Solve the Next Generation of Puzzles in ‘Star Trek: Cryptic’

Space, the Final Frontier. These are the voyages of an unnamed Star Fleet officer, who rises in the ranks during the course of three different adventures, all set during the Star Trek: The Next Generation timeline. A “Puzzles and Pathways Adventure,”  Star Trek: Cryptic is part of the same line of games as this year’s Indiana Jones: Cryptic, as reviewed by Elizabeth MacAndrew for our sister site GeekMom.

What Is Star Trek: Cryptic ?

Star Trek: Cryptic is an escape room-style game for 1 or more players, ages 10 and up, and takes about 60-90 minutes per adventure to play. It’s currently available on Amazon at an MSRP of $34.99.

Star Trek: Cryptic was designed and published by Funko Games, with illustrations by Henning Ludvigsen.

Star Trek: Cryptic Components

Note: Due to possible spoilers for puzzles, I will only show the base components here, and not anything that’s found in each of the three envelopes.

Here’s what comes in the box:

• Clear screen
• (4) isolinear chips
• (4) 10-Merit tokens
• (16) 1-Merit tokens
• 3 Mission envelopes

With the game set in The Next Generation , or TNG, era of Star Trek, all of the graphic design feels like it leapt off the screen. The envelopes and cardboard Merit tokens have a metal sheen to them which is very pleasing.

The cardboard tricorder looks identical to the TNG tricorders, though in place of a screen there’s a blank space. The cardboard is multi-layered, and you’ll be able to slot in components for use in solving some of the puzzles.

While the isolinear chips aren’t translucent plastic like they used on the show, their design still manages to go above and beyond what might be expected in a board game component. The circuitry of the chip is a raised print on the blue, giving a nice texture and dimensionality when handling the pieces. Needless to say, these are also used when solving certain puzzles.

While I won’t be revealing the contents of the envelopes, rest assured that everything that you’ll find inside is of a consistently nice quality.

How to Play Star Trek: Cryptic

As this is an escape room-style game, I will do my best to avoid spoilers.

The goal of the game is to complete missions by solving puzzles and completing pathways. You will earn Merit tokens, based on how well you solve each puzzle.

Open the logbook and turn to the mission that you will be playing. Open the mission envelope, and then follow any additional instructions in the logbook. There’s really not much to do to get started playing!

Each mission is basically like a Star Trek episode. However, to progress through the mission, you will either solve puzzles, or complete pathways.

Before you work on a solution for a particular puzzle of pathway, you will first set aside a number of Merit tokens as shown in the logbook to form a Merit pool. These will go towards your total Merit score at the end of the game, but you may lose merits depending on how well you did in finding the solution, or by getting hints in solving a puzzle.

The logbook will also tell you what particular components you will need to solve the puzzle or pathway.

Much like with an escape room, you will encounter puzzles of all shapes and sizes while playing through the 3 missions included in Star Trek: Cryptic. Not only do the envelopes contain puzzles, but you may find yourself using parts of the game box itself. I found the variety of puzzles to be quite good, and of varying difficulty.

The pathways require you to take the clear screen and dry-erase marker, and a particular pathway card of the same size as the screen. After putting the screen on top of the pathway card and marking a start point, you then move the screen several inches from the card and must freehand draw a route.

Some of the pathways may require you to interact with areas shown on the pathway card by marking an “X” on the screen where the interaction takes place.

Once you have completed your path, you flip the pathway card over, place the screen on top, and check your path to see how well you did.

In the case of the pathway above, we sadly did not beam up some of the hair of the Vulcan laying on the floor. That unexpected teleporter haircut caused us to lose a couple of Merit tokens for the Vulcan rescue.

A mission ends when you have completed all the puzzles and pathways, and read the final entry for the mission. You count all the Merit tokens that you’ve earned during the mission, and then refer to a table which gives you a rank based on the number of tokens earned.

Why You Should Play Star Trek: Cryptic

If you’re a fan of escape room-style games and Star Trek, then you’re going to want to play Star Trek: Cryptic. As I’d mentioned earlier, the puzzles have a nice variety to them, which is essential to this type of game. There were definitely a few puzzles that gave us a real run for our money, to the point where we actually had to go back to the logbook to get a hint. And while you can play the game solo, I found it’s much more enjoyable to play with 2-3 people, especially as that way you’ll get some help with the puzzles.

Everything in the components, artwork, and graphic design of the game just feels like Star Trek. But even more importantly, so does the writing. Each mission is narrated by an unseen and unnamed member of Starfleet, and the story is revealed through a succession of their personal logs. Whoever wrote the log entries definitely knows and loves Star Trek, as each mission feels like its own mini-episode of a TNG episode. There are also lots of tiny details peppered throughout which just scream Trek knowledge. Sometimes, the writing was so enjoyable that I’d want to hurry up and get through a puzzle just so I could find out what happened next!

The low MSRP of Star Trek: Cryptic makes it a steal for the content and quality of the components. While there’s not going to be much replay for you after you’ve completed the missions, the game is fully resettable. That means you can always pack everything from a mission back into its envelope, and pass on the game to a friend, thereby extending its value.

My friend Ray and I are both big Star Trek fans, so we were thoroughly delighted by Star Trek: Cryptic. That being said, if you’re not a Star Trek fan, you may instead want to consider something like Indiana Jones: Cryptic . But genre aside, the puzzles and pathways of Star Trek: Cryptic are very satisfying to solve, so you may just end up picking up both!

Other than the Hold/Merge order, your new system for using rewards is, in all honesty, not good. I don't know why you put the rewards into the "Information" tab and force people to copy the code for using them, but it has failed at least twice for me now. I have lost at least 20,000 points because of this. I like BGB a lot, so this change is truly disappointing. Additionally, you should allow more than 5% of an order to be discounted at one time for people with 100,000+ points. If it weren't for those failures I've had with the new rewards system, I would be accumulating points faster than I can spend them because of this limit. Feel free to contact me regarding this. Some dink the game for the AI art. I don't. I think the art is fine. It is a bit pricey for what it is. That took it from a 5 to 4 star for me. I enjoy the gameplay. It offers a lot of variety due to the variable scoring conditions. It is relatively quick to play for a civ type game. The rules are mid level and not too many. It provides a good mental 'crunch', but not too much. For me the main aspect is - it is fun.

Has some splendor vibes.

Star Trek: Cryptic

This is a spoiler-free review.

Star Trek has been capturing the imagination of TV viewers for almost 60 years. It’s inserted itself into pop culture, and even more into nerd culture. The original series was a boundary pushing show in its own right, but the introduction of Star Trek: The Next Generation pushed its influence even further. Since then, TV shows and movies have continued to flesh out this futuristic universe.

Star Trek: Cryptic tells a new story in this well-known setting. An interactive story game designed by Prospero Hall and published by Funko Games , Star Trek: Cryptic is best for 1-3 players ready to sit down for an hour or more.

How to Play

Upon opening the box, you’ll be presented with instructions, reminding you that this isn’t a typical board game.

Instead, Star Trek: Cryptic is an interactive story, filled to the brim with puzzles. The logbook will lead you through three missions, each of which takes 60-90 minutes (or more). Step into the role of a Starfleet officer, following them from an early mission as a cadet on the USS Euclid to their later years as captain of the USS Radiant.

Each of the three missions tells a different story, but all three are related, and need to be played in order.

Cryptic tells its story through a combination of your character’s Officer logs, narrative around the puzzles, and the results of the puzzles themselves. Each puzzle awards some amount of “merit”, represented by cardboard coins.

The Puzzles

The most common type of puzzle uses the pathways system hinted at in the subtitle of Star Trek: Cryptic – “A Puzzles and Pathways Adventure”.

Pathway puzzles use a clear plastic “pathway screen” and a specific pathway card. Lay the clear plastic over the card and mark your starting point with the included dry-erase marker. Then, remove the screen and draw a safe path from the start to the goal. You have to do this freehand – no tracing! When you’re satisfied with your path, flip the card over and check how you did.

Non-pathway puzzles come in a wide variety, but all of them require you to come up with a word (or short phrase) to answer the puzzle. Answer words are mixed with hints in the back of the logbook. Using a hint will reduce the merits you get for solving the puzzle, of course.

Nothing is timed in this game; take as long as you want to solve the 13-15 puzzles that make up a mission. When you reach the end of a mission chapter, compare your merits to the key and find out how much you’ve advanced in rank!

Impressions

If you’re a Trekkie, you’ve no doubt imagined yourself on a starship bridge, exploring boldly where no one has gone before. The story in Star Trek: Cryptic does exactly this – it places you in the Star Trek universe. You’ll interact with familiar tropes and a few recognizable characters.

My Favorite Puzzles

Most of the puzzles do a great job at continuing the theme. Every mission has at least one puzzle that uses the tricorder and one that has you rearrange isolinear chips. It’s a little bit cheesy, but it felt right to be using these iconic Star Trek tools in the pursuit of our goals.

There are more pathways in the game than any other kind of puzzle. While this sometimes felt repetitive, the pathways were used in a variety of ways and could reveal unexpected details in the story.

The plastic used for the pathways (and any other puzzle that required drawing) erased cleanly over and over again. We’ve used and erased it at least 25 times now, and it’s still clear and ready to be used again. It’s a small thing, but it meant we never had to pause our mission to clean it.

Not Always Starfleet Quality

Of course, when a designer tries so many different kinds of puzzles, some will fall flat. Every mission contained at least one physical puzzle that required assembling. The story always gave a reason for these puzzles, but they rarely fit the theme.

A few times, the book threw a bunch of information at us with no real direction. Hints were sometimes helpful, but often felt just as obtuse as the puzzle itself. And it was exceptionally frustrating to lose all our merits when we solved every part of a puzzle except unscrambling a made-up Trekkian word.

Families, Couples, or Solo?

There are three Trek fans in our family – me, Andrew, and our youngest son, Elliot. Due to some family scheduling issues, we decided to play the missions in pairs. Andrew and Elliot played the first, Elliot and I played the second, and only the adults played the third.

This was – mostly – the right choice. Each puzzle in a mission has to be fully answered before you can move on to the next, making this a game that’s best experienced solo or in a very small group. Even at two players, puzzle solving often turned into one player doing and one player watching.

Why wasn’t it always the best choice? Because the third mission references the earlier stories heavily and uses some background knowledge – culminating in a puzzle that requires you to look back at nearly every non-pathway puzzle you completed over the course of the game!

We also found that game sessions ran longer than we expected, 90 minutes or more. Thankfully, it’s easy to pause between puzzles to pick the game up again later. Just throw a bookmark in and keep track of your merits.

Despite a few shortcomings, all the Trekkies in our family enjoyed Star Trek: Cryptic . Since none of the puzzles are designed to be destroyed, each of us can even go back and try the mission(s) we missed, or share them with a friend. The story combined with the puzzles really makes me feel like I get to step into Starfleet for an hour or so. It’s a perfect gift for a Trekkie, young or old.
