Big Wheel Tours has been operating in Palm Springs since 1998 and has helped tens of thousands of visitors, and local residents of Palm Springs area experience the Coachella valley areas’ Natural wonders.

Evan is a USCF racer who stays in shape by riding with the Desert Bicycle Club. While he doesn’t get out on tour as often as he used to, Evan’s philosophy is to hire the area’s best guides to provide clients with a memorable experience during their stay in the Coachella Valley.

What are the Popular Tours?

Tours range from visiting Joshua Tree National Park to the San Andreas Fault. From all the way out to the Salton Sea in the east and their guides will tailor an outdoor adventure for you.

Earthquake Canyon Express Bicycle Tour

Some of the more popular Palm Springs tours are ones like the Earthquake Canyon Express Bicycle Tour. You can see in the video below. On this tour, riders are treated to a beautiful geological extravaganza on this 20-mile tour that descends all the way through the heart of the San Andreas Fault zone.

The ride is fairly smooth and it’s paved road. There are no crossroads and there’s no turns and very little traffic, which makes it a very relaxing adventure for sure.

Riders can expect to see the stark beauty of the desert as they descend a total of 1200 feet over the route.

Joshua Tree National Park Jeep Tour

Big Wheels Tours uses a rugged backcountry trail through the Little San Bernardino Mountains to take you from the Colorado Desert to over 4,000 feet high in the Mojave Desert.

All the riders will be treated to a magnificent unspoiled desert vista, spectacular rock formations, unique plant and animal life, and outstanding geology.

San Andreas Fault Jeep Tour

The other popular tour that we do is the San Andreas Fault jeep tour. Come and see where earthquakes are born. You’re going to see firsthand what geologists have called the most tortured landscape on earth as you visit the backcountry trails of The wilderness zone.

There’ll be Canyon walls that are sheer drops, abundant native plant life, animal life, and all sorts of other highlights on this tour. This is one of the most colorful portions of the San Andreas fault line.

Indian Canyon Bike and Hike Tour

They start riding from their shop in downtown Palm Springs. The bike route goes for a 10-mile round trip and takes them through some of Palm Springs, older neighborhoods, including the Canyon Country club and the Indian Canyons.

Then they take a local hike, an easy scenic nature walk that includes several stream crossings, incredible rock formations, wildlife sightings, and a canopy of native palm trees.

Guests will enjoy the varied and exotic scenery so close to downtown palm springs.

“There’s the sense of freedom, of independence. You’re outdoors, getting low-impact exercise, with a little element of added speed. The human and machine together. It’s just the coolest thing all around, in my opinion.”

Evan Trubee’s got it right: There simply isn’t any hipper way to get a workout, soak up sun, and sightsee around the city streets and desert landscapes of Greater Palm Springs than by bicycling.

Trubee’s passion for peddling informs more than just his own life. It also defines the vibe at his company, Big Wheel Tours, which this year marked two decades in the Coachella Valley. Stop by Big Wheel Tours’ recently opened Palm Springs space on South Palm Canyon Drive and you’re likely to be amazed at what the good old bicycle has become these days.

“They’re just — wow,” says Trubee. “Everything about them is enormously improved. The materials, the craftsmanship. They take you faster, farther, and so much smoother.”

Some of them even give a boost to your own leg-power: “e-assist” bicycles, introduced by Big Wheel Tours several months ago, are the latest advancement in two-wheeled tech. You have to peddle in order to draw on the extra juice — the machine’s still a bike, not a motor-scooter. But the supportive assist, according to Trubee, can do something more than just help a weary rider up a steep hill.

“In a mixed group, such as grandparents and grandkids,” he explains, “they can all now ride together — the e-assist feature evens everything out. The e-bikes are so much fun!”

If you’re keeping things simple and just want to rent a bike and venture off on your own, rates range from $12 an hour for a KHS TC100 comfort mountain bike or Benno Upright 7 street cruiser to $295 for a week with one of the elite electric bikes.

Guided Rides

Big Wheel Tours offers a range of opportunities to see the sights through the eyes of an experienced crew of guides, all of whom display passionate and knowledgeable enthusiasm for everything that makes the desert environs unique. These guide-led options include an Indian Canyons Bike-and-Hike tour, as well as customized private rides. Itinerary and duration of these private tours are worked out by you and Big Wheel Tours. Trubee describes them as “totally open-ended rides. Basically, we go until the group has had enough.” Prices for, say, a four-to-six-hour guided mountain bike tour for your group range from $125 to $250 per person, depending on the group’s size. (So if you’re your group, expect to pay the extra.)

Comfort Zone

If you like the idea of a guided tour, but, really, enough with the peddling already, Big Wheel Tours offers tours by Jeep or SUV. The twice-a-day Joshua Tree National Park Jeep Adventure is the popular choice at $169 a head.

After you’ve scouted the website, make sure to call to announce your interest. This will give Trubee, or Palm Springs native Ali Snowden (she’s in charge of that Palm Springs location), the chance to start the process of matching rider with appropriate ride — “one size does not fit all,” is Snowden’s creed — and touring package. And just in case you decide to save all your energy for the cycling itself, Big Wheel Tours will even deliver your chosen machine right to your hotel or time-share.

Additionally, if your sense of adventure is balanced by a tendency to worry that if something can go wrong it will, know that Big Wheel Tours doesn’t leave you unsupported. In addition to the helmet, maps, and route advice, and the fix-a-flat gear that’s tucked in a pouch underneath your bike’s seat, the Big Wheel Tour phone number is your lifeline if you are out and about but can’t, for whatever reason, ride another inch.

Discover Palm Springs On A Bike Tour

Tourists make the best tour guides. Their exuberance for discovery spurs them forward, their curiosity for details fuels their soul, and their connection with their surroundings becomes contagious until you’re swept into the flow of an adventure in the making.

Meet Big Wheel Tour owner Even Trubee.

Such is the life journey of Evan Trubee, owner of  Big Wheel Tours .

Although he has lived in Palm Springs for two and a half decades, Evan’s enthusiasm for exploration is as vibrant as a cactus flower, which continues to bloom. “I used to come visit out here when I was in high school, and I just fell in love with the desert,” declares Trubee. “I said, ‘As soon as I get out of college, I’m gonna go move out there,’ and sure enough, I did!”

The year was 1993, and the landscape was fertile with possibilities, even if it meant juggling two jobs. “There was a company called Adventure Bike Tours years ago out here,” Trubee recounts. “It was something to do during the day when I waited tables at night. I started working for them as a tour guide, enjoyed the heck out of it, loved the climate, the desert, the area, and working with the tourists and everything!”

Side note: the frequent exclamation points peppering this article aren’t merely editorial flourishes; they accurately depict Evan’s boundless dedication to his craft. He has translated this vigor into his very own business, but like every great expedition, it began with a few small steps.  Or pedals, as the case may be.

Doing What I Love

“So, I started out with bicycles because that’s just what I love. It was my passion; I was cycling anyway. But then I started hiring.” Trubee sought a staff member who would reflect his adventurous qualities and amplify them for the paying public. “If we had a large group, we would put guides on the buses who had a natural science background and could talk about plants, animals, and geology. So that expanded the scope of what I was able to offer.”

Stepping back with a note of reflection, Trubee recalls, “And I said, ‘Well, geez – we’ve already got a decent reputation, concierges and other people are already using us for these outdoor tours anyway, so why not utilize that resource and put the guides into Jeeps and start booking Jeep tours?’ And luckily, it worked.”

Adding Jeeps to Big Wheel Tours

“We’re unique, for sure,” assesses Trubee, who brazenly challenges the larger operations in the area. “We’ve got three Jeeps and two SUVs, so smaller capacity, but I like to think we’re on par in terms of quality.”

Trubee’s approach melds a personal touch with a professional discipline, and his positivity is inescapable.

“Sometimes we go out on tour, and people are still on their cell phones when we’re in the service [area]. But at a certain point on our tours, you get out of the cell phone coverage, so you have to get your eyes up, be aware of your surroundings, and soak in the natural beauty. So it forces you to do that.”

Love of Landscape

When Evan Trubee describes his love of landscape, it plays like a symphony that echoes through the canyons and forms a majestic harmony with the earth, air, and fiery beauty of the Inland Empire. “It is unique and rugged. The wide-open vistas, the incredible towering mountains, the fact that you’re transitioning between Colorado and Sonora desert.”

Reaching a fever pitch, Trubee exclaims, “Incredible climate! The weather is incredible, with blue skies almost every day. When you live out here all winter, you forget how awful it is in the rest of the country during the winter.”

Endless Summers

A transplant from New Jersey, Trubee repeatedly expresses his appreciation for Palm Springs’s endless summers. “My first couple of years out here, it was so much fun not to deal with winter.” Summoning Riverside County’s warmth, Trubee continues, “It’s exotic. When you grow up back east, it’s hard to believe this is still the United States. I mean, it’s so exotic and arid and otherworldly.”

No wonder he was eager to raise a family in this sprawling utopia, but times have changed since Evan was a youngster. “With my kids, for example, they don’t get out and play as much as I did growing up. I think that’s just a part of our culture.” But Trubee aims to recapture his youth through the work of Big Wheel Tours . “So this is a chance for people to get out and play in the open desert. We take you out to real wilderness areas in Joshua Tree National Park and the San Andreas Fault, and then on your bike, you’re exercising, too. So it is kinda like bringing out the kid in ya.”

Serenity is one of Trubee’s most valuable discoveries among the rocks and ravines of our hometown. “There’s just something about the setting that keeps people relaxed; that forces you, almost, to be relaxed. It’s hard to get stressed out when you live here…” Trubee pauses for effect before extending his hospitality to the world at large, finally adding, “…or visit!”
