The Domkirke church in Stavanger, Noway

Prekestol — Norwegian for "Preacher's Pulpit" — is one of the area's biggest draws. The 600-meter climb may seem daunting, but it's actually quite approachable: The trails are well-marked, and the views on the way up slowly unveil the varied topography of the fjord below. By the time you reach the top, you might never want to leave.

Stavanger Norway

Welcome to Stavanger, a city nestled on the southwest coast of Norway known for its picturesque town center, friendly people, and rich cultural heritage. Stavanger proudly claims to be the Viking birthplace, where history and myth come together. As you go east, the scenery changes to spectacular fjords and towering mountains, among which stands out the stunning Lysefjord, home to the legendary Preikestolen, or “the Pulpit Rock”. To the south is Jaeren, an area with flat, open landscapes and extensive sandy beaches. In this post, read about:

Stavanger Cruise Port

Stavanger cruise terminal is conveniently located near the historic Old Town (also known as Gamle Stavanger) and within walking distance of various attractions. Cruise ships primarily dock at the Strandkaien Quay , which can accommodate up to two cruise vessels, depending on the size. If more ships are in port, which rarely happens, cruise ships may dock in Mekjarvik, a commercial port located about 10 km/6 miles (a 15-minute drive) northwest of Stavanger, or they may tender.

There are no facilities at Strandkaien Quay, except for a Tourist Information Center where you can get city maps and useful information from friendly English-speaking staff. Taxis and parking for buses are available on the pier. Shops, restaurants, cafes and landmarks are located within a short walk from the terminal. There may be a Hop on Hop off bus service, however, get the latest updates at the Tourist Information Center.

Stavanger cruise port

Region Baltic - Norwegian Fjords - Russia

Local Time 2024-02-24 05:10

Port Stavanger cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Stavanger, Norway. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Stavanger is a port city in Rogaland, southwestern Norway,. The city has population around 130,000 (metro 320,000), ranking it the country's 3rd-largest metro area and Norway's 4th most populous municipality.

The Norwegian passenger shipping company FJORD LINE offers direct crossings between Stavanger and Denmark ( Hirtshals ). The route Hirtshals- Stavanger - Bergen is operated year-round. FJORD LINE's schedule includes 1 daily crossing Stavanger-Hirtshals (travel time 11,5 hours), 2 daily crossings Stavanger-Bergen (5,5 hours) and 1 daily crossing Stavanger- Langesund (17,5 hours).

The town was officially founded in 1125, following the completion of the Stavanger Cathedral. Most of its architecture consists of 18th-19th-century wooden houses (protected as cultural heritage). Gladmat festival is held here annually and considered one of Scandinavia's leading food festivals.

The city's current economy is heavily based on the oil industry. The city is widely referred to as Norway's "oil capital". The biggest company is Statoil (Norwegian energy company headquartered here). Every two years here is hosted ONS (Offshore Northern Seas) - energy sector's 2nd largest exhibition and conference event (the largest being Caspian Oil and Gas Conference).

In 2018, the cruise port had scheduled 187 ship calls with expected around 333,000 passengers. Predictions for 2019 showed 25% increase (ship calls) and 45% increase (passengers). Berth bookings are on a first-come-first-serve basis. The port has plans for building new berth (for mega-liners ) and LNG bunkering (for LNG-powered large ships). Currently, the cruise port supplies with LNG only smaller-sized vessels.

The port announced a record-breaking 2019 cruise season with over 45% increase over 2018. For 2019 were booked a total of 243 ship calls (69 different liners) with estimated nearly 500,000 passengers. According to port statistics, ~80% of cruise ship tourists are Europeans, of which half are from Northern Europe. The port currently has 4 cruise berths and around 200 no-ship days per year.

In June 2022, Enova SF (Norwegian state-owned enterprise) provided grants for installing shore power connectivity at several Norwegian cruise ports (including Stavanger), scheduled for completion and inauguration in 2023. Between 2016-2022, Enova granted a total of NOK 842 million for 119 such projects. The technology allows the berthed cruise ship to shut down its diesel engines and instead use the city-grid electricity for the onboard hotel operations and services, thus saving fuel and reducing emissions. Enova SF (2001-founded government enterprise) is owned by Norway's Ministry of Petroleum and Energy and managed by the Ministry of Climate and Environment.

During the post-COVID 2022 season, Port Stavanger handled a total of 211 cruise ship calls and 429048 passengers (out of total ~4,3 million cruisers who visited Norway).

Cruise ships in Stavanger  dock directly in downtown. The port has capacity to handle two  of world's largest cruise liners simultaneously. Within sight (short walk from the port) are located shops, market, cafes. The port has no dedicated cruise terminal for passengers.

Stavanger’s city center is small and walkable, featuring historic dockside warehouses and picturesque 18th-century streets that rise from a lively harbor. With more than 170 white wooden homes, Old Stavanger boasts Europe’s best preserved wooden house village.

Stavanger is a hub for academics and research because of its many colleges and universities. This may be seen in the city’s diverse retail offerings and bustling nightlife. The fact that Stavanger and Sandnes were named European Capitals of Culture in 2008 is a testament to the abundance of cultural opportunities available to residents.

Stavanger attractions

You can visit the Norwegian Petroleum Museum, the Stavanger Museum of Fine Arts, and the Norwegian Canning Museum during your stroll through the city. Stavanger Cathedral, built in 1150, and the attractive old city with its predominantly tiny, white wooden buildings are also to be found here.

The natural world provides only a small portion of the city’s entertainment; the rest comes from the many events and festivals held all year long. You won’t have time to get bored in this city, with events like the Village Festival, which promotes healthy lifestyles and physical activity, the May Jazz Festival, held every May, and the International Chamber Music Festival, held every August. Every year at the end of July, the Gladmat Food Festival draws in the neighborhood of 250,000 people.

Prekestolen – Preacher’s Pulpit

Pulpit Rock is a well-known landmark in Stavanger. A total of almost 250,000 individuals make the ascent to this cliff, which is located 600 meters above sea level. The Prekestol (Pulpit Rock), a flat-topped cliff that rises around 1,960 feet above the water, is without a doubt the most stunning landmark and most popular tourist destination in the Stavanger fjord. It’s a two-hour drive from Stavanger via road and ferry. It’s a precipitous drop, so caution is advised. Nonetheless, the sights are amazing for those who make the journey out here.

Lysefjord is a dramatic gap in the mountains up to 1.25 miles wide and 23 miles long to the east of Stavanger, showing gorgeous bright green water. The limestone cliffs tower 3,300 feet above the fjord, making this the highest point. A visit to this stunning terrain is a must if you’re in the region.

Sightseeing:

Get to know Stavanger . Smiling, friendly Stavanger. Stavanger is a rich city - rich in culture, nature, experiences and good times! Lots of charm and sea breezes.

The region has long claimed to be the cradle of the Vikings, and it is also where the Great Norwegian Fjords begins. In east the landscape varies between fjords and steep mountains, like the Lysefjord with Preikestolen - "the Pulpit Rock", is an hour boat trip from the city center. South is Jaeren, the flat open landscape, with long sandy beaches.

  • The Stavanger Oil Museum is a very interesting building with fascinating information on Norway's oil industry. Displays of submersibles, drilling equipment, a mock oil platform, and audio-visual presentations make for a good few hours. The museum caters for all ages.
  • The Canning Museum may not seem like the most interesting place to visit but it is a surprisingly good little museum with a lot of hands-on exhibits.
  • Gamle Stavanger (Old Stavanger) is a well preserved slice of Norwegian history. Old winding streets and wooden houses are representative of accommodation from Stavangers days as a the canning capital of Norway. Most houses in Old Stavanger are privately owned and well kept.
  • Preikestolen (the pulpit rock) can be seen by boat or hiked up. It is an impressive geological feature that is prominent on almost every Stavanger postcard. It protrudes from the rock about 604 meters above the fjord and is almost totally flat on top. The view from the boat is less satisfying than the hike and a round trip takes several hours. Boats leave from the Vaagen (the harbor in the center of town.) The hike is moderate and the trail is well used especially during the summer.
  • A good place for a photo opportunity are the Three Swords (Sverd i fjell, literally Swords in Stone), a monument outside the center of Stavanger, beside the Hafrsfjord. The swords themselves are massive and in the background is the fjord. The monument commemorates the battle of Hafrsfjord in the late 800's where Harald Hårfagre beat his eastern opposition and became the first King of Norway.
  • Sculptures - In 2000 the mobile installation Another Place by British sculptor Anthony Gormley was placed on and off Sola beach. A few years later a new and permanent installation Broken Column by the same artist, was placed at various locations surrounding the center of Stavanger.
  • The Rogaland Kunstmuseum (art museum) is on Mosvatnet Lake, only 2 km from the city center. The museum has a permanent exhibition of Norwegian art, and a rotating exhibition that is sometimes quite spectacular. Be sure to see the Lars Hertervig paintings; you'll see the landscape of the islands just north of Stavanger reflected in his work.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

The primary Lysefjord cruise company is Rødne: https://rodne.no/ You can find the schedule and prices on their website along with a map of their departure point, which is right near the cruise pier. If you decide to do it on your own, you might want to pre-book online to guarantee space, just in case they're the same operator the ship uses!

Stavanger is very walkable and there is no immediate need for taxi's, buses etc.

Stavanger hop-on hop-off shore excursion.

As the weather in Norway can be very unpredictable, make sure to check the cancellation policies in case of inclement weather. It is no fun driving around in the clouds.

Nearby Places:

Shopping and food.

Cobbled pedestrian shopping streets abound with quality Norwegian goods – hand-knitted sweaters, wood, pewter, glass, ceramics and jewelry and gifts unique to Stavanger, such as replicas of Viking-age jewelry discovered in the area.

Passengers can start with the market almost at the ships's gangway, absorb the atmosphere and then visit the Anglo- Norman style Cathedral, dating from 1125, a time when the town only had some 200 inhabitants.

The Norwegian currency is the Norwegian crown (norske krone), abbreviated kr. A 1/100th krone is called øre. 1.00 EUR = about 8 NOK

ATMs in Norway are called Minibank.

Nearly all stores accept major credit cards such as Mastercard and Visa (Bring your passport/driver's license, as you are required to identify yourself when using a credit card).

Currency Converter

Communication:

Norwegian is the official language of Norway. The language is very close and mutually intelligible with the two other Scandinavian languages, English widely spoken.

Both McDonalds and Burger King are only a short walk from your ship and provide free WiFi.

At times you might be able to find an open Wifi connection on the open decks of your ship, depending at which pier you are docked.

Opening Hours and Holidays:

Opening hours in Norway are better than they used to be, but many smaller stores still close early on Saturday (1 PM or 3 PM is typical) and nearly everything is closed on Sundays. You'll often see opening hours written as "9-21 (9-18)" on doors, meaning 9 AM to 9 PM weekdays, 9 AM to 6 PM Saturday.

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson cruises to primary win, advances to April 2 election

stavanger cruise trips

Incumbent Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson cruised to a first-place finish in the mayoral primary Tuesday, advancing to the April 2 general election.

Johnson won 86% of the vote Tuesday night.

In a statement, Johnson said he was "filled with immense gratitude" for the results.

"This victory is not just mine; it is ours," he said. It is a testament to our collective belief in the power of unity, hard work, and a relentless commitment to progress. Together, we have made significant strides in making Milwaukee a safer, more prosperous, and inclusive city. Yet, our journey is far from over. There's more work to do, more dreams to fulfill, and more challenges to overcome."

Johnson will face Wisconsin God Squad founder David King, who received 10% of the vote to Ieshuh Griffin's 4%.

King in a statement late Tuesday framed the race as "David D. King vs Goliath," saying he was running not just against Johnson but also forces like the Democratic Party and the "mainstream media" that he said do not cover Johnson critically.

He called for solutions to the troubles at the Housing Authority of Milwaukee and for specifics on new laws Johnson would recommend to fight gun violence in the city.

Johnson is seeking a full four years in office after serving the final two years on the term of former Mayor Tom Barrett, who left office in December 2021 to become ambassador to Luxembourg. His departure meant that Johnson, then Common Council president, became acting mayor until the April 2022 election to fill the remainder of the term.

Unlike in 2022, when multiple candidates already in elected office jumped into the mayoral race, this year Johnson did not face anyone with previous experience in office or with a comparable campaign war chest or public platform.

The same is true for County Executive David Crowley, who is also facing a challenge from Griffin.

Some posited that the proven power of incumbency in Milwaukee coupled with Johnson's and Crowley's legislative accomplishments on issues such as the new local sales taxes led would-be challengers — and their would-be funders — to calculate that it's not worth taking on an expensive race to try to oust these incumbents .

According to their latest campaign finance reports, Johnson and Crowley had $363,966 and $251,552 cash on hand, respectively.

By comparison, King had $476 cash on hand. For both her city and county races, Griffin filed as exempt as the money raised for her campaign falls below the required threshold.

Griffin is also running for Common Council District 3 against Ald. Jonathan Brostoff.

Also on the primary ballot Tuesday were races for Common Council districts 5, 7 and 11 — the latter two without incumbents.

Top sights & landmarks for cruises to stavanger, stavanger cathedral.

The Stavanger Cathedral is the oldest cathedral in Norway and dates back to 1100. It has gothic architecture with two thick steeples on either side of the entrance. The cathedral serves as the seat of the Bishop of Stavanger.

Norwegian Petroleum Museum

Petroleum plays a big part in the wealth of Norway, and the Norwegian Petroleum Museum aptly demonstrates that. You’ll learn how oil and gas are discovered and what is done to turn them into usable substances. In addition, the museum depicts how petroleum affects life in Norway. The museum is interesting for both adults and kids thanks to the in-depth information that you’re guided through by a cartoon cat named Petro and an oil worker called Drille. The architecture of the building in which the museum is housed is also impressive since it includes elements of petroleum production, including Norwegian bedrock and offshore oil installations.

Norwegian Canning Museum

Learn more about Stavanger’s history at the Norwegian Canning Museum, which is housed in a former canning factory. The canning industry played a vital role in Stavanger’s economy from the 1890s to 1960. You’ll see how the canning factory was set up and how the fresh fish found their way into the cans. Smoking ovens are lit every Tuesday and Thursday during the summer, making it an extra fun place to head if your Stavanger fjord cruise is in port on one of those days.

Flor og Fjaere

Feel completely immersed in nature at Flor og Fjaere, a gorgeous garden on the idyllic island of Sør Hidle. To get there, you’ll cross the fjord on a scenic, 20-minute boat ride. Once you arrive to the garden, you’ll be led through its exotic plants by a knowledgeable guide. You can also dine at the on-site restaurant that features international cuisine and local seafood.

Gamle Stavanger

Old Stavanger (referred to locally as Gamle Stavanger) is a can’t-miss part of a Stavanger fjord cruise itinerary. The historic neighborhood has beautifully restored wooden buildings that date back to the 18th century. Many of the buildings once served as the home of the canning factory workers, which adds an interesting layer of history to your view as you amble past old-fashioned street lanterns on Old Stavanger’s cobblestoned streets.

Top things to do in stavanger, pulpit rock hike.

The Pulpit Rock (also called Preikestolen) is the focal point of one of Norway’s most famous hikes. The rock has even been featured in Hollywood blockbusters like Mission Impossible: Fallout. The hike is five miles round-trip and takes roughly four hours, depending on your fitness level and how much time you spend at the top. It’s starting point right in Stavanger and moderate difficulty level make it a popular hike with visitors. Passengers on a Stavanger fjord cruise will want to make sure they have plenty of time to do the hike and get back to the ship in time. Once at the top, you’ll find a flat rock area with vertical cliffs that go straight down into the fjord below. Its edge is not the place you want to be if you’re scared of heights, but it does provide incredible, awe-inspiring views of the fjord and surrounding mountains.

Flørli 4444

You’ll build up those leg muscles on a visit to Flørli 4444, the longest wooden staircase in the world. You get there via a boat ride through Lysefjord that takes you to the village of Flørli, home to this iconic stairway. Heading up the 4,444 steps is far from easy, but you’ll be rewarded with one of the best views you’ve likely ever seen.

Scenic Lysefjord Cruise

If you want to enjoy the views you can see on a Stavanger cruise, but not work up a sweat doing so, a scenic Lysefjord boat ride is an excellent way to do just that. Marvel at the sheer size of the towering landscape on either side of the fjord that majestically juts up into the sky with calm blue water lapping at its base.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Stavanger Cruise Port

Stavanger is considered to be the gastronomic capital of Norway due to its focus on locally sourced, high-quality ingredients and diverse cuisine. Whether you want something fancy or casual, Nordic or international, you’ll be able to find something to satisfy your taste buds in Stavanger. Fjord cruise passengers can check out these dining establishments while in port.

26 North Restaurant & Social Club

The dining experience at 26 North Restaurant is based around four core elements: Nordic, organic, timeless, and social. Here, you can expect local ingredients and a fun, social atmosphere.

Dognvill Burger

For an excellently made burger you can enjoy in a casual restaurant located within a 19th century wooden house, head to Dognvill Burger in Stavanger’s downtown area.

Sabi Omakase

You might not think of sushi while on your Stavanger fjord cruise, but you won’t want to overlook Sabi Omakase while you’re visiting. This Michelin-starred restaurant serves Edomae-style sushi in an intimate restaurant setting. The coveted chef’s table offers seating for nine.

Another Michelin-star restaurant in Stavanger is RENAA, which was the first restaurant in Norway outside of Oslo to get the prestigious star rating. RENAA’s 21-seat dining room may be small, but it provides an elaborate culinary experience that serves each guest with a chef’s tasting menu that can be paired with wine. The tasting menu features fresh, local ingredients and is an incredible example of Nordic cuisine.

Culture & History in Stavanger

Stavanger is one of the oldest cities in Norway with its origins dating back to the 12th century. It has an interesting history, with historic ties to the Vikings as well as Christian priests and the monarchy. It has long been an important port city due to its excellent natural harbor and location to the Jæren region, and was a strategic port of the shipping route along Norway’s western coast.Today, Stavanger is a vibrant city that embraces its medieval past while clearly developing its own modern vibe and culture. This is most apparent in the food scene, which features a variety of cuisine styles and serves up some of the best seafood you can find in Norway.

Stavanger Port Facilities & Location

Cruise ships conveniently dock right by the central part of Stavanger. Your ship will pull into one of the four berths at the Port of Stavanger. Depending which berth your ship is docked, you’ll be a five to ten-minute walk from town and most of Stavanger’s top sites and attractions.

Transportation in Stavanger

Stavanger has a bus station with many routes covering the city and nearby Sandnes. There is also a train service between Stavanger and Sandnes. For those wanting to explore more of the sights via water, you’ll find ferry service to Lysebotn, Ryfylke, Tau, Kvitsøyruten, Hjelmeland, Haugesund, and the city islands. For those wishing for more direct service, taxis are available for hire.

Shopping Near the Stavanger Cruise Port

Some quintessential Norwegian souvenirs to get during your Stavanger cruise port of call are troll figurines and cheese slicers with an intricately designed handle. For high-quality knitwear and sweaters, try Dale of Norway, Skagen, Oleana, and Kirkegata. A run-of-the-mill souvenir shop is located within the Stavanger Port Authority building by the harbor.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

Norway’s official currency is the Norwegian krone, though some tourist-focused shops may accept euros. For tipping, small change is usually left at restaurants with 5% to 10% of the total bill being the typical tip amount left. Tipping is not common for taxi service.

American Queen Voyages shuts down, cancels future cruises amid reported service issues

stavanger cruise trips

American Queen Voyages has shut down.

An automated voice message on its customer information hotline said the cruise line "has made the difficult decision" to suspend operations, and all future cruises have been scrapped. “Guests and customers should expect to be fully refunded for canceled cruises,” the message said.

The message directed listeners to www.aqvrefunds.com “to begin the refund process,” and said they could find more information at www.aqvinfo.com .

"Despite our best efforts, demand for overnight cruises has not recovered following the pandemic, and AQV has become financially unsustainable," a guest FAQ section on the second website reads. "We thank you for your support and deeply regret any inconvenience this causes you."

No ships were sailing at the time of the closure. Adam Peakes, president of the line's owner Hornblower Group, said it plans to "sell the company, or, if a sale cannot be achieved, its operations will be wound down."

"Please know this decision was not made lightly," he said in an emailed statement shared with USA TODAY. "We are deeply proud of our employees and crew for the outstanding services they have provided our guests over the years. As the backbone of the AQV experience we extend our deepest appreciation to our team for their unwavering commitment, passion and hard work, which has been exceptional. We would also like to express our heartfelt gratitude to our guests, partners, agents and the local communities where we call who have each been integral to our journey."

Your cruise was canceled: Now what?

The news comes after the line reportedly canceled three season-opening sailings set to take place on the Mississippi River later this month, attributing the changes to an extended layup schedule. Multiple industry groups previously suspended sales of American Queen Voyages cruises because of service issues, including delayed commission payments, Travel Weekly reported in January.

The line began sailing as American Queen Steamboat Company in 2011 and was rebranded as American Queen Voyages in 2021 after merging with Victory Cruise Lines.

She's been on over 40 cruises and says AirTags are now a must-have for her travels

  • Allie Hubers, an experienced cruiser, said she always packs an AirTag in her travel bag.
  • In a Cruise Blog article, Hubers wrote that AirTags help her locate her bags quickly.
  • Hubers said paying $24 for an AirTag is worth the peace of mind while cruising.

Insider Today

Allie Hubers, an experienced traveler who's boarded over 40 cruises, says an Apple AirTag is now an essential item on her packing list.

In an article for the industry site Cruise Blog , Hubers shared her four must-pack items for a cruise. Hubers told Business Insider in an email that she's been cruising since she was three years old and has traveled to 59 countries, mostly by cruise. Hubers is a freelance writer and full-time operations analyst, per her LinkedIn profile.

Hubers wrote in the article that she first brought an AirTag — a 1.2-inch device enabling iPhone users to track its real-time location — before a 12-night European cruise in 2022.

What she loved about the AirTag , Hubers said, was that she could track her bags at the cruise terminal and ensure they were on board the ship. She found this helpful, as passengers typically have to leave their luggage with porters at the cruise terminal.

"With my Apple AirTag, I can be confident that I won't lose the location of my luggage," Hubers wrote on the blog.

Another upside to using an AirTag while cruising is easily locating your bag by playing a "ding" sound on the device, Hubers said. When disembarking from a cruise, passengers have to look for their own bags at the cruise terminal, she added.

"The price is minimal compared to the peace of mind it provides knowing the exact location of my belongings at all times," Hubers wrote, referring to how much an AirTag costs — $29 a piece, or $99 for a pack of four.

Hubers told BI that when she traveled on a 12-night African cruise last month, her bags didn't show up until hours after she boarded. That's when the AirTags became handy, Hubers said.

"I started to worry that my bag did not get loaded onto the ship," Hubers said.

"I was able to use the 'Find My' app to play a sound on the AirTag and locate my luggage down the hallway — my suitcase had been delivered to the wrong cabin!" she added.

Other tracking devices are available for non-iPhone users as well. Tile , a tracker compatible with both iOS and Android phones, costs $25. The similarly priced Chipolo tracker is another option for those using Androids.

AirTags have gained popularity among travelers in recent years amid fears of companies mishandling bags. In October, a Business Insider reporter wrote that packing a pair of AirTags in her suitcase gave her confidence while traveling to Europe for the first time. And in November, a passenger used an AirTag to track her bag's location in Jamaica after WestJet mishandled it on a domestic flight in Canada.
