Frequently asked questions
How does it work without cell signal.
Our app uses GPS co-ordinates to determine your location and play commentary, not cellular or wifi signal.
Just pre-download both the app and tour content (audio, maps and images) to your phone, well before you leave signal, so you’ll have everything ready to tour offline.
And as there’s no time limit to use the tours, you can preview the tour routes, major highlights, itineraries and other travel tips as part of your trip planning.

We used Shaka for both Oahu and the Big Islsnd and both were entertaining and informative.
Invaluable for road to Hana
The guide is GPS triggered and gives commentary on things to do, see, and history. Extremely informative and entertaining. Made the trip much more interesting.
Chuck The Legend
Chuck (the appointed name for our tour guide) was great, guiding us through with great advice, funny jokes, and history lessons. By the end of our 13 hour journey, we felt like Chuck joined our family.
Shaka Guide on Maui
We did The Road to Hana tour with Shaka and it did not disappoint! Helpful tips, on time cues, and overall just super useful information for the trip. Definitely recommend getting this one!
I honestly can’t believe how good this guide was! Went to the Big Island and we don’t know what we would have done without it!!!!! Will miss Shaka Guide almost as much as Hawaii! Such great history, guide, information, music and humor. Think I will plan all of my next vacations off of what Shaka Guides are available!!!!! :) Game changer! Thank you
Love this App
Did the reverse road to Hana today and the tour was great. Would unpause if I forgot as GPS picked up where we were. Had great stop suggestions and worked better than expected. Commentary and music was fantastic. So worth the money.
Road to Hana
Best app I've purchased. Better than group tours. You can pick and choose areas you want to explore more and pace in your own time. Never boring, lots of humor and very informative.
Waterfall tour
We had a wonderful time on this tour. You can tailor it to your own pace and activity level. The "tour guide" was informative and entertaining. We decided to purchase the entire package option. Highly recommend!

Just Ahead audio guides are written by expert authors and narrated by professionals. You simply drive, while Just Ahead informs and entertains you.
GPS-guided tour
As you drive in your car or travel by train or bus, Just Ahead takes you on a guided tour. It uses GPS to know exactly where you are and what to say. Imagine you’re cresting a hill and in front of you is a beautiful sight. You’re wondering what it is. That’s when Just Ahead shares with you an exciting story about what you’re looking at.
Works offline
Many of the most beautiful places in the world don’t have mobile phone service. Just Ahead is designed to work wherever you are, even without WiFi or a cell signal. Just be sure to download your guide before you go on your trip.
Built-in maps
Don’t you hate it when you try to use the maps on your smartphone and they don’t work because there’s no mobile phone service? No worries. Each Just Ahead guide comes bundled with an offline version of the maps you need, even without Internet access.
Great stories
Just Ahead guides are written by expert authors and filled with fascinating stories of history, geology, and wildlife. You can’t read and drive. It’s crazy, illegal, and will probably make you sick. Let us guide and inform you as you drive.
Suggested directions
Just Ahead can also help you avoid getting lost by suggesting directions. Just Ahead tells you why you should turn or not, what you should do after a turn, and recommends the best direction to take if there are multiple route options. It’s like having a professional tour guide in the car with you.
Trip-planning resources
Every time we go on a trip, we stress out about when to go, where to stay, what to see, etc. Wouldn’t it be great if you had someone with you who had been on that exact trip countless times? Sharing tips and tricks before you even leave your house? Just Ahead does exactly that.
We get you there and back
Just Ahead tells you everything you need to know about your destination. But we also know that there are a lot of miles between home and the park, or between this park and the next. That’s why we cover all the common routes to and from your destination. No matter which route you choose, we’re with you, telling you stories along the way.
Where next?
We at Just Ahead are working to build the most comprehensive series of audio guides for the whole world. Wherever you’re traveling, we want to be there.

The Best Way to See a City? Audio Guides
While nothing screams “tourist” like a guidebook, nothing says “local” like a pair of headphones.
By Emily Singer
Consider the tourist. The oft-stigmatized identity is more a temporary mindset than it is a permanent condition, assumed with the intent of experiencing foreign cultures and ideas. Yet while many strive to discover something new when traveling, few desire to be flagged as an outsider. The easiest way to adopt the guise of a local is to don the one accessory that pervades every major city across the globe and grants instant insouciance: headphones .
Because while nothing screams “tourist” like a guidebook , nothing says “local” like a pair of earbuds — and no one has to know that it’s a pre-recorded tour, not music, flowing through them. Better yet, today’s most worthwhile tours are more akin to conversations than dry textbook excerpts, laden with insider tips and personal narratives that take you off the main square and down streets where only a local would know to go. Here are four worth plugging in to.

Tour Guide System FAQs
A tour guide system is a wireless audio communication system used to communicate with an entire group simultaneously. It typically consists of a headset with a microphone and transmitter for the presenter (although handheld microphones can sometimes be used). Tour guests have headsets with receivers that allow them to hear the presenter loud and clear, even in noisy environments.
A tour guide speaks into a microphone to transmit their message wirelessly to a tour group. Guests wear earphones or headphones to hear the message. Some systems allow for interactive two-way communication with the touch of a button while others only allow the presenter to speak. Batteries are charged in a charging station and last for long periods of time.
Guided tours are conducted in a variety of settings, including manufacturing facilities, museums, historical sites, cruise ships, exhibit halls, demonstrations, college campuses, trade shows and much more. They can even be used for training, silent sessions and daily walkthroughs.
Learn more >
Yes. In particular, our ListenTALK system can be configured to accommodate language interpreters to listen to a presenter on one channel and communicate to international guests on another, helping encourage a diverse and inclusive tour experience.
A customized demo kit typically includes four pre-programmed transceivers with headset mics and accessories. Some tour planners, however, will rent a full system with multiple units as a test run before they decide to purchase.

Loved the ghost stories.
Amazingly Entertaining
It’s hard to describe how engaging and entertaining this tour is. It is like the spirit of Hollywood encapsulated in a short walking adventure. Highly recommend to anyone visiting the walk of fame, and / or those looking to learn more about old Hollywood.
Loved the tour. It was an easy walk and the music and narrators made it fun.
“Best buy for the money. I took the tour half way in two leisurely days. Perfect.”
Along the way I wished there was more historic details. But then when finished I appreciated the fact that too much info would have bogged down the overall experience. The tour kept me moving along to more and more fascinating locations.
Great walking tour
Thanks you for putting this tour together. It was very informative and kept us interested with all the added music and voice overs. We liked being able to tour at our own pace.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS A TOUR GUIDE SYSTEM (WHISPER SYSTEM)? A tourguide system is a device composed of a wireless transmitter with a microphone which is used by the guide or speaker and a set of wireless receivers and headphones that are worn by visitors. The wireless receivers allow them to listen to the guide's explanations continuously throughout the tour. The aim of a tourguide system is for the visitors to be able to hear the guide clearly without being close to him/her. They are highly recommended for groups bigger than 10 and essential for even larger groups. Note: Tour guide systems are an alternative solution to audio guide players which are used by those who wish to take a tour independently without the presence of a guide. Visit the audio guides page to learn more. audioguides
WHY USE A TOURGUIDE SYSTEM ? Tour guide systems allow the user to easily hear the guide at a constant volume without having to worry about how far away the guide is. This ease of use during the tour improves listening attention and, as a consequence, significantly enhances the overall quality of the tour. Users who are given tour guide systems, also called whisper systems, tend to value their visit more highly.
TECHNOLOGY ANALOG OR DIGITAL TRANSMISSION Tour guide systems or whisper systems were analog until the early 2000s. The appearance of digital transmission in tourguide systems brought about significant improvements: - The audio volume in the receivers increased. - The coverage range increased to become greater than 100 meters. - The background noise or crackling that was constantly present in the recipient's receiver disappeared, even when the guide isn’t speaking. - Interference or clicks reduced significantly, only appearing when the receiver is about to leave the coverage area. - The maximum number of groups that could be in an area without interference went from two to 20. - Battery consumption reduced significantly, increasing the usage time between charges. Analogue and digital transmission equipment still coexist in the market. The main advantage of an analog system is its low price point.
Analog transmission whisper system
Digital transmission whisper system
TOURGUIDE SYSTEM 2.4G In the last two years, a digital technology variant called 2.4G has entered the tour guide systems market which uses the 2.4Ghz frequency band. It’s cheaper than digital transmission because it uses the same technology as 2.4G wifi routers. However, it has the same range as 2.4G wifi devices, which is around 50 meters at best. In practice, this range is insufficient for a whisper system.
BATTERIES Currently, only two types of batteries are used in Tour guide systems: Lithium or lithium polymer batteries. These are the best options. Primary advantages include a low weight, a small size, fast charging and a large capacity. However, its price and the need for an intelligent charging system must be considered. Nickel-metal-hydride batteries (NI-MH) are the same AA and AAA rechargeable batteries found in conventional remote controls. These were the preferred option before the arrival of lithium batteries. The biggest drawback when used in tourguide systems is their weight which is uncomfortable for the users because the tour guide device must constantly hang from their neck. Their most significant advantage is a lower cost.
HOW TO USE A WHISPER SYSTEM The group guide or speaker must carry the transmitting equipment and microphone while each listener must carry a receiver with a headset or headphones. The devices are small in size and should be worn around the neck to ensure reliable coverage. Carrying the transmitter or receiver in a pocket is not recommended because it could reduce the range. All transmitters and receivers of a group must be tuned to the same frequency channel. Numerous frequency channels are available. GROUP SIZE There is no limit to the number of tourguide receivers in a group. For listeners to clearly hear the guide's explanations, they only need to be within the coverage area or range of the transmitter. The receivers do not interfere with one another. NUMBER OF TRANSMITTERS There can only be one transmitter at a time in each group. There may be several speakers with a transmitter in the same group, but they must coordinate among themselves so as not to have two active simultaneous transmitters in the same group. NUMBER OF GROUPS When using digital transmission equipment, there may be several groups in the same area or room (up to a maximum of 20 digital transmission groups). For this to work, each group must be on a different frequency channel. Note: If using analog transmission equipment, there can only be two groups in the same area. It is not possible to add a third analog group in the same area, even if it is in another channel. This is a limitation of the analog system.
RANGE A quality guided tour system (Tour guide system) should allow the receivers to hear the guide comments while being at a distance of at least 100 meters. A range below 100 meters does not offer a large enough coverage area.
TYPES OF MICROPHONES The tour guide transmitter can use different microphones. Three types are typically used: Headset or head microphones: The microphone includes a headband to adjust onto the guide’s head. The microphone is very close to the mouth, approximately 2-3 centimeters away. The guide uses this microphone when in motion. It is also highly recommended for noisy environments. Having the microphone so close to the mouth effectively captures the voice while the ambient background noise is lower. The microphone cap, which is hidden by foam, is L-shaped and directive. The short side of the L should point towards the mouth. Neck or tie microphones: The microphone has a clip which snaps onto the neck of the shirt, not far from the throat. This microphone is used when the speaker is standing still or sitting down. It should not be used when the speaker is in motion or a noisy environment. The tie microphone will always have a volume lower than the headset. Pencil microphone: The microphone resembles a pencil. When connected to the transmitter, the set is used as a standard handheld microphone. This solution works wonderfully when several speakers are sharing the microphone because it is easy to pass between presenters.

TYPES OF HEADPHONES Visitors can use different types of headphones with a tour guide receiver. Three types are typically used: Monaural earset: These fit on one ear leaving the other ear free. This is the most commonly used type and is effective for guided tours in enclosed and open spaces. In urban areas with traffic, this is the only model that should be used because it does not distract the user from the environment. Its usage in noisy environments is not recommended. Headphones: These fit over the head thanks to a headband. Audio can be heard through both ears. These are only recommended in noisy environments. They should not be used in areas with traffic because they distract the user from the environment. Disposable earbuds: Only one user should use them because the button-shaped earbud is inserted deep into the auditory pavilion. They cannot be shared because they are not hygienic. The user does not have to return them upon finishing the tour.

Around Review: The Best Place to Take Audio Tours
I love walking tours. The first thing I do when I arrive somewhere is take a walking tour. It’s a great way to get the feel of a new place, see the main sights, and adjust to the local culture. You also get to meet a local expert guide who can answer your questions and give you tips on other spots to check out (I always ask for recommendations for places to eat, for example).
But sometimes the dates and times that walking tours are offered don’t line up with my schedule, especially if I’m only in a place for a few days or if I’m visiting when there is a local holiday. I also like to be spontaneous, and often tours are already filled up for the day or don’t allow last-minute registrations. Plus, I really like going at my own pace when exploring a city, and I don’t always feel like being tied to a tour for three hours.
In the past, this meant I was just out of luck. But today, there’s another option available: self-guided audio tours.
With the prevalence of smartphones, it’s now possible to access guided walking tours from your mobile device, giving you tons of freedom when it comes to taking a walking tour.
I’ve taken audio tours around the world, and they can really run the gamut in terms of quality. Around aims to take the guesswork out of finding quality audio tours by vetting local guides and compiling tours from cities around the world in one place.
In this review of Around, I’ll share everything you need to know about using this new tour marketplace!
Table of Contents
What is Around?
How does around work, pros of using around, cons of using around.
Around is a platform where travelers can find and take self-guided audio walking tours in major cities around the world. Around vets local experts who create and list tours on the website, so you always know that you’re getting a quality tour guide. (Around does not run tours themselves; they rely on local experts.)
Tours generally last 60-90 minutes, though there are longer ones (such as Full Immersion Verona ) lasting upwards of 180 minutes. Keep in mind that the estimated times do not take into account how many times you stop and start (and they certainly don’t account for that delicious pastry break!).
Since tours on Around are created by local experts, there’s a mixture of detailed tours on a particular topic (such as the 19th Century Skyscrapers Tour of Chicago , led by a professional Chicago tour guide who specializes in architecture and design) as well as general overview tours geared towards first-time visitors (like the Berlin Highlights Tour ).
Tours are mainly offered in English, though there are some tours in Spanish and Italian, with the intent of adding more languages soon.
All you need to take an Around walking tour is a smartphone with GPS enabled and an internet connection (no need to download a new app). Rather than the traditional tour model where you pay per tour, with Around, you purchase an all-access pass which lets you take as many tours as you want within a period of time, from 24 hours to 14 days.
This is a great value when you consider that taking one walking tour is normally around $5-20 USD, and for most cities on Around, there are at least three tours currently offered. If you’re visiting a place for a weekend, the three-day pass is perfect, as you can take all the tours you want for just $14.99 USD. Purchases on Around can be made in five main currencies (USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD) to avoid exchange rate fees.
If you’re more of a slow traveler and staying somewhere longer, or are visiting a few different cities on one trip, there are one-week and two-week passes too.
Once you purchase a pass, you’ll unlock all Around’s available tours for that period of time. As the company started in Italy , you’ll see the most cities represented there:
You’ll also find tours in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and throughout Europe, with new cities being added all the time. In fact, since I started writing this post, new cities have been added!
On each tour page, you’ll see helpful information including the duration, recommended starting point, information about the expert guide, a map of the stops, and a short description of what the tour is about:
I really like how you can listen to a 30-second preview of the tour. That way, you can quickly get a feel for the guide before you decide to embark on a longer audio adventure with them.
Each tour page also displays some of the highlights in visual form, which is super helpful for knowing whether the tour covers main city landmarks that you might not want to miss:
While tours all come with a recommended starting point, you can start at any location on the tour. Upon starting, you’ll follow the route, guided by your map and the voice of your guide. Once you reach an appointed stop on the tour, an orange button pops up. Hit the button to listen to the guide’s expertise at the stop.
You can pause and replay each stop as many times as you like, which is handy in busy cities that might be loud or otherwise distracting.
In fact, while you’re in the city where the tour takes place, you can play each stop’s audio whenever you like. This is not only helpful if you’re using an older device that might struggle with precise GPS (so it might not recognize if you’re standing at an audio stop), but if you didn’t have time to finish the tour while walking around, you can still learn the information while relaxing in your hotel or hostel later.
And as long as your access pass remains valid, you can take the whole tour again if you really want to!
Around takes the guesswork out of finding quality audio walking tours, and there’s a lot to like about this newcomer on the tour company scene.
I especially liked how, with Around, you can:
- Take expertly guided walking tours at any hour of the day
- Stop, start, replay, and come back to tours on a truly self-paced tour experience
- Enjoy as many tours as you want for one price, with their unlimited access pass
Around is still in development, meaning that they’re still working out the kinks. While they’re off to a great start, here are some places I’d love to see them improve upon:
- More cities offered (which is something they’re actively working on)
- Downloadable tours as you currently need an internet connection to take tours, which is something you may not have when you’re traveling
- Short bios of the guides to highlight their background and expertise (most are professionally licensed guides)
Around is a cool, affordable platform with lots of potential. While there are a lot of companies offering walking tours these days, there still isn’t a lot of focus on audio tours. It’d be great to have a go-to place to find curated expert-led audio tours around the world. I’m looking forward to seeing them flesh out some of the features and add more cities too. If you’re somewhere that Around offers tours, definitely check them out!

Tour Guide System Showdown: Comparing the features of SmartGuide and VoiceMap
Digital tour guide systems are becoming increasingly popular among visitors. This pushes tourist destinations and attractions to innovate and implement digital guides. But with so many options available, it can be difficult to decide which tour guide system is best suited for your destination's or travel businesses' needs. In this blog post, we'll compare two of the most popular tour guide systems on the market: SmartGuide and VoiceMap.
Introducing the leading tour guide systems on the market
SmartGuide revolutionizes the tourism industry with its digital audio guide platform, transforming any smartphone into a personal tour guide. This innovative solution empowers destination management organizations (DMOs), tourist attractions, tour operators, and travel businesses to effortlessly captivate and enthrall visitors with immersive stories in almost 1000 destinations, and with its diverse array of features.
VoiceMap is another popular tour guide system that provides audio tours in over 300 cities around the world. Its audio tours are narrated by local experts who provide insight into the history and culture of each destination. Additionally, users can access interactive maps and photos of attractions to help them plan their trips more efficiently.
Destinations and tourism businesses seeking a dependable tour guide system can find unique advantages in both SmartGuide and VoiceMap . SmartGuide's all-in-one solution with comprehensive features caters to those desiring a complete package, while VoiceMap's immersive audio tours deliver a unique experience. Both services offer exceptional value for money.
SmartGuide: Empowering personalized digital tours
SmartGuide is a digital audio guide platform with a mobile app that offers self-guided tours and stories with extensive coverage of over 100,000 tourist places worldwide, featuring publicly accessible content, mostly for free.
One of the standout features of SmartGuide is its open self-service AI-powered content management system (CMS), which gives destinations, popular tourist attractions, and tour guides an opportunity to effortlessly publish their own digital guide in as little as an hour. Its level of accessibility allows for tailoring a personalized visitor experience, fostering engagement, and enabling businesses to attract more visitors with content aimed at their particular target audiences. SmartGuide's CMS has a built-in automatic text-to-speech feature (so the written text automatically converts to an audio track in seconds). It's also possible to translate an entire tour to another language with a single click with the integrated DeepL translator. By enabling fast and simple customized content creation for different audiences and nationalities, SmartGuide also serves as a solution for achieving more sustainable tourism in destinations by distributing visitors more evenly and guiding them independently to less crowded areas.
With SmartGuide, content creators can prepare mainstream content for a wide audience as well as specialized thematic tours tailored to niche interests. The platform also offers valuable features such as big data dashboards, GPS heatmaps of visitor behavior, and expert data analysis services, empowering destination management and marketing efforts.
SmartGuide's Impressive Accolades: Recognitions and Awards
SmartGuide has earned widespread recognition, receiving numerous accolades and awards in over 20 international industry competitions. Notably, in 2020, it received the prestigious Accelerator Award from the Singapore Tourism Board among hundreds of global startups, and the European Commission bestowed it with the Seal of Excellence for its exceptional response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The remarkable achievements continued as SmartGuide garnered the Hero of Tourism 2022 award, as voted by experts and the general public. It also received a special honor from the Minister of Regional Development and the Czech Tourism Director's Award in the Digitalization category. These acknowledgments demonstrate SmartGuide's excellence and impact in the tourism industry.
Recently, SmartGuide secured a remarkable €1 Million grant to develop an Artificial Intelligence system that will provide personalized travel recommendations based on individual interests and support augmented reality experiences. The company's exceptional work has been recommended for funding by the European Commission, and it has been approved as a preferred digital travel services provider within the DigiTour project funding initiative.
Further solidifying its reputation, SmartGuide was invited to present as a best practice tourism innovator at the European Tourism Forum 2022 and European Tourism Day 2023, sharing insights with EU tourism policymakers.
SmartGuide boasts an impressive roster of clients and partners, including Switzerland Tourism, Prague City Tourism, Bratislava Tourism Board, Carlsbad, Singapore National Heritage Board, Harvard Business School, Dubai Tourism, Pilsner Urquell, RegioJet, Thames River Sightseeing, Deutsche Bundesbahn, and many other esteemed organizations. These collaborations highlight SmartGuide's trusted position in the industry and its commitment to delivering exceptional digital travel experiences.
- No additional maintenance costs for destinations and travel businesses that want to operate digital guides.
- SmartGuide currently covers 100,000+ tourist places worldwide.
- 102 Languages available to create guides in (Chinese, French, German, Spanish, English, Hindi, Slovak, Croatian, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Afrikaans, Dutch, and Finnish, to name a few)
- Free CMS with AI-powered text-to-speech and auto-translation for easy localization of content.
- Accurate and detailed insights provided by big data dashboards and GPS heatmaps of visitors' behavior.
- Expert analysis of data to understand visitor demographics, acquisition channels, and popular tours/places.
- Destination marketing services and expert consultations are available.
- Possibility for travel businesses to promote their offerings via POI Advertising ( contact us to learn more)
- Less localized content is available in languages other than English, which is depending on the preference of content creators (since SmartGuide is an open platform where anyone can create a digital travel guide, the content localization mirrors the preferred languages of whoever creates a tour).
- Fewer integrations, although more are being implemented (currently, SmartGuide supports e.g. the GetYourGuide ticket sales).
Unlocking hidden gems with VoiceMap's audio tour app
VoiceMap is a digital audio guide and a mobile app that offers GPS-guided audio tours in more than 300 destinations worldwide. These tours are created by local storytellers, such as journalists, filmmakers, novelists, podcasters, and tour guides. By utilizing the visitor's device's location, the app automatically plays audio at the precise time, syncing with their movements. Additionally, VoiceMap provides directions, empowering destinations, and travel businesses to allow visitors to fully immerse themselves in the environment instead of focusing on the screen. Similar to SmartGuide, the tours can be enjoyed offline, as you can install the audio and access an offline map.
VoiceMap's tours are designed to be easily discoverable through search optimization and are distributed through a vast network of partners. The app is available for download on both the App Store and Google Play.
This guided tour app offers flexible pricing plans, ranging from $20 to $50 for self-guided tours, with revenue sharing for tour publishers. Presales and aftersales support are provided.
Exclusive celebrity tours, like Sir Ian McKellen's London West End tour, are available only on VoiceMap.
- Offers the convenience of a single account that can be accessed across multiple devices.
- Has a forum where professional tour guides can discuss creating and testing their own tours.
- The CMS is a user-friendly, web-based publishing tool that provides estimated talk times and word counts, eliminating the need for extensive testing and recording.
- Provides alphanumeric vouchers for specific tours, which can be redeemed on their website or mobile apps. These vouchers are unique, allowing for one or multiple uses, and can be redeemed through apps, web browsers, or by entering codes in tour URLs.
- Doesn't incorporate AI-powered text-to-speech or any other AI-driven functionalities.
- Doesn't offer big data dashboards or GPS heatmaps as part of its features.
- Instead of relying on GPS, VoiceMap uses indoor positioning systems (IPS) to determine the user's position and provide accurate directions.
- Some visitors report VoiceMap does not automatically start the tour based on your location; instead, you must be on their designated route and heading in the correct direction. This can be frustrating for users accustomed to seamless location-based triggering.
- Visitors also report that the information provided during the tour is limited, offering minimal insights compared to what could be obtained from Google Maps.
- Another complaint reports encountering multiple instances of the app freezing.
- Not accessible on the Windows Phone Store.
By comprehending the advantages and disadvantages of each platform, destinations and travel businesses can make informed choices regarding the platform that aligns best with their requirements and enhances the visitor experience they aim to deliver.
Celebrating excellence: VoiceMap's accolades and recognition
VoiceMap has garnered extensive media coverage, being prominently featured in prestigious publications like Forbes, The Guardian, and TechCrunch. Furthermore, it achieved the distinction of being a finalist in the Web Summit Pitch 2018 competition. According to the VoiceMap blog, the app has received notable recognition and awards for its exceptional contributions.
Additionally, it boasts an impressive cumulative total of 10,000 ratings across all tours available on the platform. Moreover, the VoiceMap website proudly highlights the involvement of acclaimed producer Claire Schoen, renowned for her expertise in crafting captivating audio narratives for the app.
Features comparison
Both solutions deliver remarkable experiences to enrich the travel journeys of adventurers seeking unforgettable explorations, each offering distinct features that set them apart from the competition. VoiceMap specializes in B2C paid audio tours and stands out with its advanced tour preview and web version features. On the other hand, SmartGuide has gained significant traction in the market, even though it was launched three years later than VoiceMap. It boasts three times more destinations and five times more users. SmartGuide goes beyond individual tours and offers comprehensive destination guides that include information on specific points of interest, destination insights, experiences, services, and more. SmartGuide also offers additional smart functions, such as data analytics, user messaging, API integrations, and personalized recommendations. It supports a wider range of languages and provides a considerable amount of free content and functions. In contrast, VoiceMap has limited free tour options and restrictions on free tour generation and duration.
In summary, while both VoiceMap and SmartGuide provide CMS for publishing audio tours, SmartGuide offers a more extensive range of destinations, advanced features, and greater language support. It also provides a larger amount of free content and functions, making it a comprehensive and versatile choice for those seeking a digital audio guide platform.

What to Consider When Choosing Wireless Audio Tour Guide Systems
When it comes to selecting the best wireless audio tour guide system for your specific needs, it’s important to consider several key factors. By evaluating these aspects, you can make an informed decision and ensure a seamless and immersive tour experience for your visitors.
Sound Quality
One of the primary factors to assess is the sound quality offered by the audio tour guide system. Look for systems that provide clear and crisp audio reproduction, allowing visitors to hear every detail and narration without any distortion.
Opt for systems equipped with advanced digital signal processing technology, as they can enhance the audio quality and provide an immersive experience.
Range & Coverage
Consider the range and coverage capabilities of the wireless audio tour guide system. A system with a broad coverage range ensures that visitors receive uninterrupted audio signals, even in large venues or outdoor settings.
Look for systems that utilize robust wireless technologies to minimize the risk of signal loss or interference, providing consistent audio quality throughout the tour.
Connectivity Options
Evaluate the connectivity options offered by the audio tour guide system. Modern systems often provide multiple connectivity choices, such as Bluetooth, NFC, or Wi-Fi. These options allow visitors to connect their own devices, such as smartphones or tablets, for a more personalized experience.
The ability to support various connection methods ensures flexibility and compatibility with different devices.
Battery Life and Charging Options
Consider the battery life of the wireless audio tour guide system, especially if you anticipate longer tours or multiple tours in a day. Look for systems with long-lasting batteries that can endure the entire duration of the tour without interruption.
Explore the charging options available. Some systems may offer convenient charging stations or quick charging features, ensuring minimal downtime between tours.
Ease of Use
Choose an audio tour guide system that is user-friendly for both the tour guides and the visitors. The system should have an intuitive interface, making it easy for tour guides to operate and manage the devices. Visitors should also find it straightforward to use, with clear instructions and simple controls.
Consider systems with features like automatic channel scanning or preset configurations, which simplify the setup process and enhance the overall user experience.
Scalability and Versatility
If your tours cater to varying group sizes or multilingual audiences, look for a wireless audio tour guide system that offers scalability and versatility. Systems that support real-time translations or multiple audio channels can accommodate diverse language requirements, ensuring a smooth and inclusive tour experience for all visitors.
Consider systems that can integrate with additional accessories like neck loops or headsets , providing comfort and customization options.
Durability & Reliability
For tours that involve outdoor or rugged environments, prioritize systems that are durable and reliable. Look for devices that are built with sturdy materials and are resistant to impact, dust, and moisture.
A reliable anti-interference mechanism is also crucial for stable and uninterrupted audio transmission, even in areas with heavy Wi-Fi traffic or other wireless devices.
Additional Features
Explore any additional features or technologies that the wireless audio tour guide system may offer. For example, augmented reality (AR) capabilities can provide a unique and interactive tour experience by overlaying virtual information onto real-world surroundings.
These features can enhance visitor engagement and make the tour more memorable.
Final Thoughts
As the tourism industry continues to grow and evolve, wireless audio tour guide systems play a crucial role in enhancing visitor experiences.
When choosing the right audio tour guide system , tour operators and cultural institutions should consider factors such as sound quality, range, connectivity options, scalability, durability, and additional features.
By investing in the right wireless audio tour guide system, they can create memorable and immersive experiences for their visitors, leaving a lasting impact on their journey of discovery and exploration.

Our GuideAlong Reviews
Sometimes all we need is a suggestion from others to inspire us to try something new. These GuideAlong reviews from simplyjolayne.com articles show our enthusiastic support of these app tours.
Great Smoky Mountain National Park
In his research, my husband, Chris found an app called GuideAlong . It was an excellent guided tour throughout the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Using the wonders of GPS and satellites, the commentary played automatically as we passed a GPS point, sharing behind-the-scene stories, tips, side trips, and driving directions. The guide was excellent.
Chris and I highly recommend the GuideAlong app for Yosemite National Park or other national parks you may be visiting this summer. The guides are available for a number of destinations, and provide lots of information, history, significant contributions of different people, and random interesting information .

Currently, the GuideAlong app offers audio tours throughout the United States, in Canada, and Australia. You can purchase each tour separately or check out the p re-packaged bundles in a variety of locations to save money.

What Happens if the Area You Visit Does Not Have a Great Cell Signal?
Download the GuideAlong App and the tour you have selected while you DO have wifi or good cell service.
Because the app uses the magic of GPS to automatically play the audio tours, you do not need to have cell service to use the app once you have downloaded your tour .
The GPS signal comes from satellites and is free.
Reminder * Download the App and your selected tour BEFORE you set off on your adventures.

7 Useful Apps Every Traveler Should Know About

Technology continues to make travel easier for millions of people around the globe. New apps offer travelers fresh ways to research a destination, connect with fellow globetrotters, communicate with locals, and track their flights. As a full-time digital nomad , I’ve learned the importance of having the right tools at your disposal when on the road.
Over the past few years, I’ve visited dozens of countries, flown hundreds of thousands of miles, and tested countless apps to find the ones that prove to be the most helpful. And while tools like Meetup, Google Maps, Google Translate, currency converters, and vacation rental , airline, and hotel–specific apps are in fact indispensable on most trips, I find that many of the best travel apps are still undiscovered by my fellow travelers.
Below, seven travel apps that make life on the go markedly easier (and more fun), from real-time flight trackers to photo-sharing gems—all of these apps are free, but some have paid pro versions worth considering. Don’t think these apps are only for full-time travelers—they prove useful for every type of traveler, whether you're in a brand-new destination or back for a return visit.
Discover the best apps for travelers:
Apps for flying, apps for exploring, apps for photo sharing.
My favorite app on this list is Flighty, a must-have for any frequent flier . The free version is fantastic, but I recommend splurging for the premium version, which gives you even more useful information and comes at a reasonable cost of $48 per year. The functionality it provides more than justifies the price.
The free version allows you to input all future flights plus past journeys you've taken within the last year. It provides updated information if any schedule changes occur to upcoming flights and allows you to track all the miles you’ve flown in one place.
The other main benefit is that it allows you to share your flight information with friends and family members who are also on Flighty. They will receive real-time updates about your flight without you having to text them. My parents love to make sure I’m safe so they appreciate getting detailed information about my travels—even while I’m in the air.
Flightradar24 is a favorite app among fellow aviation geeks. It lets you track almost any aircraft you see in the air throughout the day or night. You can track your own flight, a friend's flight, or any plane you see in real-time. It shares plenty of cool data, like the altitude, speed, arrival and departure airports and times, and tail number.
There are tons of eSIM apps on the market, but Airalo is probably my favorite, with digital SIM cards available for dozens of countries. I find it to be the most reliable and offers the best data packages. It can be a little pricey, but it is the best option if you’re only taking short trips. Holafly is another eSIM app that offers unlimited data and works well, but I find the app to be much more glitchy than Airalo and would recommend using the desktop version.
This one is for the planner of the group. Wanderlog merges the best of a bunch of different apps into one. Imagine an app that lets you plan a trip with ease: collaborate with friends as if you’re on Google Docs, manage expense tracking like Splitwise, and have a central place for your reservations, checklists, and more. Tripit is a similar travel planner app, so you can download both and get a feel for which interface you like better.
Been allows you to track the countries you’ve visited and make a wish list of places you can’t wait to cross off your travel bucket list . It gives you information like the percentage of the globe you’ve been to and shows you a world map of your trips. It’s always fun to add in a new country whenever I reach my destination.
This app was introduced to me by fellow nomads I met at a cafe in Montevideo, Uruguay . It automatically tracks your route across the world, allowing you to quickly upload pictures throughout your travels that can be viewed by anyone who has access to your profile. It’s an excellent way to share important moments with loved ones without needing to send photos to each person individually. Users can also create easily accessible guides filled with up-to-date information to help you plan your own trip.
Steller is another app that a friend recently introduced me to, and I’ve quickly fallen in love with it. It uses a combination of AI and user experiences to help you plan trips around the globe. From recommendations of things to see, like the Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires or the Royal Palace of Naples, to full guidebooks created by users, you can get inspired, book experiences, and discover hidden gems within this app.
