My experience with this tour has been great! We have covered all the main sights to see in Egypt. Which are even better in person than I’d imagined. Khaled our tour guide is very knowledgable and has made our trip very memorable and fun . I especially enjoyed that Khaled explained the history of ancient Egypt in great detail but he also showed us modern Egypt. Visiting Egypt is definitely worth it. I will remember this trip for life.

Reviews of river cruise tours from luxor to aswan.

Tour Radar communicated with us clearly through email and WhatsApp. They kept us informed about pick up details and tour arrangements. Our guide, Sayed, was very knowledgeable and pointed out many interesting facts and information. He was prepared to change our itinerary when at times we were tired, and was most concerned about our welfare. Following conversation with non native English speakers can at times be difficult but he was able nonetheless to make our tour enjoyable
We had a great time on the cruise and stopped off at some of the most amazing sites along the way. Our guide Khaled was amazing and so knowledgeable about any questions we had along the way. It’s a great way to see the variety of sceneries of Egypt.
Spectacular Experience in Egypt with nile cruise from luxor for 4 nights with egyptology travel, totally recommend , every thing was wonderful.

Fully recommend Tripianto to plan your vacation. Ask Tripianto for the different guides available. We had a disparity in the quality of the guides. In particular we had an excellent guide- Azmy Salama and a extremely good guide Hosman Kemal. The guide for Luxor to Aswan was not that good. Read more Written January 22, 2024
  • 150kellyq 0 contributions Best way to see Giza/Cairo if short on time Since I was doing some diving in the Red Sea at Sharm El Sheikh, I didn't want to loose a day of diving because I'd have to deco before flying, so this was a nice option for me to take a private car to Cairo so I could also see the pyramids as well before starting my 3 flights home super early the next morning. After a bad experience with another company, I booked with this company and within minutes of booking I heard from the company. So communication was great from the start. The car was actually a private car, not a mini van or shuttle, so a little tricky to catch some Zzzzzz's laying down in the back seat. The driver was very nice, spoke okay English, but he was a smoker. Even though he didn't smoke while he was driving, he did stop a few times for smoke breaks. Unfortunately, smoking is very common here, which is hard for folks that are not fans of cigarette smoke/smell. After arriving to Cairo, was transferred to another vehicle under the freeway which was a little sketchy. New driver was nice but didn't speak a lot of English. We waited for the tour guide Donny there. After he arrived, I asked what the game plan was and I'd prefer that we got the outdoor stuff out of the way early to beat the heat of the day. He mentioned he actually lives closer to the Pyramids of Giza than the Egypt Museum where I was waiting by. I mentioned, perhaps they should ask people before hand on what they'd want to do first. So off to the Pyramids. Donny was very knowledgeable about the locations we visited and was comfortable chatting about various other topics. His English was very good, which made communicating easy. Having a private tour is always the way to go in my opinion, since they know the ins and outs of all of the locations and takes the stress of having to figure things out of the equation. I'd highly recommend if you have a limited time in Cairo/Giza. Read more Written September 18, 2023

Best of Luxor and Aswan: Short Tour Planner

Best of Luxor and Aswan: Short Tour Planner

Aside from Cairo, Luxor and Aswan are the two most attractive cities in Egypt with numerous historical sites featuring monuments from over 4,000 years ago. If you are may need to decide between Luxor and Aswan (due to limited travel time), and are wondering which would be the best city to visit, help is at hand.

Here is a quick comparison of the best both places have to offer so that you can make an informed decision. Don't want the hassle of researching and comparing? Skip to the end and share your interests with us, and we will do our best to assist you with planning your trip.

Before making a decision, see a quick overview of what awaits in Luxor and Aswan.

Best of Luxor

Luxor is the perfect destination for history lovers, as it has several ruins, tombs, temples, and archeological museums. Luxor is often called the world's open-air museum due to its massive collection of ancient temples and monuments. Luxor is built atop an ancient city that the Greeks called Thebes.

The most popular attractions in Luxor are the majestic Karnak temple complex and the Valley of the Kings. Travelers can experience the thrill of a hot air balloon ride and float over the valley at sunrise to appreciate the massive scale of the grand layout and the architectural prowess of the ancient Egyptians. There are many other monuments, temples, and ruins to see, reminiscent of the elegance and richness of the ancient Egyptians.

Please note that there are no shuttle buses in most of the temple complexes. Therefore, comfortable walking shoes are a must. Visitors should also carry sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats to protect themselves from the scorching sun.

There's no better place to spend a few days immersing yourself in the wonders of ancient Egypt.

Best of Aswan

Like Luxor, Aswan has countless ruins from the time of the ancient Egyptians. However, it has a more relaxed and tranquil vibe, with serene boat rides on the River Nile, palm-studded shorelines, authentic souks (bazaars), and picturesque sites. You can visit an exotic, traditional Nubian village (with African architectural and cultural elements, which stand out in sharp contrast with the surrounding Egyptian style and culture). Take a tour of the Daraw Camel Market, which is dedicated entirely to the trading of camels. Marvel at the engineering behind Aswan High Dam, which put an end to the cycle of flood and drought in the Nile River region.

The most famous site in Aswan is Abu Simbel, which is about a 3-hour drive from downtown. There are flights, too, which operate from Aswan to Abu Simbel, so travelers don't have to wake up early and spend 6 hours on the road, back and forth.

However, the most luxurious way to reach Abu Simbel is on a Nile cruise. Alternatively, visitors can hire a felucca (the traditional local-style boat) and enjoy the peaceful journey. The water transportation system in Aswan is highly developed compared to other destinations in Egypt.

Luxor or Aswan: Which One Suits You Most?

After reading the brief introduction above, you would have probably made your choice. If not, we have prepared a quick comparison list to make it easier for you.

Visit Both If Time Permits

Both Luxor and Aswan are cities in Upper Egypt, so traveling between them is quite quick. They are home to many ancient Egyptian temples that date back to about 4,000 years ago. Luxor has almost one-third of the ancient monuments in the world. As for Aswan, the locals call it the "Egyptian Paradise".

Photographers and travelers who enjoy ancient Egyptian history, culture, and architecture won't regret visiting both Luxor and Aswan for the ancient marvels that they have to offer.

The Nile Cruise between Luxor and Aswan

If you choose to visit both the cities, there are multiple ways to travel between them: domestic flights, by road, or a relaxing cruise on the Nile.

Typically, the upstream cruise (from Luxor to Aswan) takes 5 days, and the downstream one takes a day less (4 days). Of course, you can opt for a round-trip cruise (starting either at Luxor or Aswan and back to the same city).

During the cruise, you can escape the hassle of navigating through city traffic, do shore excursions (visit the attractions between cities) during the day, enjoy the tranquility of the surroundings, witness golden sunsets (perhaps sunrises), and spend the night on the cruise. There are dance shows and banquets on board that will keep you engaged all the way to your destination.

Need a Local Expert?

Driving Between Aswan and Luxor: How to Visit Kom Ombo, Edfu & Esna

Julie Last updated: January 26, 2024 Egypt 26 Comments

Kom Ombo Edfu Drive Aswan and Luxor

There are several ways to travel between Aswan and Luxor. Cruising the Nile River is the most popular option, but you can also drive or take the train between these two cities. If you choose to drive between Aswan and Luxor, you have the option to add on three important sites: Kom Ombo, Edfu and Esna.

It takes just a few hours to drive between Aswan and Luxor. But if you have a full day to spare, and if you want to visit several more of Egypt’s amazing temples, it is very easy to turn the drive into a sightseeing road trip.

In this article, learn what it is like to drive between Aswan and Luxor and how to visit Kom Ombo, Edfu, and Esna along the way.

Table of Contents

Aswan and Luxor Road Trip

Overview of the drive.

Length of Time: 9.5 hours (includes time to visit all three temples) Driving Distance: 245 km, roughly 5.75 hours of driving

Aswan to Luxor Map Egypt

If you were to drive directly between Aswan and Luxor, without time for stops, it takes just over 3 hours, if you take the highway. By “scenic route,” the rural roads along the east bank of the Nile River, it takes four and a half hours. Add in the extra driving in each city to get to the temples and you are looking at almost six hours of driving time.

There are three important temples and historical sites to visit on the drive, in Esna, Edfu, and Kom Ombo. With these three stops, it takes about 9 and a half hours to travel from Aswan to Luxor.

For this road trip, we will start in Aswan and end in Luxor (since that is the way that I have it written in our 10 Day Egypt Itinerary ). However, it can easily be done in the opposite direction (this is how we did it).

Temple of Kom Ombo

Driving Distance and Time: 47 km, 1 hour

Kom Ombo sits just a short distance north of Aswan. In about one hour you can be standing inside the temple.

The Temple of Kom Ombo is a double temple that was constructed for two sets of gods. One half of the complex is dedicated to Sobek, the crocodile-headed god who is associated with fertility of the land along the Nile River. The other half is dedicated to Horus, the falcon-headed god.

Interesting Facts About the Temple of Kom Ombo:

  • This temple was constructed during the Ptolemaic Period, between 108 to 47 BC.
  • Some of the engravings are the first representations of surgical instruments.
  • Much of the temple was destroyed by earthquakes, floods, and builders who used the stones for other buildings.

Kom Ombo Temple

Next to the Temple of Kom Ombo is the Crocodile Museum , where you can see the mummies of different sized crocodiles that were discovered around the temple (it is estimated that 300 crocodile mummies were discovered in this area).

Temple of Horus at Edfu

Driving Distance and Time (Temple of Kom Ombo to the Temple of Horus): 70 km, 1.75 hours

The Temple of Horus is the largest temple dedicated to the god Horus. It was built in the Ptolemaic period between 237 and 57 BC.

This is a magnificent temple. It is in excellent condition, despite being over 2,000 years old (although it is relatively young by Egyptian standards). The first pylon is in almost perfect condition and you really get an idea of how these temples looked when they were first constructed.

Temple of Edfu

In the enormous courtyard, look for the black granite statue of Horus, whom this temple is dedicated to.

Temple of Horus at Edfu

Beyond the courtyard sits a hypostyle hall and several antechambers. Don’t miss the Sanctuary, where a golden statue of Horus once sat on a granite shrine.

High Relief Edfu Temple

Temple of Khnum in Esna

Driving Distance and Time (From the Temple of Horus to the Temple of Khnum): 64 km, 1.5 hours

The temple in Esna is dedicated to the god Khnum, his consorts Menhit and Nebtu, their son, Heka, and the goddess Neith. Khnum is one of the earliest-known Egyptian deities, a ram-headed god who molds people out of clay from the Nile River on a potter’s wheel.

The temple sits 9 meters below street level. Over several millennia and the repeated flooding of the Nile River, the city slowly built up around this temple.

Esna Egypt

To drive from Esna to Luxor, it is a 64 km drive that takes 1.5 hours.

Is it Worth It to Visit All Three Temples?

This can be a long day, and with the number of tombs and temples you will visit in Aswan and Luxor, you may be wondering if it is worth it to visit all three of these temples.

Kom Ombo and Edfu are absolutely worth it. Kom Ombo is unique in that it is a double temple and it has a beautiful setting right on the Nile River. Edfu was my favorite of the three. It is in excellent condition and seeing that first pylon is incredible.

The Temple of Khnum in Esna is just OK. If you were to take one off of the list, this would be the one. However, it is still worth your time, especially since you drive right past it. While you are in the area, why not see one more temple? 🙂

What is it Like on the Roads between Aswan and Luxor?

If you plan to visit Kom Ombo, Edfu, and Esna, you will drive on the rural roads on the east bank of the Nile River.

This narrow, two-lane road travels parallel to the Nile River. The side of the road closest to the Nile River is brilliantly green and filled with fields of sugarcane and date palms. This green, fertile land abruptly transitions into a barren, dusty desert, not far from the river and the road you will be driving along.

On the drive, you will pass through small towns and numerous police checkpoints. You will share the road with all types of vehicles…black and yellow tuk-tuks, tractor trailers, people on motorbikes without helmets, giant tractors covered in colorful artwork, taxi trucks filled with people, cars, police vehicles, and tourist vans. Donkeys pull carts loaded down with sugarcane, lemons, bananas, and the biggest cauliflower I have ever seen.

Speed bumps punctuate the road every 100 to 200 meters in some places, to keep speeds low. That’s a good thing, since there are so many types of vehicles on this road, all traveling at different speeds.

I imagine that cruising on the Nile River is quiet, tranquil experience (unlike this drive). This drive is a chaotic, jarring experience, but if you want a glimpse at the way of life in this part of Egypt, skip the cruise and go by car.

Egypt Road

Can You Drive Between Luxor and Aswan Independently?

Yes, you can rent a car and drive between Luxor and Aswan on your own, but we don’t recommend it.

The roads in Egypt are congested and chaotic. Traffic rules are different in Egypt than in places like the United States and Europe, and at times, it almost seems as if there are no rules.

There is a different flow and rhythm to the traffic in Egypt, and if you are not accustomed to it, driving can be stressful and difficult.

On the rural roads, there are security checkpoints and you need to be able to effectively communicate with the officers. We had a driver and a guide. Our guide conversed with the officers at these checkpoints in Arabic. It did not seem as if the police at these checkpoints spoke much English, so if you are on your own, getting through these checkpoints would be much more stressful than if you had a guide and driver.

Finally, the rural roads are just as crazy as the city roads, but in a different way. Congestion is lower but speeds are higher. These two-lane roads are treated as three lane roads. The center of the road is the passing lane, for both directions of traffic. That means you will play a lot of games of “chicken” with the oncoming cars. Meanwhile, you or your driver are keeping a lookout for donkeys, tuk-tuks, motorbikes, tractor trailers, and pedestrians.

We highly recommend hiring a driver, rather than renting a car, for your trip to Egypt.

How to Get from Aswan to Luxor

The best way to get from Aswan to Luxor is to hire a driver. You can either hire a taxi, hire a private driver through your hotel, join a small group tour, or hire a private driver with a guide.

Taxi’s will be cheaper than arranging a driver through your hotel. Just be aware that your driver may not speak English and I have read other’s trip reports about taxis breaking down during the drive. Prices start around 1000 EGP (about $35 USD) but the price you pay will depend on the driver and your negotiating skills.

To arrange a driver through your hotel, prices can start at 1,500 EGP (about $50 USD).

We hired Egypt Tailor Made, not only for our drive between Luxor and Aswan, but also for the remainder of our time in Egypt.

Note: You also have the option to take the train, but in each town, you will also have to hire a taxi to get to and from the train station, so hiring a driver is more convenient.

If you have any questions about the drive from Aswan to Luxor, or if you want to share your experience, let us know in the comment section below.

I cannot decide yet what I should remove from my plan between Aswan, Luxor, and Abu Simbel. 1st: arrive Cairo. My flight arrives at 10 AM. Museum in the afternoon 2nd: Pyramid day and stay at Cairo 3rd: fly from Cairo, expected to arrive at Aswan at about 9 AM 4th: Aswan drives to Luxor: travel for the whole day or half day in Aswan then direct drive for 3hr to Luxor? 5th: Luxor 6th: Luxor and fly back to Cairo in the evening. My flight back from Cairo is about 2 AM on the 7th. Please kindly advise.

Hello Ann. Since you have one full day in Aswan, on your 4th day, you can turn it into a full driving day, visiting the sights in between Aswan and Luxor. On your 5th day, visit the West Bank of Luxor and on your 6th day, visit the sights on the East Bank, since it is a lighter day and gives you time to get to the airport in the evening. I think it is too hard to fit in Abu Simbel, which is why I chose the full day of driving to Luxor. Have a great time in Egypt! Cheers, Julie

Thank you for your comment. I will adjust as you suggest.
