Band of Brothers® Tour: “This Trip Will Stay With Me Forever”

Larry and Nancy McDonald on Band of Brothers Tour

Thank you, Nancy, for taking the time to share your experience with all of us!

Review of the Band of Brothers® Tour

Larry and I have been fortunate enough to be able to travel all over the world in the last 26 years, from the Polar Ice Cap to Antarctica, and out of 45-50 trips, this was by far the best ever. Usually after about 2, 2 ½ weeks we start missing home and our kitties, but this trip ended much too soon and it is one that will stay with me forever.

To start, the group of travelers were all so knowledgeable on the subject of WWII and Band of Brothers and this was a tour we all wanted to be on. We knew this was not just a town walking/shopping for souvenirs type tour, but an in-depth history tour. We all got along fabulously and at each group dinner, you got to know someone else a little bit better. (Every other tour we have been on there is always that ONE person who annoys the group – we didn’t have one.) A wonderful blend of people from all over the USA.

So, what made this tour so special? We all knew what we were going to see, the places we would visit, but what we weren’t expecting was our HISTORIAN (and I put that in capitals for a reason), Jonathan Carroll. By far, the most incredible guide/man/historian/bundle of energy I have ever met. You could tell how much he loved history by how he explained every detail of an operation and his knowledge of WWII. We have been on WWII tours with “experts” and they just told you what you could read in a book. Jonathan’s knowledge on the subject is astonishing. I could write paragraphs about each site, but nobody wants to read everything, so I will stick with the highlights for me. He kept us going, except for bus days we averaged between 12,000 and 16,000 steps – I gained no weight and ate like a pig.

We started at Aldbourne where Easy Company trained. In addition to pointing out the sights, Jonathan always had a personal story, like where Dick Winters went to calm his mind and reflect. To look out over Aldbourne and stand where an incredible leader stood was humbling to say the least.

We were touring in the morning before we took the ferry across the English Channel and we didn’t realize how long the ferry crossing would be, so by the time we docked it was around 10:00 PM and we were tired. Jonathan wasn’t done with us yet, though. (I thought to myself, “doesn’t this guy know we are senior citizens and we didn’t get our naps today and we need sleep?”)

He took us then to Pegasus Bridge so we could experience what the soldiers experienced when their gliders “landed,” the quiet, the only sound insects and German soldiers on the bridge. Going there at that time of night made you realize how incredible it was that this part of the D-Day invasion was accomplished. Taking us there at that time of night made me realize this was no ordinary “tour guide.” A stroke of genius.

We had been to Omaha Beach and the cemetery twice before, but for the first time I learned what a monumental feat this was. I began to learn (like a light bulb going off in my head) how all the different pieces of the puzzle had to come together in order for the invasion to succeed. At the cemetery Jonathan read something about some of the men who died that day and it brought tears to my eyes thinking of these young men (children) who gave their lives for freedom and it made you think about what they missed, getting married, having children, things like maybe one of their children would have discovered the cure for cancer. He also read us the letter written by Thomas Meehan, Easy Company’s leader who died on D-Day. What insight that man had. Thousands and thousands of graves, each one with a story, many filled with fear as they got off the amphibious boats, but vowing to protect their brothers. By reading us some of their stories made it more personal.

In addition to reading stories of individual soldiers, he must have stayed up all night researching the names of people in our group and directing them to the grave of someone who might have been a relative.

Going to Brecourt Manor and seeing exactly where Easy Company “silenced” the German artillery was amazing. We walked the path they took as Jonathan described each man’s part in the operation and where the guns were placed and how they were captured. It really makes it more real to walk their path, rather than watching it on TV, and the bravery of these men is inspiring.

We moved on to Saint Mere-Eglise and St. Catherine’s Church where Dick Winters went up into the steeple and spotted the German tanks coming. To see a mannequin of a paratrooper hanging from the steeple of a church brought home the many possibilities of in some cases, living or dying was a matter of chance based on where and how you landed.

We learned in detail Operation Market Garden , but the highlight for me was the fight at the Crossroads. Again, walking the path, climbing up the dikes, hiking over fields where the fight occurred makes it real. Jonathan led a group of volunteers of the group in the mad dash across the field so they could see what it was like, minus 60 pounds of gear.

We moved on to Bastogne, the Battle of the Bulge where my adopted father fought, and then the small villages of Foy, Recogne, Cobru. What hell those men went through. Hiking through the forest, seeing the foxholes where Easy dug in, all the time Jonathan telling us personal stories about individual men, their injuries, the death of buddies and through all of that Dick Winters and his officers kept the men focused on their goal. I understand now why my adopted father never wanted to talk about it.

In addition to the American Cemetery at Omaha, we also went to several others including the cemetery in Luxembourg where Patton is buried. Again, Jonathan had researched names in the group and directed them to the grave of a possible relative. Since I was adopted and don’t know my real name, for the first time in my 68 years I felt a loss and an emptiness. Did my father and uncles serve? Were they buried here? I felt like the kid not picked for a team as I watched the group go to their graves. So, instead I spent a lot of time at the graves of men who were never identified and just listed as a “brave soldier.” That was my connection.  We both had no family. At every grave I saw where the soldier couldn’t be identified, I said, “Thank you.”

I knew nothing about the Maginot line so I found that very interesting.

We had been to a concentration camp before in Stutthoff, Poland and it was a lot more graphic than the camp at Dachau. Once again, I struggled trying to understand man’s inhumanity to man. It is very scary to me to think something like this could happen again. I will never understand how somebody could do this to another human being. I guess I am NOT a sociopath!

Going to Berchtesgarden and seeing Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest was a high point for us. We have seen so many documentaries about it, it was unnerving to stand where this sick person stood.

We ended at Zell Am See where Jonathan and a group of our tour people “re-enacted” Easy Company’s jump to celebrate the anniversary of their jump into Normandy. I am proud of Kristine who was the only woman in our group to do the jump.

I could go on and on about the sights, the museums, the cemeteries, but the best thing about our tour was Jonathan. His descriptions of battles made you feel like you were (almost) a part of it. His knowledge is never-ending and his love and enthusiasm on the subject of Easy Company was contagious. He put the pieces together on how this operation was planned, made it personal by telling stories about each individual man, making connections of possible family members to people in our group and how this Band of Brothers stood out with the leadership of Dick Winters; local farm boys, college kids, blue collar kids who came together to fight evil, each man doing his best to protect the guy next to him. Under the leadership of Dick Winters you knew how Easy Company became a “Band of Brothers.” This tour showed the true meaning of perseverance in the face of fear, integrity, bravery, leadership, commitment and how Dick Winters instilled these in his men. What a man. I am humbled by this experience and it will stay with me until my last day.

Jonathan, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. You are amazing. I will go on any tour you lead.

Nancy McDonald

About the company.

Stephen E. Ambrose founded Stephen Ambrose Historcal Tours. The author of several best-selling books, including Undaunted Courage, co-writer and executive producer of the epic HBO series Band of Brothers, and founder of The National WWII Museum, Dr. Ambrose led his first tour, D-Day to the Rhine, in the late 1970s with his friend Peter McLean when he was a professor at the University of New Orleans. His passion for teaching Americans about their nation’s heritage and her heroes motivated him to found Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours along with his niece Dr. Edie Ambrose, her husband, Yakir Katz, and Stephen’s son, Andy Ambrose.

Throughout his career, Dr. Ambrose led many trips to the places that he wrote about, which was a natural extension of his enthusiasm for investigating history. Whether visiting Omaha Beach with D-Day veterans to pay homage to the fallen, following the path of Lewis and Clark down the Missouri River, or tromping the battlefields of the Civil War, he sought to enlighten, entertain, and educate with his tours.

Today, Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours carries on his legacy, continuing to preserve and expand the carefully conceived and executed historical itineraries inspired by his life’s work.

Testimonials

This tour is special. There is nothing else like it.

– Major Dick Winters, The Commander of Easy Company

I received your letter today. Asking me if I enjoyed the tour, I sure did. Buck told me I would enjoy it very much. It was so much more than I expected. The tour guides (Ron, Jake and Mark) were great. They were so helpful with Buck and me. Buck is 87 and he needed some help sometimes and they were always there to help. I’m a little bit younger than Buck but I needed some help sometimes also. Buck never talked about his time in Easy Co., but I learned more of what he did in the army when we were on tour. He is quite a person and always was. I took one hundred and five pictures and I’m showing them to my family and friends. I had a wonderful time. Thanks for letting me go with Buck. I know Elaine would have liked to go but she is not up to it. Thanks again for letting me have such a great two weeks, and I met some great people on the tour also.

– Bob Taylor, WWII Veteran, Participant, Band of Brothers Tour

I think I can speak for Ed Mauser [Easy Company Veteran], who finally became emotional once we got him alone, that this was the most fantastic trip of his life. The Captain on our plane came back to shake his hand, and he received a standing ovation from the entire plane and the crew. Now, the curator of the Strategic Air Command Museum in Omaha has contacted me to put together a WWII Veterans’ reunion in the upcoming months and will be flying in as many members of Easy Company as possible. I hope all of you enjoyed the trip as much as I did and of course as much as Ed did. Thanks for sharing two weeks of your lives with us.

Respectfully-

– Brian Kruse

I wanted to write you and express my deepest gratitude for your help in organizing such a memorable tour. I would highly recommend the Band of Brothers experience to anyone, and frankly, hope to find myself on another one of your tours very soon.

I am grateful for the opportunity to have met such wonderful people and thoroughly enjoyed seeing the experience through the eyes of a true veteran-our guide Buck Taylor-it truly brought such a special element to the trip.

The accommodations and food were outstanding and I feel very lucky to have experienced things I know I would not have on other tours-I attribute this to the special relationships Stephen Ambrose Tours has cultivated over the years. For example, the private dinner at the Eagle¹s Nest was the pinnacle of the trip for me. I appreciated the fact that all details were thoughtfully planned out-everything seemed smooth and effortless.

As a history buff, I looked forward to this trip with great anticipation and you exceeded my expectations to the fullest. I thank you very much and look forward to traveling with you again.

Warm regards,

– Jim Compton, Participant, Band of Brothers Tour

I have just returned from your “Band of Brothers Tour.”

In doing business, and dealing with lots of businesses, I find that many make promises and do not carry them out. I find a few that even promise big, and for the most part fail to meet goals even remotely.

I must say it is an incredible surprise to find a business that not only promises big, but delivers even bigger!

I knew I was on a special tour, when on our first day in England, we were met by 101st Airborne reinactors. I knew it was special when in Holland, we climbed up in the steeple of a church used by Major Winters to see German troop locations. I knew it was special when we went on the guided tour of underground bunkers at Berchtesgaden. None of this was advertised nor promised. And the final dinner at the Eagle¹s Nest was probably the most memorable.

One would be remiss to fail to mention the leader of the tour. Ron Drez was the history professor you wanted in college, but couldn¹t get because his classes were always full. He was great. He was so enthusiastic each and every morning as we loaded onto the bus. I was fortunate to share lunch with Ron on a few occasions, and his stories were fascinating, plus he didn¹t mind answering questions I knew he had answered many, many times before.

I should add that the meals were great. There were no problems with our hotel rooms. France has not mastered the science of modern plumbing yet, but that wasn¹t your problem. Our bus driver, Hija, maneuvered the bus like an F1 racecar throughout Europe. I would be remiss not to include the additional support by Jake Powers, Chad Weisensel, and Melissa Zweinbaum.

To tell you how great this trip was, everyone has been asking me about it, and I just grin, but no words come out. There aren’t words to tell how great it was. I look forward to making another tour with you in the future.

– Keith Buchanan

I’m writing to you to ask you to tell the entire staff how perfect the recent Band of Brothers Tour was for all of us! The group was unusually congenial, and every moment of the tour was just spectacular—we ladies agreed that each day outdid the preceding one, and that’s a difficult thing to accomplish. Lee and I, personally, enjoyed wholly each activity (as did Lee’s brother) and we especially appreciated the very knowledgeable (and entertaining!) commentary by Ron, Jake, and Mark. I’ve just selected and ordered 179 of the 680 pictures my husband-cameraman took, and I’m looking forward to creating a huge scrapbook which will enable us to enjoy this trip for years to come. We are so grateful to Mark for contacting us originally about the tour, and also to you for your kind answers to my emails before we left. I think you’re looking for comments to improve the tour—and actually, everything was just great! You might mention to the ladies that there are not hairdryers in each hotel (we had three rooms with them of the seven hotels); and I’m glad my friend clued me in to the no washcloth, no top sheet customs in Europe! These, however, are extremely minor matters which I just tell you because you asked for suggestions—they’re not a criticism… In a few days I’ll try uploading some group pictures of our tour, which, I repeat, was absolutely perfect and the experience of a lifetime! Thanks so much for the help all of you granted us!

Band Of Brothers Tour

Has anyone been on or known anyone that has taken a Stephen Ambrose Band of Brothers Tour? If yes, can you share any information?

No, but we did take a Band of Brothers tour with Dale Booth. I think there were 6 of us in a van and he did a marvelous tour. He’s met several of them as well as a number of veterans from D-Day and had lots of information to share as well as knowing exactly where events occurred.

Overlord Tours also has a Band of Brothers tour, so that's another one you could look at - https://www.overlordtour.com/product/tour-3-omaha-band-of-brothers-full-day-tour/ . I believe they can also do personalized tours, if you have particular sites you want to see.

Also, check out the tours offered by the National World War II Museum, which offers a Band of Brothers tour. However, their tours are expensive.

In September 2019, a Stephen Ambrose BofB Tour group was staying at our hotel in Bastogne. A very elderly group, and I say that as an elderly person! I heard comments from other guides and at a museum about that company - I won't repeat those comments because I have no personal knowledge.

I had looked at the SABofB tour that included Battle of the Bulge sites, but decided against it. Looking at that group, I don't see how they could have handled the itinerary on the website unless they just did a lot of drive-bys and stops for a quick photo op.

Thank you for your replies. After a little more digging, I found quite a few pretty bad reviews. I think I was a bit overwhelmed at making up our own itinerary because the trip will again be based a lot on my son's interests and he is hard to pin down this long before the trip. On the other hand, he never complains about my choices.

A vision is starting to come together in my head. I would welcome any other suggestions and experiences related to Bastogne.

.....maybe start in Paris to Normandy to Bastogne then stay in Belgium or go up to Amsterdam. Lots of great choices.

We went from Paris to Reims, just long enough in Reims to see the Surrender Museum.

https://musees-reims.fr/fr/musees/musee-de-la-reddition/

Then we took the train from Reims to Luxembourg; and a car service took us from the Luxembourg train station to our hotel in Bastogne. Then 2 incredible days with Reg Jans and his team for Battle of the Bulge sites. The same car service took us back to Luxembourg, so we could catch a train back to Paris, and make our way to Gare St. Lazare for a train ride to Bayeux.

This was our 2nd time in Normandy. We had wanted to book Overlord's Hedgerows tour, but they didn't get enough people; so we did a 1 day repeat tour of Omaha/Utah sites, and a British and Canadian highlights tour.

From Bayeux we went to Saint-Malo by train. An unexpected highlight of the trip was the 1939-1945 Memorial outside of Saint-Malo in Alet - a walk along the coast line. This is a restored German bunker. We just happened to walk up a few minutes before the guided tour started. The tour was in French, but they had an abbreviated syllabus in English, and the guide took great pains to make sure we knew what was going on.

Feel free to message me for more details. But above all, get Reg Jans.

My trip report:

One other suggestion.....

If you want more of a personalized tour to visit specific sites, you might consider this guide - http://www.visitdday.com/ . This will be a more expensive option but will allow you to see as much as possible and get as much out of the experience as possible. You might want to contact him and get a price quote.

EP and Ken,

Thanks so much for the information. I will definitely use the information!!

Yesterday I went on the all day Band of Brothers tour provided by Overlord tours. Enjoyed it very much, our guide Janick was very knowledgeable and provided many details about the D-day invasion. The tour covers a lot of territory and stops at these locations. MORNING: Longues-sur-Mer Battery – Omaha Beach – American Cemetery of Colleville – Pointe du Hoc. AFTERNOON: 1.5 hour lunch stop at Sainte-Mère-Eglise and Airborne Museum – Crash of the C47 # 66 at Beuzeville-au-Plain – Marmion’s farm – Brecourt Manor – Angoville-au-Plain – Drop Zone D – Carentan. You can private message me if you have any questions

Thank you Scott!

"An unexpected highlight of the trip...." Thanks for this singular piece of information on the related WW2 site near St Malo. I already had a cultural reason to see St Malo but this military site is certainly another incentive.

stephen ambrose tours band of brothers

Has anyone recently gone on the Stephen Ambrose "Band of Brothers" tour? How does it compare to the other historical tours/

' class=

I went on the BoB tour in September 2011 with my 12 year old son. The WWII vet on the trip with us was Col. Ed Shames of Easy Company. This trip is a must do, once in a lifetime thing. If you like military history and/or the BoB mini-series, you will love it. Stephen Ambrose Tours does it first class, all the hotels were very nice, the connections went off on time, and most importantly, the tour guides know how to talk about military history so that everyone will enjoy the bus rides. Ron Drez was our military historian. Ron was great, but I can't tell you how privileged we all felt to be on the same tour with a WWII vet from the BoBs. Col. Shames had numerous stories to tell about the days at Taccoa, the Eagles Nest and everyplace in-between. He was extremely gracious with everyone on the tour including many locals in Normandy and Holland that recognized him as a WWII liberator and would approach him for a hug and autograph.

The only things I can says that approach negatives are; 1- keep in-mind that the schedule on the two week trip is demanding. You are up early most mornings to have a group breakfast and than off on the bus by 8:00 am. 2- the bathroom on the bus is for "emergencies" only, you learn to hold it in until the rest stops.

Take this tour as soon as you can, you will remember it forever. I have a few videos of the trip on Vimeo https://vimeo.com/groups/187957

Has anyone recently taken the civil war tour leaving Memphis with Stephen Ambrose?

"band of brothers" turns 25.

A new anniversary edition kindles memories of Stephen Ambrose's early research into Easy Company's WWII saga.

stephen ambrose tours band of brothers

The recent release of a 25th-anniversary edition of the Stephen Ambrose best seller Band of Brothers stirs memories of Ambrose’s research in preparation for writing the classic narrative of Easy Company paratroopers during World War II. With a new foreword by Museum champion Tom Hanks, the anniversary edition is available through the Museum Store .

Ambrose’s early work on the book, which would become the basis of an award-winning HBO miniseries , dates to the late 1980s, not long before Ambrose and fellow University of New Orleans history professor Gordon H. “Nick” Mueller, PhD, began drafting plans for a WWII museum in the Crescent City. The pair became cofounders of the institution initially known as The National D-Day Museum.

Mueller, who this year transitioned into the role of Museum President & CEO Emeritus, recalled how his friend appeared at a 1988 hotel reunion of veterans of Easy Company (506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division) and persuaded the men to grant interviews. The strategic visit came as part of a D-Day oral history project, the results of which are now preserved in the Museum’s collection.

Drawing support from UNO’s Eisenhower Center for Leadership Studies and Mueller, a university vice chancellor at the time, Ambrose was assembling material for a definitive book treatment of the Normandy invasion, to be published at the 50th anniversary of the epic battle. Along the way, Ambrose was drawn to a smaller-scale project, charting the dramatic journey of Easy Company from its intensive training in America through high-profile combat episodes across Europe.

“He heard they were having a reunion,” Mueller said. “He went down there, found the hotel room, kind of barged in, said, ‘I’m writing a book on D-Day and want to get your stories.’” The result of Ambrose’s targeted research and writing about Easy Company was “one of the best if not the best” small-unit histories from the European theater, Mueller said.

A transcript from a 1990 Ambrose oral history interview with Easy Company’s popular commander, Richard “Dick” Winters, who held the rank of major by war’s end, is part of the University of New Orleans Kalikow Collection, now maintained in the Museum’s vast collection of personal accounts. At one point during the interview, conducted at Winters’s Pennsylvania farm, the historian questions the war hero about whether he ever suffered “shell shock” or “battle fatigue.”

In the exchange—which is incorporated into the Band of Brothers narrative on page 202 of the new edition—Ambrose notes one theory that “every infantryman goes through three stages, depending on how long he’s been in a combat situation. First is, ‘This can’t happen to me, I’m not gonna get wounded. I’m too smart, I’m too good looking, I’m too young.’ . . . And the CO tells you, ‘Half of you guys are going to be dead tonight,’ and you look at your buddy and say, ‘Sorry, I’m gonna miss you.’ And then the second stage is, ‘Jesus, this could happen to me if I’m not careful.”

Winters: “Yeah, that’s right.”

Ambrose: “So I’ve got to dig my foxhole a little deeper, I’ve got to sight this weapon a little tighter.”

Winters: “Now you’ve heard a few of them (shots) crack over your head. They didn’t zing over your head.”

Ambrose: “And the third stage is, ‘This is going to happen to me unless I get out of here.’”

Winters: “I hope to hell it isn’t too bad.”

Ambrose: “Yeah. What about you?”

Winters: “Most every man. and myself included—I had reached that third stage in Bastogne. ‘Sooner or later, I’m gonna get it. I just hope to hell it isn’t too bad.’ But there was never a fear in me that I was gonna break. I just felt I was going to be hit sooner or later. But as far as the breaking point, no.”

Ambrose: “Let me ask you (from) another angle: There’s a lot of deprivation of sleep. You’re not eating very well.”

Winters: “No.”

Ambrose: “You’re having to make decisions constantly.”

Winters: “That’s correct.”

Ambrose: “You’re under a lot of pressure all the time.”

Ambrose: “Did you ever wonder, did you ever become afraid, ‘My judgment is going to be not good anymore?’”

Winters: “No, I didn’t. I was in excellent shape. I don’t think there was a man in that outfit in better shape than I was physically, and it showed. I had trained . . . ”

Ambrose: “So your confidence was always strong.”

Winters: “Very good, yeah.”
