Steven Adler: How Guns N' Roses made Appetite For Destruction

In 1987, the ‘real’ GN’R bottled the mayhem of the Sunset Strip on their classic debut album Appetite For Destruction. Ousted drummer Steven Adler tells all

Guns N' Roses in 1987

“The five of us were brothers,” Steven Adler says of the classic Guns N' Roses line-up. “We lived together. We ate together. We fucked together. And Axl and all his lawyers will never be able to take away what we accomplished at that time in our lives. There are millions of musicians, but to get five in a room that can actually make magic happen, that’s rare. We had that on Appetite For Destruction .”

The drummer believes the legendary debut has aged “like a fine brandy”. True enough. The most dazzling album of its era, Appetite… is the sound of undiluted anarchy: a musical simulation of fighting bikers, fucking strippers and shooting smack that gives a vicarious thrill to armchair hedonists.

It’s an album built on chemistry – both kinds – and with respect to Matt Sorum (who is arguably the better drummer), the gang mentality never truly recovered from Adler’s 1990 dismissal, when his heroin habit left him too weak to nail Civil War for Use Your Illusion II . Now clean, and having published his memoirs – My Appetite For Destruction: Sex & Drugs & Guns N’ Roses , in 2010 – the drummer bears no grudge.

“I have wonderful memories of Appetite… ,” he says. “Because we just knew. Me, Axl, Slash, Duff, Izzy… we all knew where it was gonna take us. We’d go into the booth and listen back, looking at each other, saying: ‘This is gonna be the greatest record ever’. The first time we heard it on the radio, we were like little kids, jumping up and down, screaming, singing along, dancing in a circle.”

The backstory of Appetite… is well-known: the band wrote most of the material in a squalid LA headquarters known as the Garden, and began work with producer Mike Clink at Rumbo Recorders in August 1986. The material was graphic and autobiographical, equal parts sex, drugs, porn and poverty.

“The songs were everything we’d lived though,” says Adler. “They were part of our lives. It was just the five of us, our crazy friends, and all the crazy experiences. You’re living on the streets, you got nothing… Thank God we had strippers! Because strippers make great money, and if you’ve seven or eight of them on your side, that’s a lot of money. They wanted to take care of us rockers…”

Slash has previously described songs like Mr Brownstone as being written “at the height of our chemical bliss”. When it came to recording, Adler insists they lived a dual existence. “We were young guys, and had nothing but parties and pussy on our minds, but when it came to going in that studio, everybody straightened their ass up.

"First we work, then we party. I was a big pot smoker, a little alcohol… but heroin around the band during Appetite ? I’m telling you, none. Well, not with me personally. Our guitar players, they’d fiddle-faddle every once in a while. But we took it seriously. We’d sleep all afternoon, go record, then go out and party.”

All except Axl: “He’d do his parts by himself. Axl’s a lone wolf. He’s like… I don’t want to say Dracula, but he likes his space. Axl’s vocals are what took the longest, because he’s a perfectionist: some of the vocals, he’d record one word at a time. But most of the songs are first or second take. Sweet Child O’ Mine was first take.”

Quite a smooth process, then?

“There was one incident,” recalls Adler. “As a band, we always said we’d never let anyone tell us how to write our music. There was this one part in You’re Crazy … it was originally full-time from beginning to end, but Mike Clink goes: ‘Hey, why don’t you do the verse half-time?’ Thinking that everybody else was gonna jump up and say: ‘Fuck you, don’t tell us what to do!’ I was the only one who jumped up and said it. Everyone else was just looking at me.”

Ask Adler for a favourite song and he reels off the tracklisting. “ Rocket Queen… Nightrain… Welcome To The Jungle… Think About You… Sweet Child O’ Mine … Brownstone ’s a good one. You know what? Every single one. I felt for sure we were gonna have the first album ever that had twelve singles.”

What did you think of Axl recording himself having sex with a groupie/girlfriend of yours (since revealed to be Adriana Smith) on Rocket Queen ?

“Oh, that was just an old girlfriend, a stripper,” Adler laughs. “We had, like, eight or nine strippers who were part of our little clan. She just happened to be one I was making out with at the time. But I didn’t mind that Axl fucked her. Of course not. He was doing it for the band. Fuck away!”

Adler was equally relaxed about royalties, with Axl taking 25 per cent, the other three on 20 per cent, and himself on 15 per cent.

“It was split perfectly,” he maintains. “The lyrics were Axl’s, so I thought it was only proper for him to make a bit more. Without a fight, I offered it: I said, ‘Dude, you take five per cent of mine; I’ll take 15, you take 25’. Lyrics are important. You drive around in your car, you’re singing the lyrics. But of course, I made a lot of money from Appetite… You can’t sell that many records and not make money.”

The bonhomie couldn’t last. “Our relationships didn’t change during Appetite… ,” he says. “Things only started changing after we’d been on the road, and there was so much drugs and alcohol. We didn’t even have to ask for drugs… All we had to do was think it, and it magically appeared. You just think: ‘I want a big line of coke’ and bing! I was very naïve with heroin. I did it for two months straight, got sick, and the doctor gave me this opiate blocker. I got even sicker, and we had to go in for Civil War , and I could not perform.”

All logic dictates that Appetite… represents the never-to-be-repeated peak of Guns N’ Roses. Adler refuses to accept it.

“The thing that bothers me is that we didn’t finish what we started – because of me,” he says. “ Use Your Illusion would have been bigger and better. If they didn’t have that drummer [Matt Sorum]… He’s like a machine, nobody wants to hear that. You want to hear swing, feel, groove – that’s how I play. I did the demos for Use Your Illusion ; we’d play the songs, go to the booth and say: ‘This is gonna be bigger than fuckin’ Appetite …’

"And it would’ve been. But because of my fuck-up, we didn’t finish what we started. Years later, we still can’t finish what we started. It means so much to me to do that.

"Slash and Duff are part of my life again. Izzy is like a gypsy, he just travels the world, but I’ve been trying to get hold of him. More than anything, I want to be part of Axl’s life again.

"We’re brothers. And what do brothers do? They fight. Just because you don’t like your brother sometimes doesn’t mean you don’t love him."

The Rockpit

INTERVIEW: Steven Adler – Adler’s Appetite

12 April 2018 Andrew Massie

Steven Adler

In some ways, the name Steve Adler is synonymous with the 80’s hard rock scene in Los Angeles. As the original drummer for Guns N’ Roses, his legacy was well cemented on “Appetite For Destruction” back on it’s initial release in 1987 and the subsequent hoopla that eventuated from those songs. It’s an era in music history that is well documented in books and media worldwide but also in the people who lived in that scene at the time, a scene regarded as the pinnacle of hard rock in the 80’s. Sunset strip, Hollywood, the glam rock world and the cliche sex, drugs and rock n’ roll were showcased in high fashion in a time when a band dubbed ‘the most dangerous band in the world’ was breaking out of the seedy underground scene in a big way. Guns N’ Roses certainly played into that title and then some, and those like Steve Adler took it to a whole other level. It’s been well documented that whole story with Steve, even more so with his Mother Deanna Adler’s book “Sweet Child of Mine: How I lost My Son to Guns N’ Roses”, a tell all story on Steve’s battle with drug addiction and the life he lived with the band.

Steve recently announced a tour to Australia, bringing his reignited Adler’s Appetite band to the country for a whirlwind tour that will encompass performances of classic Guns N’ Roses material as well as a special Q&A session where fans will have the chance to ask the drummer questions on virtually anything. I had the chance to talk to Steve himself ahead of the tour to find out what he plans to bring to the tour and some of the things he is looking forward to seeing in Australia.

As a longtime fan of Guns N’ Roses, having the chance to talk to the actual drummer that appeared on such classics as “Appetite For Destruction” and “GNR Lies” is to say the least, bizarre but exciting. In this business, I’ve had the chance to speak to many great musicians of which some have been personal musical heroes of mine. The kind of bands I literally grew up listening to so to have the opportunity to once again have that music industry perk and chat to a dude I used to air drum to constantly (and still do mind you) is another footnote on this weird career I’m lucky to be a part of. On the phone, Steve is easy to get along with. A very warm and charming personality comes through the airwaves as if he was in the same room but all I could initally think off right before we got into the meat of the interview was that this was the same guy that did that amazing beat in ‘It’s So Easy’, the same guy who smirked all the way through one of the most infamous GNR gigs of all time, at the Ritz in 1988. That cheeky but enthusiastic grin was never forgotten in my mind to this day and one can only imagine what he was thinking at that time right as the band were exploding.

But as I said, his warm and jovial personality came through wonderfully as we said our hello’s and got past the obligatory phone meet and greets as we work our way to the interview. His appreciation for my time was to say the least, funny as I should be the one thanking him for his time. Instead I thanked him for making the trip to Australia in May which he was more than ecstatic about.

“ I’m so excited “, Steve says in a clearly emphatic way. “ I got a great band, got a broadway star singer. I haven’t been down there in forever, I think maybe ’88 so I mean put it this way, the show starts off with ‘Reckless Life’ and ends wth ‘Paradise City’ and a whole bunch of other things in between. Uncut version of Appetite plus extras! ”

There were many questions to be asked and with such little time and with much of his life well documented over the years, it seemed only natural to focus on the tour at hand. But the Q&A session that’s part of the tour brings up a whole lot of possibilities to really get to know the man behind the kit, the books that both he and his Mother Deanna Adler wrote obviously go into great detail on parts of his life story but of course, it only summarises everything in concise page format. Having the chance to ask more about his life in person is a whole different perspective.

“ We did one out here in L.A. with my Mom and it went over so well that we were going to keep doing more of them “, says Steve. “ My Mom’s book is so heartfelt that even if you have children who are addicts, it’s a book for them. But my book, ‘My Appetite For Destruction’ and other rock stars books, you’re just hearing about the parties and the drugs and sex, the travelling and all the craziness but never hear about how that craziness that you are doing in your life is affecting people that are closest to you, that love you. So my Mom’s book is the other side of the street if you know what I mean, my version of what I was doing .”

Steve continues on about the idea behind his Mom’s book and how important it can be for people going through the same thing. “ Now in this book you get an idea of how I was hurting her and what I was doing that affected her. Even if your successful or not successful and doing drugs, you are hurting the people that love you the most. I know that other people of course and myself, I didn’t wake up in the morning and go, ‘I’m going to go get messed up and high so I can piss my family off and the people that I love’. It’s a disease and I still have the disease but I’m not practicing that disease but I’ll still always have it. But even people who have kids that are addicts, this book is for them so that they can understand what’s going on and maybe what to do and how to handle it and realize that they are not the only ones. When you’re in a situation where your son or daughter is an addict, you feel like you’re the only ones and that everybody’s elses kids are perfect and it’s just me and my family but it’s not. So it’s a really great book to read and go learn about it .”

Steven Adler

When asked what kind of questions he gets asked the most from people, he pauses slightly with an almost hesitation before answering, “ Let’s see what happens out there because Australia is a pretty different world than to this goofball America where I live. But I’m sure I’m going to get questions that are smart and dignified, a lot of the questions I’m sure are going to be a hell of a lot more classier than what I’ve been asked out here in goofball America [laughs] “.

Goofball America. I suppose it’s fitting given what’s going on politically in the country but like Mike Muir from Suicidal Tendencies once told me in a recent interview, every country has their issues and all it takes is a mirror to be held up to the faces of those countries to really see what’s going on in their own countries. But we’re not here to talk all that nonsense political stuff and it is of course always interesting and enlightening to hear somebody else’s perspective on Australia and Steve simply has nothing but kind words to say about it and for good reason.

“ I hail Australia! “, exclaims Steve excitedly and then proceeds to inform me of something I had no idea about. “ My brother’s wife is from Australia and they just had a baby 7 or 8 months ago and they live out there so it’s exciting.” Steve goes on to talk about what he’s looking forward to when he arrives in Australia. “I’m looking forward to eating clean food and being around beautiful people, I want to eat real lobster. In America lobster is just like a giant shrimp, a real lobster is 3 feet fucking big with claws the size of my head. That’s what want to eat and clean food, steak that doesn’t have stuff in it. I love Austraia, even McDonalds in Australia I’ve never had in my life so I can’t wait! The most beautiful people, everybody is beautiful there .”

The interview flips as Steve decides to ask me a question, specifically about my marital status in which, first off kind of came out of nowhere and secondly I answered in the most complicated way as I wasn’t married per say but that my relationship with my long term de facto is as good as being married. So what’s all this about then?

“ Well if you’re not, me and you can get married so I can get a card to live there “, Steve explains as it dawns on me that there was a hilarious motive behind that question. “ You marry me and then I can live in Australia, how about that! ”

I had to laugh and given him credit for trying! I love Steve but just not in that way, even if for legal reasons. I did let him down easy though by responding that I wasn’t sure how the whole marriage thing for immigrants works in Australia but that any way we can get him down to Australia, we’ll take it! He took it well and we both laughed before Steve continues, “ Oh God I would love to live there. But I have a beautiful house with a beautiful view but I just love Australia, I love to rock out there and play for people.”

We continue on and discuss what we can expect at the show which looks to be a fun one by the sounds of it as Steve explains. “ Like I said we start with “Reckless Life”, end with “Paradise City” and we’re going to play out of respect for the great Michael Hutchence,  a couple of INXS songs and of course a Rose Tattoo song. So it’s going to be a lot of fun, everybody should come down and bring their GNR records, “Appetite”. I love to sign stuff and meeting people, I’m a big hugger, I’ve nothing but love to give. I love talking to tons of people so if you want a free hug, come down to the show. And if you want to hear GNR songs the way it’s supposed to be played on the drums, come down and see how the songs really go [laughs].”

We look forward to it. We leave it there as Steve sends out a final message for the Aussie fans before the tour starts in May. “ I love all of you and be prepared to have your asses rocked off! You better bring a spare pair of underwear [laughs], be prepared to have your soul crushed! ”

Steven Adler on Forgiving Axl Rose, Life After Guns N’ Roses

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

For the past 20 years, a large Guns N’ Roses poster advertising the band’s first tour of England has been hanging in Steven Adler ‘s living room. “Every time I have to go to the bathroom I have to walk past it,” says the former Guns N’ Roses drummer. “I’d always see it and say to myself, ‘One day we’re gonna reunite! We’re gonna do it! We’re too good of a team not to do this again.'”

When he returned to Los Angeles this past April after Axl Rose’s no-show at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony , Adler’s attitude started to change. “Now I walk past it and I say to myself, ‘I’m so glad I was a part of that,'” he says. “‘That was a great and exciting time of my life.’ It’s nice to appreciate it, but I’m no longer angry and pining for a reunion. I’m not angry about it anymore. It’s flushed out of my system.”

Right around the time it was becoming clear that Guns N’ Roses weren’t going to reform at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Adler broke up his band Adler’s Appetite. They had spent the past decade touring the world playing a set devoted to Guns N’ Roses classics. “I told the guys I wanted to do something that was relevant,” he says. “We played every village around the world. I’m not talking cities or towns. We played every village. It was time to move on.”

Adler’s Appetite played their final gig on New Year’s Eve, and just weeks later, Adler began jamming with singer Jacob Bunton, guitarist Lonny Paul and bassist Johnny Martin. “It was like God brought them to me,” says Adler. “It’s just been fucking magic.” The new group dubbed themselves Adler, and they cut their debut LP, Back From the Dead , in a matter of weeks.

Album Premiere: Steven Adler Shares Joy on ‘Back From the Dead’

Slash came into the studio at one point to play guitar on “Just Don’t Ask.” “For me to be a part of Slash’s life, I had to get my life together,” says Adler. “Slash was proud of me for how I was able to take care of myself. It was so nice to be living in the present with him. The whole thing was like a dream come true.”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Adler says he’s been sober since 2008. “I work at it every day,” he explains. “I used to wake up in the morning and say, ‘Oh, God.’ Now I wake up in the morning and look forward to life. I work out every morning with my guitarist.”

As viewers of VH1’s Celebrity Rehab and Sober House well know, Adler’s road to recovery was extremely rocky. Many have criticized the Dr. Drew show for being exploitative and, in the wake of the deaths of participants Mike Starr, Jeff Conway and Joey Kovar, wondered whether it should be pulled off the air. Adler has no such feelings. “It was the best thing I ever did for myself,” he says. “Having the treatment on TV made it easier because the camera doesn’t lie. You try to bullshit your way out of things, but then you watch yourself on camera and you see the truth . . . When you’re doing drugs you think you’re 10 feet tall and beautiful. But you can’t be in denial when there’s a video camera in your face.”

For now, Adler is focused entirely on his new band’s first tour. They plan on spending much of the next year playing around the entire globe, and their set will consist almost entirely of new material. “Out of respect for the fans, we will probably do two Guns N’ Roses songs,” he says. “We’ll probably do ‘Sweet Child O’Mine’ and ‘Mr. Brownstone.’ But beyond that it’s all about this band, though in certain countries we’re gonna have to play more than two. We’re going to do some dates with Duff McKagan’s band Loaded in South America, but I don’t think I’m supposed to talk about that yet.”

Republicans Are Basically Admitting the Hunter Biden Deposition Was a Bust

The diddy allegations aren’t entertainment. they’re disturbing, trump's team 'literally popping champagne' over supreme court taking up immunity claim, rust trial: alec baldwin heard rushing reloads in outtakes shown to jurors.

After the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony, Adler voiced tremendous frustration with Axl Rose , calling him an “asshole” and pledged never to talk about him in public again. Now, he says, “I’m not angry with Axl anymore. I love him and I feel blessed that I got to work with him and achieve what I achieved with him. I guess time does heal all wounds.”

Adler also regrets labeling the current lineup of Guns N’ Roses “scabs.” “I shouldn’t have said that,” he says. “I’ve grown up and matured. Holy crap! I’ve matured in the six months since we last spoke!”

Considered one of the greatest drummers in hard rock history, Steven Adler was a founding member of mega band Guns N’ Roses. Adler’s trademark drum sound is tattooed in the memory of every hard rock and heavy metal fan of the 1980s and 90s.

THE ADLER BRAND

Signature recordings featuring Adler’s adrenaline charged beating of the skins encompass all the biggest Guns N’ Roses hits. These include Welcome to the Jungle , Paradise City , Mr. Brownstone , Sweet Child O’ Mine , Used to Love Her , and Civil War among others.

The iconic drummer is still at the top of his game. As Adler said in recent radio interview on It’s Showtime with Rikki Lee on WHRU, he still plays every day. In fact, playing the drums gives Adler a natural high that has him in love with life and thrilled to be performing to cheering crowds around the world.

Now on tour with his band Adler’s Appetite, Steven Adler is still one of the greatest drummers on the planet. And you can tell, he is in love with the audience and playing live.

As great of a drummer as Steven Adler is, to do his music justice requires an exceptional group of musicians. Adler’s Appetite more than fits the bill.

GUITAR HEROES

Guitarist Michael Thomas is everything a rockstar should be. First of all, Thomas is a masterful musician. His fingers fly over the fretboard with a magical fluency as he shreds song after song, each one more memorable than the one before.

Michael Thomas is more than just a guitarist with great technical skill. More than any other guitarist in the industry, Thomas is the total package. With his long raven hair, muscular tattooed arms, and embrace of onstage dramatics, Michael Thomas knows how to sell the total rock n’ roll experience. Not only does he speak volumes with his guitar, he also sells every moment with the emotions on his face as well.

Playing rhythm guitar in Adler’s Appetite is the calm and cool Alistair James . James is the perfect compliment to Michael Thomas’s theatrical command of the stage. James has a vibe about him that is reminiscent of such great guitarists as Izzy Stradlin of the original GNR, Brad Whitford of Aerosmith, John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the legendary Les Paul. Simply put, there is a fluidity to his playing that is hypnotic.

IDEAL FRONTMAN

For a band to be truly great, it has to have a front man capable of commanding the spotlight. Adler’s Appetite has exactly that in Ari Kamin .

Kamin knows how to command the stage and strike stunning poses. He knows how to play to the audience and hold them in the palm of his hand. He knows how to share the stage and give each of the other musicians their time in the sun. And his voice? 100% excitement.

Adler discovered Kamin when he went to Argentina to appear as a guest at a concert featuring Axl Rose, Slash, and Duff McKagan on their GNR reunion tour. Kamin hits all the same notes Axl does, but with just enough of his own style to make it unique. Between his incredible voice and his youthful good looks, Ari Kamin might well be the future of rock n’ roll. As Adler put it in his interview with It’s Showtime with Rikki Lee , Axl Rose will always be the king, but Ari Kamin is making a name for himself as a true crown prince.

BAD TO THE BONE

No band is complete without a bass player pounding out the rhythm. Tanya O’Callaghan recently departed Adler’s Appetite to become Whitesnake’s first female bassist. Todd Kerns has been filling in on bass until a permanent replacement can be found. However, this concert featured Daniel Spriewald who also plays with Phil X. Spriewald is a very talented musician who flawlessly captured the necessary groove. He fit right in so well with the other stellar rockers in the band, I didn’t even realize he was a replacement until after the fact. He is super talented.

In their current tour, Adler’s Appetite recreates all of Steven Adler’s biggest hits with Guns N’ Roses. The renditions are faithful enough to the original recordings to please any GNR fan, but unique enough to keep the show exciting. Each moment on stage builds to the next. By the time the show ends, both the musicians and the audience are in a state of exhaustion and euphoria.

In addition to GNR hits, the set list also includes songs from Steven Adler’s solo albums under the band names Adler’s Appetite and Adler. At one point in the show, Kamin even launched into an acapella version of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah , delighting fans with his mix of reverence and vocal grit.

EXTRAORDINARY ACHIEVEMENT

The band Adler’s Appetite accomplishes a rare achievement – they provide a salute to hard rock history while still being relevant to modern music fans. Simply put, they are a phenomenal band. If you get the chance to see Adler’s Appetite – even if it means driving to another city or state – do it. You will have the hard rock experience of a lifetime.

Of course, the Steven Adler experience would not be complete without the proper tools of the trade. Adler uses Soultone Cymbals and DW Drums – both of which he credits as the best in the industry.

No successful tour happens by magic. Not only does the band put in hours of rehearsal perfecting their sound, there are also behind the scenes players that add to the overall success of each show. For Adler’s Appetite the man in charge of making sure all pistons are firing is tour manager Steve Sprite. In addition to keeping everything running smooth for Adler’s Appetite, Sprite also runs Warrior Wellness .

Steven Adler, Michael Thomas, Alistair James, Ari Kamin, and Daniel Spriewald know how to put a damn good show. When Adler’s Appetite comes to your neck of the woods, do yourself a favor and gather up all your rocker friends and go to the concert. You won’t be disappointed. In fact, you’ll love and treasure the experience.

For many drummers, it takes more than several albums to establish their reputation. But for Steven Adler, it took only one. It is the same album that gets him on the list of top hard rock drummers lists.

That era-defining work is the “Appetite for Destruction.” While drumming for Guns ‘n’ Roses , Adler gave a performance that left everyone amused. Not very many drummers can live up to such a reputation , one that re-designed the world of drumming.

Steven Adler was born on January 22, 1965. The American musician is best known as the former writer of Guns ‘n’ Roses. He was with the group throughout the 80s, achieving worldwide success . But due to his heroin addiction, the drummer was fired from Guns ‘n’ Roses in 1990.

About Steven Adler, the Drummer of Guns n’ Roses’

He reformed from the addiction and became a better person before joining BulletBoys . Adler was the drummer for Adler’s Appetite, a band he assisted to form. But he declared no interest in the band in 2017 due to what he called poorly attended concerts.

Adler joined Guns ‘n’ Roses at the right time when he needed a boost in his career. He came to replace the original drummer how has just quit. He and Slash joined their former bandmate from Road Crew to complete the team. They played in nightclubs and many other different places. Later, they opened opportunities for even larger acts before his drug addiction issue set in.

What happened to Steven Adler the drummer of Guns N Roses?

Steven Adler run a campaign to rejoin Guns N’ Roses full-time alongside Slash and Duff McKagan fell short a couple of years in 2020, but  the band got reunited when Adler’s guest appearances on the ‘Not in This Lifetime’ tour . Adler joined the band onstage during a handful of shows in 2016.

What happened to Steven Adler the drummer for Guns N Roses?

Adler was kicked out of Guns N’ Roses in 1990 due to his drug addiction. He then went to rehab and got clean, but he relapsed in 2005. In 2008, he was again fired from the band. Since then, he has appeared on reality TV shows and written a book called “My Appetite for Destruction”

While speaking to a local magazine, one of his fans was heard saying how the drummer has changed his life. “Adler is one of the best hard rock and metal drummers I have ever seen.”

Who got kicked out of Guns N Roses?

Steven Adler did, and it was because of his heroin addiction. Steven Adler was one of the founding members of Guns N Roses. He played on their debut album, Appetite for Destruction, and co-wrote some of their hits, including “Sweet Child O’ Mine.” But his drug use led to his firing in 1990.

Can Steven Adler still play drums in 2024?

Only time will tell, but Steven Adler is certainly one of the top hard rock drummers out there. His skills on the drums are undeniable, and he’s shown himself to be a true force to reckon with in the world of rock music. Whether or not he’ll still be playing the drums in 2022 remains to be seen,

In a band, the drummer is often unnoticed. Vocalists and guitarists are always in the spotlight while the drummer works from the background. Adler tried changing all that by assuring a unique approach to every piece he played. Each time he sits behind the kit, you can expect to hear something new and interesting.

After his exit from Guns ‘n’ Roses, Adler was set to join AC/DC and move to Australia. However, that was not to happen after Axle Rose fired him onstage due to his drum addition, causing the AC/DC manager to withdraw their offer. But he did not give up yet, understanding how crucial his career was . He joined the newly reformed Guns ‘n’ Roses and continued doing what he loved the most.

Despite all the ups and downs in his life, Adler remained strong in his showmanship . The years that followed his departure from Guns ‘n’ Roses were a bit of touch, but he continued developing new styles that amused many.  His influence in the industry will be felt forever. His speed and precision, coupled with the skill’s mastery, make him a drummer worth commending.

It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock n’ roll….

It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock n’ roll…

Truer words have never been spoken. For Michael Thomas that journey would start at the age of 12 by picking up his first guitar and jamming along to the albums of most of the Artists he would one day work with. At 17 he moved from Northern California to Los Angeles determined to make his mark. After a few years of playing the Hollywood circuit his first break to the big stage came with ENGINES OF AGGRESSION (Priority Records). Upon returning from a tour of Japan his next venture with BEAUTIFUL CREATURES (Warner Bros.) would team him in the recording studio with legendary producer Beau Hill. After extensive touring Michael decided it was time to do his own project where he wrote, played, sang, mixed and produced...he aptly named his new band FASTBACK . Completing the record and a U.S. tour lead to a call from the notorious L.A. based FASTER PUSSYCAT (Full Effect Records) in which Michael toured the globe and recorded a live record with the group in Australia. Mixed in with these duties he also began to work with Steven Adler of GUNS’N’ROSES.

Michael would eventually make the band with Steven, ADLER’S APPETITE , his main priority by penning the Music & Lyrics to the song “ALIVE” that would accompany Steven’s New York Time’s Best Selling autobiography “My Appetite for Destruction”. The single made its world premiere on The Howard Stern Show and was featured on ESPN, MTV and VH1 among others. Shortly after, Michael started a new project BLACKHEART SAINTS, which he developed to fulfill his creative need for a music style with a harder, melodic edge. Electric & acoustic performances with BLACKHEART SAINTS continue to grow between touring and recording with his established artists.

After numerous world tours Michael took another step forward joining ANCHORED,  which lead him to the world famous NRG Recording Studios. Working with renowned producer Jay Baumgardner (Linkin Park, Papa Roach, Bush) they completed their debut album and a Single/Music Video w/ rap icon Snoop Dogg. Upon completion of the record touring cycle Michael received a call from Dallas, TX based BRAND NEW MACHINE to join them for tour dates including shows overseas with GUNS’N’ROSES. Following the tour Michael wrote and recorded the album “The Devil Made Me Do It” with the band and Ryan Green producing (Cheap Trick, Megadeth). The release of the record saw the band on tour with Trapt, Drowning Pool, Volbeat, and HIM. Upon completion of the Brand New Machine touring cycle, Michael received a call to work with Danique van der Valugt, of The Voice, for extensive touring and recording in Europe.

Fast-forward to 2017, Michael renewed his duties with legendary drummer Steven Adler for a tour of Australia, with former American Idol alum Constantine Maroulis at the microphone. When the band returned stateside, they embarked on a series of U.S. shows, including a seven-day run on the high seas with KISS, The Darkness, and Warrant for KISS Kruise IX. Michael and the band continue to tour, in addition to his feature film and television contributions.

2023 will host numerous shows and the release of new original material throughout the course of the year. Stay tuned for more updates!

STEVEN ADLER: How I Ended Up Recruiting Singer Of GUNS N' ROSES Tribute Act For My Solo Band

An interview with former GUNS N' ROSES drummer Steven Adler conducted in July at the M3 Rock Festival at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland was recently uploaded to the M3 Rock Festival YouTube channel and can now be seen below.

Asked how he ended up recruiting Ariel Kamin , the singer of Argentinian GN'R tribute band SON OF A GUN , to front his ADLER solo band, Steven said: "Actually, I went to Argentina [in November 2016] — my wife's from there; her family lives there — and the GN'R guys invited me to do a couple of songs. And so I had a little party at a club called the Roxy in [Buenos Aires], and he was the singer [that played with us that night]. You can go on my web site and see — the Roxy in Argentina. He was so great. I was, like, 'You're coming with me.' And the guitar player from the band that opened up for GN'R was so amazing. I told him, 'Come down. I wanna jam with you.' And he came down. I tell you, if [ GUNS N' ROSES guitarist] Slash would have seen him playing, he would have been in the back, in the dressing room, practicing. That's how good he was."

Joining Adler and Kamin in ADLER 's current touring lineup are guitarists Michael Thomas and Alistair James , and bassist Todd Kerns (filling in for Tanya O Callaghan , who recently became the new bassist of WHITESNAKE ).

Kamin replaced Constantine Maroulis of "American Idol" and "Rock Of Ages" fame, who was the vocalist for ADLER'S APPETITE for a dozen or so dates in May 2018, including an Australian tour.

Although he wasn't included in the lineup that launched the "Not In This Lifetime" trek in 2016, Adler rejoined GUNS N' ROSES at several shows on the tour, including three stops on the U.S. leg and one gig in Buenos Aires, Argentina, playing drums on "Out Ta Get Me" and "My Michelle" .

In February 2017, Adler revealed that he was originally supposed to appear at more than just a handful of shows on the GUNS N' ROSES reunion trek. He claimed that he expected to play all the "Appetite For Destruction" material during the entire tour, only to be told he was out after he hurt his back during rehearsals.

Speculation was rampant that Adler would participate in at least a portion of the reunion tour ever since GUNS made it official in January 2016. The regular GUNS drummer for several years has been Frank Ferrer , who is also part of the current lineup.
