Inside Coco Chanel’s Decadent 31 Rue Cambon Apartment

By Alice Cary

Famed couturier Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel opened her first hat shop at 21 Rue Cambon in the heart of Paris in 1910, moving into larger premises at 31 Rue Cambon eight years later. The 18th-century building has been central to the functioning of the house of Chanel ever since – serving as a personal residence, a boutique, and a couture atelier.

Throughout her lifetime, Chanel displayed her clothing, accessories and signature No 5 scent on the ground floor. One storey up, a large reception area was used for private fittings and to showcase her creations. A mirrored staircase – where she reportedly viewed her own collections from her perch on the fifth step – led to her second-floor apartment, decorated with her signature lavish taste, where she hosted everyone from Salvador Dalí to Elizabeth Taylor.

Though she never slept there (retreating to her suite at the Ritz each night instead), the apartment is brimming with personal touches – and has been preserved almost exactly as it was when Chanel died in 1971. Masses of leather-bound books line the wooden shelves, while Chinese screens featuring her beloved camellia flowers divide the interiors. Another motif that features heavily? Lions, a favourite of the designer, whose star sign was Leo.

Today, the apartment is closed to all except the most prestigious guests (and loyal clients) of the house – although the floor above it remains a working atelier. (Naturally, Chanel has expanded considerably through the years, and now occupies a row of townhouses on Rue Cambon.) Below, a glimpse inside the private space of the famed couturier.

Coco Chanel was photographed by her close friend, Vogue photographer Horst P Horst, on a number of occasions. Here, she reclines on a chaise longue while wearing her signature layered gold jewellery and a black hairbow.

Chanel’s apartment constantly played host to world-renowned artists, including Alberto Giacometti (one of his sculptures takes pride of place at 31 Rue Cambon), Dalí and Pablo Picasso.

Chanel had a famous aversion to doors – relying on elegant lacquered screens instead.

The couturier never slept in her apartment – but instead resided at the Ritz. For 34 years, she walked from the hotel to Rue Cambon and back each day, pre-warning staff of her arrival so they could spritz the rooms with No 5 perfume.

Fittings and couture showcases took place in the apartment. Here, Chanel adjusts her signature bouclĂ© tweed suit – which she is also wearing in the photograph. To this day, many celebrities and royals favour her two-piece skirt suit , which she designed with comfort in mind.

Almost every wall of the apartment is lined with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves filled with elegant tomes.

Many say that Chanel’s apartment was an extension of herself. Today, it is reserved for special press visits and photoshoots, and it remains in practically the same condition as when she died in 1971.

If you want to see the apartment from outside, it is located at 31 Rue Cambon in Paris. The building houses Chanel’s flagship store on the ground floor, while her apartment is on the second floor.

As a designer who once stood for understated elegance, the legacy of Coco Chanel today is iconic of the diminution of ultra-feminine, fussy fashion. Once Chanel’s popularity heightened, the illogical design of constraining heavy skirts, padded bras, and stiff jackets were no more, as her ease and liberated take on women’s clothing grew to be increasingly desirable. As the individual who coined the term “the little black dress” and turned a name into a notable handbag, it is no surprise that Chanel’s legacy continues to live on even today.

Aside from her clothing, accessories, and beauty products, Coco Chanel is also notable for her exclusive private apartment located at 31 Rue Cambon in Paris. The space has been meticulously kept since the revolutionary designer’s death in 1971, representing her aesthetic as not only a designer, but as an individual as well.

The rouge-infused space features the infamous wall of mirrors lining the cream-carpeted staircase, as well as her quilted suede couch that many believe to be reminiscent of her handbags. The apartment if anything represents a vision antithetical to the minimalism of her designs, creating a unique space that is regularly kept and visited today for inspiration by industry icons today, such as Karl Lagerfeld.

Fashion lovers from around the globe can travel to Paris to bear witness to the piece of fashion history forever captured in time. With the Chanel boutique directly below the private apartment, there is much to be seen of this iconic fashion brand that continues to thrive on the minimalism originally promoted by Coco Chanel herself.

One response.

I am considering a return to Paris this fall and am wondering about seeing the Chanel apartment on Rue de Cambon. Are there certain days or times of year that this is possible? Is it a private showing or would more than our docent be with us? Is there a specific cost you can mention? Thank you for your time and help. We are frequent visitors, but have never had this experience. I do speak French, but not as often or as fluently as I wish. Martha Wehrenberg [email protected]

French fashion designer Coco Chanel had a lavishly decorated apartment above her Paris boutique, but it didn't have a bedroom — every night, Chanel retired to her private suite at the Ritz.

Coco Chanel invented a fashion vocabulary — camellias, the black dress, the double-C logo, the elongated octagon shape of the Chanel No. 5 perfume stopper — and she surrounded herself with these inspirations in her posh Paris apartment.

Located at 31 Rue Cambon, the apartment sits atop the Chanel boutique and couture salon, where models showed collections to prospective buyers. Today, the apartment is used for press interviews and fashion shoots — and, of course, for haute couture clients, says Odile Babin, a Chanel archivist.

"In this apartment, you can understand the universe of Mademoiselle Chanel," says Babin — who is wearing a terrific little black, red and white plaid jacket (Chanel, of course).

To enter Chanel's universe, you climb a curved staircase, up steps carpeted in beige, with white trim. When new collections were presented, Chanel watched them being modeled from these stairs. During the show, she would sit perched on the fifth step down from her apartment, in front of a wall of mirrors. Looking down, she could see the models and the audience reaction to the clothes — without anyone seeing her .

Chanel hated doors, and often placed burgundy-colored screens in entryways. "She hoped that by placing [screens] in front of the door, her guests might not remember to leave," archivist Odile Babin explains.

'Invisible Perfection'

Upstairs, Chanel's apartment is like the nest of an exotic bird. It's filled with antique lacquered Chinese screens — camellias are part of the pattern. Chanel flattened the burgundy-colored screens like wallpaper, or folded them at the entryway to her drawing room.

"Mademoiselle Chanel hated doors," Babin explains. "She hoped that by placing them in front of the door, her guests might not remember to leave."

A design genius, a self-promoter, a fabulist (she made things up), and afraid of being alone — Chanel was a complicated character. She was born poor, but a series of rich and powerful lovers paved her way to fame and fortune. Among her liaisons were a Nazi intelligence officer during World War II, and the Duke of Westminster — the richest man in England.

Some of the duke's lavish gifts, such as three cigarette boxes, sit on a table in Chanel's apartment. She smoked quite a lot — those strong, rich, Gitanes cigarettes. The elongated octagon-shaped cigarette boxes are engraved with the duke's coat of arms. The boxes are silver on the outside and gold, the more precious metal, on the inside — a luxury hidden from view.

The idea of "luxury for yourself" was an important Chanel principle, Babin explains. "We call this notion 'invisible perfection.' "

Chanel puts the finishing touches on one of her new designs in 1959.

Chanel's apartment is filled with visible perfections — crystal chandeliers, gleaming mirrors, pairs of gilded Chinese horses, an ancient Russian icon from her friend Igor Stravinsky, a golden hand her friend Alberto Giacometti sculpted for her, and a shaft of wheat painted by her friend Salvador Dali.

It's all very opulent, sophisticated and elegant, and yet the apartment isn't a large or grand space. Though the objects are impressive and luxurious, the apartment feels embracing and intimate. Each room is small, and an important room is missing.

"Mademoiselle Chanel never slept here," Babin explains. There is no bedroom.

Rather, she had a private suite at the Ritz — with all those Ritzy amenities.

Every evening, Chanel left her apartment, walked five minutes across rue Cambon to the Place Vendome, and entered the Ritz through the rear door to retire for the night.

Each morning, she crossed back to No. 31. (She'd phone first, so they could spray the salon with Chanel No. 5.) Then, in a mist of expensive perfume, Coco Chanel got back to work.

Tour Coco Chanel’s Paris Apartment – Come With Me Inside 31 Rue Cambon

Before the renovation of 31 Rue Cambon was complete, I had the privilege of going inside Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s Paris Flat aka. Apartment! In December of 2016, the renovation yet to be complete. The furniture and the walls were completely covered on Christmas Day but the CHANEL boutique was open. This was quite a surprise on top of our beautiful four days that Boyd surprised me with before celebrating Christmas, Boxing Day, and New Years with our moms in Scotland. Little did either of us know that our quaint hotel was in better than the “right neighborhood”.

Visiting Coco Chanel’s 31 Rue Cambon Apartment on Christmas Day

On Christmas Day, while Boyd was packing us to depart to Scotland, I made one of my last stops into CHANEL. Being from America where everything is closed on Christmas Day, I was happy that the boutique was even open. After photographing and overflowing with inspiration with  my favorites of the Coco Cuba collection , the boutique clerk asked if I would like to peek into 31 Rue Cambon!!!!

Foyer Entry to Coco Chanel’s Paris Apartment

When stepping onto the cream marble, I could feel the presence of Coco herself. I could only imagine her gracing these stairs over 80 years ago as she entertained Giacometti, Stravinsky, and Dali. Surrounded by mirrors and black gloss with fine gold accents, every turn of the Parisian staircase is art deco. Mirrors making space feel larger than life exude refined grandeur in all languages even though they speak none. If only the walls of this Paris flat could talk.

Inside Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s Paris Flat

From the signature camelia fleur to the glossy, lacquered black surfaces, to the soft suede upholstery, CHANEL is evident. I can barely begin to imagine what Karl Lagerfeld must do to maintain the house codes of the CHANEL brand but he managed to incorporate everything from lions to wheat to other fine details found in the Mademoiselle’s flat into the CHANEL collections over the years.

The cognac hues and ornate gold accessories and touches of vibrant scarlet red are rich yet timeless. Details only found in the couture collection mimick parts of the Paris flat. The desk has fine scratch marks and pen marks as if Chanel may one day return to finish a sketch or a letter. Tiny details and accouterments are tastefully nestled in every nook and cranny. Attention to details of the light switch plates are beautiful and brass.

Inside Coco Chanel’s Paris Apartment That Continues to Inspire Creativity

By Talib Choudhry

coco chanel's paris apartment on rue cambon

Coco Chanel’s Paris apartment on Rue Cambon is one of fashion's most enduring addresses. Its mirror encased staircase, where the late French couturier debuted many a collections, is arguably – thanks to countless photographs taken on its spiralling steps – contemporary design's first unforgettable fashion x interiors moment; but thanks to Coco's impeccable taste, every corner of this beautiful home in the French capital still remains a source of inspiration.

The designer pictured there in the 1950s.

The designer pictured there in the 1950s.

“We have eight collections and six major shows a year and each one is about storytelling – it’s about how to illustrate the DNA of the brand,” explains Bruno Pavlovsky, president of fashion at Chanel . “Every time, we try to go one step further, but we need to be very loyal to the past, so there is this permanence.”

The staircase at 31 Rue Cambon.

We are sitting on the windswept deck of a leisure boat that has been commandeered by Chanel for the day – one of several venues on a stretch of the Seine that will shortly serve as the backdrop to the Chanel Fall 2023 couture collection. The cobbled walkway that runs along the riverbank has been painted in a palette of pastel hues, creating a fairytale-like atmosphere, with the Eiffel Tower standing proud in the distance. It’s a carefully curated, postcard-worthy scene, completed by a row of artists’ stalls offering archive Chanel images for couture show invitees to take with them as souvenirs.

Since Virginie Viard took on the mantle of creative director at Chanel in 2019, she has focused on capturing the essence of Frenchness, paring down the backdrops of shows and presentations when compared to the decadent high theatrics of Karl Lagerfeld’s era. For the Fall 2023 couture show, a gaggle of insouciantly tousled Parisiennes strolled along the Seine, some holding flowers, others walking dogs, all immaculately outfitted. The watchwords for Viard were “sophistication and simplicity, permanence and beauty”, which she translated into retro-tinged daywear (narrow double-breasted coats, ruffle-edged coat dresses). The immaculate savoir-faire of Chanel’s haute couture ateliers was more readily apparent in the eveningwear section of the en plein air parade, with 3D chiffon and multicoloured sequin flowers blooming on cobble-sweeping gowns.

“Coco Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld were both very loyal to the codes that are part of the anchors of this brand,” adds Pavlovsky. “The game now, for Virginie, is to play with them – to project the brand into the future and, at the same time, be very loyal to this past, which is part of the Chanel signature.”

One Paris address is integral to deciphering this signature. At the top of the mirrored staircase in the Chanel boutique at 31 Rue Cambon, a secret door opens into Coco Chanel’s Paris apartment. “The interior of a home is the natural projection of the soul,” she once said, and the perfectly restored space is full of leather-bound books, antique furniture and precious objets , many of which have been used as inspiration for Chanel collections.

Take, for example, the coromandel screens that are among the first things you see. The designer amassed over 30 of these 17th- and 18th-century Chinese furnishings throughout her life, using them to decorate her homes in Paris, New York and Lausanne, once commenting, “I’m like a snail. I carry my house with me”. The richly lacquered screens inspired a high jewellery collection in 2018, with pieces evoking their floral and animal motifs.

The salon of Gabrielle Chanel’s private apartment.

The pioneering Chanel famously invented many things. She eschewed very strict clothes for women, taking ideas from menswear; tweed was co-opted from the country squire’s wardrobe during her romance with the Duke of Westminster in the 1920s. The soft, carded wool became an essential element of her wardrobe (Chanel prided herself on being able to recognise yarn that had been rinsed in the waters of Scotland’s River Tweed) and she used it to create clothes for similarly dynamic women who travelled, drove and practised sports.

Tweed has, of course, been a perennial favourite at the fashion house ever since, most recently appearing in high jewellery; unveiled in June 2023 in London, the 64-piece Tweed de Chanel collection is an expansion of a 2020 launch. The challenge for Patrice Leguéreau, director of the jewellery creation studio, was how to make metal and precious stones feel as supple as the handwoven Scottish woollen cloth; finessing the techniques took several years. His artisans worked the fine materials into magnified iterations of the fabric, imitating the charmingly irregular weave of tweed, which so delighted Gabrielle Chanel. Diamonds, pearls and sapphires are layered and intertwined on several planes, creating necklaces, rings and bracelets with intricate textured effects.

But how does a brand stay true to the vision of an innovative – but very 20th-century – woman while also offering novel, relevant products? “We are one of the only brands to come from the 1920s and be very consistent in terms of posture, but at the same time, the brand is growing,” says Pavlovsky. “Mademoiselle Chanel was very free to go where she felt that she wanted to go, and that’s exactly what we are trying to do today, but not too much. For example, we are part of the future, but we are not streetwear. There are some clear limits with the brand that we need to respect. It’s about elegance, femininity, Parisiennes.”

This clearly defined, incrementally burnished vision is evidently playing well with customers. On the morning of the show, the Rue Cambon ground-floor boutique and the more exclusive couture floor above are buzzing with clients. “When I talk to some of our customers coming from all over the world, what they like is this French attitude that you feel in our collections,” adds Pavlovsky. “Couture is an emblem of this attitude, so it’s important not to move into some strange areas. Our job is to continue to nourish the legend.”

Couture is, by its very nature, an exclusive exercise that involves the ultimate expression of a fashion house in terms of creativity, materials and service. It’s also an experience that is becoming attractive to more and more customers, but Pavlovsky is far from complacent. “Anyone can live without what we are doing,” he says matter-of-factly. “It’s more about dreams and imagination. We focus on creating something that is always above expectations. It’s an endless process of research and refinement.” chanel.com

Chanel in her apartment

Coco Chanel’s Apartment at 31 rue Cambon

Located on a small street just steps from Place Vendîme sits 31 rue Cambon. This legendary address is the site of Coco Chanel’s beautiful apartment in Paris. In the 1920s, Chanel purchased the entire building at 31 rue Cambon. On the ground floor she opened her first fashion boutique; the first floor houses her couture studio, and the second and final floor houses her apartment. Tours of her apartment are available by special appointment only; celebrities such as Rihanna and Kristen Stewart are among the lucky few who have been afforded a tour. According to those who have been able to see the apartment firsthand, it is beautifully decorated in an ornate and oriental way, contrary to the simple lines of Chanel’s designs. Although tours are closed off from the public, you can still pay a visit to the famous address and visit the retail store located on the ground floor.

By 1927, Chanel owned five properties on rue Cambon, including numbers 23-31. Chanel started her career in design as a milliner (hat maker), selling straw boater hats to the ladies of Paris. Her business soon grew to include clothing, jewelry, and fragrance .

The team of designers, seamstresses, and stylists who are responsible for producing Chanel designs continue to work out of this studio today.

Coco Chanel-Inspired Activities in Paris

From the little black dress to her tweed blazers, Coco Chanel defines luxury. But long before she launched her eponymous label, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s beginnings were anything but glamorous. However, these modest roots contributed to her grit and skill. Although Chanel passed decades ago, her legacy lives on in Paris and beyond. We’re revisiting Chanel’s origins and have rounded up our favorite Chanel-inspired activities in Paris for our fashion-minded travelers.

Coco Chanel’s Upbringing

can you visit coco chanel apartment

Hailing from a town in the Loire Valley, Chanel spent a notable part of her childhood in an orphanage in Aubazine. And here that she’d learn a skill that would change the course of her life: sewing . Before she achieved fame in haute couture, Chanel had a smattering of odd jobs such as selling hats and singing at a cabaret. Chanel earned the nickname “Coco” from her singing gig, per The Guardian , and clearly, it stuck.

Coco Chanel’s Professional Career

can you visit coco chanel apartment

In 1910, she opened her first shop in Paris and later on stores in Biarritz and Deauville, per Vogue . Chanel nixed corsets and instead opted for different fabrics, such as jersey, per the Metropolitan Museum of Art . Jessa Krick writes that Chanel’s designs were “simple, practical, and often inspired by menswear, especially the uniforms prevalent when World War I broke out in 1914.”

And Chanel’s craft prevailed. In 1921 , Coco launched Chanel No. 5, a timeless perfume that still remains a staple more than a century later. In 1926, Vogue labeled her LBD as “The Chanel ‘Ford’ — the frock that all the world will wear.” Chanel’s designs expand far beyond the borders of France. In 1963, on the day of her husband’s assassination, Jackie Kennedy donned her infamous Chanel pink suit .

But Coco’s life wasn’t always magnificent. From her absent father to her questionable affiliations, her story is not without stain. During World War II , Coco was romantically involved with a Nazi officer, per PBS .

Former editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar hits the nail on the head: “Chanel’s aesthetic may be black and white, but her life is filled with shades of grey,” says Justine Picardie in a BBC article . Despite her acquaintances and life choices, Coco Chanel remains a pioneer in the fashion industry and has shaped haute couture as we know it.

If you’re interested in discovering more about the life and legacy of this designer, here are several Chanel-inspired activities in Paris.
