Newquay car park options & information

Newquay car park options & information, date posted: 31 may 2023.

Car parking in Newquay isn’t as troublesome as some of the other tourist hotspots, but as with any popular Cornwall town or village it’s always worth planning ahead when it comes to travel. On-street parking is highly unlikely anywhere in peak season, so we’d recommend choosing one of the many long stay car parks in Newquay.

If you’re looking for a short stay car park in Newquay, there’s a Council run car park on Fore Street (44 spaces), for up to 30 min it’s £1.30, up to 1 hour – £2.20, or 1 to 2 hours – £4.40. It’s not the most cost-effective way to park, and it’s likely that you’ll need more time.

Many of Cornish Secrets properties come with their own parking space,  click here to see our Newquay self-catering accommodation.

Long stay car parks Newquay

Most of the car parks in Newquay are long stay, which are great for days spent at Newquay beaches. Newquay Council have 13 car parks to choose from. Costing £60, this is the most sensible option when it comes to car parking in Newquay, it covers eight of the long stays and the tickets are electronic so you won’t have to display a ticket.

Rover tickets are available to buy in advance online , by calling 0300 1234 222 or emailing Cornwall Council.

13 best beaches in newquay: a complete guide.

You’ve probably already heard that Newquay is an amazing place for beaches. That’s why you’re here, right? In this guide we detail more than a dozen beaches in Newquay and around the nearby coastline, all based on our own experiences of visiting. We’ll show you the best Newquay beaches for sunbathing, swimming, surfing, family days out, dog adventures, or just enjoying the spectacular scenery of the Cornwall coast.

This site contains links to travel services we recommend, from which we may make commission at no extra cost to you.

In this article:

Newquay beaches: a quick introduction

Lisa and I have both been visiting Newquay since we were kids. My first visit was on a camping trip with my Dad when I was 8, and I was mesmerised by the vibrant surfer beaches, live music performances and skater shows that were going on. For Lisa, her first experience was a summer holiday with school friends at 18 before she left home for uni.

We’ve both returned many times over the years, and hitting the beach is always one of our favourite things to do in Newquay  at any time of year.

It’s true that Newquay has a big reputation for adventure and for partying. It’s also the surfing capital of the UK. Busy, active beaches are part of Newquay’s fabric, but that’s not all there is to the place.

You can also find many quieter spots on the coastline in and around Newquay Bay. Hidden coves and beaches, where you can explore or sunbathe in peace, are just a few footsteps away from all the action.

No town in Cornwall has a greater diversity of beaches than Newquay. That’s what we love about it. Ready to find out more? Let’s dive in and take a look.

Best beaches in Newquay

Newquay’s coastline is spread across two large bays. Newquay Bay, at the heart of the town, is dotted with numerous interlinking sandy beaches, while Fistral Bay faces out to the west with one long, sprawling beach at its core. That’s where we’ll begin.

  • Fistral Beach
  • Great for: surfing, games, sunbathing and dog walks
  • Parking: there are various paid car parks close to the beachfront
  • Lifeguards: yes, from Easter bank holiday to the end of October
  • Dog friendly? Yes, all year round
  • Toilets: yes, at both ends of the beach

Fistral beach is Newquay’s most famous beach. It is world renowned because of its brilliant surfing conditions, and it has hosted many international surfing competitions over the years.

The surf is so good at Fistral Beach because of its exposure to swells from the Atlantic Ocean, facing directly out to the west with no obstruction. Far-away storms send waves teeming into Fistral Bay, and deep sandbanks at the beach accentuate them.

Pro surfers love Fistral Beach, especially the northern side, but it’s also good for beginners. You can take an introduction surf lesson with Cornish Wave, who run taster sessions here and across on Towan Beach.

Fistral Beach isn’t just about surfing. It’s a huge, long and wide beach that stretches out between two headlands, back by golden dunes. The sheer size and sun exposure make it a great all-round beach for swimming, sunbathing, games and walks. We love the fact it’s dog-friendly even in summer, which isn’t usually the case for beaches as popular as this one.

Look out for the breathtaking Headland Hotel that stands overlooking the north of the beach. If you want a truly special place to stay for your visit, this 5-star Victorian red-bricked stunner is one of Cornwall’s best hotels.

  • Towan Beach
  • Great for: family days out, beginner surfers, bodyboarding, swimming
  • Parking: there is a small beach car park, or several town centre car parks nearby
  • Lifeguards: yes, from May to September
  • Toilets: yes

Towan Beach is the closest beach to Newquay town centre, situated right near the bars, restaurants and shops around Fore Street. It’s one of the calmest beaches in Newquay, being well sheltered by the western enclosure of the bay.

Waves do still find their way to the shores, and so this is an ideal beach to learn to surf in calmer waters or to try other water sports like bodyboarding. We like a swim here too when it’s gentle.

The beach is flat with great quality sand. Its location means it does get busy, especially in high season, so you can usually expect crowds.

Families with kids love Towan Beach, and there’s always a game of beach cricket going on! You could also combine a day out here with a trip to the Blue Reef Aquarium, which is right behind the beach.

Look out for Jago’s Island at the eastern end of the beach; this tall rock stack has an early 20th-century house built on it, connected precariously by a bridge from the mainland. Arthur Conan Doyle is among the celebrity guests who have stayed at the house.

  • Great Western Beach
  • Great for: long walks, paddling, exploring pools and caves
  • Parking: Newquay Station Car Park is the closest, with more town centre parking nearby
  • Lifeguards: no
  • Toilets: yes, open 10am to 6pm in through summer (closed in winter)

Just along from Towan Beach to the east is the vast expanse of Great Western Beach, hidden from view under jaw-dropping high cliffs.

Despite its central location, Great Western Beach is one of the quietest beaches in Newquay. It is riddled with quirky little rock pools and caves around its edge, so it’s amazing for kids (or big kids like us) to go exploring.

Great Western Beach is also one of Newquay’s biggest, and is dog-friendly all year round. When the tide is low it’s a fabulous spot for long, leisurely walks, and having a splash along the rippling shore.

The beach takes its name from the legendary Great Western Railway, which skyrocketed Newquay as a tourist destination when it opened in 1876. The line ran until 1960, but its name and aura lives on in vintage posters of this sprawling beach.

Lusty Glaze Beach

  • Great for: water sports and adventure activities, family fun, sunset views
  • Parking: the beach has a pay and display car park
  • Lifeguards: yes, from April to October
  • Dog friendly? Not allowed from May to September
  • Toilets: no

Lusty Glaze Beach , also called Newquay Beach, has the most incredible visual setting. It is nestled among a horse-shoe of towering cliffs, creating a spectacular natural cauldron.

Access to the beach can be tricky. When the tide is low, you can walk across from neighbouring Tolcarne Beach, or across the coastal path over Glendorgal Headland from Porth Beach on the other side. But at other times, the only way is by descending a steep 368-step stairway.

This doesn’t stop Lusty Glaze Beach from being a popular one. It’s often busy, and one of the main draws is its adventure activities. The beach is a hub for pursuits like rock-climbing, abseiling, and even bungee jumping! There’s an activity centre at the beach where you can sign up.

Lusty Glaze beach faces to the west, so if you come at the end of the day you can enjoy an awesome sunset view across Newquay Bay.

Porth Beach

  • Great for: exploring rock pools, coastal walks, sunbathing
  • Parking: there is a small car park next to the beach, and you can also access from Lusty Glaze Beach Car Park

Porth Beach occupies a huge narrow inlet on the far eastern side of Newquay Bay. The long and narrow beach provides a large expanse of sand that is neatly sheltered between two headlands.

We love Porth Beach because it’s usually quiet and there is a great little maze of rock pools, especially underneath the cliffs of Trevelgue Head on the east side. The sand slopes gently down to the water, intersected with little streams.

Trevelgue Head has an ancient fort and settlement site at its very tip. You can follow a marked trail all the way to the end of it, traversing a footbridge along the way. The views are gorgeous in both directions when you reach the end, where we like to take a picnic.

Porth Beach can be a cool surfing spot if you’re heading to Cornwall in winter , but surfing isn’t allowed in the summer months.

Whipsiderry Beach

  • Great for: exploring rock pools and caves, sunbathing
  • Parking: use the parking for Porth Beach or road parking in Trevelgue village

In our humble opinion, Whipsiderry Beach is the most beautiful of all the beaches in Newquay. This secluded cove beyond the far side of Trevelgue Head is a real hidden gem.

I first came across Whipsiderry Beach by accident when walking along the coastal path. The only entry point to the beach is via a steep and narrow stairway that hugs the cliff.

Low tide is the best time to visit Whipsiderry Beach and make the most of its caves, rock stacks, islands and pools. Even at the height of summer it’s usually quiet. It’s like a little sandy adventure playground all to yourself.

Newquay Harbour

  • Great for: quiet sunbathing
  • Parking: there is a small harbour car park, and other parking in the town centre nearby

Newquay Harbour has been a focal point of life in the town for almost 800 years. It’s still a thriving fishing port, especially known for its shellfish, and hosts festivals and events in the summer.

It’s not so well known that the harbour also features a beach. Small inlets of sand are revealed when the sand goes down, and this is one of the most sheltered spots along Newquay Bay. When the weather is nice, this becomes a great little sun trap.

Best beaches near Newquay

Newquay sits along one of the most scenic stretches of the Cornish coastline, and if you travel away from the town in either direction you will soon find many more great beaches. This is why we love Newquay as a base for a Cornwall road trip adventure .

Here’s a selection of our favourite beaches near Newquay to try for something a little different.

  • Crantock Beach
  • Great for: exploring wildlife, long walks,
  • Parking: the beach has a National Trust car park, plus parking in the village
  • Toilets: yes, at the car park

Crantock is only separated from Newquay by the River Gannel, but you have to drive around the estuary to reach it, which takes about 15 minutes.

This is one of the largest beaches within the vicinity of Newquay, covered by fine golden-white sand. A labyrinth of dunes at the rear of the beach known as Rushy Green is one of its defining features. This was once a great place to explore, but the dunes have become unstable and it’s now advised to avoid them.

You can still meet a lot of wildlife around this relatively untouched beach, and it’s a nice scenic spot for long beach walks. The water can be fun for swimming and water sports, but there are also unpredictable currents, so it’s best to have a dip only when the lifeguard service is on.

Polly Joke Beach

  • Great for: exploring, walks, paddling, sunbathing and the famous Polly Joke poppies
  • Parking: car parking in West Pentire village

Perched midway between Newquay and Holywell Bay inside a narrow cove, Polly Joke Beach is one the great untouched beauties of the Cornish coast.

It take a little effort to reach the beach; you need to park up in West Pentire village and walk about 10 minutes along the coastal path. But once you arrive, you can enjoy this picturesque little beach and its network of rock pools with very few tourists around.

In late spring, the fields around the beach bloom with bright red poppies. The Polly Joke poppies are a unique sight, famous among locals. Check out this guide to the Polly Joke poppies if you want to try and see them yourself.

Perranporth

  • Great for: swimming, surfing, family adventures, dog walks and games
  • Parking: a choice of car parks near the beach
  • Dog friendly? Yes, but must be on a lead in July and August

Perranporth Beach is one of the most popular in the area and is featured in our guide to the best beaches in Cornwall . It’s an absolutely huge sandy beach that is riddled with rock formations, pools and caves to explore.

The beach is always busy, even in off-season. We came on a Saturday in January when the weather forecast was good, and it was absolutely packed! It’s great for family fun at the beach and there’s loads of space to explore, but not the best option if you want to avoid the crowds.

A pub called the Watering Hole sits at the heart of the beach, and is a nice spot to grab a bite to eat with sea views. The beach is right next to the resort town of Perranporth, so you’re never far away from a shop or a café.

Natural rock formations at either side of the beach give Perranporth Beach some interesting quirks. Most notable is Chapel Rock, which stands in the middle of the beach and features a concealed natural tidal swimming pool.

Watergate Bay

  • Great for: swimming, surfing, adventure activities, walks, games
  • Parking: there’s a car park near the beach and road parking nearby

Over to the east side of Newquay, Watergate Bay features another colossal unbroken stretch of sand enclosed by towering cliffs. The beach extends more than 2 miles and has some of the best quality water anywhere in the UK.

A little village sits over the bay, where you can park up and be on the sand in seconds. While it’s a popular spot, the beach is so vast that you’re never short of space.

Watergate Bay has great conditions for surfing, and is also a hub for various other water sports. The coastal walks around the beach are also breathtaking, both in terms of the views and the physical exertion required!

Back at the beach you can grab a bite to eat at the Beach Hut, or something a bit more fancy at Emily Scott restaurant.

Mawgan Porth

  • Great for: swimming, surfing, family days out
  • Parking: car park at the beach and in the village

Located a short drive to the north of Newquay just beyond Watergate Bay, Mawgan Porth is a fantastic all-round beach that brings many of the benefits of the beaches in Newquay but without the crowds.

The beach at Mawgan Porth sits in a little cove that opens out into a wide stretch of sand. High cliffs at either side provide great shelter, and the open exposure to incoming Atlantic swells brings in some great waves for surfing.

Mawgan Porth is a great option for a day out at the beach with a range of activities. The coastal path to the north is spectacular, with the opportunity to take the short walk up to the beauty spot at Bedruthan Steps.

If you’d like to stay somewhere near Newquay that provides some peace and quiet but is quick and easy to get into town, Mawgan Porth is perfect. The little village above the beach has some beautiful accommodation options, such as Mawgan Porth Apartments overlooking the sea.

Bedruthan Steps

  • Great for: walks, exploring caves, sunbathing
  • Parking: a National Trust car park is a short walk away

The last of our recommendations on beaches near Newquay is one of Cornwall’s most famous beauty spots. Bedruthan Steps is among the county’s most photographed places, and has become a highly popular location for weddings.

You can see why. The beach is punctuated with a series of towering rock stacks that create a breathtaking scene when viewed from the coastal path above. The name derives from a mythical giant called Bedruthan, who is said to have used the stacks as stepping stones.

Visits to the beach at Bedruthan Steps do come with a few caveats. Beach access is sometimes restricted by landslides, as was the case on our last visit. The tide provides a hazard too, as it comes in quickly and you can easily be cut off if you’re not careful. It’s wise to check the tide times before you set off.

Even if you’re not able to get onto the beach, the pathway above Bedruthan Steps provides one of the most stunning walks in Cornwall . We like to follow the path between here and Mawgan Porth and spend a little time at each beach, but the path is equally beautiful if you continue north past Bedruthan Steps in the other direction.

Let’s talk about the best beaches in Newquay, why you should visit them, how to get here, and where to stay.

Newquay, Cornwall, is a gorgeous beach town in the southwest of England . It was once a fishing port, then a famous party town that attracted university students and pre-wedding parties.

Now, it’s been transformed into a tranquil surfing town with lots of great food spots and sandy beaches that attract surfers and families looking for a chill holiday destination.

The town used to be more resort orientated, like Blackpool, so there are still areas that are a bit tatty around the edges, but many of Newquays’ neighborhoods have been reinvented and the natural landscape is some of the prettiest in the UK. For sure it has some of the most beautiful beaches on Cornwall’s north coast.

You might have heard that Newquay is the surf capital of Cornwall too, and that’s thanks to the town’s exposure to the west Atlantic swells.

Whether it’s your first time catching waves or you’re a pro, you’ll find beaches in Newquay with breaks to your taste – surfing in Newquay never disappoints.

Let’s get down to business, here are the best Newquay beaches to add to your itinerary.

The best beaches in Newquay, Cornwall

So, how many beaches are there in Newquay?

Overall, there are 15 main beaches in and around Newquay. None are more than a few miles outside of the town so they’re easily accessible by car or even on foot if you feel like taking a stroll.

As expected the Newquay nearby beaches are busier, but with no hassle, you can find a stretch of sand on a stunning beach to relax and disconnect.

For those looking for surfing in Newquay, then you are up for a feast. From mellow waves to powerful swells, you can choose the beach that matches your surf skills or where you can take surf lessons.

The details and info of all 15 Newquay beaches are listed below, choose your favorite ones.

Towan Beach in Newquay has cliffs surrounding it and a rock island in the middle of the sand with a house on top and a bridge connecting to the mainland. It is one fo the famous beaches in Newquay.

1 – Towan Beach

Towan Beach is right by Newquay’s town centre, earning it the nickname “town beach”. You can find the beach at the bottom of Beach Road nestled against the town’s harbour.

Cornwall can get pretty windy, so this sheltered golden sand beach is a real treat if you want to laze around. It’s one of the popular beaches among families as it’s just a stone throw away from town! The waves definitely aren’t fit for surfing though.

There’s a tall stack of rocks at the eastern end of the beach known as “Jago’s Island” that has a house built right on the top. Dating back to 1901, the house has been lived in by many prominent names, like Alexander Lodge who invented the spark plug, and visitors like Arthur Conan Doyle, who wrote Sherlock Holmes!

You’ll be glad to know you can rent the house out for your holiday if you’re looking for a little luxury this summer.

Another top attraction is the Blue Reef Aquarium, positioned right on the beachfront.

Great Western beach and red valerian (Centranthus ruber) in Newquay, Cornwall UK.

2 – Great Western Beach

Found below the cliffs where Newquay was built, this vast beach is great for beginner surfers and sunset strolls. The beach is sandy and pet-friendly too – the perfect place to build sandcastles.

Curiously, this Newquay beach was named after the Great Western Railway that ran a train service to the town between 1876 and 1960. Continuing this theme, the Great Western Hotel was built on the steep cliffs that rise over Great Western Beach.

Pretty much everything you need is on the beach, like toilets, a few cafes, deck chair and surfboard hire, and lifeguards (but they’re only around in peak season!).

Another handy thing about this beach is there are two car parks on either side of the nearby railway station, so you won’t have to walk far to get there.

Photo of beach views. It shows Tolcarne Beach and the town in the background.

3 – Tolcarne Beach

It takes two hundred steep to reach the golden sand of Tolcarne Beach, but it’s worth it! The beach is a little further round the rugged cliffs from the Great Western Beach, but still within the borders of Newquay.

The views of the harbor from Tolcarne are gorgeous, and the easy-going gentle waves make this one of the best beaches in Newquay to try catching a wave for the first time.

The beach also has a crazy golf court you can go and try out if you get tired of lazing under the sun, and there’s a cafe, toilets, and shop nearby too – what more could you ask for?

If you’re traveling with your furry friend bear in mind they won’t be allowed on the beach over the summer.

Newquay, Cornwall, UK - Surfers carrying their boards on Fistral Beach.

4 – Fistral Beach

Fistral is one of the most famous places to visit in Newquay and in the whole Cornwall region.

And you might ask, what is Fristal Beach famous for? The answer is simple: epic waves!

If you’ve been wondering which is the best surfing beach in Newquay, you’ve found it.

The waves are pretty huge here so it’s often divided into three areas: South Fistral, the main beach area, and Little Fistral (the most northern tip of the beach, which disappears for the most part when the tide is high).

Many surf competitions happen here which makes it one of the most famous beaches in town and in the UK.

If you want to stay at one of the most luxurious beach hotels in Newquay, then check into a room at The Headland Hotel & Spa , this gorgeous Victorian hotel overlooks Fistral Beach and will give you the best views of any crazy surfers.

There’s a car park, toilets, a few cafes, wetsuit, and surfboard hire, and seasonal lifeguards. Pets are allowed year-round too. It’s a little far out of town so I’d recommend driving here.

Sunset on Lusty Glaze Beach at Newquay in Cornwall.

5 – Lusty Glaze Beach

This little beach is tucked away between an amphitheater of cliffs, which makes it a more protected and secluded beach. Although, it’s still a popular spot and there’s an adventure center that offers everything from climbing to surfing so it gets busy.

If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush or you’ve been looking for a great family beach, you’ve found your spot.

At low tide, you can actually walk between Tolcarne Beach and Lusty Glaze Beach, but if you’re visiting at high tide, you’ll have to tackle the 368 steps down to the beach from the clifftop.

You can park your car at the top of the cliffs, but if you’re visiting in summer, it’s worth walking there from town as it gets busy. There’s a great restaurant on the beach, toilets, showers, and a little beach shop.

6 – Porth Beach

This narrow and long beach is great for families. There’s enough space for the kids to get out a kite and run around without getting in anyone’s way.

At low tide, it’s ideal for walks too, when rock pools full of life are left behind by the receding sea.

The coolest thing about Porth Beach though is the bridge that connects it to Porth Island where an ancient fort and the ruins of the old settlement, Trevelgue Head, await.

There aren’t many facilities on the beach itself, but there are a few cafes across the road. Bear in mind you can’t surf here in the summer season.

Porth Beach is just 5 minutes’ drive from Newquay or a half-hour walk.

7 – Whipsiderry Beach

One of the quieter beaches in Newquay, Whipsiderry has a rising rockface in the center of it, which is incredibly steep on one side but has loads of rock pools and little caves on the other.

At high tide, there’s not much beach to speak of, but once the tide goes out caves, like Cathedral Cavern, are uncovered along the vast stretch of sand.

One drawback is there aren’t any facilities nearby, but that’s probably why the beach is so quiet.

Crantock is one of the largest beaches in Newquay with soft sand. There are many people on the sand.

8 – Crantock Beach

Just 15 minutes’ drive from town and bordered by sand dunes that form the Rushy Green area, Crantock is one of the largest beaches in Newquay with soft sand – ideal for an afternoon walk with the dogs, this beach is one for those seeking solitude!

Apart from the gorgeous beach itself, there’s also a cave known as Piper’s Hole on the western end of the beach that has carvings that are over 100 years old.

Wildlife enthusiasts will love this spot as the cliffs rising above the beach are a haven for seabirds.

There’s parking and a small beach kiosk, but not much else.

Wide Empty Beach at Porth Joke in Cornwall, UK.

9 – Porth Joke Beach

Tucked away in a cove between rolling headlands, Porth Joke is just a little further north than Crantock Beach. Locals call it Polly Joke, and it’s just under 20 minutes’ drive from town.

When the town beaches get too cramped to be enjoyable, head over to Polly Joke for some tranquility.

There is a car park at West Pentire, but it’s still a little way from the beach itself so it’s not an ideal spot if you need to park right by the beach. There’s nothing in the way of facilities either, but it’s a dog-friendly beach in Newquay!

Photo of Watergate Bay in Cornwall, England, UK. It's a favored beach in Newquay for surfing, particularly for beginners.

10 – Watergate Bay Beach

Watergate Bay is popular with surf schools that bring vans full of novice surfers to tackle the waves for the first time. You can also go kite buggying and kitesurfing here.

It’s just 10 minutes’ drive from town, near Porth Joke Beach. There are loads of dining options, plenty of paid parking, toilets, and a shop. It’s wheelchair-accessible and dog friendly too.

Sunset over Holywell Bay Beach in Newquay, Cornwall, England UK

11 – Holywell Bay Beach

Hidden behind tall sand dunes, Holywell Bay is surrounded by rolling hills that drop onto the coastline and boasts a mile-long stretch of golden sand.

The beach got its name thanks to the cave at the northern end of the beach that has unusual rock formations that fill up like miniature wells at low tide.

It’s a little out of town (about fifteen minutes’ drive), but that’s part of its charm. This popular family beach is the perfect setting for fun and relaxation. Bear in mind it can get busy though!

You can park in the little town by the beach, also called Holywell, and as it’s right by the beach you can head into town if you need anything whilst you’re here.

Beach at Mawgan Porth in Cornwall, UK. Huge cliffs in the background and crystal clear sea.

12 – Mawgan Porth Beach

Easy-going and cute, Mawgan Porth is ideal for a chill beach day in Newquay. There are some short walking routes along the cliffs that rise above the beach too.

It’s got everything you need in terms of facilities, and there are lots of rental cottages around the edge of the beach – in case you want to stay just meters away from the sea!

Mawgan Porth is its own little town outside of Newquay itself, but this more secluded and tranquil spot with a beach that offers great surf is no bad holiday option. Plus, it’s just a 15 minutes’ drive away from Newquay!

Perranporth Beaches in Newquay. Long stretches of sand and great waves.

13 – Perranporth Beach

At low tide, Perranporth and Penhale Sands join together and leave three miles of glistening sand exposed. There are some pretty epic swells, so if you’re in Cornwall to surf keep an eye on the conditions at Perranporth.

Various cliff formations tower over the golden sand, leaving caves that were once frequented by smugglers open for exploration. Make sure to check out the natural saltwater pool and stunning views on top of Chapel Rock before you go.

Situated on the edge of the quaint seaside town of the same name, Perranporth Beach is located 20 minutes’ drive away from Newquay.

Newquay Harbour by Visit Newquay. The pier with small fishing boats and the town in the background.

14 – Newquay Harbour Beach

Cute and quaint, Newquay Harbour gave the town, once known as Towan Blystra, its new name! Even if you decide not to jump into the sea, it’s worth taking a stroll and snapping pictures of this enchanting spot.

Watching the little fishing boats bob up and down to a backdrop of orange and pink hues at sunset is one of the most relaxing things to do in Newquay.

There’s a small patch of sand at the edge of the harbor, and the tranquil nature of the waves rolling in makes it a perfect spot for toddlers to splash around in, or for paddle boarding.

Some of the nicest restaurants in Newquay line the harbor, so come and enjoy evening drinks with the best town views.

Gannel Estuary Beach in Newquay is a great place to go kayaking and canoeing. The photo is in low tide, you can see a boat stop in the middle of teh water stream.

15 – Gannel Estuary Beach

A great place to go kayaking or canoeing, the beach is also accessible by horse, bike and foot. Be careful about swimming though, as the estuary has strong currents that can be unpredictable.

It used to be an important arrival point by sea, and the old boatyards and moorings where ships bringing in coal and timber once arrived give Gannel a nostalgic feeling.

Where to stay in Newquay Beaches

Here’s a reliable list of hotels in Newquay for every budget! Choose the one that suits your budget and style, and for sure from your accommodation, you will be able to visit all the beaches in Newquay we mentioned above.

Luxury Hotels in Newquay

The Headland Hotel and Spa situated on the cliffside above the iconic Fistral Beach has gorgeous outdoor swimming pools, a spa to relax in, rooms with sea views, a surf school, and its own golf course.

Another great option is the Fistral Beach Hotel and Spa which also overlooks Fistral Beach. It’s the only adults-only hotel in the area so it promises relaxation and intimacy. Plus, the town center of Newquay is just a mile away.

Mid-range Hotels in Newquay

The White House Hotel has quirky and unique rooms with sea views. It’s situated right in the heart of Newquay, just a five-minute walk from Towan Beach and on the doorstep to some of the best restaurants and bars.

On the other hand, there’s the grand but rather affordable Legacy Hotel Victoria , which has an indoor pool with sea views, old-fashioned rooms, and outdoor areas. It’s right by the Railway Station and shops and breakfast is included.

Just minutes walk away from the old Great Western Railway Station, the Great Western Hotel rises above the beach of the same name. It boasts a cliff-top terrace and a perfect location.

Looking for something more central? Then the Tregella Guest House will be right down your alley. Simple and sweet, this Edwardian house is minutes away from the town center but still has cozy rooms with sea views. Another plus? Breakfast is included.

Wide view of Fistral Beach in Newquay, Cornwall viewed from the grassy dunes on a clear, sunny day.

How to get to Newquay beaches and around

Newquay Airport is a little far out of town, and from there you’d need to rent a car to get to town anyway so unless you’re coming to Newquay from abroad, I’d recommend getting a bus or train there or driving if that’s an option.

You can arrive via train to the Newquay Train Station, or take a National Express coach to Newquay’s Bus Station.

If you want to stay in the town and visit only the nearest beaches, you can explore Newquay on foot. Some of the beaches further afield though, like Perranporth and Mawgan Porth require a car, especially if you’re carrying a surfboard.

Public transport is limited in rural areas, so it’s best to rent a car if you don’t want to waste your valuable beach time.
