Chattanooga airport buys more property as boardings rise nearly 13% this year

As air travel in Chattanooga nears its pre-pandemic heights again, the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport Authority is moving to buy another 6.8 acres along Lee Highway on the west end of Lovell Field to help the airport expand its future aeronautical services.

The city airport board voted Monday to acquire what was once part of the former Herb Adcox Chevrolet dealership at 5721 Lee Highway for $6 million. The site includes 55,000 square feet of building space and backs up to the airport property and is near other properties previously acquired by the airport authority on Lee Highway, including the former Sky Zoo nightclub bought by the airport in 2021 and later demolished.

"We truly believe that this property is essential for our future growth," airport President and CEO April Cameron said about the former car dealership. "Based on its location and the property appraisals we had done, we feel it is certainly worth it to acquire this property at this time."

The acquisition will be funded from part of the airport's $15 million of unrestricted reserve funds, Cameron said.

The airport authority has no immediate plans for the property, and Cameron said the site will require about $100,000 in remediation work. But she said the building could provide temporary storage of some airport equipment while future development options are pursued.

Over time, expanding the airport footprint with the new site could help provide more runway options and help increase general aviation and hangar operations at Lovell Field.

"This has been on the radar for this board for a number of years," airport authority Chair Jim Hall said. "This is a significant purchase and an important opportunity for the expansion of our aeronautical services as we continue to grow."

Last month, Chattanooga Airport opened a $28 million addition to the passenger concourse  — the biggest expansion of Chattanooga's airport facilities in decades — at an event that drew more than 400 people from across Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia.

Airport boardings up

The airport also reported Monday that the number of passengers boarding flights at Lovell Field in the first three months of 2024 was up nearly 13% from the same period a year ago.

During January, February and March of this year, 119,699 people boarded flights in Chattanooga, or 13,627 more than those boarded in the same period of 2023. The increase in passenger volume at Lovell Field continued the increase after boardings fell dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic four years ago.

Cameron said boardings at Chattanooga Airport are still slightly below the 2019 peak before the pandemic, but she said 85% of the available seats on Chattanooga flights were booked in the first three months of the year. Cameron said the number of airline seats on Chattanooga outbound flights is expected to soon return to the 2019 levels with the addition this fall of another daily flight between Chattanooga and Dallas.

"We saw solid positive trends in January and February, and our enplanements were down only slightly from a year ago in March," Cameron said. "We think we will continue to see a positive trend in boardings this year."

DETROIT (AP) — On the eve of a vote on union representation at Volkswagen’s Tennessee factory, Gov. Bill Lee and five other southern governors are telling workers that voting for a union will put jobs in jeopardy.

About 4,300 workers at VW’s plant in Chattanooga will start voting Wednesday on representation by the United Auto Workers union. Vote totals are expected to be tabulated Friday night by the National Labor Relations Board.

The union election is the first test of the UAW’s efforts to organize nonunion auto factories nationwide following its success winning big raises last fall after going on strike against Detroit automakers Ford, General Motors and Jeep maker Stellantis.

The governors said in a statement Tuesday that they have worked to bring good-paying jobs to their states.

“We are seeing in the fallout of the Detroit Three strike with those automakers rethinking investments and cutting jobs,” the statement said. “Putting businesses in our states in that position is the last thing we want to do.”

Lee said in a statement that Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott have signed on to the statement. The offices of Abbott, Ivey, Kemp and Reeves confirmed their involvement, and McMaster posted the statement on his website.

The governors said they want to continue to grow manufacturing in their states, but a successful union drive will “stop this growth in its tracks, to the detriment of American workers.”

The UAW declined comment.

After a series of strikes against Detroit automakers last year, UAW President Shawn Fain said it would simultaneously target more than a dozen nonunion auto plants including those run by Tesla, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, Kia, Toyota, Honda, and others.

The drive covers nearly 150,000 workers at factories largely in the South, where the union thus far has had little success in recruiting new members.

Earlier this month a majority of workers at a Mercedes-Benz plant near Tuscaloosa, Alabama, filed papers with the NLRB to vote on UAW representation.

The UAW pacts with Detroit automakers include 25% pay raises by the time the contracts end in April of 2028. With cost-of-living increases, workers will see about 33% in raises for a top assembly wage of $42 per hour, or more than $87,000 per year, plus thousands in annual profit sharing.

VW said Tuesday that its workers can make over $60,000 per year not including an 8% attendance bonus. The company says it pays above the median household income in the area.

Volkswagen has said it respects the workers’ right to a democratic process and to determine who should represent their interests. “We will fully support an NLRB vote so every team member has a chance to vote in privacy in this important decision,” the company said.

Some workers at the VW plant, who make Atlas SUVs and ID.4 electric vehicles, said they want more of a say in schedules, benefits, pay and more.

The union has come close to representing workers at the VW plant in two previous elections. In 2014 and 2019, workers narrowly rejected a factorywide union under the UAW .

Republican governors say the UAW's unionization push will 'threaten our jobs and the values we live by'

Six Republican governors are pushing back against the United Auto Workers’ big unionization drive in southern car factories . The governors of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas issued a joint statement Tuesday decrying the UAW’s push to represent autoworkers in their states.

“As governors, we have a responsibility to our constituents to speak up when we see special interests looking to come into our state and threaten our jobs and the values we live by,” they said.

This year, workers at a Mercedes-Benz plant in Alabama and a Volkswagen plant in Tennessee have sought UAW representation, and both facilities will be holding unionization votes this week.

The UAW has sought to grow its membership beyond its traditional stronghold among workers for Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis — the so-called “Big Three” American car companies — after its strikes last year secured big pay increases and other benefits. In February, the union said it would be dedicate $40 million over the next two years for the unionization drive.

But the southern governors warned Tuesday that the rise of organized labor in their states — which have some of the lowest rates of unionization in the country — might lead to layoffs.

“The experience in our states is when employees have a direct relationship with their employers, that makes for a more positive working environment,” said the statement from Govs. Kay Ivey of Alabama, Brian Kemp of Georgia, Tate Reeves of Mississippi, Henry McMaster of South Carolina, Bill Lee of Tennessee, and Greg Abbott of Texas.

All six states have so-called  right-to-work laws that make it harder for unions to collect the dues that fund their collective bargaining activity. In Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee, the policy is enshrined in their state constitutions.

The Economic Policy Institute suggests that “unions threaten the Southern economic development model” that traces its origins to slavery “because they have historically been the primary counterweight against businesses seeking to keep wages and benefits low.”

The Mercedes and Volkswagen union pushes are not the first time that the UAW has tried to unionize in the south. It failed to win votes at the Volkswagen facility in 2014 and 2019 . But a win this week would mark a major shift in southern labor relations.

A mongst the buzz for the 2024 solar eclipse , travelers have already been gearing up to get a good view of the next alignment event. The total solar eclipse of April 8th was marked with millions of people scrambling to acquire special eclipse glasses, so they could avoid eye damage from viewing the event. NASA has predicted that there will be another total solar eclipse n August 12th 2026. Eclipse chasers and astronomy fans are encouraged to make an event of the 2026 eclipse. Some people may even need to plan a strategic trip overseas since only a partial eclipse will be visible in some places. Greenland 

Greenland is a location that allows visa-free tourism for U.S. passport holders. But in general, travelers can visit without a visa. They just need to hold a valid passport that does not expire for at least six months after exiting the country. Travelers can only stay for up to 90 days.  

So for the people who got to see the best views of the 2024 eclipse, there is no reason to miss out on the next one. So, this destination is a place that will not be very hard to plan a visit to. The estimated weather during August of 2026 should be around 40 degrees (fahrenheit). Greenland also does not get much sun during this time. This means that travelers visiting Greenland for the eclipse of 2026 should like the cold. 

Iceland 

Iceland also allows tourism without a visa. Iceland requires that travelers have sufficient funds and have a returning flight ticket. People can stay in Iceland for up to 90 days for either tourism or business reasons. 

Near the west end of Iceland is said to be the best place to observe an eclipse. There are sure to be special eclipse tours around the area so travelers should keep a lookout for unique experiences. Iceland has views of another natural phenomenon, the Northern Lights, so travelers may get to see both in one trip. 

Spain 

Spain is another destination where travelers can freely visit without a visa. Travelers can enter Spain for up to 90 days for tourism or business. The passports of travelers must be valid for at least three months after the predicted travel. 

There has even been talk of cruises near Spain. The eclipse will definitely make a welcome addition to the unforgettable coasts of Spain. But if travelers want to be on the beach while they gaze at the stars, they should make sure they are on the northern and southeastern coasts. The chances of a clear sky are the best in northern Spain. 

Portugal 

Finally, travelers are free to enjoy a tourism visit to Portugal visa free. This is possible due to the Schengen Agreement , which applies to all of the listed eclipse locations. Since the visa free travel is applicable to all of the eclipse viewing locations, a European tour might be ideal.

There will be changes that apply to travelers from the United States to Europe starting 2025. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will require electronic preauthorization for travel. This will apply to all four of the viewing countries.

PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Donald Trump offered a political lifeline Friday to House Speaker Mike Johnson , saying the beleaguered GOP leader is doing a “very good job,” and tamping down the far-right forces led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene trying to oust him from office.

Trump and Johnson appeared side-by-side at the ex-president’s Mar-a-Lago club, a rite of passage for the new House leader as he hitches himself, and his GOP majority, to the indicted Republican Party leader ahead of the November election .

“I stand with the speaker,” Trump said at an evening press conference at his gilded private club.

Trump said he thinks Johnson, of Louisiana, is “doing a very good job – he’s doing about as good as you’re going to do.”

“We’re getting along very well with the speaker — and I get along very well with Marjorie,” Trump said.

But Trump flashed some criticism over efforts to oust the speaker calling it “unfortunate,” saying there are “much bigger problems” right now.

The visit was arranged as a joint announcement on new House legislation to require proof of citizenship for voting , but the trip itself is significant for both. Johnson needed Trump to temper hard-line threats to evict him from office . And Trump benefits from the imprimatur of official Washington dashing to Florida to embrace his comeback bid for the White House and his tangled election lies .

“It is the symbolism,” said Charlie Sykes, a conservative commentator and frequent Trump critic.

“There was a time when the Speaker of the House of Representatives was a dominant figure in American politics,” he said. “Look where we are now, where he comes hat in hand to Mar-a-Lago.”

While the moment captured the fragility of the speaker’s grip on the gavel, just six months on the job, it also put on display his evolving grasp of Trump-era politics as the Republicans in Congress align with the “Make America Great Again” movement powering the former president’s re-election bid.

Johnson and Trump underscored their alliance Friday by using similar wording to describe one part of their campaign strategy — pummeling President Joe Biden with alarmist language over what Republicans claim is a “migrant invasion.”

By linking the surge of migrants coming to the U.S. with the upcoming election, Trump and Johnson raised the specter of noncitizens from voting — even though it’s already a federal felony for a noncitizen to cast a ballot in a federal election and exceedingly rare .

Trump called America a “dumping ground” for migrants coming to the U.S., and revived pressure on Biden to “close the border.”

The speaker nodded along. “It could, if there are enough votes, affect the presidential election,” warned Johnson, who had played a key role in challenging the 2020 election that Trump lost to Biden, previewing potential 2024 arguments.

In fact, Trump had made similar claims of illegal voting in 2016 but the commission he appointed to investigate the issue disbanded without identifying a single case . A previous voter crackdown risked striking actual citizens from the voting rolls.

Ahead of the meeting, the Trump campaign sent a background paper that echoed language from the racist great replacement conspiracy theory to suggest that Biden and Democrats are engaging in what Trump’s campaign called “a willful and brazen attempt to import millions of new voters.”

Some liberal cities like San Francisco have begun to allow noncitizens to vote in a few local elections. But there’s no evidence of significant numbers of immigrants violating federal law by casting illegal ballots.

Afterward, Trump’s team said the speaker agreed to hold a series of public committee meetings over the next two months ahead of the new House legislation.

Greene, a top Trump ally, said on social media that while she is “working as hard as possible” to elect Trump, “I do not support Speaker Johnson.”

In the Trump era, the sojourns by Republican leaders to his private club in Palm Beach, Florida, have become defining moments, amplifying the lopsided partnership as the former president commandeers the party in sometimes humiliating displays of power.

Such was the case when Kevin McCarthy , then the House GOP leader, trekked to Mar-a-Lago after having been critical of the defeated president after the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol. A cheery photo was posted afterward, a sign of their mending relationship.

Johnson proposed the idea of coming to Mar-a-Lago weeks before Greene filed her motion to vacate him from the speaker’s office, just as another group of hardliners had previously ousted McCarthy. The visit comes days before the former president’s criminal trial on hush money charges gets underway next week in New York City.

The speaker’s own political future depends on support — or at least not opposition — from the “Make America Great Again” Republicans who are aligned with Trump but creating much of the House dysfunction that has brought work there to a halt.

Johnson commands the narrowest majority in modern times and a single quip from the former president can derail legislation. He was once a Trump skeptic, but the two men now talk frequently.

“I think it’s an emerging relationship,” said Rep. Ryan Zinke, R-Mont., who served as interior secretary in the Trump administration.

Even still, Trump urged Republicans this week to “kill” a national security surveillance bill that Johnson had personally worked to pass, contributing to a sudden defeat that sent the House spiraling. The legislation was approved Friday in a do-over but only after Johnson provided his own vote before departing for Florida.

Johnson understands he needs Trump’s backing to conduct almost any business in the House — including his next big priority, providing U.S. aid to Ukraine to fight Russia’s invasion.

In a daring move, the speaker is working both sides to help Ukraine, talking directly to the White House on the national security package that is at risk of collapse with Trump’s opposition. Greene is warning of a snap vote to oust Johnson from leadership if he allows any U.S. assistance to flow to the overseas ally.

“We’re looking at it,” Trump said about the national security package.

On the issue of election integrity, though, Johnson is leading his House GOP majority to embrace Trump’s lies about a stolen election and laying the groundwork for 2024 challenges.

Trump continues to insist the 2020 election was marred by fraud, even though no evidence has emerged in the last four years to support his claims and every state in the nation certified their results as valid.

As he runs to reclaim the White House, Trump has essentially taken over the Republican National Committee, turning the campaign apparatus toward his priorities. He supported Michael Whatley to lead the RNC, which created a new “Election Integrity Division” and says it is working to hire thousands of lawyers across the country.

Tired of the infighting and wary of another dragged-out brawl like the monthlong slugfest last year to replace McCarthy, few Republicans are backing Greene’s effort to remove Johnson, for now.

But if Trump signals otherwise, that could all change.
