You know one of the fun parts about traveling? Discovering! You get to try out new cuisines, explore the local markets, and gasp at all the city’s wonders. I love sightseeing and touring different cities. I find the best way to do this is by road.

But there’s a part of sightseeing I don’t anticipate as much. Yup, The planning. You know... where to go, the most direct route to follow, how much time to spend at each stop, and so on.

But how do you get around once you get to your destination? Trains or buses, right? Bus services like  Busbud  and  Megabus  usually come in handy to explore cities.

In this article, I’ll be reviewing Big Bus Tours, which claims to offer exceptional guided tours with insider access to the world’s top destinations. Still skeptical? That’s why I’m here to help share the important details so that you can make an informed decision!

Big bus tours place a lot of emphasis on impeccable service, comfort, convenience, and insider access. Passengers are taken on guided tours of the world’s most fascinating destinations.

Big Bus Tours has a fascinating origin story. The company started in 2011 after 2 sightseeing businesses. One was the Big Bus Company Ltd (London-based), and the second was Les Cars Rouges (Paris-based).

These businesses merged with their 20+ years of experience to create a modern bus tour brand.

Starting with just 3 buses, Big Bus Tours, a family-run company, has hundreds of buses in its fleet that help 4 million tourists explore the world every year.

So now, whether you’re interested in exploring bustling cities, natural wonders, or historical landmarks, Big Bus Tours has something for everyone!

Procedure To Book A Ticket On Big Bus Tours

Which Cities Have Big Bus Tours?

Big Bus Tours operates globally. You can find them in:

  • Europe: London,  Vienna , Paris, Budapest, Rome, Istanbul, Dublin, Berlin, Munich
  • America:  New York , Chicago, LA, Miami, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Washington DC, Las Vegas
  • Asia-Pacific: Sydney,  Hong Kong , Darwin, Singapore
  • Middle-East:  Dubai , Abu Dhabi, Muscat

You can avail this service in some of the world’s most iconic cities and locations. The only question is, where to, first?

Does Big Bus Tours Go Both Ways?

Yes, it goes both ways. Big Bus Tours has this exciting hop-on, hop-off policy that allows you to explore the city without sticking to guided tours.

Like, in New York, you can hop on at any of the Big Bus  stops  if you wish to see all the exciting landmarks of New York. You can hop off any time if you want to explore more on foot.

Similarly, you’ll find that Big Bus Tours Chicago, Big Bus Tours London, and Big Bus Tours Las Vegas are also very flexible and popular among tourists and sightseers.

How Much Does a Big Bus Tour Cost?

Big Bus has a variety of packages for different destinations, and price varies based on the city, route, and stops. Still, they’re much more affordable than any private transport.

How to Book a Big Bus Tours Ticket

Booking a ticket with Big Bus Tours is a simple process. You can book your ticket online through its official website or a third-party website. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you book your ticket:

  • Visit the official  Big Bus Tours website  or an authentic third-party website.
  • Select the city you want to tour and the package that best suits your needs.
  • Choose the date and time you want to start your tour.
  • Enter the number of tickets you need and the names of the passengers.
  • Review your booking details and make sure everything is correct.
  • Choose your payment method and enter your payment details.
  • Review your payment details and confirm the booking.
  • You’ll receive a confirmation email with all the details of your booking.

Depending on your travel plans and budget, you can choose between Classic, Premium, Deluxe, and Night Tour Tickets.

It’s vital to book your ticket in advance to ensure it’s available, especially during peak seasons. You can also save yourself some money and a lot of hassle by booking your ticket online instead of purchasing it on the day of the tour.

When you arrive for your tour, present your confirmation email on your phone or a hard copy of your booking details to board the bus.

Can You Buy A Hop On Hop Off Ticket At The Bus?

You can get your ticket through the on-street Big Bus Tours staff members or on-spot when you board the bus. They accept cards and cash!

What I Don’t Love About Big Bus Tours

As popular as it is, the Big Bus Tour can get pretty crowded, which can be a bummer if your vacation is all about relaxing. The noise, hustle, and bustle tend to build up during peak tourist season.

Also, if you’re in London, it does tend to rain quite often. Despite using umbrellas and free ponchos, the top level of the bus gets wet and uncomfortable. Most people then move to the lower levels. As you can imagine, it gets jam-packed, and you can hardly see anything outside.

Big Bus Tours: Feature Highlights!

Big Bus Tours offers a variety of features to enhance the sightseeing experience for its customers:

Open-Top Double-Decker Buses

Big Bus Tours are open-top double-decker buses. You get to soak in the fascinating views of the city and take in every unique aroma. Did I mention the top deck provides the best photo opportunities?

‍ Audio Commentary

Big Bus Tours provides audio commentary in multiple languages, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of the city’s landmarks, history, and culture.

Hop-On, Hop-Off Service

The hop-on, hop-off service allows you to get on and get off to explore! You can get off the bus at any designated stop, allowing you to discover the city at your own pace.

Big Bus Tours Hop-On and Hop-Off Service

Multiple Tour Routes

Big Bus Tours offers multiple tour routes in each city, covering all the major sights and attractions.

Mobile Tickets

Big Bus Tours offers mobile tickets. Everything can easily be booked and accessed on your phone.

Is the Big Bus Tours Worth it?

It’s safe to conclude that, yes, the Big Bus Tours is the ultimate city introduction tour.

There are a lot of positives to it. You get the guidance and convenience of a group trip and the flexibility and privacy of a private trip, all in one package! Buses depart frequently, and you can witness all the city’s major attractions.

Still, they’ve been a few negative reviews in cities like  London  and  New York . Complaints of routes not matching maps or drivers giving incorrect information. Another major con is overcrowding!

There’s also the fact that Big Bus Tours doesn’t have a customer service line. Its telephone lines are unavailable, a major turn-off in most services. You can only get in touch via Live Chat, downloading the Big Bus Tours app, or using the  enquiry form  on the site to send your query.

Our Rating: 4.0/5

Why obnoxious big-bus city tours are sort of awesome

Summer Hull

I have a travel confession: I kind of love big-bus tours. You know, the ones with those often gaudy-looking buses with tourists piling on and off in major cities everywhere. Now I don't like to admit that I'm the sort of traveler who hops on a double-decker bus, heads to the top deck, plugs in some cheap headphones that come with the tour and learns the lay of the land by looping about and listening to prerecorded facts and trivia about a city -- but I sometimes am that sort of traveler. And even if you think you aren't the type of traveler to get anywhere near a hop-on and hop-off bus tour, maybe you should give it a try.

Grandma is to thank (or blame?)

I can't truly claim the fame or blame for my appreciation of big-bus tours -- my mom made it happen. A few years ago, she and her sister took a fancy post-teaching retirement trip through Europe courtesy of miles and points. They went to a number of European cities such as London, Paris, Zurich and Rome, but didn't have the luxury of staying in each city more than a few nights.

To conserve energy, reduce stress and maximize time, they decided to start each city visit with a big-bus tour. I may or may not have given their plan an internal side-eye, but it worked out great. When I later traveled to Barcelona and Madrid with my mom (and daughter), she wanted to again rely on the big bus to provide an intro to the European cities and I grudgingly agreed. She was right -- it was sort of great.

Perfect for short stays

If you have a full week in a city, you can probably find your way around to all the major highlights pretty easily sans bus, but if you are just going for a long weekend, the big bus shines. You can start your first day with a couple of hours on the bus and even hop off at the sites that interest you most. On your subsequent days, you'll have a good feel for the urban geography and can spend your time exploring where you'll be the happiest.

Great when transportation is a challenge

Some travelers thrive on the challenge of learning to navigate public transportation in a new-to-them city, but many don't. In fact, learning to navigate a new city by bus or subway can be really stressful at first -- especially if there's a language or currency barrier. If you don't want to learn the transportation system for a short stay, the big buses are potentially great solutions that don't cost nearly as much as taking a car everywhere. Big-bus tickets will cost more than a public subway or bus pass, but the routes are easy to understand and you can usually use them to get close to many areas of a city. You can typically buy your big-bus tickets online and not have to mess with the currency or chip-and-pin issues you may face at subway or train stations.

If you want to rely on the big bus for a quick visit, the second and/or third day of a pass is usually significantly cheaper than the first day, if you commit to those days up front. For example, the most recent big-bus tour I took was in Vienna, where a one-day pass is around €27, but a two-day pass is just €31.50.

Walk less, enjoy more

Do you still think taking the big bus is lame? Imagine that you have travelers in your group who have issues walking long distances. They may be young kids, older adults or anyone in between. I travel with both and the bus is the easiest solution short of a pricey private driver. In fact, my daughters have not only saved steps on the big buses, but taken legitimate naps. The buses typically loop, so if your kids fall asleep on them, just stay onboard and nap for a loop, which is often one to two hours. When you are jet-lagged in a European city , this can be a great compromise between wasting a day napping in the hotel and getting out.

(As an added perk, there is often included Wi-Fi, so you can catch up on your internet-ing while cruising around the city.)

Speak to me in a language I can understand

Immersion in a new culture is a beautiful thing, but so is some understanding of what is going on. The big-bus tours usually offer recorded information in a wide variety of languages. On the big-bus tour in Paris, you have your choice of listening to English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, Arabic, Mandarin Chinese and Korean. After a day of struggling through cafe orders and using translation apps to read signs, listening to your native language for a bit can be a nice break.

Choosing the best big-bus tour

It's common for a major city to have more than one big-bus tour provider, which can get a little confusing. There is no one bus company that is best around the world, so you'll need to choose the best one for you in the city you are visiting. The best one is usually the one with a major stop closest to where you are staying, but compare reviews, prices, hours and routes to choose the ones best for you. The truth is they are normally all very similar.

Bottom line

I get it, "real" travelers don't get on big red buses. But just like I think there is value in strategically popping into an international McDonald's , big-bus tours can also have tangible value on certain types of trips or when exploring with certain types of travelers. Just avoid putting up an Instagram of you on the bus and your friends won't ever be the wiser. We certainly won't tell.

Paris Big Bus Tour Review

T he Paris Big Bus Tour is the gift that keeps on giving. Truth be told I love to walk and see cities on foot, but Paris is a must by bus because it makes financial sense, and it will save you a lot of time.

The Big Bus Tour in Paris

Is it worth it.

When traveling, I am a fan of taking public transportation and traveling like a local. It’s environmentally friendly and you can save money on car rental expenses.

Taking the Big Bus Tour was one of the best decisions that we made because the tourist attractions are spread apart, and you can see many more points of interest while saving time and money.

Paris is made up of 20 neighborhoods (or arrondissements) and the Big Bus Tour will travel through 7 of them.

We spent a total of 9 days and Paris and had a pretty full agenda which included lunch at the Eiffel Tower , a river cruise on the Seine, a day trip to Versailles, a classical concert at La Sainte Chapelle, trips to outdoor markets like Marche des Enfants Rouges, visiting the rooftop of the Arc de Triumph, souvenir shopping, Sacre Coeur, the Louvre Museum, the Champs Elysees, the Catacombs, Rue de Cler, Pont Alexandre , a croissant making class with a Parisien chef, Ile de la Cite, Berthillon, and more. We also ventured out to see Paris at night and the views were stunning!

How Long is the Big Bus Tour in Paris

The Red Route is the main tour, and it takes about two hours to see everything if you don’t exit the bus. We stayed on the bus from start to finish to get a idea of places that we wanted to visit on foot.

How Much is the Big Bus Tour in Paris

The ticket fee will vary based on the number of days that you want to join the tour bus. I recommend the combination ticket where you can see the points of interest for the Big Bus, and take a cruise on the river Seine.

It is possible to do both the tour and the cruise in one day. If you join the tour and finish by 5 PM, you can then join the cruise on the river and catch the sunset depending on the time of year that you go.

Check for tickets on the Paris Big Bus Tour here .

Are There Toilets on the Big Bus

Sorry, but no matter what the city it is very likely that you won’t find any restrooms. However, you can ask the driver or attendants on the bus to guide you. The wonderful thing about Paris is there are public restrooms available for just a euro.

When is the Best Time to Visit Paris

We went on the bus tour at the end of March for Spring break. The weather was a bit chilly and in the high 50s to low 60s. It was sunny, but not incredibly warm.

The prime months are April, May, September, and October when highs reach a comfortable 60-70°F (15-21°C).

Big Bus Tour Review

We purchased our tickets online using a smartphone after touring Notre Dame. Because the cathedral was one of the tour stops, we thought we were close, but the stop was a 7-minute walk away.

To add, the area was congested, and the instructions were confusing. After calling the tour company, we found the stop heading west but then learned that the bus stop was across the street and coming from the south direction.

Fortunately, we caught it in time and were able to get nice seats on the upper deck.

It was a sunny, cool day and one would think would be an excellent opportunity for photos. The problem for me is that I don’t have great photography skills and I was using my smartphone.

When we got to a landmark or icon, it was difficult to take a good shot due to the speed at which the bus traveled, bumps in the road, construction equipment, or overgrown trees, not to mention the hands, heads, and cameras of other passengers.

On our tour there were two routes in operation, the red route, and another color (which may no longer be available). The red route took about two hours to see everything. Then we had to exit the bus at the last stop to catch another bus that went into other neighborhoods.

The most interesting point on the second route was The Moulin Rouge. Otherwise, the sights were non-eventful, so we caught up on rest and napped on the lower level during the ride.

Overall, it was time well spent. And since we planned activities at a few of the attractions we had the chance to make up for bad photos taken on the bus.

Where to Catch the Big Bus Tour in Paris

There are 10 stops on the red route and the buses will arrive in frequent intervals. During peak visiting months, like spring to summer, you can expect longer waits and slim pickings for a good seat.

1 – Louvre Pyramide / Big Bus Information Centre (11 avenue de l’Opéra)

2 – Louvre at Pont des Arts (2 rue de l’Amiral de Coligny)

3 – Notre Dame ( 3, Rue Lagrange (outside souvenir shop, opposite park entrance)

4 – Musée d’Orsay (58 Place Henry de Montherlant, facing the museum)

5 – Champs-Elysées (156, avenue des Champs-Elysées, facing the Arc de Triomphe)

6 – Grand Palais (Avenue Winston Churchill, facing Grand Palais and Petit Palais)

7 – Trocadéro (Avenue Paul Doumer, next to the Musée de l’Homme)

8- Tour Eiffel (Quai Branly, Entrée 2 Tour Eiffel, at the north pillar of the Eiffel Tower)

9 – Champ de Mars (Avenue Joseph Bouvard)

10 – Opéra Garnier (Facing 15 rue Scribe, next to the Roissy airport shuttle bus stop)

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The tour is pre-recorded and the audio narratives can be heard in English, French, Italian , Spanish, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Mandarin, and Korean.
  • Be mindful of potential traffic delays, especially during peak hours so that you can plan your tour for off-peak times to avoid congestion.
  • Be aware of any events that may alter the experience (rallies, protests, huge sports competitions).

I can’t emphasize the awareness of events enough. There was an enormous parade outside our hotel on one trip, and protests that caused the Champs Elysee to be boarded up during another trip.

Final Thoughts on the Paris Big Bus Tour

Overall, it was a pretty fun girls’ trip but the last thing I wated to do was spend most of our time and money riding the subway all over Paris.

The Big Bus is a no brainer if you want to see the best of Paris without wearing yourself out.

As a US citizen, I try to make the most of my visits to Europe.

The more countries I visit, the more I am convinced that I’ve made the best use of a 10-hour flight.

A quick trip to the Covent Garden in London, Venice , Italy, or any another country is always must for me.

And as always, you can see whether you are in New York , Paris, or Chicago , you experience so much in a short amount of time with a Big Bus Tour.
