Brooks Koepka, Michael Block and frost: How we'll remember a spectacular PGA Championship

rochester ny pga tour

There is a brick wall on the back side of the Oak Hill Country Club clubhouse that prominently displays the names of those who have won the major tournaments at one of America’s most prominent courses .

It includes the likes of all-time greats such as Cary Middlecoff, and Lee Trevino, and Jack Nicklaus, and Curtis Strange , and Jay Haas, and yes, the European Ryder Cup . And now, it will include Brooks Koepka who has become one of the greatest major championship competitors of this era.

He’s probably not going to match Nicklaus who won a record 18 majors - not even Tiger Woods could do that. But after winning the PGA Championship on the beefed up East Course with a superb final-round of 67 that gave him a 72-hole score of 9-under-par 271, he now has five majors.

What does five mean? Well, he is one of only 20 men in the history of a game that has been played for more than a century and a half to do that. Yes, 20..

Simply incredible, and yes, his name will fit fabulously on that Wall of Fame .

“Yeah, it’s crazy,” he said Sunday night. “I try not to think of it right now. I mean, I do care about it. It’s just tough to really grasp the situation kind of while you’re still in it, I think. When I’m retired and I can look back with Jena and my son and kind of reflect on all that stuff, that will be truly special, but right now I’m trying to collect as many of these things as I can. We’ll see how it goes.”

More: How Brooks Koepka overcame injuries, thoughts of retirement to capture PGA Championship

More: Brooks Koepka masters Oak Hill to win 2023 PGA Championship for 5th major title

Koepka put on a memorable performance, yet he was only a part of a fantastic week at a club that hosts major championships like no other, in a community that loves and supports golf like no other.

Here are some of the other things that we will remember from the 2023 PGA Championship:

PGA club pro Michael Block was a blast

There was no one - and I repeat no one, maybe not even Koepka - who enjoyed himself more than Block, one of 20 PGA of America club pros who qualified to play in the tournament.

The PGA Championship is the only major comprised 100% of pros. There are the world famous pros of the PGA Tour and other tours, and then there are the club pros who qualify based on their finish in the national club pro championship. The other majors all have a certain number of amateurs in the field, meaning the PGA always has the deepest and strongest field.

Block was the only club pro to make the cut, and not only that, he played Sunday in the fourth-to-last twosome with Rory McIlroy . Talk about heady stuff. He shot three straight 70s to get there, and then it only got more surreal on Sunday.

Block continued to hang in there, going stroke for stroke with McIlroy, and then he set Oak Hill ablaze when he made a hole-in-one at the 15th hole , the ball flying straight into the cup. It was the shot of the tournament, and if the head pro at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo, California wasn’t already the most popular player on the course, or in Rochester , or in the golf world, he was then.

“This week’s been absolutely a dream,” he said. “I didn’t know it was going to happen, but I knew if I just played my darned game right, that I could do this. I always knew it.”

Of course, in his dreams, he was doing this going head to head with Tiger Woods. But Rory McIlroy was a perfectly suitable substitute.

“I always saw myself coming down the stretch with Tiger Woods,” he said with that smile that we saw all week. “I was like, ‘I’m going to do it, even if I’m 45 or whatever it is, I’m going to come down the stretch at an event with Tiger.’

“It just happened to be that I was in the 2023 PGA Championship at Oak Hill, and I had Rory McIlroy in my group. I wasn’t coming down the stretch to win, but at the same time, Sunday at a major with the crowd here at Rochester was unreal.”

Masters champion Jon Rahm spent some time with CBS after his round concluded Sunday, and he was told that Block had said because he’s so busy teaching at his club, he only hits about one bucket of balls per week to practice. “And how many is he beating me by,” Rahm said. Rahm is a good dude and I wish he had contended here , but his first-round 76 killed him.

It never fails: Weather is always an issue

I’ve covered every major event at Oak Hill since the 1989 U.S. Open - that’s eight if you’re counting at home - and all have been impacted by weather in one way or another. Really, if it’s a big event at Oak Hill, you just know going into it that Mother Nature is going to make her presence felt.

Early in the week, though it was chilly in the morning, the practice rounds went off beautifully, but Thursday’s first round was delayed nearly two hours because of frost and the round couldn’t be completed .

And then Saturday’s third round , it had to be pretty a miserable experience if you were out there as it rained for almost the entire day. I felt bad for those who had tickets for only Saturday because that couldn’t have been too much fun battling the weather and the huge crowds.

However, no one should lament the fact that the PGA of America moved the PGA Championship to August because let’s remember, it rains in August, too. It’s Rochester. It can rain at any time of the year, even in the winter.

The renovated East Course was sublime

I really didn’t think it was possible to make Oak Hill’s championship course better, but architect Andrew Green and all that were responsible for the massive makeover certainly succeeded, and almost every player who was asked to comment agreed.

Phil Mickelson, who had a very tough week shooting 10-over 290, certainly wasn’t bitter and he summed up the course best. “It’s just a good, hard, fair test,” said the winner of six major championships. “I think it’s an incredible test. It’s just a great golf course and a great place to play. I really enjoy it.”

These are the best players in the world and by week’s end there were only 11 who finished under par. Through three rounds there were only 50 rounds of 69 or better, the lowest number of sub-par rounds posted through round three of a PGA Championship since 2008 at Oakland Hills (23).

Even with improved conditions for scoring Sunday which saw 28 players shoot in the 60s, the course more than held its own.

As of now the next major event scheduled here is the 2027 U.S. Amateur. But it seems almost impossible that the PGA of America wouldn’t get a new contract signed with Oak Hill for another PGA Championship in the next decade. They’ve been here in 2003, 2013, and 2023. Is this a trend for 2033? It should be, May dates be damned.

Tom Kim’s dive into Allen’s Creek

The South Korean has raised a lot of eyebrows because he turned pro when he was just 16 years old in 2018 and by 2021-22 he was the leading money winner on the Asian Tour, he finished third at the 2022 Scottish Open, and then tied for 47th in the 2022 British Open.

That gained him status on the PGA Tour, and when he won the 2022 Wyndham Championship in Greensboro - the first player born after 2000 to win a Tour event - he earned full exempt status and is now considered a future star.

Unfortunately for Kim, his play is not what we will remember as he shot 8-over 148 and missed the cut. Very late on Thursday, Kim hit his ball into Allen’s Creek to the right of the sixth fairway. That hole was a nightmare for every player in the field, but it was worse for him. He tried to find the ball, slipped, and fell into the muck and mud and water .

“It was just in the mud over there, and if I was able to find it and I had a good enough lie I was thinking I could chip it over there,” he told ESPN on its broadcast. It’s a major championship. I’m fighting for every single stroke I have.”

The shot of him covered in the mud and then trying to wash it off was priceless. To his credit he regrouped and saved a bogey.

Things were definitely a bit pricey

Well, that’s a sign of the times, right? Tickets for the event were substantially more expensive than 2013, though that certainly didn’t seem to faze anyone. These were the largest crowds we’ve ever seen at Oak Hill, mainly because there is so much more room to move around the property with so many trees gone.

I can’t even imagine how much the merchandise tent made in sales. I know I dropped some money in there this week and I can tell you, it was costly.

Food and beverage were also ridiculous , but hey, they’ve got you on a golf course, and if you left the course, you couldn’t return. If you’re hungry or thirsty, you have no choice.

One fan caught a nice break, though. Joel Dahmen hit a wayward shot during a practice round that hit a spectator. After making sure the person was OK, Dahmen handed over a $100 bill and said, “I got your beers today.” Whatever pain felt, that was worth it.

It was all worth it. It was a spectacular week at Oak Hill, and it sure seemed like a good time was had by all.

‘Sunday crowds on Monday’: Oak Hill Country Club buzzing ahead of PGA Championship

The small Western New York city of Rochester has a big time feel to it this week amidst the 105th PGA Championship.

2023 PGA Championship - Preview Day Two

Rochester, New York is a minor league town, pure and simple.

It is the 77th-largest television market in the country, with the local professional teams— the Bills and the Sabres—residing down the New York Thruway in Buffalo.

So when a big event such as the PGA Championship comes to Rochester, a palpable buzz percolates.

“Everyone is off the charts excited,” said Ron Pluta, the general chairman of the 2023 PGA Championship. “We had Sunday crowds on a Monday! There are two to three people deep around the 14th tee for the first day of practice rounds; it’s unbelievable!”

Rochester is no stranger to hosting major championship golf, as Oak Hill will host its fourth PGA Championship this week, with the last one occurring in 2013.

PGA Championship - Final Round

Oak Hill’s East Course is the only course in the country to host a PGA Championship, U.S. Open , Senior PGA Championship, Senior U.S. Open, U.S. Amateur, and the bi-annual Ryder Cup .

Even then, these major golf events only come to the area every so often—typically once a decade. Nevertheless, the golfing world will return to Oak Hill in 2027 when the East and West Courses host the U.S. Amateur.

Since the last time Oak Hill hosted an event such as this, the game’s popularity was not where it is today. The pandemic helped popularize golf among all age groups, especially younger individuals.

“I am super pumped,” said Nick Lapp, a Rochester native who graduated from St. Bonaventure University during the pandemic. “Having the world’s best golfers come back to Rochester around the time my interest in golf is at its peak is a perfect scenario. I missed the 2013 PGA, so attending my first PGA event, let alone a major, in the city I was born and raised, is beyond exciting.”

“I may not stop smiling all week,” he added.

More than 225,000 excited fans plan on attending the PGA Championship this week, with roughly 88,000 coming in from out of town.

“Beyond excited to attend my first ever professional golf event this week,” said Greg Hausler, who is traveling to Rochester from Boston for the PGA. “Between the history of Oak Hill, a tight FedEx Cup race, the inherent drama of the LIV golfers’ presence in the field, and of course, the famous garbage plates and chicken wings of Rochester, the energy is undoubtedly palpable.”

Updated - 9:07 p.m. ET, Thursday: The first round of the PGA Championship was delayed at 8:30 p.m. Thursday due to darkness. Play will resume Friday morning with 30 players still on the course, all of whom have five or fewer holes remaining in their round.

The first round was delayed nearly two hours because of frost Thursday morning as temperatures dipped into the low 30s.

A similar fate will be avoided Friday, as the low temperature is forecast to be 51 degrees. The second round is expected to start as scheduled at 7 a.m. and to be completed on Friday.

Eric Cole, a 34-year-old PGA TOUR rookie playing his second major, was 5 under par and atop the leaderboard when play was called Thursday. He will complete the final four holes of his opening round Friday morning.

Update - 7:32 a.m. ET, Thursday : Practice facilities will open at 7:35 a.m., and the first tee time off No. 1 will be 8:50 a.m. Round 1 starting times will be delayed by 1 hour, 50 minutes in total.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The start of the 105th PGA Championship has been delayed due to frost.

The PGA Championship, contested at Oak Hill Country Club’s East Course, was scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. ET Thursday. Temperatures in western New York dropped toward 30 degrees overnight, leading to frost on the ground. All practice facilities and the golf course were closed Thursday morning to protect the playing surfaces.

The PGA of America did not announce when play would begin, only that tee times would start 75 minutes after practice facilities open.

Shaun Micheel, winner of the 2003 PGA Championship at Oak Hill, will hit the opening tee shot when play begins. Micheel will compete in the first group off No. 1 tee alongside reigning PGA Professional Championship winner Braden Shattuck and reigning Senior PGA Championship winner Steven Alker.

This marks the fourth PGA Championship contested at Oak Hill, but the first contested in May. The previous three PGAs at Oak Hill (1980, 2003, 2013) were all played in August.

PGA Championship: Players and storylines to watch this week

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- This week, Oak Hill Country Club is hosting the PGA Championship for the fourth time.

It will be the first since the East Course underwent a thorough restoration in 2019. Each of the 18 greens and every bunker were rebuilt. The course is also about 231 yards longer after new back tees were added.

"It's hard. It's long," Kevin Kisner said. "The rough is thick. It's windy. What else do you want to know? It's a great course. It's cool but it's hard."

Oak Hill boasts one of the most difficult closing two-hole stretches of any major championship venue. According to ESPN Stats & Information research, the par-4, 502-yard 17th hole was the most difficult hole in each of the past three majors played at Oak Hill (1989 U.S. Open, 2003 PGA Championship and 2013 PGA Championship). The par-4, 497-yard 18th isn't much easier, especially coming down the stretch in the final round.

"I like it," defending PGA champion Justin Thomas said. "I love old-school golf courses. I think they can create a lot of definition to holes. It just seems like nowadays you can't really please anybody. It's like if it's tree-lined, they can't get away from the old school. But then take the trees away, it's a bomber's paradise, hit it wherever you want. It's hard to please everybody in that aspect. But it is very tough."

Here are the top storylines to watch at the 105th PGA Championship this week:

Spieth goes for career Grand Slam

Jordan Spieth pulled out of last week's AT&T Byron Nelson because of a left wrist injury. He wrote in a statement on Twitter that doctors prescribed rest and little motion.

If Spieth tees it up Thursday, he would be making a seventh attempt at completing the career Grand Slam. He remained in the PGA Championship field Monday. Another good sign: His caddie, Michael Greller, was on a commercial flight from Atlanta to Rochester earlier in the day. Spieth wasn't seen on the East Course on Monday.

Spieth would become only the sixth player to complete the career Grand Slam in the Masters era, joining Jack Nicklaus , Tiger Woods , Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Gene Sarazen.

Thomas' defense

When Thomas picked up his second major title by winning the PGA Championship for the second time at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma, last year, it seemed like the floodgates might open up for him.

There would be no more questions about his five-year drought without a major title after he overcame a record 7-shot deficit in the final round to defeat Will Zalatoris in a playoff. With Jim "Bones" Mackay on his bag, it seemed like JT was about to take off.

Thomas didn't win again last year, however, and his form hasn't been great for much of this season, either. He has just two top-10 finishes in 11 starts on tour. In March, he fell out of the top 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking and then missed the cut at the Masters. He's currently ranked 13th in the world.

Thomas said Monday that he feels he finally started to turn the corner at the Wells Fargo Championship two weeks ago.

"I felt like I showed a lot of really good signs in Charlotte," Thomas said. "I think Saturday was a great example. It just was a round where I didn't really have very much. I felt like I left a couple shots out there putting-wise and just wasn't sharp.

"I was hitting a lot of very poor wedges and irons. I birdied two of the last four holes and salvaged an under-par round on a tough golf course. Bones and I said on [the] 18 green, 'This is the stuff that we haven't been doing this year.'"

LIV Golf League out in force

There are 17 players from the LIV Golf League in the PGA Championship field, including past champions Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson .

There were more than twice as many LIV Golf players in the PGA Championship field (37) at Southern Hills.

At the Masters in April, the first major of the season, Koepka and Mickelson tied for second at 8 under, 4 strokes behind Jon Rahm .

Mickelson, 52, became the oldest player to finish in the top five at the Masters, and it was the lowest round in Masters history by a player age 50 or older. Two years ago at 50 at the 2021 PGA Championship at Kiawah Island in South Carolina, he became the oldest man to win a major.

Koepka has already won the PGA Championship twice, at Bellerive Country Club outside St. Louis in 2018 and Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York, the next year.

Rahm's reign

It's already been a remarkable run for Rahm, who has six worldwide victories since October and has won twice as many PGA Tour events (four) as any other player.

If Rahm hoists the Wanamaker Trophy at Oak Hill on Sunday, the Spaniard would become the first player to win the Masters and the PGA Championship in the same year since Nicklaus in 1975.

According to research by ESPN Stats & Information, it will be the first time that Rahm has started a major as the No. 1-ranked player in the world. Only six players have won a major while ranked No. 1 in the world: Woods (11 times), Scottie Scheffler , Dustin Johnson , Rory McIlroy , Fred Couples and Ian Woosnam .

Steady Scottie

As good as Rahm has been this season, Scheffler could regain the world No. 1 ranking by winning his second major at Oak Hill, according to Nosferatu, an OWGR guru on Twitter. And no one has been more consistent in majors than Scheffler.

#OWGR projection for week #20: #PGAChampionship @ 100p Scottie could reach #1 Rory #2 Cantlay, Xander #3 Homa, Fitz, CamS #4 Spieth, Finau, Viktor, Burns, JT #5 Young, Collin, Hatton, Im, Day #6 TomKim, Joaco #8 Kurt, Keegan, Hideki #9 Tommy, Sahith, Henley, 🌹 #10 — Nosferatu (@VC606) May 15, 2023

According to ESPN Stats & Information, Scheffler's 70.48 career scoring average in majors is the best among more than 600 players who have completed at least 50 major rounds. And, yes, that includes Woods, the 15-time major champion who isn't competing this week after undergoing ankle surgery last month.

Scheffler has six top-10 finishes in majors since 2021, the most by any player. He missed the cut at Southern Hills last year, his only missed weekend in 11 majors since the start of 2020.

Rochester might get chilly

Staging a major championship in upstate New York in May is risky, but the PGA of America might luck out this week. There was a short weather delay Monday morning due to frost. Temperatures are expected to fall into the mid-30s with highs in the low 50s on Wednesday. Forecasts call for temperatures in the 60s and 70s on tournament days. There's also a chance of rain on the weekend.

Starting the week with a short delay. Probably not the last one of these. #PGAChamp pic.twitter.com/wuwjKtjAzs — Thad Brown (@thadbrown7) May 15, 2023

"You can definitely tell it's probably three or four weeks away from being, like, really, really good," Thomas said of Oak Hill's East Course. "The course is great, don't get me wrong, but it's Rochester, New York, in May. I think it snowed like three weeks ago."

A reporter, presumably from Rochester, quickly informed Thomas it actually snowed four weeks ago.

"It's just the risk that comes with it," Thomas said. "And you'll have some iffy areas around the greens, and some of the greens are maybe different than others, if they're shaded or whatnot. The course is really good, that's for sure."

Smith getting closer

Australia's Cameron Smith hasn't duplicated what he did last year, when he won five times on three different tours, including his first major championship win at the 150th Open Championship at St. Andrews. Smith pocketed $17.9 million in on-course winnings -- and that doesn't include however many millions LIV Golf paid to lure him away from the PGA Tour.

This year, however, Smith has an average finish of 11th in six LIV Golf League events. He tied for 34th at the Masters. He had his best performance of the season last week, when he lost to Johnson in a three-man playoff to tie for second at LIV Golf Tulsa.

"It probably took me a few months longer than I wanted it to, but the mind feels good and the game last week was really good," Smith told ESPN on Monday. "It was nice last week to see some long putts go in and everything is starting to free up. It feels good."

DeChambeau transformed

Thomas and a few other players have already compared Oak Hill's restored East Course to Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York.

"Just in terms of the greens, not the severity of the greens," Thomas said. " They're not like Winged Foot; nothing is. But just the designs of them and some of the pin locations and how the fairways kind of canter against the slopes or whatever you want to call it."

If the East Course plays anything like Winged Foot, that might be a good thing for LIV Golf's Bryson DeChambeau , who won the 2020 U.S. Open there. DeChambeau bombed his way around the golf course for a 6-shot victory over Matthew Wolff .

"I'm going to hopefully be hitting it far but a lot straighter than Winged Foot," DeChambeau said. "That would be nice."

DeChambeau, 29, continues to transform his body. He has dropped about 15 pounds in recent months after eliminating corn, wheat, gluten, dairy products, rice and oats from his diet.

"All of the stuff that I like eating," DeChambeau said. "I was pretty much eating things that were inflaming my body. When I started eating cleaner -- a lot of organic food that's not pasteurized and with no GMOs -- I started to lose all of the inflammation. Over time, my body has started to settle in.

"People keep thinking I'm continuing to lose weight. But my body is still 210 pounds. It's because the fat content is finally starting to go away. I'm eating clean and my body is burning the fat I don't need."

In addition to jumping from the PGA Tour to LIV Golf, DeChambeau also changed equipment manufacturers (Cobra to Ping), swing coaches (Chris Como to Dana Dahlquist) and caddies (Tim Tucker to Greg Bodine).

And, of course, he's still tinkering with his swing.

"I've been trying to swing like I did in 2018 for six years now," DeChambeau said. "I got the speed. I wanted to go down that journey and it was awesome, but I just still couldn't figure out the mechanics I did well in 2018. There was a time when I fell into it in 2021. I don't know how I did it, but it fell after 2021.

"Then I hurt my hand and a lot of other stuff happened. It's just been a grind to get back to 2018. I feel like I'm getting there."

Pga championship expected to bring nearly $200m to rochester: here's how it breaks down, share this article.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — When the PGA Tour returns to Oak Hill Country Club in May, it will bring throngs of fans to Rochester and inject millions of dollars into the local economy.

Greater Rochester Enterprise, an economic development organization focused on promoting the Rochester region as a competitive place for business location and growth, is projecting the 2023 PGA Championship will draw 225,000 spectators and have a $190 million impact on the region.

GRE released an economic impact study that predicts the event will support more than 1,200 temporary, full-, and part-time jobs at Oak Hill Country Club, local restaurants, hotels, retail establishments, and construction companies. The study says the event will also result in an estimated $19.2 million in state and local fiscal revenue in the form of sales, income, and other taxes.

The influx of visitors and the national spotlight will have benefits that last beyond the week of the tournament, which runs from May 15 to 21.

“This major tournament is an opportunity to shine an international spotlight on the numerous reasons Rochester is the right place for championship-level golf, as well as the right place for businesses to grow and tap into the local, highly skilled workforce,” said Matt Hurlbutt, president and CEO of GRE.

How the money breaks down

More than 225,000 spectators are expected to attend throughout the week. Ticket prices range in cost from $55 to $215 each. Approximately 39 percent of all ticket holders will visit Rochester from outside of 100 miles throughout the week.

Those fans will bring their wallets with them when they travel. Approximately 6,000 hotel rooms will be booked locally per night, at an average rate of $350 per night, according to the GRE study, with an average stay of 2 ½ nights. These ticket holders are estimated to spend an average of $125 per day, including off-site spending on food and beverage and transportation, for a total of $9 million for the week.

Those that haven’t booked a hotel room already may have trouble finding a place to stay during the tournament, Hurlbut said. Many local hotels are already booked to capacity for the week, and popular restaurants and bars near the course are gearing up for big crowds.

In addition to spectators, more than 10,000 credentialed attendees will come to town and stay for an estimated six days. This includes the field of 156 golfers, PGA staff and officials, player support staff, family members, and members of the working media. These credentialed attendees are projected to spend another $8 million in the area during tournament week.

Additional revenue will be generated by the sales of corporate tents/tables, concessions, and merchandise. Then there is the economic impact of constructing and maintaining chalets and on-site facilities at the event during the week, as well as on-site security during the week.

In all, the GRE study projects the tournament will generate $110 million in direct revenue, $43 million in indirect revenue, and $37 million in induced spending.

Rochester is no stranger to hosting major golf events. Locust Hill Country Club was home to a yearly stop on the LPGA Tour from 1977 to 2009, and the LPGA Championship was played here from 2010 to 2014.

Oak Hill Country Club is the only American course to have hosted all six rotating men’s major golf championships, including the 1995 Ryder Cup and 1998 U.S. Amateur Championship. This year will mark the fourth time the historic course has hosted the PGA Championship. In all, Oak Hill has hosted 13 major tournaments. It will host the U.S. Amateur again in 2027.

“Rochester is a golf town. And I think you saw that in the reaction on the hospitality venues,” Hurlbutt said. “You’ve got a lot of people in this community who really snapped those tickets up.”
