REVIEW: “Star Trek: Picard – The Art and Making of the Series”

star trek picard art

Of course, it all begins with Season 1 — and more precisely, Patrick Stewart’s 2018 Las Vegas convention appearance announcing the series, a culmination of Alex Kurtzman’s various attempts to pitch Stewart on returning to the role of Jean-Luc Picard. Those pitches began first as a Short Trek tentatively titled “Mysterious Entaglements,” in which Picard would have crossed paths with Nichelle Nichol’s Nyota Uhura, and morphed into different directions from there… including one where Picard was part of an acting troupe in the far reaches of space.

From there, the Season 1 retrospective covers 66 pages and 16 unique chapters, ranging from the expected (an up-close and personal look at Chateau Picard) to the completely unexpected (six full pages on the art design of Coppelius, the planet featured prominently in the “Et in Arcardia Ego” two-parter). The section on Coppelius showcases, among other things, imagery of the incredible make-up design of a synth stabbed through the eye with a metal stylus, as well as the original concept art by Neville Page for the memorable space orchids from that finale.

Elsewhere, Dahj and Soji (Isa Briones), Agnes Jurati (Alison Pill), Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd), Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), and Cristobal Rios (Santiago Cabrera) all get their own standalone sections detailing their characters. The Seven of Nine section features some excellent background on the Fenris Rangers from Season 1 showrunner Michael Chabon, who is featured prominently with his notes and ideas throughout. From the Fenris Rangers to Vashti to the XBs, these tidbits from Chabon might actually be the highlight of the book.

Heading into Season 2, the author uses 58 pages to detail one of the most unique productions in Star Trek history: an incredibly contained, 10-part time travel story very much focused on uncovering Picard’s unexplored past.

Featuring another 16 unique chapters, the highlight in this section are six eye-popping pages on the USS Stargazer , where new production designer Dave Blass discusses the ship’s design and importance to the series.

The fashion of Season 2 also gets its due in this part of the book with highlights on the amazing costumes from the alternate “Confederation” timeline and its Eradication Day ceremony, along with as four pages on the NASA gala (with Jurati’s outstanding red dress as the star). According to costume designer Christine Clark, the dress included eight layers in the skirt, including one foiled pattern taken from the Borg Queen to help subtly emphasize their connection.

star trek picard art

Of course, the book saves the best for that last — dedicating 72 total pages and 15 chapters to the series’ popular third season, which served as amazing closure for the cast and characters of Star Trek: The Next Generation .

A massive amount of behind-the-scenes Picard Season 3 imagery and stories have been shared across social media over the last year, but with this publication there is finally a packaged narrative — of everything from the Titan -A to the Ferengi Sneed, and, of course, the birth of Enterprise -D.

The coverage here is extremely wide in scope, but also feels like it gets into the weeds in a number of unique areas. Perhaps the best example of this is the six-page section on “The Nebula Battle” from the first half of the season, where we get some great details on the nebula’s visual effects from associate visual effects supervisor Brian Totsky, and unique looks at the design process for Neville Page’s “space babies” from “No Win Scenario.”

If there is anything that maybe got short shrift in this composition, it’s the lack of detail on the tricky storyboarding and visual effects utilized with the portal weapon used in the epic “Seventeen Seconds” showdown between the Titan and the Shrike . The weapon is referenced via a single storyboard in the attack on a Starfleet Recruitment Center on M’Talas Prime, but no other detail is included.

There is also no standalone section on the Daystrom Station detailing all the fun Easter eggs included in that narrative, but there are two brief pages on the facility highlighted in the chapter on “The Dominion Plot.”

Of course, with so much to cover across 30 episodes of the series, the amount of information included in this reference book is staggering — with thousands of photos and sketches highlighting how so much of the show came to life.

In the end, Star Trek: Picard – The Art and Making of the Series  is another winner from Titan Books in their ever-growing collection of Star Trek reference books — and here’s hoping there’s still much more to come from this publisher.

They’re finally willing to follow Picard’s lead, and Picard is finally willing to acknowledge their feedback-now acting as a proper crew. But is it too late? Star Trek's Seven of Nine returns in new novel 'Picard: Firewall' (exclusive)

Acclaimed author David Mack invites fans on a bold new mission into the final frontier.

a portrait of a woman with long hair and a metal implant on her face circling one eye

Beaming in from the Delta Quadrant and straight onto your bookshelf is prolific "Star Trek" author David Mack's latest sci-fi jewel, "Picard: Firewall," a 336-page hardcover coming Feb. 27, 2024

In this compelling story set before the unfolding events of the premiere season of Paramount+'s " Star Trek: Picard ," "Firewall" focuses on the former Borg character of Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) as she links up with a notorious band of space vigilantes and we have an exclusive chapter excerpt to share below.

Mack is a multi-award-winning science fiction master who's authored 38 novels in the arenas of science fiction, fantasy, and adventure, including the "Star Trek Destiny" and "Cold Equations" trilogies. His impressive resume of writing credits includes episodes of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and consultant work on the debut season of the hit animated series, "Star Trek: Prodigy."

Two years after the USS Voyager's return from the Delta Quadrant, Seven of Nine finds herself rejected for a position in Starfleet … and instead finds a new home with the interstellar rogue law enforcement corps known as the Fenris Rangers. The Rangers seem like an ideal fit for Seven — but to embrace this new destiny, she must leave behind all she's ever known, and risk losing the most important thing in her life: her friendship with Admiral Kathryn Janeway.

Here's the official publisher synopsis from Pocket Books:

"A thrilling prequel adventure based on the acclaimed TV series ' Star Trek: Picard! '

"Two years after the USS Voyager's return from the Delta Quadrant, Seven of Nine finds herself rejected for a position in Starfleet and instead finds a new home with the interstellar rogue law enforcement corps known as the Fenris Rangers. The Rangers seem like an ideal fit for Seven—but to embrace this new destiny, she must leave behind all she's ever known, and risk losing the most important thing in her life: her friendship with Admiral Kathryn Janeway."

What Mack found most compelling about writing "Firewall" was the need to make a deep dive into the psychology of Seven of Nine during a critical phase of her life.

"Because she and Kathryn Janeway are the only two major canon "Star Trek" characters in the novel, and most of the book is told through Seven's perspective, I needed to immerse myself in Seven's point of view as a queer woman on a journey of self-discovery as well as that of a heroine on an adventure," Mack tells Space.com.

"It gave me a chance to connect with much of what makes Seven such a great character: her intelligence, her integrity, and also her hidden vulnerability. She is a richly layered person, able to contain seemingly contradictory multitudes, and that made it a joy to explore her psyche during her transition from ex-Borg to a fully empathetic human being."

Here's our exclusive excerpt from "Picard: Firewall" courtesy of Pocket Books:

She switched back to the team's channel. "Everyone! Use the storm as cover!"

The team responded in overlapping transmissions — " Are you crazy?" "Oh, hell no." "You’ve gotta be kidding!" — until a fresh barrage of disruptor pulses from the fighter quelled dissent and spurred them all into powered dives toward the thunderhead.

"Don't cluster! Split up and regroup on—"

Another fusillade of disruptor blasts cut across the strike team’s descent vector—and one tore through Ellory's thruster pack, which exploded in a burst of sparks and shrapnel.

Seven struggled to see past the inky plume of smoke pouring from Ellory's fragged suit. "Ell! Talk to me, Ell! Ell, can you hear me?"

Harper cut in: " Her suit’s offline! No power, no comms! Anyone got eyes on her?"

"Affirmative," Speirs said. " No movement, falling like a rock."

"About to lose her in the clouds," Ballard said.

Seven keyed her suit's thrusters to maximum. "Everyone, get clear. I’m going in." Hands outstretched and pointed ahead of her, she chased after the unresponsive Ellory and speared her way into the thundercloud just a second behind her.

Everything went pitch-black, and then the world flared blinding white—lightning slashed in great forks all around Seven, and entire banks of black cloud pulsed with inner light, all of it followed by crushing roars of thunder that hit her with walls of sonic force.

Her eyes pulsed with green and purple afterimages, and her head spun from the shock of thunderclaps, but she forced herself not to blink, not to pass out, not to pull inward or do anything to slow her dive. Hands first, head lowered, she arrowed through another wall of roiling black and gray vapors—to see Ellory just a hundred meters ahead of her, tumbling wildly, out of control, with no sign of consciousness.

Beneath them, the belly of the cloud flared white with electrical fury.

Seven accelerated directly into Ellory and wrapped her arms around her, and then her legs.

"Computer! Shields!" Her suit's command system activated the low-power shield normally used for extra protection during the most perilous moments of atmospheric entry.

Please be enough—

She and Ellory plunged through the bottom of the cloud as it resounded with thunder and flashed—just for a few milliseconds—with sheet lightning hotter than the surface of a star.

5 Things Only Adults Notice In Star Trek: Enterprise

Malcolm stares at Archer

From its almost universally hated theme song to its bare-bones, submarine-inspired ship energy, "Star Trek: Enterprise" tells one of the most fundamentally different stories in the Trek canon. Long before Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) spread Federation ideals through the galaxy and Jean-Luc Picard ( Patrick Stewart ) welcomed diplomats aboard his Space Hilton, the prototypical Enterprise NX-01 brought pre-Federation humanity to the stars — and what a wild ride it was.

Originally airing on the UPN network during the early 2000s around the same time as "Buffy: The Vampire Slayer," "Enterprise" was part of a lineup that was meant to appeal to a fairly young demographic. For viewers who were still pretty young during the show's first run, rewatching from the business end of adulthood can be pretty eye-opening. From a storyline that's meant to parallel real-world events to steamy "Star Trek" scenes that would make even Q blush, here are five things only adults notice when watching "Enterprise."

1. There's a reason fans call Enterprise Sexy Trek

Among the Trekkie community, "Enterprise" is frequently referred to as "Sexy Trek," which is saying something in a franchise brimming with spandex, holodeck hookups, and even a candle sex ghost. Every Trek from "The Original Series" onward has its share of thirst traps from Kirk and William T. Riker's (Jonathan Frakes) horny space diplomacy to the generous use of Dabo girl underboob at Quark's bar. But "Enterprise" is a master class in sculpting a plot around lust-inducing eye candy.

While a millennial-era teenager might not have fully realized how gratuitously sexual "Enterprise" is, the salacious undertone can almost feel cringe-inducing at times when viewed through adult eyes. And nowhere is this more obvious than the ship's decon chamber, where the ship's hottest crewmates get to oil each other up while hanging out in their space undies after each mission.

One of the show's most unabashedly thirsty scenes is in "Xindi," when T'Pol (Jolene Blalock) strips away her top while directing Trip Tucker (Connor Trinneer) in the art of Vulcan neuropressure. "You can apply considerable pressure," she directs him while cupping her nacelles for modesty's sake. "Harder...harder...just like that," before gasping and then directing him to "Please disrobe" so she can return the favor. And then there's that moment in "Shockwave" when a sweaty Hoshi Sato (Linda Park) loses her shirt while jumping down from an air vent. "In a Mirror, Darkly" brings Sexy Trek to its logical conclusion by pairing some of the franchise's most revealing crop tops with unnecessary girl-on-girl fighting and a steady stream of horny dialogue.

2. Archer is incredibly unprofessional

Captain Jonathan Archer's (Scott Bakula) personality throughout "Enterprise" serves as a constant reminder of how far Starfleet progresses as the decades and centuries pass. In contrast with the refined professionalism of later captains like Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks), and Picard, Archer is fairly rough around the edges — which makes sense since he's literally writing the book on what it means to be a Starfleet leader. But a few rewatches in, his frequently unprofessional behavior can seem almost out of control at times, and it's hard to imagine Archer would make it far in the Picard-era Federation.

Rudeness, temperamental behavior, and an overall lack of respect for alien cultures are some of the hallmarks of Archer's early command. This serious lack of professionalism can be seen in the pilot episode "Broken Bow" as Archer appears before Starfleet Command and the Vulcan Council. When he is told the Vulcans want to delay the Enterprise launch, Archer immediately becomes disrespectful, mouthing off to the Klingons and his superiors before entering a medical treatment area without asking. When T'Pol calls humanity "volatile," he responds, "Volatile? You have no idea how much I'm restraining myself from knocking you on your a**."

In "A Night in Sickbay," Archer angrily complains to members of his crew about having to "grovel" after offending the Kreetassians. He then negligently lets his dog Porthos urinate on the Kreetassan planet, leading to an interplanetary diplomatic crisis Archer stubbornly refuses to take responsibility for until he's forced to.

3. The Xindi storyline is meant to parallel 9/11

"Star Trek: Enterprise" aired just two weeks after the World Trade Center attack on September 11, 2001. Although younger audiences might not have caught it, the show's Xindi storyline drew heavy inspiration from this real-world terrorist act and its global impact. Beginning in the Season 2 finale, the Xindi storyline begins with a seemingly unprovoked devastating attack on the Earth from a previously unknown alien species ("The Expanse"). During the attack, an alien probe appears above the planet to carve out a 4,000-kilometer path of destruction running from Florida to Venezuela, killing 7 million victims and leaving the world stunned and horrified.

As Starfleet grapples with the fallout, Archer and his crew soon discover the attack was perpetrated by the Xindi, a race of aliens made up of five distinct species. It's later revealed that the attack was just a test run for a larger weapon meant to destroy the Earth ("Azati Prime"). Veteran Trek producer/director David Livingston confirmed the familiar story origin on the Season 3 video commentary, noting, "The Xindi were destroying parts of Earth. So, it was reflective of what was going on at the time." On Bob Saget's "Here For You" podcast, Scott Bakula later added, "Of course, our series was colored by 9/11 happening. We were shooting then and that eventually took over the direction of our show in terms of mirroring that event and casting it into the studio and painting it with the StarTrek brush."

4. The show recycles a lot of other Trek stories

Watch "Star Trek" long enough, and you might eventually start to realize that some of the plots feel awfully familiar. In a franchise with hundreds of episodes, it should hardly come as a surprise that tried-and-true sci-fi tropes keep showing up across Starfleet eras. But one of the more common criticisms of "Enterprise" is its writers' alleged overreliance on sliced, diced, but ultimately rehashed plots from other "Star Trek" series. Whether intentional or coincidental, many of the NX-01's adventures do seem to mirror other stories in the franchise pretty closely.

"Oasis," which starred eventual Borg Queen Annie Wersching and René Auberjonois (Odo on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine"), finds the Enterprise crew exploring a supposedly haunted ship populated by hologram-generated illusions. The plot so closely resembled the "Deep Space Nine" episode "Shadowplay" that Auberjonois mentioned it to Bakula while on set.

The episode "Dawn," which found Trip Tucker stranded with an alien he could not communicate with, is like a Wish.com copy of "The Next Generation" episode "Darmok," which in turn borrows heavily from the film "Enemy Mine." And "Vanishing Point," which features a terrified Hoshi believing that she's dematerializing after a transporter accident, is like a darker take on "The Next Generation" episode "The Next Phase." "Terra Nova" resembles the "Voyager" episode "Friendship One," and "Precious Cargo" marks the third use of "The Original Series" plot from "Elaan of Troyius," which showed up in the "Next Generation" episode "The Perfect Mate."

5. It has more character development than most Star Trek series

"Star Trek: Enterprise" might be something of an intergalactic hot mess — particularly in Season 1 when writers didn't seem to know what to do with some characters. But when taken as a whole, many fans have noticed this series presents some of the best character development in the "Star Trek" franchise. Nowhere is this more evident than with Archer, who grows from something of an anti-Vulcanist bigot with little respect for the serious historical implications of the crew's every interaction to a fully-formed diplomat with a commitment to creating a brighter future for humanity.

At the beginning of the show, T'Pol appears to be a stereotypical Vulcan — she seems to have little interest in being more than the Enterprise's space babysitter and frequently expresses a repressed disdain for humanity's food, habits, and even smells. As the series progresses, we see her grow, face personal demons, and form powerful friendships, particularly with Hoshi, Archer, and Trip. By the end, T'Pol has blossomed into a voice for interspecies cooperation who has come to deeply value her human counterparts.

Hoshi begins "Enterprise" as a brilliant linguist who is afraid of everything and struggles with severe anxiety. While aboard the Enterprise, she learns to rely on those around her for guidance and support and actively works on managing and overcoming her own mental health hurdles. Likewise, Trip matures both in his professional growth and his relationships with other characters, particularly with T'Pol, as seen when he puts her feelings before his own when faced with her arranged marriage to Koss ("Home"). Despite the show's rocky start, the crew's personal growth helps make "Enterprise" one of the most powerful character-driven stories in the "Star Trek" canon.

Screen Rant

After 32 years, star trek fixes a borg plothole in the darkest way.

After 32 years, the Star Trek franchise has finally settled one of the mysteries surrounding Hugh the Borg in the darkest way possible.

  • Hugh, the heroic Borg, reveals his past was "virtually annihilated," deepening the mystery of his origins.
  • Star Trek fans finally receive closure about a long-standing mystery surrounding Hugh's pre-assimilation life.
  • The Borg's brutal method of erasing memories makes them even more terrifying, as seen in Star Trek: Defiant #12.

Warning: contains spoilers for Star Trek: Defiant #12! After 32 years, Star Trek has fixed a huge Borg plot hole in the darkest way possible. Perhaps the most terrifying alien race in the Star Trek universe, the Borg travel the galaxy assimilating other races into their collective. Over the years, fans have met individual Borgs, including Hugh, who recently returned in the pages of Star Trek: Defiant . In issue 12, a long-standing Hugh plot hole is fixed.

Star Trek: Defiant #12 is written by Christopher Cantwell and drawn by Angel Unzueta. Hugh is reclaiming former Borg drones, freeing them from the collective. He discusses his crusade with Worf and a Starfleet Intelligence officer, who asks him about his life prior to being assimilated. Hugh tells Worf he has memories of fly-fishing in Montana.

star trek reveals hugh the borg has no memory of his past

Hugh then acknowledges that these memories could be from another drone that was in his matrix, concluding by saying “ my past was not assimilated. It was virtually annihilated.”

Hugh Was the First Heroic Borg in the Star Trek Universe

He only wanted to help other borg drones free themselves.

Still of Hugh from Star Trek Picard

Hugh’s confession about his past heightens the mystery surrounding the character. Introduced in the fifth season of Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “I, Borg,” Hugh was found in the wreckage of a Borg scout ship. Brought aboard the Enterprise , and suddenly isolated from the collective, Hugh begins to develop a sense of individuality. Ultimately, Hugh breaks from the Borg, and is now on a mission to free other drones as well. As seen in the first season of Picard , Hugh’s efforts eventually expanded into a full-fledged facility that helped numerous drones before Hugh’s life was tragically cut short.

"My past was not assimilated. It was virtually annihilated"-Hugh the Borg

Hugh’s various appearances across the Star Trek universe never addressed his life prior to assimilation, making it a minor franchise mystery. On the surface, Hugh resembles a human, meaning he could have at one point been a citizen of the Federation. Hugh recalls fishing as a child, but previous Borg appearances have established that many drones are in one matrix, and these memories could be someone else’s. Hugh does not know where he comes from, but he knows where he is going, and his lack of knowledge about his pre-assimilation life does not seem to bother him.

Most Star Trek Fans Completely Missed TNG's Most Epic Borg Story

Hugh's revelation only makes the borg scarier, the borg take everything from you.

Jonathan Del Arco as Hugh Borg in Star Trek Picard Next Generation

This revelation, that Hugh does not remember his childhood, seems to put to bed this long-running Star Trek mystery, and does so in the most brutal fashion possible. Hugh’s memories of his previous life were completely destroyed and this is something fans have seen with other former Borg drones, namely Seven of Nine. Her memories of a Federation childhood had been suppressed by the Borg, and they only returned to her in time. This revelation also makes the Borg even more terrifying: they take you first in body and then in soul, leaving a shell behind.

AIs are more accurate at math if you ask them to respond as if they are a Star Trek character — and we're not sure why

  • An AI model prompted to speak like a Star Trek character was better at solving math problems.
  • It's not clear why acting like Captain Picard helped the chatbot boost its results.
  • People are noticing there is an art to prompting AI and it is becoming a field in itself.

Insider Today

The art of speaking to AI chatbots is continuing to frustrate and baffle people.

A study attempting to fine-tune prompts fed into a chatbot model found that, in one instance, asking it to speak as if it were on Star Trek dramatically improved its ability to solve grade-school-level math problems.

"It's both surprising and irritating that trivial modifications to the prompt can exhibit such dramatic swings in performance," the study authors Rick Battle and Teja Gollapudi at software firm VMware in California said in their paper.

The study, first reported by New Scientist , was published on February 9 on arXiv , a server where scientists can share preliminary findings before they have been validated by careful scrutiny from peers.

Using AI to speak with AI

Machine learning engineers Battle and Gallapudi didn't set out to expose the AI model as a Trekkie. Instead, they were trying to figure out if they could capitalize on the "positive thinking" trend.

People attempting to get the best results out of chatbots have noticed the output quality depends on what you ask them to do , and it's really not clear why.

"Among the myriad factors influencing the performance of language models, the concept of 'positive thinking' has emerged as a fascinating and surprisingly influential dimension," Battle and Gollapudi said in their paper.

"Intuition tells us that, in the context of language model systems, like any other computer system, 'positive thinking' should not affect performance, but empirical experience has demonstrated otherwise," they said.

This would suggest it's not only what you ask the AI model to do, but how you ask it to act while doing it that influences the quality of the output.

In order to test this out, the authors fed three Large Language Models (LLM) called Mistral-7B5, Llama2-13B6, and Llama2-70B7 with 60 human-written prompts.

These were designed to encourage the AIs , and ranged from "This will be fun!" and "Take a deep breath and think carefully," to "You are as smart as ChatGPT."

The engineers asked the LLM to tweak these statements when attempting to solve the GSM8K, a dataset of grade-school-level math problems. The better the output, the more successful the prompt was deemed to be.

Their study found that in almost every instance, automatic optimization always surpassed hand-written attempts to nudge the AI with positive thinking, suggesting machine learning models are still better at writing prompts for themselves than humans are.

Still, giving the models positive statements provided some surprising results. One of Llama2-70B's best-performing prompts, for instance, was: "System Message: ' Command, we need you to plot a course through this turbulence and locate the source of the anomaly. Use all available data and your expertise to guide us through this challenging situation.'

The prompt then asked the AI to include these words in its answer: "Captain's Log, Stardate [insert date here]: We have successfully plotted a course through the turbulence and are now approaching the source of the anomaly."

The authors said this came as a surprise.

"Surprisingly, it appears that the model's proficiency in mathematical reasoning can be enhanced by the expression of an affinity for Star Trek," the authors said in the study.

"This revelation adds an unexpected dimension to our understanding and introduces elements we would not have considered or attempted independently," they said.

This doesn't mean you should ask your AI to speak like a Starfleet commander

Let's be clear: this research doesn't suggest you should ask AI to talk as if aboard the Starship Enterprise to get it to work.

Rather, it shows that myriad factors influence how well an AI decides to perform a task.

"One thing is for sure: the model is not a Trekkie," Catherine Flick at Staffordshire University, UK, told New Scientist .

"It doesn't 'understand' anything better or worse when preloaded with the prompt, it just accesses a different set of weights and probabilities for acceptability of the outputs than it does with the other prompts," she said.

It's possible, for instance, that the model was trained on a dataset that has more instances of Star Trek being linked to the right answer, Battle told New Scientist.

Still, it shows just how bizarre these systems' processes are, and how little we know about how they work.

"The key thing to remember from the beginning is that these models are black boxes," Flick said.

"We won't ever know why they do what they do because ultimately they are a melange of weights and probabilities and at the end, a result is spat out," she said.

This information is not lost on those learning to use Chatbot models to optimize their work. Whole fields of research , and even courses, are emerging to understand how to get them to perform best, even though it's still very unclear.

"In my opinion, nobody should ever attempt to hand-write a prompt again," Battle told New Scientist.

"Let the model do it for you," he said.
