Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band Finally Set to Return to the Road This Spring

By Jon Blistein

Jon Blistein

After two delays, Ringo Starr will finally launch his tour with his All Starr Band this spring.

The trek is set to launch with two nights at the Casino Rama in Rama, Ontario, May 27 and 28. From there, Starr will make his way around the East Coast — including three nights at the Beacon Theatre in New York City — then down south. The run wraps on June 26 at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, Florida.

Tickets for all shows are on sale now. Complete information is available on Starr’s website .

For the 2022 tour, the All Starr Band lineup will boast regulars Steve Lukather, Colin Hay, Warren Ham, Gregg Bissonette, and Hamish Stuart, while the group will also welcome back previous collaborator Edgar Winter. Starr and Co. were originally slated to tour in 2020 and 2021 , although both runs were postponed because of the pandemic.

“I can’t wait to get back out on the road and play,” Starr said in a statement. “This is the longest I’ve been off the road in years — up until 2020 I was touring every year with the All Starrs — and I’ve really missed it. Making music in the studio has been great, and it certainly saved me during the pandemic, but nothing beats playing live with great musicians in front of an audience. I love my fans and they love me and it’s going to be wonderful to be peace and loving and playing for them again.”

Starr has kept busy during the pandemic, releasing two EPs last year , Zoom In and Change the World . He also taught his own MasterClass course , released a retrospective book, Ringo Rocks: 30 Years of the All Starrs 1989 – 2019 , and has another book on the way, Lifted : Fab Images and Memories In My Life with the Beatles From Across The Universe .

In June, Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band postponed the last 12 concerts of the first leg of their 2022 North American tour after two members — Edgar Winter and Toto ‘s Steve Lukather — tested positive for COVID-19. Now, the group is ready to return to the road.

The ex- Beatles drummer and his star-studded group kick off their trek’s second leg on Monday, September 5 in Lenox, Massachusetts. The outing begins with the rescheduled dates and then runs into the All Starr Band’s 20 originally announced fall shows.

The tour leg begins with a series of shows in the Eastern U.S. then makes a bunch of stops at venues in Canada and the Northern U.S. as it works its way west across the continent. The trek winds down with concerts in Washington, Oregon and California, with the final stateside performance scheduled for October 16 at the famed Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. Ringo and the All Starrs also will play an October 19-20 engagement in Mexico City.

In addition to Winter and Lukather, the current All Starr Band features Men at Work frontman Colin Hay , Average White Band bassist Hamish Stuart , Toto multi-instrumentalist Warren Ham and acclaimed session drummer Gregg Bissonette .

During the tour, Ringo will release the latest in a series of EPs that he’s been putting together since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, a four-track collection titled EP3 . The new recording, which can be pre-ordered now, will be released digitally and on CD September 16. A limited-edition blue cassette and 10-inch vinyl-disc version will follow on November 18.

EP3 includes contributions from Lukather, Toto lead singer Joseph Williams , hit-making producer and songwriter Linda Perry , sax player Dave Koz and more.

Ringo will bring Starr power to PPAC on June 12

The Beatles still loom large in the musical world more than 50 years after John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr called it a day in 1970. Everyone knows at least one Beatles song, and you can hear their harmonies and song structures being adopted by a variety of acts.

Surviving members McCartney and Starr are still rocking their solo careers, with Ringo as the headliner of his All Starr Band , which will perform in a sold-out show at Providence Performing Arts Center on June 12.

The band has had a fluctuating lineup since its first incarnation in 1989, with Starr on drums. He’s currently being joined by Toto’s Steve Lukather and Average White Band’s Hamish Stuart on guitar, bass and vocals, Men At Work’s Colin Hay on guitar and vocals, Edgar Winter on keyboards and saxophone, Gregg Bissonette on drums and trumpet, and Warren Ham on saxophone and other instruments.

What did Ringo Starr think of the Disney+ documentary 'Get Back'?

Ahead of their current tour, Starr and the rest of the band held a news conference on May 26 that was both virtual and in person at Casino Rama in Rama, Ontario. After each member reflected on how much they'd missed playing live for 2½ years because of the pandemic, Starr was asked about "Get Back," the 2021 Disney+ documentary on The Beatles, and whether it would bring a different audience due to its critical acclaim.

“I’m sure it’ll show some interest, but we all have our core fans. They’ll be coming," Starr said. "What I’ve noticed with the All Starrs is when we first started, a lot of the audience was sort of my age, and over the years it’s gotten younger. They’ve seen less of me at that age, and the kids are coming in. I thought the documentary was so great, and Peter Jackson did a great job. I was a bit stunned at first, because I thought it was going to be two hours. It’s six hours, but it’s easy to watch.”

A few minutes later, Winter was asked about his album "Brother Johnny" that he released in February in tribute to his brother, blues legend Johnny Winter, who died in 2014. Starr is featured on one track, a rendition of “Stranger,” originally written by Johnny.

RI Best: 22 can't miss food and drink adventures for summer 2022

“It was very odd the way the whole thing came up,” Winter said. “I was going to do ‘Johnny B. Goode’, I used to sing it with Johnny, and [Joe Walsh] said ‘That’s traditional Chuck Berry. I don’t know what I could bring to that. What else have you got?’ There’s this really sensitive ballad Johnny wrote that’s very uncharacteristic of anything that he would ever do, and Joe [Walsh] picked that song. He did a very beautiful job playing guitar, and I had thought from the very beginning about getting Ringo to play on something. Finally, I thought, ‘Well, Joe is on this track, Ringo is married to the lovely Barbara Bach, and her sister Marjorie is married to Joe, so they’re brothers-in-law.”

Dig in: Your 2022 guide to great summer food in RI, including can't-miss restaurants

“I thought since Joe’s on this track, it would be great to have them together, and I worked up the nerve to ask him,” Winter added. “I called him up and he said, “Edgar, I’ll do it for you.” It just touched my heart. Since it’s a ballad, it gave him a chance to do all those classic Ringo fills, and then we got Michael McDonald to do a beautiful vocal. Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh and Michael McDonald are a pretty interesting group of people.”

Does Ringo have any plans to retire?

Starr was asked about the success and longevity of his career and what drives him to continue making new music. He said that the feeling that made him want to play music as a teenager has never faded.

“I think I was inspired at 13, and that has never left me,” Starr said. “The dream, the joy, and then I started playing. I only wanted to be a drummer. Then I got a kit of drums and I was in some really good bands. It’s still there. ... My mother had this great line. We were in some Liverpool bands, going out and playing down home, and she said, ‘You know what, son? I always feel you’re at your happiest when you’re playing,’ and deep inside, I am.”

“I just love it. Now I’m playing with these guys, and it’s just great,” he added. “... People say ‘What about retirement?’ Well, I’m a musician, I don’t have to retire. Today Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band shared the updated and revised itinerary for their tour dates set for September, which now includes all 12 of the rescheduled dates they had to postpone after Edgar Winter and Steve Lukather tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, June 7, during the second of three sold-out shows at New York’s Beacon Theater.

When the shows were canceled Starr shared a statement that read, “We were having so much fun playing again and it was disappointing to have to stop. But we were able to reschedule these shows and add them to our Fall tour – and so as the song goes – I’ll see you in September! Peace and love, Ringo.”

The ensemble which is comprised of Starr along with Steve Lukather, Colin Hay, Warren Ham, Gregg Bissonette, Hamish Stuart and Edgar Winter will now kick their tour off at Tanglewood in Lenox, Mass. on Sept. 5. They’ll continue to traverse North America until their shows in Mexico City, Mexico on Oct. 20.

Additionally, on July 7 Starr will welcome friends and fans around the world to join him for his annual Peace and Love birthday celebration, where he invites everyone everywhere to say, post or even just think  Peace and Love  at Noon their local time. Starting in Australia, and New Zealand and ending in Hawaii, Starr hopes to wrap the Earth in a wave of peace and love. People are already organizing local events, and details and live streams from the gatherings will soon be available on Ringo’s Facebook page.

Talk about a fab time warp!

It was 50 years ago today — well, this year — that Ringo Starr recorded the John Lennon-penned song, “I’m The Greatest,” for his 1973 album, “Ringo.” It re-teamed the avuncular drummer and vocalist with Lennon and George Harrison, sparking rumors of a Beatles’ reunion that never came to pass.

Ringo Starr

Ringo Starr talks drums, The Beatles, bouncing back from COVID and rocking on in his 80s

Busier than ever, the two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Famer has two 2023 concert tours set and plans to release three EPs this year alone. ‘We’re off and running!’ he says

May 14, 2023

It was 50 years later — on Friday night — that Starr performed “I’m the Greatest,” nine numbers into his 2023 tour-opening concert at Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula, an hour north of San Diego. And it was almost impossible not to smile when the legendary drummer sang the lines: “Now I’m only thirty-two / And all I wanna do is boogaloo!”

Hearing Starr, now a spry 82, enthusiastically deliver those lines half a century later is a kick. Ditto the fact he did so during a 126-minute concert that saw him on stage for all but two of the 24 songs performed — let alone just seven months after he and his All-Starr Band had to cut short their 2022 fall tour when he contracted COVID, not once, but twice last October.

Starr, still as slender as in his days with The Beatles in the 1960s, was well aware a half century had passed between his recording of “I’m The Greatest” and Friday’s concert.

“Fifty years from now, you’ll say: ‘Yeah, I saw him!” he told the sold-out crowd of 3,100. He then launched into his next selection, the 1966 Beatles’ favorite, “Yellow Submarine.”

A few minutes earlier, while introducing “Boys” — the 1960 hit by The Shirelles that Starr sang on The Beatles’ 1963 debut album — he said: “I’m going to do a song for you now from before most of you were born.”

Guitarist Steve Lukather and Ringo Starr, May 19, 2022, at Pechanga

There were some Millennials and Gen Z-ers in the audience, including a young woman in front of me who danced joyously during much of the concert. But the majority appeared to be graying baby-boomers who grew up in the 1960s when The Beatles were irrevocably transforming music and pop culture — and Starr was the most famous young rock drummer on the planet.

The passing of time also inspired quips at Pechanga from some of the members of his All-Starr Band, the 15th iteration of the group he has led since its inception in 1989.

“Do you remember 1976? What was it like?” Average White Band co-founder Hamish Stuart, 73, asked the audience as he led the All-Starrs — minus Starr — into a percolating version of AWB’s mid-1970s hit, “Cut the Cake.”

Toto guitarist Steve Lukather, now in his second decade with Starr, introduced “Hold the Line” as: “A song from when I was 20 years old — in 1927.” Explaining why his until recently full head of black hair is now white, Lukather told the audience: “At 65, you just say ‘F--- it!’ “

Levity aside, Starr and his six band mates didn’t kid around when it came to the music.

As in previous years, their repertoire mixed chestnuts from The Beatles’ songbook and Starr’s solo career with hits by the All-Starrs, whose other members include Edgar Winter and Men At Work’s Colin Hay. The lineup was completed by former David Lee Roth drum dynamo Greg Bissonette and former Toto and Kansas utility player Warren Ham, a quadruple-threat on saxophone, percussion, harmonica and vocals.

The concert opened with a spunky version of the 1957 Carl Perkins’ rockabilly gem, “Matchbox,” and concluded with a mashup of The Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends” and the Plastic Ono Band’s “Give Peace a Chance.”

Ringo Starr, Hamish Stuart and Greg Bissonette at Pechanga Resort Casino, May 19, 2023

Starr alternated between enthusiastically singing at the front of the stage and delivering rock-solid drumming from a riser farther back. On several songs — including “Boys” and “I Wanna Be Your Man” — he sang while he drummed, just as he did all those years ago in the 1960s with The Beatles.

Stuart, who was a member of Paul McCartney’s band from 1988 to 1994, had the strongest voice of anyone in this edition of the All-Starrs.

Multi-instrumentalist Ham ably hit the high notes on Toto’s “Africa” and “Rosanna,” both of which featured the fleet-fingered Lukather as the nominal lead singer. Ham teamed with keyboardist and singer Winter for the rousing twin sax parts on Average White Band’s “Pick Up the Pieces” and “Cut the Cake,” the latter of which included a deft quote from the darting brass lines in Tower of Power’s “Down to the Night Club.”

The instrumental highlight of the night came during an extended, 12-minute rendition of the Edgar Winter Group’s 1972 hit, “Frankenstein.”

With Winter providing support on timbales, Bissonette delivered a dazzling solo that found him quoting the trademark drum parts from — among others — The Beatles’ “Day Tripper,” Led Zeppelin’s “Rock ‘n’ Roll” and “Immigrant Song,” the Rolling Stones’ “Honky Tonk Women” and the 1937 Gene Krupa/Benny Goodman landmark, “Sing, Sing, Sing.”

The show lagged a bit near the end with back-to-back readings of Men At Work’s “Who Can It Be Now” and Toto’s “Hold the Line” that overstayed their welcome.

But the closing volley of Starr’s “Photograph,” the Buck Owens-cum-Beatles romp “Act Naturally” and the mashup of “With a Little Help From My Friends” and “Give Peace a Chance” brought the night to a rousing conclusion. And watching Starr cap off the evening doing jumping jacks — while flashing the peace sign with both hands and smiling from ear to ear — well, that never gets old.

Ringo Starr's All Starr Band to kick off 2022 tour in Rama, Canada; Edgar Winter rejoins lineup

ringo starr tour 2022 opening act

Ringo Starr has unveiled updated plans for his 2022 North American tour with his All Starr Band that include a newly confirmed kickoff date and a lineup change.

The latest All Starr Band trek, which has been postponed twice since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020, will get underway with a just announced May 27-28 engagement at Casino Rama in Rama, Canada.

This will mark the fifth time that Ringo and the All Starrs will begin a tour at the Canadian venue, after 2001, 2003, 2006 and 2014.

The group's 2022 itinerary also features a new concert in Canandaigua, New York, on May 30 and a second show in Atlanta on June 21, which joins a previously announced June 22 Atlanta gig. In addition, previously confirmed concerts on May 31 in Asbury Park, New Jersey; June 3 in Worcester, Massachusetts; and June 21 in Richmond, Virginia, are no longer on the All Starr Band's schedule.

As for the lineup change, veteran rocker Edgar Winter will be rejoining the group in place of founding Santana and Journey singer/keyboardist Gregg Rolie , who had played with the All Starrs since 2012. Winter previously was a member of the All Starr Band from 2006 to 2011.

The rest of Ringo's All Starr Band remains the same -- Toto guitarist Steve Lukather , Men at Work frontman Colin Hay and former Average White Band guitarist/bassist Hamish Stuart , as well as sax player/percussionist Warren Ham and drummer Gregg Bissonette .

"I can't wait to get back out on the road and play," says Ringo. "This is the longest I've been off the road in years -- up until 2020 I was touring every year with the All Starrs -- and I've really missed it."

Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band bring Beatles hits and more to Pittsburgh

Paul Guggenheimer

Ringo Starr may not be everyone’s favorite Beatle, but an evening spent under the same roof with any Beatle has to be considered time well spent.

And so it was for a far less than capacity, but enthusiastic, crowd at PPG Paints Arena Saturday night as the former Beatles drummer and his All-Starr Band finally got to play a Pittsburgh concert that was postponed three times due to the pandemic.

It was well worth the wait.

It was also fitting that Starr’s return to Pittsburgh happened in September, the month that the Beatles played their one and only Pittsburgh show nearly 58 years ago to the day on Sept. 14, 1964, at the old Civic Arena, a stone’s throw away.

A good portion of the mostly older crowd looked the way disapproving parents did back then. Instead, the baby boomers in attendance brought their children and grandchildren with them, young kids likely up past their bedtimes and teenagers as well.

Born Richard Starkey, Ringo is the oldest Beatle at 82. (John Lennon, who was assassinated in 1980, would have turned 82 this October. Paul McCartney turned 80 last June. George Harrison, who died of cancer in 2001, would have turned 80 next year.)

But Ringo, wearing a black blazer with splashes of red down the front and black pants with red stripes down the sides, neither sounded nor moved like an 82-year-old. His trademark deep, warm, throaty voice sounded the way it always has, a little rough around the edges but as strong as ever, especially on up-tempo early Beatles rockers like “Matchbox,” “I Wanna Be Your Man” and “Boys.” The latter is a song he said “I’ve done at every live gig I’ve ever done.”

He may have been exaggerating, but he wasn’t far off. At the height of Beatlemania, “Boys” was the song Ringo performed regularly in concert. And it was just as impressive Saturday as he proved he hadn’t lost the knack for singing lead vocals and playing the drums simultaneously.

With Gregg Bissonette drumming side by side with Ringo, Starr was able to spend equal parts of the show back behind his kit and front and center at the mic.

Anyone wanting to hear Beatle songs on which Ringo sang the lead likely did not come away disappointed. He didn’t perform all of them but managed to work in favorites like “Yellow Submarine,” during which Starr ad-libbed “Where are we captain? Oh, we’re going to Pittsburgh!”

There was also “Octopus’s Garden,” “With a Little Help From My Friends,“ “Act Naturally” and “What Goes On,” the only Beatles song credited to Lennon-McCartney and Starkey.

“I told them, ‘I think it should be Ringo, Paul and John’ and they looked me in the eye and said, ‘Sod off,’ ” Starr told the crowd. The patrons were clearly getting a kick out of hearing a behind-the-scenes Beatles story straight from one of the Fab Four himself.

Starr is not only a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer for what he brought to the Beatles but his solo work as well. Songs like “It Don’t Come Easy,” “Back Off Boogaloo” and “Photograph” were given the All-Starr treatment as he demonstrated his evolution as a songwriter.

Of course, Ringo’s fans knew the words to the songs and did not hesitate to sing along when he prompted them. They spent the evening lavishing so much love and affection on Starr that he was clearly moved by their appreciation.

“Man, what a crowd! I should move here,” he said.

Sorry Bethany I pulled up the wrong song. That one was "Matchbox" and it did sound great. But for your enjoyment, here's "It Don't Come Easy." https://t.co/OSztLPEJKN pic.twitter.com/soX4aqmkN2 — Paul Guggenheimer (@PGuggenheimer) September 11, 2022

But it wasn’t just Ringo the crowd was enamored with, as his bandmates more than lived up to their all-star billing. It didn’t hurt that they came from great bands themselves.

They included guitarist and singer Colin Hay, who was lead vocalist for the Australian ‘80s band Men at Work, guitarist and singer Hamish Stuart, lead vocalist for the Scottish funk and R&B group The Average White Band, and guitarist and singer Steve Lukather, founding member of Toto.

Rounding out the All-Starrs were saxophone, percussion and keyboard player Warren Ham and last but certainly not least, keyboard and saxophone player Edgar Winter, who brought the house down with a white-hot version of his ’70s hit “Frankenstein.” It might have gone down as the best song of the night had it not been for the energy of Starr’s grand finale, “With a Little Help From My Friends.”

Say what you want about Joe Cocker’s cover version, but this classic “Sgt. Pepper” song belongs to Ringo. Clearly he loves singing it and jumped up and down at the front of the stage with a little boy’s enthusiasm as the All Starrs jammed away and the crowd likely wondered, “How can this guy be 82 years old?” Lukather, Stuart and Hay provided exquisite three-part Beatles harmony and asked the call and response questions such as “Do you neeeeed anybody?”

The support went both ways as Starr had fun banging out a funky beat behind Stuart on a cover version of The Average White Band’s breakthrough hit “Pick Up the Pieces,” as well as Colin Hay’s cover of Men at Work’s smash hit “Down Under.”

As much fun as it was for the fans to hear those songs, they might have wished for a little more Ringo. Did they really need to be stuck with a cover of a middling song lke Toto’s “Rosanna”? Though it did come with a smoldering Lukather guitar solo, did it also come at the expense of a heartfelt song like “Good Night,” a sweetly sentimental song Ringo recorded for the “White Album” but left off of Saturday’s playlist? For this Beatles fan, it was a glaring omission.

Winter performed a fine cover of Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode,” which he dedicated to his late brother Johnny Winter. But how about another Beatles cover that shows off Ringo’s pioneering drumming style, something like “Ticket To Ride”? John Lennon referred to it as “the first heavy metal record.” Lennon wouldn’t have even considered making such a claim were it not for the heavy drums played by Ringo on that tune.

Judging from the opening riffs of songs like “Day Tripper,” the All-Starrs were teasing the crowd with, they’re probably itching to cover another Beatles song. How cool would it have been for the folks to hear that ‘Ba Boom bop bop boom bah, Ba Boom bop bop boom bah’ “Ticket to Ride” drum beat live?

Perhaps Ringo thinks it would be a sacrilegious thing to do.

Other questions that have come up: Why was there no video feed on the screen behind the stage? Maybe Starr figured “The Beatles never had video, so let’s go old school.”

Also, why was there no encore? After “With a Little Help From My Friends,” Ringo left the stage and the remaining band members did a version of “Give Peace a Chance” and that was it. There was no return to the stage.

Also, there was surprisingly no mention of Queen Elizabeth’s death. In 1965, Starr and the other Beatles first met her when they were appointed Members of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

But these things did not seriously detract from an otherwise highly entertaining and memorable show by a dynamic 82-year-old legend.

In many ways, after having an appendectomy at age 6 that caused him to contract peritonitis, surviving a childhood bout with tuberculosis, and overcoming alcoholism and drug addiction as an adult, it’s nothing short of a miracle that Ringo Starr is still with us.

Someday, it will come to an end, of course, but after his and his band’s performance in Pittsburgh on Saturday night, it feels like he could go on forever. Yeah, Yeah, Yeah.
