design. These are easy to setup and save, and it makes for a degree of control that's really impressive - especially at this price.

It's bright and easy to navigate, and that's echoed by the strength and speed of connection we experienced using the earbuds. They connect quickly once out of their case and work fluidly.

Battery life, finally, clocks in at around seven hours of listening, while the case houses an extra 21 hours' worth. That's fairly standard, if nothing special, but we're also pleased to see that the case charges wirelessly, so you don't have to worry about power cables if your phone is similarly equipped.

These earbuds might not have all the bells and whistles of pricier options, but they're a great alternative nonetheless, with good sound and solid features.

this is a great pair of ear buds

i really adore these ear buds and i have had them for a few months and i can assure you that they were worth every penny. i was very impressed at how they handled dolby atmos with special audio, it makes it seem like YOU are in the middle of the music. you can literally point to where all the sounds were coming from, also they have brilliant noise cancellation which come very handy for plane journey’s. but, the inly thing that let me down was the case, not the case it self but just the hing it kept making a small rattle when i push it but, but it’s mostly a minor issue. overall i think this is a great pair of ear buds.

  • excellent noice cancellation
  • great sound quality (very balanced)
  • the spatial audio is brilliant
  • very comfortable to wear because of the ear tips
  • great build quality on the buds them self, but was a bit let down by the hing on the case

Jad

  • very good anc
  • wireless charging
  • conformable fit
  • very good ambient mode
  • very good call quality
  • limited features
  • average battery life
  • even more limited features for Android users
  • average bass

Luca

Well rounded, balanced, premium earbuds from Apple

Using the Airpods Pro (1st Gens) I have realised that they are a great product when listening to music that features a lot of bass, but also does well on the high-notes aswell. They last ages, are easy and comfortable to wear and use and look great, at least in my ears. 10/10 from me, would definitely recommend.

  • Integrates well with Apple Ecosystem
  • Pairing is easy and fast
  • Settings are easy to understand and modify
  • Great sound
  • Some may not like the fit
