Leica M-P 240 Safari Edition Review

LEICA REVIEW

Introduction

Leica M-P Safari Edition is one of the latest limited edition box sets offered by Leica camera. It features a Leica M-P (Typ 240) Digital Rangefinder Camera in olive green color with a silver colored Leica Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH Lens . Another exclusive limited version of this box set is offered with Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH. Lens again in silver color which is priced about three times the price of buying a  Leica M-P (Typ 240) Digital Rangefinder Camera and a Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH. Lens . This means if you really want to own this olive color camera instead of plain black or silver on black versions available then you must pay that extra premium of three times the price.

Another option is to buy the Leica Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH Lens version of the box set and toss away the Summicron and buy a Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH. Lens and save about the price of a Leica Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH Lens set price.

Sadly, while the Leica Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH Lens version box set sells for a reasonable price when the premium version is sought for the markup becomes insanely high. This goes for other limited edition box sets like Lenny Kravitz reporter which is basically a distressed black Leica M-P (Typ 240) Digital Rangefinder Camera  with lenses which can be purchased from any Leica dealer. If you are willing to let go of the distressed look of the camera, you can buy two sets of the same set of camera and lens combination. Of course, the black leather attache case that looks like it was purchased from a second-hand clothing store will be missing in the ensemble.

These are marketing decision of Leica Camera. They gear to an elite group of customers and professionals who demand the best in the world and often for the wealthy clientele price is no object which means they would not mind paying three times the price of a box set sans olive green color.

I own the Leica Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH Lens version of this box set. It is still reasonably priced, and all I had to do is sell the lens to buy a Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH lens to have a proper set instead of an “average Joe” who bought his first Leica camera look.

I know there are plenty of people who adore Leica Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH lens . Everyone has different preferences. I am a professional, so my set of requirements are different than weekend family dad photographing his children. I need the extra light gathering capabilities and bokeh to photos that stand out.

While some may argue that Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH lens is more than sufficient for any photographic endeavor, I dare ask what then would be the use of buying Leica S line of camera and lenses. Better yet on your smartphone or laptop screen can you possibly tell the difference between a  Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH lens and Summarit 35mm f/2.4 photograph. If your answer is no, then you may want to ask yourself why to pay the difference.

Getting back to Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH lens , it is a beautiful lens, but it has its design flaws. No, not on the lens elements but on the way little things are put together. For example, when you attach the lens hood to protect the lens from flares you may notice that putting the lens cap back on is near impossible. A quick solution is to remove the lens hood then place the lens cap back on it, put away the lens hood then take it out everytime you want to take a photograph. Sounds simple right, it is, and I wonder why no one at Leica has thought of finding a simple solution to a simple problem when designing such simple things.

Beyond that, the lens design is magical as ever. You get that all in focus look that street photographers love with hyperfocal focus and the bokeh is, well, there is a bokeh wide open but nothing to write home about. It is there, and it is not magical in any respect, but again this is not Leica’s premium top of the line lens which is an easy way of saying you get what you pay for.

On the positive side, the lens hood is solid metal. Thank God, because plastic lens hoods break and with a production cost of a pennies it should not take a genius to say hey let’s put a lens hood that does not break easily. So, I applaud Leica for this piece of fine craftsmanship.

As far as Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH lens is concerned we have a complete review of this lens on our website; I invite you to read it. This lens is about 340 grams or 12 ounces approximately with a minimum focus distance of 70 cm.  or 2.30′ ft. The design incorporates seven elements in 5 groups with an aspherical coating on the lens surface to reduce chromatic aberrations.

MFT charts which show the amount of distortion on this lens indicate that this is a low distortion lens which practically eliminates all distortion on the image at f/5.6. Good news for those who would want to use this lens at apertures stopped down, a blessing for street photographers who use zone system.

If you asked me if I would like I suggest this lens to anyone, my answer would be a resounding yes. Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH lens is the lens I would buy my son or daughter if he were graduating university. This is the lens for those who have the money to do away with large, bulky DSLR systems and purchase a lens that can do pretty much everything, “Jack of all trades” kind of lens. So, definitely, this lens would serve the needs of more than 99% of Leica camera buyers who just want to shoot photographs on their travels or family gatherings or indulge in the phantasy that they are street photographers because they take candid shots of people walking on the street and share on their social media platforms.

Beyond that, there is that 1% who just need to have that Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH lens for their professional needs and perhaps for those few who can look at a photograph and tell the difference between a Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH lens and a Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH lens .

Leica M-P 240 Camera Safari Edition Review by Master Photographer Oz Yilmaz. Leica review examines the Leica M-P 240 Camera Safari Edition for best results.

As far as the aesthetics of this lens camera combination is concerned, it is beautiful nostalgic. This is the camera we would image Hemmingway photographing with if he was alive or that African safari from the 1960’s, wealthy New York family who just saw an elephant for the first time. Yes, I love this lens and camera for that nostalgic feeling that transports me to a different era when things were innocent and being a photographer meant that you would need to understand lighting and aperture, depth of field, composition.

Long gone are days of darkroom film developing and large format cameras with slide backs, a new era of smartphone shooters and social media tools is ushered in and in this world of fast moving, use and throw away culture Leica stands as a testament to value and old fashion quality.

If you talk to any photographer about their cameras and lenses, they will most likely tell you that they are loved and become like family. In this day and age with smartphones being replaced every year by consumers owning a Leica flies against conventional thinking because when you own a Leica, you keep it for years, even a lifetime. That is why greater photographers accumulate cameras over the span of their careers because we get attached to our lens and cameras.

Leica M-P 240 Camera Safari Edition Review by Master Photographer Oz Yilmaz. Leica review examines the Leica M-P 240 Camera Safari Edition for best results.

Speaking of cameras, this Leica Safari Edition box set comes with limited edition olive green Leica M-P (Typ 240) Digital Rangefinder Camera which is the latest version of Leica cameras featuring a 24 megapixel CMOS sensor with an improved dynamic range over their M9 cameras with CCD sensors.

The exterior olive green coating is resistant to finger marks, UV light, chemicals and light scratches which make it ideal for professional and everyday use. Leica M-P (Typ 240) Digital Rangefinder Camera also features Leica Maestro sensor which can capture images in low light due to improved ISO.

Olive green colored Leica M-P (Typ 240) Digital Rangefinder Camera  is a delight to carry around as the other Leica rangefinder cameras because the weight is mere 680 gram or 1.5 lbs which are less than most professional DSLR cameras.

More importantly, the camera does not attract any unwanted attention because of its looks and omission of Leica logo in the front. Out of all the marketing moves Leica made in the last decade or so omitting the Logo, and large lettering from the front of the camera is the best advancement in design that has come forth. The P on the Leica M-P (Typ 240) Digital Rangefinder Camera stands for professional which is often the way professionals wish that they had their camera. Thank Goodness that we no longer have to put black tape on the front of the camera. Far Eastern camera manufacturers I hope will take a hint and learn from Leica camera’s smart move.

For those who love to flash designer name bags and expensive watches, Leica still produces Leica M-P (Typ 240) Digital Rangefinder Camera which is basically the same camera with the logo. For those who are a more discrete olive green colored camera from Leica camera is a pleasure to own and will serve a lifetime of good service with proper maintenance.

Leica M-P 240 Camera Safari Edition Review by Master Photographer Oz Yilmaz. Leica review examines the Leica M-P 240 Camera Safari Edition for best results.

There are minor improvements on this camera with regards to the previous M9 version of Leica’s cameras which you can also read on our website. Without going into too much detail, this camera features a 920k Sapphire crystal LCD screen. Yes, a double Yes. Finally, Leica has put away their LCDs circa the 1980s to give Leica user the ability to see if he or she has gotten the proper focus and exposure.

You see there are those people who love film. I virtually spend more than 15 years in darkrooms and chemicals to develop film. The film has an ISO that can’t be altered, and the photographs can’t be viewed when taken while the idea of taking photographs with film cameras may be a pleasurable past time from a professional point of view it is a blessing to have digital photographs that rival film.

I like being able to see if I have captured the right facial expression, I like to know if my photographs are to my liking, if I have managed to convey the sentiment I intended to capture through my LCD screen.

Unfortunately, Leica refused to place a usable LCD screen on the back of their cameras for the longest time. It may be because of a belief that a photograph should not be viewed immediately or film era photo can be transmitted to the modern age by omitting proper LCD screens on cameras.

Now the camera is a very user-friendly camera with a well thought out menu to scroll through to set the appropriate settings to the users’ choice. Easy access to shutter dial, ISO, and thumb dial is a way any professional camera should be designed. In this regard, most camera manufacturers are doing a disservice to consumers by omitting an easy access to these settings through simple dials. Again this is perhaps one of the reasons why Leica has endured through decades.

CMOS sensor on the olive green Leica M-P (Typ 240) Digital Rangefinder Camera also allows Live View to be used. This just means that the Leica M-P 240 camera user can opt to use live view to capture critical focus or turn on the video recording to film. An amazing advancement in design as this versatile camera allows very accurate focus and video capabilities which were not available on the previous CCD based Leica cameras.

This concludes the first part of our review of Leica M-P Safari Edition. I hope you have enjoyed this article and our video. Please read our next review when we examine more closely this lens and camera set from Leica.

Leica Announces M10-P & 50mm f/2 ‘Safari’ Editions

Today, Leica Camera has launched the first special edition of the M10-P digital rangefinder in the USA: the Leica M10-P Edition ‘Safari,' along with a matching (but separately sold) lens: the Leica Summicron-M 50mm f/2 Edition ‘Safari.' The M10-P Edition ‘Safari' is limited to 1,500 pieces worldwide, and the lens to just 500 pieces. This is a break from Leica's past Safari Edition releases, which always included a silver chrome lens as a set. The most recent Leica M-P (Typ 240) Safari Set , for example, included a Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH in silver chrome; there was no way to get the camera body on its own. Personally I welcome this change, because Leica is not forcing a lens on someone who might already have that focal length in their kit. With Leica's wide range of silver chrome lenses , there are many options available to suit your particular need.

M10-P Edition ‘Safari'

Painted in the classic Safari color, called “olive green” by Leica, the M10-P Edition ‘Safari' features silver chrome accents, silver rear buttons and a green leatherette body covering. The top plate prominently displays the classic Leica script logo in white paint, as with the standard-production M10-P models .

It's easy to miss, but the MADE IN GERMANY engraving is painted in the body color on the M10-P Edition ‘Safari,' unlike the regular M10-P.

A minor, but nonetheless interesting change is the “MADE IN GERMANY” engraving on the back of the camera is not painted in a contrasting color, unlike the white lettering on the black M10-P, or black lettering on the silver M10-P. This is a small but appreciated touch which makes the camera just a bit more special. A brown leather carrying strap and SD/credit card wallet are included as well.

Summicron-M 50mm f/2 Edition ‘Safari'

If you do want to get your hands on a matching lens, the Summicron-M 50mm f/2 Edition ‘Safari' is the first ever M-system lens painted in Leica's olive green color. Based on the venerable and compact  Summicron-M 50mm f/2 lens, this is sure to be a future collectible (especially with only 500 pieces being produced). The focal length indicator and feet distance scale are both painted in contrasting red. If you already have a prior Safari edition Leica, this lens would pair perfectly, although I can't imagine it would look too good on anything else! Leica's press release below is a bit vague as to whether the lens barrel is brass or aluminum, but we'll be sure to update this post with the right specification when we have it.

Press Release

Leica Camera is excited to announce new special editions of the esteemed Leica M10-P camera body and the renowned Leica Summicron-M 50mm f/2 lens, both being made available and sold separately in ‘Safari' Editions. The eye-catching special finish of olive green ‘Safari' cameras from Leica have a long and storied tradition, dating back to the early years of the M-System.

The Leica M10-P Edition ‘Safari' camera body will be limited to 1,500 units worldwide and includes a carrying strap and SD/credit card holder in Brandy-colored leather. Availability will begin immediately. The Leica Summicron-M 50mm f/2 Edition ‘Safari' lens marks the very first time in Leica's history that a Leica M-Lens will be offered in the legendary olive green enamel finish. Only 500 of these lenses will be made available, beginning in mid-February.

The first Leica cameras with this high-quality enamel finish in olive green were originally designed and constructed for military use in the field. What began in 1960 with the Leica M1 “Olive” manufactured for the German armed forces went on to become a story of legends in the camera world. While the subsequent olive green M3 and M4 cameras were manufactured exclusively for military use, 1977 saw the appearance of the olive green Leica R3 ‘Safari' camera in response to increasing demand from private customers.

This special edition was followed by a series of popular successors: the M6 TTL ‘Safari' in 2000, the M8.2 ‘Safari' in 2008 and, in 2015, the M-P (Typ 240) ‘Safari'.

The Leica M10-P Edition ‘Safari' camera and the Leica Summicron-M 50mm f/2 Edition ‘Safari' premium lens, both finished in olive green enamel, represent a perfect symbiosis of functionality, legacy, and design. All visible metallic components of the camera and lens are elaborately machined from solid brass. The premium baked enamel finish in olive green makes the camera and lens resistant to handling blemishes and scratches and provides enduring protection against external influences such as chemicals and UV light.

The M10-P Edition ‘Safari' looks fantastic with the Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH in silver attached.

Pricing and Availability

The Leica M10-P Edition “Safari” is priced at $8,450 and is available immediately. The  Leica Summicron-M 50mm f/2 Edition “Safari” comes in at $2,750 with deliveries expected to begin mid-February. You can order by clicking the relevant link below, emailing  [email protected] , or calling 305-921-4433.

It seems strange to me to only make one lens for every three bodies, meaning many/most owners will not be able to get the “set”.

Leica "Safari Edition" M-P Announced

leica m safari

Exclusive scoop! Today Leica Camera has announced a "Safari Edition" of the Leica M-P (Type 240) camera. The set includes the Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH, a new strap and a leather SD card holder. There will only be 1,500 sets worldwide and will sell for $9,990k USD (9,900 €) - you can pre-order here! This Safari Edition is actually a good deal - offering over $1,000 USD (500 €) in savings compared to purchasing the items separately (the M-P costs $8k and the Summicron costs $3k ). The last cameras to receive this treatment were the Leica MP and X2 Olive LE for the opening of the Kyoto store a year ago in March 2014.

Leica Camera presents the Leica M-P Set ‘SAFARI’. This set comprises of the Leica M-P (Typ 240) Safari edition, Leica Summicron-M 35mm/f2 ASPH with round metal lens hood, a full grain cowhide carrying strap and matching SD & business card holder. Leica’s safari/olive edition cameras dates back to 1960 with the Leica M1 ‘Olive‘. Made initially for the military, the safari/olive cameras’ unique color stands out. Over the years, a handful of safari/olive editions were produced. Many of these limited edition cameras are highly prized collectibles. The Leica M-P Set ‘SAFARI’ has an olive lacquered top cover, leatherette and bottom plate. The shutter speed dial, the On/Off switch, the release button, the hot shoe and some other details have a silver finish. The engraving on the top cover is reminiscent of the first safari camera in 1960 and has the classic Leica logo inscribed on one line and the wording ‘WETZLAR GERMANY’ on the second line. The 35mm /f2 ASPH has a silver chrome finish with a matching classic round metal lens hood. This set comes in a new packaging including a presentation box. There are 1500 sets available worldwide. The technical data of the camera and lens are identical to the serial versions.

LEICA M10-P EDITION ‘SAFARI’ Camera

leica m safari

Whilst we’re not going to lie, we’d be a little bit reticent to spend nearly $9k on a camera here at Coolector HQ, if we  were  to do so, it would almost certainly be on this fantastic looking Leica M10-P Edition ‘Safari’ Camera which is built for adventure and taking some incredible pictures of your travels. This stunning bit of gear from cameras specialists, Leica, is a limited edition offering that won’t be hanging around on the shelves for long so if you like what you see, you’ll need to move fast to secure one.

leica m safari

The  Leica M10-P Edition ‘Safari’ Camera ($8450) certainly isn’t cheap but it is at this price point for a reason and the quality that it boasts really is second to none. It uses the the M10-P camera body and the Leica Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 lens, and is being sold separately in these spectacular ‘Safari’ Editions. The eye-catching special finish of olive green ‘Safari’ cameras from Leica have a long and storied tradition, and they date back to the early years of the M-System so they will have a lot of meaning to Leica aficionados.

First Class Performance

Limited to just 1500 units, the Leica M10-P Edition ‘Safari’ Camera is going to be in high demand and each one comes with a carrying strap and SD/credit card holder in brandy-coloured leather. The Leica Summicron-M 50 mm f/2 Edition ‘Safari’ lens represents the very first time in Leica’s history that a Leica M-Lens will be offered in the legendary olive green finish and is limited to 500 units worldwide, and is being made available from mid-February onwards.

leica m safari

The Leica M10-P Edition ‘Safari’ Camera separates itself from other digital cameras on the market with its almost inaudible mechanical shutter release and omission of the classic red-dot logo to covertly capture candid moments. One of the most discreet cameras on the market (ideal for not disturbing wildlife on safaris), this fantastic piece of equipment from Leica embodies the essence of the M philosophy and raises the traditional subtlety of the M series to an unprecedented level.

leica m safari

A stand out feature of this stunning camera is the newly designed shutter, which serves the purpose of making the M10-P the quietest of all digital and analog M cameras ever made. Moments requiring utmost discretion can be captured unobtrusively with the nearly silent, fast and slim M10-P. The innovative design of the Leica M10-P is elegantly understated, and boasts only subtle Leica lettering on its top plate, and does away with the Leica red dot logo or any branding on the front of the camera.

Brilliant Features

As you would expect from a Leica camera, the quality is unparalleled from top to bottom with the  M10-P Edition ‘Safari’ Camera and some of the stand out features it has to offer include an ISO setting range extended from 100 to 50,000, an improved viewfinder that lets you see more of what you’re photographing and the latest-generation Leica Maestro-II image processor of the Leica M10-P which reflects the state-of-the-art of advanced processor technology.

leica m safari

In addition to the above, you’ll also find this camera offers Focus Peaking which makes getting great shots easier by automatically marking sharply focused edges as coloured lines and the Live View offers the capacity to magnify the subject on the monitor screen. In the Leica M10-P, the visibility of these contrasting lines has been enhanced against the previous generation and now lets even more convenient focusing assessment to make sure images have outstanding sharpness and clarity.

Leica M10-P Safari Edition

Holy Cow!! Between the fairly new Leica M10-P ‘Safari’ and the simultaneously released Leica Summicron-M 50 f/2 matching premium lens, (mostly sold out), this camera and lens is actually now selling for more than when released! What is this? Apple stock? I understand Leica is generally considered a good “investment”, and they tend to hold their value and lose less value after bought. But increase in value while still in the box?

Leica M10-P Safari Edition

Collectible on Release?

Oh, well. Maybe that they are only releasing 1500 worldwide makes it a sort of collectible. However,…it is a “digital” camera. So, I guess we have now entered the world of collecting digital cameras. So, keep that Nikon D1 safely stored. A 2.75MP sensor will probably be a curiosity bound for museums sooner or later.

Leica M10-P Safari Edition

Safari Summicron-M 50 f/2

Sold out! Good luck finding one. Although I’m not sure why you would put an olive colored lens on a regular ol’ Leica M10-P . It makes more sense as a package deal. Even the body is escalating in price as we speak. Amazing for any digital technology. It usually plunges,…and quite quickly. But in this case, whether you buy one from the Leica Store or KEH Camera , prices are becoming stratospheric. Like hitting the jackpot while trading pork bellies.

Leica M10-P Safari Edition

The first Leica cameras with this high-quality enamel finish in olive green were originally designed and constructed for military use in the field. What began in 1960 with the Leica M1 “Olive” manufactured for the German armed forces went on to become a story of legends in the camera world. While the subsequent olive green M3 and M4 cameras were manufactured exclusively for military use, 1977 saw the appearance of the olive green Leica R3 ‘Safari’ camera in response to increasing demand from private customers.

Leica M10-P Safari Edition

This special edition was followed by a series of popular successors: the M6 TTL ‘Safari’ in 2000, the M8.2 ‘Safari’ in 2008 and, in 2015, the M-P (Typ 240) ‘Safari’. The Leica M10-P Edition ‘Safari’ camera and the Leica Summicron-M 50 f/2 Edition ‘Safari’ premium lens, both finished in olive green enamel, represent a perfect symbiosis of functionality, legacy, and design. All visible metallic components of the camera and lens are elaborately machined from solid brass. The premium baked enamel finish in olive green makes the camera and lens resistant to handling blemishes and scratches and provides enduring protection against external influences such as chemicals and UV light.

Limited to 1,500 Cameras

Finished in olive green enamel, the Leica M10-P Safari Edition digital rangefinder camera will be limited to 1,500 units worldwide. The Leica 50mm f/2 Summicron-M Safari Edition lens will be limited to 500 units worldwide.

Well, that’s not for me to say. I would guess most professionals would just opt for a regular old Leica, film or digital. While I suspect most consumers of this camera would be ‘collectors’,….it is a ‘perfectly usable’ camera. Of course, that’s like saying a Rolex is a ‘perfectly usable’ watch. Yes,…it is.

StreetShootr’s Take

This is a tough one. On the one hand I can’t imagine why anyone in their right mind would want a green camera. A GREEN CAMERA?! But then I look at this thing and it’s so damn pretty. I shoot with a Leica M 240 and I don’t feel the need to upgrade. But if was in the market for an M-P, I might not be able to resist the Leica M-P Safari set… It’s green!

  • Included in the box

For the very first time in Leica's history, a Leica M-Lens will be offered in the legendary olive green paint finish. To be produced in a planned quantity of only 500 units, the Leica Summicron-M 50 f/2 – one of Leica's most quintessential 50 mm lenses – will sport the iconic olive green for a perfect match with the Leica M10-P Edition "Safari" and all its military-inspired forebears to become the Leica Summicron-M 50 f/2 Edition "Safari". The engravings for the distance scale measured in feet and the focal length are highlighted in red paint and stand in deep contrast to the bright white engravings on the lens, all of which are carefully applied by hand. The technical specifications and optical performance of the Summicron-M 50 f/2 Edition "Safari" match the popular serial production model. As the Leica M-System is known for its incredibly vast lens compatibility with old and new models, this new special edition lens can be used with all previously produced M-Cameras since 1954 – standard and special edition alike – for a perfectly matched look or a starkly contrasted aesthetic statement.

Today i finally received my 3th safari lens ordered, a 28mm Summicron. Because of the shut-down of the Leica factory due to Corona, the production of the safari lenses was delayed this year. But now i have my collection completed, a Leica M10-P safari, with the 3 safari lenses, a 28mm, 50 mm and a 90 mm summicron in safari-look.

What a beautiful family - you must be a very proud parent. I keep looking at the body - I'm just a little short at the moment - in time, in time.

Could live with that set ¨for ever¨! Just envious!  😉

Love this. Nicely done. Leica should offer the 4 piece set in some shape or form.

I love the Safari green M cameras!

:)

That said; I have thought about getting some of the Safari green lenses as they are not that much more expensive than the silver ones. But decided against it.

It does not match well to my current M-camera, and even if I in the future would really like to get a new Safari camera (perhaps M10R Safari; Leica, please?) I have come to the conclusion to not get any green lenses. Looking at it several times it is very clear for me that the silver lenses looks absolutely the best on the Safari greens bodies. I prefer that combination (Silver lenses on Green body) way better than the above one combination (Green lenses on Green body).

This is just like I prefer the Cognac leader strap that you use, over the Safari green colour strap (on Safari green body) that I have seen other use (Green body, green lenses, and green strap; awful IMO; total colour match does not automatically guarantee the best look).

This feature attracted me almost more than the Safari paint.  😁

Leica M10-P 'Safari Edition' camera, body and lens

Leica as excellence.

For many photographers, Leica is synonymous with excellence. Some swear that the beloved Leica rangefinder transforms their photography experience. The camera is simple not only in design but in functionality. Without any of the bells and whistles common to high-end cameras today, the rangefinder forces the user to fully absorb a scene, anticipate its evolution and adjust the controls manually before taking a shot. The Leica M10-P Safari offers an old-school, classic feeling when shooting. Beyond that, any  Leica is considered to reign supreme for its attention to detail during manufacturing, and in its superior lenses.

Worth Reading

The safari edition.

In 1957, Leica released their first olive green M - an M3 . It was designed and constructed for use in the field and soon garnered a worldwide reputation as a robust and reliable companion even under most extreme of conditions. Since then, olive green editions from popular cameras and sport optics in Leica 's range belong amongst the most coveted releases for collectors and enthusiasts.

The M10-P Safari Edition is the newest addition to this range and limited to 1,500 pieces worldwide. It contains the same performance and technical capabilities as the standard production Leica M10-P , the brand’s full-frame digital rangefinder camera. The M10-P has a 24 megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor, an ISO range of 100 to 50,000, and connectivity to digital devices via Leica’s FOTOS app. It takes 15 combined hours to create and assemble the 1,000 components of a single M camera, including ensuring that the mechanical shutter actuates quickly and quietly.

The matching Summicron lens

In this case, it is paired with the Summicron-M 50mm f/2 Safari Edition , the first Leica M lens to be given the coveted olive green paint finish. Produced in a limited quantity of 500 units, it was initially offered to customers separately from the camera. It is further distinguished by its distance scale and focal length engravings, which are precisely engraved and carefully hand-filled in red paint, in contrast to the other bright white engravings on the lens. The lens, which is fully mechanical and completely void of any electronics, requires an average of 20 hours of work, made by combining cutting-edge manufacturing techniques with traditional handmade expertise.

Every bit of visible metal components of the body and lens are crafted from solid brass. The enamel finish in olive green makes the camera and lens resistant to finger marks and scratches, providing enduring protection against external elements. It makes holding and photographing with the Leica M10-P Safari Edition an absolute pleasure.

This Leica M10-P Safari Edition  is in very good condition, having barely been used. Both the body and lens are complete, accompanied by their original box, papers and other materials.

Pre-Order the Leica M-P 240 “Safari” Edition

Leica is at it again and this time they have created a special edition Leica M-P Type 240 giving it the Safari treatment! I remember the M8.2 Safari Edition  and today we have the latest and greatest M in the famous Olive color. This one comes with a 35 Summicron lens with round hood, a genuine leather strap and even a leather SD card holder. This is a limited run and will set you back a cool $10,000 or $1000 LESS than a standard M 240 and 35 cron, and you do not even get the extras with the standard version. So this is actually a bit of a ‘deal’ for a unique M 240.

Again, Normal price of a Leica M-P 240 and 35 cron? $11,000! So for this SE set you are saving $1000 and getting extras such as the strap, wallet for your SD cards and the unique round hood for the 35 Summicron. Not bad as usually these special editions are coming in at $2-$4k MORE than the standard pricing.

From the PopFlash.com website:

Leica Camera presents the Leica M-P Set ‘SAFARI’. This set comprises of the Leica M-P (Typ 240) Safari edition, Leica Summicron-M 35mm/f2 ASPH with round metal lens hood, a full grain cowhide carrying strap and matching SD & business card holder.

Leica’s safari/olive edition cameras date back to 1960 with the Leica M1 ‘Olive‘.

The 35mm/f2 ASPH has a silver chrome finish with a matching classic round metal lens hood. This set comes in a new packaging including a presentation box.

For the record, used M8.2 Safari kits go for anywhere between $7-$9k, and it also sold for $10k when new. So if you buy this, use it for several years you may only lose $1-$2k when and if you ever sell it. Not bad for 5 years of use. That is the lowest depreciation I have seen with any digital camera gear.

You can preorder the new M-P 240 Safari Set at PopFlash.com HERE.

You can also order it though Ken Hansen ( [email protected] ) , The Pro Shop,  or  Leica Store Miami.

There will only be 1500 sets made.

Based on your articles about this kit Steve, I went for this over a Q, or a black or silver for thousands more. I picked up an extra mint condition kit sent directly from Leica. Probably something askew that they fixed but it is exceptional and I love it. Especially since I saved far more than the usual discount. The Leica half case fits snug and perfect. Goes perfectly with my leather Figosa shoulder strap from Italy. I used the red Leica soft button and it’s really quite striking with the green body. I also received an included Thumbs Up and the other kit goodies. I’m not using the Leica strap since it’s too short for my use and figure I’ll keep it and the included leather card wallet in the box to keep them mint. I did install the Giotto glass protection on the sapphire display. I’m on the way to Tuscany to shoot and this combined with my Pentax K5IIs systems will be one fun photobag. I also picked up the Penax K to Leica M mount adapter from Germany. Well made and works like a charm. Now just need to learn how to use my pentax primes, and Voigtlander K mount primes on it. BTW the included 35 Summicron is a thing of beauty. And heavy.

The ‘Safari’ color scheme is an old Leica marketing shtick. Not sure to whom it still appeals to. I imagine that the color was useful for Bundeswehr agents snooping about the Fulda pass in 1960 photographing Russians getting drunk atop their T55s.

I believe plasti Dip comes in olive 😉 haha

No it doesn’t. You’d have to get a can of Humbrol to mix the right colour. I’m trying that now on my (huge, monstrous, lugging around, and all that) obsolete D800E. It seems to come out rather well, although several functions have gone AWOL (most of those I never used anyway), and maybe I should have taken the lens off first. Anyway, the effect (on the camera and the images) will be fascinating.

Can’t wait for all the Haters to lose their minds over this one. Buy something else if you don’t like it….It’s a great deal and a great-looking camera. There have been numerous olive green, green paint, and safari schemes from M3s to R series for decades now…this is old news and not at all overpriced. Note that Voigtlander also makes Bessa cameras in olive green too – better start a letter-writing campaign of disappointment to them also for not making a camera more like the a7 series.

i will opt for black M-P

I’m salivating.

I like the M60 color scheme way more.

The best part is the new M to be expected soon. Will they dare to make a (mass production) M without LCD, but “classic” M3 dimensions? Soooo exiting.

love safari Leica’s. really cool would love to pick one up one day…. almost bought a used safari m8 in japan a few years ago…. regret i didn’t get it

The black ones take better pictures and look better in a coffee shop.

Do the MP 240 have the film function?

Yes, same exact camera in every way 100%. The film settings is just a JPEG feature and they are not very good.

I normally love the look of Leica M’s, but that olive green is kind of nasty looking. I’d rather pay more for black.

Can’t wait until they come out with the Safari edition A7RII.

wow que lastima que Leica on este en par con Sony porlomenos en cuestion de tecnologia .Pagas mucho mas y recibes menos, aunque la verdad creo que a cualquiera le gustaria poder tener una!!

I still have the Olive edition of the M8.2 and I still love it. Maybe I should buy this one also and start a Safari collection.

I owned (and later sold) the M8.2 Safari kit. It was a thing of beauty.

That is an ugly color IMHO.

Wow, I so want one, just don’t have ten grand handy.

Safari editions have always been cool. I still want the R3 Safari with the olive painted 50 Summicron.

It looks great, but has no additional technical advancements for the extra money. I wish they’d invest the money they seem to have for fluff into meaningful R&D. I love my M’s, but I’m just saying 🙁

To be fair I don’t imagine it costs a whole lot/takes much thought to say ‘Lets do the same basic paint change we’ve done before!’

It’s LESS money, not more. It’s $1000 less and you get the strap, new box, round metal lens hood and wallet. If you bought an M-P 240 and 35 Cron standard it would run $11,000. This is $9990 for the Special Limited Edition run, so yes, less money.

Yikes. I stand corrected! Saw the nice pic & assumed it was more costly. If I didn’t have an M, purchased at a price premium 🙁 I’d buy this edition.

What additional money? Its $1000 cheaper than a regular MP-240 and 35 Cron.

19th Edition of Global Conference on Catalysis, Chemical Engineering & Technology

Victor Mukhin, Speaker at Chemical Engineering Conferences

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.
