As any frequent traveler would tell you, the secret to staying comfortable on the road is to dress in layers, and that includes packing a warm travel wrap or poncho that will come in handy the next time that air vent above your head starts blowing cold air. In fact, a blanket scarf or shawl is one of the most practical and versatile travel accessories you could carry with you. You can use it as a blanket, a makeshift pillow, a scarf, a seat cover, and, depending on how you style it, even as a sweater.

So we decided to find the best among so many options on the market. After careful consideration of dozens of wrap, shawl, and poncho styles, White+Warren's cashmere travel wrap came up on top. The incredibly soft and warm material, paired with a classic design oozing timeless elegance, is a multitasking powerhouse — whether you swaddle in it during trips or drape it over your shoulder as an evening accessory. Here are the rest of our top picks for the best travel wraps and scarves.

Best Overall

White+warren cashmere travel wrap.

White+Warren

The cashmere is spun from an extra strong fabric and comes in over two dozen shades.

At $350, it is an investment piece.

White+Warren's cashmere wrap has a cult following among travelers, and for a very good reason: it marries impeccable quality with timeless style. And if you've followed its evolution since it was introduced two decades ago, you've probably noticed that it has been released in literally hundreds of shades. This is without compromising on its quality and features, of course, which are key.

While the wrap is also available as a smaller scarf, we prefer the regular version, which is about six inches larger in width and length. We've used it as a blanket during flights, draped it as a shawl for formal dinners, and bundled it up around the neck for that trendy oversized scarf look. And even after more than five years of being a constant companion to our trips, it still looks and feels just as soft and warm as it did the day we took it out of the bag.

White+Warren uses soft cashmere yarn spun from two twisted threads instead of one, which makes for an extra strong and durable fabric that is less likely to wear off or tear. At the same time, this doesn't make the wrap bulkier or heavier, so it remains super packing-friendly.

The hardest thing you'll have to do is pick just one because it’s available in so many shades, all monochrome — from limited edition colors like mint and neon mauve to beautiful classics like sand and moss green.

The Details: Two sizes | Cashmere | 81 x 36 inches

Best Cashmere

Naked cashmere karlie wrap.

Naked Cashmere

It's extra long.

The shawl is a little sheer.

Naked Cahmere's Karlie shawl is an excellent option for those looking for a versatile travel wrap that can easily be styled as a scarf without feeling bulky. It has a seven-gauge knit, meaning that the fabric is mesh-like and slightly sheer, but that doesn't mean it’s any less warm. Cashmere can be up to seven times warmer than wool, so this wrap will keep you cozy during your travels.

At 84 inches long, you can even fold it in half and use it as a blanket for extra warmth. While Naked Cashmere's wrap isn't available in nearly as many shades as White+Warren's, you can still choose among six earthy and perfect-for-winter shades — from classic beige to navy and black.

The Details: One size | Cashmere | 84 x 36 inches

Woolrich Wool Blend Cape with Contrasting Details

It has a snap closure that keeps it closed at the front.

The fabric can only be dry-cleaned.

Keep warm and cozy (and look very stylish) with this boho chic cape by Woolrich. The material is a blend of polyamide and polyester for extra strength and durability, but most is natural wool. That translates into a breathable, odor-resistant, moisture-wicking product, but also wrinkle-resistant and easy to clean.

And since it’s often the small details that make the biggest difference, this cape also has a convenient tab with a snap closure that helps keep it in place. Also helpful: the back is longer than the front for extra coverage, and the fringed hemline makes for a cool finishing design touch.

The Details: One size | Wool, polyamide, polyester

Best Fleece

The wheat collection aspen wrap.

The Wheat Collection

The brushed fleece fabric is so soft.

It’s a little bulky when folded

A soft fleece blanket is the definition of cozy. The Wheat Collection's Los Angeles-designed-and-made Aspen wrap feels like you're enveloped in a cloud — it’s lightweight, buttery soft, and warm. The secret is in the fabric: brushed fleece, polyester, and cotton deliver the best of breathability, comfort, and moisture resistance.

The wrap has a classic rectangular cut with blanket-like wide stitched hemlines and comes in a pale gray shade (unfortunately, it's the only one). The only downside is that it takes up more room when folded, so we suggest you store it in a backpack or a carry-on.

The Details: One size | Brushed fleece, polyester, cotton

Best with Pockets

Ecoinway women wrap shawl.

The pockets lay flat.

The fabric is thin, so this is more of a four-season cape.

Pockets are always a welcome addition to any piece of clothing or travel accessory, including wraps and blankets. We prefer this cozy cape over other options on the market because the patch pockets lay flat, so they don't add bulk to the silhouette when they are empty. They are large enough to hold a smartphone, a passport, and other smaller items (or to keep your hands warm). The cape is made from a blend of wool and viscose, resulting in a delicate, warm, lightweight fabric that is easy to pack and travel with.

And while we do wish this beautiful cape came in more prints and shades, we love the three timeless color-block patterns it’s available in. They are easy to style and complement casual as well as formal outfits.

The Details: One size | Lambswool, viscose

Best Budget

Missshorthair women's printed shawl wrap.

It is reversible.

It is made from a synthetic material.

There are many benefits to choosing a cape or a travel blanket made from a synthetic material, including the price. This stylish cape has the same cut and elegant looks as other styles made from cashmere or wool but costs just $20. And you are actually getting something that few pricier capes have: reversibility (so you actually get two for the price of one).

Other pros include a roomy silhouette, so feel free to use it as a blanket during a flight or a wrap while strolling through a new city. And as we mentioned, it is made from thick, breathable acrylic that doesn't wrinkle (you're welcome) and is super soft to the touch.

The Details: One size | Acrylic

Best Splurge

Burberry bandana check fringe wool cape.

The fabric is pure wool and extra thick.

It has a fringed detail running across the back, which might feel uncomfortable while sitting down.

Burberry's wool scarves are iconic, and this cape is a stylish — and warmer — take on them. Cut from thick wool, it’s tailored in a diamond-inspired shape with a chic collar that keeps your neck bundled up. The fringed detail continues on the back and runs lengthwise across the middle, adding an unexpected element to the design.

Of course, what makes this cape instantly recognizable is the plaid pattern that has become synonymous with Burberry. It’s casual enough to wear with jeans through the airport but elegant enough to pair with a winter dress and walk into a restaurant. It's a must for fashionistas and travelers looking to invest in a designer piece that will last them for years.

The Details: One size | Wool | 34 inches

Best Lightweight

Quince featherweight cashmere silk frayed edge scarf.

It’s made from a luxurious silk and cashmere blend.

It's narrow in width.

Quince's beautiful shawl is excellent for keeping you warm on a breezy summer evening, visiting religious buildings that require women to cover their hair and shoulders, or simply as a beautiful scarf. At 28 inches wide, it’s narrower than most options on our list, so it looks more like a classic shawl than a blanket.

But don't let that fool you. Thanks to the beautiful blend of silk and cashmere, this shawl is lightweight, breathable, and warm. The fabric has a slight sheen, giving it a formal look.

The Details: One size | Cashmere, silk | 28 x 78 inches

Best Patterned

Mark & graham italian plaid poncho.

Mark & Graham

The print is available in several shades.

It’s made from synthetic acrylic.

A beautiful print is a great way to add a pop of color to your travel ensemble. We love Mark & Graham's monogrammable poncho because it blends form and function. First, the classic plaid print is available in four colors, so you can choose the one that best fits your style and preferences (we’re fans of the Fireside Winter Blue, but the Red Tartan is a no-brainer during the winter holidays).

Second, the cape is longer at the back (more coverage is always a good thing in our book) and it has a fringed hemline, adding a playful touch to the design.

And third, the lightweight acrylic fabric doesn't pill or shrink, and it looks just as luxurious as capes cut from wool or cashmere, without the hefty price tag.

The Details: One size | Acrylic | 68 x 56 inches

Best for Rain

Saphirose waterproof rain poncho.

It has a zipped pocket for storage.

It’s not lined and won’t keep you very warm.

We always pack a rain poncho when we’re camping, hiking, or traveling through Europe in the spring and fall. A good rain poncho should be compact and easy to store — plus, it should provide good coverage. This one meets all the requirements.

It has an oversized cape design, which makes it suitable for men and women, but you can "create" arm holes by closing the double snaps on each side. Additionally, there is a zipped pocket on the right side to store small essentials like a wallet or phone. But the best thing about it is the fabric. Unlike most rain ponchos that are made from non-breathable plastic, which ends up overheating you, this one is cut from durable, water-resistant polyester that allows air to pass through it. And that makes all the difference, especially when you're running around the city all day.

The Details: One size | Polyester

Cuyana Alpaca Cape

The classic design and longer hemline make it an excellent choice for the colder months.

It's open at the front.

Capes have been worn for centuries in Europe as outerwear to protect from the elements. Nowadays, it’s also an incredibly stylish way to keep warm. Enter this Cuyana beauty with the classic features of a cape. While it may look like an oversized blanket wrapped around the shoulders, the cape has a cardigan-like cut but lacks arm holes. We like the asymmetric silhouette and the longer ends because they let you drape it across the front and still be left with plenty of fabric.

Its luxuriously smooth surface is thanks to high-quality alpaca wool, which is warmer and softer than sheep wool, yet breathable and moisture-wicking.

The Details: One size | Baby alpaca | 31.5 inches front length from shoulder

Gobi Cashmere Essentials Kit

It comes with a pair of soft socks available in four sizes as well as an eye mask.

The eye mask is made of cashmere, which may be uncomfortable for some travelers.

Whether you’re just not a fan of airline-provided travel kits and blankets or you’d simply like to use your own set of accessories for hygienic reasons, this chic trio of items by Gobi is sure to boost the luxury factor of your next trip. It includes a travel blanket you can easily style as a scarf, a pair of soft socks, and a sleeping eye mask.

While the blanket and the eye mask are made entirely from cashmere, the socks have some Spandex for that perfect fit. Additionally, the kits are available in four sizes depending on your foot size (the eye mask and blanket remain the same across all sizes). The socks are knitted using an eight-gauge yarn for breathability, while the blanket and the eye mask have a standard two-ply 12-gauge design, suitable for both winter and cooler summer months.

The Details: S-XL | Cashmere | 59 x 39 inches

Best Oversized

Nadaam lofty cashmere blanket.

We love how versatile this blanket is —you can use it at home as a throw or on the road as a travel blanket.

It’s only available in a single shade.

Nadaam's oversized blanket is the gift that keeps on giving, whether you're snuggled on the sofa at home or trying to stay warm during a flight. At 77 inches long and 64 inches wide, it is the largest blanket on our list and can easily double as a throw or a scarf.

It’s knit from ultra-soft, lightweight Mongolian cashmere that will keep you toasty no matter where you are or how you style it. Speaking of style, other than the fringed hemline, the blanket has a classic shape and comes in a beautiful neutral color that will make it a staple in your travel wardrobe.

The Details: One size | Cashmere | 77 x 64 inches

Best for Nursing Moms

Seraphine camel cable knit nursing cover maternity shawl.

It’s a multipurpose shawl that can serve as a swaddling blanket.

It's made of natural and synthetic materials.

Traveling with kids can be very stressful, especially if you are nursing. Seraphine's smartly designed shawl features several snap buttons that keep it in place, allowing you to comfortably cover yourself and your little one. Even if you're not breastfeeding, this shawl is an excellent travel companion, as you can use it to swaddle your baby or to cover yourself or your kids.

You can also take advantage of its beautiful oversized cable knit design to style it as an asymmetric poncho or as a scarf. It’s made from a practical blend that includes wool and several synthetic fabrics, which make it warm and easy to maintain cleanliness (it can be machine washed).

The Details: One size | Wool, viscose, nylon, acrylic

Tips for Buying a Travel Wrap or Poncho

Choose materials carefully.

A travel wrap's fabric will determine many of its features, both good and bad, so you should consider it before buying. Cashmere, wool, and alpaca are excellent choices to keep you warm. They are natural fabrics known for being moisture-wicking, odor-resistant, and natural body temperature regulators. However, they do require special care, such as dry cleaning, which is more expensive in the long run.

Synthetic materials such as polyester (that's what fleece is made of), nylon (rain ponchos are often made from it), and acrylic (used as an alternative to wool) are easier to keep clean and repel moisture, but they can hold odors, catch fire easily, and cause you to overheat. They’re also often not sustainable or biodegradable.

Consider the size and shape of the scarf or wrap

Travel wraps come in many sizes and shapes, and to choose the right one for yourself, consider your travel habits and routines. If you need one to keep you warm during a long-haul flight, an oversized rectangular shape might be best, since you can use it as a blanket to cover your torso and legs. A rectangular scarf that's more narrow in shape is perfect for covering your shoulders and arms (think layovers and walking through colder buildings). And blanket scarves are usually oversized squares that you can style in multiple ways.

And as far as ponchos go, some are designed with an extra long hemline for maximum coverage while others are cropped to cover the upper body only. You'll also often see ponchos with a mock turtleneck or even a hood to keep your neck and head warm.

Since blanket scarves are square in shape, they are some of the most versatile fashion accessories. They can easily be folded diagonally into a triangle and draped around the neck. Or, if you fold it lengthwise, you can wrap it around your shoulders or neck to wear it as a shawl.

Another chic way to style it is to pair it with an elegant belt — drape the blanket scarf over your shoulders letting it hang down your sides and front, and then use the belt to cinch everything in at the waist.

You can easily fold a rectangular or square blanket scarf the same way you’d fold a regular blanket until it becomes small enough to place in your carry-on or backpack.

Ponchos are a little more complicated. Since they have a sweater-like shape, fold yours like a t-shirt. Begin by folding the left and right sides lengthwise to create a narrow rectangle. Then you can roll it (a technique that many frequent travelers prefer) or fold it tightly several times. If the fabric tends to wrinkle, rolling it is your best bet.

T&C Tried & True: The White & Warren Cashmere Travel Wrap

Why our travel editor never jet sets without it—and suggests buying it in as many colors as possible.

cashmere travel wrap

Every item on this page was chosen by a Town & Country editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.

A debate of the tempest-in-a-tea-cup variety has long raged about scarves, shawls, and wraps. Are they accessories or necessities? Fashion flourishes or wardrobe fundamentals? In the famous 1350BC bust of Egypt's Queen Nefertiti, she sports beneath her tall, conical headdress a tightly woven piece of fabric, which is cited in some sources as the earliest recorded instance of scarf-wearing. We will never know if she considered it an additional decorative layer or a practical measure to prevent that magnificent head ornament from chafing. I love my several Hermes scarves. Would I reach for them them if, say, World War III were erupting (nothing like imagining apocalypse to focus the mind) and I had get out of town with only the bare necessities tossed into a single bag? No, I would not. But what would make the cut is my black White & Warren cashmere travel wrap. I bought my first one about 10 years ago. As T&C's travel editor, I travel a lot , and I never, ever, head to the airport—regardless of where I'm going—without it folded in my carry-on. And the wrap is not only indispensable to me for travel—I need it for life.

A hyperbolic statement, you might think. But not really. Here's why:

The wrap is huge—81" X 36." Really, it's an almost seven-foot-long blanket of seven-gauge, two-ply knit cashmere. I sleep under it on airplanes. Its softness and warmth transform even an economy class flight into a nearly pleasurable experience. I also swaddle myself in it on overly-air-conditioned buses, trains, cars (traveling or at home). I wrap it around myself in too-cold restaurants and movie theaters (or did, back when we frequented those).

White + Warren Cashmere Travel Wrap Scarf

White + Warren Cashmere Travel Wrap Scarf

Despite its size, the wrap is delightfully light. So light, in fact, that it scrunches into a smallish bundle and fits easily not just into carry-ons but into most medium-sized handbags. (So you can pretty much always have it with you.) For the same reason--its softness and lightness--it can be comfortably wound several times around your neck without feeling bulky; do that, and you're not trailing anything behind you.

The wrap can be dressed up or down. I've worn it slung over my shoulders with long evening gowns. I wear it with jeans and a T-shirt. I really like it with leather jackets. There is almost nothing it doesn't look good with, and it can pull many an outfit together.

The wrap is stunningly versatile. You'll find online White + Warren's helpful video demonstrations of the many different ways to wear it. There are at least 10, and each is both decorative and practical: the classic, the classic with a twist, the pretzel, the waterfall, the Gigi, the snood, the fling, the knot, the loop, and the hood (yes, it can also be worn over the head). If I'm traveling and packing light, the wrap can take the place of sweater, jacket, and hoodie.

What else? It doesn't, despite all that use, ever pill (a pet peeve). And because it's black, it doesn't, of course, show dirt. (And is hand-washable in cold water when needed--although I prefer the occasional dry-clean.)

The wrap also makes an excellent present. "Do you know what I bought for all my bridesmaids at my wedding?" a colleague said to me about a decade ago. "A black White + Warren cashmere travel wrap." (That's how I first found out about it.)

About the color: Black is my go-to for sheer practicality—that's why I recommend it here. But the wrap does in fact come in many colors. Some are White + Warren staples, others change with the seasons, and there seem to be fresh iterations of various delectable hues every few months--pearl white, neon daffodil, faded khaki, pink buds, washed teal heather, horizon.... That's the only downside: It is tempting—and not inexpensive—to start a collection. I've spent many an hour mentally debating a next purchase and have at times succumbed. But no need to go there.)

As for the black wrap, I'm on my second one. The first, after eight solid years of almost constant use, had not worn out. Two years ago, I lost it, and in a most improbable place: the Kharga oasis in Egypt's vast and remote Western Desert (next stop, Libya). I'd flown there from Cairo on a reporting trip and left it on a bus. It was not a happy day. What would I wear over my dress that evening back in Cairo? However would I endure my flight home? I felt like a toddler without her blankie. But over time, I grew to quite like the idea of my cashmere wrap giving whoever found it, man or woman, as much pleasure and comfort as it had given me. And perhaps, in that hard place of few luxuries, it is giving them even more.

Perm Specialty Wraps

Large curls, vintage curl styles or other unique looks can also be accomplished using varying rod sizes and customized wrap patterns for your hair length and style. A specialty perm service opens up the possibilities to a myriad of looks and limits your style only to that of you and your stylists’ imagination. Sophisticated or couture looks can also be created with specialty wrapping techniques custom placed and directed for you desired look, hair texture and length.

Types of Perm Specialty Wraps

If your hair is longer than shoulder length, adding curl or waves will take a bit more attention, time and customized wrapping. A professional stylist will be able to tailor the amount of curl you want with the type of perm wrap and size of the perm rods. One example of a specialty wrap is a multi-textured perm. The stylist can use two different sized perm rods creates curls that are natural and less defined. This is a great look to add body and dimension for long hair.

Another type of specialized permanent treatment is a partial perm. Instead of a full perm some hairstyles are better suited to having only part of the head permanently waved or curled. This can provide lift by treating only part of the head, which provides lift; volume and texture to a pre-determined section that will best compliment the hair cut and style. For example: short haircuts, can benefit from a limited permanent wave that can add texture to the crown of the head. A partial perm can also be utilized to add texture to new grow out along the root line, leaving previously treated hair untouched. When applying this technique, only some of the hair is chemically treated, but all of the hair is put on rollers. This way even the untreated hair will fall in a similar hair pattern as the chemically altered hair, making the overall style seem more natural.

Having a Professional Permanent Specialty Wrap Done

To create the customized and specialized perm it is best to schedule a consultation first with the stylist. At this time you will want to bring in pictures of the looks you want to create. Your professional stylist will create for you’re a custom wave or curl to compliment your face shape, hair length, cut, color and style. They will then prepare the hair with a deep cleansing or neutralizing shampoo, which will help accept the permanent products. Another solution is then placed on the hair to ensure it remains damp through the entire permanent process. Then the beautician applies either an acidic or alkaline perm solution before wrapping the hair around rods. When the curl is set, the hair is gingerly removed from the curling rods to reveal your new luxurious hair.

It is integral to your permanent created by a professional stylist with experience rather than a home permanent wave or “do it yourself” kit. A professional stylist can give you a safe and healthy perm while creating a beautiful customized look with specialized perm wrapping.

Using a trained professional will give you the peace of mind that you will leave the salon with beautiful new lush waves or curls that was specialized just for you. Your professional relaxing appoint will also include a luxurious scalp & hand massage to relax and pamper you, as well as a styling of your new specialized wave or curl. This ensures you leave in a state of tranquility, looking your best.

I Finally Got A Beach Wave Perm & Have Zero Regrets

I don’t know why I waited so long.

beach wave perm

For the past decade or so, as summer approaches and I start to envision what the season will look like — where to go on vacation , what to wear , and how to manage my hair in the heat — I always consider whether or not to get a beach wave perm. I take screenshots of inspiration, look at before and after pictures at hair salons, and consult with beauty editors. Yet, not knowing anyone who’s actually gotten it done made me too nervous to go through the long process required of perms (or so I thought), and possibly again if I was unhappy with the results.

But, after almost two decades of wondering what my hair would look like wavy and loosely textured without the need for salt from an ocean plunge or hot tools and styling products, I finally took the plunge and got the perm.

Now hear me out. I know at first sound of the word “perm” conjures up images of tightly coiled ringlets from the ‘80s, aka the spiral perm, and countless hours sitting at the salon with funky smelling formula seeping into one’s hair. I know — I had this done multiple times, starting from the tender age of six. But to my surprise, and relief, I discovered that perms have come a long way since the days of my poodle-like mane.

To achieve my ideal “natural” looking, soft tousled curls, I went with the American Wave at the Brooklyn location of Nick Arrojo’s salon ARROJO NYC . I loved the results so much that once the waves grew out, I tried a new perm called Curl Cult , a proprietary new perm created by celebrity hairstylist and owner of LA-based Hairroin Salon Janine Jarman. While both perms produced the bouncy, loose waves I desired, the process and formula used quite differs.

Curl Cult Perm

Over seven years in the making, this is the first ever Protein Perm which utilizes a Pisum-Protex technology that shapes the hair from the inside out. Paraben- and sulfate surfactant-free, the two notable and significant differences with Jarman’s formula is that it takes almost half the time — in and out of the chair in about two hours for my long hair— and the smell is drastically less offensive than the standard perm. Ninety percent of the service is done at the chair, skipping the step of rinsing the perming solution and blotting the hair at the sink and applying the neutralizer right on top — also a formula Jarman created that processes in as little as ten minutes, at most twenty, depending on the hair type and desired results.

What Hair Type Works With The Curl Cult Perm?

While you can get a Curl Cult perm with dyed or bleached hair, like other perms, it depends on how damaged your hair may be. Jarman notes that, “anyone with metallic hair color such as henna and had Thio-based services done previously should not get a perm.”

If you are looking to redefine your curl patterns, create S bends, relax your curls with a reformation perm, or a get a simple root lift, you can achieve this with the Curl Cult demi-perm solution.

In regards to my hair condition at the time of service, it had been ten months since I last permed my hair at Arrojo Salon for the American Wave perm. I dye it black about three to four times a year and I almost always air dry my hair.

kathy lee's wavy hair before a beach wave perm

What Is The Process?

First, I informed Jarman of the type of curls I was looking for — loose, wavy, and soft — and the type of maintenance I could manage — air dry and minimal styling products. Since she can see the texture from last year’s perm still very loosely in place, she then determined the size of rods for my hair. After shampooing and conditioning, she sectioned my hair and rolled on rods of two different sizes. Since my hair is long and heavy, Jarman notes that she “used smaller rods above the occipital bone to compensate for the amount the curl gets pulled out with the length and weight. For the underside, I went a size down to maintain as much length as possible all while getting it to blend and look like you grew it yourself.”

Thereafter, she applied the perming solution, checked the strands after ten minutes, and left the solution on for another ten. When two to three strands had the pull of a rubber band, Jarman then applied the neutralizer. After about fifteen minutes, Jarman removed the rods and rinsed my hair, she then conditioned it using the Curl Cult Magic Spell Conditioning Leave-In spray and detangled with a wide tooth comb. After applying the Curl Cult Enhance Moisturizing Curl Cream and scrunching my hair with a microfiber towel to remove the water, Jarman diffused my hair.

beach wave perm

How Much Maintenance Does It Require?

Like any other perm, it’s advised not to wash your hair for 48 hours. I also avoid tying it in a tight ponytail or bun as I don’t want to compromise the curl pattern.

I personally don’t like the look of very defined curls so I simply spritz on leave-in conditioner and apply the occasional oil in the morning. I do try and avoid wrapping my hair in a towel but, most often, it’s not very practical as I need to speed up the drying process to get myself out the door.

To keep up the moisture in my hair, on days I don’t wash my hair I spritz on water to open up the cuticles, and then leave-in conditioner. I shampoo my hair about every four days and use a cowash on day two.

The great thing about this perm and the American Wave perm is that there is no distinct demarcation because the curls are loose, and by the time there is significant growth from when you had the perm, the curls are much looser so it all looks very natural.

Jarman advises that “If you have no natural texture to your hair, you will need [the perm] more frequently (approximately four to six months) because it won’t blend in as much when your natural hair starts to grow in. With short hair, you will need a perm every three to four months because you end up cutting off the perm ... some clients with long hair and a natural texture come in every eight to twelve months because they love how it looks when it’s grown out and enjoy the different version of it as it softens.”

The cost of the Curl Cult perm starts at $150 for short lengths, $350 for average, and then $500-$700 for very long. For reference, my hair length costs around $400-$600.

American Wave Perm

As opposed to the traditional perm, which tend to leave the hair dry and damaged, and in effect frizzy, the American Wave — which is Thio (sulfur) , formaldehyde, and ammonia-free — includes cysteamine as the active ingredient, potassium as a cuticle softener in the waving lotion, and utilizes ionic technology. As a result, the American Wave 'softens' the hair bonds in the cortex as opposed to breaking it, as done during a traditional perm.

The specific look I requested was the Beach Wave Wrap , which combines straight and wavy textures to create tousled waves, and can be customized to your liking. It’s not a one-size fits all technique, but instead one where you can work with the stylist to specify the tightness of how much hair per wave.

What Hair Type Works With The American Wave?

Similar to Curl Cult, those with colored and previously permed hair can get the American Wave. But it may not be suitable for heavily highlighted or bleached manes. Not sure if you fall into the category of “heavily?”

My long, straight black hair before the American Wave Perm

At Arrojo NYC, the stylist will do a porosity strand test by taking one strand of your hair and putting it in the waving lotion to see how it reacts. If it breaks or becomes distressed by becoming gummy or stringy, the stylist will instead suggest a series of conditioning treatments to strengthen and repair the hair before reconsidering the service.

In terms of hair thickness, the American Wave is good for someone with thinner density hair as the wave will give them volume, bounce, and thickness. But if you are looking for big cascading C shaped curls with naturally fine hair, this perm won’t be able to give those results.

From start to finish, the whole process took a little over three hours. First, my stylist Kat Rohan shampooed my hair twice before wet cutting to create the slightest layers. This allows room for the waves to take place and for the hair to not be too overpowering, especially at the ends. From thereon, six sections were made with a zigzag parting, and Rohan continued this sectioning in between each individual soft rod that resembles a foam-like tube, which the hair was wrapped around, so that the waves sit naturally and there is less of a harsh part line.

Rohan selected the largest size coil for the loosest curl, but if you prefer a tighter pattern, there are multiple options to choose from. Those with shorter hair may consider tighter rods as the ones used on my long hair may not be able to create any curls on shorter hair.

Kathy under an overhead hair dryer

Thereafter, my stylist applied a warm perming solution and left it on for 25 minutes (the maximum time, which can vary depending on hair thickness and strands per rod). My hair was then rinsed under hot water for ten minutes and neutralized for five minutes using a solution which closes up the cuticle of the hair and secures the change in texture — it basically locks everything in. Lastly, Rohan rinsed out the neutralizer, removed the rods, and conditioned my hair using the American Wave Submerge conditioner.

In terms of styling, Rohan scrunched my hair with a towel after conditioning, combed it out using a wide-tooth comb, applied the American Wave Structure hair cream and Wave mist, and a light serum to rehydrate the hair. I was then placed under a dryer to remove excess water, and after, Rohan used a diffuser to further dry each curl. If you are looking for a more natural look, you can air dry instead and forego the products (as I did with my hair in the lead image).

back view of Kathy's beach wave permed hair

For 48 hours after the perm, I was advised to not wash my hair or work out (due to sweat) or expose my hair to the rain. Basically, avoid getting it wet in any way in order to not deactivate the perm chemicals. If you need to pull back your locks, do so gently, but try to avoid tying or clipping your hair altogether for at least one week.

For products, Rohan instructs me to use only sulfate- and sodium chloride-free shampoo and conditioner, and only comb through when my hair is wet. Do not brush your hair when wet or dry.

The wave falls out naturally over time, usually lasting between two to five months. The great thing about this perm is that it’s so subtle, the grow out process isn’t severe, no matter how straight your natural hair may be. And, if you love this new look, you can continue to receive the perm, depending on the condition of your hair at that time and if you’re willing to shell out $400 minimum (depending on hair length) each time.

I’m all for sitting in a salon chair for a few hours if it means my daily routine is shortened by a good chunk of time. I now have soft, textured waves which were previously only possible after a dip in the sea or styling with heat. I’m happy to say that after three weeks since my visit, my heart is fully content with finally taking the plunge and getting the beach wave perm I’ve so long thought about.

11 Famous Perm Wrapping Patterns & Techniques (For 2023)

perm wrapping pattern and techniques

The pattern you wrap your hair around the perm rods decides how the curls will finally look. There are many perm wrapping patterns to choose between the one look that will suit your hair the best.

Hairstylist experiment with different tools and techniques to create diverse perm looks. For example, in a basic perm, you will get loose or tight curls depending on the diameter of the perm rods.

However, with the evolution of hair perm, there are over 50 perm looks to say hello to your future curls. All of these looks are created using different perm-wrapping patterns.

While some of these perm patterns get you a voluminous hair look, others are good at producing tighter curls or ringlets. You may even get your personalized hairstyle by putting your hair on the perm rods in any unique style.

Below, I have put together some of the most famous and fantastic perm wrapping patterns of the modern day. So, Let’s explore each of them!

Unique Perm Wrapping Patterns To Get You Perfect Curls

Combining the different wrapping techniques helps you pull off natural-looking perms that add volume to your manes. In the following, I have discussed the most famous perm wrapping patterns.

1. Piggyback Hair Perm Wrapping

The piggyback perm rolling pattern is ideal for creating natural-looking curls on mid to long-length hair.

This perm wrap technique employs two perm rods for each subsection of the hair strands.

You will roll the smaller rod from the mid-length of your sub-sectioned hair down to the roots. It does not require the endpaper.

While wrapping your hair down from the mid-length, you must ensure the hair left above remains untangled.

Do you know why this wrapping technique is called piggyback? The smaller perm rod carries the larger rod on its back.

Once you have rolled your hair around the smaller perm rod, now is time to wrap the remaining hair.

First, use the perm paper to wrap your hair ends and then roll them down to already rolled manes on the larger perm rod.

In the next heading, I have embedded a youtube video that will further help you master piggyback and windmill perm wrap patterns.

2. Windmill Perm Wrap Technique

The windmill perm wrapping pattern is an excellent alternative to the piggyback wrap technique.

Once you have sectioned your hair, wrap the perm paper around your hair ends and start rolling hair around the perm rod.

When halfway through your sectioned hair length, place the band or strap over the perm rod and stop wrapping.

Take the new perm rod, and place it a few centimetres down the first with no endpapers. Hold the first perm rod and give it a single swirl around the second one.

As a result, you will have both perm rods in a shape of a windmill. Move them down to the hair roots like windmill wheels while wrapping your hair.

3. Savage Perm Wrapping Pattern

The savage perm wrapping pattern is also similar to the piggyback technique. It also employs two different perm rod sizes on each hair subsection.

However, there are a few exceptions!

You will need two different diameters and sizes of rods.

Start wrapping your hair from mid-length down to the roots on a bigger diameter and smaller length rods. You will not need endpaper for this step.

To roll the hair above mid-length, choose a smaller diameter rod than the earlier one and roll your hair from the ends to the already wrapped manes in a spiral pattern.

Plus, you will need perm paper for this step!

Combining these two perm-wrapping techniques creates a more natural curly look with a mix of different curl sizes.

4. Braided Hair Perm

Did you know that you can perm over braids to create bouncy and textured hairstyles?  French braid perm  is in trend nowadays.

Using this technique, you can get tight or loose curls with a perm kit where you don’t need to employ perm rods.

The whole procedure of braid perm is almost the same as a conventional perm.

The challenging part is braiding your hair correctly to produce ringlets or waves.

If you have experience getting yourself any braid, this perming technique can do a miracle for your locks.

Once you have decided which shape and size of curls you want, you will need to look out for a braid pattern that you can employ instead of perm rods.

There are plenty of different braiding pattern tutorials available on youtube. You can learn any and give your braid-like curls with a perm kit.

5. Piston Perm Wrapping Technique

The piston perm wrap method is an effective way to add volume and texture to your hair. This technique results in bouncy, textured curls with plenty of movement and body.

Piston curls get their name from the process of wrapping hair around rods in an up-and-down motion, creating curls that point in various directions.

The alternating wrap direction creates a mix of curl sizes and shapes for a naturally tousled, beachy style.

Below is a step-by-step guide on how to wrap your hair using the piston pattern:

  • Section clean, towel-dried hair into four sections. Work on one section at a time.
  • Take a 1-inch wide subsection and place the end on the perm rod.
  • Wrap hair around the rod in a clockwise direction to the scalp.
  • At the halfway point, reverse direction and wrap hair counterclockwise to the scalp.
  • Alternate wrapping clockwise and counterclockwise to the end of the subsection.
  • Secure the hair tightly to the rod with end papers.
  • Repeat the process with all sections, alternating wrap direction with each rod.
  • Process rods according to perm solution instructions.

6. Stacked Perm Pattern

Stacked perm wraps create amazing bouncy curls that fall perfectly into place, giving you a defined pile of gorgeous ringlets with tons of body. Trust me; it’s worth trying out this look!

It’s called stacked because strands are wrapped vertically in different directions, stacking the curls on each other.

The wrap direction is alternated to build up curl formation and allow curls to mesh together.

Here is a step-by-step procedure for wrapping hair in a stacked pattern:

  • Section clean, towel-dried hair into four quadrants. Work on one section at a time.
  • Take a 1-inch subsection and place the ends on the perm rod.
  • Wrap the hair around the rod toward the scalp.
  • When you reach the scalp, reverse direction and wrap the hair around the rod toward the ends.
  • Continue wrapping vertically in alternating directions until you reach the end of the subsection.
  • Secure the hair tightly on the rod with end papers.

7. Croquignole Spiral Perm

Croquignole means wrapping your hair around rods, starting from ends and moving inwards.

This perm-wrapping pattern is as simple as anyone asks. Firstly, you will start from the lower back of your head.

If your head has five parts, from the frontal hairline to the lower back, select the one part behind your head and section the hair into two parts vertically.

Divide them as if you are to braid these two sections.

Subsection hair into 6-8 parts and wrap them around regular perm rods.

Now for the remaining of your head, use flex rods for wrapping in the spiral fashion.

Wrap the hair in different directions to give the perm a natural look.

What do I mean by different directions?

While wrapping the hair on Flexi rods, you can roll the rods forward and reverse direction.

Think of holding the rod between your thumb and its adjacent finger, touching the tips of your thumbs with the fingers, and moving them downwards; it’s a forward way of rolling the perm rods.

Moving the fingers in from the base of your thumbs to the tips will be the reverse wrapping direction.

8. Gemini Perm Wrap Pattern

For a Gemini perm wrapping pattern, when you select the subsection of your hair to roll around the rods, further divide it into two parts before rolling.

Roll one part on a smaller diameter perm rod using the endpaper. Next, wrap the remaining part on a larger diameter perm rod.

Also, make sure you roll hair around the pair of rods in different directions.

The idea behind employing this technique is to create near to naturally curly hair look.

9. Bricklay Perm Rolling Technique

Bricklay pattern perm requires two different lengths of rods. If the larger one is 8 cm, the smaller one would be 5 cm or less. Moreover, it does not need the pre-sectioning of the hair that’s usual for other perm patterns.

For the first step, take the lengthier perm rod, and place it horizontally adjacent to your frontal hairline. Now select the section of hair the same as the length of the perm rod.

Lift the sectioned hair at the 90-degree angle straight over your head, comb it, and place double endpaper at the hair ends.

Wrap the selected section around the rod.

For the second step, you will need two smaller length rods that cumulatively equal the length of the first rod.

Select the section of hair just as you did in the first step with the larger perm rod. Divide it into two equal parts matching the length of two smaller perm rods.

Use single perm paper or its alternative to wrap the ends of these subsections and roll your hair around the smaller rods.

Repeat both steps for the remaining hair.

10. Vintage Perm Pattern

A vintage glam perm pattern is an excellent way to create soft romantic waves on your naturally straight hair.

You will need 10-15 Flexi rods or the usual perm stick with a 1.6 to 2.0 cm diameter.

Moreover, you will roll your hair on these perm rods in two directions, away and toward your face.

You won’t need to section your hair into equal parts. However, the sections should not be too varied from each other.

At the front of your head, you will wrap hair on the perm rods in a direction moving towards your face. For the back, you can do the contrary.

On the sides, you can do a mix of both directions.

11. Spiral Hair Wrapping Perm Pattern

You will need more perm rods than the usual perm for a spiral perm wrapping pattern.

Hair is sectioned as you will go through the pattern.

Select a section of hair and secure the remaining hair with a clip— further subsection your hair according to the perm rod size.

After wrapping the perm paper at the ends, roll the hair around the rods for one to two revolutions.

Once the hair ends are secure on the roller, wind the perm rods around your hair to give it a twisted shape.

This process is repeated throughout your hair. However, each new section will be rolled in the opposite direction as the first one is wrapped.

Wrapping Up

There are multiple perm wrapping patterns to choose between the one that will suit your hair the best. Above, I have explained a few of them. You can further search the pattern by its name on youtube to watch the video tutorials.
