Getting to the Cape Liberty Cruise Port Without a Car (Port Transportation)

Flying into New York for your cruise? Or maybe you simply don’t want to deal with the headache and expense of dealing with parking your car. No matter the reason, if you’re needing transportation from area airports or hotels to Cape Liberty, then we have you covered.

closest airport to cape liberty nj cruise port

The good news is that in a city with a mature transportation network like New York, you have a number of options in getting to the port. And if you’re overwhelmed with trying to get around the city, don’t worry, we have you covered with exactly how to get from the city to Cape Liberty.

As for convenience, it’s hard to beat transportation network companies like Uber and Lyft. By downloading the app, you can call a car on demand, anywhere in the New York/New Jersey area.

Rates for Uber/Lyft are roughly in line with their taxi counterparts, but it does depend on where you are coming from and where you are going.

For example, if you are flying (or staying) in New York and sailing from Cape Liberty, then you’ll be charged extra for your car going from New York to New Jersey or vice versa. Uber and Lyft charge $20 extra for going between the two states . Certain bridges and tunnels can also add to the cost.

Because of these extra charges, if you are headed to Cape Liberty (in New Jersey) from anywhere in New York, the cost of the trip is considerably higher.

If you can, it’s a good idea to take public transportation (see the Public Transportation section below) to get from New York over to New Jersey. Then, you can take an Uber/Lyft for about $20 the rest of the way to the cruise port. This can save you a fortune.

Below, we’ve listed their estimated prices from the areas around town to the Cape Liberty Cruise Port.

Keep in mind that these prices are per car, not per person.

If you are considering using a rideshare service, be sure to read more details about them here .

When you think of New York, one of the most iconic images is of a person waiting on the side of a busy street hailing a yellow taxi. With thousands of taxis in the city, they are a popular (and highly visible) way to get around.

If you are coming from the Newark airport to Cape Liberty, then picking up a cab at the airport is easy as you’ll head to the taxi station where you can hop in. If you are staying in New York, it can be a little more challenging.

New York taxis can decide whether or not to offer a ride to New Jersey. You will negotiate the flat fee before you get in the car.

You can see the estimated taxi fare from popular areas to Cape Liberty in the chart above. If you are interested in seeing the estimated fare from your specific location, visit this helpful page to calculate a fare .

Cruise Line Shuttles

One option is to book a transfer via your cruise line. Since the lines have many cruisers that fly into town to sail out of a port, they offer transportation services between the airport and cruise port.

However, we generally recommend other methods of getting to the port.

The issue is that transfers tend to be expensive, and don’t run on your schedule. For example, you can expect a transfer for one person from Newark to Cape Liberty run about $30 per person (one way) based on historic prices. That’s roughly the cost of an Uber or taxi, which can seat multiple people for the same amount.

As well, there are multiple major airports in the area, and they may not all be serviced by a cruise line transfer. According to the representative we talked to, there was no service between New York’s JFK or LaGuardia airports and Cape Liberty (although that could change).

Cruise transfers are also limited in that they operate only on the day of sailing and only go between the airport and cruise port. So if you come in a day or two early to visit New York or are staying at a hotel in the area, then the cruise line transfer isn’t a viable option.

If you are still interested in a transfer, contact your cruise line directly to learn more.

Independent Shuttles/Car Services

If you are traveling with a larger group to Cape Liberty, then your best bet is likely to look for an independent shuttle or private car service. These providers can offer private service to the port, usually for less per person than a taxi or other service, assuming you have seven or more passengers.

To be frank, the number of shuttles and car services in the New York area is extremely high. That means we can’t list them all here. Instead, we’ve rounded up a sample list of area companies to give you a good start to go from.

The prices quoted by these companies can vary widely depending on what sort of service you need and exactly where you are coming from. However, as a general rule expect it to be a better value the larger a group you need to transport. Be sure to shop around before selecting a service as it can save you considerable money.

One other thing to keep in mind is that the prices you are quoted won’t include gratuity, which can add on another 15-20% to your fare.

Public Transportation

Bayonne, New Jersey and the Cape Liberty port are served by Hudson-Bergen Light Rail . Specifically, the North Jersey Coast Line takes you from the Hoboken Terminal all the way to Cape Liberty.

If you are coming from Manhattan, you’ll need to take the PATH rail to the Hoboken Terminal. Then, you’ll transfer to light rail, which will drop you at the 34th Street Light Rail Station near the port. From there, you will need to call a taxi or Uber to take you the couple of miles down the port to the cruise terminal.

You can also simply take the PATH train from Manhattan and get off at the first station in New Jersey (Hoboken, Newport or Exchange Place, depending on which train you take) and then take an Uber/Lyft the rest of the way to the cruise port. This saves you the surcharge of using Uber/Lyft or a taxi to go from New York to New Jersey.

Expect the public transit trip to cost about $5.

Honestly, given the transfers and the fact that the closest rail station to the port is still about two miles away from the ship, we think many people would just be better offer with a taxi or Uber/Lyft.

Bottom line: If you are in New Jersey, then Uber/Lyft will likely be your easiest and cheapest way to get to the port. If coming from New York State, then we’d suggest taking public transit (PATH) over to New Jersey, and then an Uber/Lyft the rest of the way to the port to save money.

An insanely long line to park in an open lot among old shipping buildings with minimal security. Forced in the overflow lot no cameras and a 4 ft fence in the last row. Our car and the line of cars next to us were broken into. $150 for five days. No other choice once you’re in the line to park. I guess could’ve found a hotel to park at.

Non parking lot available, EWR parking lot is cheaper but you will pay $40 in Uber one way. Its pain take cruise from Cape Liberty. Thanks America.

My brother is going on a cruise out of New Jersey, Cape liberty port to Bermuda. Does anyone know which airport is the nearest/most convenient? Is this far from New York? Would it be preferable to fly to NY instead of NJ and, if so, what type of transportation would you recommend?

Newark Liberty Airport is the closest by far of the 3 NYC area airports. JFK and LaG are in Queens many miles away.

Bayonne is across the Hudson River from Manhattan, near the Statue of Liberty.

Newark. Also not a bad place to drive--we are from Ohio and drove with some friends. Spent the night in a Summerfield Suite about 45 minutes from the port. Got a nice rooms for about $100.

It is about a 25$ taxi ride to the port from newark airport

TPKeller

I've marked all three major airports in the NY area on my Bayonne map:

http://cruisetip.tpkeller.com/maps/portmaps.php?mapid=nybay

Take the advice from people who are in the area, but this will give you a picture.

If you click on the Bayonne dock marker, and then click on the "From here" direction link, you can enter the three letter airport code to get a map and directions to the airports. To Newark (EWR) it is only 9.1 miles.

You definitely want to use Newark. Even if the others looked closer, the traffic from the NYC would kill you. The Newark airport is at exit 14 of the NJ Turnpike, Bayonne is at exit 14C on the Newark Bay Extension of the NJTP(also known as the eastern spur). I don't know the mileage, but it can't be much more than 10 miles. BTW I'm from Central Jersey, but I work in North Jersey & travel that area a lot.

Your brother should come into Newark Airport. If he comes in the day before there is the Newark Best Western that offers a Park and cruise package and they provide shuttle to Cape Liberty and also to Newark Airport. The number is 877-442-0992. Rate is 155.00 plus tax for 2 people and includes breakfast. A few people used it from my Oct. cruise and they seemed pleased. :)

I live in NJ and NEWARK airport is your best bet. The traffic through NY is so unpredictable and nerve wracking...no way to start a vacation! Also, the view of NY on the NJ side (if you should go for a taxi $$ tour to Liberty Park, JC) is very nice too.

I'm planning a cruise from Cape Liberty, New Jersey and I understand that the Newark Liberty Airport is the one to fly into. If one stays in Cape Liberty, New Jersey is there inexpensive transit options to get into New York City? Is there things to do in Cape Liberty, New Jersey? Do any hotels offer transportation from the airport and to the cruise terminal?

For those living in NJ, we will be flying into Newark next October 16, before flying up to Quebec for a cruise on the 19th and staying at the Hampton Suites in Elizabeth. I was told to take the Path into the WTC. We wish to spend some time in NYC and see the 9/11 Museum & Memorial along with the Statue of Liberty for starters. Once we arrive at the WTC, what is the best way to get to the 9/11 Museum & Memorial.

As Bob wrote, you should use the East Coast Departures forum, whose link he provided.

The 9/11 museum is at the WTC site. Follow the signs when you get there. (I also.live in NJ).

I would DEFINITELY plan on flying in at least a day ahead. All of the NYC airports are infamous for delays in and out - and that's definitely no way to begin a vacation.

We just returned from a cruise on Liberty out of Port Liberty. When we cruise out of Port Liberty we stay at Embassy Suites Newark Airport which has a complimentary shuttle to the hotel from the airport. We took a taxi from the hotel to the airport and it was $65. Country Inn and Suites, which is right across the parking lot from Embassy, offers a shuttle to the cruise port for $35pp.

From the ship to the airport RCI transfers are $28.50pp, Airport Shuttle Bus (independent of RCI) is also $28.50pp. We chose to splurge and use a taxi which was $68.30 (includes toll fee). We were off the ship at 9:30 and sitting in the UA lounge at 10:30.

I don't think the word "inexpensive" even exists in New Jersey or New York.:D

Opened in May of 2004, the cruise port is located on The Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor, formerly the Bayonne Navy Base/MOTBY facility. If the cruise line offers airport transportation, this might be the way to go.

While the local public transportation system will take you to a point directly outside the Cape Liberty Cruise Terminal, the relevant authorities prohibit people from entering the port area unless they are traveling in a motor vehicle. No pedestrians are permitted. Thus, you would need to go by taxi for that short distance remaining between the station and the port. Fortunately, the taxi fare is not that high, less than $10.

Royal Caribbean International just spent $70 million to build a new cruise terminal at Cape Liberty in Bayonne,

The official U.S. currency is the United States dollar (symbol: $). ATM's everywhere.

Major credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard are widely used and accepted, even for transactions worth only a few dollars. In fact, in some cases, it may be the only way to make a transaction. Note to overseas visitors: Prices of goods and services always seem lower than they really are, as taxes and gratuities are seldom included.

Most states have a sales tax, ranging from 2.9% to nearly 10% of the retail price; 4-6% is typical. Sales tax is almost never included in posted prices (except for gasoline, and in most states, alcoholic beverages consumed on-premises), but instead will be calculated and added to the total when you pay.

Tipping in America is widely used and expected. While Americans themselves often debate correct levels and exactly who deserves to be tipped, generally accepted standard rates are:

  • Full-service restaurants: 15-20% (Often this is the only income of the wait(ress). Tips are either left in cash or you can add it to the credit card slip) Note: Few restaurants add an automatic service charge, in which case it is up to you how much you tip extra. Check your bill!
  • Taxi drivers, hairdressers, other personal services: 10-15%
  • Bartenders: $1 per drink if inexpensive or 15% of total
  • Bellhops: $1-2 per bag ($3-5 minimum regardless)
  • Hotel doorman: $1 per bag (if they assist), $1 for calling a cab
  • Tour guides: Depending on tour length, size, and overall quality of guided tours; for half day tours or less $5-10 per person, for longer tours $10-20 per person.
  • Private car & limousine drivers: 15-20%
  • Housekeeping in hotels: $1-2 per day for long stays or $5 minimum for very short stays (optional)
  • Food delivery (pizza, etc.): $2-5, possibly more for very large orders

Communication:

The U.S. has no official language at the federal level, but English is by far the standard for everyday use. Several states have declared their official state language as English. Spanish is also official in the state of New Mexico, where it is widely spoken; French is official in Louisiana and the Hawaiian language is official in Hawaii, but neither approaches the use of English and are official for primarily historical reasons.

Opening Hours and Holidays:

In major metropolitan areas like New York and Los Angeles, many drugstores and supermarkets are routinely open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, while department stores, shopping centers and most other large retailers are typically open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and often with shorter hours on Sundays - generally 11 a.m. or noon to 5 or 6 p.m. On holidays, the tendency is to remain open (with the exception of the most important holidays like Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day where stores are generally closed)

How to Get to Cape Liberty Cruise Port from Amtrak Station in Newark

I’m here to help with your Amtrak questions. Or so I thought. After someone read my How to Take Amtrak To Your Cruise Port article, she emailed me for directions from an Amtrak station either in New York or New Jersey to Cape Liberty Cruise Port in Bayonne, New Jersey.

I was at a loss. But I did the Amtrak research and found out quite a bit. As a result, twice I’ve taken Amtrak to Newark, New Jersey. It’s easy and I’ll explain how to get to Cape Liberty Cruise Port by Amtrak.

Cape Liberty Cruise Port

I’ve made the run from the Amtrak Newark Penn station in Jersey to Bayonne. Both times I went from Newark Penn station by taxi to Bayonne.

I had no idea where I was going and the taxi fare cost over $50. This was pre-Uber and pre-Lyft. Now both companies service Cape Liberty and for a lot less money.

How to Go to Cape Liberty Cruise Port from Newark Amtrak Station

Since Cape Liberty is mainly used by Royal Caribbean and Celebrity plus a sprinkling of Azamara, TUI Cruises and Viking Ocean, there’s not a lot of how-to information available. Especially if you travel by Amtrak.

I had to dig through four seemingly buried links on Royal Caribbean’s website until I finally found some info but it didn’t include Amtrak. No wonder this woman emailed me! I’d have given up, too.

What to Do in Dubrovnik On Your Own Shore Excursion

What to Do in Dubrovnik On Your Own Shore Excursion

Hi LaBrina, Thank you for reading my article and taking the time to ask your question. I know of others who are petrified to drive over bridges. I don’t understand it but it is a real phobia. It’s always a safe bet to arrive for a cruise one day early. Less stress, time to relax and then you can even get to the ship in time for lunch! Bayonne cruise port is kind of a pain, but arriving the day before is a good idea. Whether by train or plane, delays seem to rule the day lately. Have a wonderful cruise and train ride! Thanks again for your question.

Thank you for this information. I am traveling from Baltimore with my 14yo son and 4yo grandson. Sad to say, but I am terrified of large bridges (I know, irrational) so the drive for me is difficult. I was trying to determine other ways to get there without having to have someone drive us there and pick us up. The train may be my best choice.

Now I am trying to determine if we should go in a day early to avoid any possible delays.

Thanks again!

Hi Todd, Thanks for your question. Personally, if I was going to Cape Liberty Cruise Port in Bayonne, I would use the Newark station. I seem to remember one time that I left the train at the airport and it wasn’t fun – too much walking with my luggage and escalators to ground level to find a taxi at the airport. I hope this is helpful and that you enjoy your train ride and cruise.

Hi Was wondering about options from Newark Airport to the Bayonne port. Amtrak offers stop both to The train station and the airport. Is it wise to go all the way to the airport via Amtrak. ?

Hi Kelley, You’re right…it’s a trade-off; Amtrak rail fare or a hotel night. Be super careful to give yourself extra time in case the train is delayed. Like flying or driving to your port of embarkation, a delay (especially without travel insurance) can be really stressful or worse.

Regarding Lyft or Uber…it’s easiest to just put your question about Uber or Lyft categories into Google. Most likely, the first choices will be directly with the supplier. You definitely don’t want a shared car. That could add precious minutes to your ride.

Have a wonderful and safe journey to Bayonne. It’s a complicated port to reach, for sure. Sherry

I just circled back to this post because last time I went to Bayonne, I stayed at a hotel and used their shuttle the next day. It wasn’t bad. But this time around, I think I will take Amtrak from Boston to Newark Penn, and then taxi over. I saw that if you can book super early on Amtrak, you can get a decent deal. It will still add another $125-$150 or so to the trip but eliminates the need to stay over.

I am not a Lyft and Uber user. On the rates you posted, where can I find what the different categories mean, like Uber 2-4, Uber shared, etc.

Hi Kelley, I’m glad my instructions were helpful. I totally agree…getting to Bayonne for a cruise can be a deal-breaker for me. Amtrak to Newark is the best option. Thank you for your comment. Happy cruising! Sherry

Hi, this was very helpful. For me, the problem stems from the fact that the cruise lines no longer offer bus transport out of the New England area, so we are at a loss for getting to Bayonne. NYC is easier for me for Norwegian but I finally resolved just to go down via Amtrak to Penn Newark,, stay overnight at a hotel, and use the the hotel shuttle to the terminal.

I don’t care for this option. It cost me a lot more than the $100 the cruise companies used to charge to take the bus round trip. I can fly pretty easily from Boston but that’s expensive.

Bayonne is just not easy unless people live in that area. But thank you so much for all of your work on this.

The obvious answer for best things to do near Cape Liberty is visit New York City. There are several options to get there depending on where you are staying. The Big Apple can be reached by the PATH subway system, the bus system, or the Staten Island Ferry. NYC has so much to offer that you certainly won’t be able to fit it all in one day. If you want a quick overview of the major attractions and some great photo opportunities, we suggest a sightseeing tour on one of the many hop on hop off bus tours. We took one of these tours last year during one of our trips to the city. With the flexibility of hopping on and off at multiple locations and different route options, you can choose to simply stay on the bus or customize the experience as much as you like. If you will be arriving later in the day, NYC also offers an extensive night life with plenty of bars, restaurants, and experiences. We suggest trying to take in a Broadway show.

If you have the time, definitely take the trip over to see the Statue of Liberty. This universal symbol of freedom was given to the United States in 1886 by France. Statue Cruises are available to both Liberty Island and Ellis Island, home of the Immigration Museum. Do some outlet shopping.

If you are looking for something a bit more low-key or perhaps a way to spend a cold or rainy pre-cruise day, then you might opt to do some shopping at the Jersey Gardens . Located in Elizabeth, NJ, directly across the street from the Embassy Suites and a group of other hotels, Jersey Gardens is one of the largest outlet retailers offering over 200 stores under one roof. Great if you are looking for that last minute outfit, cruise accessory, or perhaps forgot to pack something. This mall is a shopper’s paradise offering stores such as Saks, Michael Kors, the largest Tommy Hilfiger in the US, and more. The Jersey Gardens also has an IMAX theater and a Johnny Rockets, just in case you can’t wait to board the ship!  We spent hours browsing this shopping mecca prior to our Quantum of the Seas cruise in January 2015, so that is why it also makes our list of the best things to do near Cape Liberty .
