Topas Lodge Trips

Sapa is where it all began for Topas back in the early 90s, pioneering treks between minority villages.

Today, we have the acclaimed Topas Ecolodge high on a hilltop outside town.

We invite you to discover another side of Sapa with us on experiences including these two unique properties.

Giving Back & Charity Work

At Topas we have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to charity work in Vietnam.

We have two charity streams:

Working with NGO partners

Our partners include Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation, Newborns Vietnam, Hue Help and Operation Smile.

Implementing our own projects

These projects are carried out in Sapa, because this is where we have deep roots going back to 1993 and our own project manager on the ground.

Our main focus is education. We have built schools in a number of villages in the Sapa area.   For more info on our charity work and our responsible travel ethics, please see our Charity and Principles page here .

If you want to travel with a company that has a direct, transparent, positive impact on Vietnam, then we invite you to travel with us.

Built-in 2003, Topas Ecolodge Sapa was built based on the dream of travelers who love hiking and exploring – the desire to have a mountain resort with basic amenities that is close to nature and the local ethnic minorities. Therefore, you will not find modern entertainment facilities such as TV or wifi here, helping you to immerse yourself in nature. In particular, Topas Ecolodge Vietnam also tries to minimize single-use plastic waste, by encouraging people to bring their own toothbrushes and toiletries.

Topas Ecolodge Vietnam represents its class in the magnificent landscape and a unique combination of two seemingly opposite schools: Nordic ecological spirit and Vietnamese design style. The rooms here are furnished with simple, refined, and elaborate interior decoration in every detail, highly functional yet cozy with minimal Danish elements. Staying at Topas Ecolodge Sapa, you can easily see neutral colors, natural light, sleek modern furniture with gentle lines and subtle curves, warm-toned wood details, green plants, and applicable items. Combining the above factors into common Vietnamese materials, you will feel the “luxury” and richness meticulously put into every detail, while still being friendly to nature.

Currently, Topas Ecolodge Sapa has a total of 41 bungalows, all made from white granite taken from Hoang Lien Mountain and cut by the hands of the most skillful craftsmen in Ninh Binh. All rooms are arranged with 1 double bed or 2 single beds, and a private balcony in the bedroom from which you can enjoy the magnificent view of the mountains. You can choose between 4 types of bungalow rooms to suit your budget and requirements:

Located at the end of the resort, this is the original room type of Topas Ecolodge Sapa, with an area of 28.5m2 including 1 bedroom and 1 bathroom with amenities, fitting for 3 adults or 2 adults and 1 child under 12 years old. Each bungalow exudes rustic beauty from solid stone walls and is equipped with heating, two-way air conditioning, refrigerator, safe and toiletries, premium warm blankets,...

Room rate: $204 - 548 / room / night

Each Suite Bungalow includes 1 living room, 1 bathroom and 1 bedroom with separate toilet, as well as other amenities such as 2-way air-conditioner, humidifier, and coffee machine. Right from the private balcony, you can enjoy the stunning picture of nature with a panoramic view of the towering mountains interwoven with luxuriant pine forests and terraced rice fields . From this type of Topas Ecolodge Sapa room, you have access to a Premium Executive Bungalow through a private garden, furnished with outdoor furniture, perfect for groups like family or friends.

Room rate: $290 - 638 / room / night

Deluxe Suite Bungalow, possessing modern environmentally friendly equipment is the newest room class of Topas Ecolodge in Sapa Vietnam, consisting of 2 floors with a total area of 60m2 with the same capacity as Suite Bungalow, decorated in an elegant Nordic style. Located near the infinity pool, the bungalow offers impressive views overlooking the rolling green mountains and valleys hidden in the clouds.

Expected to launch in summer 2022 in Topas Resort, this is the first eco-villa with a swimming pool. Located next to the peaceful village road connecting to Lech Village, the Pool Villas are separate from the rest of the resort, providing maximum privacy and tranquility. Newly put into operation in mid-2017, the infinity saltwater pool is the most impressive highlight of Topas Lodge Sapa. Considered one of the most beautiful infinity pools in Vietnam, it is designed in the middle of the hill, including upper and lower pools connected by a staircase, surrounded by terraced fields and mountains. The upper pool has a dedicated area for children with a depth of about 70cm and an adult pool with a depth of about 1.4m - 1.68m. If you are not a guest, you can still use the pool from 10am to 4pm and must buy a “Day Pass” tour, which is sold at the Topas Ecolodge Sapa office for 500,000 VND / adult ($22.08) and 250,000 VND / child ($11.04).

For the ultimate in relaxation, the Rice Spa in the resort offers comprehensive and detailed care services. Besides massage, Rice Spa also offers a herbal bath service, made with a range of local medicinal herbs carefully selected by the Red Dao people, lifting your spirits after a tiring day of exploring. Remember to reserve the service at the front desk and arrive on time (10 minutes in advance). Your treatment time will be limited if you arrive late. Opening hours: 10am - 8pm

Based on the principles of sustainable development and environmental friendliness, Topas Ecolodge Resort has built a clean food supply chain with premium imported ingredients such as meat and cheese. In addition, there are local products including seasonal ingredients along with rice, vegetables , poultry, fish,… and fruits harvested in the surrounding villages or in the resort’s own organic garden. The Danish chef at Topas Ecolodge Sapa is constantly communicating and working closely with the local team to bring you awe-inspiring culinary experiences at this remote mountain top resort. You will also be served wine and cocktails, or bring your favorite wine to enjoy, but no other food or drink is allowed.

The Stilt House Restaurant

Located in the heart of Topas Resort, this restaurant is where most of your meals are served, featuring a romantic outdoor terrace and a small patio where you can enjoy coffee or Vietnamese tea . The menu here is a desirable combination of European cuisine with Vietnamese influences, reflected in the taste and variety of dishes, including special diets.

- Mountain style buffet breakfast: 7am - 10am

- Lunch: 11am - 9pm

Pavilion Barbeque in Topas Ecolodge Sapa

This barbecue restaurant features an open-air outdoor space in one of two hilltop gazebos, surrounded by unspoiled natural landscapes, giving you the chance to enjoy dinner under a starry sky. Seating is limited so you should make a reservation at the front desk as soon as you arrive at Topas Ecolodge Resort, but only if the weather permits, with no rain or high winds. The enticing menu here includes delicious BBQ dishes all grilled over an open-air stove or charcoal grill, along with seasonal delicacies and local specialties. Pavilion Barbeque in Topas Ecolodge Sapa also does not use any chemicals to kill insects, so you should remember to use insect repellent (eco-friendly) or/and wear long clothes to avoid mosquito bites.

Topas Ecolodge Lounge

Also located in the main building, this cozy area is next to the reception and directly below The Stilt House restaurant in the campus of Topas Lodge Sapa. Equipped with high-speed Wi-Fi and a diverse cocktail bar, it is also possible for you to borrow some interesting books, board games or toys for children.

Topas Ecolodge Sapa organizes a walking tour to explore the Nam Pa valley, with a BBQ lunch served amidst watershed streams and rice fields, prepared by a Red Dao woman. The menu is simple yet elegant, including sparkling/white wine or squeezed juice, paired with Sapa strawberries dipped in melted chocolate, or freshly baked hot cookies and fruit.

Located right next to the infinity pool of Topas Ecolodge Resort Sapa, this bar serves a variety of snacks, drinks, and fruits, ranging from homemade pizzas to mountain-inspired iced teas, and the Moscow Mules - a wonderfully refreshing cocktail.

Topas Ecolodge

Young woman looking out the window on the mountains

Surrounded by rice terraces, rolling hills, green forests and villages, Topas Ecolodge Sapa is a Danish-owned boutique property situated atop two conical hills deep in the mountains of Hoang Lien National Park, 45 minutes’ drive from Sapa in northern Vietnam.

Chalet-style Chic

Accommodation comprises 41 chalet-style stone bungalows in four different categories: Premium Executive Bungalows, Suite Bungalows, Deluxe Suite Bungalows, and the new and exclusive Pool Villas. Each bungalow and villa is constructed in local white granite, with its own private balcony offering glorious views of the rice terraces, the lower Sapa Valley and the Tonkinese Alps beyond.

The rooms are furnished in a cool minimal style in an unmistakably Scandinavian aesthetic, all with ensuite tiled bathrooms. Solar panels heat the water and provide electricity for the lights. Heating is provided during the winter months. There is no television or Wi-Fi in the rooms so be prepared to unplug and reconnect with nature. All bungalows can be configured with either one queen size or two twin beds.

Dining With A Danish Touch

All meals are served in a central two-storey building. Downstairs is a relaxing bar with cushioned furniture, while dining takes place on the upper floor. Topas Ecolodge is flanked by its own farm, which supplies the kitchen with fresh vegetables.

The Danish owners have developed a sustainable food supply system created from premium international ingredients such as imported meats and cheese as well as high-quality local ingredients. The Danish head chef works closely with a local team to create hearty Asian meals, served on a set-menu basis, which changes daily depending on seasonal produce.

Sublime Spa & Infinity Pools

Topas Ecolodge has two infinity pools, both with jaw dropping views of the peaks and valleys. The upper pool has a shallow section suitable for children and is heated with an eco-friendly system using 85% less energy than standard heating technology. The lower pool and jacuzzi is for adults only.

The Rice Spa offers traditional Red Dzao herbal baths and an array of wellness treatments, including massages and facials, created from the combination of ancient knowledge, local materials, and modern techniques. Mountain bikes are available free of charge, and the lodge offers a great range of excursions around the area.

A Base For Exploration

The epic natural scenery and mountain trails surrounding Topas Ecolodge Sapa, make it an ideal base for exploring the awe-inspiring nature of northern Vietnam as well as the diverse minority villages of the area via active pursuits such as hiking and biking as well as cultural immersion through ethnic village visits, market stops, and textile workshops. A free shuttle bus operates daily to and from Sapa Town, 11 miles away.

Furthermore, you will enjoy all the comforts of a pleasant stay in an environment that is making a commitment to preservation and sustainable development of the nature and people of Sapa Valley.

Meant as a way of sparking conversation between strangers and those who already know each other, it’s really much more than “just food”. We’ve done the hard work for you, bringing you the top tapas tours in Madrid!

Madrid Tapas Tour Reviews

1.  tapas, taverns & history tour madrid.

  • Duration: 4 hours
  • Departure: C. de la Misericordia, 2, 28013 Madrid
  • Departure Time: 6:30 pm
  • Includes: Small-group tour (maximum 10 guests), food tastings (enough for a full dinner), wine tastings (5 glasses of local wine and drinks), expert local culinary guide, Devouring Madrid guide, packed with all our favorite places to eat and drink in the city

Starting things off on the right foot, we have the Tapas, Taverns & History Tour Madrid . The title sums up this 4-hour tour pretty well, leading you through all kinds of local historical and culinary highlights. As Madrid can get pretty hot, this is a tour that takes place in the afternoon, which is perfect for enjoying some classic Spanish drinks as well!

Limited to just 10 people, this walking tour is much more personal and feels like you’re learning about the city with local friends. Meet up with your guide in central Madrid and start off by walking over to a chill, ambient bar. Here, you’ll get to try a vermouth aperitif that everyone seems to love.

This legendary tavern is deeply connected to the country’s Civil War, and try a tapa dish that’s been served this way for over a century.

After you have a delicious drink and some food in your stomach, it’s time to head off on a 45-minute history walk through the oldest neighborhoods in the city, towards the Royal Palace. Your guide will fill you in on how Madrid started as a quaint village and exploded over the years into an enormous empire.

Now that you’ve walked quite a bit, it’s time to head to the next tapas bar: Mesón del Champiñon. As the name suggests, it’s all about delicious grilled mushrooms, along with some Padrón peppers.

After these treats, head to Plaza Mayor and learn about all kinds of interesting anecdotes and stories that took place here over the centuries.

You’ll walk by Petit Palace Posada del Peine (city’s oldest hotel), Puerta del Sol, and then try signature tapas of gambas al ajillo and wine at La Casa del Abuelo. Meaning “grandfather’s house”, it’s a very homey place that’s been in business for over 100 years.

You’ll then check out Plaza de Santa Ana and learn about the square originally constructed in 1910 during Joseph Bonaparte’s reign. Then, fit your way into Casa Toni which is one of the only traditional tapas places left in the city, where you’ll try all kinds of incredible classic specialties.

More Information & Tour Booking

  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Departure: Plaza de Santa Ana, 28012 Madrid
  • Departure Time: 12:30 PM or 7:30 PM
  • Includes: Local guide, wine tasting, tasting more than 12 different tapas, visit to 4 tapas bars (Where Madrileños go), a drink (Wine, Beer, Soda or Mineral Water) at each bar

Next up, we have a slightly shorter tour which gives you excellent insight into delicious tapas and learn about Spanish cuisine.

The Madrid Tapas and Wine Tasting Tour takes you to various stops comprised of hidden gems, and varied experiences for more of a locals-only take on things. This is a fantastic tour for trying out tapas the way they’re meant to be enjoyed while learning all about them.

Limited to a group size of just 12 people, you’ll have a more intimate experience which is perfect as some of the tapas spots are pretty compact. Whether you’re going alone or with family/a partner, you’re sure to meet some interesting people as well.

Meet your guide in central Madrid (Plaza de Santa Ana) where you’ll all start walking to the first location. As you stroll along, the guide will offer a fascinating commentary about Madrid’s culinary scene, the history of tapas, and more.

Once you get to the Literary Quarter/Barrio de Las Letras, you’ll begin your bar crawl! You’ll visit a total of 4 tapas bars here, with wine tastings at each one. These wines are locally-made from Spanish grapes like tempranillo, malvar, garnacha, and parellada. With each type, you’ll be served a tapa dish made to match them perfectly.

One of the crowd favorites was the Castilian sherry bar, where you’ll learn all about fortified wines that are particularly popular in this area. If you’ve never tried them before, be prepared because you’re going to love them.

The second bar gives speakeasy vibes, as it’s literally hidden behind a store! The third is a bustling, cozy little tavern that’ll transport you back hundreds of years. The fourth is a bit bohemian and mysterious, and has been around for well over a century.

3. Madrid Local Tapas & Wine tour w/ Drinks & Views from a Rooftop

  • Duration: 4.5 hours
  • Departure: Pl. de San Miguel, 7, 28005
  • Departure Time: 11:30 AM, 6:00 PM
  • Includes: Local English-speaking guide, 4 stops of Tapas accompanied by wine, beer or soft drinks, cocktail on a terrace in Madrid in the 6:00PM tour

Have friendly, knowledgeable guides take you through Madrid from a locals’ point-of-view. Their passion for gastronomy and history is contagious, and will surely teach you a thing or two about tapas and Madrid’s rich background.

The Madrid Local Tapas & Wine tour with Drinks & Views from a Rooftop is one of the most comprehensive of its kind, making it quite a popular option.

Take a step back in time to the 17 th century, as you stroll through these historic streets while your guides provide commentary on the incredible architecture that lines them.

Madrid is a city heavily influenced on various cultures of people who moved from other countries to make Spain their home, while still keeping tradition at the forefront of their tapas and wines.

Meet your guide(s) at a central Madrid spot and head straight into the lively bohemian barrio of La Latina. Built on the site of a medieval Islamic fort, it consists of maze-like streets that are packed full of tapas bars, ancient gardens, and local legends.

Stop in front of the Opera House where you’ll hear many intriguing stories about its origins and events that took place here.

Next up is the Chocolatería San Ginés, where you’ll partake in a chocolate tasting and churros! Spanish churros are really something else, especially if your only prior experience with them are those in the US.

After fueling up on these treats, stroll around the center of Madrid as your guide takes you around some of the most important landmarks such as Plaza Mayor and de la Villa. As you see each, you’ll hear about the history about how the Spanish monarchy ruled over the Madrileños for many years.

After this, it’s time to eat some more at Mercado San Miguel, which has been serving hungry guests for over 100 years. Try a few different dishes while learning about the country’s culinary background, important traditions, and how their gourmet markets operated back in the day and presently.

Don’t get too full, because you’re then going to see el Mercado la Cebada local grocery market, and walk through El Rastro, which is the largest flea market in all of Spain! You’ll learn about the rather unpleasant origins of the name, along with its gypsy community background.

4. The Original Madrid Tapas Crawl

  • Duration: 2.5 hours
  • Departure: Calle de José Abascal, 18, Calle de José Abascal, 18, 28003 Madrid
  • Departure Time: 6:30 PM
  • Includes:  Dinner, alcoholic beverages, local guide, suggestions for your days left in town, food and culture tips

Long story short, The Original Madrid Tapas Crawl is a ton of fun, a ton of flavor, and has been operating for many years. This top-rated tour has earned its stars for good reason, traveling to 4 different family-owned businesses with your small group for a customized experience.

If you’re looking for a tour that’s easy to fit into a busy schedule, this 2.5-hour excursion should be at the top of your list!

From even before you meet up with your group and guide, you’ll notice how well-organized and seamless the entire tour is. Meet up right by Alonso Cano subway elevator and make sure that you go with an empty stomach, because the amount of tapas you’re about to try will equal a full meal!

Your guide will lead you to a very non-touristy part of town which offers a more authentically Madrid experience.

You’ll visit 4 different locations, including a market cuisine restaurant with refreshing, cold cerveza, a modern “slow food” tavern, and a bodega that’s over 100 years old!

As you enjoy your drinks and tapas (including Iberian dried meat, seafood, prime extra virgin olive oil, pork belly, Spanish omelet, etc.), your guide will tell you all about the history behind the dishes and each place.

If you’re not a beer fan, you can opt for red or white wine, vermouth, and non-alcoholic options that match well with your tapas. They are also very accommodating to varied diets, intolerances, or allergies to ensure everyone can participate and have a great time.

5. Madrid walking tasting tour with Secret Food Tours

  • Departure: El Oso y el Madroño, Prta del Sol, 1, 28013 Madrid
  • Departure Time: 3:00 PM
  • Includes:  Beverages, food tasting, wine tasting, local guide, snacks, bottled water, alcoholic beverages

This 3-hour tour is a perfect balance of history, modern-day relevance, and Spanish culinary history. The 3-Hour Tapas Secret Food Tour of Madrid w/ Private Tour Option covers so much of Madrid’s culture, with a whopping 8 stops! Make sure to grab your favorite walking shoes because you’re going to be covering quite a bit of land, too!

This is a fantastic tour for all ages, however, it’s important to remember that the drinking age in Spain is 18 and not every child may enjoy the tapas. However, it’s still a fun time for the entire family, for friend groups, couples, and even if you’d like to check it out yourself!

After meeting in central Madrid, head into Sobrino de Botín – the oldest restaurant continuously operating on the planet! That’s right, it originally opened in 1725, essentially making it older than the United States of America!

It was even mentioned in a Hemingway novel, regarding its famous roast suckling pig that you can try on your tour.

Next, head to the Mercado San Miguel, which has also been very popular for years – particularly with tourists. Located very closely is Plaza Mayor, which was once the epicenter of “Madrid Viejo”.

At one time is hosted important executions and bullfights, and today holds much more lighthearted events: Christmas markets and various artisanal souvenirs.

Next, see the Royal Palace of Madrid, which is the official residence of the Spanish royal family and is now used for state ceremonies.

Close by is the practically hidden Chocolatería San Ginés café where you can enjoy some delicious coffee paired with their famously appetizing chocolate. After your treats, head to Puerta del Sol square, which is another vital meeting spot in the city.

6. Madrid Evening Tapas Adventure Walking Tour with a Local

  • Departure: Plaza de la Villa, Pl. de la Villa, Madrid
  • Departure Time: 7:00 PM
  • Includes:  Local English-speaking guide 1 drink and 1 tapas dish at each stop (5 tastings stops – including a cheese and olive tasting, a bocadillo de calamares sandwich, a croquette tasting and a Spanish dessert), various types of drinks

Ever want to explore Madrid the way the locals do? While it’s always fun to see the biggest tourist attractions, those don’t always show you what the local culture is really like. The Madrid Evening Tapas Adventure Walking Tour with a Local will show you some local gems and teach you all about the history of the city’s literary quarter.

This 4-hour tour is limited to a maximum of 12 participants, which means you’ll have more attention from your guide and be able to ask questions comfortably. Not to mention, you’ll all be able to fit into these places easier, as some of the bars are pretty limited in seating.

Meet up at Plaza de la Villa, centrally-located for convenience! Your first mission is Mercado San Miguel, which is a very popular local market. Here, you’ll try a vermouth aperitivo, an array of Spanish cheeses, wine, and some of the most delicious olives you’ve ever tasted.

After, you’ll go over to the bustling barrio of La Latina , with maze-like lanes packed with bars offering tasty tapas and craft cocktails. The bar your group will be going to has just 6 tables so there’s definitely high demand (and with good reason!).

Then, head to Plaza Mayor which is also very rich in history and culinary culture. Learn about the events that have taken place in the plaza and enjoy an old tavern’s famous croquettes that’ve been served here for over 100 years. After enjoying these delicious potato treats, you’ll try some local desserts along with some dessert wine!

Clocking in at a bit less than 3 hours, you’ll get to try some of the country’s best tapas along with famous wines offered at the most reputable locations around the city.

Madrid Travel Guide

Getting there.

Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas is the main airport of Madrid, which is just 20 minutes or so from the city center or el centro . With 4 different terminals, it comes with quite a bit of shopping and other facilities. You can easily score a flight directly to Madrid from the vast majority of airports around the US as most of the major airlines serve this route.

The main carriers are Iberia , American Airlines, and Delta Airlines. In fact, if you’re flying from NYC or O’Hare in Chicago, you can expect direct flights in the off-season to cost you around 500 bucks!

Getting Around

The metro fares depend on which neighborhood you’re in, however, they’ll pretty consistently range from 1.50 to 2 euros (approx. $1.75 to $2.30). If you plan on using it frequently throughout your visit, you can also opt for a Tourist Card. These are either 1-day, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 7-day quantities. We did the math, and they almost always are more budget-friendly. Just remember that it is open from 6am to 1:30am.

Bus – Available from 6am to 11:30pm, Monday through Friday, and 7am to 11pm on the weekends, the bus also covers a good amount of the city. However, there are also night buses that start at 11:30pm and take over into the late hours! This is perfect if you want to catch a rave, a late-night drink and dinner, or simply want to see the city from a different view.

Taxi – Taxis are always an option, and hailing them off the street is pretty simple. Throughout various tourist destinations, you’ll also often see them lining up just waiting for customers. Remember, that the ones who have lit up green lights on the roofs are those that are available. Try to ride only with the city’s official cabs, which are white with a red diagonal stripe on the sides, along with Madrid’s emblem.

Alternatively, you can use a ride-sharing app. Uber does operate in the city, so this is an option.

Tip: Always make sure that the taximeter is on as soon as your trip starts! Some drivers will keep it off to try and scam some extra cash from you. If your driver doesn’t speak English, you can ask them to turn it on like this: “Disculpe, se puede prender el meter, por favor?”.

Where to Stay

Madrid consists of many different neighborhoods, with quite a few being very attractive for tourists. No matter what your budget is, you’ll realistically find somewhere that works for you.

  • For the luxe and plush, opt for Salamanca . In fact, the neighborhood’s Calle de Serrano is often compared to New York City’s Upper East Side, and referred to as “The Golden Mile”.
  • If you’re on a budget, head to Lavapies or Chueca . Both areas are very affordable, and are easy to navigate by foot.
  • If you’re traveling with children/the entire family, check out Barrio de Las Letras , or Sol-Gran Via . Sol-Gran Via is the area located between Puerta del Sol and Gran Via. This is the center of Madrid’s “cultural spots”. It features all kinds of theaters, boutiques, along with many very important buildings and unique architecture.
  • If you’re planning on going out to bars, clubs, and other nightlife scenes, check out Chueca , or La Latina . Chueca is a lively area full of people from all walks of life, all ages, and interests. The cafes and masterly-crafted cocktails here are incredible. La Latina is also very high-energy, and you’ll find many little markets, tapas bars, and “block parties”.
  • If you’re top priority in Madrid is to try the most delicious food possible, you can stay anywhere in El Centro . This is actually one of the safest, most pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods in the city. Not to mention, the elaborate architecture, palaces, etc. are some of the most impressive in the entire country.

Restaurants and Eating Out

As you can imagine, Madrid has some of the best food in the world. Let’s go ahead and look at some of the city’s top restaurants and eateries.

Saddle – Saddle is absolutely an artistic experience. It’s high-class, very elegant, yet intimate rather than stuffy. By combining modern-day with classic techniques, you’ll find this place to be refined yet varied. All on one floor, you’ll find private rooms and an expansive dining room with beautiful views.

Cruz Blanca de Vallecas – Consistently award-winning, Cruz Blanca de Vallecas offers Spanish food, placing tradition at the forefront of the operation. With international standards, this restaurant es made to make you feel like you’re coming home. Just make sure you book far in advance, as it can be booked up to 3 months at times!

Casa Benigna – If you go to Spain, you have to try paella. It’s just an unspoken rule. For excellent paella, make sure you head to Casa Benigna . The rice-based dish features arroz negro, squid ink, beans, meat, and more.

El Cisne Azul – Located in Chueca, El Cisne Azul is known for their wild mushrooms, with dishes that incorporate them like grilled boletus with foie gras and mushroom carpaccio. If you’re not a fan of mushrooms, you’re in the clear, as they also offer grilled meats and other dishes.

El Meson del Boqueron – El Meson del Boqueron offers basically the best callos a la madrileña we’ve had. With tripe, morcilla, and chorizo, it’s definitely packed with flavor and is perfect for any kind of weather. The restaurant itself is very captivating, with a kind of gothic flair that makes it look like it’s been around for hundreds of years.

Nightlife and Entertainment

Nightlife in Madrid is booming, and you can find everything from a flamenco club to massive electronic music raves.

Fabrik – If you’re looking for said rave, head to Fabrik. This two-floor club has a whopping 7,000-person capacity and a beautiful sound system to accommodate their world-famous DJs. Kapital is located in El Centro, and is legendary throughout all of Europe. The enormous club features 7 floors – each with a different theme. Goya Social Club is a nice alternative if you aren’t ready for 7 floors of partying. It has a capacity of just 200 people, though the more intimate environment is perfect for its house, deep house, tech house, and sometimes techno artists.

Get out of your comfort zone and into a tablao , or flamenco bar. Here, you can see or even participate in dancing flamenco while enjoying some delicious eats and fine drinks. Corral de la Moreria is our top pick, and is one of the oldest tablaos around. Torres Bermejas is another hot choice, with their traditional cuisine and famous flamenco.

For innovative cocktails, look no further than Salmon Guru . It has an interesting name, but even more interesting drinks. The neon décor is very flashy and fun for taking photos. Diego Cabrera owns this one along with Viva Madrid : another one of our favorites. Viva Madrid has an almost opposite take on Salmon Guru, being a historic tavern with classic cocktails. Varsovia Cocktail & Bar is charming, and one of the top picks for a good vermouth and tapas.

No matter where you go in Madrid, you’ll likely be able to find many pretty, outdoor bars and cafes, karaoke bars, and live music.

While many people may think that Madrid is constantly warm, this is not the case at all. Their summers are typically pretty short, hot (around 99 degrees Fahrenheit), and dry. This is great if you aren’t a fan of humidity. However, the wintertime can get very cold and cloudy, dipping down to 23 degrees Fahrenheit at times! Try visiting from late June to late August for the best weather – just remember that most other European countries also have vacation from school at this time and things can get crowded.

Attractions

If you enjoy Mother Nature and serene little getaways, you’ll love Buen Retiro Park and the Crystal Palace. El Parque del Retiro is filled with lush flora, and is preened and maintained wonderfully. Covering over 140 hectares, it will originally made for the Count Duke of Olivares back in the 17 th century! El Palacio de Cristal consists of cast iron and glass, and sits in front of a flowing fountain and reflecting pool. Parques and fountains are plentiful in Madrid however, so you can really take your pick.

Aside from the Prado Museum , Madrid has many other architectural stunners like the Royal Palace and Gardens. Drawing many similarities to Paris Versailles, this palace is still used as the official residence of the king of Spain. Here, you can also catch some artwork by Velazquez, Goya, El Greco, and the rest of the crew. However, all kinds of palaces and interesting architecture covers Madrid.

If you’re a history buff, you have to head over to Puerta del Sol, which is where the old city gate stood. It’s been the center of many important events throughout history, such as the Spanish resistance to Napoleon back in the early 1800’s, and in 1931 when the Second Republic was proclaimed! Today, it has all kinds of fun shops and trendy cafes. If you like wine then be sure to do a wine tasting tour while you are in Madrid .

Once you arrive to your destination, try and walk as much as you can (within reason). Obviously, this is counting on your area being safe to walk around, which all of the neighborhoods we’ve mentioned are. This is the best way to get a feel for the city, and you can see everything up close. Plus, if you ever get tired, Madrid has an excellent public transportation system to help you out.

Try to at least learn Spanish basics. There are tons of great channels on YouTube, and Duolingo is a handy little app to have. If you practice just a few weeks before you go, you should at least be able to speak what’s required.

Make sure to check the restaurants’ meal times, as Spanish meal times are quite a bit different from ours. Lunch usually starts around 2pm, and dinner is served around 9, which is pretty late by most of our standards.

2024 Masters: Jon Rahm's Champions Dinner menu includes 'Mama Rahm's Classic Lentil Stew' among other tapas

The 2023 masters winner unveiled his menu for the dinner to be held on tuesday during tournament week.

jon-rahm-2023-masters-g.jpg

The 2024 Masters is still three weeks away, but preparations for tournament festivities are in full swing. On Tuesday, 2023 Masters champion Jon Rahm unveiled his Champions Dinner menu that features an array of tasty bites for past champions to indulge as they enjoy their week at Augusta National.

In addition to curating the menu and making sure the wine selection is up to par, Rahm will also be responsible for giving a speech in front of the likes of Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus. Rahm told media Tuesday that the speech is, "living rent free in my head," and he hopes a couple glasses of wine will come to his aid.

Rahm's menu is decidedly different from the simplistic approach taken by 2022 Masters champion Scottie Scheffler last year. The world No. 3 chose to pay homage to his Spanish roots, and the selections are indicative of this mission.

Let's take a look at what will be served.

Tapas y Pintxos

  • Ibéricos — Acorn-fed Iberian Ham Cured Pork Loin
  • Idiázabal con Trufa Negra — Idiázabal Cheese, Black Truffle
  • Tortilla de Patatas — Spanish Omelette, Onions, Confit Potatoes
  • Chistorra con Patata — Spicy Basque Chorizo, Potato
  • Lentejas Estofadas — Mama Rahm's Classic Lentil Stew
  • Croqueta de Pollo — Creamy Chicken Fritters Confit Potatoes

First Course

  • Ensalada de Txangurro — Basque Crab Salad, Potato

Main Course

  • Chuletón a la Parrilla — Basque Ribeye, Tudela Lettuce, Piquillo Peppers
  • Rodaballo al Pil-Pil — Turbot, Navarra White Asparagus
  • Milhojas de Crema y Nata — Puff Pastry Cake, Custard & Chantilly Cream

Players like Woods, Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson, Nick Faldo, Ben Crenshaw, Jose Maria Olazabal, Adam Scott, Jordan Spieth, Hideki Matsuyama, Scheffler and many others will attend the festivities. Last year's dinner was originally thought to be more contentious than in past years given the presence of players who defected to LIV Golf such as Mickelson and Dustin Johnson, but those concerns were quickly squashed.

Rahm will return to Augusta National this year not only as the defending champion but also as a LIV member after making the switch from the PGA Tour this offseason. The game's division, while front of mind for many players and fans alike, will take a backseat for at least this one night as some of the best to ever do it celebrate the man who did it the best at Augusta National in 2023.

Day 1: Hanoi – Nam Cang Village – Topas Riverside Lodge

Day 2: Topas Riverside Lodge – Topas Ecolodge

Day 3: Topas Ecolodge – Hanoi

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: from red river delta to the remote topas riverside lodge (-,l,-).

Between 6:30 – 7:00 AM, the Topas Mountain Express will pick you up from your hotel in Hanoi before departing for the mountains. The journey to Thanh Phu Bridge will take nearly five hours, from here you will transfer by minivan to the nearby Nam Cang village. To reach the Riverside Lodge, you will walk through the village and cross a private bridge. After settling into your private room at the Lodge you will be served a delicious lunch of fresh local cuisine.

The afternoon is set aside for visiting the Red Dao minority village. Nam Cang is located in the most remote area of Sapa and the Red Dao women wear some of the most colorful and diverse attire of all Vietnam’s ethnic groups. The Red Dao people are highly skilled in herbal bath preparation, embroidery, paper making and silversmithing. Your guide will take you to explore the village and learn how the villagers make writing paper, silver jewelry and embroidery, as well as about their use of herbal medicines.

Back at the Lodge, you’ll have time to relax and take a dip in the river.

Approximate grade: Easy/ 2 hours walking.

Optional add on: Join a local woman and pick your own mixture of herbs before spending a relaxing evening in a special traditional bath based on your blend. This must be pre-booked and paid directly to the lady.

Day 2: River and jungle walk. Transfer to Topas Ecolodge (B,L,-)

Make your way through the quiet lanes of Nam Cang Village towards a dirt road framed by bamboo forests and views of the rice paddies in the valley below. Here you can simply take the time to rest your feet in the cool, rushing river and enjoy the surroundings, or cross make-shift suspension bridges to explore further. You’ll then hike back to Topas Riverside Lodge to feast on a sumptuous Sapa-inspired BBQ lunch of freshly smoked trout, vegetables, tofu and mushrooms straight from the grill served with freshly picked herbs.

After lunch, you’ll have time to relax on the riverbank in front of the lodge before catching the bus to Topas Ecolodge at 2.15pm.

At the Ecolodge, check-in to your bungalow with a soothing cup of lemongrass and ginger tea while taking in the stunning views from the reception area floor-to-ceiling windows.

Approximate grade: Easy/ 2.5 – 3 hours walking.

Day 3: Topas Ecolodge to the capital  (B,-,-)

The morning can be spent at your leisure at Topas Ecolodge, whether relaxing and enjoying the facilities at the Lodge or borrowing our high-quality mountain bikes and exploring the surrounding area. Other options include taking a scheduled shuttle bus to Sapa to visit the town, a half-day tour to reach the highest peak of Indochina, Mt. Fansipan (3.143m) by cable car or indulging in a treatment in our hilltop spa.

At 2:30pm, the Topas Mountain Express will depart from Topas Ecolodge and take you back to your hotel in Hanoi.

Opinion What green jacket? A better Masters tradition would be a Losers Dinner.

topas tour

You can take all your azaleas and your green jackets and stuff them in your peach cobbler. The best Masters tradition is the annual Tuesday Night Losers Dinner.

Held every year at Tammy’s Diner & Nail Emporium off I-20 in Augusta, the Tuesday Night Losers Dinner looks like a convention of men whose dogs just got run over. All of these guys had their Masters won, had the size 42L practically halfway off the hanger and then … blew it, never to recover.

Everybody who was almost somebody shows up.

Sitting at the corner table with a bottle of Pepto Bismol and a spoon will be Ed Sneed, who, in 1979 , had a three-shot lead Sunday with three to play and somehow lost to a guy named Fuzzy. Sneed gave up the game six years later.

At the Sad Supper head table will be Scott Hoch . In 1989, in a playoff with Nick Faldo, he missed a two-foot par putt — that’s shorter than some spaghetti noodles Tammy dishes up — that would’ve given him the green jacket. It’s because of Hoch that all the meat at the annual Losers Dinner is cut into tiny pieces, to prevent choking.

Tammy goes all-out for the Losers Dinner. She got it sponsored by Avis, serves only Pepsi (no Coke) and hangs portraits of Al Gore on all the walls.

topas tour

This is the night we honor all the great players who checked in to Augusta’s Heartbreak Hotel and never left: Johnny Miller , Lee Trevino and the late Tom Weiskopf , who finished second a record four times without eventually winning one. That’s why, every year, toward the end of the meal, Tammy comes out of the kitchen in her greasy apron and yells, “Who wants seconds?” And everybody yells “Weiskopf!”

The only humor is gallows humor at the Losers Dinner. For instance, Jeff Maggert is always there. He’s the American who, in 2003, had the Masters lead until he hit a fairway bunker shot that caught the lip, ricocheted back and hit him in the chest, on his way to a triple bogey 7. At the dinner the following year, every player at Maggert’s table quietly sat down wearing a baseball catcher’s chest protector. And mask.

No Tuesday Night Losers Dinner would be complete without Greg Norman, who came into Augusta every year like a shark and got swallowed like a goldfish. Four times, Norman had a chance to win and lost them all: Once, by swiping his 72nd hole 4-iron into the crowd to give Jack Nicklaus the greatest victory of his life; once, to Larry Mize’s preposterous playoff chip-in on a double-diamond slope at the 11th hole; once by performing his bogey-the-72nd-hole trick to hand the win to Faldo; and once, by blowing a six-shot Saturday night lead .

On that awful Sunday in 1996 — April 14, the 84th anniversary of the Titanic hitting the iceberg — Norman hit into a creek on 12 and a pond on 16 , which is why there’s a standing tradition with the busboys at Losers Night. Norman gets no more water.

It’s never lost on the downturn diners that golf legends such as Rory McIlroy, Tom Kite and Davis Love III ( 64 PGA Tour wins among them) will be eating Tammy’s Runner-Up Rabbit Stew on Tuesday, while people like Mize , Danny Willett and Tommy Aaron (six PGAs among them) will be enjoying a champions dinner of tapas y pintxos from a menu selected by Spaniard Jon Rahm , the 2023 Masters winner. It’s in the Augusta National dining room, no charge.

Tell it to Ernie Els, who had plenty of chances ripped up right in front of him. In 2004, he was on the practice green getting ready for the playoff when Phil Mickelson sunk his 18-footer to win. Suffice it to say, Els did not jump for joy.

Tell it to David Duval who finished in the top six four times but never closed the sale. In 1998, he was sitting pretty in Jones Cabin with a snappy 67, getting ready for the playoff with Mark O’Meara, who was staring at a tricky 20-footer. Augusta National Chairman Jack Stephens leaned over to Duval and said , “Don’t worry, David. Nobody ever makes this putt.” O’Meara made the putt.

And definitely tell it to Brooks Koepka , who will host Tammy’s Losers this year as the player who coughed up the title the year before. He had a four-stroke lead Saturday night and a migraine Sunday night after shooting a 75 and falling to Rahm. Koepka has picked a menu honoring how he played that day — pork shanks and fried eggs , followed by a dessert of bitter melon slices.

I can already predict somebody will go up to Koepka, slap him on the back and say, “Brooksie, do you realize that if the LIV Tour had caught on, you’d be Masters champion right now?”

And Koepka will turn and say, “Whaddya mean?”

“Because,” the guy will say, “ they play only 54 holes.”

Cut line: pga tour on the upswing upon leaving florida.

  • Rex Hoggard ,
  • Rex Hoggard

In this edition, we recap the highs and lows of the Florida swing.

Star power . Sure, Scottie Scheffler did Scottie Scheffler things, but the marquee had more than just the world No. 1.

Although Scheffler lapped the field at the Arnold Palmer Invitational by five strokes, the brilliance of his performance was compelling. For the week, he picked up five shots on the field off the tee, more than three shots with his iron play, nearly four shots with his short game and a stunning 4.3 shots in strokes gained: putting.

If his play at Bay Hill didn’t impress, at last week’s Players Championship he was just as proficient despite a neck injury that clearly slowed him on Friday and Saturday.

“Once his neck locked up on [No.] 12 [on Friday], I even told my own wife, I said, ‘I don’t know if he can even finish this tournament.’ I mean it was kind of miraculous he could even get it around,” Ted Scott, Scheffler’s caddie, said. “It just shows you what tenacity, resilience, whatever fancy word you want to use, that describes Scottie Scheffler.”

That Sunday’s final leaderboard also included five of the top 10 players in the world and three players – Xander Schauffele, Brian Harman and Wyndham Clark – vying for the title until the last hole, is a testament to a product that struggled to deliver on the West Coast.

Spanish cuisine . Every Champions Dinner at the Masters is special and the game’s most exclusive soiree is a ticket any fan would covet, but Jon Rahm’s menu for this year’s gathering is next level.

The Masters - Final Round

Rahm predictably went with a Spanish-themed menu, including tapas or pintxos of acorn-fed Iberian ham, spicy Basque chorizo, Idiazabal cheese with black truffle, creamy chicken fritters with confit potatoes, a Spanish omelet with confit potatoes and “Mama Rahm’s classic lentil stew.”

The first course will be a Basque crab and potato salad and the two choices for the main course are a Basque ribeye with Piquillo peppers and turbot, a white flatfish, with white asparagus.

You can’t win the Masters on Tuesday night, but Rahm easily won the culinary championship with a truly unique menu.

Made Cut-Did Not Finish (MDF)

Progress . In purely commercial terms, it appears to have been a productive week for the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund as the two sides continue to hash out a potential deal to reunite golf.

The PGA Tour Enterprises’ six player directors – Tiger Woods, Patrick Cantlay, Jordan Spieth, Adam Scott, Peter Malnati and Webb Simpson – met with the fund’s governor, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, on Monday in the Bahamas.

GOLF: DEC 15 PGA - Presidents Cup

By all accounts, the meeting was productive and allowed the player directors to better understand the fund’s interest in golf -- how the two sides, along with LIV Golf, could possibly work together under one corporate umbrella. None of the player directors had met with any representatives from the PIF, and Monday’s meeting signaled, at the least, that the negotiations have intensified enough to bring the players into the loop. But a deal still doesn’t seem imminent.

“I do think it’s a while until we get there,” Simpson told SI.com Wednesday. “I didn’t walk away with a much clearer understanding of what the future holds. But I definitely walked away thinking, I’m glad we did that. Glad we met him. Glad we had a very friendly meeting. It was never tense. It was a long day but a good day.”

Any potential deal with the PIF will ultimately be decided by the six player directors, along with the other members of the board of directors, so consider Monday’s meeting the, “Hello, my name is …” portion of the proceedings.

Early math . The Tour is just entering major championship season, but for some of the game’s biggest stars, the FedExCup math is starting to feel uncomfortable.

Last week, Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said the “churn” rate – the number of players who drop out and into the top 50 each season – is on pace to match projections, with about 40 percent or 20 players currently set to drop out of the top 50.

Twelve events into a 36-tournament season, which is about 36 percent, and some of the biggest names are outside the top 50, which is used to fill fields at the signature events. That includes Rory McIlroy (No. 58), Tony Finau (No. 55), Tommy Fleetwood (No. 69), Viktor Hovland (No. 70) and Tom Kim (84).

There’s plenty of time to make up ground but as players are learning, the Tour’s new signature-event math can catch up with you very quickly.

Have/Have Nots . While the Florida swing produced compelling finishes at TPC Sawgrass and Bay Hill, the Tour’s new signature-event model cut a clear path between the haves and have nots.

Using the world ranking, and all its inherent flaws and weaknesses, The Players and the Arnold Palmer Invitational produced two of the year’s deepest fields, awarding 80 and 67 points to the winners, respectively.

By comparison, the Cognizant Classic awarded 50 points to its champion, Austin Eckroat, and the winner of this week’s Valspar Championship is also projected to earn 50 points. Neither are season lows for non-signature events, but it is a clear indication of how the circuit’s new tier system will impact fields.
