First things first: there's not really any such thing as a bad time to visit the Maldives . Whether your holiday to the Indian Ocean’s pièce de résistance is a romantic escape, a getaway with friends or a solo adventure, you're in for an incredible experience.
That said, it’s worth spending a moment researching the advantages of visiting during specific times, maybe to optimize amazing wildlife sightings or find the best snorkeling conditions. Our seasonal guide to the Maldives will ensure you don't pick the wrong month for a relaxing honeymoon or miss out on the underwater experience of your dreams.
All that’s left for you to decide is which island is right for you . Just a word of warning – with 1192 to choose from, this is easier said than done…
January to March is the best time for fantastic weather
If warm weather and sun-drenched beaches are a priority, you can’t go wrong with a visit to the Maldives in January, February or March. These months fall outside the monsoon period and are typically when the islands get the most hours of sun. Full disclosure – monsoon season tails off in late November but this is when prices start to creep up due to the demand for winter sun holidays, while rates also get higher closer to Christmas.
Another reason this is an excellent time to visit is because this is when the water is at its clearest and calmest – the snorkeling and diving are fantastic. Atolls such as the Raa Atoll, famous for its diverse marine life and spectacular coral formations, are great destinations to check out at this time of year. But if you’re a beach bum who prefers to stay close to their sun lounger, you’re also in luck – on average you can expect around nine hours of sunshine during these months, while humidity levels remain low and average temperatures hover around 29°C (84°F).
April to August is a great time to bag a bargain
Late April is when the first showers of the year start to appear but April to August is still a wonderful time to book a holiday to the Maldives, simply because it’s one of the cheapest times to visit. Even with the higher chance of rainfall, you’ll still enjoy between seven and eight hours of sunshine every day.
It’s worth bearing in mind that if you’re a keen snorkeler or scuba diver, water visibility is often reduced during these months (although the average sea temperature at this time – a bath-warm 30°C (86°F) – means it’s still a fantastic time for a dip in the ocean). This is an excellent season for travelers with a limited budget – airfares and resort rates are significantly lower and resorts are less crowded. Finding a spot at the bar from which to soak up those gorgeous sunset views won’t be a problem and complimentary room upgrades are more likely.
Don’t forget that the Maldives isn’t just about the great outdoors, either: resorts offer a staggering range of activities (most of which don’t depend on the weather) and there are often more on offer between April and August, ranging from cookery masterclasses to art workshops. Fancy embracing paint power? Cora Cora Maldives , on the Raa Atoll, is a great option and runs a series of art classes with a local artist who daubed his beautiful designs onto the resort’s villas.
June and July are when to hang ten in the Maldives
June and July are ideal months to try surfing in the Maldives because this is when the waves are at their highest. A growing number of resorts now have surf schools, although one of our favorite spots is Laamu Atoll. This is where you’ll find the Six Senses Laamu , which was one of the first resorts in the Maldives with a surf school. Generally, the northern and central atolls are the best destinations for surfing in the Maldives.
July is the perfect time to join in with Independence Day celebrations
The Maldives’ Independence Day is on July 26 and parades, parties and cultural performances transform this island nation as everyone celebrates together, with some of the most colorful celebrations held at the country’s resorts. Typically, there’s a wider range of cultural activities for guests to enjoy around this time, whether it’s masterclasses led by traditional lacquer artists or lessons in leaf-folding, which involves creating elaborate sculptures from palm leaves. Trust us – your average piece of Japanese origami will look rather plain after this.
Independence Day is also a great time to sample local cuisine, as many resorts will roll out special celebratory menus. Highlights will often include delicious cakes adorned with the colors of the Maldivian flag (the cutting of this cake is usually one of the most important events) and there will be endless opportunities to sample traditional dishes such as saagu bondai bai , a delicious sago dessert made with coconut milk, rose water and cardamom.
October and November are brilliant months for wildlife spotting
Yes, there’s a higher risk of rainfall and thunderstorms during these months, but they’re generally short, sharp downpours. You can expect between six and eight hours of sun a day, while the mercury will hover around 27°C (80°F). The major advantage to visiting at this time of year is the wildlife-spotting opportunities. Whale sharks and manta rays are regularly sighted as they feast on plankton. For some of the best sightings head to the Raa Atoll – this is a prime manta-spotting territory, and the northern tip’s proximity to the Baa Atoll (a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve) ramps up the wow factor.
If seeing the region’s marine life is a priority, stay at a resort that operates conservation programs or other schemes designed with wildlife in mind. The InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort , for example, is regarded as one of the best places to see manta rays. But don’t just take our word for it – this is where UK-based charity The Manta Trust chose to set up its first base in the Maldives, and visitors can sign up for a wide range of manta-themed activities, including manta-spotting snorkeling excursions and presentations about the charity’s work.
December means plenty of opportunities for festive fun
Yes, December is one of the more expensive times to visit the Maldives, but we’re firm believers this period should never be ruled out. It’s a fantastic time to spot marine life and the region’s resorts go all out when it comes to festive fun. At the Hard Rock Maldives and the St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort , for example, Santa typically makes regular visits on his jet-ski, and almost every resort will drape its palm trees with fairy lights.
One way to offset the higher prices is by opting for a resort that can be reached by speedboat (the cost of which is normally included in the room rate), rather than a more expensive seaplane journey. Weather-wise, expect around seven hours of sunshine a day and daytime temperatures of around 29°C (84°F). Sea temperatures are slightly cooler, but still hover around a perfectly pleasant 20°C (68°F) – the ideal temperature for a post-Christmas-dinner dip in the ocean, we reckon.

Weather in the Maldives
Best time to visit for scuba diving, best time to visit to save on flights and accommodations.
- Month-by-Month Breakdown
- Frequently Asked Questions
The Maldives is one of the world's most picture-perfect luxury travel destinations. To experience the idyllic tropical scenes you've no doubt admired, the best time to visit the Maldives is in the "dry season" from December to April. Not surprisingly, this is also peak season when rates skyrocket. Therefore, if budget is an issue, traveling at a different time may be preferable. You should plan your visit according to the various things to do in the Maldives . Most people are willing to pay the higher prices for good weather, as outdoor activities are limited when it rains. However, one of the benefits of visiting the Maldives during the wet season are the dramatic sunsets after the rain clears.
The weather in the Maldives is split into two distinct seasons by two monsoons, in which the wind changes to the opposite direction.
- The dry northeast monsoon from January to March. This is labeled the "dry season" but it doesn't mean it won't rain. The reality is that the weather is more stable and there's less chance of it raining. Short afternoon and evening showers are frequent in the southern atolls. If you really want to avoid the rain, your best bet is February and March in the northern atolls. December and April are considered transitional months between the monsoons.
- The windy, wet southwest monsoon from mid-May to November. This monsoon is characterized by intense stormy periods that can be brief or last for a few days followed by perfect sunny spells. The weather is unpredictable and the conditions can alter at any minute, although it tends to rain more at night during the wet season. The transitional months from October to early December can be particularly unsettled, with quite a few bursts of rain, before the season transforms completely.
However, it's important to keep in mind that the islands in the Maldives are situated over a considerable distance of more than 800 kilometers (almost 500 miles) from north to south. This means that the weather will vary across the country, and even from island to island in the same area. The southern atolls receive more annual rain than the northern atolls. Yet, rain tends to be less frequent in the southern atolls during the wet season, as they're less exposed to the southwest monsoon. As a result, they're sunnier and not as windy.
What doesn't vary much is the temperature in the Maldives, due to the country's location right on the equator. It stays warm throughout the year, with average temperatures rarely dropping below 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) at night or rising above 88 degrees Fahrenheit (31 degrees Celsius) in the day.
The level of humidity also remains constant, and high, at about 80 percent. The water is warm too, with an average temperature of about 82 degrees F (28 degrees C).

There are some extra things to consider if you're planning on scuba diving in the Maldives , which has some of the most remarkable dive sites in the world. In particular, visibility and marine life change according to the season.
Visibility is generally superior in the dry season , and is especially good along the northeastern atolls during that time. February is the pick of the months for diving there. However, the wet season is a better time to see sharks and manta rays, especially on the southwestern side of the Maldives (around South Ari Atoll) from May to October. The manta rays are attracted by the plentiful availability of plankton to feed on.
If you're lucky, you might get to see a whale shark. The Maldives is one of the few places on earth where this is possible. These massive sharks are mostly found on the western side of the Maldives from May to December, and on the eastern side up until April. The protected area off the coast of Maamigili Island in South Ari Atoll has whale shark sightings year-round.
Unfortunately, getting to the Maldives from the U.S. is quite an ordeal as there are no direct flights. Be prepared for travel to take a considerable amount of time (up to 30 hours) and money (from about $1,200 if you fly out of a major international hub such as New York, Boston, or Los Angeles). If you have limited funds, you may want to think about going to the Maldives for a couple of weeks during the cheaper, wet season rather than going for just a week during peak season.
Prices for accommodations in the Maldives generally drop substantially at the start of May, on the fringe of the low season. It's often the case that the weather is still decent then, as the wet season doesn't set in until the second half of May. Plus, if you have your heart set on a certain resort in the Maldives, the low season will make it more affordable.
May and June tend to be the cheapest months, with deals for over-water bungalows at top-rated resorts running up to 50 percent off high season prices. Do compare prices (including flight prices) though, as they rise during summer break.
The most popular islands in the Maldives book up well in advance during the high season. While flash sales and last-minute offers come up throughout the year, these are more common for the commercial mass-market resorts. Of course, this isn't an issue if you're flexible in regards to your accommodations and travel dates. If you can drop everything and book within six weeks of travel, you may be able to score yourself a super deal as resorts (even the top-end ones) constantly adjust their prices to maximize occupancy levels. So, make a note of a handful of resorts you're interested in (here are some really beautiful hotels or take a look at the Maldives Tourism website for inspiration) and monitor them.
The fact that accommodations are spread over many islands in the Maldives means that it never feels too crowded there, even during peak season.
January is a very popular time to visit the Maldives, as people want to escape the winter at home. Prices are especially high over the New Year period. Make sure you book well in advance. The weather stabilizes in January, resulting in mostly calm and clear sunny days. While you can expect about three rainy days during the month in the north, this increases up to 10 days in the south.
Events to check out:
- Huravee Day is a tribute to Sultan Hussain Izzuddin, who freed the Maldives from brief South Indian occupation in 1752. It features traditional music, food, and dance. The date is based on the Islamic calendar and varies each year, but it's always celebrated on the third day of the sixth month which generally falls in late December or early January.
February is regarded as the driest and least humid month to visit the Maldives. Statistically, the north only experiences a couple of rainy days during the month. The number of rainy days in the south also drops to about five, and these are usually short showers in the southeast part. Prices are high, reflecting the fact that it's peak tourist season.
- Valentines Day: Many resorts offer special (and costly!) romantic packages for Valentine's Day.
The number of rainy days remains pretty constant in the north but starts to rise to an average of eight in the south. Again, the rain is usually restricted to short bursts that bring relief from the heat, rather than lengthy downpours. The surfing season gets underway in the Maldives in March. Some resorts offer special deals, as peak season winds down later in the month.
The temperature and humidity are slightly higher in April, as the transition from the dry northeast monsoon to the wet southwest monsoon commences. This produces a lot more rain, consisting of afternoon showers that increase in frequency from mid-month. The number of rainy days per month averages about six in the north and 12 in the south. Keep an eye out for additional special deals, as long as you avoid traveling around Easter.
- Ramadan: The Maldives is an Islamic country and the holy month of Ramadan begins early April in 2022 (the exact date varies each year according to the Islamic calendar). Resort islands aren't affected but restaurants will be closed on local islands, as Muslims fast all day.
Resorts drop their prices in early May. The southwest monsoon usually arrives in the Maldives during the second half of the month. It reaches the southern part of the country first and proceeds north. The second half of May can be particularly wet, with high possibility of storms and whole days of rain. Diving visibility is reduced. Ramadan concludes on Eid in early May 2022, with families gathering to feast.
The southwest monsoon covers the whole country by early June. Expect quite a lot of clouds, morning and evening drizzle, and some torrential downpours. Resorts continue to offer discounted rates to entice guests. If you're planning to visit the Maldives in June, the southern atolls are preferable. The number of rainy days per month jumps to as many as 18 in the north, compared to only 10 or so in the south. Sharks and manta rays are a draw for scuba divers in the south.
The rain continues similar to June but eases off slightly in the north during July, bringing the number of rainy days down to about 15 or 16. The south experiences a couple of extra rainy days throughout the month though, averaging around 12. Rates can be higher in July, as families go on summer vacation. This month is great for surfing, as the storms produce reliable big swells.
- Independence Day (July 26) marks the day the Maldives gained independence from the British in 1965, after 77 years of protection. Cultural events take place across the country.
August is another popular off-season month for summer vacation in the Maldives, which may result in fewer discounted deals. The number of rainy days continues to reduce slightly in the north, especially towards the end of August. However, it remains constant at about 12 in the south. Downpours are short and heavy.
The weather in the Maldives is quite unpredictable in September. It can rain heavily, or alternatively you may get only an hour of rain some days. There are less tourists, and this is reflected in discounted rates for accommodations. The number of rainy days is about the same in the north and south, averaging around 13 during the month.
- National Day celebrates the end of 15 years of Portuguese occupation in the Maldives, in 1573. The date is set according to the Islamic calendar and varies each year. In 2022, it falls on Sept. 27. There are patriotic parades and marches throughout the Maldives, especially in the capital city Male.
The wet southwest monsoon begins to withdraw in October, producing unsettled weather. The number of rainy days jumps to an average of 15 in the south, exceeding that in the north. The surfing season draws to a close in October. It's also the final month for good sharks and manta ray sightings in the south. Expect rates at top resorts to rise towards the end of October.
The swap in wind direction, associated with the transition from southwest monsoon to northeast monsoon in November, reduces the number of rainy days in the north to about eight. It remains high, at about 15, in the south though. There are heavy downpours that tend to pass quickly in the afternoons. This is the last month to find a cheap deal (if you're lucky) before peak season really kicks in.
Events to check out :
- Victory Day (Nov. 3) commemorates the defeat of an attempted coup by a terrorist group from Sri Lanka in 1988. A military march, drills, traditional dances, and processions are held in Male.
- Republic Day (Nov. 11) marks the day Sultanate rule was replaced with a republic government in 1968. Marching bands and vibrant parades are highlights in Male.
December is the start of the "dry," peak season in the Maldives. You'll still get some rain at the beginning of the month (and it can be heavy at times) before the weather transforms completely. However, it lessens in the north as the month goes on. Many tourists visit the Maldives for the Christmas-New Year period. The resorts hold special buffets and gala dinners for these occasions. In addition to super high prices, it's common for resorts to have minimum stay length requirements.
- Fishermen’s Day (Dec. 10) honors the country's fishermen, who contribute greatly to the economy. Educational and fun events about traditional fishing are organized. You'll be able to devour delicious seafood too!
If you want good weather, visit during the dry season from December to April. However, prices are at their highest during these months.
The Maldives are expensive year-round, but September is the best time to find deals on flights and hotels. However, it's also the peak of the rainy season and the weather can be unpredictable.
The monsoon season begins mid-May and lasts until November. During these months, rainstorms are frequent and can last a couple of minutes or a couple of days, but the weather during these months is sporadic.

The Maldives is a destination that has a starring role in many vacationers’ dreams. White sand, crystal clear water, and a remote location make it an exotic playground that many of us have at the top of our bucket lists.
When planning a trip to the Maldives, there are a lot of things to take into consideration, including what resort you’ll stay at, how you’ll get there, how much money you plan on spending, and of course, what time of year you want to visit.
While the Maldives is a year-round destination, there are 2 distinct seasons that offer different benefits and drawbacks. In this guide, we’ll explore the best times to visit the Maldives, both by season and by interest. So, if you’re wondering about the best time to visit the Maldives for snorkeling or the best time to visit the Maldives to save money, we’ve got you covered.
Let’s get to it and start exploring the best (and worst) times to visit the Maldives.
The Maldives is an archipelago made up of over 1,000 islands located in the Indian Ocean southwest of Sri Lanka and India. Since it’s situated just north of the equator, the temperature stays relatively constant throughout the year with high temperatures in the mid-80s and low temperatures in the mid- to high 70s.
Of all the islands in the Maldives, only about 200 are inhabited. These islands are separated into 26 atolls — ring-shaped islands or chains of islands — spread out over 500 miles north to south and 80 miles east to west.
The Maldives is the lowest lying country in the world , with not a single island sitting higher than 6 feet above sea level. The capital, Malé, is only 3.2 square miles and is home to over 250,000 people, making it one of the most densely populated cities in the world.

The Best Times To Visit The Maldives by Season
The Maldives is a bit unique because it doesn’t experience 4 seasons like many places around the world. Instead, it has 2 — a dry season and a wet season.
Let’s take a look at the difference between these 2 seasons, as well as the weather in the Maldives each month. Keep in mind that the islands and atolls are spread out over about 500 miles north to south, so the weather can vary throughout the country.
The wet ( southwest monsoon) season in the Maldives is from May to October . Each island can see up to 9.5 inches of rain in a single month, making it a less popular time to visit for many tourists. However, just because it’s the wet season doesn’t mean there aren’t any sunny days. The weather during this time period is unpredictable and can include a combination of massive rainstorms with multiple sunny days.
The southern atolls see more yearly rainfall overall than the northern atolls, but storms are less frequent there and it’s less windy and sunnier overall.
The dry (northeast monsoon) season in the Maldives is from November to April . This is generally thought of as the best time to visit. While this is considered the dry season, it can still rain during this time period. November and December can actually see quite a bit of rain, mostly in the form of brief afternoon or evening thunderstorms, so keep that in mind when planning your trip to the Maldives. For the best chance of dry weather, plan your vacation for February or March.
The Maldives in January
January is a peak time to visit the Maldives. Temperatures range between 77 and 84 degrees. The days are mostly sunny with an average rainfall of about 2.95 inches. Prices can be high, especially at the beginning of the month around New Year’s Day.
The Maldives in February
February is one of the best months to visit the Maldives. With less than 2 inches of rain, it’s also the driest month of the year . The temperature ranges from 79 to 84 degrees and the warm waters are crystal clear. February is prime time for romantic getaways, so expect high prices, especially around Valentine’s Day.
The Maldives in March
March is also a popular month to visit the Maldives. Temperatures range from 81 to 86 degrees and rainfall is at a minimum. It’s a great time for snorkeling and scuba diving since the waters are still calm and clear during this time. Prices can still be pretty high during March, especially when Easter falls during the month.
Hot Tip: The Maldives lies just north of the equator, so the sun can be intense. If you plan to spend lots of time outside, be sure to protect your skin with a rash guard and lots of sunscreen.
The Maldives in April
April is a transition month in the Maldives. This time between the dry and wet seasons can see unpredictable weather, including frequent afternoon storms, although there are still plenty of sunny days to be had. Water temperatures are at the highest of the year, averaging 86 degrees, so it’s a great time for activities like scuba diving and snorkeling. Air temperatures are also at the highest of the year , ranging from 81 to 88 degrees.
The Maldives in May
May marks the beginning of the wet season in the Maldives. This means there will be fewer crowds and lower prices, but also a higher chance of a lot of rain. Water visibility reduces and sea conditions can become a bit rougher. While that’s not great for scuba diving and snorkeling, it’s perfect for surfing. The temperatures in May drop from their April peak but are still warm with averages between 79 and 86 degrees. May can be quite a wet month, averaging over 8 inches of rain.
The Maldives in June
June can be very rainy in the Maldives which often receives almost 7 inches of rain, leading resorts to offer lower prices . This is great if you’re trying to save money, but set your expectations to include the possibility of some massive storms. While it can be wet anywhere in the country in June, the southern islands and atolls tend to be a little drier than the northern ones. Temperatures range from 79 to 84 degrees.
The Maldives in July
While July is a rainy month in the Maldives, prices can increase slightly due to summer vacations. Temperatures remain steady between 79 and 84 degrees. July is a great time for surfing in the Maldives .
The Maldives in August
While still part of the wet season, August is a popular time to visit the Maldives due to school vacations. Temperatures are similar to June and July, ranging from 79 to 84 degrees. Rainfall can be a little less in the north than in the south, with the country seeing about 7.5 inches of rain in August.
The Maldives in September
September is the wettest month in the Maldives and the peak of the low season. Rainfall averages about 9.5 inches and downpours can be heavy. While this can be a good time to visit for surfers or those looking for low rates, it’s not ideal if you want to soak up the sun or float in calm waters outside of your overwater bungalow. Temperatures are still warm though, ranging from 77 to 84 degrees.
The Maldives in October
October is another transition month in the Maldives, with the wet season coming to an end and the dry season emerging toward the end of the month. Rainfall averages between 8.5 inches and 9 inches in October. There’s still great surfing during this month and temperatures remain steady between 77 and 84 degrees. Prices should still be relatively low since the weather can be unpredictable .
The Maldives in November
November is the coolest month in the Maldives , although it’s far from cold with temperatures ranging from 75 to 84 degrees. It’s the end of the surf season and the beginning of the peak season in the Maldives. Average rainfall drops below 8 inches but heavy downpours can still be common. Resort prices start to creep back up this month.
The Maldives in December
December is the beginning of peak travel times in the Maldives, although it’s actually one of the wettest months! December can see over 9 inches of rain, but it tends to happen at the beginning of the month. Temperatures remain balmy, fluctuating between 77 and 84 degrees. The Christmas and New Year holidays at the end of the month are popular times to visit the Maldives and therefore prices can be sky high. Some resorts may even have minimum stay requirements if you’re visiting during the holidays.
Bottom Line: The temperature is fairly consistent year-round in the Maldives, so you’ll want to pay attention to the wet and dry seasons when choosing when to plan your trip. The most popular time to visit the Maldives is during the dry season from November to April. If you’re trying to save some money, aim to visit during the wet season from May to October, but be prepared for some potentially wet days.
The Best Times To Visit The Maldives by Interests
The Maldives is a great location for scuba diving and snorkeling. While these are year-round activities, the water tends to be calmer, making the visibility better, from January through April . However, some wildlife, like manta rays and whale sharks, make more frequent appearances during the wet season.
Water temperatures are nice and warm throughout the year, ranging from about 80 to 86 degrees. The warmest water temperatures in the Maldives occur between March and June.
Hot Tip: Even in warm water like you’ll find in the Maldives, it’s always a good idea to wear a wetsuit if you plan to scuba dive. Make sure to check out our guide to the best snorkels, masks, fins, and snorkel sets if you prefer to travel with your own gear.
Did you know that bioluminescent plankton can make the nighttime sea glow in the Maldives? This phenomenon occurs when these microorganisms emit a blue light underwater. This beautiful display is actually thought to be a defense mechanism. Whatever it is, count yourself lucky if you get to witness it.
While it’s hard to predict when bioluminescence will be visible in the Maldives, your best chances of seeing it are between June and November when the skies are darkest and there is the largest amount of plankton in the sea. The hotspot to see bioluminescence in the Maldives is the “Sea of Stars” on Vaadhoo Island in Raa Atoll.
The best time for surfing in the Maldives is from February through November . While many tourists want to avoid the wet season from May to October in the Maldives, it’s actually a popular time to visit among surfers since the waves and swells can be bigger during this time.
If you’re lucky enough to be planning your honeymoon in the Maldives, you’ll want to put some thought into when you’ll be visiting. For the best weather, shoot for a trip between January and April. February and March are the months that tend to be the driest. However, if you are trying to save some money, consider visiting during the wet season from May to October. While you may have some rainy days, resort prices will be cheaper. And relaxing in an overwater bungalow with your new spouse during a tropical rainstorm can be a romantic way to spend the afternoon!

Best Time To Visit Maldives
Best time to visit maldives.
December to March is the best time to visit Maldives, as this period marks the peak tourist season. The Republic of Maldives, a small nation located in the Arabian Sea of the Indian Ocean, is amongst the most picturesque and scenic nations in Asia. It is an increasingly preferred destination for families and honeymooners. The Maldives is hot and sunny all year round, with average temperatures of 23ºC-31ºC. Depending on your preferred activity, the best time to visit Maldives could really be any time of the year as there are no winters per say in Maldives.
Most Popular Maldives Tour Packages
Maldives in dry season (december to april).
Temperature – ~31 degrees celsius by day and ~ 24 degrees Celsius by night
Weather – This is the best season to visit Maldives. It is perfect for sightseeing, enjoying cultural activities, water sports and savouring the local cuisine. During these months, the weather is dry, devoid of humidity, pleasant with moderate temperature. The best month to swim in the sea is in April when the average sea temperature is 30 degree Celsius.
Significance – One gets to see and experience the best that Maldives has to offer during this season. All locations are well populated and the environment tends to be celebratory and busy.
Why you should visit now: Clearly the weather and the resultant all round beauty make this season the best time to vacation. Minimal precipitation and warm weather make it an ideal setting. The rainfall too is very light and hence not a hindrance.
During the dry season, visibility is also excellent, because of the currents beginning to flow in November from the northeast. This helps you further enjoy the breathtaking view of fabulous lagoons protected by coral reefs and other atolls, and gorgeous beaches.
Things to know before you visit – While the country is crowded during this season, since each resort inhabits its own island and is to an extent detached from the next island, unlike other crowded vacation destinations, you likely will not have to face extremely large crowds. It may hence be prudent to check out some of the islands and see what you prefer.
Baros, Sun Island, Nalaguraidhoo Island in South Ari Atoll, Banana Reef and North Mal-Atoll are some suggested locations. The HP Reef is also a one of the most highly rated tourist attractions. It is a protected marine location bustling with marine life.
One major festival during this period is Mawlid which means the birth of, Prophet Muhamed in November. It is one of the most famous Maldives festivals which is celebrated carnival style over two days. There are huge street processions and mosque decorations.
Tips – Hotel tariffs and costs towards various activities can be extremely high given this is peak season. For more budget-oriented tourists, a preferred time to visit would be in April which is towards the end of the peak season and entering the lean months.
Being a tourist hotspot aside from Indian and Maldivian options, one can enjoy food styles from across the globe. Traditional Maldivian cuisine is based on coconuts, fish, and starches. Some of the common seafood forming part of the local cuisine includes Skipjack tuna, yellowfin tuna, frigate tuna and wahoo. Given the proximity, one does find a strong Indian influence and hence an abundance of curries and other flavours and spices.
Refrain from carrying pork, alcohol, tobacco products and religious books. The law is very strict in this regard.
Lastly, always compare and check prices for water activities before booking. Season time can see a lot of price spikes.
Maldives in Wet Season (May to November)
Temperature – ~31 degrees celsius by day and ~ 25 degrees Celsius by night
Weather – The annual rainfall averages 254 centimetres (100 inches) in the north and 381 centimetres (150 inches) in the south. September tends to be the wettest month.
The intermittent and heavy rains make the destination less attractive for most vacationers. However there are some carefree ones who are more than happy to visit during this time. Venturing into the water however is not often advisable in this season and should be done at one’s own risk.
Significance – This time of year is popular with surfers, because the area sees bigger waves and better swells for surfing during these months. While the waters can be dangerous, the truly adventurous traveller with the right gear can look forward to a whale of a time.
Why you should visit now – The Holy month of Ramadan which tends to be in May is one of the best times to visit Maldives as you get to savour a lot of traditional delicacies. Experience the restaurants which also offer special iftar meals and rose, apricot and kamardine flavoured juices.
Fairly reasonable prices, less crowded resorts and optimal surf and scuba conditions make some of the more adventurous tourists actually prefer this time to travel. In the wet season, the water temperatures are also a couple of degrees lower, which appear to inspire larger numbers of hammerhead sharks and reef sharks to come together, and to do so in shallower waters than in the dry season. Visibility however isn’t as good what is experienced in the dry season as the currents are less.
Things to know before the visit – Eid –ul-Alhaa or Eid al Adha, the festival that commemorates the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son to Allah is celebrated during this period. On this day, islanders gather and fishermen catch a big fish made by weaving palm leaves.
The National Day of Maldives officially known as Qaumee Dhuvas falls sometime in November. This is the day when a local revolt forced the colonial Portuguese to leave the land.
During the wet season, Fihalhohi Island which is rich with shady coconut palm trees, pristine beaches and clear waters is an attractive getaway particularly if you are a honeymooner or looking for a romantic getaway.
Huvahendhoo island with its calm water and lustrous greenery is another location recommended for a relaxed and rejuvenating stay. It is known to be a location ideal for families with both kids and adults having a lot to do and enjoy.
Tips – While Ramadaan offers you a great opportunity to savour the best of foods, during this period many services and shops will be shut during the time of prayer. There is also a need to cover yourself appropriately and avoid public display of affection when visiting the local islands. During Ramadan, the government offices work only from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM and private offices shut by 3.00 PM. Resorts and hotels are however not affected by the holy month.
Located on the equator, Maldives receives plenty of sunshine throughout the year. Temperatures range from 24 degrees at the lowest in December to an average of 31 degrees at the peak in April. For a majority of vacationers the best time to visit is from mid-November to early April when the weather is dry and more welcoming. In other months the country experiences sporadic and sometimes heavy rains when the crystal clear water also disappears making it unattractive for most water activity aside from surfing. For those interested in imbibing the culture and witnessing the major festivals though, the wet season mainly from May to November may be the best time to visit.
The country has got 1,190 islands attracting tourists from every part of the world. It is the smallest in the continent by both land and population spanning around 298 square kilometers that house a little over 450,000 inhabitants. The islands are uniquely laid out into a double chain of 26 coral atolls (200 inhabited islands plus 80 islands with tourist resorts) spread out over roughly 35,000 square miles. Each atoll adds to a variety of vibrant coral reefs teeming with lush underwater life including fish, sea turtles, whales, and dolphins.

These are the best times to visit the Maldives
Editor's Note
Situated more than 600 miles southwest of Asia in the heart of the Indian Ocean, the Republic of Maldives consists of 26 natural atolls surrounding over 1,000 white-sand islands. The islands are framed by turquoise seas and lagoons, making it the perfect place to snorkel, dive and simply escape everyday life.
Because of its location among important maritime trading routes, the Maldives maintains a rich culture influenced by Arabs, North Africans, Sri Lankans and Indians. The blend of customs, religions and cultures forms an unmistakably Maldivian culture, which was shaped when Islam was introduced to the region during the 12th century.

But what the Maldives is best known for is its luxury resorts with overwater bungalows and impossibly clear blue waters. In November, Marriott debuted its five-star JW Marriott Maldives Resort and Spa (with rooms available from 70,000 points per night on off-peak dates). Hilton also expanded its presence in the Maldives when it opened the Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi and SAii Lagoon Maldives, a Curio Collection resort, last summer, available from 120,000 and 85,000 points, respectively, for a standard-room reward.

Whether you intend to spend your time sipping cocktails, scuba diving or simply learning about a new and exciting culture, here's our definitive guide to some of the best times to visit the Maldives.
When to find the best weather in the Maldives
The Maldives is often warm and sunny throughout the year, but its climate is split into a wet season and a dry season. During the dry season, from November through April, temperatures hover in the mid- to upper 80s. Average precipitation is lowest from January through March, but even during the dry season, an afternoon rain is possible.
During the wet season, from May through October, some islands may experience upward of nine inches of precipitation in a single month. Although this sounds like enough to ruin a vacation , most rain comes from fast-moving afternoon storms, allowing visitors to enjoy sunshine and warm temperatures the rest of the day.
In the southern atolls, the wet and dry seasons become slightly less pronounced. Rainfall is fairly consistent (and on the higher side) throughout the year.
When to travel to the Maldives to avoid the crowds
The wet season generally tends to be the slow season. There might be slightly less sunshine this time of year and rates tend to be lower and the crowds thinner .
Even during the wet season, it's not uncommon for there to be multiple sunny days in a row — especially toward the beginning and end of the season (May and October or November) — so don't let the season deter you.
When to visit the Maldives for water sports
Thanks to the Maldives' geographic location, it's a popular destination for water-fueled adventure.
The surf season runs from mid-February through November, which is when the largest swells can be found. If you're looking to canoe or kayak offshore, you may want to avoid visiting during surf season. Waters are calmer during December and January.
A number of remote islands and an abundance of marine life make diving and snorkeling popular in the Maldives. Diving is great year-round, but visibility increases slightly during the dry season — specifically, January through April.

When to visit the Maldives for events
The Maldives, which is largely a Muslim country, has a number of religious holidays and events throughout the year. Many are based on the Islamic lunar calendar, which differs from the Gregorian calendar many of us are familiar with. If there's a specific religious event you'd like to experience in the Maldives, be sure to check the exact date before booking travel.
For Maldivians, Independence Day is one of the most important days of the year. The holiday is usually celebrated on July 26, which is when the country gained its independence from Britain in 1965. During Independence Day, there are festivities, parades and performances across all the islands. The capital city, Malé, is one of the best places to experience the holiday.
Republic Day, which occurs in November, celebrates the establishment of the Republic of Maldives in 1968. Festivities include marching bands, parades, speeches, ceremonies and children walking the streets wearing their best clothes — a true display of the country's culture, heritage and pride.
Huravee Day, which signifies the day Sultan Hassan Izzuddeen freed the country from the occupation of South India in 1752, is celebrated with dancing and traditional meals. The celebration date is based on the Islamic lunar calendar, so it varies annually. In 2020, Huravee Day was celebrated on Jan. 28. In 2021, the holiday will fall on Jan. 16.
Since the Maldives is a Muslim country, Ramadan is an extremely significant holiday. The actual date varies with the Islamic calendar (it takes place on the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar). The holiday is usually celebrated for about a month in the spring. During Ramadan, locals fast during the day, but restaurants and resorts operate as normal. Many restaurants do offer special meals for Iftar — the evening meal breaking each daily fast — which often comprise local foods and juices not typically served the rest of the year.
When to visit the Maldives to see bioluminescence
In oceans and bays around the world, bioluminescent plankton illuminate the water, almost like an aquatic imitation of the aurora borealis. While many animals on both land and sea emit a bioluminescent light (think: fireflies and jellyfish), the plankton often appear at the water's surface, giving it a bluish glow.
One of the most popular places to view the plankton is off of Vaadhoo Island in the Raa Atoll, although it's possible to see the phenomenon in any of the atolls. Your best bet is to visit between June and October, which is when the plankton are typically present.
Bioluminescence can only be seen in turbulent water, such as in the waves on the shoreline or wake from a boat. It can also appear after stirring the water with your foot or hand.
Cheapest time to visit the Maldives
Affordable airfare.
Flights to Malé are generally cheapest in the late fall and winter, although the exact months vary depending on where you are flying from.
According to Skyscanner.com , flights from Miami, New York City and Chicago are cheapest in February. Average airfare from New York is $642, $710 from Chicago and $739 from Miami.
Flights from the West Coast — Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles — are cheapest in November. Los Angeles is the cheapest city to fly out of overall, with the average cost of airfare around $385. From Seattle and San Francisco, expect to pay around $710 and $700, respectively.
Affordable lodging
Lodging prices vary, depending on exactly where you're staying, but it's a safe bet to say the wet season — specifically, May through August — is the cheapest time to stay in the Maldives. According to travel search site Kayak , average hotel prices are at their lowest in May, when you can expect to pay $369 per night. Prices peak at around $705 per night in December. With the exception of November, when prices are in the mid-$500 range, expect to pay in the mid-$600 range the rest of the year.

Bottom line
Like travel to many tropical destinations, deciding when to book a trip to the Maldives requires prioritizing weather, prices and crowds. Your best bet is to book on the early or late end of the wet season to avoid crowds, find reasonable prices and increase the chances of maximum sunshine. Regardless of when you decide to go, an experience in the Maldives is bound to be unforgettable.

When is the best time to go to the Maldives?
By Anna Prendergast
Some destinations are just gorgeous year-round, but when is the best time to go to the Maldives to make the most of the weather in this dream destination? Whether your goal is to relax with perfect sunshine, or you'd ideally like to skip peak season to avoid crowds, planning in advance is important ahead of a trip as big as this.
Chances are, you want to go the the Maldives because you've seen how truly beautiful it is. Dotted like ink blots in the clear, tropical waters of the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is an archipelago made up of more than 1,000 islands, 200 of which are inhabited. Historically a honeymoon destination , the best hotels in the Maldives have shifted the destination up a gear, opening it up further to the realms of solo travel and multi-generational holidays. Between the consistently hot weather, unspoilt sandy beaches , high-design hotels and award-winning restaurants, it’s hard to find fault with this small but mighty contender for winter sunshine.
But there's no denying that it's a bucket list destination for many, so it's understandable that you'd want to plan as much as possible to find the perfect time to go. Here's what you need to know.
There’s no bad time to visit the Maldives, but few places offer such a perfect antidote to the UK ’s long, dark winters. It really does have it all: upwards of eight hours of sun per day, average temperatures of around 28°C, an ocean teeming with wildlife and some of the smartest hotels in the world.
For many, the best time to visit the Maldives is December to April , as that's dry season, with little rain and low humidity leading to bright blue skies, cloudless days and still, balmy evenings. Wet season starts in May and ends in October, with considerably more rain and occasionally strong winds. For scuba divers and snorkellers, visibility is particularly good during the dry season, too, as a result of currents flowing from the northeast (the eastern atolls enjoy the best visibility, with whale sharks and manta rays most commonly spotted between August and November ).
November and April are considered ‘shoulder season’, when room rates and flight prices are lower, travellers can make serious savings and weather still averages 31°C.
What's winter like in the Maldives?
Whether you’ve got your PADI or you just fancy a fun dive, dipping beneath the archipelago’s surface is a magical experience. From the native corals, colourful anemone and otherworldly nudibranch to the docile sea turtles, swooping manta rays and curious (but harmless) whale sharks, the excellent visibility here makes it one of the best places to witness marine life in its natural habitat. Many resorts have in-house marine biologists who enable budding conservationists of every age to learn more about the environment and help make a positive impact on it. Indulgent infinity pools and white sandy sweeps descending into shallow, sparkling waters are primed for a paddle; secluded picnic spots and private terraces make for the finest of dining experiences; overwater villas make even your down-time up-market; wellness centres and bespoke spa experiences help you to fully embrace the go-slow pace.
What are the Maldives like during Christmas and New Year?
During the festive season in the Maldives, Santa doesn’t use a sledge, he flies by seaplane. And despite the Maldives’ quiet, low-key attitude, many of the resorts still know how to throw a party and get guests in the festive mood: Gili Lankanfushi kicks off the season with a Christmas tree lighting ceremony, whilst the The Nautilus hosts Santa hat-making classes for kids and Father Christmas drops off gifts for adults and kids at Joali . From Christmas movies on the beach to New Year’s celebrations under the stars, even those trying to escape all the duties that holiday season can bring can’t help but get into the festive spirit.
Where to stay in the Maldives
Truly, it's hard to find a bad resort in this slice of paradise. Where you choose to stay will depend on your budget, but Kudadoo , the country’s first solar-powered hotel and its first all-inclusive luxury hotel, is a good place to start. Arranged around a circular wooden walkway out at sea, its 15 rooms conjure spacious Japanese ryokans, fronted by a wide deck, plunge pool and ladder into the swirling blue sea.
Gili Lankanfushi is set in one of the most eye-wateringly beautiful lagoons in the country, a vision of broad white beaches, and all the villas here are stilted over the water, keeping the island wild and the beaches on full dazzling display.
At the JW Marriott Maldives Resort and Spa , an Indian Ocean version of the white-picket perfection of the Hamptons , there isn’t a hibiscus out of place or a palm that hasn’t been preened. This is an ultra-slick take on the tropical paradise blueprint.

When is the cheapest time to visit the Maldives?
The cheapest time to visit the Maldives is during the low season, which is May to November. The low season sees hotel rates drop substantially, with free transfers, free nights and room upgrades thrown in regularly. You risk some cloudy days and light showers, but temperatures remain in the mid-80s, so you're still in for a treat of a trip. A few extra tips: swap the seaplane for a speedboat to save yourself more than $250, and be on the lookout for new hotels, which offer introductory deals in the first few months of opening.

What is the best time to visit Maldives?
Even though the Maldives is a year-round destination, the best time to visit is from November to April, a dry season. The southwest monsoons bring in a few days of rainfall between May to October. However, it's essential to note that in the Maldives, rainfall is sporadic even during the wet season, and there are still plenty of sunny days. Dry Season (November to April): The Northern Atolls (Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani, Noonu, and Lhaviyani) and Central Atolls (Baa, Kaafu, and Alifu) experience the dry season from November to April. This dry season, with minimal rainfall and lower humidity, is perfect for enjoying the stunning beaches, water activities, and exploring the islands. The Southern Atolls (Gaafu Alifu, Gaafu Dhaalu, and Addu) experience slightly different weather patterns influenced by the southwest monsoons. The dry season typically extends from December to March or April, a bit later than the northern and central atolls. Wet Season (May to October): The southwest monsoon, which brings the rainy season to the Maldives, mainly affects the archipelago from May to October. During these months, the weather can be characterized by more frequent rainfall, higher humidity, and stronger winds, particularly in June and July. While the dry season is generally favored for its excellent weather conditions and suitability for water activities, some travelers prefer the offseason for quieter islands, potential discounts, and fewer tourists.

Best Time to Visit the Maldives: Month by Month Breakdown
The Maldives is renowned for its spectacular diving, serene white sand beaches, and paradisiacal island idylls, but knowing the best time to visit Maldives can really affect the experience you’ll have in this unique island nation.
Broadly speaking, the Maldives has two distinct seasons – a wet season and a dry season. The Maldives also has two distinct tourist seasons; peak season coincides with the dry season and low season with the wet season.
Throughout the year, there are other considerations to take into account, such as the manta ray season, the best time for diving, or when you can get the cheapest deals for your honeymoon!
In this article, we take a look at the best time to visit Maldives.
Don’t leave home without: Lonely Planet Maldives (Travel Guide)
Table of Contents
Dry Season in the Maldives
The Maldives has an incredibly tropical climate, which means that while there’s a wet and dry season, temperatures remain fairly constant throughout the year.
Even in ‘winter,’ temperatures average around 30 degrees Celsius.
The dry season is from November to April, and the peak of tourist season will often run from December through to March. Prices are higher in the dry season, and availability is lower, but the weather will be perfect.
If you’re scuba diving, the water is perfectly clear through the dry season.
Find great flight deals to the Maldives: Priceline or Skyscanner
November in the Maldives
November is the start of dry season, but it can be the best time to visit Maldives if you’re looking for bargains. The peak tourist season has yet to begin, but there’s little chance of rain, and plenty of deals to draw in the travelers!
You might be able to catch the last whale sharks around the Maldives before they start heading elsewhere in search of food. The manta rays are still in town, too.
Diving coral reefs still isn’t great, because the water has yet to clear up, but it’s definitely much better than previous months.
Resorts we love in the Maldives:
- Milaidhoo Island Maldives
- AYADA Maldives
- Baros Maldives
December in the Maldives
In December, you can expect the tourist season to begin in earnest as the countdown to Christmas holidays begins.
While the Maldives is a Muslim nation, a majority of their visitors are often from Western countries, and they make use of their Christmas holidays to visit.
The weather is lovely in December. The rains are over, and there are bright skies and sunshine almost every day of the week. Take some time off, book into a luxury resort, and enjoy the beautiful weather.
Prices are definitely on the high side through December, and you’ll need to book your flights and hotels in advance, as the best resorts can often sell out over the holiday period.
These are our recommended cruise options in for a Maldives trip:
- Maldives Dhoni Explorer 7 days, Male to Male
- Maldives Island Hopping 8 days, Hulhumale to Hulhumale
January in the Maldives
Prices remain exceptionally high as we enter the New Year; this is not the best time to visit Maldives if you’re looking for a bargain!
Tourist numbers are high, but the Maldives is never a destination that’s packed. Hotels, islands, and resorts all focus on sustainability, so even in peak season, you’ll never feel too overwhelmed.
This can be a great place to spend the New Year if you’re not on a budget and you’re looking for solitude or a romantic getaway with your partner.
Book out a private retreat and see the New Year in as you overlook the spectacular climes of the Indian Ocean from the comfort of an Overwater Bungalow!
If you are going to base yourself in Male, check out these top tours:
- Half-Day Walking Tour of Malé
- Snorkeling Safari
- Private Half-Day Local Experience of Malé
- Island Day Trip from Hulhumale
- 2-Hour Maldives Submarine Tour From Male
February in the Maldives
February can often be the driest month of the year, but you won’t have as high a price to pay for your hotels and flights as you would over December and January!
It’s a wonderful time to be here, with warm weather, clear skies, and zero chance of rain. You can enjoy super-clear diving and snorkeling in the Indian Ocean’s calm waters, and there is plenty of marine life around to keep you enthralled!
The top scuba diving resorts in the Maldives :
- One & Only Reethi Rah
- Soneva Fushi
- Kuredu Island Resort & Spa
March in the Maldives
March can be the best time to visit Maldives too because the weather is excellent. It’s lovely and warm, wonderfully clear, and perfectly dry!
You can lounge on white-sand beaches, snorkel among the coral reefs, or simply relax, unwind, and enjoy the famously good service at luxury resorts across the Maldives.
Maafushi Island is one of the best islands in the Maldives. Top places to stay on Maafushi Island, All are under $100 USD!
- Kaani Beach Hotel
- Kaani Grand Seaview
- Kaani Village & Spa
April in the Maldives
April is the last month of dry season, and it’s a great time to visit the Maldives. The weather is warm, and the skies are still clear, although you might have the odd rain shower towards the end of April.
Enjoy some excellent diving before the water starts to get murkier when the rains arrive, and explore the best white sand beaches in the Maldives and glorious island living that the islands are so loved for.
The top surf resorts in the Maldives :
- Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort – Lohis
- The Perfect Wave Cokes Surf Camp
- Six Senses – Laamu Atoll
Wet Season in the Maldives
The wet season runs from May through to October. This is the low season when it comes to tourist numbers. The Maldives gets hit by monsoon-like weather throughout the wet season, but actual conditions can vary.
You can risk the rain and get a really fantastic deal on luxury accommodations and cheap flights. It’s worth the risk for the savings, in our opinion, as there’s always plenty of time to relax in your luxury hotel!
While Scuba diving isn’t necessarily good for visibility, the vast amounts of plankton and algae in the water attract some pretty incredible creatures.
The wet season is the best time to visit the Maldives if you’re looking to swim with whale sharks or giant manta rays, as they are here to feed!
The best overwater bungalows in the Maldives are found either at the Park Hyatt Maldives , or the Four Seasons Maldives .
May in the Maldives
May is the start of the rainy season, but the reality is that you’d be pretty unlucky to get caught in a monsoon deluge straight away!
May is more of a transition month; you can still expect to see lots of sunshine and dry weather, mixed in with the odd thunderstorm and rain shower.
The water definitely starts to get choppier, but experienced divers will still have a great time enjoying the dive sites, as the water is still exceptionally clear.
You can start to pick up a few good deals in May, so it’s an excellent time for anyone looking for a cheaper holiday.
Thinadhoo Island is another top island in the Maldives. Top places to stay on Thinadhoo Island:
- Plumeria Maldives
- Casa Barabaru
- Hudhu Raakani Lodge
June in the Maldives
In June, the weather starts to take a turn for the worse, but it’s not all rain and monsoons.
The weather is wonderfully warm, but still not too humid; you will have a few days of sunshine and clear skies if you booked a getaway in June.
It’s a good time for a deal as hotels and resorts try to draw in tourists. Even if it does rain, you can simply enjoy the luxury facilities at your resort.
Relax with a massage, enjoy a few cocktails, or make the most of the wind and choppy seas for some action-packed water sports.
The best adults only resorts in the Maldives:
- Komandoo Maldives Island Resort
- Centara Ras Fushi Resort & Spa Maldives
July in the Maldives
In July, the weather gets worse. This isn’t the best time to visit Maldives if it’s clear skies and sparkling sunshine that you’re looking for.
Expect heavy thunderstorms and lots of rain. Scuba diving is challenging because of the rough seas and lack of visibility, but you will be able to spot whale sharks and manta rays as they start to appear to feed on the ever-growing mass of plankton in the waters.
Prices are reasonable in July, and 26th July is Independence Day; you can participate in nation-wide festivities and cultural events!
The best family-friendly resorts in the Maldives:
- Constance Moofushi Maldives
- Amari Havodda Maldives
- Lily Beach Resort and Spa
August in the Maldives
August sees a bit of a respite from the rain and the monsoon, although the weather can still be quite rough.
As it’s the school holidays in many parts of the world, tourist numbers start to pick up in August, so prices can begin to climb, despite this being the rainy season.
Unless you can only travel in August, though, there’s no real benefit to visiting the Maldives right now. You’re better off waiting for the drier weather or scoring a few bargains in earlier months of the wet season.
The best honeymoon resorts in the Maldives:
- Baros Maldives
- Six Senses Laamu
- Hurawalhi Island Resort
September in the Maldives
September can be the rainiest month of the year, so it’s not the best time to visit Maldives if you prefer to stay dry!
It can be wet, windy, and monsoony all through the month. Resorts stay open, though, and you can get some great deals. It’s a really good time for surfing in the Maldives, because the waves can be enormous!
If you are just here to relax and unwind, there’s no reason not to visit in September.
Enjoy the facilities at your resort, try some exceptional island-style dining, and enjoy the hot temperatures!
The best budget resorts in the Maldives:
- Paradise Island Resort & Spa
- Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives
- Bandos Maldives
October in the Maldives
The weather continues to get worse; October can be rainier than September. Don’t expect too many dry days, especially at the start of the month.
If you can, aim to arrive towards the end of the month, when the weather starts to dry up quickly as the dry season approaches.
This might be your last chance to see whale sharks and manta rays, as they tend to disappear at the end of October (at least in large numbers). You can also take advantage of the big waves to enjoy the fledgling surf scene in the Maldives.
For many people, October can be a great time to visit to save money, as prices are often at their lowest.
We spent 7 days sailing, scuba diving, and enjoying some of the best beaches in the Maldives on a liveaboard cruise on the Maldives Dhoni Explore.

Diving in the Maldives
These idyllic coral islands rank amongst the best dive destinations in the world. When conditions are good, the underwater visibility is at the highest level – sometimes exceeding 50 metres – and the warm water temperatures year-round make diving in the Maldives a pleasure. The North Malé Atoll is home to the Lion’s Head and Wattaru Kandu dive sites, both of which are frequented by reef sharks. Wattaru Kandu is also home to stingrays and garden eels whilst Lankanfinokhu, or Manta Point as it’s known locally, is a great place to see manta rays being cleaned by local colonies of cleaner fish.
In the South Malé Atoll, Hukrueli is another place to see rays and cleaner fish, and Maaya Thila, a protected marine area, is home to white-tip sharks, turtles, zebra morays and the elusive guitar shark. Hanifaru lagoon in the Baa Atoll is one of the best places to see whale sharks and manta rays – June to September being the best time as this is during the monsoon season and equinox when the lagoon is filled with plankton.
The Scuba Diver course provides pre-entry level certification in three days and on completion you can then upgrade to an Open Water Diver qualification by taking the additional five day course. Our Ten Dives and Six Consecutive Days diving allow qualified divers to make the most of their time in these beautiful islands. Courses are available at Kurumba Maldives, Dhigali Maldives, Velidhu and Meeru.
Best time to visit Maldives
Temperatures in the Maldives stay at a wonderfully warm 25-30°Cyear-round and only drop a few degrees at night. There’s an average of 8 hours of sunshine every day and the water temperature barely falls below 25°C. There are distinct wet (south-west monsoon) and dry (north-east monsoon) seasons; peak season for the Maldives is between December and April when the climate is drier, it’s less windy and the weather is hotter. Most travellers see this as the best time to go, but there are other factors to consider when choosing the time of year to travel here – like when to see specific marine life and when you’ll find the best value offers. Each island in the archipelago has its own microclimate, but there are general patterns that occur throughout the year.
The Maldives in January The Maldives’ weather in January is hot, with low humidity and plenty of sunshine. There may be some rain, but at this time of year it passes very quickly. It’s a great month to visit the Maldives and booking in advance is advised. There’s also great visibility for diving and snorkelling.
The Maldives in February February is an excellent time to travel to the Maldives. It’s the Maldives’ driest month, with less than 70mm of monthly rainfall, average maximum temperatures of 30°C and around 10 hours of sunshine each day. Visibility for diving and snorkelling is excellent.
The Maldives in March In March, temperatures in the Maldives rise to an average maximum of 31°C – great for long days on the beach. Possible short bursts of rain offer relief from the hot temperatures. Visibility for diving and snorkelling is excellent and March also sees the start of the surfing season in the Maldives.
The Maldives in April April is another wonderfully hot month in the Maldives. This is the end of the Maldives’ official dry season and there are often showers mid-month. It’s also a little more humid. Water visibility for diving and snorkelling is still very good.
The Maldives in May May is hot, with average maximum temperatures of 31°C, but is the start of the Maldives’ official wet season and comes with risks of storms and possible whole days of rain. Diving visibility is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water.
The Maldives in June June is another month in the Maldives with a high chance of rainfall. It’s a good time to take advantage of the best value offers if you’re willing to spend as much time enjoying your resort’s facilities as on the beach. Diving visibility is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water, however there’s a huge advantage for divers as manta rays and whale sharks come to feed on the plankton.
The Maldives in July The Maldives’ weather in July is hot and humid, with short heavy downpours. This is another time to check for great value offers and is particularly good for surfers. Water visibility for diving is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water, but the big draw underwater is the presence of manta rays and whale sharks. 26July is Independence Day and you may see small parades and public celebrations on resort islands.
The Maldives in August August in the Maldives is hot and humid, with an average 7 hours of sunshine each day and short heavy downpours. Diving visibility is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water, but enticing offers mean this is still a popular time to visit.
The Maldives in September September is one of the Maldives’ wettest months. It sees average maximum temperatures of 30°C, and there’s still an average 7 hours of sunshine each day. Diving visibility is slightly reduced due to the plankton in the water, but there are great opportunities to spot whale sharks and manta rays feeding on the plankton.
The Maldives in October October is the Maldives’ wettest month, with high humidity and with possible whole days of rain. It’s a good time to take advantage of the best value offers if you’re willing to spend as much time enjoying your resort’s facilities as on the beach. October is the last month of the Maldives’ surfing season and the last month of the year for good sightings of whale sharks and manta rays.
The Maldives in November In November, temperatures in the Maldives are an average maximum of 30°C. The official wet season is finishing and although there are showers, the rain passes quickly.
The Maldives in December The climate for the Maldives in December is largely hot and dry, though mid-month showers are likely. It’s an excellent choice for some winter sun. Christmas and New Year are particularly popular and may include minimum stays.
A note on Ramadam The exact date of the holy month of Ramadan (known as Ramazan in the Maldives) changes each year. Guests visiting Maldives’ resorts during the holy month are unlikely to notice anything different to any other month – meals and alcohol are served as usual. If you’re visiting a local island, there will be some restrictions that you’ll understandably be asked to respect.

the weather was the way you wanted it to be. The sun was shining and it was warm. In the evening when you wanted to go to the sea the weather was still very nice and warm.
Weather Rating: 5 stars – Excellent
Constant 30 degrees for 14 days, in one day for 10 minutes of rain! Otherwise only sun!!!!
One or two short rains. More often cloudy. Otherwise Top!
Weather Rating: 4 stars – Good
It rained heavier for at least 1x day. On some days it rained from morning to evening, although it was usually very windy.
Weather Rating: 3 stars – Mixed
Pleasant warmth. Mostly dry. Nights pleasant.1 day was rainy. Otherwise very nice.
During the 3 days only storm and rain. You couldn’t even go swimming in the sea.
Weather Rating: 0 stars – Catastrophic
It was a mix of sun and clouds, but always pleasantly warm.
Except for one day it was sunny and warm. Occasional showers came more at night. The water was pleasant and the air temperature too.
We defied all warnings and advice and went to the Maldives in August, far away from the best travel season. Our wedding on 08.08. and the Maldives has always been a huge travel dream for us. So there was actually no alternative but to dare, because we did not want to wait until winter for our honeymoon. We flew with Emirates over Dubai and spent 10 nights in a pool villa on Baros Maldives. It was magical, magical, uniquely beautiful! Yeah, we had rain once. Usually it was heavy tropical showers that lasted about an hour. After that it cleared up and was sunny. Yes, it was a bit windy on some days, but nothing that would knock down a North German. And yes, in 3 days we had cloudy skies. This was not quite perfect for photos, but it was still hot and the Maldives Resorts also offer a lot of activities during the supposed “rainy season”. Above all, one thing must not be forgotten: For the fun of it, we had asked for an offer for the same flights and accommodation in December – the price was 2.5 times as high as in August! We got a real bargain and had a wonderful time.
We were on Holiday Island in June 2017 and the weather was very nice for 10 days. One day it was cloudy and my husband said: it was raining today. I was looking forward to it, wanted to stand in the rain on this beautiful island. The clouds moved on and it hasn’t rained a drop in 10 days. But we had fantastic pictures of the underwater world. We haven’t been there the last time….. bought us snorkel masks would like to go back to paradise?????????????????????????????
At 16 days 2 short showers. 3-4 days more wind.
This was already the 3rd time in May in the Maldives and we always had very good weather. With 12 vacation days usually 1 day of bad weather (wind, rain and high waves), otherwise always sunshine and good visibility under water.

No matter whether you are looking for an idyllic beach getaway or have a dream to enjoy the moments of solace in the lap of nature and in the most luxurious way, Maldives doesn’t disappoint you.

Things to Do in the Maldives
Right from the exhilarating water sports to the mesmerising sights of the ‘Sea of Stars,’ the list of things to do in the Maldives is pretty long. This dreamy lagoon, with so many options, can make your vacation relaxing yet action-packed. Here we’ve some of the popular things that you can enjoy on this island destination.
1. Go Scuba Diving
If you want to behold the astonishing oceanic beauty, then perhaps you may love to dive deep into the waters of Maaya Thila, Maldives. The oceanic base of Maaya Thila is home to some of the most spectacular marine species which can only be witnessed if you get to the depth of its water. For Thalassophiles, it is certainly a thing to experience.
2. Witness the ‘Sea of Stars’
Visit the "Sea of Stars" on Vaadhoo Island to spice up your normal beach days. Here under the moonlight, the sea waters appear to glow magnificently. This is known as bioluminescence, and it is displayed by free-floating microscopic planktons in the water as a defence mechanism when they are attacked by fish. This phenomenon causes the water to appear blue and gleaming. The water is completely safe to play with because the blue light released is cool and produces no heat.
3. Go Surfing
Although surfing is one of the most famous watersports, not every ocean-facing island is suitable for it, except it is the Maldives. It is one of the most popular surfing locations in the world due to its massive waves that curl up at the perfect time to allow you to surf and get clicked for Instagram stories. The suitable geographical advantage offered by the Maldives, particularly in and around Central, Southern, and Male Atolls make this destination a surfers’ paradise.
4. Go for Island Hopping
The Maldives Islands are made up of over 1000 islands and are home to some of the most unspoilt beaches on the planet. So, island hopping is one thing that you may want to do in the Maldives. To experience the magical beauty of the pristine islands of this magnificent archipelago, it is highly recommended that you go for sunset sailing. Take a joyous hour-long ride in the evening on a native Dhoni or a boat to behold and experience the most gorgeous views of the sunset as you calmly cruise on the waters. Other than soaking in the panoramic views of nature, you may also get the chance to spot lovely dolphins.

Engage in water skiing If riding on the waves seems thrilling and exciting to you. This is one of the water sports that you may want to try on the waters of the Maldives. Even if you are a beginner and have never tried it before, you can take the assistance of professionals who will tell you how to do it safely. You can try water skiing on Meeru Island in the Maldives.

One of the most interesting things to do in the Maldives is parasailing, which allows you to cruise over the sky while feeling the cold sea breeze gently caressing your face. While parasailing, you get to behold and soak in the breathtaking panoramic views of this archipelago. There are several atolls here that give you the opportunity to partake in this activity. Some of them are Cocoon Beach, Reethi Beach, and Finolhu Beach.

4. Vaadhoo Island
Vaadhoo Island is a stunning Maldivian island with beautiful beaches, spectacular sceneries, and hypnotic beauty. When the sun sets on Vaadhoo Island, the sea waves touching the shore illuminate like a dazzling field of blue dots, offering the sea the illusion of a starlit night sky.
The bloom of phytoplankton, or aquatic critters that light in the dark, causes this remarkable phenomenon to occur in the late summer months. If you shake the water, the plankton will swirl around the lovely blue light, creating a captivating view. When you sail offshore, your chances of spotting this increase. The microscopic organisms emit light as the waves crash against the boat. The best time to see the ‘Sea of Stars’ in the Maldives is the late summer which is between June to October.
5. Fulhadhoo Island
Located in the southern Maalhosmadulhu Atoll, it is one of the most calming islands in the Maldives, with pristine lagoons, white sand beaches, lush palm trees, and a quiet ambience. This island is one of the least visited and most remote in the Maldives, but it is rich in hidden gems. Divers, snorkelers, and turtle and dolphin watchers are some of the popular activities on Fulhadhoo Island. During their vacation to this gorgeous island, visitors also spend time swimming in the azure lagoons and relaxing at the opulent beach resorts. A short walk through the eastern village will also allow you to discover the rich culture of this fascinating Maldivian island. The good time to visit Fulhadoo Island in the Maldives is between July and October.
Best Season to Visit Maldives
To help you experience the magnificent Maldives in the best season, here we’ve divided the best time for the Maldives into three categories. Let’s take a glance at them: -
1. High Season: December to February
Speaking of the best time to visit the Maldives from India, there is no better window than between the months of December to February. During these months, the place has the nicest weather. You can expect little rain, mild humidity, and clear skies. No surprise that these months are the best time to visit the Maldives for a honeymoon. However, during the Christmas and New Year holidays, prices skyrocket, and many resorts here require a minimum stay of five days or more.
2. Shoulder Season: March to April
The shoulder season in the Maldives is suitable for heat-seekers. The wonderful weather continues to remain until April’s end when the temperature will be at its peak. The season for surfers starts in the month of March and lasts until October. This season can be the right time to visit the Maldives, especially for travellers who want the place to be less crowded.
3. Low Season: May to November
This season is the best season to go to the Maldives for those who are on a budget. Storms and rainfall are more frequent, but the weather is still pleasant and resorts are at their most affordable. At this time of year, the marine life, on the western side of atolls, is more diverse.
So, now that you have learned about the different Maldives seasons to visit this wonderful archipelago, make sure you plan well ahead of time for a seamless experience.

Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Verma’s Travel to India, Maldives, and Sri Lanka
Office of the Spokesperson
February 16, 2024
Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Richard R. Verma will travel to India, Maldives, and Sri Lanka on February 18-23 to strengthen the United States’ cooperation with each of these key Indo-Pacific partners. Shortly following the two-year anniversary of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Strategy, his trip will reaffirm the United States’ enduring commitment to a free, open, secure, and prosperous region.
In New Delhi, India, Deputy Secretary Verma will meet with senior government officials, business leaders, and entrepreneurs to advance the U.S.-Indian global strategic partnership on a full range of issues, including economic development, security, and technology.
From India, Deputy Secretary Verma will travel to Malé, Maldives, to meet with senior officials and advance shared priorities in increasing economic cooperation and promoting maritime security. The Deputy Secretary will also tour the planned office space for a new U.S. Embassy in Malé, which will help further increase people-to-people ties between the United States and Maldives.
Deputy Secretary Verma will conclude his trip in Colombo, Sri Lanka. His meetings with senior officials will support U.S.-Sri Lankan defense and maritime security cooperation. The Deputy Secretary will visit the Port of Colombo’s West Container Terminal, where the United States is supporting Sri Lanka’s ongoing economic recovery through $553 million in financing to transform Colombo into a regional shipping hub. Finally, he will meet with civil society leaders to hear their perspective on democratic governance in Sri Lanka and with government officials to voice U.S. support for the protection of free speech and open discourse.

India's projects in Maldives gain pace, despite strained security ties
By Krishn Kaushik
NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India has stepped up development assistance to the Maldives with projects gaining pace last year, even as ties have soured over new Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu's demand for Indian troops to leave his country.
As global powers jostle for influence in the Indo-Pacific region, India and China have wooed the Indian Ocean nation, which has traditionally been close to neighbour India, but recently pivoted towards China under Muizzu.
New Delhi has spent nearly 7.71 billion rupees ($93 million), or almost twice its budgeted 4 billion on projects in the Maldives during this fiscal year, which ends in March, according to an Indian official and government documents.
That comes despite strained ties since Muizzu rode to office in October pledging to end the country's "India First" policy and ensure it removed nearly 80 Indian troops.
Despite the roadblock, "development co-operation has not changed or stopped," said an Indian official aware of the matter, who added that New Delhi had a two-fold engagement strategy for Male.
Rather, "the pace of the projects is faster," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, attributing the swifter pace to India's increased allocations this fiscal year.
Muizzu's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The efforts include a $500-million project for roads and bridges around Male, and two airports worth nearly $130 million each in the archipelago's distant islands, supported through a line of credit from India.
Muizzu made a state visit to Beijing last month but has yet to visit India.
The two countries agreed this month to replace the troops by May. India says they provide help with humanitarian aid and medical evacuations using aircraft it has provided.
Indian budget documents presented to parliament on Feb. 1 show that New Delhi spent 1.83 billion rupees in fiscal 2022-23, which went up to 7.71 billion this year, a figure that is second only to neighbouring Bhutan, where India spent 24 billion.
India has set aside 6 billion rupees in initial allocation for the Maldivian projects next year.
But Male's closer engagement with Beijing saw it recently allow a Chinese research vessel to dock at its port, despite New Delhi's concerns that information gathered by such ships can be used by China's military for deployment in India's backyard.
"The presence of extra-regional powers that impact the security of the Indian Ocean region is a red line for us," the official said, referring to China.

Lok Sabha Polls 2024: PM Modi's first visit to Kashmir Valley next week after Article 370 abrogation, say reports
This will be Prime Minister Modi's first visit to the Kashmir Valley since his government abrogated Article 370 in August 2019
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Kashmir valley next week and address a public rally ahead of Lok Sabha polls 2024.
This will be Prime Minister Modi 's first visit to the Kashmir Valley since his government abrogated Article 370 , that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, and bifurcated the state into two Union Territories in August 2019.
Last time, the prime minister was in the valley in February 2019 ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
The prime minister is scheduled to address a public rally in Srinagar on March 7 and launch various schemes, according to a report which added that the rally will be held at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre along the picturesque Dal Lake.
"It was a longstanding demand of people here that the Prime Minister come and address them. Now on March 7, he will be addressing a rally," NDTV quoted Jammu and Kashmir BJP chief Ravinder Raina as saying.
Other reports by news agency PTI, and local newspaper Greater Kashmir suggested that the rally will be held in south Kashmir's Anantnag district.

The public rally is part of BJP's election campaign for the forthcoming general polls, news agency PTI quoted sources saying that the Anantnag rally will be held between March 7 and 15.
While the National Conference holds three Lok Sabha seats of Kashmir Valley, the BJP won two seats in Jammu region in 2019. The lone seat in Ladakh is also with the BJP.
The BJP is focussing on the Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha seat which comprises of the south Kashmir areas of Shopian, Kulgam and Anantnag, and Rajouri-Poonch areas in Jammu. Before delimitation, the Anantnag seat comprised only of the four south Kashmir districts - Shopian, Kulgam, Pulwama and Anantnag.
The seat was won by National Conference's Justice Hasnain Masoodi (retd) in 2019.
This would be PM Modi's second visit to Jammu and Kashmir in less than a month. The PM addressed a public rally in Jammu on February 20 during which he also launched development projects worth over ₹ 32,000 crore across the country.
The Bhartiya Janata Party has set a target of 370 seats and 400 + for the NDA. Prime Minister Modi had for the first time mentioned the target 370 while speaking at the Jammu rally.

The prime minister has been on a whirlwind tour of the country ahead of the announcement of Lok Sabha polls next month. His speeches focus on 'Modi's Guarantees' in which he highlight how his government’s welfare schemes are not just promises but have in fact benefited beneficiaries.
While the Kashmir visit is aimed at Lok Sabha polls , it also assumes significance given the state assembly election scheduled after Lok Sabha polls in Jammu and Kashmir. The erstwhile state has been under President's rule since July 2018 when the Bharatiya Janata Party- People's Democratic Party alliance government collapsed.
The last Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir were held in 2014.
