6 Best Ferry Rides Seattle In 2023

By: Author Aisha Preece

Want to know the best ferry rides in Seattle? Spoiled for choice? Don’t worry – read here to find out the best!

If you’re planning a trip to Seattle – or you’re already there – you might be wondering about fun and cool things to do!

Well, why not take a ferry ride somewhere?

It might not be something you’ve thought of yet, and you could end up on a great day out!

Seattle is packed with great ferry rides, so it can be hard to know which one (or which ones!) to choose – but don’t worry about being spoiled for choice!

I’ve had a look and found some of the best ferry rides and day trips available in Seattle – so you don’t have to waste your time scouring the internet!

So, if you’re interested in finding out what the best Seattle ferries are available, read on!

1.Seattle To Bainbridge Island

2.fauntleroy to vashon island, 3.anacortes to san juan islands, 4.seattle to bremerton, 5.edmonds to kingston, 6.seattle to victoria, british columbia, 6 best ferry rides in seattle.

Departing from Pier 52, also known as Colman Dock, and travelling over the Puget Sound with a beautiful view of the skyline of Seattle at your rear, this trip will take you just 35 minutes to reach Bainbridge Island, Washington – the second largest city in Kitsap County.

The downtown area, Winslow, is the location of the ferry terminal here, and in fact was the original name of the entire city of Bainbridge Island – after the shipbuilder WInslow Hall.

Bainbridge Island is a beautiful city – although with a population of only 23,000 on the entire island, it’s far smaller than Seattle!

It’s a beautiful place, with several gardens and museums to visit – and of course, some beautiful natural scenery!

You can also do some interesting activities on Bainbridge Island, such as birdwatching, sea kayaking, scuba diving, and hiking – making it a great place for a mini adventure!

Just south of West Seattle – itself separated from the rest of the city by the Duwamish River – lies the ferry terminal at Fauntleroy.

From here, you can ride a ferry to Vashon Island, which is only accessible by ferry. Vashon Island is a popular destination for cyclists, with some great riding hills.

However, they can be a tough call for some riders! Most people prefer, therefore, to experience Vashon Island by car.

You could get on the ferry on foot, but many parts of the island would just take too long to access without a car or bike!

Vashon Island is a great getaway for those looking to spend some time in a quieter, more calming place – or those looking to do some serious cycling!

Other activities are of course available here, including kayaking and scuba diving – in fact, the entire Puget Sound area is famed for having some of the best scuba diving waters in the world!

Anacortes To San Juan Islands

North of Seattle lies the city of Anacortes, itself a beautiful place, and a great city for boating activities, with an award winning marina.

It also has its own ferry terminus, which will let you take a trip over to the San Juan islands!

From Anacortes, you can take ferries directly to four of the islands – Shaw, Orcas, Lopez, and San Juan Island.

These are the four main islands, and are also connected to each other by Washington State Ferries. These islands are amazingly popular for boating, especially for small boats.

Many towns here are great places for boaters to visit, and indeed many of the nicest spots around these islands can only be reached by boat.

In fact, although the ferries only go to 4 islands here – the four biggest – there are actually 176 islands in the area that are large enough to be named!

Located on the Kitsap Peninsula, Bremerton is to the southwest of Bainbridge Island, and is a great place to visit that’s not too far from the city of Seattle – meaning that it’s easily possible to have a great day trip here and still make it back for the evening!

Once in the city itself, there’s plenty to see and do – those with military interests will particularly like the Puget Sound Navy Museum!

Similarly, there’s also the USS Turner Joy, a Destroyer from the era of the Vietnam War.

Those looking for a more natural pursuit in their time in and around Bremerton will enjoy the Illahee State Park and the Green Mountain State Forest, two of the most beautiful natural environments in the area.

Edmonds To Kingston

Another beautiful little town across the water from Seattle, Kingston is another great place to visit in the Puget Sound region.

It’s pretty easy to get to from the Seattle area, as Washington State Ferries runs a service from West Edmonds over to Kingston.

If you like, you can walk on this ferry – there are buses and taxis available to take you around Kingston once you get there!

If you’re a birdwatcher, anywhere in Kitsap Country is a great place to visit – and of course, Kingston is no exception!

There are hundreds of species that one could see in the area – in fact, there’s a good list here !

If you’re looking to go a little further afar, why not go to the next country over?

It’s possible to get a ferry all the way up to Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada, in just around 3 hours!

Riding the Victoria Clipper, which completes a round trip between Seattle and Vancouver every day for much of the year, you can be in the beautiful city of Vancouver in just 2 hours and 45 minutes.

You’ll need your passport for this one, of course, and it’s one of the longer waterway journeys on the list – but a trip to Canada is well worth it!

Vancouver is an amazing city, and what’s more, it’s the gateway to the rest of British Columbia – one of the most spectacular areas of natural beauty in the world – and the size of many countries on its own!

As you can see, there are many great places that are easy to get to with just a short ferry ride from Seattle, or the surrounding area.

So if you’re looking for something new and interesting to do in the area – or just want to get away form the city for a bit – then why not try out one of these great journeys?

I hope you’ll have a great time!

5 Best Ferry Rides in Seattle

Moving from Seattle to other points in the state of Washington is easier, thanks to the Washington State ferry system.

Although local Seattleites see these ferries as yet another transportation option, tourists, just like me, enjoy unleashing the full potential of what these ferries have to offer.

It’s time to dive deep into the magic hidden places near Seattle, WA, with the help of ferries!

Let’s check out the 5 best ferry rides in Seattle with up-to-date prices, locations, and route information.

The MV Hyak, a retired Washington State ferry vessel, sails along the water in front of the Seattle skyline during a sunset. The Seattle space needle is visible on the right and the Climate Pledge Arena is visible on the left. The sky is a burning orange color from the sunset.

3 Tips to Make the Best of Your Seattle Ferry Ride Adventure

Before you embark on a new journey through the waters of Seattle, there are three tips and recommendations that will help you to improve your experience:

  • Pick the right ferry seats: It’s not always easy to pick the perfect seats during your ferry ride, but if you are lucky enough, and weather permits, you should choose an outside deck seat at the top of the ferry. Here, you can take great pictures, enjoy the landscape, and have a boat trip like no other. Avoid inner section seats – they are the worst!
  • Plan ahead: Some town destinations might require you to have your passport and hand. Other destinations can only be visited if you make advanced reservations. Therefore, make sure to perform your own research so that you can go as prepared as possible.
  • Make an itinerary: There are several things to see, places to visit, and spots to discover in the multiple destination towns connected by Seattle ferry rides. Whether you want to see the city, ride a bike, or camp in a park, make sure to make an itinerary, so you don’t end up missing these marvelous experiences.

5 Best Ferry Rides in Seattle You Can Take This Weekend

Taking a ferry from the shores of Seattle is not only a magical experience , but it is also an easy one.

Forget about complicated processes – going on a ferry ride in Seattle is simple, quick, and really fun . Nonetheless, you must go prepared.

I have experienced Seattle ferry rides several times, so I’ll give you my expert tips so you can have updated information and unique insights into the best ferry rides in Seattle.

1. Fauntleroy to Vashon Island Ferry

Fauntleroy is a neighborhood located in west Seattle. A short, 20 minute ferry ride connects it directly with Vashon Island.

The ferry route is 3.3 miles long and takes about 20 minutes to arrive at the North-End Ferry Terminal on Vashon Island . From there, you’ll surely want to continue to the more “interesting parts” of the island

This short ferry ride is amusing and full of awesome things to look for. Vashon Island is big and rustic. Visitors often rent bikes to explore the beautiful island in all its glory.

You can have some fun by going from north to south of the island, but you’ll probably need a car to explore locations that are not within walking or bike riding distance from the island’s main points.

Check out the Fauntleroy – Vashon Ferry schedule to plan your trip.

2. Seattle to Whidbey Island Ferry

Looking to get from Seattle to Whidbey Island by ferry? Look no further than the fabulous Mukilteo-Clinton Ferry .

The Mukilteo ferry, located 25 miles north of the Seattle area, connects you with Clinton, Washington on the southern end of Whidbey Island, the largest of Washington state’s coastal islands.

The ferry ride is short at only 3.7 miles and a 20 minute crossing time. However, once on the Whidbey Island, there are many things to see and explore that will delight tourists.

I recommend you visit the Spoiled Dog Winery and then head north Deception Pass State Park , which separates Whidbey Island from Fidalgo Island.

3. Seattle to Bainbridge Island Ferry

The ferry ride from Seattle to Bainbridge Island takes you on a quick trip where you can see the Seattle skyline by day or night and, if you are lucky enough on your ride, enjoy the wonders of the marine wildlife swimming about the water.

A variety of houses along the sandy shoreline and foothills of Bainbridge island. Behind them are a lush, dense forest of conifer trees. In the distant background are the Olympic Mountains covered in snow.

You can catch the Seattle to Bainbridge ferry from Colman Dock in Seattle daily, from Sunday to Saturday, but you need to plan ahead in order to catch a departure time that works for you.

The island is a beautiful 65 miles of open land location where people ride bikes, go hiking, camp, and enjoy nature in a unique way.

There are several artsy towns where you can take pictures and dive deep into the marvels of an underestimated state full of life and beautiful landscapes.

The route is 9.7 miles with a crossing time of 35 minutes.

4. Seattle to Bremerton Ferry

The Seattle to Bremerton Ferry route is one of the most popular ferry routes in the State of Washington because it connects two beautiful places in a fun and enjoyable boat trip.

Washington State Ferries go from the Seattle Waterfront Terminal Colman Dock to Bremerton, located on the Kitsap Peninsula.

There are many things to see and discover on the Seattle to Bremerton ferry ride. You can experience the great Seattle skyline, go to the Puget Sound Navy Museum in the Puget Sound Region, and see the great USS Turner Joy navy destroyer docked forever in Kitsap County.

I personally feel this ferry ride is a water taxi for one reason: you don’t need a car to explore Bremerton. You can either move around on a bike, or walk from one interesting point to another.

The distance covered by the Bremerton ferry is approximately 16 miles and the trip has a crossing time of 1 hour.

5. Seattle to Victoria, B.C. Ferry

You can take the Seattle-Victoria, B.C. ferry from Pier 69 in downtown Seattle. It is possible to park your car at the Bell Street Pier Garage for $10 per calendar day.

Keep in mind that you are going from Washington State to Canada – therefore, you will need a valid passport to complete this ride.

All in all, the British Columbia area is a beautiful place to visit, and thanks to this private ferry service, you can have a great adventure like no other.

The Seattle to Victoria, B.C. Ferry is the only one on our list not operated by Washington State Ferries.

Check out the schedule on their official website to plan your trip the trip.

This is the longest ferry ride in Seattle . It covers a distance of 90.9 miles and takes 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete!

What’s the best ferry ride in Seattle to take in 2023?

It depends on what you are looking for: do you want to explore natural, untouched landscapes at San Juan, or go on a quick ride through Washington State?

In my personal preference , the best ferry ride in Seattle is the Seattle to Bremerton ride – it is quick, really fun, and cheap!

Needless to say, you are now ready to experience all the best ferry rides Seattle has to offer by yourself and decide which one will be your favorite.

Not necessarily – you may leave your car once you take a Washington State Ferry in Seattle. First-time riders can enjoy their trip on the ferry as other walk-on passengers, so it is not necessary to stay in your car at all.

The Best Seattle Boat Tours

After exploring Seattle on land, snap photos of its skyline from a boat.

There's no better way to admire the stunning Seattle waterfront than from a boat. A variety of boat tours – from kid-friendly sightseeing cruises to romantic sunset sails – allow visitors to take in all the sights while enjoying a fresh sea breeze. Relying on expert input and traveler sentiment, U.S. News compiled four of the best Seattle boat tours.

Argosy Cruises – Locks Cruise

Price: Adults from $54; kids from $25 Duration: 2 hours

Enjoy the unique experience of passing through the Ballard Locks on this two-hour, one-way cruise. As you transition from the freshwater of Lake Union to the saltwater of Puget Sound, you'll hear live narration about Seattle's history and maritime industry from an onboard guide. Along the way, you'll pass some of the Emerald City's top sights, including the Space Needle , Olympic Sculpture Park and Gas Works Park, among others. Note that the cruise is one way, meaning it ends at a different location than it starts. You'll be dropped off at Pier 54 on the Seattle waterfront or AGC Marina on Lake Union. You can choose where you'd like to depart from when you book your tickets. You can also pay extra for bus transportation back to your starting point. Reviewers applaud the onboard guides, praising their knowledge of the region and their eagerness to answer questions and point out landmarks. Travelers were also pleased with the comfortable, clean boat. Some recommended avoiding the return bus service describing it as inconvenient, and instead suggested opting for your own transportation.

Tickets start at $54 for adults and $25 for kids ages 4 to 12 (children 3 and younger ride for free). Tour schedules vary depending on date and time of year; in the summer months, you can expect tours to be offered twice a day at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. Argosy Cruises also offers harbor sightseeing tours.

Sailing Seattle – Sunset Sail

Price: Adults from $62; kids from $49 Duration: 2 hours

Head out for a two-hour sail on a custom 70-foot yacht to admire the downtown Seattle skyline as the sun sets. Described by reviewers as "peaceful" and a "must-do," this laid-back cruise does not include a guided commentary and does not follow a set route – the tour's course is dictated by wind direction and boat traffic on Elliott Bay. Visitors are allowed to bring any food or beverages they want on board (though glassware is prohibited, glass bottles are OK). The crew also recommends bringing a jacket or sweater in case it gets chilly – a suggestion echoed by reviewers. A word to the wise: Since the yachts were built for racing, bench seating is limited, and visitors might have to sit on the deck.

Tours are offered late April through early October. The exact sailing schedule varies by the day and month. Tickets start at $62 for adults and $49 for children ages 5 to 12. The company also operates daytime sails in the waters surrounding the city, as well as a two-hour sail on Puget Sound.

Travelers say the trip is relaxing and lots of fun, even for locals. Another highlight is seeing the houseboat featured in "Sleepless in Seattle."

Tickets start at $50 and include one drink. The one-hour cruise is offered eight times a day, though exact availability may vary by day. Candére Cruising also offers private outings, sunset cruises and day sails on Puget Sound.

Travelers praise the attentive, friendly crew and the beautiful boat. They also say the views of Seattle and the sound are amazing.

The company sails daily, though exact times vary by day. The sailing season runs from the end of April to the end of October. Tickets start at $45 for adults and $35 for kids ages 2 to 12. Any purchases made on board cost extra. Seattle's Tall Ship also offers a sunset sail, in addition to private charters.

Reviews 7. Victoria Clipper This is the quickest, easiest, and most scenic way to get from Seattle to beautiful Victoria, British Columbia. The Victoria Clipper departs daily from Pier 69 on the downtown waterfront, with 2-3 sailings per day during the busy summer months. You can head up and back in one day, or spend the night in Victoria – the company offers packages that include hotel and admission to popular attractions like Butchart Gardens. The boats are clean and comfortable, though those folks who are prone to seasickness will want to take precautions – the ride can get a bit choppy once you’re out in open waters. Buy tickets online in advance to avoid waiting in line, and don’t forget to bring a passport. Kenmore Air also offers whale watching excursions and summer service to Friday Harbor in Washington’s San Juan Islands. Tours depart from Pier 69 on Seattle’s downtown waterfront. Reviews

Grey’s anatomy seattle tour – all the tv scene locations.

If you’re a self-proclaimed couch potato like myself, and have spent a SICK amount of your life watching all 14 15 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy… You’ve come to the right post!

Oh Grey’s Anatomy… I have such a love/hate relationship with you. I hate you more than ANYTHING when you kill off every character I’ve ever loved, yet. Here we are, still tuning in every Thursday night.

I traveled to Seattle and got to see all of the famous scenes of Grey’s Anatomy come to life. This Grey’s Anatomy Seattle Tour is easily doable in a 3 day weekend, covering all the most notable stops… cue Grey’s Anatomy theme song.

Psssst… I created a 3 day Seattle Itinerary, which includes all of these stops! You can check it out here: 3 Day Weekend in Seattle!

Grey’s Anatomy Seattle Tour Stops

Grey’s anatomy ferry in seattle.

What better way to kick off this Grey’s anatomy tour than the famous Ferry ride across Puget Sound! They film hundreds of scenes throughout the series of the cast on the ferry with the notorious Seattle Skyline in the background.

You can take an $8 ferry ride across the Puget Sound to Bainbridge island ! The ferry ride is only a quick 35 minute ride and you can reenact the famous scenes of Meredith Grey looking off into the distance. Plus, hanging out at Bainbridge Island for the day doesn’t suck!

To buy a ferry ticket, you will need to look up times in advance and purchase a ticket at the ferry stand before getting on. They rarely sell out, so I don’t think it’s necessary to purchase one in advance. Click here for the daily ferry times .

You can easily spend hours wandering Bainbridge Island, spending time on their walking and hiking trails or in their adorable downtown area. The downtown area of Bainbridge is filled with wine bars and trendy restaurants to try out.

Do you like wine tasting? I like wine tasting sooo much that I dedicated an entire section of my blog to boozy travel… See exhibit A , B , & C 🙂

Kerry Park in Grey’s Anatomy

Kerry Park is only a 15 minute drive outside of downtown Seattle and you get another priceless view of the Seattle skyline! A lot of scenes, especially from their newest, 15th season, is filmed here.

This park can get crowded, especially at sunset, but the park is long and narrow. You can easily get a photo without anyone in the background.

I loved this spot the most because not only do you get to see a famous Grey’s Anatomy filming location in Seattle, but you also get to see the best view of the Seattle skyline!

Grey’s Anatomy Intern House in Seattle

Meredith Grey’s “Intern House” where they continue to live throughout all the seasons, is located just a five minute walk from Kerry Park. Nestled in the Queen Anne Neighborhood at 303 W Comstock St , you can walk on the same door step as Meredith Grey, Alex Karev, Derek Shepherd, Izzie Stevens, Cristina Yang & George O’Malley!

Please make sure you are respectful of the house because it is private property. You can easily snap a couple of pictures from the street or bottom of the steps!

Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital in Seattle

Recognize that helicopter pad!?

The famous helicopter / rooftop scenes are filmed on KOMO plaza at 140 4th Ave N . Would you believe this isn’t even a real hospital? Komo Plaza is a shopping center located directly next to the Space Needle.

If you plan on seeing the Space Needle on your trip to Seattle, pay attention on the short 14 second elevator ride to the top. During the glass elevator ride to the top, the employee escorting you up will point out the helicopter pad!

Even though you won’t be able to see the front of Grey Sloan Memorial in Seattle, the rooftop is spot on. Most of the scenes from inside the hospital are filmed in Los Angeles on set.. #rude

Best Time to Travel to Seattle

Since most of these sites are outside, I think it’s important to mention the best time to go to Seattle! While it’s known to rain like, 90% of the year…. that’s  the charm of going! When I went, I had sunny weather on 2/3 of the days, and I actually wished it was gloomier! Just make sure you bring a little travel-sized umbrella to fit in your purse when you are exploring the city!

I traveled to Seattle in the fall (end of September) and it was magical! All the leaves were beginning to change colors and fall and the crowds were minimal. If you branch out of the city to see the coast, Olympic National Park or hike some waterfalls, I would plan to go in the summer when the weather is at its warmest.

Where to stay in Seattle

If you want the full Grey’s Anatomy experience, you can book an Airbnb right in Meredith Grey’s neighborhood! If you search Kerry Park as the location, you will find a lot of houses and apartments you can stay at. Here’s an example !

Hey , is it your first time using Airbnb?! Click here for $40 off your first stay !

What to Pack for Seattle

Other than my  10 travel essentials I can’t live without , these are my top 3 recommendations for a trip to Seattle:

1.  Travel size umbrella

It’s no secret that it rains a lot in Seattle! It is green for a reason! I bring a travel size umbrella on ALL my trips because it’s so small and fits in my over-the-shoulder purse if I need it. I got mine on amazon for extremely inexpensive and comes in a ton of different colors.  Click here for the umbrella I bought !

2.  Light Rain coat

It rains almost year round in Seattle, so regardless of the season you travel in, I would bring a light rain coat/wind breaker with you that you can easily throw over whatever outfit you’re in. I live in the desert where it NEVER rains, so I bought the least expensive one I could find.  Click here for the rain coat I bought !

3.  Rain boots

Rain boots are something I didn’t bring but regretted I didn’t. There is a lot of walking in any big city, especially if you are staying in the downtown area. You will want shoes that are waterproof and dry quickly.  Click here for an affordable pair of rain boots !

I hope you had as much fun as I did exploring all the famous scenes I’ve watched over the past 15 years! Not only is this city an amazing place to wander around, a lot of these sites will be very close to other famous sites. I have a full guide on spending a three day weekend in Seattle that covers all of these spots and much more, you can read it here !

Did I miss any stops on my Grey’s Anatomy tour in Seattle? Let me know in the comments below so I can check them out on my next trip to Seattle!
