We may still be enjoying the lush greenery of summer, but just around the corner is fall foliage season, when vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows set landscapes ablaze.

For travelers hoping to catch a glimpse of the changing colors in the fall, there are opportunities for leaf-peeping well beyond New England . This year, head further north to Canada. As the temperature cools, various fall foliage destinations throughout the country emerge, with striking hues from coast to coast. Whether you're interested in a getaway to Montreal , a drive through British Columbia, or an Ontario visit, we cover 12 of the best places to enjoy fall foliage in Canada —plus, what else to do, and where to stay, once you're there.

Smith Falls, Ontario

The tree-lined UNESCO World Heritage Site Rideau Canal weaves its way through small towns all the way to Canada’s capital, Ottawa . The maple and oak trees glow bright red and orange, and the poplar trees turn yellow from late September to early October. Take a drive from Smith Falls to Merrickville along the Rideau Canal to get the best view of the leaves; or, if you’re feeling adventurous, sail through the intricate lock system. With Le Boat , even beginner skippers can navigate a houseboat on the oldest continuously-operated canal system in North America, docking at the locks operated by Parks Canada. The sailing season extends to early October, allowing passengers to have the best vantage of the leaves changing from the water.

Villa Eyrie Resort. view. room. hotel

Villa Eyrie Resort in British Columbia promises sweeping views of changing leaves below.

Saanich, British Columbia

Located just outside Victoria on Vancouver Island , The Buchart Gardens have been growing some of the brightest blooms for over a century, attracting visitors to the winding Rose Garden and intricate Japanese Garden among others. At this National Historic Site, the trees and shrubs surrounding The Sunken Garden turn gilded fall hues of orange, gold, and crimson come early September. To continue the nature escape, visit the district of Saanich to explore the rural side of Vancouver Island. For the best view, stay at Villa Eyrie and dine above the clouds at Alpina Restaurant , which offers a 180-degree view of the changing coastal rainforest trees from above.

Elk Island National Park, Alberta

Drive through the Elk Island Parkway or hike on the many trails within Elk Island National Park to catch a glimpse of Alberta’s colorful fall foliage in late September, when the aspen parkland foliage switches from green to bright oranges and yellows, shimmering in the soft autumn sun. After leaf peeping, swing by the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village , which tells the story of Ukrainian immigration that helped shape Alberta in the early 20th century in an open-air museum that recreates a small settlement.

Dawson City, Yukon

Timing your trip to see the leaves change in Yukon can be tricky as the window to see the fiery shades is brief. But if you time your trip just right (and have just a little bit of luck), you can see the brilliant fall foliage raging on the tundra from as early as mid-August, often peaking in the last week of August. Not only do the birch, aspen, and willow trees turn a range of yellow and orange hues, but the leaves of the tall fireweeds, foxtail grasses, and highbush cranberries change as well to create a kaleidoscope along the Dempster Highway and in Tombstone Territorial Park . For a different set of colors, stay up late for a glimpse of the Northern Lights that can be visible on clear nights from mid-August until spring.

Dakota Dunes Resort restaurant

The Dakota Dunes Resort's Moose Woods Home Fire Grill

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

See the leaves of Manitoban maples and box elders change color while learning about the region's Indigenous culture and heritage at Wanuskewin Heritage Park , just north of Saskatoon. The Heritage Park offers guided tours and culture, arts, and heritage-related experiences surrounded by some of the best natural landscapes adjacent to the South Saskatchewan River. Walk among the changing leaves in September on the park's walking trails, then continue your experience in nature by staying at the nearby Dakota Dunes Resort , located on the historic Whitecap Dakota Unceded Territory.

Riding Mountain National Park, Manitoba

Plan your visit to Riding Mountain National Park near the end of September to see the area's fall foliage in its prime. Walk on the floating boardwalks on Ominik Marsh Trail , encased by the changing colors of the birch trees, or go horseback riding on backcountry trails. For day trips into the park and cool fall days by the water, stay near Clear Lake at Elkhorn Resort or Lakehouse , or reserve an oTENTik —a rustic A-frame cabin with sleeping platforms and a woodstove—within the park.

Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

Head to Sault Ste. Marie to see the rugged beauty of Northern Ontario illuminated with the vivid colors of maple, birch and aspen tree in the fall, near the end of September. For a memorable autumn experience, snag a seat on the Agawa Canyon Tour train, which runs through early October: The large windows in the coach cars offer a picturesque view of the foliage as you chug past lakes, rivers, and expansive forests. While in town, there are also several lookout points nearby to see the fall foliage—hiking on Ila’s Loop to Robertson Cliffs, or through the trails at Kinsmen Park .

Mont Tremblant, Québec

Best known as a winter resort town, Mont Tremblant is an equally great spot to see the fall leaves change colors. From mid-September to late October, the sugar maple trees on the rolling Laurentian Mountains shift to fiery reds, bright yellows, and vibrant oranges, setting this region ablaze. For adventure travelers, there are plenty of off-season activities to enjoy during this time, including hiking, mountain biking, and water activities on milder days. For leisure travelers, reserve a room in the centrally-located Fairmont Tremblant or Le Westin Tremblant and take a stroll through the pedestrian village .

Miscou Island, New Brunswick

Trade the changing leaves on the trees for foliage beside the boardwalk: in New Brunswick, visitors can see the peat bogs on Miscou Island turn red. This small island in northern New Brunswick on the Gulf of St. Lawrence is connected to the mainland by a bridge through Lameque Island. With nearly half of the island covered in bogs, the flaming red color in the fall is hard to miss. Since the island is protected (in other words, there are no hotels), visitors often stay in a nearby town like Caraquet.

Benjamin Bridge's South Facing Vineyard

Wolfville, Nova Scotia

Combine a harvest season visit to Nova Scotia’s wine region near Wolfville with leaf-peeping around the Annapolis Valley, from the end of September until late October. Stop by local favorites like Benjamin Bridge or Domaine de Grand Pré for a taste of Tidal Bay appellation wine. For one of the best vistas of the fall foliage in the region, drive to the Blomidon Look-Off on top of North Mountain in Canning for an aerial view of the sprawling farmers’ fields lined with colorful orchards.

Dalvay-by-the-Sea, Prince Edward Island

Most years, the fall leaves on Price Edward Island don’t reach their full glow until the second week of October. Walk or cycle along part of the 170-mile Confederation Trail —which runs across the province from Tignish to Elmira—to see the foliage in a number of regions. Dalvay By the Sea is an upscale outdoor escape only 3.5 miles from Prince Edward National Park , known for its red cliffs and wind-sculpted dunes.

Corner Brook, Newfoundland & Labrador

Maple trees are abundant on Newfoundland’s west coast, making Corner Brook the perfect destination for a leaf-peeping trip. Fall foliage peaks in late September to early October, when the coniferous green trees stand out among the changing orange, yellow, and bright red birch and maple trees. To get to Corner Brook, fly into Deer Lake Regional Airport (YDF). While in town, plan a day trip to Gros Morne National Park and hike through the fjord, mountain ranges, and coastal trails—it's easily one of the best places to enjoy fall foliage in  Canada .

The Best Places to See Fall Colors in Canada

Canada is the second biggest country in the world by area, spanning from the Atlantic to the Pacific and northward into the Arctic Ocean. So while predicting exact fall foliage timing in an area as huge as Canada may be tricky, you can get a leg up on your fall vacation by visiting one of the prime viewing locations. While the western provinces of British Columbia and Alberta are home to some amazing forests, the intensity and pervasiveness of autumn color tend to be best in the eastern parts of Canada. So if the sole purpose of your visit is to see fall foliage, Ontario, Quebec, or the Maritime provinces are probably your best bet.

The Rocky Mountains: Alberta

martinagebarovska / Getty Images

In September and October, the days are warmish and dry in Alberta's Rocky Mountains. The summer crowds have gone home, providing a peaceful atmosphere as you drink in the reds and yellows of the sub-alpine larch and aspen trees. Try accessible spots near Banff National Park , which has mountains all around. One option is Johnston Canyon with its waterfalls, a creek, and limestone cliffs. Tunnel Mountain offers lovely views of Banff and Bow River. Or hike up from Lake Louise to Lake Agnes and warm up with a cup of tea at the historic 1905 Lake Agnus Tea House on top of the mountain.

Algonquin Park: Ontario

Jay Kerr / Getty Images

The size, beauty, and proximity to Toronto of this 2,955 square-mile park make Algonquin one of the most popular parks in Ontario. The oldest provincial park in Canada, it is comprised of dense forests and thousands of lakes and rivers that can only be explored by foot or canoe.

The maple trees are at their best at the end of September or early October, while aspens, tamaracks, and red oaks reach their peak in the middle or end of October. Consult the Algonquin Fall Colour Report for fall color activity and specific viewing spots.

Agawa Canyon: Ontario

James Smedley / Getty Images

The Agawa Canyon Tour Train , which runs north from Sault Ste. Marie in northern Ontario, is an excellent way to see the colors around the end of September and beginning of October. One train a day is available, taking passengers 228 miles round trip with views of gorgeous rivers, lakes, forests, and granite rocks. In the fall there's usually an hour and a half stop at Agawa Canyon Wilderness Park, which has a diversity of trails to four waterfalls and other beautiful spots.

Via Rail: Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia

inigoarza / Getty Images

There is nothing more spectacular or romantic than the dramatic changes autumn brings to the forests of Eastern Canada, and there's something also romantic about experiencing the colors by train. VIA Rail, Canada's national train service, offers a fall foliage vacation that features some of Canada's most dramatic viewing spots through popular cities such as Toronto, Montreal, Québec City, and Halifax.

The train has various scenic routes available all year for your family's enjoyment, including some that are geared toward fall foliage. The most popular train route in eastern Canada is the Windsor-Québec Corridor, which runs through major cities including Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and Québec City. While this one is great for moving around and surely offers some autumnal views, the scenery is mostly urban. For a truly spectacular ride, try the route from Montreal up north to Jonquière or Senneterre.

Niagara Parkway: Ontario

paul bica / Flickr

The historic Niagara River Parkway , or "River Road,” is the route that former U.K. Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill called "the prettiest Sunday afternoon drive in the world." This parkway follows the winding curves of the Niagara River, which divides Canada and the United States, all the way to the eponymous waterfall.

The loveliest stretch in autumn, between the small community of Queenston and the historic town of Niagara-on-the-Lake , usually reaches its pinnacle of color in early October. Of course, you'll want to visit world-famous Niagara Falls while you're in the area. Finish your day by enjoying a glass of wine from one of the many wineries in the area.

Bruce Peninsula: Ontario

SkyF / Getty Images

The Bruce Peninsula between Georgian Bay and Lake Huron is full of indigenous history and features one of the best portions of the Bruce Trail—an almost 500-mile hiking trail—comprised of splendid Ontario flora, fauna, and water vistas. Some of the trees are even more than 1,000 years old, although these are the coniferous trees that don't change color. But the trail provides plenty of deciduous specimens and in the autumn, especially from the end of September to the beginning of October, the colors are something to behold. Check the Ontario Parks Fall Colour Report for seasonal activity, great viewing spot suggestions, and park information.

Laurentian Mountains: Québec

Pierre Longnus / Getty Images

Québec is famous for its autumn colors because of the sugar maple trees. Also prevalent are the provincial yellow birch and the American beech. Try the Laurentian Mountains in southern Quebec—north of the St. Lawrence and Ottawa rivers—for one of the most beautiful displays of fall foliage in North America. Colors begin their peak at the end of September and continue until mid- to late-October in lower elevations and more southern locations.

The ski resort of Mont Tremblant is one of the most popular places in the area for leaf-peeping since it's just 80 miles outside of Montreal. However, it also fills up with locals on the peak weekends and the curvy mountain highways can quickly turn into a traffic nightmare.

Prince Edward Island

John Sylvester / Getty Images

Prince Edward Island (PEI) forests have an exceptional range of colors in autumn. The warm waters of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the Northumberland Strait give PEI a relatively moderate climate and help create one of the longest fall foliage periods in northeastern North America. In addition, PEI's forests are free of bears, deer, and moose, ensuring a safe, hunter-free environment.

Access the island from New Brunswick via Confederation Bridge, the longest bridge in Canada and the world's longest bridge that crosses ice-covered water.

Cabot Trail, Cape Breton Island: Nova Scotia

Barrett & MacKay / Getty Images

Hailed as one of the world's most beautiful drives, the Cabot Trail winds around the northern shore of Cape Breton Island  and rewards fall color seekers in a spectacular way. Fiery reds, oranges, crimsons, and golds blanket the highlands and reach their peak the first or second week of October. The route also passes directly through the stunning landscapes of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, which is all the more beautiful at this transitionary time of year.

Enjoy the Celtic heritage of Cape Breton through the locals, food, and music, and the seasonal Celtic Colours International Festival held in mid-October each year is the perfect way to do that.

Fundy Coastal Drive: New Brunswick

Robert McGouey / Getty Images

The Bay of Fundy spans from Maine's northern coastal area into Canada, between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Like the Cabot Trail, the Fundy Coastal Drive is another outstanding maritime journey. See some of the highest tides in the world and enjoy the vivacious reds and deep pumpkin oranges. The colors are at their peak the first two weeks of October during Canada’s Thanksgiving weekend, which is a smaller celebration than that of the U.S. Tree variety and colors are similar to those in New England, but with a fraction of the crowds that inundate the U.S. Northeast.

5 best fall foliage cruises in New England, Canada and beyond

Erica Silverstein

If your social media feeds are blowing up with beautiful pictures of fall foliage, you're likely feeling the urge to set out on your own leaf-peeping trip. Sure, you could plan an epic road trip, complete with traffic jams and overpriced, overcrowded tourist traps. Or, you could take a fall foliage cruise.

From a cruise ship, you can enjoy the autumnal hues of the Canada and New England coastline as you sail between northeastern U.S. homeports like New York and Boston and Canada's Montreal or Quebec City. Book shore excursions for a more relaxing day out; the bus driver will navigate the traffic along tree-lined byways to scenic vistas, and your mealtimes will be pre-arranged (or held on board your ship's multiple dining venues).

If you'd rather explore fall's colors outside of the Northeast, a few cruise lines will take you to fall foliage destinations in other parts of the U.S., too.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

It's likely too late to arrange a 2023 Canada and New England cruise, but channel your FOMO and book your 2024 getaway so next year you can be the one inspiring jealousy with your gorgeous scenic photography. Here, we present the five best fall foliage cruises you should consider in New England, Canada and beyond.

7-day Canada and New England Discovery cruise on Holland America

fall color tours canada

Holland America 's 1,964-passenger Zuiderdam is a delightfully midsize ship, so you don't have to worry about crowds as you sail between Boston and Quebec City. The ship starts sailing this route in late August, but for the best leaf peeping you'll want to book one of the two October departures.

Ports of call include Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; Sydney and Halifax, Nova Scotia; and Portland or Bar Harbor, Maine. Take your pick of scenic drives or strolls through gardens or along hiking paths, camera at the ready. On board, spend your evenings rocking out to live music or enjoying a leisurely meal of steak or seafood at the Pinnacle Grill.

Best for: Holland America attracts mainly retirees and couples who appreciate the line's focus on fine dining and live performances. Zuiderdam's itinerary is ideal for anyone who doesn't mind flying in and out of different cities in order to travel farther north into Canada than the one-way sailings.

7-day Canada and New England cruise on Princess Cruises

fall color tours canada

For an easy round-trip New York cruise that leans more into New England than Canada, consider Princess Cruises ' weeklong October sailings on the 3,660-passenger Enchanted Princess. Choose from itineraries with four or five ports, including Newport, Rhode Island; Boston; Bar Harbor; Halifax; and (only on certain sailings) Saint John, New Brunswick.

If seascapes are your thing, don't miss the beautiful coastal landscape by the Bay of Fundy (from Saint John) or Peggy's Cove in Nova Scotia. Head to the hills in Bar Harbor for elevated views or escape to sea with a harbor cruise from Newport.

Best for: Princess Cruises also attracts mature couples and lovers of classic cruising, but the 2019-debuted Enchanted Princess is much larger and bigger than Holland America's Zuiderdam. Kick back with the line's signature Movies Under the Stars (complete with blankets for fall nights in New England) or enjoy multiple specialty restaurants devoted to Italian specialties, steakhouse fare and seafood. Bundle up for a romantic breakfast on your balcony while the colorful coastline passes by.

7-night Canada cruise on Royal Caribbean

fall color tours canada

Combine an easy Boston round-trip sailing with a fall foliage cruise focused more on Canadian than New England ports with Royal Caribbean 's seven-night voyages on the 1,992-passenger Grandeur of the Seas, setting sail throughout October 2024. Most itineraries call in Portland, Maine; Saint John; Sydney; and Halifax.

Grandeur of the Seas is one of Royal Caribbean's older and smaller ships, so don't go in expecting a humongous megaship with wild top-deck amenities (a good thing or not, depending on your style). You'll still find plenty of dining options (including sushi and teppanyaki hijinks at Izumi), the line's signature circular Viking Crown Lounge and – perfect for fall weather — an indoor, adults-only solarium.

Best for: Royal Caribbean fans seeking a midsize ship experience with fewer children on board should book this cruise. Anyone looking for a round-trip cruise to Canada that doesn't require a passport will appreciate the convenient Boston departure port (with plenty of beautiful fall foliage on its own) and three ports calls in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

7-night Puget Sound and San Juan Islands cruise on American Cruise Lines

fall color tours canada

Canada and New England aren't the only regions of the U.S. known for their fall foliage. American Cruise Lines offers several small-ship sailings in October to other leaf-peeping regions, including the Hudson River Valley, the Upper Mississippi and the Chesapeake Bay.

But for something completely different, why not try the line's seven-night Puget Sound and San Juan Islands cruise, round-trip from Seattle on the 90-passenger American Spirit and 170-passenger American Constellation?

Your itinerary will take you to Anacortes, Friday Harbor, Port Angeles (gateway to Victoria, British Columbia, and Olympic National Park), Port Townsend and Poulsbo, Washington, with a day spent cruising around the San Juan Islands. Take advantage of the Fidalgo Island walking trails near Anacortes and don't miss the photogenic Deception Pass nearby. Gaze at the Olympic and Cascade mountains in their fall glory and enjoy the fall weather in historic waterfront towns.

Best for: Travelers looking for a different destination for their fall foliage cruise, but also cruisers who prioritize time on shore over time on the ship. American Cruise Lines' ships are tiny, just four to six decks, with amenities limited to a restaurant, a couple of lounges, small fitness areas and sun deck, perhaps with a putting green. Be prepared to entertain yourself in the evenings — or go to bed early so you're energized for a full day in port nearly every day. Also, know that these ships generally draw an older, retiree crowd.

12-day Canada and New England Fall Foliage cruise on Seabourn

fall color tours canada

Smaller ships can visit more off-the-beaten-path ports than their big-ship counterparts. Seabourn 's 458-passenger Seabourn Quest sails 12-day cruises between New York and Montreal, stopping in Trois-Rivieres and Saguenay, Quebec, with scenic cruising along the Saguenay Fjord. The ship also visits Quebec City, Charlottetown, Halifax, Boston and Provincetown, Massachusetts.

This is also one of the best fall foliage cruises if you're looking for an all-inclusive voyage in luxurious surroundings. On Seabourn Quest, every cabin is a suite with a view (not to mention a walk-in closet and spacious bathroom with tub). You can enjoy gourmet cuisine by Thomas Keller, complimentary wine and cocktails, and a friendly crew that will go above and beyond for you.

Best for: Luxury lovers who wish to be pampered on their leaf-peeping vacation will enjoy this nearly two-week cruise around Canada and New England. The extended itinerary features several days at sea to enjoy the ship's spa or delicious afternoon tea service, as well as some lesser-visited ports and an overnight in Halifax. It's ideal for travelers who want to make the most of their fall Northeast trip.

Bottom line

You might be surprised how much choice you have for late-September and October fall foliage cruises. In addition to Seabourn, all the major luxury cruise lines dedicate a few cruises to this region — including such lines as Silversea Cruises , Regent Seven Seas Cruises , Windstar Cruises , Oceania Cruises and Crystal . Big ships like NCL's Norwegian Breakaway also get into the leaf-peeping action.

Here, we've picked the best fall foliage cruises for different itinerary configurations and ship styles. They might be our favorites, but only you know which combination of ports and onboard experience is the perfect match for your travel style.

A great adventure with truly experienced and professional guides, Will & Savio. They really knew their stuff and kept up a running commentary as we moved along, sharing local information and history with their clients. The route was all the advertising made it out to be and even better, accommodation and meals were brilliant and more than adequate. The attention to detail and making sure that the clients were well informed of what was coming up on the route was well appreciated. The stop and lookout points along the way are perfect and well thought out. Highly recommend this tour and the professionalism of the staff and company.

Wonders of the Maritimes & Scenic Cape Breton (11 destinations)

Bus driver and tour guides were excellent: very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Breakfasts were fine, most lunches and dinners provided to us were good, as well. All hotels, with the exception of the Silver Dart, were excellent. At the Silver Dart, we had to request a room change because of the heavy mildew in the room. The carpeting was also stained in several spots. This hotel needs updating and dehumidification. This was the only hotel that was far from the center of town, which made dining out a challenge, and was far below our standards. We met wonderful people and even exchanged phone numbers with a few. Despite the disappointment with the Silver Dart, the overall tour, meals, accommodations and fellow passengers made up for it! Excellent overall!

Rockies Western Canada Iconic Sites: 7-Day Tour

We had a very good time with this tour as there were only 6 of us! Felt like a private tour instead of group tour. The hotels provided were excellent and the breakfast every morning were so good and substantial that lunch was not required. Overall, the service had been excellent except for one item which was included in the itinerary, chairlifts at Sun Peak which was missed due to timing of arrival. Timing of the tour could be better managed although the guide was giving a lot of flexibility. It wld be better to be more tight on setting time and arriving at destinations earlier.

Itinerary was great, scenery was beautiful, and our guide was fun. I was the only male in the group with my wife and 11 other females and it worked out fine. Everyone was very congenial, and the diversity of the group added to the experience. Only thing I would change would be the accommodations in Vancouver. While the hotel was fine it was very far from the downtown and sights, so we spent most of our time the last day in the van in traffic. Overall, it was a fantastic trip.

Just returned from the 5 day Premium tour of the Rockies. What an amazing trip! We traveled in a very comfortable bus under the guidance of of our exceptional guide Richelle. Richelle was a wealth of knowledge sharing interesting information on each area we visited, we learnt so much from her about the areas we explored. The trip follows absolutely breathtaking landscapes. The accommodation choices were wonderful and it was good having this all organised, made the holiday a breeze for us . It was spectacular having breakfast organised at the top of the gondola in Banff , felt very special as well as all the other adventures Richelle took us on. Having the tour all organised for us took the stress out of us having to organise things , we had the adventure of a life time and loved every moment. Highly recommend this tour if you have limited time and want to visit as much as possible between Vancouver and Banff.
I have great time. Dusty is the best tour manager. I have very good first camping trip.

10 places in Canada with the most breathtaking fall colours

Latest Videos

Fall in Canada is nearly here with it colder weather, pumpkin-spice and exceedingly breathtaking natural beauty. Every year we look forward to the reappearance of Canada's stunning, multicoloured landscapes.

Mid-September to October is the perfect time to do a bit of outdoor exploring if you don't want to miss the bright reds and yellows. So get outside before winter comes a-knocking and take in all this colourful season has to offer.

Here are some places across Canada with some seriously breathtaking fall foliage.

Killarney Provincial Park, Ontario

With more than 50 picturesque lakes and the stunning La Cloche Mountains, there's no wonder the Group of Seven painters were so inspired here. Although pretty all year round, the park is definitely most breathtaking once the leaves start changing colour.

Goldstream Provincial Park, British Columbia

Located just outside Victoria, this park is home to an old-growth temperate rainforest and some of the most beautiful fall foliage on Vancouver Island. Every October there is also an annual salmon run, during which time thousands of fish return to the Goldstream River.

Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park, Saskatchewan

This park straddles the Alberta-Saskatchewan boundary making it the only interprovincial park in the country. It boasts lush forest, prairie land and towering hills that will bring you up to the highest point in Saskatchewan. The views get even better with a bit of colour.

Riding Mountain National Park, Manitoba

The green forests in this national park turn to shades of magnificent gold in the fall. There's also a chance you'll spot some wildlife. Moose, bison, elk and black bears are just some of the animals that call this park home.

Cape Breton Highlands National Park, Nova Scotia

Found on Cape Breton Island , this national park simply can't be beat, especially when it comes to fall views. The Cabot Trail scenic highway follows the coast and offers sweeping ocean views. The vast Cape Breton Plateau contains hills, river canyons, valleys and forests to explore.

Tombstone Territorial Park, Yukon

At this park in the Yukon, you can watch the northern lights, climb rugged mountain peaks and take in incredible views of hills painted in red and yellow. Keep in mind that c amping is the only option if you want to stay overnight. Dawson City is the nearest community, about an hour away.

La Mauricie National Park, Quebec

This park is home to the world-renowned Laurentian Mountains that are among the most popular destinations for leaf peepers. Visit in late September and you'll see the rolling hills ablaze with bright fall hues. There are also over 150 lakes of various sizes throughout the park.

Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario

Another of the Group of Seven's favourites, Algonquin is easily one of the most beloved parks in Ontario. The fall colours alone make the park worthwhile, especially if you time it right to catch the spectacular colours from mid-September to mid-October.

Explore the vibrant colours of canada.

In Canada, we’re so glad to live in a world where there are Octobers (at least Canadian author L.M Montgomery thought this was the case). The enchanting dapples of red and golden light under beech, birch, maple and poplar trees make Fall a magical time to visit Canada. The air is getting just a little cooler the nights more crisp. This transitional time is just right, the summer crowds are ebbing away and you get to catch Canada in its finest golden hours.

Ottawa Fall Colours: The Best Places and Day Trips

Ottawa Fall Colours: The Best Places and Day Trips

The fall colours in Ontario and Quebec are brilliant come October. Peak season is typically around the middle of October, and if there’s a nice day and a chance to get out and enjoy the fall colours in Ottawa then you definitely want to take advantage.

This year I’ve visited some fall favourites that I have visited before, and also had the chance to go to a few new places!

It’s very easy to get swept in to the excitement of seeing Gatineau Park during Fall Rhapsody. The Gatineau Park is beautiful (and included at the end of the post) but it’s also  insanely busy during Fall Rhapsody to the point where it is sometimes not possible to reach the park. That’s why this post is mostly about all of the  other  amazing places that you can go to see the Ottawa fall colours.

Part of Ottawa’s Greenbelt, Mer Bleue is a unique ecosystem in the South end of the city. Walk the board walk through the regions only bog and you will see fall colours top to bottom. What makes Mer Bleue unique is that there are plants and bushes low to the ground the change colours too!

The Dominion Arboretum + Fletcher Wildlife Garden

The Dominion Arboretum is one of those places that makes you feel like you’ve entirely left the city even though it’s right in the middle. Walk the 3km + loop along the Canal and up through the Arboretum and you will be immersed in the trees and up above them with a spectacular view of the park. Pop in to Fletcher Wildlife gardens right next door to see more variety of plants, birds, frogs, and nature. Pro tip: I like to take the O-train to Carleton, walk through the Arboretum, and then catch the train at Carling on the other side to get back home.

Getting there: take the train (Line 2) to Carleton or Carling Station. View on Google Maps .

Cost: parking (dependent on time of day) fees may apply if driving. Free access.

It’s possibly that fall is the most spectacular time to visit Omega Park. The elk calls are their loudest in fall, so load up your car with carrots and go pass them out. This time of year is great for photos and it’s a little quieter than visiting in the summer. Omega Park at night is also running throughout the fall.
