Where to stay, eat, and play in Florida’s Sweetest Spot for family fun in the sun.

When you think of vacationing in Central Florida, it evokes images of a certain mouse who lives in “the most magical place on earth”. But if you’re looking for a family getaway that lets you escape the crowds, have epic outdoor adventures, enjoy incredible eats and still fit in a theme park or two, Central Florida ’s Polk County is the place to go.

Located conveniently between Orlando and Tampa, the region known as Florida’s Sweetest Spot offers endless memory-making opportunities for visitors of every age. We created this comprehensive guide to highlight some of the best family-friendly experiences you can only find in this part of the Sunshine State.

Westgate River Ranch Resort

Where to stay

One great thing about Central Florida is that it offers a variety of vacation accommodations to suit every family’s size and style.

Legoland 01

Want to stay in the center of the theme park action? The Pirate Island Hotel is the way to go. Just a 3-minute walk from the LEGOLAND Florida Resort , this pirate-themed hotel offers whimsical rooms featuring separate kid’s sleeping areas with bunk beds and daily in-room LEGOⓇ treasure hunts. With free breakfast daily, a heated outdoor pool, mini-golf and free LEGOⓇ building workshops on-site, there’s so much to enjoy before your little swashbucklers even step foot in the theme park.

Westgate 03

For an authentic dude ranch experience, hunker down at the Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo , located in one of the few untouched pieces of Florida wilderness. This famous ranch and luxury glamping (fancy camping!) resort features rustic cowboy-themed accommodations and tons of family-friendly activities like horseback riding, a Saturday night rodeo, and a petting farm.

Looking for more space, a full kitchen or even a private pool? A vacation rental house in Central Florida can be your home away from home. Balmoral Resort Florida is known for high-quality houses in a tranquil location that features a water park and restaurant, less than 20 minutes from LEGOLAND, Peppa Pig Theme Park, and Bok Tower Gardens. Want a Hollywood-style home that can fit the whole family and then some? Orlando Attraction Homes, like the name suggests, are attractions in themselves, featuring amazing amenities like a water slide, robotic butler, movie theater, or basketball court with up to 20-bedrooms.

Camp Margaritaville 1

Making the trip to Central Florida RV-style? Drive right into Camp Margaritaville and grab a cheeseburger in Paradise. With over 300 oversized RV sites boasting scenic views of Lake Myrtle, TripAdvisor Member Kim O gushed that there is “plenty to do for kids, dogs and adults. Activities all day and music at night. Staff is amazing and friendly. A true vacation spot.” Another great RV resort is Canopy Oaks , which offers 400 fully landscaped RV sites that includes a clubhouse, restaurants, fishing, and even dog walking for your four-legged family members.

Want to get the family closer to nature? Set up camp at Orlando Southwest KOA Holiday to be close to all of Central Florida’s major theme parks, or opt for an African-like safari experience on the 260-acre grounds of Safari Wilderness , where a tent is ready and waiting for you at their base camp.

The hardest part about planning a trip to Central Florida? Deciding between all the great kid-friendly experiences at your disposal. Here are some of our favorites that will have your little ones begging for you to stay just a little bit longer.

Peppa Park

No family excursion to Central Florida is complete without a visit to LEGOLAND Florida Resor t. Built for families with kids ages 2 to 12, this 150-acre theme park consists of more than 50 rides and LEGOⓇ activities plus an awesome water park, with three unique places to stay on site. LEGOLAND is just steps away from the world’s first Peppa Pig Theme Park , where your little piggies will squeal with delight as they enjoy the ultimate day on Peppa-themed rides, playscapes and water areas complete with “muddy puddles”.

Boa

Just 11-miles away from LEGOLAND, Boa Tower Gardens is a national historic landmark with two hiking trails and 50-acres of gardens, including a children’s garden with water features, a stage for little performers, and music area. Plan your trip around the musical show at the Singing Tower carillon, which happens at 1pm and 3pm daily.

Another great family spot is urban oasis Bonnet Springs Park . Dogs are welcome, admission is free, and highlights include an adventure playground that encourages children’s sense of discovery and imagination, a 500-square foot kid’s treehouse, open-air concerts, and more. Located inside the park, the Florida Children’s Museum offers two floors of interactive exhibits, both indoors and outdoors, where children can spend hours delving into science, discovery, and play.

Safari

Not only is Safari Wilderness a unique place to stay, it’s a multi-habitat preserve home to a herds of zebras, fainting goats, ostriches, llamas, lemurs, and so much more. Expert guides will take your family up close and personal to wildlife on custom safari vehicles or even on a camel’s back! Wilderness Safari is a genuine farm, so there are no crowds or lines. Tripadvisor Member Nana gave it an excellent rating, saying, “We got to feed and pet so many different animals. The kids will always remember this special day.”

Your trip to Central Florida should include at least one u-pick experience. We recommend family farm Ridge Island Groves , where the kids will have a blast picking oranges, peaches or blueberries, depending what is in season. Afterwards, cool off with a fresh-squeezed juice or citrus ice cream. Yum!

Where to eat

There’s no shortage of family-friendly restaurants in Central Florida. Both kids and adults will find something they love, whether it’s a freshly-baked pastry for breakfast or a finger-licking good BBQ dinner. Below is just a taste of some of the best eateries in the area that will satisfy even the most picky of eaters.

Born & Bread

On Wednesday and Saturday mornings, head to Born & Bread Bakehouse , a nationally recognized bakery that serves up sweet and savory treats baked fresh in-house. Don’t let the line deter you--it moves quickly, so the whole family will be enjoying their delicious pastries in no time.

If you’re looking for Sunday brunch, Nutwood serves up seasonal fare like chicken and waffles and malted pancakes in a cozy setting. Tripadvisor Member RXYK said, “the staff was friendly and welcoming to our whole family”. Another great brunch option is Fire Eatery & Bar , a steakhouse with a patio that features live music the kids will love dancing to. Both places also serve lunch and dinner.

For a cool, retro-style experience, Andy’s Igloo & Drive-In Restaurant serves up American classics like hamburgers and hot dogs in a fun setting. We recommend arriving a little before lunch or dinner time, and don’t forget to save room for their delicious ice cream.

nineteen 61

In the mood for southern food? Your family will love the smoked ribs, mac and cheese and banana pudding at Peebles BBQ . You can even order take-out by the pound! For Latin-inspired cuisine, family-owned Nineteen 61 is an upscale eatery that offers indoor and outdoor seating. Courts915 said it was “definitely one of the best meals I’ve had in a long time!” And it’s no surprise that Mister Fish is the place to go for seafood, serving up fish and chips and sandwiches in a casual atmosphere.
