How long are the tours? Our Chicago mini bus tour is two hours. The combination with the bus and Chicago River Architecture boat tour about 3.5-4 hours.

Where do we start the tour? Our tour picks up at most of the downtown Chicago hotels. If you are not staying at one of them, give us a call and we’ll tell you where to go (in the nicest possible sense).

Will there definitely be seats for us? Yes. Several of our competitors over-sell their tours, so that sometimes there are seats, sometimes not. Once you reserve with us, your seats will be yours for the entire tour. Also, our seats are nice and plush. Not plastic seats or wooden benches.

Can we take lots of photos? Absolutely. While you can take pics throughout the tour, we have 3 (sometimes 4) photo stops. They are located in the best places to get the most amazing pictures of Chicago.

Can we easily ask questions of our guide? Our mini buses hold just 14 guests. That way, you’ll be close to the guide and able to ask questions (and get correct answers)

Are Your Tour Guides Experienced? Our guides are all very experienced and knowledgeable about Chicago. They have all lived here for at least 20 years. You can ask them anything.

Will we see anything designed by Frank Lloyd Wright? Only a couple of walking tours and ours take you inside one of the first skyscrapers ever built, The Rookery. The awe inspiring lobby was designed by Mr. Wright. You may recognize it from the movies “The Untouchables” and “Home Alone Part 2”.

How does the architecture boat tour portion work? At the end of your mini bus tour, we will take you to the Shoreline Sightseeing dock on Michigan Ave. The boat tours leave about every 30-45 minutes and you can use your tickets at any time, even on a different day. Let’s say that it is raining or too hot (or both), you have the option to wait until a better time to ride the boat.

HOP-ON-HOP-OFF DOUBLE-DECKER BUS TOUR

A popular option for bus tours is the hop-on-hop-off tour variety.

All the double-decker buses in this section run continuously along mapped routes, and riders have the option to board at several predetermined locations throughout the city.

Travelers can get off the bus at any of these stops and discover the landmarks for themselves. After exploring various areas of Chicago, hop back onto the bus and continue your journey!

There are pre-recorded commentaries that tell you about what you're seeing.

Each ticket will be valid for a certain amount of time (typically 24-48 hours) and you can come and go as you please.

Ticket prices range from $19-$49 for adults and $14-$35 for children, depending on which kind of tour is chosen from which company.

Read our full comparison post on hop-on-hop-off bus tours , where we detail the pros and cons, route maps, and options for discounts.

NON-STOP SIGHTSEEING TOURS

Although hop-on-hop-off bus tours can be very informative, they are designed for exploring the city to allow you to pick your stops and explore at your own pace.

Non-stop sightseeing tours are about guiding you through a specific area, with a live guide's commentary covering the significance of iconic landmarks and the history of an area.

Note that "non-stop" is a bit of a misnomer, as they do stop from time to time, but they make the choice about which sites they will be taking people to.

See It All Mini Bus Tours Chicago

While some trips are focused on how Chicago became such a bustling city of industry, other tours center their attention on the architectural history of the Windy City.

Most of these services are very highly rated and tickets will cost between $30-$50 for adults and $15-$37 for children.

That's one of many reasons that we have a Chicago Travel Tips group on Facebook, where travelers can ask questions about any tour or activity of interest.

Here are a few of the more helpful comments we found:

tour in chicago by bus

When it comes to the hop on hop off tours, most people agree that they're a very useful way to become familiar with the city and figure out where everything is located.

That said, there are some things you might want to consider before purchasing tickets, as this next comment reveals.

tour in chicago by bus

As one of our group members notes, when you're using a tourist pass to get tickets for a hop on hop off bus tour, chances are it will only be a 1 day ticket.

Even if you get a 2 day pass, it's very likely the bus tour ticket will only be valid for 1 day.

tour in chicago by bus

Other Chicago bus tours are more hit and miss when it comes to the reviews. While some people really enjoyed the Mob and Crime tour, others felt it wasn't anything special.

Thankfully, this isn't an extremely common sentiment, and it does seem that a majority of people who took this tour had a lot of fun.

Chicago Bus Tours

One of the most traditional ways to explore any new city is by taking a bus tour. With Chicago’s expansive landscape and top attractions spread across multiple neighborhoods, there’s a real need for some assistance in your explorations. Fortunately for visitors to Chicago, bus tours abound in a wide variety of styles. They also come in at multiple different price points, too, so you could choose a very budget-friendly option to see the top sights only, or make a bit of an investment to see the whole city on a multi-hour tour. Whatever style of bus tour you’re looking for, it’s likely that Chicago has an option or two for you.

tour in chicago by bus

Sightseeing tours are the most popular, and for good reason. These tours provide expert narration and showcase the best sights of the city. You can opt to explore only the North Side, the South Shore, or both on a comprehensive tour. Another, similar style of bus tour is the hop-on hop-off variety. On these tours, you can still enjoy a fully-narrated drive while also having the benefit of being able to disembark at any of their predetermined stops to explore a top landmark, neighborhood, or attraction. A few companies offer this option, so it’s a popular type of tour that you can easily find good deals on.

Beyond the basics, there are a few bus tours with specific themes. For example, some tours run at night, showcasing Chicago in all of her illuminated glory. See Chicagoans out to play and the Magnificent Mile vibrant with color and lights – it’s a real experience that visitors should not pass up. Other themes are more culturally-oriented, like the popular Chicago Crime Tours. These bus tours highlight locations in the city that are or have been associated with the mob in Chicago, the city where Al Capone made his money and his fame.

A few of the most popular tours are also organized around food and drink. Some are family-friendly, offering culinary explorations around cuisines like pizza, hotdogs, Italian, and ethnic food of various types. Others are aimed at adult audiences only, featuring alcohol-themed tours that explore Chicago’s preeminent craft beer scene, cocktails, historic pubs, and more. Depending upon the tour company you choose, the tours can include food and drink or only transportation.

If you’re trying to decide which Chicago tour might be right for you, here’s a list of the top Chicago tour companies that visitors tend to choose from.

Gray Line Tours

Offers 5 different tour options in Chicago. Popular Gray Line Chicago tours include the Chicago Grand City tour, the Chicago North Side tour, and the Historic Chicago South Shore tour.

Tips for Making the Most of Your Big Bus Tour

A Big Bus Tour in Chicago is the perfect way to explore the city and its attractions. From the vibrant downtown area to the gorgeous waterfront and world-renowned museums, there is something for everyone to enjoy. But before you hop on the bus and start your tour, here are some tips to help you make the most of your experience.

First and foremost, it’s important to plan when booking your bus tickets. There are many discounts and deals available online so be sure to do your research before purchasing. Also, be aware that certain attractions may be closed or have limited hours during peak season or holidays, so plan accordingly.

Once you’ve secured your ticket and are ready to hit the road, be sure to find a seat with a good view. If possible, try to get a window seat so you can take in the sights and sounds of the city. If you’re feeling adventurous, you may even want to book a seat on the top level of the bus for an even better view.

Be Prepared

Another great tip is to bring along snacks and drinks to keep you going throughout the tour. Make sure to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen as Chicago’s summer heat can be brutal! Additionally, don’t forget your camera – there will be plenty of photo ops on this incredible journey.

Ask the Locals

During your tour, don’t forget to take advantage of the audio commentary and other resources provided by the Big Bus staff. This is a great way to learn more about the city and its attractions, as well as get recommendations for places to eat and things to do in each neighborhood.

Finally, don’t forget to have fun! A Big Bus Tour in Chicago is a unique way to explore all that this amazing city has to offer.

Are There Toilets on the Tour Bus in Chicago

Unlike charter buses, you won’t travel long between stops. So the best thing to do is exit at a stop, find a public restroom, see an attraction, if desired, and then catch the next bus.

If you are not sure where to find one, ask a Big Bus guide on the street. The driver may also have some suggestions. However, you can easily find public restrooms at the Water Tower Shopping Center (stop #9), and Navy Pier (stop #8).

Where to Catch the Big Bus Tour in Chicago

During the tour, the buses only stop at designated stops. Your ticket is good for as long as the buses operate during the day. During the day, all tour buses in motion will end at the Chicago Riverwalk when the clocks strikes 5:00 PM.

The tour also highlights non-food-related landmarks like the Chicago Cultural Center, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Marshall Field and Company Building, which visitors tend to appreciate. Guides consistently win praise for their knowledge of and enthusiasm for Chicago history. Tickets, which start at $59.50, include all food. (Adult beverages can be purchased separately where available.) Groups are limited to 18 people. Tastebud Tours also offers other food-centric excursions as well as private tours.

Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise

The Chicago Architecture Foundation's River Cruise ferries guests along the Chicago River as docents from the Chicago Architecture Center regale them with the stories behind more than 50 notable buildings. The volunteer docents repeatedly win high praise from reviewers for their in-depth knowledge of the city's history and its structures. The cruising vessels, part of the Chicago's First Lady Cruises fleet, can carry up to 250 people and boast full-service bars and open-air upper decks. Tickets for the 90-minute excursions cost around $45 for daytime cruises. Twilight outings are a few dollars more. For an additional $5, you can also gain admittance to the Chicago Architecture Center (which usually costs $12 on its own).

Guides on Chicago Prohibition Tours can offer travelers suggestions on Prohibition-inspired drinks to order

Chicago Prohibition Tour – Original

Chicago Prohibition Tours explore a notoriously eventful moment in the city's history. Its flagship offering visits the sites of four former speakeasies via bus over the course of 3 1/2 hours. Guides provide historical information and share what kinds of drinks would be representative of those consumed illicitly during the Prohibition era. Additionally, you will be driven from location to location by the company. Reviewers rave about the fast-talking guide and say this is an experience both locals and visitors will enjoy. Others appreciate that each bar on the tour is unique. Tickets, which start at $55, do not include food or drinks, which can be ordered separately at tour-takers' discretion. There is also a walking version of this tour that lasts 2 1/2 hours.

Urban Kayak Chicago Riverwalk – Historic Chicago Tour

For a "duck's-eye," up-close view of the city, take Urban Kayak's Historic Chicago Tour. Starting at the Riverwalk , tour-takers paddle their kayaks on the main branch of the Chicago River with periodic stops at points of historical interest, where guides provide information regarding the city's famed architecture. Reviewers say this is a great experience, even for beginners. Meanwhile, others note that the experienced guides are skillful at navigating boat traffic. Tickets cost approximately $65 for a single kayak or $130 for a tandem (two-person) kayak for the approximately two-hour tour. Urban Kayak also offers kayak rentals and paddleboarding classes.

Shoreline Sightseeing – Skyline Lake Tours

Shoreline Sightseeing Skyline Lake Tours offer unrivaled views of Chicago's skyline, and many photo opportunities, via cruises along the Lake Michigan shoreline. The 6-mile trip provides views of notable landmarks, such as the John Hancock Center, the Willis Tower (aka the Sears Tower), Adler Planetarium and the Field Museum . According to reviewers, these iconic buildings are much more visible from the water than they are on the street. Many say this tour was the highlight of their Chicago trip. Tickets for the 40-minute, narrated boat rides start at $23 for adults and $8 for children ages 3 to 12. Kids 2 and younger ride free. Travelers can purchase drinks at the onboard cash bar. Shoreline Sightseeing also offers architecture-focused tours along the Chicago River.

Chicago cites migrant bus operators for illegally dumping waste

B us operators bringing migrants to Chicago have racked up dozens of violations since the city issued new restrictions in November, including illegal waste dumping.

Why it matters: Chicago has struggled to hold bus companies accountable for a slew of issues that put both migrants and the city at risk.

By the numbers: City officials so far have impounded two buses and issued 95 citations, including for dropping off passengers at unapproved locations or during unapproved times. Some were ticketed for operating without permits.

  • They've also cited three bus companies for illegally dumping waste.
  • Operators had until late Monday to respond to the charges.

What they're saying: The office of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott — who boasts that he's bused about 31,000 migrants to Chicago since 2022 — did not respond to Axios' request for comment about the allegations.

  • City officials haven't yet said how many operators responded to the citations.

Flashback: The alleged dumping comes 20 years after another high-profile waste incident involving a visiting bus outraged Chicagoans.

  • On Aug. 8, 2004 , a Dave Matthews Band tour bus released 800 pounds of liquid waste from the Kinzie Street Bridge onto passengers of an architectural tour boat below.
  • Some passengers fell ill. The band eventually paid $200,000 in fines for the violation.
  • Since then, people have placed signs on the bridge commemorating the incident — including one last year that read, "No one died that day but many wish they had."

What we're watching: One of the ticketed Texas bus companies has filed a lawsuit against the city, charging that the drop-off restrictions violate interstate commerce laws, among others.

What's next: The city's Law Department says it will continue to prosecute the cases over the next several months.

Busta Rhymes cancels all 2024 Blockbusta tour dates one week before first show

66th GRAMMY Awards - 2024 Recording Academy Honors Presented By The Black Music Collective

Busta Rhymes was set to embark on a 24-date Blockbusta tour, but it has been cancelled based on updates on Ticketmaster.com.

Every concert, from the March 13 opener in San Francisco to the April 21 closing show in the rapper's hometown of Brooklyn, is listed as cancelled on the concert ticketing site.

The tour stop set for April 14 at Radius in Chicago is also canceled. Late Wednesday afternoon, the venue's website no longer listed information about the show.

USA TODAY has reached out to Rhymes' reps and Live Nation, which announced the tour in November 2023.

Previously, Rhymes had been on 50 Cent's The Final Lap tour, which ended in December. Before heading out on that tour, Rhymes detailed in Men's Health magazine how he had lost 100 pounds to improve his health after suffering what he described as "felt like I was having like an asthma attack — but I don’t have asthma."

He lost more weight while touring with 50 Cent, Rhymes said in November 2023 while promoting the release of his "Blockbusta" album, Complex reported .

The multiplatinum rapper, songwriter and record producer – known for songs such as “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See” and "Woo-Hah!! Got You All in Check" – had been honored at the BET Awards in June 2023 with a lifetime achievement award. Late last month, he performed at a joint The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and Spotify event benefiting Musicians On Call (MOC) at newly opened venue The Atlantis in Washington DC.

If you are holding tickets to Rhymes' tour, there should be an update coming from Ticketmaster about rescheduled dates or refunds.
