Best time to visit namibia.

The best time to visit Namibia depends on what you want to see and do. The dry season (May-September) is considered the best time to explore the Nabim Desert and go on safari as the temperatures are comfortable, vegetation is thin and wildlife congregates around waterholes.

The shoulder months (April and October) may be a better option for a safari without peak season crowds; however, Namibia's national parks and reserves never feel  too  crowded.

While it can be trickier to spot game in the wet season (November-March), you might be lucky to see cute newborns as it coincides with the birthing season.

Culture and customs

Human settlement in Namibia can be traced back to as early as 15000 BC. In the time since, a diverse mix of people and communities have inhabited Namibia, culminating in a unique cultural heritage made of symbolic beliefs, traits, and traditions.

Today, most of the population sits within the larger Aawambo cultural group found mostly in the north of Namibia. Other large cultural groups that make up Namibia are the Nama, Damara, Kavango, and Ovaherero people.

Namibia was colonized by Germany from the late 1800s until 1919. Because of this, Europeans now make up 5 percent of the population. German influences can be seen throughout Namibia by way of cuisine, language, architecture and more. As much as 10 percent of Namibia’s population is made up of people who have migrated from South Africa.

The national language is English, however many Namibians also speak multiple Indigenous languages, such as the Aawambo language.

Eating and drinking

Like many countries, the majority of Namibia’s cuisine stems from the traditional cooking techniques and produce found in the area. In more recent times, immigrating cultures, specifically German and English, have added to the culinary scene. With a large variation of meats to cook with, it’s no surprise that many of the popular dishes feature meat in some way, often accompanied by a strong flavor and paired carbohydrate.

There are plenty of options for non-meat eaters, too. Some must-tries include green asparagus, omboga (dried spinach), Namibian olives, owawa mushrooms, geelrys (rice dish), oshigali (puree beans) and more.

Things to try in Namibia

A staple daily dish to many, mieliepap is a porridge-like meal usually made with cornflour and served with a selection of vegetables or even a meat protein like fish or goat.

A dish cooked in a small iron pot, potjiekos is a stew that typically combines game meat with hearty vegetables like cauliflower, pumpkin, and cabbage.

This dish is of Dutch and Afrikaans origin and serves as a way to store meat. By using a savory rub of flavored spices, salt, and vinegar, then left to air dry, biltong is a tasty snack that can last for a long time if cured correctly.

Namibian oysters are known to be meatier and fast-growing than in other areas of the world. They are likely to be prepared differently depending on where you go.

Fat cakes are a very popular snack in Namibia and other parts of the world. Essentially, fat cakes are just deep-fried dough balls that can be made into sweet or savory dishes. So, it's no wonder they're popular!

Geography and environment

Red desert dunes, rugged bushveld, dense woodlands, and plains of gravel make up Namibia's ancient terrain. Home to the monumental Fish River Canyon and sharing the iconic Kalahari Desert with   South Africa   and   Botswana , Namibia has some of the most interesting landscapes in   Africa , if not the world.

With little arable land and a warm climate, Namibia is prone to prolonged periods of drought, making farming difficult. Bordered by Angola, Botswana, South Africa, and   Zambia , Namibia also has a stretch of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean where visitors can see where the desert meets the sea.

Top 10 places to visit in Namibia

1. fish river canyon.

There's more to the Fish River Canyon than its sheer size. With remote hiking trails, magnificent view points and raging river torrents during the rainy season, visitors will be breathless at the epic views and sense of isolation when visiting this canyon, believed to have been formed more than 500 million years ago.

5. Ship to shore

Namibia's Skeleton Coast has been called 'The Land God Made in Anger' by the San Bushmen and 'The Gates of Hell' by the Portuguese, and it's not hard to see why. With gale-force winds battering the shore, rolling surf, and thick fog, the Skeleton Coast has ruined many a mariner over the years. Evidence of this is scattered along the coastal sands, with a collection of rusting ships resting on the beaches - an eerie yet enthralling sight.

See the Skeleton Coast for yourself on a 17 day Premium Botswana & Namibia adventure.

6. Etosha National Park

Etosha National Park might be one of the best places to see some of Africa’s iconic wildlife. With its artificial watering holes and wide clear spaces, it’s likely you’ll grab some stellar snaps of the hard-to-miss inhabitants, including elephants, zebras, and even black rhinos.

Sip a drink or two and watch for Africa’s mighty animals from your feature stay on the Zambezi River on our 17 day Premium Botswana & Namibia tour or 7 day Premium Botswana trip .

8. Walvis Bay

Bird lovers should consider a stop at Walvis Bay, which is typically a stop on the way to nearby Swakopmund. Thousands of migratory birds, including the fan-favorite flamingos and portly-pouched pelicans are seen across the lagoons and bird sanctuaries.

Get out your binoculars and get ready to tick off some bird sightings as you visit Walvis Bay on our 10 day Premium Namibia adventure .

9. Swakopmund

If, while in Africa, you have a hankering for German architecture, stop by the spookily named Skeleton Coast for a visit to the town of Swakopmund. Wander through the mix of Namibian and German influences of this seaside stop, enjoying the open-air market and fresh sea breeze. You could also find yourself on a dolphin and seal boating adventure to nearby Cape Cross or out on a local fishing excursion.

Swakopmund is a destination fit for any African itinerary. That’s why you can find it on all our Namibia tours, including our 13 day Namibia Discovery tour , our 22 Amazing Southern Africa adventure , and our 63 day Africa Encompassed Southbound tours .

10. Orange River

Named the Orange River for its unique hue, this waterway has been an important part of Namibian and South African history – namely, the diamond rush in the 1800s. While diamond mining is a continuing business in the region, many people simply come to enjoy paddling the waters.

Enjoy a day on the water at Orange River while on a 13 day Namibia Discovery tour .

What’s travel without a meaningful souvenir or two? When in Namibia, Intrepid encourages travelers to support local makers who put time and effort into handmaking their wares. Culturally significant items are often available for purchase, especially in tourist areas. Speaking to the local sellers can be a great way to learn about their culture and understand the significance of what they are selling.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country.

Things to buy in Namibia

Many of the beautiful textiles sold around Namibia can be used in a multitude of ways, e.g., for clothing, tableware, art, and more. Look to buy from traditional artists and makers in craft markets to support local talent and local industries.

Wooden crafts

A hand-carved wooden object is a great memento to take home from Namibia. There’s likely a souvenir for everyone with crockery, bowls, animal figures, dolls, instruments, and more. You’ll see traditional African masks for sale, which are often items that have a symbolic meaning to the local people.

Precious gems

As one of the largest producers of diamonds in the world, you’re likely to find a sparkly item or two in Namibia. Be sure to do some research or ask your guide about where to go, as not all shops will have the real deal.

Namibia Safari Tours & Holidays

A safari in Namibia is as much about the wildlife as the country’s scenic beauty. In Etosha National Park it has one of the most storied wildlife reserves on the continent, but there’s so much more to experience here. The national parks of the Zambezi Region (formerly Caprivi Strip) are only now getting the attention they deserve, while the dune-scapes of the Skeleton Coast and its hinterland are simply extraordinary. And these are just starting points for exploring a country rich in experiences and safari possibilities.

8 Questions About Namibia Safaris

Anthony Ham

Answered by

namibia travel packages

When is the best time to visit Namibia?

“If I had to choose one month for a Namibia tour, it would be June (followed by May). Although June temperatures can plummet overnight, you get the best of both worlds: high-season prices have yet to kick in, but the weather is ideal for outdoor exploration. As long as you don’t mind high-season prices and higher numbers of visitors with whom to share the wilderness, July through to October is also excellent with generally dry, clear weather and good visibility. By October, temperatures are starting to rise towards uncomfortable levels. The rains are less of an issue in Namibia than they are elsewhere in southern Africa, but rain does occur, especially from December through to March or April. At this time, birdlife is abundant. However, some off-road trails may become difficult to navigate and wildlife tends to disperse and be harder to find (because of the additional water sources scattered around).”

What are the major attractions in Namibia?

“Wildlife is a major draw for visitors on Namibia safaris. Etosha National Park , in particular, is one of Africa’s most celebrated safari destinations – and rightly so. Its combination of hallucinatory salt pans and large wildlife populations (including lions, elephants and plains animals in abundance) give it a distinction found in few other parks. Less commonly visited, but for many travelers equally rewarding, are Damaraland and the reserves of the Zambezi Region, such as Bwabwata and Nkasa Rupara (Mamili) National Parks. Landscapes are another highlight. From the Waterberg Plateau and Namib-Naukluft National Park to Kaokoland and Fish River Canyon (Africa’s answer to the Grand Canyon), stark beauty takes on many forms here. Namibia has long been a popular destination for self-drive safaris, but a Namibia safari is now just as likely to be characterized by luxury lodges, both exclusive and remote, that bring class and comfort to the whole experience.”

How much does a Namibia safari cost?

“It is possible to do a Namibia safari on the cheap, by renting a 4WD and heading out into the wild. While vehicle rental costs are generally high, and fuel is never cheap, your vehicle will also be your home, and camping and national park fees are not as expensive as in some other countries. As a minimum, expect to pay US$175 per person per day. If you’re looking for higher comfort levels and for someone else to take care of the arrangements, Namibia safari prices also reach for the high end rather well. Although there are degrees of comfort and cost, the price of a Namibia safari package can go as high as US$1,075 per person per day.”

What is the wildlife viewing like in Namibia?

“The best places to see wildlife on a Namibia safari are in the country’s north. Etosha National Park is especially good for lions and elephants, but you’ll also see giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and all manner of antelope species. After dark, black rhinos gather at waterholes, including those alongside some of the main camping areas, and it was here that the BBC first filmed this unusual behavior. African wild dogs are a possibility in the northeast, while sable, sitatunga and red lechwe antelope are highlights in Bwabwata National Park. In the northwest, Damaraland and Kaokoland are famed for desert-adapted lions and elephants, and brown hyenas can be seen scavenging around seal colonies on the coast. Farther south, wildlife is scarcer and the main reason to visit is the scenery.”

How safe is Namibia for tourists?

“Namibia is generally safe and politically stable. You’re unlikely to experience any problems in safari areas, such as parks, reserves and wilderness areas. Although most Namibian cities are considered safe and very few travelers run into trouble, you should be careful in larger cities, especially Windhoek, where petty crime is a growing problem. Road conditions are generally excellent along the main road network, although off-road conditions can prove difficult, from the deep sands of Namib-Naukluft and Khaudum National Parks to the axle-breaking rocks of Damaraland and Kaokoland. If self-driving in these areas, make sure you are prepared. The only risk of malaria is in the extreme north, along the border with Angola and in the Zambezi Region.”

How do I select a reliable Namibian tour operator?

“Your first stop when planning a Namibia holiday should be SafariBookings.com, where you can see the widest range of safari options in one place. The insights that you’ll get from expert reviews of the parks and from travelers’ experiences with operators offering Namibia tours could prove invaluable. Beyond that, talk at length to any company you are considering for your travel plans. No question should go unanswered. A visit to Namibia can be expensive and you want to be well informed about what you’re paying for. Safaris are a dream trip for so many, and avoiding a nasty surprise or preventable disappointment while on the adventure of a lifetime should be more than enough motivation to ask questions of the company you book with. Make sure that you spell out your expectations of your Namibia safari. Is it wildlife or the landscapes that you most want to see? What wildlife is on your bucket list? What’s your daily itinerary? How many hours can you expect to spend in the car each day? If a company is unwilling or reluctant to answer these questions, you should look elsewhere.”

What type of accommodation can I expect?

“If you’re self-driving, as so many visitors to Namibia do, you’ll likely sleep in a tent: either on the ground or on the roof of the vehicle. Camping areas in Namibia are often crowded, especially in popular wildlife areas such as Etosha National Park, but they’re also fenced, unlike in neighboring Botswana. Most have facilities that include showers, toilets and sometimes even restaurants, kiosks and swimming pools. Elsewhere, Namibia has a full complement of lodges and hotels, usually on the fringes of wilderness areas. These span the complete range of costs and comfort levels. Inside the parks, reserves and remote areas, luxury lodges and tented camps, usually designed to blend into their surroundings, dominate. They often have just 8 to 10 tents, ensuring an exclusive experience at all times. Tents are large, with comfortable beds, writing desks, private bathrooms and private decks or terraces. The night noises of Africa and cooling evening breezes make the safari tent one of my favorite places to sleep anywhere on earth.”

What can I expect from a safari in Namibia?

“If your Namibia tour is all about wildlife, expect a similar experience in Namibia as you would elsewhere in Africa. This means a pre-dawn wake-up call, safari drives in the very early morning and again in the late afternoon, and perhaps even a night drive. On these drives, you’ll be accompanied by a guide, a driver and sometimes a local tracker perched on a seat on the hood of the vehicle looking for animal spoor (marks or substances left behind as animals move through their environment). You can also expect a full breakfast after you return from the morning’s drive, plus lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, with plenty of relaxation time in between. If your visit is more about exploring wild landscapes, your focus may be different, but the daily rhythms (formed in part to avoid being out during the hottest times of the day) are likely to be similar.”

Top Points of Interest in Namibia

Exoticca’s Namibia vacation packages offer the ideal blend of  scheduled tours and free exploration . Take advantage of the free time in your itinerary to explore the diverse culture and rich history of the “land of the brave”. Namibia certainly has enough to offer that you’ll be sharing stories for years to come.

Etosha National Park

With Namibia safari tours, Etosha National park should be on everyone’s bucket list. It is among the top destinations for spotting abundant wildlife , namely elephants and rhinos.

Bird watchers are in for a treat at Namutoni Spring, where you can spot an array of rare and vibrant avian species . Some to look out for include the crimson-breasted shrieks and violet-eared waxbills.

Spot the Big Four (elephants, rhinos, lions, and leopards) at the Moringa and Okaukuejo waterholes. You may also glimpse various kudu, giraffe and gemsbok species.

Did you know that the animals have a vibrant nightlife too? Take a night Namibian safari tour during the warmer seasons to see a fantastic display at the watering holes.

Interact with the Hai|| Om San hunter-gatherer tribe to learn about the rich culture and biodiversity of the Etosha region . As inhabitants of the land that date back thousands of years, they’ll share their knowledge about the park’s history, geography, and animals.

Skeleton Coast and Cape Cross

The Skeleton Coast may seem intimidating with its unwelcoming weather and the shipwrecks and animal skeletons seen across the landscape, but don’t let it fool you. This picturesque land has a rich history and breathtaking views .

Enjoy a scenic flight over the area to fully appreciate the majestic view of the Namib desert meeting the Atlantic Ocean . On a clear day, you’ll also see the remains of shipwrecks over the years because of the rough waters and sharp rocks.

Be sure to pay a visit to Cape Cross, home to over 200,000 Cape fur seals . Bring extra clothing with, though as it’s possibly one of the smelliest places in all of Namibia. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

The Save the Rhino Trust, located outside the Skeleton Coast Park, protects the last remaining free-roaming black rhinos in Namibia . Stop by the Trust’s Ugab Base Camp near the Brandberg mountain to spot these endangered animals.

For the ultimate in Namibian adventure tours, a hike along the Ugab and Huab Riverbed terrain is not to be missed. This exquisite area is known for its ancient rock art and other historical findings .

Now a ghost town of German architecture, Kolmanskop is famed for the buildings being overtaken by sand dunes . What was once a bustling mining settlement is now a deserted town and popular tourist attraction and inspiration for budding photographers.

A preferred stop on many of the best Namibia tours, Swakopmund steals the hearts of anyone who visits the town. The beautiful coastal town caters to every traveler’s desire —adventure, history, culture, nature, or a tranquil getaway.

The coastal town was the hub of German colonialism in Namibia , increasing traffic between the two countries. As with many locations across the country, the name given by local inhabitants describes what the town is known for. In this case, Swakopmund is at the mouth (“mund”) of the Swakop River.

The weather is typically harsh in this area, but often becomes more pleasant during the day. A cold and misty morning could end with a glorious sunset cocktail at the beachside restaurant, Tiger Reef or a Jetty stroll. Temperatures change drastically, so always be prepared .

Swakopmund welcomes approximately 200,000 visitors each year , meeting every desire. Experience a thrilling adventure by skydiving over the desert or a quad bike or camel-back tour of the dunes.

Immerse yourself in the rich local history and culture at the Mole Museum and informal settlement tours. Enjoy the German cuisine and other local dishes at the oldest pub in town, Kücki’s Pub and Grill.

Namib Desert

Famed as the oldest desert in the world , the name “Namib” translates to “vast place”—an aptly assigned name. The dramatically beautiful landscape of this coastal desert is an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We recommend Namibian escorted tours in this area as it's challenging to navigate and easy to get lost. This “vast place” encompasses Namibia’s entire coastline, with the largest dune reaching as high as 1,256ft (383m) .

This unique desert is home to more endemic wildlife than any other location worldwide . Through living desert Namibia group tours, you’ll discover and learn all about species like the dune lark, Herero chat, Namib day gecko, Grant’s golden mole and many more.

Enjoy Namibia tours through the Namib-Naukluft National Park, namely Sossusvlei, the most famous attraction in the country . Marshes and pools formed among the dunes formed the area. The area is dry most of the time with only cracked clay and acacia trees left behind—known as Deadvlei, a popular shooting location for movies.

For dune boarding and climbing adventures, head over to Dune 45. It’s a relatively small dune, ideal for those who aren’t up for the fitness challenge, but provides breathtaking views of the Tsauchab corridor from the top .

Hidden Gems of Namibia

When you book a vacation with Exoticca, it doesn’t mean that adventure tours in Namibia are your only option. Knowledgeable locals carefully curated our itineraries to give you the freedom to enjoy Namibia tours off the beaten path .

Namibia truly has some of the best sites for a once-in-a-lifetime experience . A perfect example is the Hoba Meteorite located outside of the Etosha National Park. It’s the largest known meteorite on Earth that was too large to move, despite many efforts.

While at the coast, visit the “moon landscape oasis” Goanikontes. What used to be a settlement suitable for cattle breeders , is now a popular spot for locals to visit for the day. As you head back to town, take a moment to stop and enjoy the exquisite views of the landscape.

Exoticca takes extra care to tick all the boxes so you can enjoy every second of your Namibian tour without the hassle. Escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and enjoy an immersive trip that’ll leave you with stories to share for years to come.

Namibia vacation packages

A vast southern African country, characterized by its diverse landscapes of deserts, savannahs and rugged coastline, Namibia is the perfect destination for getting in touch with your wild side. Bordered by South Africa, Angola and Botswana and separated from neighbouring Zimbabwe by the huge Zambezi River, Namibia is often hailed as the perfect destination choice for first-time travellers to Africa as it encompasses a huge array of attractions that epitomize the dream of the African safari and the untouched, wild landscapes that this continent is known for.

With wildlife, wilderness and the unique culture of the indigenous communities such as the Himba and San peoples, a Namibia vacation package will open your eyes and heart to the heart of Africa.

The capital, Windhoek , in the center of the country, is the starting point for most explorations into the country’s natural wonders, whilst Swakopmund , on the Atlantic ocean coast, offers visitors on a tour of Namibia a fascinating insight into the country’s colonial past, with cheerful German -style buildings in a charming palette of colors.

On the other hand, Etosha National Park and Damaraland are some of the most abundant destinations for wildlife spotting in South Africa , filled with African animals, most notably rhinos and elephants. Open-top safaris, whale-watching in the Atlantic and climbing the red dunes of the Namib Desert ; Namibia travel brings these opportunities within your reach!

History of Namibia

To truly understand and make the most of a Namibia tour, you must first get to know its diverse and eventful history. Indigenous groups such as the Nama , San,  and Damara have inhabited the territory of modern-day Namibia since ancient times. It was not until the 14th-century that the now dominant Bantu people’s arrived in the country, changing the cultural landscape forever.

After annexation by British colonialists during the ‘ scramble for Africa’ in the late 19th-century , parts of Namibia became integrated into the Union of South Africa in 1910 . Already, most of Namibia was under the rule of the German Empire , known as ‘German South-West Africa’ .

This period and its influence are clearly seen in the country’s language and in its colonial architecture, which you’ll notice if you visit Swakopmund during a tour of Namibia . Certain Namibian ethnic groups were targeted by the authorities during the years of German rule. The darks days of this genocide in the early 1900s greatly affected the Herero and Namaqua people and left its mark on the country as a whole. In 1915 , South African forces ended German rule in Namibia and in the aftermath of World War I the territory became fully integrated into South Africa , later suffering the same fate of apartheid from 1948 to the 90s. It was not until 1990 that Namibia gained full independence, after decades of uprisings and guerillas warfare, although Walvis Bay and Penguin Islands did not gain independence until 1994.

Nature in Namibia

Well-known for its sweeping sand dunes, Namibia is home to a vast array of natural wonders and is a must-visit haven for nature photographers. Rivers and wetlands contrast with the grassy plains of the Kalahari , whilst wildlife-rich coastal attractions, such as Walvis Bay , offer visitors the chance to meet seas lion colonies and pods of dolphins.

A Namibia tour package is sure to revolve around the wildlife and natural attractions of the country, and there is a handful of sights which characterize the experience. Fish River Canyon is the largest canyon in Africa and amazes visitors with its rugged landscape of unique and winding rock formations. It’s the perfect place to get out into the wild on a number of challenging hiking trails.

Perhaps the most famous natural sight in the country is Sossusvlei , an other-worldly expanse of towering red sand dunes, as big as mountains, fossilized trees, and atmospheric orange-hued landscapes. The famous fossilized trees have survived centuries without decaying due to the dry climate of the Namib Desert, the oldest in the world. If you have the chance to climb ‘ Big Daddy’ , one of the largest sand dunes, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views and a brilliant sense of achievement!

Wildlife lovers and those who are adamant on sighting some of Africa’s biggest game will be drawn to Etosha National Park during a vacation package to Namibia. Herds of elephants are park’s most characteristic sight and it’s undoubtedly the best place for wildlife spotting in the country. Rhinos, leopards,  and cheetahs can be found here in abundance, particularly around the wet season watering holes where they refresh themselves at dusk and dawn.

Culture in Namibia

Many intrepid travelers choose a tour of Namibia to immerse themselves in the country’s diverse and unique culture. Over the centuries, immigration has resulted in a population composed of numerous different ethnic groups, many with their own traditions and ways of life that invite curiosity and admiration from visitors.

Examples include the nomadic San bushmen and the Himba people, known for their use of otijze , a red paste applied to the women's skin and hair. Many groups continue to live very traditionally, in villages composed of straw huts and participate in rituals and folklore that have withstood the pressures of modernity. Cattle and farming are integral parts of rural life in Namibia.

More than half the population live rurally, and it’s here, in the vast countryside, where you can get to the heart of Namibian culture. Many Namibians follow Christianity , although up to 20% of the population continue to practice their own indigenous beliefs. The official languages are English and German, due to its colonial past, although Oshiwambo is the most widely spoken. Visitors on a vacation in Namibia will notice the strong German influence in the cities; you can even dine and drink in German restaurants and pubs, especially in the capital of Windhoek.

Watch the sunrise over Big Daddy Sand Dune in the Namib Desert, photograph fossilized trees in Sossusvlei , meet the noisy sea lions of Walvis Bay and embark on a wildlife safari in Etosha National Park on an action-packed tour of Namibia. Open up a world of adventure and experience a warm welcome in this beautiful country.

Namibia FAQ's

Namibia, nestled in the Namib Desert, the world's oldest desert (in existence for at least 55 million years), is known for its mesmerizing natural beauty. The country is home to diverse wildlife, including a significant cheetah population and you will admire shifting sand dunes, gravel plains, and rugged mountains that make up this extremely arid ecoregion. Namibia is also renowned for having the highest sand dunes and greatest conservation areas of the world. The stunning scenery and good road infrastructure makes a fantastic destination for tourists craving a unforgettable wildlife safari.

Main highlights include Fish River Canyon Park, the Kalahari Desert Namib-Naukluft National Park . Namibia is also world famous for the highest dunes in the world at Sossusvlei and for the Etosha National Park , one of world's greatest conservation areas. Other destinations include Windhoek , the social, economic, political, and cultural center of the country, and the coastal city of Swakopmund , listed as one of the major attractions with numerous facilities and sightseeing options.

The best time to visit Namibia for a safari is during the dry winter months from June to October. Temperatures are comfortably around 68°F, vegetation is thinner and wildlife congregates around watering holes, where predators hungrily await.

We recommend 7-10 days based on what you want to see and do. We offer flexible vacation packages so you can select your number of nights in each city, desired hotel and activities. We suggest a minimum of 3 nights in larger cities.

By Rental Car: While getting around Namibia's relatively few town centers is possible by bus, and even train in some cases, in order to reach most of the parks, reserves and other places you are most likely to want to visit, you will need to book yourself on a tour or rent a vehicle. The country has a good network of paved arterial roads and generally well-maintained gravel roads in rural areas. Car rental is reasonably priced in Namibia, especially during the off-season (December to April).

The official currency is the Namibian Dollar, replacing the South African Rand. The Rand is still legal tender, since the Namibia Dollar is pegged to the Rand. Euros, British Pounds, US Dollars and other major currencies can be exchanged locally or in advance of departure. Please note Namibian currency is not accepted in South Africa.

Afrikaans is the most widely understood national language, Oshiwambo is the most common language spoken, and English is the sole official language in Namibia, but a fairly low percentage of the population speaks it as a home language. You will also notice that most of the white population speaks either German or Afrikaans.

"With the world's biggest sand dunes, oldest desert, clearest night skies, ancient cultures and more wild animals than people, Namibia is truly extraordinary."

Travel Director

Admire the stark beauty of Sossusvlei's ancient backdrops

The blazing red dunes of Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert is one of the world’s most spellbinding landscapes. We’ll take you on a journey through the world’s oldest desert and climb the soaring Dune 45, to see the striking white clay pans and camel thorn trees set against the red dunes.

See the shimmering expanse of the Etosha Pan

‘Etosha’ means ‘great white place’, and the Etosha Pan certainly lives up to its name. This vast expanse of gleaming white salt covers a quarter of the Etosha National Park and is Africa’s largest salt pan. It’s even visible from space and our Namibia tours will take you up close to this surreal landscape.

Visit the Kalahari Desert

Feel the freedom of the open road as we venture deep into the Kalahari Desert of Namibia. Enjoy a scenic drive through the ancient red dunes, see the historic town of Rehoboth, and wander the famous forest of Quiver Trees, where the traditional San Bushmen of the desert make quivers to this day.

Peer into the depths of Fish River Canyon

Carved over millennia, Fish River Canyon is the largest canyon in Africa. We’ll take you to the edge of this ancient chasm formed by the winding Fish River, the longest river in Namibia. Walk along the famous hiking trail, and see the zebra, klipspringers and wild horses that roam through this giant ravine.

Spot the wildlife at Etosha National Park

Set amidst the vast desert landscapes, Etosha is one of the world’s greatest wildlife sanctuaries. We’ll take you on a Namibia safari tour to gain insight into this diverse ecosystem, discover the secrets of the bush, and see the unique, desert-adapted animals and birdlife that live within Etosha National Park.

Our top 5 things to do in Namibia

We’ll show you all the best things to do in Namibia, from climbing the ancient dunes of Sossusvlei, to seeing Etosha’s wildlife and exploring the depths of Fish River Canyon.

National Museum of Namibia ACRE

Located in the capital Windhoek, the National Museum of Namibia houses extensive collections on Namibian natural history, culture and archaeology. There are two display centres, with the the Owela Museum showcasing natural specimens and the Alte Feste Museum displaying Namibia’s colonial history.

Independence Memorial Museum

Set in Windhoek between two German colonial buildings, the Independence Memorial Museum displays the history of the anti-colonial resistance and the national liberation of Namibia. There are five floors, sharing history from the early resistance leaders of Namibia to the South African Border War and activities of the United Nations.

Owela Museum

The Owela Museum is part of the National Museum of Namibia, and focuses on the natural and cultural history of Namibia. You can find natural specimens, dioramas of village life and cultural artefacts. Owela is named after a traditional game played with pebbles, and you can watch and play with the locals outside the museum.

Best museums in Namibia

Our Namibia travel experiences take you to the country’s fantastic museums, from the history of Namibia’s struggle for independence, to the Owela Museum, where you can play traditional games with locals.

In Namibia, wild game refers to the animals of the bush like ostrich, impala, kudu, eland, oryx, zebra, crocodile, springbok and wildebeest. It’s often cooked on a barbecue (known as a braai in Namibia), and eaten in many ways, from sausages (boerewors) and steaks, to stews (potjiekos) and kebabs (sosatie).

This meat and vegetable stew is traditionally prepared in a three-legged cast iron pot and placed on an open fire for around four hours. Alcohol, such as beer, sherry or wine is added to the stew for extra flavor. The pot descends from the Netherlands, while the ingredients are influenced by South African and German dishes.

Kapana is one of Namibia’s favorite street snacks. It’s made from barbecued and seasoned meat, vegetables and chillies, served with doughy ‘fat cakes’ to soak up the juices. The fat cakes are made from yeast, flour and sunflower oil, and are one of the most delicious foods to try in Namibia.

Best Food in Namibia

Our Namibia holiday packages reveal the delicious cuisine of Namibia, from barbecued game and hearty stews, to warm and doughy fat cakes.

What to pack for Namibia

People packing for a tour

Adaptor plug

Pack your binoculars for wildlife spotting in the Etosha National Park, and for stargazing in some of the clearest and darkest night skies in the world.

A scarf is one of the most useful items to pack for your Namibia trip. It protects you from the sun and keeps the desert sand out of your face.

No Namibian safari can be complete without a visit to Spitzkoppe, the most popular and well-known mountain range in the country. The dramatic peaks are believed to have been formed millions of years ago, with the highest part stretching to approximately 1 784 meters.

Currency Namibia uses the Namibian Dollar (N$) which is linked on a one to one exchange with the South African Rand. The Rand is legal tender in Namibia, however the N$ cannot be used in South Africa. If you are wishing to purchase currency before arriving in Namibia, it is easiest to buy Rand as the Namibian Dollar is seldom available in banks outside of Namibia. It is advised to carry cash on you for park fees, tips, and places that will not accept card payments.

Banking Banks are found in most towns and are generally open from 09h00 to 15h30 on weekdays and 08h30 to 12h00 on Saturdays. Closed on Sundays and public holidays. Most of them offer foreign exchange services – with cash, bank and credit cards as well as travellers’ cheques. You can also obtain cash from many of the ATMs. Several international banks have branches in main city centres. Always advise your bank that you are travelling outside of the country as they might block your purchases if they have not been informed.

Public transport in Namibia is geared towards the needs of the local populace and is confined to main roads between major population centres. Although cheap and reliable, it is of little use to the traveller as most of Namibia’s tourist attractions lie off the beaten track.

There are major airlines that fly into Windhoek and Swakopmund. Other destinations are reachable by car or charter flight.

Namibians drive on the left and all signposts are in English. Seat belts must be worn at all times and talking on a mobile phone while driving is prohibited. The general speed limit is 120km/h on tarred roads outside of towns and 100km/h on gravel roads. In built-up areas, the speed limit is 60km/h. To reach more remote areas, high-clearance 4×4 cars are essential.

Traditional Namibian cuisine is rarely served, the food at restaurants tending to be European in style and is, generally, of a very high standard.

Namibia is very meat-orientated, and many menu options will feature steaks from various animals. However, there is usually a vegetarian and seafood section offered by most camps and restaurants.

According to our Namibia travel advice in 2022, a discretionary ten to fifteen percent tip is typical for restaurant bills, hotels, and taxis. In many places, a service charge is automatically added. It is customary to tip the game guide and lodge staff while on safari.

In the supermarkets, you’ll find pre-wrapped fresh fruit and vegetables (though the more remote the areas you visit, the smaller your choice), and plenty of canned foods, pasta, rice, bread, etc. Most of this is imported from South Africa.

The water in Namibia’s main towns is generally safe to drink, though it may taste a little metallic if it has been piped for miles. Natural sources should usually be purified, though water from underground springs and dry riverbeds seldom causes any problems. However, filtered and bottled water is readily available in most towns and all camps, lodges and hotels.

Partially covered by the Namib Desert, one of the world’s driest deserts, Namibia’s climate is generally very dry and pleasant. It is fine to visit all year round. Namibia only receives a fraction of the rain experienced by countries further east. Between December to March, some days will be humid and rain may follow, often in localised, afternoon thunderstorms. These are more common in the centre and east of the country, and more unusual in the desert.

April and especially May are often lovely months in Namibia. Increasingly dry, with a real freshness in the air, and much greenery in the landscape; at this time the air is clear and largely free from dust.

From June to August Namibia cools down and dries out more; nights can become cold, dropping below freezing in some desert areas. As the landscape dries so the game in the north of the country gravitates more to waterholes, and is more easily seen by visitors. By September and October it warms up again; game-viewing in most areas is at its best, although there’s often a lot of dust around and the vegetation has lost its vibrancy.

November is a highly variable month. Sometimes the hot, dry weather will continue, at other times the sky will fill with clouds and threaten to rain – but if you’re lucky enough to witness the first rains of the season, you’ll never forget the drama.

Namibians have a somewhat relaxed attitude to dress codes. A jacket and tie are very unusual. In fact, long trousers and a shirt with buttons are often quite adequate for a formal occasion or work wear. A pair of sensible shoes, jeans and a t-shirt is recommended.

During the day it is generally hot, so pack lightweight loose-fitting clothes in natural fabrics, such as linen or cotton, that will keep you cool and are easy to wash and dry.

Avoid blue clothing – the tsetse flies are drawn to the colour blue, and their bite can give you African Sleeping Sickness.

Long-sleeved shirts and long trousers will protect you against mosquitoes at night.

Telecom Namibia offers a service called wi-space. You purchase a wi-space voucher that allows you to connect to WiFi wherever you see the wi-space logo (about 40 locations in Namibia).

Alternatively, good WiFi access is available at most holiday accommodation venues across the country (free / paid).

Current is 220/240 volts at 50 cycles per second. A three-point round-pin adapter plug, plug types D and M, should be brought for your electrical appliances. Such adapters are also available at major airports.

If your appliance’s plug doesn’t match the shape of these sockets, you will need a travel plug adapter in order to plug in. Travel plug adapters simply change the shape of your appliance’s plug to match whatever type of socket you need to plug into. Travel plug adapters do not change the voltage, so the electricity coming through the adapter will still be the same 220-240 volts the socket is supplying. If you need to use appliances that are not compatible with 220-240 volt electrical input, you will need a voltage converter.

Your safari to Namibia can be planned for any time of the year as this scenic African country offers ample opportunity for exploration and discovery, depending on the preferred interests and activities. Namibia’s vast expanse is evident in the country’s different climate zones. Coastal regions like the Skeleton Coast and Swakopmund may be cloudy in the morning while deeper inland the Namib Desert experiences less than 1cm of rain annually.

Dry season in Namibia

Namibia safaris is best experienced in the cooler and drier months of May to October. Wildlife and bird viewing are excellent as the animals are easy to spot when they gather around water holes. Daytime temperatures in Namibia during this time are pleasant but remember to pack extra layers for nighttime as it tends to be a lot cooler when the sun goes down.

Summer in Namibia

If you are planning to discover Namibia in the hot summer months between November and April, be prepared for hot and humid temperatures with thunderstorms in the afternoon. This is however also the time when a Namibia wildlife safari can deliver exceptional experiences, especially in a natural wilderness like Etosha National Park. The landscape is transformed into a lush green paradise and the great pans of water attract migrating wetland birds and flamingos. The best of Namibia is further on display in the myriad of newborn animals making an appearance.

One of the Most Rugged and Spectacularly Beautiful Countries in the World

namibia travel packages

On the surface, Namibia appears as a wasteland of desert sands, dry rivers, salt pans, and terrain generally inhospitable to any form of life. Long nicknamed “The Land God Made in Anger” by aboriginal communities, it’s a reputation that might be hard to overcome. But even in the harshest conditions of Namibia’s arid landscape, life has found a way to thrive. Desert-adapted elephants, lions, and black rhinoceros are among the wildlife found in this challenging country, isolated by the environment and left free of the persecution its species endures in more populated regions of southern Africa. This wild population makes a Namibia luxury safari an experience that is hard to replicate elsewhere.

Namibia boasts some of the world’s largest natural wonders within its borders. Among them are the etchings at Twyfelfontein, the largest collection of rock art in Africa; Fish River Canyon, the largest  canyon  on the continent; and Namib Naukluft National Park, the largest protected reserve in Africa. Experience this and more with our Namibia vacation packages.

Namibia with Ker & Downey

Seeing Namibia from above is the best way for the whole of its natural beauty to be experienced. Travel by light aircraft to far-flung airstrips and begin the safari of a lifetime on your vacation in Namibia, flying over some of the world’s highest sand dunes—some towering at 10 stories tall—and witnessing the contrast of the pounding Atlantic Ocean surf against a golden expanse of desert sand. On the ground, it is a privilege to get a close look at the wildlife that has specially adapted to living in the desert environment: elephants who can survive as many as four days without water, zebras who have become agile climbers to survive their mountainous home, and ancient plants that are sustained by the moisture in the fog from the Atlantic coast.

The country itself has survived a harsh political climate too, including German Imperial occupation and control by its neighbor, South Africa, before its emergence as an independent nation in 1990. Namibia today still retains its varied histories and cultures, from the colonial towns and streets bearing German names to the tribal communities who still live a nomadic life in isolation as they have for centuries. A Namibia luxury safari reveals some of the most rugged and spectacularly beautiful country in the world—experience it when you plan your own  custom safari to Namibia, crafted by the expert Ker & Downey luxury travel consultants. Namibia holiday package & travel.

Travel to Namibia and discover an exciting and scenic desert destination. Tucked between the Kalahari Desert and the Atlantic Ocean, Namibia lies waiting, the ultimate adventure holiday . A wildlife lover’s paradise, Namibia is home to Etosha National Park, Africa ’s third-largest national park. Home to 114 mammals and 340 bird species this spectacle is not to be missed.

Another must see in Namibia is a visit to the Skeleton Coast National Park. This windswept strip of desert is strikingly beautiful in its own unique desolate and mysterious way. The landscape has shipwrecks and whale skeletons strewn about, and the beaches are often shrouded in fog.

Planning a trip to Namibia? This incredible country borders Botswana and South Africa 's Northern Cape. A visit to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park or the Namaqua National Park will improve any trip to this region.

Travel to Namibia

Encounter the past with a visit to one of the ghost towns of Namibia, where the sand has all but reclaimed the beautiful old buildings. And if you are lucky enough, you might be able to spot some feral Namib Desert Horses as they roam the sparsely vegetated plain of the Namib Desert.

From visiting the highest sand dunes in the world at Sossusvlei, to experiencing out-of-this-world scenery in Damaraland – as well as possibly spotting desert-adapted elephant and rhino – there's so much to experience in Namibia.

Browse our Namibia holiday packages below and start planning all the exciting destinations you’ll visit. A Namibia holiday is the perfect holiday destination choice for adventurous travellers from South Africa .

Things to do in Namibia

  • Sossusvlei:  Explore this unique salt and clay pan encompassed by high red sand dunes. It’s an alien landscape not to be missed.
  • Dune 45:  Namibia's most famous dune. An 80-meter dune that you can walk. You won’t regret the view once you’re up there.
  • Quiver Tree Forest:  A unique attraction in Namibia, the Quiver trees got their name from the Bushmen who traditional used the branches of the tree to make quivers. They are curiously shaped and make for a great photograph.
  • Namibia Cheetah Farm:  Namibia is home to the largest population of cheetahs in the world. Cheetah rescue centres relocate and rescue cheetahs that have been hurt. Visit the farm and even interact with the cheetahs.
  • Skeleton Coast: Littered with shipwrecks and whale bones, the epic coastline makes for an incredible adventure playground. Go quad biking through the desert or take a helicopter to see it from the skies.
  • Etosha National Park: Not to be missed is Namibia’s number one game park. Home to the Big 5 you’ll see everything here, and because of the arid climate you’ll get to see how these animals have adapted to desert life.

Namibia is a land of vast open spaces, offering travellers the opportunity to get away from it all and explore the country's unique landscapes. Here are some tips for making the most of your Namibian adventure:

  • Make sure you have a good map of Namibia before you set out — the country is vast and remote, and it's easy to get lost.
  • It is a dry country, so be sure to pack plenty of water and sunscreen.
  • Namibia is home to some of the world's most dangerous animals, so take precautions when hiking or camping in remote areas.
  • This is a place of extremes, so be prepared for both hot and cold weather.
  • The roads can be rough, so make sure your rental car is in good condition. With these tips in mind, you're sure to have a safe and enjoyable trip to Namibia.

Ultimate Namibia Vacation Package: Safari, Scenery, and Culture

Seeking a once-in-a-lifetime adventure where few have gone before? This Namibia vacation package takes you to incredible natural landscapes, each more breathtaking than the last. Visit Etosha National Park, Damaraland, Sossusvlei, and Wolwedans, plus enjoy a scenic flight over the desert.

This Ultimate Namibia Vacation Package: Safari, Scenery, and Culture trip was designed for a retired couple from California. They had previously traveled with us to Botswana and they wanted to see a completely different side of Africa. When we told them about the incredible desert scenery and off-the-beaten-path adventures in Namibia, they were hooked! This trip showed them all the highlights of Namibia, from sand dunes to Himba culture.

They began their Ultimate Namibia Vacation Package: Safari, Scenery, and Culture trip in the Okonjima Nature Reserve. They visited the AfriCat Foundation to see wildlife like cheetahs, hyenas, and honey badgers and learn about the important conservation work going on at the foundation.

Then they drove to Etosha National Park, Namibia’s top safari destination. They stayed at a fabulous safari lodge and went on game drives to see rare wildlife, including the desert-adapted elephants. In the evening, they watched wildlife coming to drink from the waterhole in front of camp.

Continuing their Ultimate Namibia Vacation Package: Safari, Scenery, and Culture trip, they headed north to Damaraland. They stopped to visit a local Himba village and learn about the daily lives and customs of this ancient nomadic tribe—one of the last surviving traditional cultures in Namibia. After a few nights in Damaraland, they had a spectacular scenic flight over desert, beaches, and shipwrecks to reach the famous red sand dunes of Sossusvlei.

They finished their Ultimate Namibia Vacation Package: Safari, Scenery, and Culture trip in the beautiful Wolwedans Nature Reserve. Finally, they spent a night at a boutique hotel in Windhoek before catching their flight back home the next day.

Their trip was a whirlwind adventure showcasing all the unique highlights of Namibia. They returned home with countless stories to tell—and, of course, stunning photos to share with their friends!

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1 Welcome to Namibia! Arrive into Windhoek, where your guide will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel 10 minutes outside of the city center. The rest of your day is at leisure to relax at your hotel or explore the town. Galton House

Day 2 After breakfast, your guide will collect you for a visit to the AfriCat Foundation, a wonderful highlight with which to begin your trip. This sanctuary is a rehabilitation home for cheetahs and leopards, which you’ll be able to see on a game drive through the concession. Enjoy lunch, followed by an exciting guided afternoon excursion and a visit to the night hide after dinner. Overnight at Okonjima Luxury Bush Camp, where floor-to-ceiling windows allow you to soak up beautiful views of the bush and watch the adorable warthogs (or Pumbas, as they’re often called on safari) outside. Okonjima Luxury Bush Camp

Day 3 Continuing on your safari today, the road takes you north to the border of Etosha National Park, Namibia’s top safari destination. Along the way, you can stop at the famous Otjikoto Lake if you so desire. Depending on your arrival time, you can head inside the park this afternoon for a game drive with your private guide. Your fabulous lodge this evening includes air conditioning (a rarity in Namibia), a pool overlooking an active waterhole, and night game drives in the private Ongava Game Reserve. Ongava Lodge

Day 4 Enjoy a full day on safari in Etosha National Park in a private safari vehicle. You’ll have the chance to see elephants, lions, giraffes, rhinos, wildebeest, zebras, cheetahs, honey badgers, and more. Depart the park before sunset and freshen up before a delicious dinner. The rest of the evening can be spent game viewing at the lodge’s floodlit waterhole, where game comes and goes throughout the night. Ongava Lodge

Day 5 Today after a very early breakfast, you’ll set off with your Namibia guide on a journey to the northern Damaraland area. Along the way, you’ll visit a local Himba settlement. You may have to search for a while as the semi-nomadic Himba people sometimes move location with no notice. Learn about the customs and traditions of this very proud nation—one of the last truly traditional cultures of Namibia—and gain fascinating insight into their daily lives. You may also have the chance to visit a local school.

Then, you will head toward tonight’s destination at Mowani Mountain Camp. Enjoy a picnic lunch en route and arrive at camp in the late afternoon or early evening. After a long but very rewarding day, relax in your luxurious suite and soak up otherworldly views of enormous ochre boulders fading into a purple-tinted horizon. Mowani Mountain Camp

Day 6 After an early breakfast, you’ll be treated to an exciting 4×4 excursion along the ephemeral Aba Huab and Huab River valleys to explore this remarkable region and to search for game, including the elusive desert-adapted elephants. Damaraland is home to a variety of desert-adapted wildlife and hidden desert treasures. Return to camp for a delicious lunch, or opt for a picnic lunch in the shade of a large ana tree by the riverbed, ideally while watching a herd of elephants browsing nearby.

Your guide will also arrange an excursion to nearby Twyfelfontein, home to ancient rock art, the Organ Pipes, and other fascinating rock formations. Mowani Mountain Camp

Day 7 You’re in for a treat today: a scenic flight over the Namib Desert! First, fly from Damaraland to the seaside town of Swakopmund. Then enjoy a scenic flight to Sossusvlei, where you’ll see rolling sand dunes that suddenly drop off into the Atlantic coast, shipwrecks, seal colonies, a diamond beach, and finally the giant, red sand dunes of Namib-Naukluft National Park. Upon arrival at Hoodia Desert Lodge, you’ll be greeted by friendly staff and will have the remainder of the day at your leisure. Hoodia Desert Lodge

Day 8 Rise early today for a visit to the famous Namib-Naukluft National Park—home to the world’s highest sand dunes, which are highlighted beautifully by the early morning light. The park entrance is just a 20 minute drive from camp. Climb the red-hued sand dunes of Sossusvlei and run down the other side to Deadvlei, a striking white clay pan where the remains of ancient trees stand in stark contrast to the surrounding dunes. Once you have explored Sossusvlei, Deadvlei, and surrounding dune fields to your heart’s content, you can return to camp in the afternoon and enjoy a scrumptious lunch. Namibia Safari, Luxury Safari Vacations, Tours & Wildlife Experiences

namibia travel packages

Namibia is the most underrated country when it comes to natural wonders. It has the highs and the lows, the highest sand dunes and the lowest canyon in the world. It has been called the destination of four countries with four contrasting landscapes. It is also the home of exciting Namibia safaris

The capital, Windhoek , is a good place on a Namibia tour to see historical buildings which date back to German colonial rule but at the same time is a modern city.

Another city is Swakopmund which also has German origins and is a quaint desert town with an old-world charm of lush green lawns and palm trees.

Walvis Bay is a resort with excellent facilities for windsurfing and kayaking. It also offers the opportunity to see dolphins, seals and interesting seabirds on a Namibia vacation.

Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert is home to towering sand dunes. With tints of orange and red, they are starkly beautiful and are best seen at sunrise or sunset reached by a four-wheel vehicle.

Etosha National Park has an abundance of wildlife and a jeep safari will bring you close to rare animals such as cheetah and black rhino as well as other types of animals in a Namibia safari.

The lowest and second longest canyon in the world is Fish River Canyon, 160 kilometres/100 miles in length. It has some of the most attractive hiking trails in Africa .

Everyone knows the Kalahari Desert . Namibia is an excellent destination to visit the world’s largest stretch of sand. However, it is not all sand as it has much vegetation including trees and shrubs. Spring brings with it an abundance of colourful flowers. It is also the home of the renowned San Bushmen who dwell in the Bushveld.

A very unusual location open a Namibia vacation is the Skeleton Coast , so named because of the many shipwrecks which litter its beaches.

A Namibia safari will assail the senses and make one realize how wonderful nature can be.

6 Day Sand, Sea & Etosha Budget Camping Safari

It was so so fun trip. Johnny is a excellent tour guide and driver. He is good at cooking and we can eat great BBQ and stew or something like that. He knows about this trip very well. So he gives us a lot of explanation about each place and take us the best place to take pictures. I wanna go again with him. He is so reliable.

Taste of Namibia 7 Days DEPARTING MONDAYS **Sustainable Approach to Travel

My family has just come back from doing a spectacular safari in Namibia. The safari took us through Etosha NP, Swakompund, Sesriem and Sossusvlei hosted by guide Steinner. Planning for the trip was smooth as Anna from admin was only one email/message away. Main highlights of the safari are the elephants in Etosha, Etosha pan shimmering in the sun, biking at Swakompund and the alluring beauty of Namibia. Hotel and lodges were nice and had good food. It was my ideal vacation!!!

Sossusvlei, Swakopmund & Etosha (Camping) - 7 Days

Thanks Tourradar and Discovery tours for the wonderful trip. I had a good time visiting Namibia. My guide and fellow tourist were good, friendly and accommodating. I would recommend both tourradar and discovery tours for Namibian trips. The landscapes and animals were amazing. The itinerary was perfect. I got an upgrade as well. Thanks Fanuel!! Appreciate it. Minor inconveniences were sorted out promptly. The people, the land and animals of Namibia are A+. Cheers Vinay

7 Day Southern Namibia & Sossusvlei Camping Safari Tour

7 Day Southern Namibia & Sossusvlei Camping Safari

As an operator Chameleon Safaris Namibia is excellent. From the start before I even booked the tour they communicated well and answered all my questions and concerns. All the staff were punctual at pickup, very polite and professional. They clearly know everything in order to run a successful tour. Do ask them all the questions you want and raise your concerns with them. I booked this tour because it had all the landscape places I want to go to. I would have loved an accommodated one but the camping exceeded my expectations. It is not luxurious but well organized so it was still enjoyable. The nights were cold but with the tents, blankets and sleeping bag which I rented from Chameleon, it was bearable. The food was great in spite of the limitations of a campsite. We always had enough to eat. Our guide Gideon always make sure we ate first even though often there was not much left for him. He is driver, tour guide, cook, time keeper, friend, photography guide,..... whatever it takes, he can take on the role with his vast knowledge of all the places we visited and his country. On the last night he lead my friend and I in the dark to the correct Quivertree, correct angle to shoot the Milky Way. That in spite of the fact that he is not a photographer. He had the knowledge and experience to know where to go. He stayed on to wait for us but thinking we will take a long time we asked him to go back to his duties at the campsite. After a long day driving it will not be right to keep him up till late with still more chores to be done before he could get some sleep. Please understand that this is not an easy camping itinerary. You can be more comfortable at lodges. But this southern part of Namibia has many beautiful locations to visit and this itinerary includes some of the best. It is definitely worth the effort for me. I am one very happy camper. Come prepared to enjoy this part of beautiful Namibia, the hospitality of the Namibians, and the well-organised and professional tour operator, Chameleon Safaris Namibia. Ask them how you can prepare yourself for the tour of your choice and how you can make the best of your tour. Thank you Gideon, Bronnie and the whole Chameleon team!

5 Days / 4 Nights Namibian Adventure (Camping)

Great experience and was pleasantly surprised how nice the camping accommodations were. Great tour guide (Lucas) who was always looking out for our safety and well-being. We also appreciated Lucas’ flexibility and Discovery tours willingness to accommodate our vegan diet and also making sure what we paid for through Across Africa Tours was met. Appreciated they were upfront and clear on the expectations and what was included and not included in the package. It was nice they ensured we always had enough food.

10 Days Northern Namibia, Damaraland, Coast & Sossusvlei Camping Safari Tour

10 Days Northern Namibia, Damaraland, Coast & Sossusvlei Camping Safari

My 10 Days Northern Namibia, Damaraland, Coast & Sossusvlei Camping Safari was one of my best trips ever, without a doubt. Everything went smoothly, nothing to add. Since the beggining of the trip (and I booked just 10 days before the start of the trip), the manager of the company was very professional and fast to answer all my questions. I never did much camping before, so I was a bit anxious on this part, but all things went so well! Our guide was such a nice guy (and cooked so well...), that these 10 days felt like a few hours. From my picking up the airport, the transport, the food, the camping, such a nice trip overall. Even though there are always unpredictable things, all was solved and I can honestly complement Blue Crane for their professionalism and a great trip! I will miss Namibia. Hopefully I can return again soon.

Cape & Dunes Southbound: Desert Camping & Safari Drives Tour

Cape & Dunes Southbound: Desert Camping & Safari Drives

I had lots of fun on this trip, but it wasn't quite what I was expecting. You spend a lot of time on the lando (just about half of each day). Once you get to the camp it's putting your tent together and unpacking the lando. Then at 7pm it's dark outside. In the mornings (sometimes at 5.30 am) you take your tent back down and load everything back onto the lando. In between we were able to do some short hikes and walks, but there wasn't enough time to really explore the country and see the scenery. You have to stick to a schedule and there is no flexibility. Also a lot of the time, when you didn't book any of the extra activities there was absolutely nothing to do. And the activities were often more expensive than previously announced. The kayak tour on orange river eg is 400 and not 300 Rand. What made this trip great was the people. We were really lucky with our group and all got along really well. The two CEO were also really fun and took great care of us.

Cape & Dunes Northbound: Wildlife & Starry Night Skies Tour

Cape & Dunes Northbound: Wildlife & Starry Night Skies

I had a fantastic time on my tour. Prince and Wellington were brilliant CEO's ensuring we all had a great time. The food was brilliant and Prince always ensured I had gluten free meals and another girl always had a veggie option. Wellington was a brilliant driver and always ensuring the Lando was taken care of and stayed calm when there were any technical issues. Both CEO's were full of useful information, Welly knew lots about animals which was great in Etosha. There was a lot of driving but the CEO's ensured we had regular comfort and photo breaks. At times there was no water at the camp sites but the CEO's tried to get this sorted for us. I really like the Lando and am glad we had this vehicle and not one like other tours such as Intripid. I ended the tour in Windhoek, it may have been useful to have a full day in Windhoek to allow for sightseeing and to give the CEO's time to prepare for the next leg of the trip and sort out any issues - for example Lando problems. I will definatly look to travel with G adventures in Africa again and would be more then happy to have Prince and Welly as my CEO's. I would recommend the tour to people.

What people love about Budget Tours in Namibia

Sehr empfehlenswerte Tour.
More than excellent !! Quick response and very good value for money. Our tour guide Stefanus was excellent and an amazing multitasker. He took great care of us and accommodated all of our needs. Would repeat in a heartbeat!!
Had a great round trip in Namibia. Our guide Shawn was excellent, showing us the sights and telling us a lot about Namibia. Amazing experiences in the desert, and Etosha. Only wish I had more days there! Some misunderstanding with dates from office, but it was sorted out and ended up very well. Super happy with the trip, and can recommend it if you have a limited number of days in Namibia and want to see the sights
