Adam Schroeder & Mark Masters celebrate Clark Terry: CT!

Read "CT!" reviewed by Pierre Giroux

by Pierre Giroux January 18, 2024

In jazz, where the past intertwines with the present and the future, few figures were as influential as the legendary trumpeter Clark Terry. During his playing career, he developed a creative, bouncy style with an irrepressible rhythmic verve that was entirely his own. The album CT! with baritone saxophonist Adam Schroeder and arranger Mark Masters serves as a heartfelt homage to this jazz icon, presenting fresh and invigorating arrangements of 13 Clark Terry originals skillfully performed by a 12-piece ensemble. ...

Brian Eisenberg Jazz Orchestra: Pain & Beauty

by Edward Blanco July 23, 2023

A religious man at heart, composer/band leader and producer Brian Eisenberg leads an 18-piece big band (The Brian Eisenberg Jazz Orchestra) on a personal musical exploration on the meaning of love through the perspective of what may be beautiful, and what may seem hurtful on the very introspective and challenging Pain & Beauty. The album, as he writes, “is dedicated to that ideal of genuine love...painful yet, beautiful love." Eisenberg sets the musical bar quite high on such lofty and ...

by John Kelman May 12, 2023

Dewa Budjana may not be a household name outside of his native country, Indonesia, but with MoonJune Records picking up this exciting guitarist and composer, all that could be about to change. He's already garnered some serious attention with his first recording for the label, Dawai in Paradise, released earlier this year (2013), but at home, he's nothing short of a pop star. Lead guitarist and songwriter for the multi-platinum, million-selling Indonesian pop/rock group Gigi, the fifty year-old Budjana has ...

The box set you hold in your hands features three players who came together in an exceptional group to play some of the most compelling and exploratory piano trio music of the 20th Century's final decade. This threesome, led by Peter Erskine, released four albums recorded between July 1991 and July 1997: 1993's You Never Know, 1994's Time Being, 1996's As It Is and 1999's Juni. That the drummer's critically acclaimed piano trio, also featuring Swedish double bassist Palle Danielsson, ...

Read "Live In Italy" reviewed by Jim Worsley

by Jim Worsley December 16, 2022

Pianist Alan Pasqua and drummer Peter Erskine have been playing together for over fifty years now. For over twenty years Darek Oles has completed the trio on double bass. While brilliant upper-echelon musicians in their own right, the magic that ensues in this trio is remarkable. Could playing together for so long, performing thousands of shows over the years lead to burnout or it becoming “old hat?" Not for these three true jazz cats. The conversations just get deeper, their ...

Massimo Colombo, Peter Erskine, Chuck Berghofer: Electric Parker

Read "Electric Parker" reviewed by Jim Worsley

by Jim Worsley December 10, 2022

While mostly under the radar, Massimo Colombo is surely one of Europe's finest talents. The Italian pianist and arranger has many works to his credit, including his exceptional tributes to Bud Powell and Weather Report, Powell To The People (Jazzland DZ, 2018) and Acoustic Weather (Self-produced, 2019). Colombo now reimagines the genius of Charlie Parker with drummer Peter Erskine and double bassist Chuck Berghofer. Having recorded together previously, the trio's chemistry flows easily. It is indeed electric as ...

Peter Erskine Earns 9th Career GRAMMY® Nomination for trio album Live in Italy (Fuzzy Music)

Live in Italy is nominated for Best Jazz Instrumental Album at the 65th GRAMMY® Awards

☆☆☆☆ – Downbeat Magazine

“A treat of swing and interplay..” – Vincent Cotro, Jazz Magazine

“..it’s a good example of Erskine and his other two longtime musicians showcasing their talents in a more traditional jazz trio format that has moments of intensity and joy,” – Tom Henry, Toledo Blade

New York, NY – Live in Italy , the dynamic live album from iconic jazz drummer Peter Erskine , has received a GRAMMY®  nomination for Best Jazz Instrumental Album . The masterful, lifelong drummer will celebrate his 9th career GRAMMY® nomination at the 65th annual GRAMMY® Awards this coming February 5, 2023 in Los Angeles.

Erskine released Live in Italy earlier this year in May, and the performance was recorded at a concert engagement in Camogli, Italy on November 19, 2021 following the trio’s two-week Italian tour. Alongside his long-standing trio with Alan Pasqua on keys and Darek Oles on bass, Erskine masterfully shapes the arc of each composition and brings a full set of colors to the evocative works displayed here.

peter erskine tour 2023

He adds: “I thank all the creative brothers and sisters keeping the music alive, as I thank our team of musicians and engineers: we may only be a trio, but a trio takes a village (plus a good venue and piano tuner). ‘Live in Italy’ is our way of thanking science and the universe for making public concerts possible once more. That so many  GRAMMY® members like what they heard gives me great joy and hope. Bravo to pianist Alan Pasqua and bassist Darek Oles.”

Capturing all of the beauty, nuance and grace of an evening in Camogli, Italy, and reflecting the exhilaration found in playing before a hungry audience in a beautiful concert hall, Live in Italy is a veritable masterclass in interplay and a chance for listeners to immerse themselves in a moment of time. Marked by jubilance, gratitude, wistfulness and deep intention, the performance on Live in Italy feeds off of the tremendous energy of Italian audiences and their bucolic surroundings.

Known for his musical versatility and love of working in contrasting musical contexts, Erskine has been drumming since the age of four. Fifty albums have been released under his name or a co-leader. The drum icon has enjoyed a fruitful career, with appearances on over 700 albums and film scores, and known for playing with legends such as Stan Kenton and Maynard Ferguson Big Bands , Weather Report , Joni Mitchell and Steely Dan , to name a few.

Peter Erskine is proud to be nominated alongside Joshua Redman, Terri Lyne Carrington, Wayne Shorter , and the Yellowjackets.

2023 Readers Poll: Peter Erskine Wins “Jazz”

2023 Readers Poll: Peter Erskine Wins “Jazz”

The winner of the “Jazz” category in Modern Drummer ‘s 2023 Readers Poll is… Peter Erskine !

Peter Erskine has continued his dominant streak as a jazz drummer, a clinician and educator, and an all-around great guy throughout the last year.  Modern Drummer is keen on sharing Peter Erskine’s words of wisdom each month for a reason — Erskine continues to dedicate himself to his craft, fostering new collaborations and focusing on educating the next generation of drummers around the world.

Erskine’s monthly “Jazz Insights” column allows him to impart his decades of experience onto readers of  Modern Drummer , and he’s developed an instructive, authoritative voice on how to better your talents behind the kit. In addition to his column in  Modern Drummer , Erskine continues to front his group The Erskine Trio, releasing the live album in 2022  Live In Italy and playing frequent gigs as a bandleader. He’s also published multiple books, including 2022’s re-release of “The Drum Perspective.”

The PGA Tour completed its Florida Swing and Peter Malnati walked away the winner of the last event in the Sunshine State. The University of Missouri grad shot a final-round 67 Sunday at the Valspar Championship to top Cameron Young by two shots at Innisbrook Resort's Copperhead Course.

It's Malnati's second PGA Tour victory, this one coming nine years after the first. It's also been 3,059 days. This one, however, sends him to the Masters this year, as well as the other three major championships. He's only ever played in three majors total.

Malnati also collected $1.512 million for his victory, from an $8.4 million total purse. It's Young's ninth runner-up finish on the PGA Tour as he continues to search for his first win. He took home $915,600.

Austin Eckroat won the Cognizant Classic at the Palm Beaches three weeks ago to start the Florida Swing before World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler dominated the next two weeks at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Players Championship.

PGA Tour pros hit the ugliest – and prettiest – shots you'll see Sunday at 2024 Valspar Championship

W ithin 30 minutes during the final round at the 2024 Valspar Championship a pair of PGA Tour players hit the best and worst shots you'll see from professionals.

First up was Robby Shelton.

Coming off his best season as a professional in 2023, the 28-year-old has been slow to start in 2024 and entered the week off a pair of missed cuts. He played his way to the weekend at Innisbrook Resort's Copperhead Course in Palm Harbor, Florida, and on Sunday hit a shot he won't soon forget. Shelton made an albatross on the par-5 14th hole after he sunk his approach from 258 yards out in the fairway.

This thing was a laser-guided missile destined to find the hole.

And then there was Peter Malnati, who has made headlines in recent weeks for his thoughts on the future of the PGA Tour and his touching reason for why he uses a yellow golf ball . In contention for his second win on Tour and first since 2015, Malnati found the fairway and pulled a hybrid from the bag for his second shot on the par-5 5th hole. With 291 yards to the cup, Malnati hit one of the uglier non-shanks you'll see from a pro. You can't quite call it a top because the ball somehow still went 172 yards, but he sure didn't catch it clean.

Even the broadcasters were confused about what they had just seen.

Professional golfers: sometimes they do the unthinkable and other times they're just like us amateurs.

Ed Sheeran with special guests Russ and Maisie Peters are headed to Levi’s® Stadium on September 16, 2023!

Multiple GRAMMY® Award-winning, global superstar Ed Sheeran has announced details for the North American leg of his “+ – = ÷ x Tour” (pronounced “The Mathematics Tour”), hitting stadiums across the continent for the first time since his history-making “Divide Tour” in 2018, which officially became the most-attended and highest-grossing tour of all time by its completion. Dates begin on May 6th at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX, before wrapping up on September 23rd at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, CA (see attached itinerary). Main support on a majority of the dates comes from multi-platinum artist Khalid (May 6th-September 2nd) with rapper/singer-songwriter Russ rounding out the tour (September 9th-23rd); Dylan, Cat Burns, Maisie Peters, and Rosa Linn alternate as first of three. Sheeran recently wrapped the UK/European leg of the “+ – = ÷ x Tour,” performing in front of over 3 million people in 6 months and highlighted by a five-night stand at London’s Wembley Stadium.

Kerry Crutchfield Q&A Hollywood Drum Show 2009

Q&a with kerry crutchfield hollywood drum show, october 2009.

Hootie and the Blowfish were voted Best New Artist at the Grammy’s the year Kerry “Crutch” Crutchfield and his wife, Patti—while driving home from a particularly “lame” San Francisco Drum Show—conceived the notion of The Hollywood Custom and Vintage Drum Show. Darius Rucker has since moved on to Burger King commercials and country music. Kerry is currently preparing for the 12th Annual Hollywood Drum Show. He might prefer the publishing royalties for “Only Wanna Be with You,” but we’re happy the popular L.A. drum-community event has outlived the Blowfish.

We sent Kerry some questions and his answers are printed unedited.

Hollywood Drum: Congratulations on the imminent 12th Annual Hollywood Drum Show. What are the origins of the show and your history with it?

Kerry Crutchfield: My wife and I drove up to San Francisco in 1996 for the ill fated San Francisco Drum Show. It was pretty lame, held in a hotel banquet room. Including us there were only 6 exhibitors, and virtually no attendees. On the long drive down the coast coming home we started talking about how we would have produced a better event, and the idea for a Hollywood Show was born.

HD: The show is returning to its original home this year at Raleigh Studios, Hollywood. We’ve seen a long residency at Remo Center, and more recent one-offs at Pasadena Conference Center and KFWB Studios. Am I leaving someplace out? It seems locating an appropriate and available venue must be one of the more challenging aspects of putting this event together now. Please describe that process. Has The Hollywood Drum Show found another stable home in Raleigh?

Kerry: In 1998, the 2nd year, we rented the entire 2nd floor of The Hollywood Park Racetrack Casino. It turned out to be overkill, since we tried to buck the trend and held the event on Labor Day Weekend. Big mistake!! Everybody was out of town. Probably the poorest show we did. You would think it would be easy to find a venue here in Los Angeles that we could use every year, but that has not been the case at all. It is extremely difficult to find a suitable place that will allow us to do what we do, provide parking, lots of noise etc at a price that makes sense. It remains to be seen if Raleigh Studios can be a long term deal.

HD: I imagine that you begin work on next year’s show the day after everyone packs their toys and goes home. Give us an idea of what planning these events entails for you throughout the year.

Kerry: First of course is securing a venue. Then we start recruiting the various potential exhibitors, trying to get commitments, wooing and securing guest artists, clinicians, working with their touring schedules etc.

HD: The clinics and performances have become an important part the proceedings. I know that it helps the draw, but I have a feeling that there is more to it for you than that. The show itself is a community gathering and a celebration of drumming. How has this evolved?

Kerry: The first show we had only one clinic. Ian Wallace and I were good friends, and I called him for a favor and sure enough he flew out from New Mexico and did a great clinic, even brought Freddie Gruber up for Q & A afterward. He was scheduled to play at Pasadena for the 10th anniversary show, but tragically became too ill and passed away soon after. It has now become a tradition of great drummers wanting to be part of the gig each year. When you look at the names of past performers it’s pretty awesome. Louie Bellson, Hal Blaine, Ed Shaughnessy, Stanton Moore, Don Osborne, Bun E Carlos, Jeff Hamilton, JR Robinson, Gary Novak, Virgil Donati, Smitty Smith, Clayton Cameron, Peter Erskine, Gregg Bissonette, it is all “A” list talent. Everyone wants to out do each other. It’s great!. Bernie Dresel and I have been trying to get him at the show for years, but he would always end up out on tour with Brian Setzer Orchestra. This year it finally worked out, and I get the luxury of watching him play at our show, very cool!

HD: How many exhibitors will there be this year, and has the number increased regularly from show to show? How is the demand for these shows trending in general, especially given that vintage gear just keeps getting more vintage and rare? What about the custom market? It seems custom-makers are leveling off after a boom. What’s the future for vintage and custom?

Kerry: We have 35 exhibitors this year. It varies each year, up and down. The vintage scene is dropping like a stone, at least here on the west coast. I think most of the vintage gear has found a permanent home or has been sold on Ebay to someone in Japan. The economy has certainly had its effect on the market, as virtually all the music stores I have visited are crying the blues. There are quite a few custom builders making some great gear, and I think that trend will continue, although not as much. The big time vintage boom is over, and I don’t think we will see any new shows popping up that are all about vintage stuff. We actually do not call our show “The Vintage Show” anymore; we just call it “The Hollywood Drum Show”

HD: Are you a vintage or custom man yourself? A collector? Tell us what gear you own and who’s your baby?

Kerry: I stopped collecting a few years ago, as it had gotten out of control. I sold a ton of gear, and kept the stuff I really dig. I have several 60’s Camco sets , 3 Leedy Ludwig sets, some old Slingerland Radio Kings, and a bunch of snares. I got a new Dunnett Classic Titanium snare from Ronn last year that I really love, and a custom made mahogany snare from Stan at Pro Drum Shop that is a killer.

HD: This is a big job you undertake annually. What’s most satisfying for you: The planning, the event itself, or the aftermath?

Kerry: The most satisfying part is seeing the appreciative faces of the guys at the show. When someone comes up to me and tells me they really enjoy the show and thank me for continuing to do it each year, it makes it all worth it.

HD: A simple question, or not: Why do you do it?

Kerry: Originally it was a great way to find and collect vintage drums. After the 3rd show, it kinda became a “drum family” get together event, a big party if you will. Now it’s got a life of its own, and people come together from all over the world to hang out at the show.

HD: Tell us a strange, funny, inspirational, or otherwise remarkable story that comes to mind recalling the past 11 Hollywood Drum Shows.

Kerry: Frankie Capp was to play and do a clinic at the 6th annual show in 2002. He came out on stage, started talking, and sat down at his drums. After playing for about 20 seconds, he stopped and said he found playing drums by himself boring, so he wasn’t gonna play anything. So he is taking questions from the crowd, and telling everyone that his Remo drumset is made out of paper, not real wood. About that time Mr. Remo Belli walked out onto the stage and firmly corrected him as to what his drums were actually made from. Frankie didn’t know what to say, turned beet red. The year before that, Kofi Baker had just finished a long, incredible drum solo and fell of his throne, landed right on his butt. Got a great round of applause!

HD: HollywoodDrum.com always ends our Q&As with an open drum solo—what else would you like to share with the all the L.A. drummers out there?

Kerry: Just to remind them that while our show is not perfect, it is the ONLY show of it’s kind on the West Coast, so they should not complain about parking, or having to pay ten bucks each day to get in, or say we don’t have enough vintage stuff, but embrace the event for what it is and enjoy it. Where else can you meet and chat with the owners and builders of all the great drum companies, cymbal makers etc? Where else can you also see 6 of the worlds greatest drummers perform, talk with them, pick their brains, over a weekend for a 20 dollar bill? It’s not a money maker for us, so we need the support of our community. Our show IS the people. Without the people, there is no show.

The 12th Annual Hollywood Drum Show takes place October 17th and 18th at Raleigh Studios, Hollywood, CA

FC Barcelona return to the United States for preseason tour

FC Barcelona return to the United States for preseason tour

The FC Barcelona men’s first team will repeat the last season’s destination and travel once again to the United States for their preseason tour, BARÇA ON TOUR: US 2023, in which they will play a total of four matches, all against European opposition. The first two games will be played in California; 22 July against Juventus in Santa Clara, San Francisco Bay Area, and on 26 July against Arsenal FC. The last two games will take place in Dallas Texas, for the clash with Real Madrid on 29 July and in Las Vegas where the tour will conclude with a game against AC Milan.

The US Summer Tour 2022 saw the Barça play on the East Coast with games in Miami and New York – as well as games in Las Vegas and Dallas – cities which hosted the majority of the Club’s institutional and social activities. This year the geographical emphasis has shifted to the West Coast where the majority of the Club’s activities will take place and where they will play three of their four scheduled games.

mini_3200x2000_web

The blaugranes’ debut on the tour will come on 22 July against Juventus in the Levis Stadium, Santa Clara in San Francisco, home of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers. It will be the third time that Barça have played at the venue which has room for 68,000 fans following matches against Manchester United in 2015 and AC Milan in 2018. The most recent encounter between Barça and Juventus came in a friendly last season on tour, the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

The other games in California will come against Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side on 26 July in the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Los Angeles, a venue opened in 2020 with a capacity of 70,000 and the ground where the Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams of the NFL play their home matches. The fixture between the two sides will be their first in seven seasons, the last meeting having come in the last sixteen of the UEFA Champions League in 2016 in which Barça won 2-0 in London and 3-1 at Spotify Camp Nou. The game will also be the first on American soil between the two clubs.

Another Clásico in Arlington, Texas

The summer tour this year will also include one of the most awaited matches for the fans, the Clásico, the third meeting between Barça and Real Madrid in the USA. He game will take place at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas which has a capacity of 80,000 and is home to the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys. The venue is one that Barça have visited twice previously; in 2011 against Manchester United and in 2018 against AS Roma. In their two previous games against Real Madrid in the US, Barça have come out on top both times: winning 3-2 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami in 2017 and 1-0 at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas in 2022.

The Allegiant Stadium, which holds 65,000 fans, will be the venue for the final game of the tour for Xavi Hernández’s men against AC Milan, the third game on the west coast. The two teams have met on two previous occasions on US soil with a 2-0 win for Barça in 2003 in Washington and a 1-0 win for the Italians in 2018 in Santa Clara.

These four games during BARÇA ON TOUR: US 2023 are part of the Soccer Champions Tour, a tournament put together by Sixth Street in collaboration with Legends and AEG, and in which, aside from Barça and their four opponents on the tour, Manchester United will also be participating.

The USA, a popular destination for blaugrana preseason

This summer’s tour will be the 14 th in FC Barcelona history to the USA (the first in 1937 was key in the Club’s survival), a country that has become a popular destination in recent years with tours taking place in 2011, 2015, 2017, 2018, the latter being a joint tour with the women’s team, as well as 2019 and 2022.

In fact, the North American market in a key priority for the globalisation and expansion the Barça brand. Football is undergoing a great period of growth in the USA that trend will hopefully continue with the next World Cup in 2026 taking place on North American soil. Furthermore, FC Barcelona opened a US office in New York in 2016 and continues its efforts to build a greater connection with its existing fans and win more followers and reach agreements with local sponsors to help develop even further the country’s footballing ecosystem.
