LOS ANGELES , July 6, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — After more than 50 years of touring, and consistently selling out arenas and stadiums worldwide, the Eagles announced today that their upcoming “The Long Goodbye”  will be the band’s final tour.

Thirteen shows will be initially announced. The first set of dates will begin September 7, 2023 , in New York .

The Eagles’ long-time contemporaries and fellow Hall of Famers, Steely Dan,  will be joining these historic shows and commemorating their own 50+ year career.

Presale tickets and VIP packages will be available starting Wednesday, July 12 for all announced shows. The general on-sale will start Friday, July 14 at 10:00 AM local time.

During “The Long Goodbye,” the Eagles – Don Henley , Joe Walsh , Timothy B. Schmit , with Vince Gill and Deacon Frey – will perform as many shows in each market as their audience demands. The tour is expected to continue into 2025.

Over the band’s more than 50 years of touring, the Eagles have performed more than 1,000 concerts around the world, accounting for more than 15 million tickets. Eagles’ tours have consistently ranked in the Top 10 of both concert industry publications, Billboard and Pollstar .

In the Fall of 1971, the Eagles formed, pioneered, and personified a uniquely American musical style blending country, folk, R&B, rock, and pop sensibilities, and would go onto become one of the most creatively and commercially successful bands of all time.  In today’s faddish, fractured, rock landscape, the Eagles retain an appeal that transcends both generation and genre, cementing the band’s role as enduring musical icons.

The Eagles have sold more than 150 million albums worldwide, scored six #1 albums, and topped the singles charts five times. They earned six GRAMMY Awards, were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, in their very first year of eligibility, and received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2016.

The band’s Greatest Hits 1971-1977 is the best-selling album in history, with the RIAA certifying the collection at 38-times Platinum.  Hotel California is the third best-selling U.S. album in history, certified 26-times Platinum.  After its release in 1976, it topped the charts and earned two GRAMMY Awards for “New Kid In Town” and “Hotel California.”

The Eagles will embark on their own long road out of Eden this fall for a farewell tour expected to last into 2025.

"We know how fortunate we are, and we are truly grateful," the band said in a statement. "Everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle."

Dubbed The Long Goodbye, the Eagles' final shows will kick off Sept. 7 at Madison Square Garden in New York. Only the first handful of dates are being announced with Boston (Sept. 11), Denver (Oct. 5), Atlanta (Nov. 2) and St. Paul, Minnesota (Nov. 17) among them.

Presale tickets and VIP packages go on sale July 12; the general on-sale begins 10 a.m. local time July 14.

Also along for the jaunt will be Steely Dan, longtime contemporaries of the band who will commemorate their own five-decade-plus career.

In announcing their plans to end their "52-year odyssey," the Eagles – composed of Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit – noted they will play as many shows in each market as the audience demands, even if it requires returning to certain cities. The band will be joined onstage, as they have since the 2016 death of founding member Glenn Frey, by Vince Gill and Frey's son, Deacon.

Shortly after Frey's death at the age of 67, Henley indicated the Eagles would no longer tour. But following a pair of special classic-rock-focused festivals in 2017 – Classic West and Classic East, organized by their longtime manager Irving Azoff – they resumed regular live performances.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers and six-time Grammy winners have played more than 1,000 concerts throughout their 50 years of touring. Their recently wrapped Hotel California Tour – named for their landmark 1976 album, which they played in its entirety with a backing orchestra – grossed about $250 million over 90 shows, according to music industry trade publication Pollstar.

In thanking fans for their years of support, the band concluded, "This is our swan song, but the music goes on and on."

We’re getting to the end of the long run: The Eagles will play Little Caesars Arena on Oct. 13, part of a fall U.S. tour as the band begins to wrap up a half-century career.

Don Henley and company announced Thursday morning the Eagles are embarking on a farewell tour dubbed the Long Goodbye, starting with 13 cities this autumn and expected to run through 2025. Steely Dan has been tapped to open.

“Everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle,” the band said in a statement.

Tickets for the LCA date and the other fall shows will go on sale at 10 a.m. July 14 through Ticketmaster. A presale will start July 12.

This won’t necessarily be the final Detroit show for the Eagles, whose Motor City concert career began in 1972 as a support act for bands such as Yes and Mahavishnu Orchestra. The band indicated Thursday it plans to “perform as many shows in each market as their audience demands.”

The current Eagles lineup includes vocalist-drummer Henley, guitarist Joe Walsh and bassist Timothy B. Schmit. Also aboard is Vince Gill, who joined the group in 2017 following the death of cofounder and Detroit native Glenn Frey.

The band's full statement:

“The Eagles have had a miraculous 52-year odyssey, performing for people all over the globe; keeping the music alive in the face of tragic losses, upheavals and setbacks of many kinds. Credit and thanks go to our longtime management team, our dedicated road crew, and our exceptional backup musicians for providing skilled and steadfast support, throughout these many years.

“The difficulties of booking venues for multiple nights may require us to return to certain cities, depending on demand. But, we hope to see as many of you as we can, before we finish up. Most importantly, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for embracing this band and its music. At the end of the day, you are the reason we have been able to carry on for over five decades. Eagles Join Parade of Acts on Final Tours With a ‘Long Goodbye’

The band, which performed a “farewell” tour in 2003, will begin what’s billed as a last run of dates in September.

Five men stand in a line onstage in front of a drum set and other instruments with their arms around each other, as though saying goodbye at the end of a concert.

By Ben Sisario

Eagles are touring for the last time. Again.

The band, whose country-tinged rock hits in the 1970s like “Hotel California” and “Life in the Fast Lane” made it one of the biggest-selling acts of all time, announced the Long Goodbye on Thursday, booked as the group’s final tour.

The tour — featuring the core Eagles members Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit, along with Vince Gill and Deacon Frey (whose father was Glenn Frey, an original Eagle) — is set to open at Madison Square Garden on Sept. 7. That is the first of an initial batch of 13 dates mostly on the East Coast through Nov. 17, with Steely Dan as the opening act. In a statement, the Eagles floated the possibility of longer runs at each venue, saying they would “perform as many shows in each market as their audience demands.” The tour is expected to continue into 2025.

As longtime Eagles fans know, this is not the first time the band has signaled a sunset run. Back in 2003, it embarked on a tour called Farewell I . But there is good reason to believe they may be nearing the end. Glenn Frey, one of the group’s founding members, died in 2016 . Henley, the only member from its founding in 1971 who is still in the band, is 75; in an appearance before a Congressional committee in 2020 about copyright law, he said he was “in the final chapter of my career.” (Or maybe not. Bob Dylan, who is 82, is on a tour planned into 2024 , and the 86-year-old blues guitar hero Buddy Guy is on his own goodbye outing.)

Farewell tours have a way of winding on for years, and can be huge moneymakers. Kiss did its first in 2000 and has had more than a dozen tours since then; its End of the Road Tour started in 2019 and has dates booked through December. Elton John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour began in 2018 and is set to finally conclude this weekend in Sweden, with at least $910 million in ticket sales, according to Billboard.

Among others now on their self-described final tours are Aerosmith, Foreigner, the punk band NOFX and Dead & Company, featuring original members of the Grateful Dead with John Mayer.

“The official farewell tour is currently in the planning stages,” The Eagles shared in a statement, hinting at many more dates to come. “We want to give all our fans a chance to see us on this final round. So, scheduling information will be released as dates are set. The difficulties of booking venues for multiple nights may require us to return to certain cities, depending on demand. But, we hope to see as many of you as we can, before we finish up.”

Don Henley, Joe Walsh, and Timothy B. Schmit, with Vince Gill and Deacon Frey, plan to perform as many shows as their audience demands, potentially continuing all the way through 2025.

Over 52 years, The Eagles wrote, the band “[kept] the music alive in the face of tragic losses, upheavals and setbacks of many kinds.” They continued, “Our long run has lasted far longer than any of us ever dreamed. But, everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle.”

Steely Dan will be joining The Eagles on these historic shows, commemorating their own 50-plus-year career.

“Most importantly, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for embracing this band and its music,” the band said. “At the end of the day, you are the reason we have been able to carry on for over five decades. This is our swan song, but the music goes on and on.”

By Logan DeLoye

eagles farewell tour venues

After performing across the globe for over five decades, the Eagles just announced that they will be embarking on their final tour this year. "The Long Goodbye" is set to kick off on September 7th, 2023, and run through 2025. The band took to social media to share a heartwarming message with fans and followers, and to detail which cities they will be performing in this year.

"The official farewell tour is currently in the planning stages. We want to give all our fans a chance to see us on this final round.  So, scheduling information will be released as dates are set. The difficulties of booking venues for multiple nights may require us to return to certain cities, depending on demand.  But, we hope to see as many of you as we can, before we finish up."

Bandmates Don Henley , Joe Walsh , Timothy B. Schmit , Vince Gill , and Deacon Frey also took time to thank fans for being the fuel that has allowed the Eagles to tour for over 50 years.

"Most importantly, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for embracing this band and its music. At the end of the day, you are the reason we have been able to carry on for over five decades. This is our swan song, but the music goes on and on."

As if witnessing the pure melodic magic that is the Eagles isn't amazing enough, special guests Steely Dan will also be joining the band on tour this year! The two groups will be taking the stage in New York, New York, Boston, Massachusetts, Newark, New Jersey, Belmont Park, New York, Denver, Colorado, Indianapolis, Indiana, Detroit, Michigan, Cleveland, Ohio, Atlanta, Georgia, Charlotte, North Carolina, Raleigh, North Carolina, Lexington, Kentucky, and last but not least, St. Paul, Minnesota, on November 17th.

The Eagles have landed.

The legendary rock band has agreed to a residency at James Dolan’s Las Vegas music venue The Sphere after they finish up what was billed as their final tour this spring, The Post has learned.

Don Henley — the band’s frontman who recently expressed “regret” over a cocaine-fueled night with a 16-year-old prostitute while taking the stand in a criminal case involving the theft of the lyrics to their hit song “Hotel California” — will take the stage along with Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit over 10 weekends from September through December at the $2.3 billion state-of-the-art arena, sources close to the situation told The Post.

The total number of shows and terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed.

“We do not comment on any artists performing at Sphere except for those who have been announced,” a Sphere spokesperson told The Post on Monday.

The Post reached out to the Eagles for comment.

The band concludes its “Long Goodbye” tour on June 15 in the Netherlands.

Dolan, the owner of the Knicks and Rangers, has been courting the Eagles , managed by longtime Dolan pal Irving Azoff, since last year, The Post previously reported.

Azoff co-founded the Oak View Group, which handles marketing partnerships for The Sphere, and also manages Dead & Company’s John Mayer, the Eagles and U2, which all have been booked to play the glitzy venue.

Mayer and the Grateful Dead spinoff band were scheduled to play 24 shows from May to July but have extended their stay by another 10 dates through the end of August, sources said.

However, Dolan’s efforts to bring Beyonce to the LED-wrapped arena have apparently hit a snag — at least for this year.

The Sphere lit up for the Las Vegas Formula One race.

The two have held talks since last November, with Queen Bey, her husband, Jay-Z, and her manager-mom, Tina Knowles, all touring the site, as The Post previously reported .

Buzz about a possible deal surged last month when the “Single Ladies” singer was featured in a Super Bowl ad for Verizon — showing Beyonce on a horse that was perched atop The Sphere.

The hang-up for a deal could be over Dolan’s hesitancy to splash out the millions needed to attract Beyonce and produce the high-tech shows that fit The Sphere, once source speculated.

The media mogul paid roughly $10 million to U2 for their extravagant production to open the arena last September. Bono and the band closed the last of their 40 shows earlier this month.

Shares in the Dolan-run parent company that owns The Sphere are up more than 40% year to date. They were down slightly on Monday, trading at around $47.

Henley, meanwhile, had taken a break from the Eagles tour earlier this month to testify in a Manhattan court in a trial involving three men accused of a scheme involving the allegedly stolen “Hotel California” lyrics.

The case” imploded mid-trial after  Henley  disclosed new evidence that cast doubt on the prosecution.

Bob Weir on guitar and singing.

In a stunning turn of events, Justice Curtis Farber dropped the charges faced by rare-books dealer Glenn Horowitz, ex-Rock & Roll Hall of Fame curator Craig Inciardi and memorabilia seller Edward Kosinki — finding that Henley “manipulated” Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office by failing to turn over 6,000 pages of key evidence until midway through the trial.

Henley and his lawyers tried to weaponize their attorney-client privilege to “hide information that they believed would be damaging,” Farber said at a hearing in Manhattan Supreme Court on March 6.

Eagles co-founder Don Henley on Monday candidly recounted the cocaine-fueled night when he was busted with a 16-year-old prostitute at his Los Angeles home — calling it a “regret” he still lives with more than four decades later as he took the stand in Manhattan court.

While taking the stand, the 76-year-old Henley was asked about his 1980 arrest shortly after the band broke up.

Henley admitted the breakup made him depressed, prompting him to call a “madam” to provide him with “some company.”

Among those was an underage prostitute who suffered a seizure after a night of coke-fueled commiserating , he admitted.

“I wanted to forget about everything that was happening with the band,” Henley said. “I made a poor decision which I regret to this day. I’ve had to live with it for 44 years. I’m still living with it today in this courtroom.”

The Eagles Announce ‘The Long Goodbye’ Farewell Tour Dates, Steely Dan to Support

The Eagles have just announced a series of 2023 tour dates, the first on their The Long Goodbye farewell tour. Fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Fame act Steely Dan have been tabbed as support for the fall run.

Much like Deep Purple 's own The Long Goodbye tour, the trek does not have a set end date, though The Eagles are expected to be on the road through 2025 and will "perform as many shows in each marker at their audience demands," per a press release.

The band is currently comprised of Don Henley , Joe Walsh , Timothy B. Schmit, Vince Gill and Deacon Frey.

The first batch of dates features a total of 13 stops between Sept. 7 and Nov. 17, all of which can be seen further down the page.

Reflecting on their massively successful 50-plus year career and the upcoming farewell jaunt, The Eagles released the following statement:

The Eagles have had a miraculous 52-year odyssey, performing for people all over the globe; keeping the music alive in the face of tragic losses, upheavals and setbacks of many kinds. Credit and thanks go to our longtime management team, our dedicated road crew, and our exceptional backup musicians for providing skilled and steadfast support, throughout these many years. We know how fortunate we are, and we are truly grateful. Our long run has lasted far longer than any of us ever dreamed. But, everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle. The official farewell tour is currently in the planning stages. We want to give all our fans a chance to see us on this final round. So, scheduling information will be released as dates are set. The difficulties of booking venues for multiple nights may require us to return to certain cities, depending on demand. But, we hope to see as many of you as we can, before we finish up. Most importantly, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for embracing this band and its music. At the end of the day, you are the reason we have been able to carry on for over five decades. This is our swan song, but the music goes on and on. With love and gratitude, The Eagles

Will The Eagles perform in Florida?

That's unknown at this time.

The band announced the farewell tour is still in the planning stages.

"We want to give all our fans a chance to see us on this final round.  So, scheduling information will be released as dates are set.

"We hope to see as many of you as we can, before we finish up," adding that the group will play as many shows in each market as the audience demands, even if it requires returning to certain cities.

The Eagles brought their Hotel California Tour to Florida in March of this year, performing in Jacksonville and Tampa.

Eagles Florida performances: Eagles bringing Hotel California Tour to Jacksonville, Tampa

Who will be onstage for The Eagles performances?

Steely Dan, longtime contemporaries of the band who will commemorate their own five-decade-plus career, will be part of the tour.

The Eagles — composed of Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit — will be joined onstage, as they have since the  2016 death of founding member  Glenn Frey, by Vince Gill and Frey's son, Deacon.

Who has skipped over Florida on their most recent tours?

Multiple artists have breezed past Florida on their recent tours and opted for other southern cities. Not everyone can make the drive up to Atlanta or New Orleans to see their favorite artist, which means a concert also includes buying a plane ticket and a hotel room for the night.

Whether it's for logistics or not enough, here are some artists who didn't come to Florida on their current or most recent tour:

  • Olivia Rodrigo : The "Vampire " songstress broke streaming records and won multiple Grammys for her 2021 debut album "Sour." However, when it came to her first headlining tour in 2022, it came as a brutal surprise for Florida fans to see zero stops for us. There is hope that the 21-year-old will finally perform in Florida when she tours with her sophomore album this September, "Guts."
  • Boygenius : The trio — composed of indie powerhouses Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus — set off on tour earlier this summer to promote their album "the record." Clips of the singers performing their hit songs and joking around on stage have gone viral on social media. Yet, Florida is nowhere on their tour date schedule and is left out of the inside jokes.
  • Foo Fighters : The Seattle-based rock bank is currently touring internationally. They returned this year to the scene with " But Here We Are ," their first album since the sudden death of drummer Taylor Hawkins in 2022. During the U.S. leg of the tour, there were no Florida dates.
  • Metallica : The iconic American heavy metal band is taking their M72 world tour to the U.S. in August in New Jersey. It promises over 77 minutes of music with 12 new songs for fans to bang their heads to. Despite the long list of cities and venues, Florida didn't make the list.
  • Dead & Company : Heading off on their final tour , the impressive line-up of former Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann, along with John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge, and Jeff Chiment have left off Florida on their last stops. It is also worth noting they canceled their previous 2021 Florida tour dates due to routing and production logistics. They released a statement apologizing and offering refunds, adding that "Dead & Company is looking forward to performing in West Palm Beach and Tampa in the future.”

The Eagles are ready to fly one last time, soaring for a farewell tour this fall to cap off their five decades of touring.

“The Eagles have had a miraculous 52-year odyssey, performing for people all over the globe; keeping the music alive in the face of tragic losses, upheavals and setbacks of many kinds,” the “Hotel California” and “Desperado” hitmakers said in a Thursday statement .

“We know how fortunate we are, and we are truly grateful. Our long run has lasted far longer than any of us ever dreamed. But, everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle.”

The Los Angeles-formed rock band — eternally associated with the Southern California country-rock sound — will launch their Long Goodbye tour in New York’s Madison Square Garden on Sept. 7, announcing 12 additional dates Thursday with the possibility of more to come. However, no California dates have yet been announced.

“The official farewell tour is currently in the planning stages. We want to give all our fans a chance to see us on this final round. So, scheduling information will be released as dates are set,” said the band, whose current lineup includes drummer and vocalist Don Henley, famed guitarist Joe Walsh, bassist Timothy B. Schmit and guitarist Vince Gill. Gill joined the band after founding member and guitarist Glenn Frey died at 67 in 2016 . (Frey’s son Deacon also played with the band for nearly five years before announcing his departure in 2022 .)

“The difficulties of booking venues for multiple nights may require us to return to certain cities, depending on demand. But, we hope to see as many of you as we can, before we finish up,” they said. “Most importantly, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for embracing this band and its music. At the end of the day, you are the reason we have been able to carry on for over five decades. This is our swan song, but the music goes on and on.”

The six-time Grammy Award-winning group and Rock and Roll Hall of Famers will be joined by contemporary act Steely Dan, whose members will be commemorating their own half-century spanning career as well.

The bands have scheduled shows through mid-November in Boston, Newark, Denver, Indianapolis, Detroit, Cleveland, Atlanta, Charlotte and Raleigh, N.C., Lexington, Ky., and St. Paul, Minn. The Long Goodbye tour follows their recently expanded Hotel California tour , named for their landmark 1976 album that they played in its entirety during the tour, which wrapped in Baltimore in April.

The Eagles have reportedly agreed to a residency at James Dolan’s $2.3 billion music venue The Sphere in Las Vegas after their “Long Goodbye” tour , which ends in the Netherlands and was originally touted as the band’s final tour, according to The New York Post .

The band’s frontman Don Henley will be joined by Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit for 10 weekends beginning in September through December though the total number of shows and terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed, sources close to the situation told The Post.

The Post reported that a spokesperson for The Sphere did not comment on any artists who will be performing at the venue unless it has already been announced.

Dolan has reportedly been courting the Eagles since last year. Meanwhile, Dead & Company were originally scheduled to play 24 shows at the spherical theater from May to July, but extended their stay by another 10 dates through the end of August, according to sources.

There were initial reports that Dolan attempted to bring Beyoncé to The Sphere though plans for that have since stalled.

The first band to play at The Sphere was U2 with their last show earlier this month.

The Eagles stopped in Newark’s Prudential Center last April for its “Hotel California” April, while it performed at he same venue for its “Long Goodbye” tour last September.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band said its upcoming "The Long Goodbye" will be the band's final tour.

The Eagles — Don Henley, Joe Walsh, Timothy B. Schmit, with Vince Gill and Deacon Frey — said the band "will perform as many shows in each market as their audience demands."

The band will visit Ball Arena in Denver on Thursday, Oct. 5 , and Friday, Oct. 6 . Tickets are on sale now at Ticketmaster.com .

The Eagles’ contemporaries Steely Dan will be joining the final tour.

The tour is expected to continue into 2025.

The band’s "Greatest Hits 1971-1977" is the best-selling album in history. "Hotel California" is the third best-selling U.S. album in history.

"The Eagles have had a miraculous 52-year odyssey, performing for people all over the globe; keeping the music alive in the face of tragic losses, upheavals and setbacks of many kinds," the band said in a statement. "Credit and thanks go to our longtime management team, our dedicated road crew, and our exceptional backup musicians for providing skilled and steadfast support, throughout these many years.

"We know how fortunate we are, and we are truly grateful. Our long run has lasted far longer than any of us ever dreamed. But, everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle.

"The official farewell tour is currently in the planning stages. We want to give all our fans a chance to see us on this final round.  So, scheduling information will be released as dates are set. The difficulties of booking venues for multiple nights may require us to return to certain cities, depending on demand.  But, we hope to see as many of you as we can, before we finish up.

"Most importantly, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for embracing this band and its music. At the end of the day, you are the reason we have been able to carry on for over five decades. This is our swan song, but the music goes on and on."

The Eagles return to iconic California venue for a night of tributes, cameos, and peaceful, easy feelings

As they bid farewell to the Forum, the band is giving the best of their love.

The Eagles may be saying goodbye, but they're leaving fans with a peaceful, easy feeling.

For those who've been to one of the group's shows since member Glenn Frey 's death in 2016, their Long Goodbye farewell tour will offer a familiar balm. But if much of the set list (the greatest hits we all want to hear), the video projections, and the lineup remain the same, the Eagles continue to bring the best of their love to fans as they prepare to wrap their decades-long journey on the road (supposedly).

Currently in the midst of a four-show sold-out run at Los Angeles' Kia Forum, the band still has the capacity to surprise and soothe. On Saturday night, frontman Don Henley reflected on the fact that the evening marked their 24th outing at the venue over the course of 49 years. "This is our home field and you're the home team," he mused. "At this stage of the game, we're delighted to be pretty much anywhere."

Here, five highlights you can expect from their Long Goodbye California concerts.

J.D. Souther

Though the Eagles launched their farewell tour, The Long Goodbye, last fall, they have a special surprise guest in tow for their Forum shows: original songwriter J.D. Souther. Though Souther was never an official member of the group, he was responsible for some of their biggest hits, including "Best of My Love" and "Heartache Tonight." Most notably, he wrote three of their five No. 1 singles.

Souther joined the Eagles for two of the songs he helped write, "Best of My Love" and "New Kid in Town," during Saturday's performance. While the band has lost several members over the years, they have also maintained an understanding of their own history — and seeing Souther, who has helped define their SoCal country-rock sound, felt like a little piece of the universe falling back into its rightful place, even if only for a few moments. To cap off the night, Souther rejoined the group for the show's final song, "Heartache Tonight," sending the crowd out into the brisk January night on a playful, celebratory note.

Tributes to late friends

What would a farewell tour be without honoring some of the musicians who've left us? Following Frey's death in 2016, the Eagles' shows have had a touch of melancholy, a deference to their late brother. That's still there, in a tribute to his beloved track "Peaceful Easy Feeling," sung by his son Deacon. As they've done since the Classic West show in 2017, the Eagles end the number with a photo of Frey and his guitar projected behind them.

But they've seen more losses. Henley noted the death of longtime bass player Randy Meisner in 2023, dedicating "Take It to the Limit," for which Meisner sang the original vocals, to their late colleague.

The Long Goodbye shows are also a tribute to the 1970s as a whole, with Steely Dan kicking off Saturday night with an hour of tunes; Henley called the groups "'70s survivors." That meant honoring more late friends, specifically Jimmy Buffett , who died last September. Buffett and his Coral Reefer band opened for the Eagles in 1975 and joined them on tour in 2018, and the Eagles played at Buffett's wedding to his second wife, Jane, in 1977. Fittingly, Henley dedicated his solo track "The Boys of Summer" to Buffett, who practically embodied the season with his Margaritaville lifestyle.

Deacon Frey comes into his own

After Glenn Frey died, the band surmised that the Eagles' touring days were over. But they decided to give live performances without him a shot at Classic West, bringing out Frey's then 24-year-old son, Deacon, to sing a few of his dad's tunes. At that point, Deacon was a timid kid in a Dodgers jersey. But he's spent eight years performing with the group (minus a brief exit in 2022) and honing his craft — and this farewell tour could be considered his coming-out party.

Previously, Deacon was often buoyed by the original members' backup vocals, while much of the heavy lifting was left to country singer Vince Gill, who also stepped in to fill Frey's shoes. Now Deacon's voice is the richest, most resonant of the bunch, confident and soulful on songs like "Take It Easy" and "Peaceful Easy Feeling." Apart from the visible age difference (though at the right angle, it's easy to envision Deacon as his father at his 1970s peak, shoulder-length hair and mustache included), he could easily pass as a member of the band. If this truly is the end for the Eagles, let's hope it's just the beginning for Deacon.

Don Henley in top form

Maybe it's the feeling that this is really goodbye, but the tour finds Henley more energized and keyed in than he's been in a long time. Though the band kept their introductions and banter to a minimum, Henley seemed genuinely verklempt at the opportunity to entertain generations of fans. He opened the show announcing that the group was there "to give you a two-hour vacation from all the chaos and turmoil going on in the world." They succeeded.

And when he took to the middle of the stage, a single spotlight illuminating him against a cascade of digital stars, to sing "Desperado," the concert's penultimate number, he seemed to transcend time and space, linking eras of Eagle lovers who packed the sold-out Forum. His voice conveyed both the youthful arrogance of the original 1973 recording of the track and the life experience of nearly 50 years of performing. At that moment, Henley didn't just let somebody love him — he let all of us in.

Joe Walsh gonna Joe Walsh

Rock and roll has no shortage of cutups and characters in its ranks, but few are as divinely silly as Joe Walsh. Dubbed the "Clown Prince of Rock," Walsh is still up to his signature antics at 76 years old, pulling faces while he shreds and enlisting the audience for a call-and-response on "Life's Been Good." It's still hard to decide what's more fun — watching Walsh play as one of the greatest guitarists to ever do it, or soaking in his effervescent, impish energy as he refuses to grow up.

The Eagles will continue their farewell tour, The Long Goodbye, throughout 2024.
