Hokkaido Tours     View Tours

Hokkaido tours.

Hokkaido attracts visitors from all over the globe for its pristine natural scenery and snow festivals which are held annually. Hokkaido is the northernmost island of Japan and is also the home to populations of rare species like the red-crowned crane. Hokkaido is the second largest island of the four main islands but has the least developed land. Because it has been able to maintain much of its natural environment, many types of flowers have been allowed to flourish during the warmer months of the year. There broad colors of seasonal flowers attract many travelers throughout the year. Japanese Cherry Blossoms bloom throughout the country from early March to early May with Hokkaido blooming on the late end of the spectrum. Another popular Hokkaido flower is the shibazakura, which has a sensational pink color that spreads out like blankets on the ground, causing it to look like a sea of flowers that wave a spectrum of strong pink. In the summer, lavender viewing is one of the top attractions in Hokkaido. Both public and private lavender fields extend along Furano City, wrapping around the whole hillside that turns into a mass of violet in the peak season from mid-to late July. For those interested in combining their wanderlust with snow festivals, Sapporo has one of the most popular snow festivals in Japan. The Sapporo snow festival takes places annually during the first week of February. Competitions take place during the beginning of the festivities; ice sculptures, mazes, and other icy creations are built for the public to view. Some artists create historical, architectural, or cultural-based sculptures amongst many other types of themes creating a variety of entertainment for everyone. Besides Sapporo’s snow festival, there are also romantic, picturesque sites like the Otaru Canal located just west of Sapporo. The Otaru Canal is especially scenic during the night, especially during winter when path is lit by lanterns made of snow alongside the canal. The water reflects the lit candles, complementing each other and creating a peaceful scene. Please see below for tours that include Hokkaido:

Best of Hokkaido

The Best of Hokkaido tour focuses on the northernmost of the main islands, Japan’s last frontier. Hokkaido is a natural wonderland of mountain ranges, deep caldera lakes, active volcanoes, numerous thermally-heated mineral springs and virgin forests. The attitudes of the inhabitants are akin to those of the pioneers of the American West, but still unmistakably Japanese.

Day 9 Travel to Iozan (Sulpher Mountain), Lake Masshu, Akan Crane Center and Kushiro

After breakfast, we will travel to Iozan (Sulpher Mountain). As soon as we arrive, you will discover how it got it’s name. Next we will travel to Lake Masshu, considered by many to be one of Japan’s most beautiful lakes because of its clear, deep blue water. But the lake is shy, and is often shrouded by fog. After Lake Masshu, we will travel to the Akan Crane Center. It was once thought the cranes were extinct. However, about 50 years ago, a few cranes were found, and extensive efforts were made to bring them back from the brink of extinction. While much work remains to be done, the crane population has stabilized and is even growing. Because of the location, Kushiro is considered one of the best ports in Japan for seafood. In the evening, we will enjoy dinner at one of the many seafood restaurants in Kushiro. You will prepare your overnight bag with enough items for 2 days and 1 night. Buffet breakfast and dinner at a local restaurant are included.

Buffet-style breakfast and dinner at the ryokan included.

Day 12 Travel to Lake Toya; Lake Toya - Showa Shinzan, Usuzan, Toya Volcano Museum

Before leaving Noboribetsu you will prepare your luggage to transfer to Tokyo and will travel with an overnight bag only. You will prepare your overnight bag with enough items for 3 days and 2 nights. We travel to Lake Toya, one of the largest and deepest volcanic caldera lakes in Japan. After checking in to the ryokan, we will visit Usu-zan and Showa-shin-zan, both active volcanoes located at Lake Toya. We will take a cable car to the top of Usu-zan, which last erupted in 2000. Here you can walk to the rim of the volcano through the barren, moon-like landscape. Afterwards, we visit Showa-shin-zan. In 1944, a surprised wheat farmer found Showa-shin-zan growing out of his field instead of wheat, and it has been growing larger ever since then. We will also visit the nearby Lake Toya Volcanic Museum. Amazingly, when Usu-zan last erupted in 2000, no one was killed. But there was a lot of damage from the eruption, and much of it is preserved at the museum and illustrates the sheer power of geothermal activity and documents the volcano’s turbulent history. Buffet style breakfast and dinner at the ryokan included.

Day 13 Travel to Hakodate; Hakodate - Goryokaku Fort, Motomachi District, Mt. Hakodate Ropeway

After breakfast, we travel to Hakodate. Hakodate was one of the first cities in Japan open to foreigners after the Meiji Restoration. After arriving in Hakodate, we will visit the Goryo-Kaku, Japan’s first western-style fort. Built in 1864 by the Tokugawa Shogunate in the shape of a five-pointed star, it was designed to trap attackers in a deadly crossfire. We will go to top of the Goryo-kaku tower next door to the fort, providing a view of the fort and the surrounding city. We will also visit the Moto-machi historic area. Overlooking the western bay at the foot of Mount Hakodate, there are numerous sloping streets lined with 19th century churches, consulates, shops and homes of the foreigners who first opened this area of Japan to commerce. In the evening, we take a cable car to the top of Mt. Hakodate, where we will enjoy a panoramic view of Hakodate’s night lights. Breakfast at the ryokan and lunch at a local restaurant included.

Travel: 3 Hours; Walking: Medium

Day 14 Hakodate - Hakodate Morning Market; Travel to Tokyo

In the morning, we visit the Hakodate Morning Market, where the sellers can prepare the specialties of Hakodate (crab, sea urchin and squid) fresh from their stalls for breakfast. We had a great time and wonderful experiences. Like most other trips we took, we learned a lot of the local cultures and the unique geography and beautiful nature of the places. We also got to experience the different types of transportation in this trip, including car, bus, and train rides. The pace was good too. I only wish that I could speak some Japanese to enjoy more!

The steaming fumaroles in Noboribetsu Hell Valley in winter.

Shikotsu–Toya 6 Day Winter Hiking Tour

Explore a land of ice and fire as we make our way through the snow-capped volcanoes of Shikotsu–Toya National Park. As well as the spectacular views, you can enjoy learning all about the indigenous Ainu and Hokkaido’s fascinating wildlife.

What makes Hokkaido’s winter special?

Every winter, cold winds from Siberia pick up moisture as they cross the Sea of Japan before dropping it as snow on Hokkaido. The snow falls as big, light snowflakes, the kind you see in the movies, blanketing the landscape in white. With the thick bush buried, we are free to explore the forests and mountains, with access to areas that may be more challenging or even completely out of our reach in summer. Hike in the snow, and you will feel like you are in a private snow globe; the sense of stillness and solitude is hard to describe without experiencing it for yourself.

The Wildlife

While Brown Bears are tucked away in hibernation, many other animals are active throughout winter. Mountain Hares, Red Foxes and Japanese Deer leave a network of footprints behind as they search for food. Red-crowned Cranes perform mating dances in the fields, and giant Steller's Sea Eagles arrive from Siberia. Seeing the animals against a stark white background is a striking winter image.

Hot Springs & Warm Welcomes

It may be cold outside but step into one of Hokkaido's many cosy restaurants or lodges, and you are greeted with a warm local welcome. Tuck into a bowl of world-famous Hokkaido ramen or a local hot pot. Later, slip into a steaming hot spring to warm up your body and soothe your tired muscles. For a truly unique winter experience, brave the dash through the snow to the “rotenburo” outdoor pool.
