Baker delivers Legends Tour win at JCB Championship

Golf in uae, golf in uae world.

Wins for the second time this season as tournament reduced to 36 holes due to weather

Sport - Golf - 2023 JCB Championship

Peter Baker has won his second Legends Tour event of the season by defeating a world class line-up of major winners at JCB Golf and Country Club, Uttoxeter, England.

Baker was the 36-hole leader and he became champion without hitting another shot after the final round was unfortunately cancelled, with heavy rain from Storm Antoni rendering the course unplayable.

Winning score of two rounds of 69 for a -6 total and a one-stroke victory for the the 55-year-old who clinches his second trophy of the season after he won the Irish Legends by seven shots.

“It’s incredible”

“It’s amazing,” said Baker. “I thought we were going to play, and I had to make myself think we were going to play, even though the weather’s been against us. It’s incredible. It’s not one of those things that usually happens to you – it’s called off and you win.

“The greens were really quick and in brilliant condition. You had to get the pace right. It was difficult for all of us, but I managed to get that pace right many times and I putted lovely and hit some really nice iron shots.”

Three-time major winner Vijay Singh came second on -5. South African  Ernie Els held the lead for much of day two after an eagle on the third and back-to-back birdies on six and seven, but the South African dropped three shots on the back nine to finish tied third alongside Steven Alker on -4.

Jeev Milkha Singh solo fifth

Dubai-based Jeev Milkha Singh was left to rue a poor finish on the final hole as his double bogey on 18 resulted in a 72 and solo fifth on -3.

Defending champion and last week’s Senior Open winner Alex Čejka finished alongside 2002 Ryder Cup player Niclas Fast in tied sixth, and tournament host Darren Clarke and eight-time DP World Tour number one Colin Montgomerie were part of an eight-player tie for eigth on one under.

The win for Baker is his second trophy of 2023, taking him to second in the MCB Road to Mauritius, the Legends Tour’s season-long ranking.

The next event is The Legends Tour Trophy hosted by Simon Khan at Hanbury Manor Marriot Hotel and Country Club, England, on August 12th-14th.

Legends Tour hits new landmark with biggest schedule and record €18million prizepool

The Legends Tour has unveiled plans for a record-breaking 2024 season, headlined by its busiest schedule to date – including nine new events - and an eye-watering €18million prize pool.

Legends Tour

Running from April to December, this year’s globetrotting schedule will feature 20 events - featuring new tournaments set to debut in Barbados, Kenya, Mexico, Spain, the UK and Zambia, with even more additions still to be announced.

They join Legends Tour staples such as the flagship Staysure PGA Seniors Championship - which will return to Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeen following the success of last year’s event – and the Irish Legends at Seapoint Golf Links.

Many of the Legends Tour’s brightest stars will be eyeing up Major victory in 2024 at the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship at Harbor Shores Golf Club, the US Senior Open at Newport Country Club and The Senior Open presented by Rolex at Carnoustie Golf Links.

The season will culminate with the MCB Tour Championship Mauritius at Constance Belle Mare Plage, where qualifying players will contest for the John Jacobs Trophy, which was won in 2023 by former Ryder Cup player Peter Baker.

As well as the tournament silverware, some of golf’s biggest names will also be competing for the largest prize pool in Legends Tour history. The €18million (more than €8.6million of which will be assigned outside of the Majors of senior men’s golf – the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, the US Senior Open and The Senior Open presented by Rolex) represents a 100 per cent increase since the tour returned to a full schedule in 2022 following the covid pandemic, with $2million to play for in the final two events on the Road to Mauritius and a bonus pool of $100,000 for the top five players in the final standings.

Complementing the drama of the professional events will be the unique Celebrity Pro-Am, which sees stars from the world of sport and entertainment competing to raise money and awareness for their chosen charities. Meanwhile, passionate amateurs can tee off alongside their heroes in the Legends Experience, the tour’s one-of-a-kind pro-am experience.

The announcement suggests the global growth of the Legends Tour - which hit new heights in 2023 - is set to continue. At the end of the season, the brand announced record figures for amateur participation, spectators and social media engagement, with the latter taking total reach across all channels to over 100million people for the first time.

In November, the inaugural Vinpearl DIC Legends Vietnam - the competition’s first foray into Vietnam - embodied the expansion into new markets, including Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and Central America, that has characterised the Legends Tour’s first three years.

Phil Harrison, CEO of the Legends Tour, said: “We have been working hard behind the scenes, and 2024 promises to be another incredible year for the Legends Tour.

“Securing new events in some truly spectacular venues around the world is always a key objective of ours, and we are thrilled with the additions to the schedule for this season, as well as the prestigious venues we are honoured to return to.

“Everything - from the standard of competition to the number of amateurs getting involved – has been growing year on year, and this year will be no exception. We cannot wait to see it all unfold.”

Hideki Matsuyama has already won prestigious tournaments hosted by golf legends Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. He’s now got his eyes on another big one this week.

After winning last month’s The Genesis Invitational, which is hosted by Woods, to complement his 2014 triumph at the Nicklaus-hosted Memorial Tournament presented by Workday, the 31-year-old enters this week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard with a mission to complete a unique treble of victories.

Since Woods began hosting The Genesis Invitational in 2020, no player has won all three player-hosted tournaments on the PGA TOUR. And Matsuyama hopes to change that.

“I’m feeling pretty good right now, so I hope to put myself near the top of the leaderboard at the end of the week and in a position to get another win,” said Matsuyama ahead of his appearance at Bay Hill.

“Of course playing here on the PGA TOUR, this is one tournament I’ve always wanted to win but for whatever reason, this has been a place I’ve never really played well," he continued. "So I’m figuring out how to overcome those issues, whether that means practicing at home or here at this course I’m not sure. It is something I’ll consider each day as we go about preparing for the week.”

The Arnold Palmer Invitational, one of eight Signature Events this season, will feel like a home game for Matsuyama as it is played in Orlando, the Japanese superstar's base when he's in the U.S. Matsuyama holds just one top-10 and three other top-25s in nine appearances here and missed the cut in 2023.

“Looking back, I’m obviously very excited about the win (at The Genesis),” said Matsuyama, who closed with a final-round 62 for his latest triumph. “All the way up to the final round, I was able to get some good work in on things I was focusing on the entire week. As for my golf, the putter is still a bit shaky but it’s getting closer. I’m hitting some good shots and depending on how my short game goes around the greens may be the difference between having a high finish this week or not. This week feels like it’s not a normal tournament.”

Matsuyama will take on an elite field gathered at Bay Hill, which will include world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, second-ranked Rory McIlroy and defending champion Kurt Kitayama. Other Asian stars in the field include Korea’s Tom Kim, Si Woo Kim, Byeong Hun An and Sungjae Im. Chinese Taipei’s C.T. Pan will also make his first appearance in a Signature Event, having qualified through the Aon Swing 5 on the back of a recent top-three finish at the Mexico Open at Vidanta.

Matsuyama, who is also the 2021 Masters champion, has been dealing with a slight sore back over the past week ahead of his 10th successive Bay Hill start in the event held in honor of the late 62-time PGA TOUR winner Arnold Palmer.

Still, Matsuyama feels confident about this chances: “If I can shake that off I should be able to get in some good practice, put some work in around the greens and feel better.”

What Is The Legends Tour? A closer look at what used to be called the European Seniors Tour and Staysure Tour

  • Sign up to Golf Monthly Newsletter Newsletter

What Is The Legends Tour?

Formerly known as the European Seniors Tour and the Staysure Tour, the Legends Tour is the men’s professional golf tour for members aged 50 and older. Five years after the first edition of The Senior Open, won by Neil Coles in 1987, more than 60 professionals called for a formally structured Tour, which was then created in 1992.

The Legends Tour features a strong playing membership that includes former Major winners, world number ones and Ryder Cup players and captains. Players compete for the John Jacobs Trophy, which is awarded to the golfer who finishes first on the Legends Tour Order of Merit each season.

You can get up close and personal with Legends at world-class destinations across Europe, the United States and Africa by getting your Legends Tour 2022 tickets .

Past winners (full list below) include Scotland legends Colin Montgomerie and Sam Torrance, as well as former Masters champion and world number one, Ian Woosnam.

A host of other big names and former DP World Tour champions compete on the Legends Tour, including Thomas Bjørn, Paul McGinley, Paul Lawrie, Michael Campbell, and America’s Tom Lehman.

Who Owns The Legends Tour?

In 2020, the Staysure Tour was rebranded the Legends Tour under a new ownership structure. This was part of a ground-breaking agreement between the European Tour and Staysure founder and group CEO Ryan Howsam.

Under the agreement, Howsam, who founded insurance firm Staysure in 2004, took a majority equity share in the Legends Tour. Howsam, a golf fanatic, also owns and invests in companies in sport, insurance, tech, food and media.

What Is The Alliance Series?

A number of Legends Tour events (see below) will take place in ‘Alliance’ format, which offers amateur golfers (max handicap 18 for men and 24 for women) the opportunity to compete alongside the Legends of the game and live the life of a pro – on and off the golf course.

There are six confirmed Alliance Series events in 2022. At these tournaments, amateur golfers get to play a minimum of two competitive rounds during the Championship, alongside different pros in front of crowds and the television cameras.

It costs between £8,000 and £12,000 to enter a tournament. As well as the playing experience, the package offers inside-the-ropes access at the tournament, hospitality, and use of the players lounge.

What Is The Celebrity Series?

The Celebrity Series provides another unique playing experience, where amateur golfers get to play with personalities from sport, business and media the day before the tournament gets underway. A Celebrity Series team consists of two amateurs, one Legend and one celebrity. The cost is £2,500 per person or £5,000 per team of two amateurs.

It’s a package that comes with all the trimmings, including inside-the-ropes access at the tournament, use of the players lounge and locker room, and post-round hospitality with the Legends.

The Celebrity Series attracts a number of familiar faces from the world of sport and media

What Is The Championship Pro-Am?

There’s a third opportunity for amateur golfers to experience the life of a pro golfer within the Legends Tour set-up  – the Championship Pro-Am. This takes place ahead of the competitive tournament days, and costs £3,500 per team (three amateurs and one professional). Individual places can be purchased for £1,000.

Legends Tour Schedule 2022

The Legends Tour has returned stronger and boasts an international schedule with tournaments taking place across a variety of different countries and continents. The Tour will come to a conclusion in the exotic climes of the Indian Ocean, with the ‘Indian Ocean Swing’. Firstly, The MCB Tour Championship Seychelles will be played at Constance Lemuria, Praslin, Seychelles, on December 2-4, 2022, while the MCB Tour Championship Mauritius will return to the Legends Course at Constance Belle Mare Plage, Poste de Flacq, Mauritius, the following week where players will compete for a minimum prize fund of €500,000.

A number of other events and venues complement a growing roster of top top-class tournaments on the Legends Tour in 2022, and there’s a lot of golf to be played before the Order of Merit winner gets crowned in Mauritius. And along the way, the players will be competing for record prize funds totalling over €15 million.

PGA Legends Tour partners with Police Legacy

legends tour golf scores

Police Legacies throughout Australia will be the beneficiaries of a new charity partnership that each now have with the PGA Legends Tour.

Each policing jurisdiction has its own Police Legacy that supports families of those who are no longer amongst us.

First announced at the Australian PGA Senior Championship at Richmond, NSW, late last year, the agreement was formalised last week.

It will see 1 per cent of total prize money on the PGA Legends Tour donated to Police Legacy, with the funds to be divided equally between each of the Police Legacies.

In addition, QR codes will be on display at each PGA Legends Tour event over the course of the year which will provide the opportunity for amateur playing partners to donate to a not-for-profit organisation that strives to ensure that no spouse/partner or child of a deceased police officer or protective services officer feels forgotten or in need of support.

It is the first such Australia-wide charity partnership that the various Police Legacies have entered into and will provide invaluable support to families of those who have served and been lost.

“Golf is not for the faint-hearted. Golfers honour tradition, integrity and excellence but also a steady hand and resolve,” said Detective Superintendent Donna McCarthy APM, Chair, NSW Police Legacy.

“These same qualities are found in Police Legacies Australia-wide as we provide care and ongoing support to the families of police officers who have suffered a great loss when their police officer dies.

“Our Board, staff, and volunteers strive to ensure that no partner or dependent child will ever feel forgotten or in need and will continue to feel connected to the police family.

“We also provide support for the parents of deceased officers, and support police officers to fundraise for police families facing necessitous circumstances.”

Victoria Police Legacy CEO, Lex de Man AFSM, thanked the PGA of Australia for providing a platform through the Legends Tour to raise funds and awareness of the work done by the various Police Legacies across Australia.

“Thank you to the PGA Legends Tour for the terrific opportunity for Police Legacies across all Australian police jurisdictions to be recognised as its official charity partner,” said Mr de Man. “Your incredible support will go a long way to support those in the police family who have lost a loved one.”

Last year, the PGA Legends Tour staged 76 events worth $1.9 million, numbers they hope to better in 2024.

Legends Tour Coordinator, Andy Rogers, said that the support of club golfers who participate alongside Australian golf greats such as Peter Lonard, Andre Stolz, Peter Senior and Mike Harwood will contribute significantly to fundraising efforts.

“With the QR codes we have in the clubhouse we have already seen donations of more than $5,000 in the past week alone,” Rogers said.

“The PGA Legends Tour is extremely proud to align with each Police Legacy as our charity partner and we hope to be able to contribute significantly to their fundraising efforts over the course of the year.”

Tiger Woods live golf scores: Updated results, highlights from 2024 Genesis Invitational

T he Genesis Invitational isn't your typical golf tournament for Tiger Woods. The course at Riviera Country Club is where the legend made his golf debut back in 1992, and it's now organized by the Tiger Woods Foundation.

So it's fitting that the 15-time major champion is making his 2023-24 PGA Tour season debut at the links in Los Angeles. Woods is set to compete in the 2024 edition of the Genesis Invitational, an event he has yet to win.

Woods has not played in an official tournament since the 2023 Masters, where he managed make the Saturday cut but was forced to withdraw from the competition due to injury. After undergoing ankle surgery, it's been a long road to recovery for the 48-year-old, but he is ready to try and add a Genesis title to his résumé.

"It's been an ongoing process," Woods said of his recovery. "How the body feels from day to day and the grind of trying to practice and get ready for an event, just the overall just aging process of it all, that has been the trick of it and been the challenge of it ... [I'm] trying to get used to the new feels of the body. That's always the challenge."

Woods has twice finished as the runner-up at Riviera. He placed second in back-to-back years, losing to Billy Mayfield in 1998 and Ernie Els in 1999 (Ernie Els). Now, he'll have to bring back some of that old Tiger magic in his first pro event in over 10 months.

Here's how and when Woods is playing at the Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles this week.

Tiger Woods tee times at the 2024 Genesis Invitational

Here are Woods' tee times for the first two rounds of the 2024 Genesis Invitational:

Tiger Woods score: What did he shoot today?

Woods finished 1 over par in his first round at the Genesis Invitational.

Round 1 highlights

(All times Eastern)

5:21 p.m.:  Woods finishes the day with a bogey after the shank on 18, so he wraps up at one over par through round one. He recorded five birdies but six bogeys in his return to competition.

5:11 p.m.:  Woods with a shank right off the tree on the 18th hole...it will be an uphill battle to avoid going back over par.

5:03 p.m.:  Woods sinks the putt and moves back to even par on the day. He's had his ups and downs, but five birdies is a pretty encouraging result with one hole to play.

4:48 p.m.:  Woods is good for par on the 16th hole, keeping him at 1 over with two holes to play today.

4:24 p.m.:  Woods goes over par as his putt barely rolled around the left lip. He had to settle for bogey, his fifth of the day, as he goes to 1 over.

4:06 p.m.:  Woods sinks the par putt, and he remains even through 14 holes.

3:52 p.m.:  Another stellar showing by Woods. He had a tough approach, but reached the green with a perfect chip shot and saved par with the easy putt from there.

3:36 p.m.:  Woods settles for a bogey on the 12th hole as he moves back to par.

3:15 p.m.:  Woods had to try a putt from the edge of the green, but he gets it to fall for a birdie to drop back under 1 overall.

2:57 p.m.:  Rough hole for Woods as his approach wound up taking him a bit longer than past holes. He winds up with his third bogey of the day to fall back to an even par.

2:39 p.m.:  He drains the long putt on the nine to save par and stay 1 under going out.

2:20 p.m.:  Woods settles for par on the eighth hole. He's tied for 17th at 1 under as he prepares for the ninth hole.

2:05 p.m.:  Woods can't quite get the right-to-left birdie putt to hook enough into the hole, and it winds up speeding just past. He winds up settling for par to stay 1 under.

1:51 p.m.:  Perfect left-to-right putt for Woods, who sinks it for the birdie on the sixth hole to go back to 1 under.

1:40 p.m.:  Woods' putt for birdie sailed slightly to the left of the hole and he has to settle for par, his first par of the day. That will keep him even through five.

1:24 p.m.:  A great bounceback by Woods. He dropped in a solid drive on the par-3 fourth hole, then capped it off with the birdie putt to drop back to an even par through the first four holes.

1:13 p.m.:  Make it back-to-back bogeys for Woods after the promising start. His putt for par sailed just wide right, then he sank his second putt attempt. He moves to 1 over after the second and third holes.

1 p.m.:  Woods has to settle for a bogey after his putt for par comes up just short. He's now even through two holes and is tied for 18th.

12:41 p.m.:  It doesn't get much better than that. Woods goes up and down to open his day with a birdie on the first hole. He'll open the round tied for eighth.

12:26 p.m.:  Woods' tournament has officially begun as he drives the ball a bit to the right of the fairway into the rough to start the first hole at the Genesis Invitational.

12 p.m.:  Woods has begun warming up, and he's showing off his new-look Sun Day Red outfit. He's got an all-white outfit with a black hat, both depicting the 15-striped tiger that is representative of his 15 majors won.

Joaquin Niemann wins LIV Jeddah; Anthony Kim last in return

  • Associated Press

KING ABDULLAH ECONOMIC CITY, Saudi Arabia -- Joaquin Niemann won his second LIV Golf title in three starts, closing with a 4-under 66 on Sunday at LIV Golf Jeddah for a 4-shot victory over Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel .

Niemann now has three wins in the past three months, starting with the Australian Open victory in December that allowed him to rejoin the European tour and eventually put him on the path toward getting invited to the Masters.

He started his third season in the Saudi-funded league with a 59 at Mayakoba and winning in a playoff over Sergio Garcia . Now he soars to the top of the points list with another win ahead of next week's LIV event in Hong Kong.

"We've got another week to come," Niemann said. "I told myself I can win these three weeks I'm playing. So next week and see what happens."

He finished third in an Asian Tour event in Oman last week.

No one got closer than 2 shots behind Niemann in the final round at Royal Greens. Oosthuizen was the last challenger until a bogey on the 16th hole. He shot 67, while Schwartzel had a 68.

Niemann also took a dig at the world ranking in his interview with LIV's broadcast team. He was asked if he was one of the leading favorites to win a major this year.

"How is that possible? I'm like 100 in the world," Niemann said with a grin.

Niemann is No. 72 in the world. The Official World Golf Ranking, in a vote cast by the organizations that run the majors, chose not to award LIV ranking points because of the small field (54 players) that functions as a closed shop with no qualifying.

Anthony Kim , who had gone 12 years without competitive golf until signing a deal with LIV Golf this week, had a 74 and finished in last place , 33 shots out of the lead. He made two birdies Sunday, giving him four birdies for the week.

Kim's deal allows him to play the rest of LIV's events this year without being attached to a team.

Crushers won the team event Sunday.

Niemann finished at 17-under 193 and earned $4 million, giving him $8,162,000 in three LIV events this year.

The Masters gave Niemann an invitation based on his Australian Open victory, along with two other top-five performances in European tour events. The Australian Open win gets him into the Open Championship, and his performance is likely to earn him a spot in the PGA Championship.

He would have to qualify for the U.S. Open, unless he were to win the Masters. The 25-year-old Chilean is getting plenty of attention with his two victories this year.

"I'm more than happy about the way I'm playing," Niemann said. "I just want to keep on the same path. I'm pretty proud of the way I played all week."

2024 Cognizant Classic leaderboard, scores: Round 4 leaks into Monday after lengthy weather delay

Pga national will host one more day of action with many golfers yet to start their final rounds.

austin-eckroat-final-round-cognizant-2024-g.jpg

An extended suspension of play Sunday threw a wrinkle into the final round of the 2024 Cognizant Classic at PGA National. The final pairing of Shane Lowry and David Skinns completed just five holes and will come back to the par-71 layout Monday morning with Round 4 set to resume at 8 a.m. ET.

Fellow 54-hole leader, Austin Eckroat, has grabbed hold of the tournament lead, standing 15 under thanks to a couple birdies across his first seven holes. Erik Van Rooyen, who carded a final-round 63 to finish the tournament at 14 under, set the clubhouse lead and is likely to fall short given the number of birdies PGA National is yielding.

By the time the leading trio began their final rounds, Van Rooyen had already made a massive move early in his final round, turning in a 7-under 28. The two-time PGA Tour winner made six birdies in a row at one point -- matching a personal best -- and recorded the lowest nine-hole score on the PGA Tour this season tying Jake Knapp from the Mexico Open and Wyndham Clark from the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Both of those players went onto win their respective tournaments, but Van Rooyen's path to the winner's circle will be decidedly more difficult given he has no holes remaining.

"I've got no expectations," Van Rooyen said with a smile. "If I'm within two and those boys are walking up to 15th tee box, I'll be here."

The South African has since been leap frogged by Eckroat, who is searching for his first PGA Tour victory. The sophomore on Tour has been making a habit of playing himself into the weekend mix; he previously held a 54-hole lead at the 2023 Byron Nelson and 36-hole lead at this year's Sony Open.

While he was unable to convert those leads into victories, Eckroat has compiled experience which he plans to put to good use on Monday. As it stands, he was the only one of the three 54-hole leaders in red figures Sunday at 2 under as Skinns has dropped two shots in his first five holes and Lowry made bogey on the par-3 4th.

Here's a look at the top of the leaderboard entering the final day of the 2024 Cognizant Classic.

1. Austin Eckroat: -15 (7) 2. Erik Van Rooyen: -14 (F) 3. Jake Knapp: -13 (15) T4. Keith Mitchell: -12 (F) T4. Billy Horschel: -12 (17) T4. Alex Noren: -12 (12) T4. Shane Lowry: -12 (5) T8. Tyson Alexander: -11 (F) T8. Doug Ghim: -11 (F) T8. Garrick Higgo: -11 (17) T8. Nico Echavarria: -11 (13) T8. Kevin Yu: -11 (8) T8. Martin Laird: -11 (7) T8. David Skinss: -11 (5)
