Mahsuri Tomb and Museum

• A fascinating spot with deep roots in Langkawi’s history.
• It has many legends surrounding it that are very much believed by the locals!

If one of your reasons for visiting Malaysia is for the storied history and legends, then this one is a doozy! Mahsuri was a woman who was born in Langkawi, but not just any woman – she was believed to be the most beautiful woman on the entire island. Mahsuri’s parents are said to have been Thai, but they immigrated to Langkawi during the 18th century. However, the origins of Mahsuri’s parents is somewhat folklore, some even believe she was a princess!

It is said that Mahsuri was desired and admired by every man on the island, with even the chief of Langkawi wanting to marry her! Unfortunately for them, Mahsuri fell in love with a warrior whom she married. This warrior then had to go to battle during the battle with the Siamese!

This left Mahsuri alone, but she was comforted by the company of a charming storyteller than had come to Langkawi and enchanted everyone. Because this storyteller had nowhere to stay, Mahsuri opened up her home. Soon, out of jealousy, the chief’s wife started a rumor that she was involved in adultery – and thus she was sentenced to a violent death!

Mushuri was stabbed to death and tied to a wooden pole by the elders of the island! The legend says that when she died, she bled white blood. Today, you can observe this sacred spot with friends and family and be inspired by the colorful tale and bravery of Mushuri!

Underwater World Langkawi

It’s odd to think that an archipelago of 99 islands could have remained relatively off grid, but that’s exactly what Langkawi has managed. Dotted off the west coast of Malaysia , these islands – many uninhabited except for majestic species of bird and monkey – are rich tapestries of culture, wildlife and vibrant rituals, all beneath the rainforest canopy. A 60-minute flight from Kuala Lumpur and 90 minutes’ from Singapore , Langkawi is becoming the destination of choice for those in-the-know.

Take a boat tour through the mangroves

Langkawi’s waterways run through the dense mangrove fields of Kilim Geoforest Park on the main island and spill out into the Andaman Sea, making them the perfect way to explore. The channels range from wide, open stretches – sometimes large enough for restaurants to float atop of them – to narrow labyrinths, thick with plant life. A boat trip here is a tranquil way to get close to the wildlife, as well as learn the history of Langkawi, as an expert spotter joins each tour to point out the creatures that dart through the undergrowth. Weather permitting, the tour ends with a journey out in the open ocean . No need for bug repellent as the mangrove trees keep mosquitos and other pests at bay, however the resident monkeys aren’t as distant. They’ve learned to swim out to boats in search of food and drink so be careful with sweet drinks in open cans and easily-accessible food such as fruit. Visit the roving night market

Exploring a market in a foreign country can offer a fascinating insight into its flavour, and Langkawi’s night market (pasar malam), which roams from place to place, is particularly special. You won’t find the traditional tourist trinkets here, but rather good quality food for as little as 40p. Local Malay food isn’t available in abundance around Langkawi, and often roadside restaurants can be hit and miss, so this floating food fair is an ideal taste of what island life is all about. After a feast, pick up a sugar cane juice, spooned out of giant vats and immensely refreshing. The biggest markets are on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Markets: Monday: Jalan Makam Mahsuri Lama, 6pm to 11pm; Tuesday: Kedawang, 5.30pm to 10pm; Wednesday and Saturday: Kuah, 5.30pm to 10pm; Thursday: Bohor Tempoyak, 6pm to 11pm; Friday: Padang Lalang, 6pm to 11pm; Sunday: Padang Matsirat, 6pm to 10pm.

Go island hopping

There are so many choices here but JungleWalla is a good sustainable option – its tours respectfully observe the wildlife rather than coax the animals out for visitors’ enjoyment. The rivulets, small-scale beaches and caves make ideal jumping-off spots and the wider waters offer chances to spot whale sharks. If you do choose the eco-friendly option, tour times are limited so booking early is a must. Head skywards

The Langkawi Sky Bridge may be one of the better-known things to do in Langkawi but is worth a visit nevertheless – and anyway, the islands’ version of busy pales in comparison to that of larger Asian destinations . This 125-metre long, curved structure, is suspended 660 metres above sea level, making it the longest free span, curved bridge in the world. Those who brave it are rewarded with a truly wondrous view, including the Telaga Tujuh waterfalls and several surrounding islands. Skip the queues by buying your ticket beforehand, but only book on the morning you want to go as the views are weather dependant. If it’s raining or cloudy, choose another day. Up, up and away

The Langkawi Cable Car, also known as Langkawi SkyCab, is said to be the steepest in the world and takes visitors on a 15-minute journey from the Oriental Village at Teluk Burau to the peak of Gunung Machinchang (also home to the the Langkawi Sky Bridge). Head above the canopy of trees towards the open air decks at the top, to see vistas of the lush Langkawi rainforest from a bird’s-eye vantage point. The glass-bottomed SkyCabs offer an entirely 360 experience and an exceptional viewpoint – although they can feel slightly hair-raising if you aren’t comfortable with heights. Pull on your walking boots

Hiking up towards Gunung Raya's 880-metre peak is no easy feat but well worth the effort. An expert guide who knows how to navigate is a must, but journey to the roof of the island to discover white-bellied sea eagles that soar above the tree canopy, cheeky macaque monkeys and the astonishing flora and fauna that dot the mountainside. Closer to the top, the climb becomes steeper, but those who do make it should look out for the large hornbill birds that can be spotted from here.

Revel in an underwater experience

Langkawi’s marine life attracts divers and snorkelling enthusiasts to its underwater world and Pulau Payar Marine Park often tops their list. Some 30km south of the main island, around a 45-minute boat trip from Kuah jetty point, four uninhabited islands stretch over two nautical miles and are strictly regulated to maintain their unspoiled state. Seasoned divers swear this is the best site on Malaysia’s west coast while, for first-timers, even the shallow waters provide an array of life, including little blacktip reef sharks (pictured above).

Wade into the padi fields

Nowhere on these islands is particularly busy, but the Laman Padi rice garden and museum has really managed to slip under the radar. For a gentle activity to offset all the watersports, this working rice farm, with water buffalo, is great. Free to visit, Laman Padi translates to rice fields and that’s exactly what’s on offer across this sprawling complex. Finding a staff member can be tricky but persevere – you’ll be given a fascinating glimpse into the process of rice farming.

Make a splash

Langkawi is home to many beautiful falls but the most spectacular is the Durian Perangin Waterfall. It’s hidden right in the heart of the jungle and those who make it through the dense undergrowth will appreciate the refreshing dip (don’t worry, you can also drive and park nearby). Named after the spiny oval-fruited durian trees that are found in abundance here, the waterfall is located at the north-eastern side of Langkawi. Avoid the dry season (from mid- November to mid- April ) when there is scant water, but the area is beautiful nevertheless.

Take the driving seat

You might hear people refer to the ‘rhino tour’ while you’re in Langkawi but alas, there is no rhino spotting to be had. Rather these are tours of the local villages, landscapes and jungle trails while driving a 4x4. It’s an exhilarating way to see the island as you spin through streams and different terrains, slowing down for nuggets of knowledge from the personal guide who accompanies you. Don’t forget the mosquito repellent – some of the jungle’s inhabitants like to get more up-close and personal than you’d like.

Top things to know about visiting Langkawi

Langkawi is a predominantly Muslim island, so just be respectful of the locals with how you dress – It is a beach city so they are understanding, but when you’re out in local areas, try and dress more conservatively. Also, know that you shouldn’t touch a local of the opposite sex. And easy on the PDA when you are around them.

Also important to note is that there aren’t many ATMs on the island. The main ones are at the airport and in malls. Not many places accept cards, so make sure you always have money on you. But don’t worry, the ATMs don’t charge fees here. Win!

How to get around Langkawi

There is no public transportation on the island so the best thing to do is to rent a car or a scooter. We had the joy of driving around on a scooter the whole time we were here and can say that it’s quite safe and easy. Just make you always carry your license and helmet with you as police roadblocks are quite frequent.

Another easy and quick way to get around is through Grab . Make sure you download the app before getting there. You can easily get someone to pick you up and drop you off and it’s super cheap.

There are quite a few things to do in Langkawi, from fun activities to lazy beaches. There is something for everyone and every budget. Here’s our list of the best activities on the island of Langkawi.

1. Check out the pristine beaches of Langkawi

There are three main beaches on the island, though you will find other small ones too.

Discover Cenang Beach, the most touristic beach in Langkawi

This is the main tourist beach, where you will find all the bars and restaurants. You also have tons of resorts on this stretch of beach. You can also find any water sport that you may be interested in doing on Cenang beach.

The sand is white but very hard and full of shells. The water is nice, but clarity depends on the number of boats running around and if it rained that night. You can rent long chairs to lounge on or do a ton of activities here, but those aren’t free.

For your first trip to Langkawi, this is the area we recommend you stay in. It has the highest concentration of restaurants, bars, and shops. The main hotels are in this area too, so nothing is too far.

Tanjang Rhu Beach, a secluded beach in Langkawi

This is where you will find luxury resorts like the Four Seasons. The beach is fairly secluded as it’s in a more quiet part of the island. The best place to enjoy it is all the way at the end of the strip, near where the mangrove tours leave. There, you have a few local restaurants and shops by the beach, which are perfect for taking a break from the sun. At this beach, expect clear waters, calm seas, and beautiful sunsets.

Skull beach (Pantai Tengkorak), a local’s beach and a hidden gem in Langkawi

This was our favorite beach on the island. It’s a must-see if this is your first trip to Langkawi. Skull beach offers soft white sand, clear blue waters and more importantly, barely anyone around. The first time we went there, there were only a handful of locals. The next time, there was barely anyone else there.

The entrance to this beach is a little odd: There are a few huts and cottages around and the main area around it is gated, but rest assured you can go and enjoy the best beach on the island.

There are a few other beaches too. They are quite smaller than the ones above. But when we find one we like, we just stick to it. You can do the same!

• Pantai Kok is north of Cenang beach. It’s small and in the lagoon with tons of boats around, but it’s quiet and lovely. For an added photo-op, there’s a cute stone lighthouse around the bend from the beach.
• Pantai Tengah is just around the cliff from Cenang beach. It’s quieter, and smaller, but offers better sand.
• Black Sand Beach (Pantai Pasir Hitam), 4 km southwest of Tanjang Rhu, is a stretch of black sand that looks amazing at sunset!

2. Chill out at Dash Resort, what to do in Langkawi for a relaxing day

Dash resort is right on the beach, and it has a beautiful pool! It’s quite different than anything else you’ll find on the island, so it’s pretty cool. If you want to lounge around a beautiful resort pool, Dash is the place. All you need to do to have access is to order food or a drink, then the place is all yours! Ok, you might have to share the pool with others, but each time we went, the crowds were pretty small.

The theme at Dash is “down the rabbit hole”, a theme inspired by Alice in Wonderland. You’ll find statues, paintings, and all other kinds of art from the iconic children’s story.

You can even head down to a nice white sand beach, Pantai Tangah. This beach is quieter than Cenang, and has nicer sand, so win-win if you ask us.

3. Explore the waterfalls on your first trip to Langkawi

The three main waterfalls to see on the island are the 7 Wells, Air Terjun Temurun and the Durian Perangin waterfalls. On your first trip to Langkawi, we recommend visiting these falls.

As you can imagine, the best time to see them is during the rainy season, as they are barely alive during the dry season. It was only the start of the rainy season when we were in Langkawi, in May, so the falls were not as active. The entrance to all these falls is free.

Head to 7 Wells Waterfalls (Telaga Tujuh), the most wonderful natural attraction in Langkawi

Situated near the Cable Car (you can see them from there), these falls are actually seven natural pools that are connected and fed by seven separate waterfalls in Mount Mat Cincang. To get to the wells and the observation deck, you will need to hike up some 690 steep steps, or about 10 minutes. But be warned, it’s a hot and sweaty trek. 

Is it worth it? Yeah, after all, these waterfalls are said to be Langkawi’s most wonderful natural attraction… during the rainy season! They were barely full when we were there!

Locals believe that the Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls are home to fairies, but it’s probably due to the fact that the nature around the falls is so lush and beautiful! If the heat doesn’t get to you, you can climb to the top of the falls, past huge rocks and through the seven pools. It will take you around 45 minutes, but you’ll be sure to spot plenty of birds and animals. There are no bins along the way, so be sure to bring an adventure bag and your trash back home with you. You know how important it is to be eco-friendly as travelers!

Another added bonus of these falls is that you can bathe in the rock pools or at the bottom of the falls. Just be warned that locals mainly bathe in the pools below the waterfalls. For women, you may want to wear a t-shirt over your bathing suit as the men do stare quite a lot. They are harmless, but if you get uncomfortable easily, this may be a good way to avoid unwanted attention.

If you’re still looking for more to do there, you also have tons of activities at the foot of the hills, like zip-lining through the forest. Make a day out of it and have some fun. These waterfalls are also a short drive from the cable car and Skull beach.

Getting here:  As with everything around the island, you will need to get here by your own means (scooter, car or Grab). Just put the name of the falls in your GPS and it will lead you there.

Air Tenjun Temurun, a refreshing waterfall to check out in Langkawi

These waterfalls are in the Mat Cincang Nature Park of Datai. A perfect place to cool down with refreshing waters coming down from the mountains. The cascade down is about a 30-meter drop, with a nice pool below where you can swim. Because the rainy season had barely started during our stay, we skipped these falls. They are only full after the rain, if not, expect more of a trickle than a waterfall.

Durian Perangin, a must-see waterfall in Langkawi

The Durian waterfalls are near Tanjang Rhu beach, just about 15 minutes away. Thankfully, they don’t smell like durians, but instead, they are quite lovely! This is actually a 14-tier waterfall that cascades down Mount Raya, the island’s tallest mountain. The falls are a stone’s throw away from the hot springs in Kampung Ayer Hangat.

To get to the top of the falls, you have to hike up a few steps, nothing as crazy as the 7 Wells. The hike up here is well worth it, again, especially if it rained before. The locals usually swim at the bottom of the falls, so we had the whole place to ourselves for a good 45 minutes before other travelers showed up.

We had friends go to these falls after heavy rainfall and their experience was quite different from ours. The pool of water was super full and had a strong current down. They could barely swim at the top of the hill. So make sure you check out the conditions before going in!

4. Catch the view from the Langkawi Skycab, an iconic thing to do on a first trip to Langkawi

This is probably the most popular tourist attraction on the island: the Langkawi Skycab ! At 950 meters high, it’s the longest free-span mono car in the world. The views from the top here are pretty amazing, especially on a clear sunny day. While in the Sky Cab, you get a 360-degree view of the lush vegetation, the surrounding islands, the 7 Wells waterfalls, and pretty much everything else! The thrill of going up a super steep cable is also pretty cool and exhilarating, but probably not for those who are scared of heights.

Included in the RM55 per person price tag are the SkyDome, a 360-degree movie experience that is about 7 minutes long; the Sky Rex, a 4D dinosaur ride that stopped working halfway through; and the 3D trick-eye museum.  However, the Sky Bridge is not included and costs an additional RM5, and if you want to take the Sky Glide, a weird-looking, slow-moving elevator that takes you from the Sky Cab tower to the Sky Bridge, add another RM10 to your costs.

Our advice would be to head there early for two main reasons. First is the obvious heat. It gets super toasty up there when you’re that close to the sun. You can’t bring water with you so try to avoid the 11 am to 2 pm window. Second, the crowds won’t be there. This is one of the main attractions on the island, so expect tons of people. Try to get there before 10 am or after 4 pm to avoid them.

Although the views and the overall cable car experience were fun, we have one major complaint about the place. They continuously force you to take pictures in front of green screens so that they then slap some random background in the back of you. Even when we refused to take the picture, they would not let us pass until we complied. What a waste of people’s time, of paper and ink! They print out all these forced pictures and sell them to you later in various shapes and forms. We found a trick to avoid them printing it: We would cover our faces or make really ugly grimaces. It worked like a charm! No paper or ink was wasted on us.

5. Climb to the top of Mount Raya, Langkawi’s tallest peak

At 881 meters, Mount Raya (Gunung Raya) is the tallest mountain on Langkawi. It’s why this is one of the best things to do in Langkawi, on your first trip.

Located in central Langkawi, you’ll find the Gunung Raya Golf Course at its base. The mountain is covered with lush rainforest and creates a beautiful backdrop to the island’s landscape! There are two ways you can get to the peak of Gunung Raya, either drive or trek.

The easiest route is obviously to get a ride up there and should take you about 30 min. Take the not-too-steep but narrow winding road Jalan Gunung Raya that starts at its intersection with Jalan Ulu Melaka. Be careful at the turns as many cut corners around here.

Then, if you like to hike , strap your shoes on and get climbing! There are tour operators that will guide you up there, but from what we heard, you can trek on your own as well. It should take between 1 to 1.5 hours. There are no facilities on the way up, so bring food and water, and take your trash back down with you.

Once at the top, there is a resort and a watchtower, with an entrance fee of RM10. You will get the same views as you do at the top of the Cable Car, but there are barely any people here. It’s also a great place to watch the sunset.

6. Go duty-free shopping on your first trip to Langkawi

In case you didn’t know, Langkawi is a duty-free island. Fun fact: in 1987, the Malaysian Government declared Langkawi duty-free in order to boost tourism. So you know what that means, right?! There are tons of shops that will sell you tax-free chocolates, alcohol and tobacco products. 

Just note that there is a limit to how much alcohol you can buy and you will need to present your passport when making these purchases. Duty-free shops are clearly marked and can be found all over the island, though they are mainly around Cenang Beach and in Kuah.

How good are the deals? Depending on what you buy, it can be quite cheaper than what you pay back home. For example, a 1-liter of rum back home will set us back $45 CND but cost only RM30 on the island. That’s CND$10. And that friends, is a great deal!

7. Go island-hopping, one of the best things to do around Langkawi

Located off the west coast of Malaysia , Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 islands in the Melaccan Straits of the Andaman Sea. So as you can only imagine, there are a ton of islands around Langkawi that you can go explore. 

Most are uninhabited and are just thick forests, but they are beautiful. The famous Pregnant Maiden island is the most popular and is where couples wishing to get pregnant go because of the legend that made this island popular. Apparently, jumping in the lake there will help you conceive more easily.

If you want to tour the islands, don’t book anything online, as it tends to be more expensive. Instead, you can check with your accommodations, or even walk along Pantai Cenang and ask the vendors there. The competition is quite fierce, so you will likely find something within your budget. Just note that some islands have an entrance fee (around RM6-10) that is probably not included in the price of your ticket.

8. Drive around Langkawi

Because there is no public transportation in Langkawi, the best way to explore the island is to drive around. This may not sound like much, but it’s the perfect way to discover island life.

Go find some water buffalo in the rice paddy fields, stop at the local fruit stand to chat with the vendor and get some insanely fresh fruit. We found the best mangos we have ever had while in Langkawi. 

Drive along the coast and admire the natural beauty of the island. You’ll find tons of cute little restaurants that will serve you delicious food for a small price tag!

9. Go on some fun activities during your first trip to Langkawi

There is no shortage of activities to do on the island. There is something for everyone, every type of traveler and every budget. Most vendor stalls along Cenang beach will offer these to you, and so will your accommodations, so scout out prices and go have a blast.

Here are the main activities you can do during your first trip to Langkawi:

Take a mangrove tours, a great activity in Langkawi

These were probably the most popular of the tours offered on the island.  The tours take off near Tanjang Rhu beach, starting off on the open ocean before diverting into the narrow tributaries of the mangrove forest on the northeastern part of the island. These tours are guided and expect to see tons of animals. A lot of the tours include other activities as well, like feeding eagles, fish farms and lots more.

Go parasailing to see Langkawi in a different way

All around Cenang Beach, you will find tons of boats and vendors offering to take you parasailing. The best time to go is probably at sunset, as the ones on Cenang beach are some of the best we’ve seen!

Take a jet ski tour around Langkawi

You can also hop on a jet ski and go explore the islands around. Tours are usually sold in blocks of 3 hours and a guide will be with you to show you around. Again, if you are hoping to go on some of the islands, expect to pay an entrance fee.

Go on a boat tour to discover Langkawi by water

There are a ton of boat tours available on the island. They range from more budget-friendly options to higher-end sunset cruises. Take a look around and find one that best suits your needs.

Go zip-lining for an adrenaline push in Langkawi

As we mentioned before, you can go zip line right at the foot of the 7 Wells waterfalls. They have a whole course in the lush forest on the hill.

How long to spend in Langkawi on your first trip

You can enjoy Langkawi and do most of what there is in three days, but if you really want to disconnect and immerse yourself in the sweet island life, then give yourself a good week. After all, you probably took a flight or a ferry to get here, so why not really enjoy the time you have on this beautiful island in Malaysia.

Where to eat – The best restaurants in Langkawi

There is no shortage of options on where to eat in Langkawi. You have something for every budget, so just go out and explore.

1. Check out the Night market in Langkawi for a local experience

The night market in Langkawi is in a different spot every night of the week.

• Monday: Ulu Melaka, Jalam Makam, Mahsuri Lama
• Tuesday: Kedawang, near Cenang beach
• Wednesday: Kuah Town
• Thursday: Temoyong, Mukim Kedawang, Pantai Cenang (Less than 5 minutes walk from the house towards Cenang Beach).
• Friday: Air Hangat, Padang Lalang
• Saturday: Kuah Town
• Sunday: Padang Matsirat, opposite of the Field of Burnt Rice

These night markets were some of our favorite spots to eat in Langkawi.  You will often find the locals eating here, so you know it is good. Some of our favorite dishes were the Murtabak, the potato dumplings, noodles, these markets have everything you need. We would often stock up for a few meals here, and the food costs next to nothing! Just beware that food for vegetarians is limited, but you can find some pretty awesome fare still.

2. Devour delicious burgers at Burgersmith

We loved Burgersmith since they offered vegetarian burgers that you could dress with your choice of toppings. Their burgers come with fries and a drink, and all together will run you about 30RM, not bad for some good western food.

3. Check out Tomato 24 for amazing and affordable Indian food

Looking for great, cheap Indian food? This is the best place on the island to find it. Situated near Asean resort, it doesn’t look like much, but it’s delish, especially good for you vegetarians out there. The options are limitless. We absolutely loved the paneer masala, with rice and naan bread! If you want to treat yo’self, splurge on the naan bread with cheese and garlic. And by splurge, we mean to spend the extra $0.50.

Where to stay on your first trip to Langkawi

Of course, we’re going to recommend the places we were running! These Airbnb units are cute and homey, and the hosts who run them, along with their Workaway help, are awesome. You can find the 3 different places here . To help make your choice, here’s a bit about them:

1. Sawah Padi Villa, a beautiful villa in a rice field

Set on a rice paddy field, Sawah Padi Villa is where you’ll see tons of water buffalo and some of the most amazing sunsets ever! This home can accommodate up to 5 people and comes with a full kitchen and living area. It’s about a 20-min walk to Cenang Beach, so you have both the peace and quiet of country living while being close to the action.

2. Halia Village, a great apartment close to the city

A lovely unit with a full kitchen and living area as well, Halia Village accommodates up to 4 people. This place was great for us, as it boasts a kitchen and living room. After all our traveling it is rare that we get the space that Halia Village gave us.

The unit is 15 minutes away from the beach and set in steps away from the rice patty fields

3. Rama Rama, a quiet retreat with amazing views

We help set up Rama Rama, so we hope you like it! These units are more of a peaceful retreat, with breathtaking sea views and nature. Still close enough to the action, but far enough that you can enjoy nature in peace.  With your own private veranda, a gazebo and a spot to sunbathe, you may never want to leave this tranquil haven.

Overall, if this is your first trip to Langkawi, we recommend staying in and around the Pantai Cenang Beach area. This is where you’ll find most of the beaches, restaurants, and hotels. Plus, the attractions are never too far away, which is great, regardless of if you want to take a scooter there or a Grab.

How to get to Langkawi

There are 2 main ways to get to the island. And you’ve probably guessed them by now.

1. Fly to the island of Langkawi

There are flights from most major destinations like Kuala Lumpur and Penang from local providers. The flights are usually pretty cheap and quite frequent. From Kuala Lumpur, it should take you about one hour, and a mere 40 minutes from Penang.

2. Take a ferry to Langkawi

Yup, that’s the other way you get to an island. You get on a boat. The ferry takes about three hours and leaves twice daily to and from Penang. It cost about RM70. However, be prepared. From what we’ve heard, it’s quite a choppy ride.

Best time to visit Langkawi

There are three main seasons in Langkawi. The high season, mid-season and low-season. They all coincide with the changes in weather.

January to March is the high season. Expect tons of sun and to do a lot of outdoor activities and tours. This is when there is the least amount of rainfall, the hottest weather and the biggest number of tourists. In fact, most travelers start to flock in from early November until April. This period also happens to coincide with many international school holidays. So expect to pay higher prices for food, accommodations, and activities. You can also expect longer queues and crowds at restaurants and attractions.

April to August is the mid-season. It when many returning tourists prefer to come back. This is when we were in Langkawi – the whole month of May. There were occasional rainfalls with cloudy sky and sometimes thunderstorms, but they were short-lived. Usually, we would get showers in short spurts in the late afternoon or evenings. This didn’t interfere with our exploring or sun chilling, but it did help cool the temperatures! Also, during this season, there were not many tourists around and costs were relatively low. This is also when Ramadan will happen, so expect certain activities to have limited hours of operation.

And finally, September to October is the rainy season in Langkawi, so you won’t see many tourists around. Although it’s the rainy season, truth is that it rains only for about two hours a day, usually in the late afternoon and at night. You can still expect tons of dry time and sunshine during the day. September is also one of the coolest months with the average temperature around 27°C.  The upsides of the rainy season are the lush rainforests & landscapes in full bloom and the lack of crowds. A downside, however, is that sometimes the ocean swells and becomes rough, restricting the boat tours and water-based activities. 

Our unique experience in Langkawi for a first trip to the island

As we mention in the beginning, our experience in Langkawi was different than any other place we’ve been. A few things made it so:

Experiencing the Malaysian elections

First, the hotly contested Malaysian elections were held during our time on the island. It was really cool to see the flags of the opposing parties placed all over the streets. Residents would proudly display their preferences on their front door and even on their cars.

More than once, we were held behind a procession of cars parading down the streets to show their support. The main candidates were the current prime minister at that time, who was caught in a corruption scandal, and Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the longest-running prime minister who had bowed out of politics in the early 2000s.

It was really cool to see the people rejoice after the Doctor won, making him the oldest leader in the world. It’s always nice to see people stand up and demand change from a corrupt government… but don’t get us started on world politics!

Living Ramadan in a Muslim country

Next, during our last 2 weeks on Langkawi, we bore witness to the Holy Month of Ramadan. Ramadan is a celebration held by all Muslims around the world where they commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad.

During this whole month, from mid-June to mid-July this year, Muslims around the world fasted from sunrise to sunset, not even drinking a sip of water. They also refrain from smoking, and engaging in sexual relations, and must steer clear of any sinful behavior that may negate the reward of fasting.

The purpose of this month is not only to cleanse the soul by freeing it from harmful impurities, but it also teaches them self-discipline, self-control, sacrifice, and empathy for those who are less fortunate. It was really great to see so many people practice this old tradition in solidarity.

During this time, a lot of businesses were closed or changed their working hours, including some local restaurants, tourist attractions and stores. Also, our favorite night market moved, and it took us a good week to find it again. The upside was that the night market was replaced by the Ramadan Bazaar, which was held every day, both in Kuah and near the airport, where Muslims would head out to after sunset to break their fast.

Doing a Workaway

Finally, the last thing that marked our special experience on Langkawi was that we did our first Workaway here.  Basically, we stayed put for one month and helped a couple run their Airbnb’s. And after moving around so much, it was nice to have a place to call home and get back into a routine for a little bit.

Langkawi is a beautiful island in the Andaman Sea about 30km from the northwestern coast of Malaysia.

There are several reasons that make Langkawi a very attractive island to visit, such as its accessibility, the fact that you can visit year-round, and the beautiful white-sand beaches.

Quick facts about Langkawi

Langkawi, also known as Pulau Langkawi (Pulau means Island in Malaysian) , is not just the name of the island, it's actually an archipelago counting almost 100 islands, big and small!

The currency of Langkawi is the Malaysian Ringgit , check the current exchange rate at XE.com .

The largest town in Langkawi is Kuah but Pantai Cenang is the most popular place to stay for tourists (read more below).

When to visit Langkawi

As I mentioned above, you can visit Langkawi at any time of the year, unlike the islands on the East side of Malaysia (such as Tioman and the Perhentian Islands ).

While the island of Langkawi doesn't experience a strong monsoon season, like the East Coast, there is a rainy season (September-October) .

However, don't feel like you have to avoid these months altogether, it usually only rains for a couple of hours (often at night).

The dry season is from January to March , so if you want to maximize your chance of sunny days this is the best time to visit Langkawi.

Keep in mind though that this is high season and prices will be higher. Temperatures are higher as well, the average temperature is well above 30 degrees Celsius.

We visited Langkawi in May , which in my opinion was a great time to visit. We had both sunny days as well as some cloudy afternoons but no rain whatsoever.

The island wasn't too busy and there was plenty of accommodation available for a good price.

How to get to Langkawi

There are 2 ways to get to Langkawi: you can travel either by plane or by boat.

Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi by plane

We flew to Langkawi airport from Kuala Lumpur with Malindo Air (for just €13 per person, including luggage!).

Penang to Langkawi by ferry

If you are traveling from the neighboring island of Penang, you can hop on a ferry. The ferry goes twice a day and takes around 3 hours.

Unfortunately, due to Covid the Penang to Langkawi ferry is suspended until further notice.

Kuala Perlis to Langkawi by ferry

You can also take a ferry from the mainland to Langkawi, ferries depart from Kuala Perlis (1h15min) and Kuala Kedah (2h30min). More information about ferries can be found here .

Where to stay in Langkawi

We stayed in Pantai Cenang, a lovely village located on the West coast of Langkawi and about 8km from Langkawi international airport by car.

If you are looking for the perfect place to stay, I highly recommend NR Langkawi Motel . This is a lovely and affordable budget accommodation with spacious rooms and private bathrooms.

The only slight disadvantage is that the hotel is located a bit further away from Pantai Cenang beach. We hired a scooter (more below) so that wasn’t a problem for us.

How to get around Langkawi

There is no public transport in Langkawi. There are lots of taxis but if you want to explore the island at your own pace, you can either rent a scooter or get a rental car .

The main roads on Langkawi are in good condition, the secondary roads can be unpaved and a little more challenging (but fun!) to navigate. Fuel is around 2.50RM per liter (we paid 7RM for fuel in total).

How to rent a scooter in Langkawi: practical information

We paid 70RM for the scooter rental, this was the price for 2 days (so 35RM per day). In general, the longer you rent a scooter, the lower the price per day.

There are plenty of rental places in Pantai Cenang. I rented ours across the road from Rasa Senang Chalet.

2 days in Langkawi: itinerary

• Day 1: Pantai Cenang – Kuah – Tanjung Rhu Beach – Pantai Cenang
• Day 2: Pantai Cenang – Teluk Burau ( Langkawi Cable Car and Sky Bridge ) – The Datai in Datai Bay – Pantai Cenang 

Day 1: explore the East side of Langkawi

Itinerary: Pantai Cenang – Kuah – Tanjung Rhu Beach – Pantai Cenang

We made a short visit to Kuah to check the ferry schedule. After a coffee at a nice cafe, we continued our journey.

However, if you like shopping, there are some great duty-free outlets and duty-free shopping options in Kuah town! Unfortunately, we didn't have any space in our backpacks…

Tanjung Rhu Beach

Tanjung Rhu is one of the best beaches in Langkawi and is found in the Northeast of the island.

And unlike the beautiful beaches in busy and popular Pantai Cenang, you may end up having this beach entirely to yourself…

To get there we followed the coast road (Jalan Tanjung Rhu) which ended at Tanjung Rhu Beach.

Just before getting to the beach, we came across a gate with a guard where we had to fill out an environment protection form.

The great thing about Tanjung Rhu Beach? Besides the beautiful white sand, breathtaking views and crystal clear water the major selling point of this beach is the fact that it's so calm and quiet… We spent a very relaxed afternoon here!

Important note: a section of the beach is off-limits as this is part of the exclusive Tanjung Rhu Resort .

Day 2: explore the West side of Langkawi

Itinerary: Pantai Cenang – Teluk Burau ( Langkawi Cable Car and Sky Bridge ) – The Datai – Pantai Cenang 

The Langkawi SkyCab

On the second day of our ‘Langkawi on a scooter exploration trip,' we drove to Teluk Burau, the starting point of the Langkawi Cable Car, also known as the SkyCab.

Taking the Langkawi Cable Car is one of the most popular activities in Langkawi and a lot of fun.

The cable car starts at the foot of the Machincang mountain and takes about 15 minutes to reach the Top Station, 708m above sea level.

Fun fact: the Langkawi Cable Car has been added to Malaysia Book of Records for ‘The Longest Free Span Mono-Cable'.

The Langkawi SkyBridge

Once you arrive at the top of the cable car it's only a short walk to the SkyBridge, a pedestrian bridge where you'll find yourself 100 meters above the ground…

When exploring an island, I usually have a map. However, on our second scooter day, I forgot my map so we just drove around and went where the road took us.

That is how we end up at the Datai, a stunning five-star resort on the northwest coast of Langkawi, and literally at the end of the road.

When we ask the guard if we can have a coffee at the resort, he was very welcoming and told us to park our motorbike. We headed down a green lane to a large and fancy-looking building.

At the entrance, we were welcomed by two friendly employees. Once again, we asked if we could have a coffee.

We were then redirected to employee no. 4 who asked us if we wanted to have a drink in the lounge or at the Beach Bar. A bit confused we looked at each other and said: the Beach Bar, please.

But of course, Sir, Miss, one moment please, the friendly lady replied. We settled down on a luxurious sofa, a little uncomfortable because we were the only ones in the huge and quiet lobby.

One minute later, the friendly lady called us and led us to a golf cart. We hopped aboard and yet another employee drove us to the Beach Bar.

At this point we started to get a little worried about the costs for this yet to be ordered drinks, fortunately, we had gotten enough cash at the ATM that morning…

The golf cart zigzagged around the resort grounds and I have to say: the villas looked stunning.

When we arrived at the Beach Bar we were welcomed by a whole team of staff and led to a comfortable sofa with a mountain of pillows and a beautiful view over the bay.

We ordered our long-awaited coffee; when the waiter arrived with a tray it wasn't just coffee. No, there was coffee, cookies, cashew nuts, cold water, a fruit skewer, and a cold-scented towel. What a service!

Again we shot a worrying look at each other, this could end up costing our entire daily budget… But first, we drank our delicious coffee, nibbled on the provided nuts and fruit, and sipped our ice-cold water.

We spent a comfortable hour on a sofa so soft it felt like we were sitting on a cloud. We didn't dare to order another drink so we asked for the check and were amazed this wonderful experience ended up costing only 30RM (€6,50/$7,50)!

A little reluctant we headed back to our scooter (after being driven back to the lobby by a golf cart, imagine having to walk somewhere;-).

If we ever go back to Langkawi, I would love to stay at this resort for a night. Though I better start saving up because the villas cost a lot more than a cup of coffee…

5 star resorts don't generally encourage people to pop in for a cup of coffee and use the beach chairs reserved for their guests. There are also security issues. It sounds to me as if you were initially mistaken for a resort guest, thus the confusion.

Recently a young man decided to come to the resort via 'jungle path' then proceeded to video the guard questioning why he was there, etc.. while 'jungle boy' condescendingly spoke to the guard 'this is a free beach, free for the public to use... '. Jungle boy then proceeded to post it on Facebook so everyone could see the indignity of it all.

As far as I know, yes you can certainly have a cup of coffee at The Datai, but making proper reservations and going through the front gate/lobby is preferable (not sneaking in through a jungle path). Dressing appropriately is probably a good idea as well. In addition to not being rude to the staff.

I personally wouldn't want to be paying for 5 star service and have to worry about random people just popping in. Especially in a remote location. I also would never spend 35RM on a cup of coffee, unless of course I was taking full advantage of beach chairs and inclusive snacks.

Thank you for your comment. I agree sneaking in isn't appropriate at all, but I just want to clarify: we drove to the main gate with our scooter and stated clearly we were not staying at the resort. We asked if we could have coffee and the guard said that was okay. This was 4 years ago however and apparently the Datai changed their policy in the meantime. Perhaps because of people trying to sneak in or perhaps due to complaints of resort guests, who can tell. In any case, we very much enjoyed our 5 star cup of coffee, it was quite an experience for us:-)

Hey, thanks for writing! We enjoyed loosely following this itinerary round Langkawi. Just to let you know that we got to the Datai today to pop in for a drink and you're unfortunately no longer allowed to do this. The security staff told us we had to have made a reservation and be guests of the hotel. They were actually pretty brusque and seemed to want to get rid of us. Oh well! They shan't be receiving my custom when I'm a wealthy man ;)

Langkawi is actually an archipelago made up of more than 90 islands located on the northwestern side of Malaysia. It’s the perfect choice for those looking for some relaxation or adventure while enjoying, at the same time, the paradise-like side of Malaysia.

Langkawi archipelago is particularly well known for its breathtaking beaches, but also for its more adventurous activities (such as water sports or a ride on the world’s steepest cable car). So keep reading this itinerary to better plan your trip to Langkawi.

Accommodation in Langkawi

How many days do you need in langkawi.

With around 478 square kilometres, Langkawi archipelago has plenty of things to visit. We could easily spend a week on the main island visiting a different beach every day and still have plenty of beaches to visit at the end of our time in Langkawi.

However, unless you really want to make the most of Langkawi’s beaches, I believe that 2 to 3 days is enough to see Langkawi’s main points of interest.

For example, in this post, I’m going to tell you the best places to visit in Langkawi in 2 days, which is how long my trip there lasted. I spent “only” two days on the island, but I managed to visit 3 beaches and visit all of Langkawi’s must-visit places.

That said, if you have more time to visit Langkawi, I promise you won’t get bored. One thing’s for sure, there’s no shortage of things to see in Langkawi 😉.

What is the best month to visit Langkawi?

The best time to visit Langkawi is during the dry season. I can imagine nobody wants to go to the beach if it’s raining 😁. There is less rainfall in Langkawi from December to March. However, I must warn you that this is also the peak season in terms of the number of tourists on the island.

Another excellent time to visit Langkawi is from April to August. It’s true that there’s a higher chance of rain, but if you’re willing to risk it, you might find great weather.

For example, I visited Langkawi in June and, even though it rained for a few hours, I was able to enjoy the beach. What’s more, it was wonderful to be able to visit some of the island’s most popular sites with very few tourists.

What documents do you need to visit Langkawi?

As a citizen with a Portuguese passport, I am entitled to a free visa valid for 90 days to enter Malaysia. My passport just had to be valid for, at least, 6 months. I also filled out the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card but no one asked me for it.

When arriving in Malaysia, the process is quite simple and you might be asked a few questions about your origin, where you’re going next, how long you plan to stay, where you’ll be staying and a few extra questions in some cases.

Is Langkawi worth visiting?

Langkawi Island offers a totally different side to the rest of the most popular places in Malaysia, such as Kuala Lumpur , Malacca or Penang , for example.

If you have no intention of going to the beach or simply don’t enjoy going to the beach that much, I don’t think it’s worth visiting Langkawi. The truth is that the beaches are Langkawi’s main attractions!

However, if you’d like to soak up some sun and get to know another version of Malaysia, I definitely recommend visiting Langkawi. For example, I’m not the biggest beach lover and must admit that I enjoyed my visit to the island.

In fact, there are other attractions in Langkawi, allowing you to combine the idyllic beaches with other interesting places in Langkawi.

How to get to Langkawi?

Currently, the most convenient way of getting to Langkawi is by plane. The airport in Langkawi has connections with the main cities in Malaysia (e.g. Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru) and also Singapore, for example.

In my case, I chose to fly directly from Penang to Langkawi. The flight takes just 17 minutes and cost 8€ on Air Asia. There are several airlines offering this route, so I suggest you check which is the most convenient option.

There was also a ferry option (that took about 2 hours) that departed from Penang . However, from what I could find out online and also after talking to some locals, the ferry is currently not operating. Considering the length of the plane journey and its price, I think flying to Langkawi is well worth it.

There are still ferries linking Langkawi to other areas in northern Malaysia (Kuala Perlis and Kuala Kedah) and also in Thailand (Satun and Koh Lipe), but for those travelling from Penang (a very popular option given its proximity), these options are not very viable.

What currency is used in Malaysia and how to pay?

The official currency in Malaysia is the Malaysian Ringgit (MYR). As of August 2023, 1 MYR = 0,20€. Even though there are many places that accept cards, you should also try to carry some cash with you since some are “cash only”. This is especially true if you intend to eat out in local markets.

To make purchases with a currency other than the one I usually use (Euro), I always use the Revolut card, which has many advantages. One of the biggest advantages of the Revolut card while travelling is the fact it does not charge additional fees for using a different currency.

Where to withdraw money without paying fees?

Some of the banks in Malaysia charge a fee for withdrawing money with foreign cards (even if you’re using a Revolut card!). However, I found some that actually didn’t charge me to withdraw money with my Revolut card. These were the banks where I got to withdraw money without paying fees:

How to have internet?

It’s quite handy to always have internet while travelling in Malaysia. It’s useful when you need to call a Grab or use Google Maps in walking mode, for example.

I decided to buy an e-SIM from Celcom (which I could then do top-ups) at a 7-Eleven store, but you can opt for a more hassle-free option. For example,  this e-SIM Roaming Mobile Data Plan  can be purchased even before you arrive in Malaysia and the options are quite cheap.

You can choose the option that suits you best, having in mind the duration of your trip and where you plan to go, since most of the plans include a mobile data plan that also works in other countries.

What is the best way to get around Langkawi?

Public transport in Langkawi is almost non-existent, which makes travelling between the various places on the island a bit difficult. So, unless you rent a car or motorbike, the easiest way to get around Langkawi is by Grab (Southeast Asia’s version of Uber).

This was the option I chose and it worked out perfectly, even when the journeys were longer (my longest journey took around 40 minutes). Trips are rarely very expensive, so it pays off in the end.

The best area to stay in Langkawi depends a lot on what you’re looking for. For example, if your goal is to stay in a more remote part of the island and have a more relaxed environment, you can do that.

However, if you’re looking for the busiest part of the island, which will give you more flexibility in terms of transport and easier access to restaurants, for example, then the following areas are the best to look for accommodation in Langkawi:

• Pantai Cenang – one of the most popular areas in Langkawi, where you’ll find plenty of shops and restaurants. It’s also the closest part to the island’s most popular beach.
• Pantai Tengah – close to another of Langkawi’s most popular beaches, although with a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere.
• Kuah – Langkawi’s main city and further away from the beaches. Very popular shopping area.

In my case, I chose to stay in Pantai Cenang at Villa Langkawi . The location was good (about a 15-minute walk from the beach) and the accommodation, although quite simple, met the conditions for a good night’s sleep. In addition, the value for money was excellent (it was only 25€ per night for 2 people).

In addition, Villa Langkawi has a swimming pool which, although I didn’t get to try it out, looked very appealing in Langkawi’s hot weather.

Before I start this Langkawi travel guide, I’m going to share with you a map with the places I’m going to include in this 2-day itinerary in Langkawi so you can better plan your trip.

This Langkawi itinerary includes everything I did on the island in 2 days. Of course, there are more experiences available or many more beaches to visit. However, my goal in this post is to show you how you can plan a 2-day trip to Langkawi (after all, we don’t always have as much time as we’d like to visit places).

But don’t worry if you have more time available to stay in Langkawi. At the end of this 2-day itinerary, I’ll leave you with more suggestions of things to do in Langkawi.

Langkawi Itinerary – Day 1

» pantai cenang beach.

I suggest starting this Langkawi itinerary, on what is the island’s most famous beach. About 2 kilometres long, here you’ll find several bars and restaurants. If you want to find the beach emptier, I suggest visiting relatively early.

💡 EXTRA TIP: There is a locker and changing room service right at the beach’s entrance. It can be useful for those who, for example, arrive at the island early and can’t immediately check in at their accommodation. Using the lockers costs 2€ for the whole day.

» Oriental Village

After a few hours on Pantai Cenang beach, head to one of the most popular areas on the island of Langkawi. Oriental Village is a cute little “village” with lots of shops and restaurants. It’s located where you can buy tickets for Langkawi’s cable car (we’ll get to that in a minute!), serving as a support infrastructure.

A quick stroll around the complex is more than enough, especially for those who have no intention of shopping here.

» Langkawi’s Cable car and Skybridge

Another must-do in Langkawi is its cable car. Get ready for the world’s steepest cable car, which will take you to a height of over 600 metres. The vertiginous journey takes around 15 minutes and each gondola carries a maximum of 6 people.

💡 EXTRA TIP: If you’re afraid of heights, I wouldn’t recommend this activity. For example, I’m not particularly afraid of heights and I have to confess that I felt quite uncomfortable for most of the journey.

During the ride, you can admire the views over Langkawi, as well as the lush green mountain of Machincang. There are several types of gondolas, some of them with a glass floor (I wouldn’t dare to ride on one of these, but if you like some adrenaline rush, it could be quite a fun experience).

When you reach the cable car’s first stop, there is a viewpoint with excellent views of the island. From here, you can continue on a 2-minute journey to the SkyBridge.

The SkyBridge requires an additional ticket (6 MYR, 1.2€) and it is a bridge where some parts have a glass floor. Here you’ll also get panoramic views over Langkawi.

However, on cloudy days I don’t recommend visiting at all, because due to the altitude of the SkyBridge and the cable car’s first viewpoint, it will be very difficult to have good views (unfortunately this is what happened to me). When the weather is bad, the cable car may even be temporarily closed.

📝 USEFUL INFORMATION: I suggest checking the opening times on the official website. In June 2023, the price to ride the “normal” cable car was 85 MYR (~17€) per adult. You can also buy tickets directly here .

When I visited, they were also building another platform with an eagle on it, which will certainly be a new attraction in the complex.

» Pantai Tengah Beach

And to end the day, I suggest a visit to Langkawi’s second most famous beach – Pantai Tengah. This is also quite long, but much less crowded than Pantai Cenang, as it has fewer facilities.

I especially recommend staying to watch the sunset. One of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen 🥰!

» Night markets

After a final dip in the sea, and because you’re probably already a bit hungry at this time, I suggest visiting one of Langkawi’s many night markets. The location of the market depends on the day of the week:

• Monday: Ulu Melaka
• Tuesday: Kedawang
• Wednesday: Kuah
• Thursday: Temonyong
• Friday: Ayer Hangat
• Saturday: Kuah
• Sunday: Padang Matsirat

Langkawi Itinerary – Day 2

» island hopping tour.

I recommend starting this second day with one of the most popular activities in Langkawi – an island hopping boat ride. There are several companies offering this service, but I booked directly through Get Your Guide. The tour I booked lasts one morning and includes pick-up and drop-off at your accommodation and only costs around 18€ per person.

The tour takes place in a kind of speedboat that carries around 20 people. The tour I took stopped at the following points of interest:

• Pulau Dayang Bunting (we could stay there for about 1h30)
• Observing eagles in their habitat
• Beras Basah Island (we could stay there for about 1h)

While on Pulau Dayang Bunting you can do some water sports in this cold-water lake, on Beras Basah Island you’ll want to take a dip in the warm seawater.

Finally, I want to point out that although the places you visit on this tour are truly beautiful, this is an extremely touristy activity. We have limited time to explore each site and it is clearly a mass tourism tour.

However, the truth is that I couldn’t find any other way to visit some of the places I visited on this tour, especially Pulau Dayang Bunting (one of the most popular places in Langkawi). So, despite the downsides of this activity, I still recommend it, as the beauty of the sites I got to visit made me forget about everything else.

💡 EXTRA TIP: I suggest taking a spare change of swimming clothes, because if you decide to get into the water, it’ll be difficult for them to dry before you have to get back on the boat.

» Tanjung Rhu Beach

After the morning tour, I recommend a visit to Tanjung Rhu beach in the afternoon. It’s a bit far from the more “central” part of Langkawi, but I promise it’s worth it 🥰! Some people actually say this is the best beach in Langkawi.

Due to its more remote location, this beach is usually much emptier. There are a few sunbeds and parasols for rental. With Malaysia’s hot and humid weather, this is really the only way to survive a few hours on the beach.

Langkawi Itinerary – What’s there more to visit

Do you have more days available to visit Langkawi? Then get ready, because there are a few more interesting places in Langkawi. Here are a few suggestions:

• Explore the island’s many waterfalls: Telaga Tujuh, Temurum and Durian Perangin
• Half-day tour in the protected area of Kilim Geoforest Park to observe the mangrove forest (one of the most popular activities in Langkawi after the island hopping boat trip!!!)
• Sunset dinner cruise for a special moment in Langkawi. Have a look at this tour, for example, which includes dinner and drinks.

Travel guide to Langkawi 2022: How to get to the island

Who’s ready for some fun in the sun? We certainly are, so we’ve put together a cheat sheet on how to travel to Langkawi.

Famed for its natural landscapes and scenery, Langkawi has become an ideal holiday destination for tourists and locals. Filled with hidden treasures and picturesque beaches , there’s nothing like planning a quick escape from the bustling city , and you can do just that with our guide here. Trust us, travelling to Langkawi will be a breeze. If you’re headed on a trip with friends or family, don’t fret, as we have various travel options by air or land. No matter where you’re coming from, we’ve got you covered.

How to travel to Langkawi for a fuss-free holiday:

Travel to Langkawi by air:

If you’re coming from Kuala Lumpur, flying by air is the best option as it only takes roughly an hour to reach the island. Domestic travellers can enter Langkawi without a passport or papers. All you need is your IC, and you’re good to go. 

As for international travellers, be sure to carry your passport with you upon arrival.

Getting there by car:

Depending on where you’re driving from, another fuss-free option is to embark by car and then take the car ferry to the island. The trip from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Perlis takes roughly about six hours.

Getting there by train:

If you’re coming from KL, book your ETS (Electric Train Service) ticket to Arau. As the royal capital of Perlis, Arau is known to be the gateway to Langkawi and Thailand, where every adventurer begins their journey to the island via Kuala Perlis Ferry Terminal. We recommend picking Arau as your final destination as it is closer to the port and the duration of the ferry ride later will be shorter.

The duration of the journey takes four hours and 49 minutes. As Malaysia’s fastest inter-state train service, we recommend grabbing this travel option if you’re up for a scenic adventure and are not rushing to your destination. Tickets will range between RM72 to RM92. Book your journey here .

Once you have reached your destination, you can then take a Grab or a taxi to the ferry, where operation hours begin from 7 AM to 7 PM.

Getting there by ferry:

From Kuala Perlis to Langkawi , a one-way ticket costs RM18 for adults and RM13 for children. For a two-way ticket, the tickets are priced at RM36 for adults and RM26 for children. In total, the duration will be approximately one hour and 15 minutes.

If I’m flying internationally, do I need a visa to travel to Malaysia?

Your passport must be valid for at least six months and will need at least one blank page required for an entry stamp. No visa is necessary to enter whether you’re visiting for business or pleasure for 90 days or less.

8 Fun Things To Do If You’re Traveling Solo To Langkawi

If you haven’t been to Langkawi Island, it’s about time you plan a trip. Who says a trip to Langkawi is only meant for couples, friends and families? Travel solo to Langkawi and you will have the time of your life! Whether you want a peaceful trip or you’d like to experience the adventurous side of the island, you can have the best of both worlds here! Check out what you can do in Langkawi if you’re planning a solo trip. 

1. Take the cable car and take a walk on Langkawi sky bridge

Take the exhilarating cable car ride which is also known as Langkawi SkyCab to see the best scenery in Langkawi. It is one of the most popular attractions on the island and you don’t want to miss this if you are in Langkawi. The cable car ride takes about 15 minutes and once you’ve reached the top, take a nice slow walk on Langkawi Sky Bridge. Enjoy the breathtaking views including the lush rainforests and the sea. A ticket costs RM43 (Malaysians) and RM85 (non-Malaysians) which also includes other attractions – the 3D Museum, SkyRex and SkyDome.

2. Go island hopping

If you enjoy the sun, the sand and the sea, then you’d want to enjoy the beautiful islands Langkawi has to offer. Island hopping is also one of the best things to do in Langkawi. From Cenang Beach, take a tour to the three popular islands – Pulau Dayang Bunting, Pulau Singa Besar and Pulau Beras Basah. It can save you some money if you can find some travel buddies to share a boat with you! Enjoy the clear blue waters, amazing sceneries and perhaps read your favourite book while you’re there!

3. Snorkeling/Diving

Langkawi has fabulous snorkeling and diving spots where you can discover exotic marine life. Just be sure to use proper attire and snorkeling/diving equipment. Can’t swim? Fret not, they provide life jackets for those who want to snorkel. Some of the best places in the island for snorkeling are Pulau Payar Marine Park, Datai Bay Beach, Tanjung Rhu Beach and Langkawi Coral.  Keep a lookout for baby sharks and colourful fishes! 

4. Parasailing

Have you seen people parasailing and you’ve always wanted to try it? Well, if you’re feeling a lil more adventurous and want to take a bird’s eye view of this beautiful island, go for a parasailing tour and you won’t regret it! The duration on air usually takes about 10 minutes and costs as low as RM120 per person. Parasailing tours are available at Cenang Beach, Kuah as well as Tanjung Rhu Beach. 

5. Enjoy a sunset dinner cruise

Just because you’re travelling solo, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a sunset dinner cruise. Go on and enjoy your own company, it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself. Book a cruise across the Andaman sea and enjoy magnificent views of the island when the sun sets. There’s nothing better than watching a sunset over the ocean on a cruise while sipping on a glass of wine. We’d do anything to have that right now! 

6. Relax at Yellow Beach Cafe

Hungry for some good steaks or pizza? Head over to Yellow Beach Cafe, a beautiful cafe by the beach that has a vibrant yellow theme colour. Located at Pantai Cenang, this cafe is a great place to chill, especially after a long day. They have hammocks and bean bags facing a beautiful view of the beach. Besides Western food, they offer beers, wine as well as cocktails. The best time to be here is during the sunset! 

7. Catch the sunset at Tanjung Rhu Beach

Known as one of the most romantic spots in Langkawi, you don’t want to miss the sunset here. Though Langkawi has many beautiful spots for sunsets, Tanjung Rhu Beach has got one of the best sunsets. This beach is also great to take evening walks while enjoying the sunset. If you’d love to have a good plate of fish and chips, head over to Scarborough Fish and Chips which is located right at Tanjung Rhu Beach!

8. Duty-free shopping is a must

You can never leave Langkawi without a little duty-free shopping. Say whaaat! If you love shopping, you’d love to shop in Langkawi island as they are mostly sold at extremely low prices. From imported chocolates to perfume and alcohol, you’d want everything. However, be sure to check the restrictions and shopping guide on buying duty-free alcohol as well as tobacco. You are only allowed to bring home 1L of alcohol and one carton of cigarettes from Langkawi.

Andalusia Road Trip: The Ultimate 2-Week Itinerary

Andalusia: one of the most heart-stoppingly beautiful regions in all of Spain . Andalusia Road Trip Itinerary

Andalusia is one of the greatest places to road trip. The drives are beautiful, crossing a diverse range of landscapes—between canyons, under viaducts, and on coastal roads. Two weeks is the ideal amount of time to see all the charming white villages of Andalusia that sit among the hilltops, as well as the most famous cities and beaches in Spain.

Whether it’s action or relaxation, there’s something for every type of traveler on this 2-week road trip itinerary (best done by car for ultimate freedom).

Day 1 – 2: Seville

On day 1 of your Andalusia road trip, begin in one of the most stunning cities in Spain: Seville. This city is famous for the Alcazar, an incredible Moorish palace with the most intricate details and beautiful gardens.

This is your first glimpse of the Moorish history in Spain, an Islamic reign that lasted hundreds of years from the 8th until the 15th century before the country was reconquered by the Christians. This part of history lives on in the architecture seen all around Spanish cities, particularly in the southern region of Andalusia.

You’ll also notice this architecture at Seville Cathedral, which still looks more like a mosque than a church. It’s also possible to climb the bell tower (minaret) for the most beautiful panoramic views over the city.

Aside from learning about the rich history of Seville, it’s a beautiful city to wander and explore. Everywhere you go, you’ll smell the strong scent of Sevillan oranges among the trees, hear the sound of flamenco dancing, and see the traditional Andalusian courtyards with their gorgeous tilework and fountains.  

Tip: Seville is well-connected to other major cities in Spain, like Barcelona or Madrid , so you can arrive in the city by train if traveling from an international airport.

If you’re visiting in the summer, we recommend booking a hotel with a rooftop pool and aircon to escape the heat in the afternoons when temperatures can reach upwards of 40°C (104°F). The more modern hotels with these amenities are just outside of the center.

If a pool isn’t essential for you, look for a traditional boutique hotel in the historic center of Seville, which normally have the traditional inner courtyards and Moorish architectural details.

Day 3: Cordoba  

Wonderful Cordoba: the city of flowers! This city might be small, but it’s perfect as a stopover on your Andalusia road trip. One day is the ideal amount of time to wander the beautiful streets, admiring the many patios (courtyards) filled with vibrant-colored flowers and blue ceramic pots.

If you’re visiting in May, watch the city come alive during the Festival de los Patios, a competition for the best florally-decorated courtyard in the city! In fact, this festival is so important that it’s been classified as an ‘intangible heritage’ by UNESCO .

There are many beautiful buildings to see in Cordoba , but the most famous is the Mezquita (the cathedral of Cordoba). This is one of the most incredible cathedrals we’ve ever seen! What was once a mosque during Moorish times is now a cathedral.

However, barely any changes have been made, and it’s home to some of the most magnificent Islamic architecture you’ll find in Spain. The interior is fantastic, with perfect archways decorated in red and white candy-cane stripes. 

Where to Stay in Cordoba 

Cordoba is home to lots of beautiful boutique hotels, which can be found in the historic center. Make sure to book well in advance if you’re planning on traveling to the city during May, as the festival means that accommodation gets booked up fast and is far more expensive than usual.

Another good time to visit is April, when the patios will nearly be ready for the fiesta, but it won’t be as busy.

Day 4 + 5: Granada (Must-do on your Andalusia Road Trip)

Arrive on day 4 in Granada, the most magical city in Spain. Not many cities can boast this kind of scenery; the ancient city is surrounded by snow-topped mountains and has a beautiful river that trickles down into the town.

In the background, sitting on top of the cliffside, and shadowed by the mountains, is the majestic Alhambra Palace (one of the most famous sites in all of Spain).

This colossal fortress complex was once the home of the ruler of the Nasrid dynasty (during the Moorish period in Spain ), and every detail is spectacular. You need a half-day alone just to walk among its opulent buildings and gardens filled with roses and orange trees. 

After your time sightseeing, get lost in the maze-like streets of the old town, paddle in the river off the hillside Albaicin neighborhood, or eat free tapas (in Granada, you get a free plate of tapas with every drink you purchase).

Albaicin is also a lovely neighborhood to stay in, particularly as it has excellent views of the city below and across the river to Alhambra. 

Potential Day Trips from Granada: Iznajar + Montefrio

Iznajar and Montefrio are two of the most beautiful white villages in Andalusia and must-sees on your Andalusia road trip itinerary! Both lie close to Granada and can be visited as half-day trips. We recommend Iznajar as a top priority and Montefrio at sunset if you have time.

Iznajar has one of the most picturesque locations, sitting high up on a hilltop overlooking an open valley and lake below. It’s most famous for its beautiful streets and patios, which are decorated with hundreds of flowerpots and brightly colored geraniums.

This tiny village is mainly home to elderly local people, so the pace of life is slow (it’s the perfect place to wander for a few hours and soak up the atmosphere of Spanish life!). Best of all, Iznajar is just over 1-hour drive from Granada, so it is the ideal half-day trip from the city.

Montefrio is a hilltop town home to the ruins of an ancient Moorish castle. The views from here are unparalleled, so much so that National Geographic voted Montefrio as one of the top 10 views in the world! Visit the fortress to reach the highest point of the village, followed by a walk to the National Geographic viewpoint, where you can see a direct view of Montefrio sprawled across the hillside. It’s truly one of the most beautiful villages in Spain and the perfect place to visit at sunset.

Day 6 + 7: Frigiliana + Nerja

It’s time to head for the beach! This strip of coastline is named ‘Costa del Sol’, meaning sunshine coast, and it lives up to its name. This area has many beautiful resorts and villages, but Frigiliana and Nerja are some of the loveliest.

Nerja sits on a clifftop overlooking the sea, with fantastic views of the coves and coastline below. It’s the perfect place to stay for the night, with many lovely hotels, restaurants, and shops.

From Nerja, you can drive to Frigiliana in under 15 minutes. This beautiful whitewashed mountain town is one of the most photogenic spots on your Andalusia 2-week road trip. Cobbled streets worm uphill, bordered by white houses with painted doorways and flower pots.

You could spend a few hours just getting lost in the streets, taking photos of each beautiful entranceway, and shopping in all the cute ceramic shops. We recommend booking dinner here one evening as many restaurants have terraces where you can sit and enjoy fantastic views of the valley below.

There are more accommodation options in Nerja, and you can easily access the beaches if you’d like to swim or sunbathe. If you want to stay in a villa, Frigiliana has many pool options, but you’ll need to book ahead as it’s very popular.

Day 8 – 9: Malaga (Half-Way on Your Andalusia Road Trip)

Welcome to dynamic Malaga, a beachside city with a picture-perfect old town. You can find almost everything in Malaga , whether it’s castles, museums, galleries (Malaga was the birthplace of Picasso), or street art. It’s also home to some of the best restaurants and cafes in Andalusia! 

Here are all your hotel options in Malaga.

Exploring the sights of the old town is a must-do on your 2-week Andalusia road trip, for example, the Alcazaba and the Castillo de Gibralfaro, which are both historical monuments with beautiful views of the city. If you have time, we also recommend taking a half-day trip to the Caminito del Rey , one of Spain’s most thrilling hikes.

Alternatively, if you want more of a beach break, there are plenty of great hotels next to the sea, which are still within walking distance of the city center. 

Day 10 – 11: Ronda

Beautiful Ronda is a place famous throughout Spain for its iconic bridge that hangs over the canyon. The town itself almost looks as if it is balancing precariously on top of the gorge, providing some of the most incredible views out over the Andalusian landscapes.

There are several viewpoints to see the bridge (Puente Neuvo) at its finest: either from below, the lovely Jardines de Cuenca, or the Mirador de Aldehuela. Grab your camera and take some incredible photos from these locations.

Day 12: Setenil de las Bodegas

Setenil de las Bodegas is one of the most unusual white villages of Andalusia and is a fascinating stop on your Andalusia road trip. This pretty town has houses wedged between and under the gorge rock, looking as if they’re almost growing out of the stone itself.

Day 13: Villaluenga del Rosario or Zahara de la Sierra

Villaluenga del Rosario and Zahara de la Sierra are another 2 of the white villages of Andalusia . This is a group of 19 whitewashed pueblos (small towns) in the region that are known for their charm and beauty.

Villaluenga del Rosario, meaning ‘town of the rosary,’ is unusual in that it hugs the side of the mountain and doesn’t have any hilltop viewpoints, unlike some of the other white villages in the area. However, it’s actually the highest, sitting at 900 meters above sea level! Many great hiking trails lead up into the mountains from here, and there are some beautiful, ancient sites within the town itself, from the old bull ring to the cemetery (one of the most picturesque we’ve ever seen).

Zahara de la Sierra

If you have some time, drive to Zahara de la Sierra for some of the most spectacular views you’ll find on your Andalusia road trip itinerary. If you want, you can also take a boat trip across the lake to see the town from a different angle.

Day 14 + 15: Cadiz

Cadiz has really different energy compared to many other places in Spain. Not only is it one of the oldest cities in all of Europe , but its southernmost nature makes it feel very raw, wild, and rugged.

The coastline has long sandy beaches, with plenty of wind for watersports, backed by the city’s ancient maze of streets and beautiful historic buildings. It’s also a port town, so you’ll see plenty of fishing boats bobbing on the water, giving it a village atmosphere even though it’s a reasonably sized city.

As it’s so far away from many of the bigger cities in Spain, like Barcelona or Madrid , it still has a very traditional Spanish feel (most restaurants only serve the traditional tapas menu and drinks). Two days is a great amount of time to explore the old city, climb the cathedral tower (incredible views), enjoy the nearby beaches, and shop in the local food markets.

Day 16: Seville (End of your Andalusia Road Trip)

Day 16 is the final day of your Andalusia road trip itinerary, and what a trip it’s been! From charming white villages nestled among the hilltops to beautiful coastal towns and Moorish cities, you’ve seen some of the most beautiful places in Spain . Drive back to Seville (1 hour 20 minutes) to drop your hire car and head home. You might even have time to squeeze in one last Spanish meal before your train or flight!

Tip: Seville has an airport with flights leaving to major cities in Spain, as well as France and beyond. If you’re looking to travel further afield, take a train from Seville back to major cities like Barcelona , Madrid , or Malaga, where you’ll find international airports with more flights.

How to visit Andalusia in 2 weeks

Andalusia is a massive region in southern Spain, with countless beautiful villages, hikes, and cities to explore. You could easily spend a month or more slowly working your way around the region. However, 2 weeks is the ideal amount of time to see the majority of Andalusia’s highlights. This Andalusia road trip itinerary (2 weeks) is designed to be done by car, although it is possible to use public transport (with a bit more planning). 

Getting to Andalusia

There are a few airports in Andalusia. However, Malaga is the biggest, with flights arriving from all over Europe as well as internal flights from other bigger cities in Spain.

If you’re flying into Barcelona or Madrid, consider taking the train to Andalusia. There are many high-speed, direct options that will get you to Malaga, Granada , or Seville in a matter of hours.

Getting Around Andalusia on your 2-week Road Trip

The best way to experience Andalusia is by car. The region is vast and very remote, meaning you’ll have greater freedom to reach the small villages and rural nature if you can drive. 

It is possible to travel by bus in Andalusia, but not all the destinations on this itinerary have public transport connections. You might have to make changes or take taxis to reach the more remote parts of Andalusia.

Buses move between the major cities and towns in Andalusia and are usually very cheap and comfortable. Make sure to do your research in advance as to whether you need to pre-book or can pay by cash on arrival. 

Trains link major cities in Andalusia, as well as some towns. For example, Seville , Malaga, Granada , and Cordoba. However, you won’t be able to reach any of the white villages by train.

Best Time to Visit Andalusia

The most popular time to visit Andalusia is during the summer when you can make the most of the beautiful beaches and warm Mediterranean Sea. However, be aware that the summer months are very busy and can be more expensive (particularly in August when the Spanish take their holidays). These are also the hottest months when temperatures in places like Cadiz and Seville can exceed 40°C (104°F). Because of this, it’s not the best time for city sightseeing. 

Instead, we recommend visiting in the shoulder seasons of late spring or early autumn. You’ll still get warm temperatures and beautiful sunny days, but it’ll be much more comfortable for sightseeing and road-tripping. Temperatures can be in the high 20s as late as the end of October!

Things to Know About Andalusia

There are a few things you can learn about Andalusia that will make your trip run a little more smoothly:

• Tap water is safe to drink in Andalusia. It is quite chlorinated, which can make it taste a little different from what you’re used to. However, drinking is safe, so bring your reusable water bottle and travel plastic-free ! 
• Siesta time. During the summer, all shops and restaurants close for siesta (typically somewhere between 4 PM – 8 PM). On Sundays, most conveniences are also shut.
• Public holidays. Spain is a country with some of the highest number of public holidays in the world! This means there is always a fiesta somewhere, so make sure to check ahead for shop, restaurant, and road closures.
• Hot summer temperatures . In August, temperatures can exceed 40°C (104°F). Make sure to plan your sightseeing in the early mornings or evenings to avoid being in the sun (the hottest time of day is usually around 4 PM). Make sure to wear a hat and sunscreen and drink plenty of water.
• Always carry cash , especially in small villages where sometimes card is not accepted.
• Bring extra layers if you’re traveling in the mountains, as it can get cooler in the evenings.

Hi Meghan! Spain in general is a safe country to travel to, with low crime rates. As long as you’re aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on your belongings in crowded areas (pick pocketing does happen) traveling should be a breeze. Though we recommend learning some Spanish words, people in Andalusia are very welcoming and kind, and see a lot of other travelers. You can always download Spanish offline on Google Translate for those moments English (and hand gestures) don’t seem to work. Though we don’t think many of those moments will occur :) The region also has good public transport that’s easy to navigate, making getting around very straightforward, even if you’re not familiar with Spanish. Hope that helps a bit!
