Harbour Hotel Salcombe
Perched on the edge of the Salcombe Estuary, with views out to sea, our hotel has a fabulous seafood restaurant, a chilled-out bar and rooftop terrace looking out onto the water, and a luxury spa with pool-side cabanas. It's no wonder the hotel has been named as one of the UK's best hotels in the Conde Nast Traveller 2023 Readers' Choice Awards and The Times called it one of the coolest places to stay.
Consistently winning awards as one of the best seaside hotels in the UK, this spa hotel, with an unrivalled position on the water’s edge of Salcombe’s tranquil estuary, is a postcard-perfect seaside getaway. Salcombe Estuary and the harbour have been named an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
For foodies, the hotel’s excellent in-house restaurant is a casual, all-day seafood bar and grill, serving breakfast, lunch, dinner - and an ever-popular afternoon tea - in the restaurant and lounge or outside on the terrace, all with estuary views. Dishes showcase the region’s finest flavours, using local produce and seasonal ingredients.
For health and wellness seekers, the hotel’s spa has five treatment rooms, a heated indoor pool, a hot tub, sauna and fitness area. The spa has partnered with Temple Spa to offer their top-of-the-range treatments and products as well as developing their very own HarSPA treatment range. There is also a compact gym for those wanting a more energetic experience.
For those wanting to get out and about, there are local beaches, numerous great coastal walks and the quaint, boutique-filled streets of Salcombe town close by. The hotel has a map of the best local walks and beaches, and can provide, on request, a sumptuous picnic and complimentary bikes to take with you. The hotel can also arrange a wide selection of water-based activities on the estuary.
A short ferry ride across the estuary will take you to the popular market town of Kingsbridge. For those wanting to go further afield, the landscapes of Dartmoor National Park are just 30 mins away. See our team’s recommendations of the best activities, attractions & events in Salcombe and the wider Devon area here. On request, the hotel will prepare you a sumptuous picnic to take with you or hire one of our bikes on site to explore the area with.

Glebe House on Conde Nast Traveller's 2022 hot list of best new hotels in the world
The guesthouse in Colyton is on a prestigious list of the 96 best new hotels in the entire world
- 07:35, 5 MAY 2022
- Updated 09:30, 5 MAY 2022
Condé Nast Traveller has published its 2022 Hot List of the best new hotels in the world, saying it may be “the hottest Hot List yet.” The 26th edition of the Hot List features 96 “fresh-faced hotels we’d plan a trip around” including ones in New York, London, Paris, Rome, Vienna – and one in Devon.
The luxury travel magazine picked Glebe House in Southleigh, Colyton, for its prestigious list , following a review it ran in June last year. The review was headlined: “Is this Devon’s smartest new hotel?”
Glebe House is run by chef Hugo Guest and his artist wife, Olive. The couple took over Glebe House from Hugo’s parents and spent half a year renovating and refurbishing it before opening in spring 2021.
Read more: Why the Jurassic Coast has been named the UK's best road trip
It describes itself on its website as: “A guesthouse, restaurant and 15-acre smallholding set in the heart of East Devon, an area of outstanding natural beauty. With far-reaching views over the rolling hills of the Coly Valley, and a short drive from the Jurassic Coast, Glebe is a unique foodie retreat in the beautiful English countryside.”
The Georgian house, which is three miles from the sea, has five comfortable bedrooms and a self-contained annexe, designed with bold use of colour and patterns, with artistic details and murals throughout. Guests are greeted with home-baked goods and refreshments on arrival. The price of the room includes a farmhouse breakfast – homemade pastries, bread, butter, compotes and jams, yoghurt and granola.
The restaurant is open from Thursday to Sunday, with a regularly-changing, fixed menu composed of four courses with snacks and petit fours. Produce is grown or sourced locally. Dinner is served from Thursday to Saturday and charged at £55 per head, while Sunday lunch is £40 per head.
A “kitchen supper” offers a more casual dining option for in-house guests from Monday to Saturday. Think homemade pies and hearty ragus. These are charged at £20 per head including sides, but pre-ordering is essential. The kitchen is closed on Sunday evenings but evening snacks – sourdough bread, cheese, charcuterie and pickles – are available for £10 per person.
There are two living areas with fireplaces perfect for reading or playing a game. There’s also an outdoor heated swimming pool (open April to September) and a tennis court. Glebe House also offers experiences such as bread making, mackerel fishing and flower drawing.
Sally Shalam’s review for Condé Nast Traveller called the house “handsome” and said: “In a setting of such pastoral perfection you will pinch yourself.” She said it would appeal to “slow-food devotees, families rediscovering the joy of gatherings, cocooning solo travellers and the urban-dwelling cognoscenti who never knowingly miss an arrival as individual as this.”
The reviewer loved the “English version of agriturismo,” the tableware, and the interiors including the hand-painted lamps, geometric tiles and floral wallpapers which she described as “a celebration of colour and adornment.” For guests heading out and about, she recommended fish and chips at Beer, the 14th-century Fountain Head pub in Branscombe and Michael Caines’ latest venue, Mickeys Beach Bar and Restaurant in Exmouth .
Hugo Guest told DevonLive that he hadn’t yet “processed properly” Glebe House’s inclusion on the list. He said: “We’re gobsmacked and humbled. We started this not really expecting it to take off the way it did. It’s reaffirming. It’s been such hard work and we’ve put blood, sweat and tears into it, so it’s nice to be recognised. We’re just a small team trying to create something special.”
