How to see the Gap of Dunloe jaunting car PLUS boat tour! (photos!) (2024)

A trip to the famous Gap of Dunloe (Dún Lóich) is a must-do activity for anyone traveling to County Kerry, Ireland . The Gap of Dunloe is a narrow mountain pass that stretches for about 11 kilometers and is located between the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks mountain range and the Purple Mountain Group range in County Kerry. This ridiculously scenic narrow mountain pass offers breathtaking views of the area’s mountains, valleys, and lakes.

How to see the Gap of Dunloe

The best way, and certainly one of the most popular ways, to explore the Gap is by taking a Gap of Dunloe jaunting car ride (horse and cart.) Several tour companies allow you to combine a jaunting car ride with a boat trip on the Lakes of Killarney to fill out your day.

The Gap of Dunloe Tour

The best Gap of Dunloe tour includes both a horse drawn jaunting car ride through the narrow road of the Gap as well as an open boat ride through the beautiful Killarney lakes on the return journey! A wonderful excursion in the great outdoors!

The starting point for this particular tour is at Ross Castle, so plan to tour the castle either before or after.

The tour company will then take you by coach to Kate Kearney’s Cottage. This is where you will catch your jaunting car through the gap.

Fun fact: The cottage is named after Kate Kearney who is said to have died of childbirth here at the age of 102! You’ve got to love those Irish legends!

Sights along the way include abandoned cottages, stone bridges, and a series of lakes.

Tip: if you want to hear the commentary from the knowledgeable guide, you better sit up front because I wasn’t able to actually hear anything from my seat in the carriage.

Within the u-shaped valley are five lakes (from north to south): Coosaun Lough, Cushnavally Lake, Auger Lake (Augher Lake), and Black Lake, Black Lough. These lakes are connected by the River Loe. (source: Wikipedia )

The Wishing Bridge, also known as the White Bridge, is a small stone bridge located in the middle of Dunloe Gap. According to local legend, if a person makes a wish while crossing the bridge and does not speak until they have crossed it, their wish will come true.

At the top of the pass, you may be required to get out for a short walk uphill to give the horses a break.

Your jaunting car journey will end at Lord Brandon’s cottage where you’ll be given time to have lunch (lunch not included in the price of the tour) before you catch your boat back to Ross Castle.

On the homeward journey, an expert oarsman will row you over the lakes. You’ll start out on the enchanting upper lake (Upper Lake Killarney), pass Old Weir bridge (the old arch bridge), Brickeen Bridge, and then on to Muckross Lake and then the lower lake (Lough Leane.)

Other tour operators

There are a lot of other tour operators who offer similar tours: (these are all walking tours, self-guided in most cases, with the OPTION to add a jaunting car ride at an extra cost)

  • Gap of Dunloe Tour by Foot & Boat (includes round trip transportation from Killarney)
  • Killarney: Gap of Dunloe Walking and Boat Tour (includes pick up service)
  • Lakes of Killarney Boat Tour with Transfer
  • Gap of Dunloe & Lakes of Killlarney Boat Tour by Deros Tour
  • Combination Jaunting Car & Lake Cruise Tour -cruise the lake in comfort on this covered cruiser

Other ways to see the Gap of Dunloe

If you are a true “Do it Yourself,” type there are other ways to see the Gap.

Jaunting car WITHOUT a tour

You can make your way to Kate Kearney Cottage and hire a horse and cart there. (bring cash) Expect to pay €35 per person or for €140 per jaunting cart, you can have the cart all to yourself! The trip lasts approximately 1.5 hours.

Gap of Dunloe walk

For those who prefer to explore the area by foot and take in the spectacular scenery at their own pace, it is possible to walk the Dunloe Gap. At the Head of Dunloe ( the full head of the Gap) things start to get “less scenic” so it’s a good spot to turn around and walk back to your car. One advantage to walking is you get to see the Gap from both directions!

Some prefer to experience the Gap by bike. Bike rentals are available in Killarney town, which is located approximately 12 kilometers away from the Gap of Dunloe. There are several bike rental companies in the area that offer a variety of rental options, including hourly, daily, and weekly rates. There are even companies that offer bike-on-boat tours of the Gap.

Here are some options:

  • Killarney Rent-a-Bike
  • Killarney Bike Rental

Map: whether hiking or biking, you can use this interactive biking and hiking map of the Gap of Dunloe to get your bearings.

Gap of Dunloe Drive

Can you drive the Gap? If you have a rental car, you may be wondering if you can drive through the Gap. The narrow road that runs through the Gap is a public road and you technically can drive it, but it is discouraged. Here’s the deal: the road is very narrow, and you’ll be at the mercy of the trap drivers to allow you to pass. From what I have witnessed, they aren’t very motivated to allow motor vehicles to pass. In fact, it seemed to me that they did what they could to NOT allow vehicles to pass.

On top of this you will be dealing with bicyclists and pedestrians. The easiest way is to either take a tour, bike, or walk. If you are determined to drive, start as early in the morning as possible, and rather than going back through the pass make your way out of the valley via Molls Gap (one of the best scenic drives in the area.)

How to there

Nearest airport to Killarney Ireland:

Kerry Airport (KIR) which is located only 15-minute drive from Killarney town.

Killarney Distance from:

Cork (90 km) Kenmare (43 km) Dingle (64 km) Tralee (34 km)

If your tour is meeting at Ross Castle

Ross Castle Address: Ross Rd, Ross Island, Killarney, Co. Kerry GPS Coordinates: 52.04184333172816, -9.531244978375168

Parking: There is a large parking area located adjacent to the castle.

If you are headed to the gap on your own:

Kate Kearny’s Cottage GPS coordinates: 52.04079883394405, -9.631519658024162

Parking: free small lot at the cottage

By train or by bus to Killarney

Trains from Dublin (some change in Mallow) total travel time, about 4 hours, bus travel takes slightly longer. Bus and trains coming from Cork take about 1.5 hours (so a great day trip option) To seamlessly plan your public transportation options use the Rome2Rio website or app. From Killarney you will need to either drive, take a taxi, or arrange a tour to the Gap.

Things to consider when touring the Gap of Dunloe

What to wear/what to bring.

Wear sensible shoes. Tours go rain or shine…It’s Ireland! So, bring your rain gear and learn to dance in the rain!

Consider your fitness level

One important thing to note is that the Gap of Dunloe can be quite challenging for some visitors, especially those with mobility issues.

How much time do you need?

That depends on what you plan to do. Walkers: The round-trip journey can take around three hours. Bikers: can do it in less time but you’ll be biking from Killarney town, which will add time to your day. The recommended “tour” is 5 hours so plan for a full day. You can fill in your day with some of the park options listed in this article.

There are bathrooms at Kate’s Cottage so use them while you can! You’ll get another opportunity when you get to Lord Brandon Cottage. (distance between bathrooms, 11 km)

You may need cash for purchases at the cottages and if you plan to hire a jaunting car you may need cash.

when to visit

The gap is one of Kerry’s most popular tourist destinations so expect crowds. If you have your heart set on a tour, you should book ahead.

Tours can be booked year-round. The weather can be unpredictable, so it’s always a good idea to check the forecast before planning your visit but tours go rain or shine so dress for the weather and go enjoy the beautiful scenery! We visited at the end of May when all of the Rhododendrons were in bloom!

The general rule of thumb for avoiding the worst crowds at popular tourist attractions are:

  • Visit early morning or late in the day (i.e., the first or last tour of the day)
  • Weekdays are often less crowded than weekends.
  • Travel in the shoulder or off season: Summer months are peak season / high season, spring and fall are considered shoulder seasons, and winter months are off season in Ireland, but you will want to check to be sure that attractions will be open.

Jaunting Car and boat rides are not suitable for pets. I recommend finding a nearby groomer and dropping your furry friend off for a spa day!

Dining Options

Heather Restaurant is located just to the north of Kate Kearny’s.

Kate Kearney Cottage is a popular spot to grab a bite to eat before or after their journey through the Gap. The restaurant serves traditional Irish fare, including stews, soups, and sandwiches. They also serve both hot and cold drinks. If you are doing the recommended tour, you’ll need to grab something to go because after the bus drops you off you don’t have much time before you head into the Gap.

Lord Brandon’s Cottage serves a variety of quick bites such as soups, salads, sandwiches, drinks and other refreshments. Tours give ample time to grab a quick lunch, use the restrooms, and explore the area a bit.

Accommodation

Here are a few of my stand-out best places to stay:

  • Killarney Randles Hotel
  • Killarney Dromhall Hotel

  • Killarney Royal Hotel

  • Parknasilla Resort & Spa: It’s a bit of a drive but this place is worth driving for! mountain views, looks a bit like a castle, luxury for around $200 per night! distance: 37 km ( Black Valley ) 52 km (Ross Castle) book it here on Booking.com !
  • The Rose Suite Kenmare: mountain views and Kenmare is less commercial than Killarney. Distance: 27 Kilometers (Black Valley) 33 km (Ross Castle) book it here on Booking.com !

We based ourselves in Killorglin. It’s a quiet town where you can escape the hordes of tourists that flock to this area. It’s a great home base that is central to many of the sites in the area. Were central to Dingle Peninsula, visiting Skellig Michael, the Ring of Kerry and Killarney National Park so we opted to stay in one place for 4 nights instead of moving hotel.

  • The Bianconi Inn: This hotel is on the newer side and SUPER nice! You won’t regret staying here! Distance: Ross Castle (25 km) book it here on Booking.com !

want to stay in a castle???!!!

Torc Waterfall (literal translation wild boars)

Area hiking opportunities

This area of Ireland is just pretty! other worthwhile trails within these mountain ranges include:

  • The Black Valley: Is a little piece of Heaven on earth! This is one of my favorite hikes of all time! I’d say this hike is an easy one but long. However, feel free to turn around at any time! Get more information: Find out everything you need to know about hiking the Black Valley !
  • Bridia Valley Walk: The Black Valley is also beautiful from the Bridia end. Next time I plan to start on the other end. However, it is possible to walk from the Black Valley to the Bridia Valley. The walk is 10 km and will take you 3 hours and 45 minutes. (rated difficult)
  • Carrauantoohil Mountain trails: I love being hemmed into a valley by towering mountains, but some prefer the view from above! The Black Valley just happens to be in the shadow of Carrauntoohil Mountain. Carrauntoohil is not only the highest point in the Macgillycuddy Reeks Range, but also Ireland’s highest Mountain! The trail leaves from Cronin’s Yard.
  • Tomies Woods: This trail has been described as a walk through a Fairy Forest with a waterfall by the name of O’Sullivan’s Cascade, which I have heard described as “even better than the Torc Waterfall” although not as easy to access. Here is a very good guide to exploring Tomie’s Wood.
  • The Kerry Way: The Black Valley is part of the iconic Ring of Kerry Way, a 214-kilometer lopped walking trail that begins and ends in Killarney. It is also part of a 55–kilometer walking loop that includes the Killarney–Gap of Dunloe–Black Valley– Moll’s Gap area. Check here if you’re looking for more information on the Kerry Way

more ways to fill your day

  • Golf: there are several golf courses in the area
  • Rock climbing : for those who are looking for adventure this area is a popular spot for rock climbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the gap of dunloe famous and is the gap of dunloe worth it.

The Gap of Dunloe is known for its breathtaking scenery and outstanding natural beauty and yes, the Gap of Dunloe is definitely worth visiting. Visitors to the Gap will experience the best of Ireland’s natural landscapes, including the five lakes and the rugged mountain scenery. Visitors can fill out an entire day with a pony and trap ride, hiking, biking, or taking a boat tour out on the adjacent lakes. In addition, the surrounding Killarney National Park provides ample opportunity for activities to fill your day.

How long is the Gap of Dunloe walk?

Around 7 miles from the free parking area at Kate Kearney’s Cottage to the Head of the Gap and back.

How long does it take to drive the Gap of Dunloe?

This depends on how many horses and traps, pedestrians / walkers, and bikes that you must maneuver around. From Kate Kearney’s Cottage, considered the beginning of the Gap, to the entrance to the Black Valley is around 8 km. However, you’ll be driving at a snail’s pace. And don’t expect to be able to fully take in the scenery. You’ll need to keep your eyes on the road, so you don’t hit anyone. It’s better just to either walk or schedule a jaunting car ride or get started very early so you can finish the route before the crowds arrive.

Gap of Dunloe jaunting car and boat trip

A gorgeous mountain pass, overlooked by some of Ireland's highest peaks, the Gap of Dunloe is a prime attraction on the edge of Killarney National Park. This scenic looped tour by jaunting car (horse and carriage) and boat is a wonderfully relaxing way to discover the incredible scenery of the national park.

You'll get the chance to get out on foot between dramatic peaks in the ancient glacial valley, enjoy the easy banter and expert local knowledge of your jaunting car driver, and see the park's moody peaks and deep russet hills from the water.

You'll be picked up from your hotel in the morning for this private, full-day tour and driven north out of Killarney town toward Kate Kearney’s Cottage, a touristy, family-run pub. Here you’ll meet your jaunting car horse and driver, and set off up the lane toward the Gap of Dunloe.

The Gap is a relatively quiet but very popular mountain track between the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks to the west and Purple Mountain to the east, which has outstanding views both back across Tomies Mountain and on toward Moll’s Gap.

The track is mainly used by walkers, cyclists, jaunting cars and only the occasional vehicle. It leads steadily up into the mountains, passing lakes, craggy boulders, streams, ruined cottages and a few solitary houses.

As you go your driver will give you a potted history of the park, its landscape and the people who have lived here over the centuries from Saint Finian who founded a leper colony on Innisfallen Island in the 7th century to the visit by Queen Victoria in 1861.

From the summit you’ll descend to Lord Brandon’s Cottage, a 19th-century hunting lodge which sits on the western shore of Killarney’s Upper Lake. Here you'll transfer to a traditional open boat to travel across the three lakes of Killarney, Upper Lake, Muckross Lake and Lough Leane, to return to Ross Castle on the outskirts of Killarney town. The views of the surrounding scenery are spectacular with the brooding mountains framing the steely lakes, ancient forests and stunning hills.

You may also be able to spot wildlife as you glide across the water with sika and red deer often seen in the surrounding woodland and white-tailed eagles soaring overhead. If you are extremely lucky you may even see the red deer swimming across the lake to graze on the lush islands.

When you arrive at medieval Ross Castle you’ll be met by your driver and taken back to your hotel. During the day, there will be time to stop for lunch (not included) at a place of your choosing.

Gap of Dunloe & Lakes of Killarney Tour

The Gap of Dunloe Tour is one the Top 10 Scenic Tours of Ireland and if the Gods smile on you and you are fortunate enough to get a fine day, then you are in for one of those rare, once in a lifetime experiences. The tour leaves early about 10-ish (we’re on Kerry time here) A vintage coach picks you up from your accomodation and brings you to Rosse Castle, where you can have a little wander about before setting off in an open boat (maximum 12 people) for a leisurely 13 mile boat trip which takes you up through the famous lakes of Killarney via the meeting of the waters. When I asked Tadhg our boatman, who knows these lakes like the back of his hand, how long they had actually been doing this trip? “Ara, not long at all really, since about the 1800s” Which is when Queen Victoria (God Bless her) came to visit for on a three day trip back in 1861 taking a royal barge on the very same trip, which sparked a great interest in visitors from England, keen to repeat the experience. Her great, great grand-daughter Queen Elizabeth II followed suit just 150 years later back in 2011....

The boat trip eventually winds up at Lord Brandon’s cottage, about 2 hours later, where you can get a light lunch before the second leg of the Gap of Dunloe Tour which is a long walk, hike or ride in a jaunting car over the 7 mile long Gap of Dunloe which is the only pass along the 20 mile ridge of MacGillycuddy Reeks. Not wanting too waste too much time, okay being lazy, I opted for the jaunting car driven by Pat who was born and reared in the Black Valley of hardy stock that included Mystery, the horse (it’s all in the name, herself took it easy going downhill, yet galloped uphill?) What followed was another couple of blissful hours while trying to take in the scale of the mountains and the vast quietness, interspersed with plenty of good ole chat and renditions of "My Lovely Horse, running through the fields" (Father Ted like) with Tom and Catherine pictured below.....

A jaunting car ride through the Gap of Dunloe

We stopped up at the actual gap to let Mystery have a drink and posed for photographs, prior to the home run (leisurely trot in Mystery's book) down to Kate Kearney's Cottage for restorative pints of Guinness. All in all, it was one of those extra special days that makes life worth living. Put the Gap of Dunloe on your bucket list and if God spares you, do it....

The Killarney Jaunting Cars: History, Tours + Tipping

The Killarney Jaunting Cars: History, Tours + Tipping

The Killarney Jaunting Cars (the horse and ‘cart’) have graced the cover of millions of postcards over the years.

They’re one of the most popular things to do in Killarney amongst visiting tourists and you’ll find them in several locations around Killarney Town .

Below, you’ll discover the history behind them along with the different tour options (e.g. the Gap of Dunloe jaunting tour). Enjoy!

Table of Contents

Some quick need-to-knows about the Killarney Jaunting Cars

killarney horse and cart

The Killarney Jaunting cars can cause a bit of confusion, so it’s worth taking 20 seconds to read the points below, first:

1. What they are

Built as a mode of personal travel in the 1800s to mid 20th century, these two or four-wheeled horse-drawn rigs were widely used to carry up to 4 four people. The name ‘jaunting’ was used to describe the pleasure trip and it’s where we get the saying that someone is ‘off on a jaunt’.

2. A very old tradition

Jaunting Cars were used for well over 100 years throughout Ireland and were a commonplace form of transport. They were replaced gradually once public transport became more readily available and motor cars started to become more common.

3. Where they leave from

The Killarney Jaunting cars leave from of several pick-up/drop-off spots including near the Lake Hotel, Torc Waterfall , Muckross House and Killarney Town Centre. If you prefare, you can book one of the Jaunty tours in advance (affiliate link).

Tipping in Ireland is entirely at your discretion. There is an accepted rule of thumb of 10% of the service cost, and good service is always worth rewarding. However, it is entirely up to you.

5. Dress for the weather

Some of the Jaunting cars in Killarney are uncovered, so it’s well worth dressing with all types of weather in mind (i.e. waterproofs thoughout the year).

The story behind the Jaunting Cars

Killarney

Traditionally, a jaunting car was a lightly built two-wheeled horse-drawn carriage, usually pulled by a single horse – in its day, this was akin to the family car.

Jaunting cars were used by almost everyone who could afford one, and also as a means for others to earn a living by ‘driving’ passengers. The term ‘jarveys’ refers to those who ‘drive’ the jaunting cars.

In today’s vernacular, we can often hear the expression ‘go off on a jaunt’, and this usually refers to a short pleasurable excursion and comes directly from the usage of jaunting cars.

Although widely used throughout Ireland during the 1800s and into the 20th century, jaunting cars are now reserved as a tourist activity for those wanting to connect to a bygone era or perhaps a family legacy.

Some recommended Jaunting Car tours in Killarney

Jaunting cars Killarney

If you’d like to head out on one of the Killarney Jaunting car tours, these are the ones that I have been recommending to people for years.

Note: if you book a tour through one of the links below we may make a commission that helps us keep this site going. You won’t pay extra, but we really do appreciate it.

1. The 1-hour traditional Jaunting car tour

This tour is the one most people that visit this website book and I’ve rarely heard anything but rave reviews.

The tour takes 1 hour and you’ll trot around the town while taking in the gothic St Mary’s Church, historic Ross Castle , and the majestic scenery of Lough Leane.

2. The Gap of Dunloe jaunting car tour

If you’re looking to explore more of Killarney and you have some time, this very popular 5-hour Gap of Dunloe jaunting car tour is worth considering.

The tour starts with the jaunty tour of the Black Valley and Gap of Dunloe , ending at Lord Brandon’s Cottage . You’ll then move to a boat where you’ll cruise through the Lakes of Killarney.

Other things to do while you’re in Killarney

killarney national park

One of the beauties of the Jaunting cars in Killarney is that they give you a taste of what the area has to offer.

Many of the most popular places to visit in Kerry are a stone’s throw away, including:

  • The Ring of Kerry Drive : Start from Killarney Town and follow the well-trodden world-famous looped drive
  • The Killarney National Park walks : The range from hard to handy and they’re a great was to explore the area
  • Muckross Abbey : Stunning ruins of a Franscian Friary founded in 1448
  • Muckross House : A tudor-style mansion that dates back to 1843
  • Torc Waterfall : A 20 metres high waterfall with a thunderous cascade that runs for 110 metres.

FAQs about Jaunting and Jarveys in Killarney

We’ve had a lot of questions over the years asking about everything from ‘Where do they leave from?’ to ‘Do you have to tip?’.

In the section below, we’ve popped in the most FAQs that we’ve received. If you have a question that we haven’t tackled, ask away in the comments section below.

How much are the jaunting cars in Killarney?

The cheapest you’ll get one is from around the €35 mark (see above). Some include longer treks/additional experiences and can go as high as €100.

Do you tip on the jaunting cars?

Tipping is discretionary, but generally always appreciated. In Ireland, a 10% tip for good service is the norm. However, you can tip higher or lower, if you like.

Gap of Dunloe Ireland

There are many ways to visit the Gap of Dunloe, and the best for you depends on your fitness level and how much time you have.

Click on each to see more detailed information about how to do it yourself:

  • Walk the whole Gap of Dunloe : This is arguably the best way to see this area as you’ll get to see the entire Gap.
  • Walk part of the Gap of Dunloe : This is an excellent choice if you have limited time. This is what we personally did and we had such a wonderful experience.
  • Take a guided tour : If you’d prefer to have all the logistics organized for you, this guided tour is highly-rated and includes a boat ride as well as stops at other landmarks.
  • Bike the Gap of Dunloe : A great way to see the whole Gap and work up a sweat.
  • Ride in a jaunting car (horse cart) : Traditional horse carts bring guests up and down the Gap.
  • Drive the Gap of Dunloe : It is possible to drive this road, but you will need to start (very!) early.
Psst! We put together a guide with everything you need to know about  renting a car in Ireland if you think driving is your best option.

Our personal experience & recommendation

Black Lake Killarney National Park Ireland

Whichever way you choose to see this area will be a great choice. However, we personally think it is best experienced on foot , where you have the chance to go at your own pace and really take in the beauty. Plus, walking makes this a free activity , which is good news for budget-conscious travelers.

If you have limited time and are doing this as a stop on the Ring of Kerry, we’d recommend doing the short walk (give yourself 1 hour to do the walk and enjoy the lake view). This is what we personally did and we had such a wonderful experience.

If you are traveling with a child (or are just looking for the easiest and fastest way to see the Gap of Dunloe), this is what we’d recommend.

However, if you have an extra day in the Killarney area, we would have loved to walk the entire road (allot 5+ hours for this, or keep reading to see how you can cut this time down a bit).

1. Hike the entire Gap of Dunloe

Gap of Dunloe Ireland

Okay, so you want to hike the entire Gap of Dunloe? Good for you! It will be an epic adventure, that’s for sure.

Now, you have a decision to make:

You can either:

  • Walk the entire out-and-back trail ( 14 miles ), retracing your steps to return to where you started. ( More info )
  • Schedule a boat and a shuttle bus so you only have to walk the length of the Gap once ( 7 miles ). ( More info )

A) Out-and-Back Gap of Dunloe Route

  • Distance: 14 miles (22.5 km)
  • Elevation gain: 1,273 feet (388 meters)*
  • Type: Out and back
  • Difficulty: Moderate to hard
  • Time: Allot 5-6.5 hours depending on your fitness level and how many stops you’d like to make
  • AllTrails route
*I believe that the elevation gain listed on AllTrails (2,171 feet) is incorrect. I got the elevation gain listed above by using Google Maps.

By following this route, you will hike from Kate Kearney’s Cottage to Lord Brandon’s Cottage and back again .

This is a long hike, so make sure you have ample time. Logistically, it’s pretty easy because you can hike back to your car where you started the hike. Also, since you’re not relying on a tour or other mode of transportation, it is free.

If this sounds like a bit too long of a hike for you, there’s another way you can hike the entire Gap of Dunloe , but you simply will do it as a point-to-point hike. You will start on one end and finish at the other instead of retracing your steps. This will cut your total distance in half.

Here’s how:

B) Point-to-Point Gap of Dunloe Route

  • Distance: 7 miles (11 km)
  • Elevation gain: 590 feet (180 meters) – 682 feet (208 meters)*
  • Type: Point to point
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Important: Make sure you’re watching the time if you have a boat or shuttle to catch at a specific time.
*If you start your hike at Kate Kearney’s Cottage (the north end), you will have slightly less elevation gain than if you start at the south end and hike north.

In addition to walking, you will also need to take a boat and a shuttle to avoid retracing your steps.

Boat ride

Ross Castle Killarney Ireland

You can take a boat ride across the lake that connects Ross Castle to Lord Brandon’s Cottage (at the south end of the Gap of Dunloe).

Boat rides cost €25 per person (about $27 USD) and should be booked in advance.

You can go either direction:

  • Hike from Kate Kearney’s Cottage to Lord Brandon’s, then take the boat from Brandon’s to Ross Castle at 2 p.m.
  • Take the boat from Ross Castle to Lord Brandon’s Cottage at 10:30 a.m., then hike to Kate Kearney’s Cottage.

Shuttle

There are also shuttle services which can help fill in the gaps of your transportation.

  • Killarney Tourist Office to Ross Castle: departs at 9:45 a.m., 11:45 a.m., 4:20 p.m.; €3 per person
  • Killarney Tourist Office to Gap Of Dunloe : departs at 9 a.m.; €5 per person
  • Kate Kearney’s to Killarney town or Ross Castle: departs at 4 p.m.; €5 per person (If you arrive before or after this time, you can also call a taxi to collect you.)
  • Ross Castle to Killarney town: departs 9:50 a.m., 11:50 a.m., 2:40 p.m., 4:30 p.m.; €2 per person

Check with Killarney Shuttle Bus to ensure times are accurate before your trip.

2. Hike part of the Gap of Dunloe

Gap of Dunloe lake Ireland

This is by far the easiest, cheapest, and fastest way to see the Gap of Dunloe.

If you are on a time crunch, a tight budget, or just don’t want to walk very far, this is an excellent choice.

This is what we personally did, and it was definitely the best choice for us.

True, you won’t see the entire Gap of Dunloe, but you’ll still see a pretty incredible section. And it won’t take too much time out of your day. In fact, you can do this on the same day you drive the Ring of Kerry .

Part of the Gap of Dunloe (Kate Kearney’s Cottage to the Wishing Bridge)

  • Route: Parking lot to Wishing Bridge and back
  • Distance: 1.6 miles (2.6 km)
  • Elevation gain: 140 feet (43 meters)
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Time: The walk should take around 15 minutes each way , but you’ll definitely want some time to spend at Black Lake before you turn around. We’d recommend giving yourself 1 hour total to explore and take it all in.

On this route, you’ll start at the parking lot near Kate Kearney’s cottage (see Google Maps location ) and you will walk to one of the most iconic sites in the Gap: the Wishing Bridge , which sits between Coosaun Lough and Black Lake.

The walk should take about 15 minutes to get to the Wishing Bridge , but you’ll want to give yourself some time to enjoy the views here before you turn around and return to your starting point.

Traveling with a baby or toddler? This is the option we’d recommend. We did this walk with our 1.5-year-old daughter and it was great. I think the longer hike may have been a little much unless we had prepared a lot more.

3. Guided Tour of the Gap of Dunloe

Guided Gap of Dunloe tour

Want to experience the entire Gap of Dunloe, but not big on hiking? Are the logistics of it all making your head spin?

One way to simplify things is to take a guided tour.

This tour is very highly-rated and includes a boat ride across the lake as well as a jaunting cart and transportation back to town.

Here’s what guests are saying:

“This was one of the best tours we’ve been on in Ireland. Was like an adventure rather than one more bus tour. Rode a boat through the lakes and river around the gap of Dunloe followed by a pony and trap trip through the gap. Great guides having the usual Irish sense of humor. The pony and trap portion was pretty exciting.” – Roy M., June 2023
Insider Tip: Before you book it, be sure to read our notes on jaunting carts so you know what to expect.

4. Bike the Gap of Dunloe

Gap of Dunloe Ireland

If you fancy yourself a regular Lance Armstrong, biking the Gap of Dunloe will be right up your alley.

Cycling this mountain road with 360º views will surely be one of your favorite experiences in Ireland .

But before you hop on two wheels, a word of caution: this route is for experienced cyclists only . There are steep climbs, along with narrow and curving downhill sections that can be dangerous if you’re not a confident cyclist.

Nearby Killarney National Park is a very popular place to cycle, meaning there are several companies in town that rent bicycles .

Here is what we’d personally recommend doing if you choose to bike the Gap of Dunloe:

Electric bike + boat tour combo (€75 / $80 USD)

Killarney Bike Rental offers the perfect package for those who want to experience the Gap of Dunloe on two wheels.

  • You will pick up your e-bike from the shop in the morning and will cycle to Ross Castle.
  • From here, you will take a boat across the lake where you’ll be dropped off at Lord Brandon’s Cottage .
  • You will then be able to cycle the Gap of Dunloe (one way) and back to the bike shop, where you’ll need to return the bicycle by 6 p.m.

You can book your e-bike and boat here . Alternatively, you can do this bike and boat combo with a 27-speed bike (instead of electric) for €60 (~$65 USD).

If you’d prefer to cycle the Gap both ways (without a boat), Killarney Bike Rental also offers the following:

  • Regular bikes starting at €20 per day
  • Electric bicycles starting at €45 per day

Our advice: We’d recommend reserving your bike in advance to avoid disappointment.

5. Gap of Dunloe in a Jaunting Car

Jaunting car Gap of Dunloe Ireland

A jaunting car or pony trap is a traditional horse-drawn cart that offers another mode of transportation on this stretch of road.

Dating back to the 19th century, these carts were a popular mode of transportation for up to 4 people. Today, you’ll see them at places around the Killarney area aimed at tourists – the Gap of Dunloe being one popular spot.

Interesting fact: The name jaunting cart comes from the phrase “I’m off on a jaunt”, referring to a pleasurable journey.

We’re not big on horse-drawn carriages in general because the animals are often overworked . I didn’t see enough to know whether the horses here are treated well, so I’m not sure I can recommend this method of exploring.

However, you’ll see them around, so here’s some important information:

  • Jaunting cars are lined up at both ends of the Gap of Dunloe (near Kate Kearney’s Cottage in the north and Lord Brandon’s on the south end). We were there too early in the day to see many of them, but we’ve read accounts from others who say the drivers pressure them to take a ride, kind of like gondolas in Venice.
  • Drivers of the jaunting carts are called jarvies.
  • Prices are per cart. Carts can hold 4 people, so if you’re traveling as a couple, you’ll need to share with another pair or pay for the entire cart.
  • The one-way ride takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours to complete the 7 mile (11 km) stretch in a jaunting car.
  • You can take the jaunting cars one way and hike back, or do a round-trip ride. You could also do a jaunting car plus a boat ride that gets you close to town on a tour like this one .
  • Most (good) drivers will make passengers hop out of the cart on steep inclines , as it is too hard on the horses to pull passengers uphill. Be prepared for this.
  • We’ve read that the rides can be very bumpy and hard on people who have bad backs.

6. Drive the Gap of Dunloe

Driving the Gap of Dunloe Ireland

If you have a small car, it is possible to drive the Gap of Dunloe, with a few words of warning…

You will want to get a very early start on this drive and begin before people start walking. Once there are pedestrians and horse carts, it will be very difficult (and dangerous) to drive this road.

It takes roughly 25-30 minutes to drive one-way without stopping (and encountering no other cars). This means you’d probably want to begin this drive at or before 6:30 a.m. so you have ample time and can complete the drive by 8 a.m. when people start showing up.

If you are visiting at the peak of tourist season (July and August), we’d recommend starting your drive even earlier (around 5:30 a.m.). The nice thing about starting that early is you’ll be able to watch the sunrise on your drive.

  • Don’t attempt this drive in a large vehicle
  • Don’t start your drive after 7 a.m.

Gap of Dunloe horse Ireland

Now that you (hopefully!) know how you will be visiting this area, here are some tips to ensure you have a great stay!

1. Get there early

I know I sound like a broken record by now, but truly, I think our experience was so good because we were there before all the crowds. We literally stood at Black Lake for 20 minutes and only saw one other person.

The other reason it’s important to get here as early as possible is that the parking lot can fill up . There are lots of spaces (even large enough for a motorhome, if you’re renting a campervan like we did!). However, during the busy season, it can be difficult to get a spot if you arrive later in the day.

If at all possible, make this the very first stop of your day.

Alternatively, late evening hours (around sunset) may also be less crowded. But then you’re really in a time crunch to get back before dark.

2. Come with a plan

Ireland map

Before just showing up here, be sure you know how you plan to visit this area.

You should have all the info you need to choose one of these 6 ways to see the Gap of Dunloe .

If you plan to rent a bike, take a boat, or book a tour, you will need to make reservations in advance . And if you’re walking, you will need to plan your day according to how far you plan to hike.

3. Cell service can be spotty

This is a mountain pass, so expect cell signal to be spotty. This is yet another reason why you should come with a plan.

Also, it’s always a good idea to download the offline version of Google Maps so you have GPS access.

4. Pack water and snacks

Gap of Dunloe Ireland

If you’re planning to do the entire hike, be sure you’re prepared with enough water and snacks. It is a long walk, after all!

Psst! Here are our favorite hiking snacks .

5. Bring sun protection and rain gear

There’s not much shade along the way, so be sure you bring sun protection – a hat, sunglasses, layers, and sunscreen .

Additionally, pack rain gear – yes, even if it’s not in the forecast. Ireland can surprise you with a downpour when you least expect it! In addition to a raincoat, you may also want to bring a dry bag to keep your valuables from getting soaked .

Psst! We know it can be overwhelming packing for a trip to a new destination – especially one with unpredictable weather like Ireland. That’s why we spent hours creating this  free Ireland packing list PDF download just for you!

6. Give yourself more time than you’d think

Gap of Dunloe Ireland

Unless you are going on a guided tour where they have the timing down to a science, be sure to add some buffer time to however long you expect things to take.

When it comes to hiking, the estimated times don’t include stops, and you will definitely want to stop for photos or to take in the view.

This is especially important if you need to catch a boat or a shuttle at a specific time.

Bridge Gap of Dunloe Ireland

Still have questions? We’ve got answers!

How hard is the Gap of Dunloe walk?

There are both easy and hard versions of this hike.

If you hike from the parking lot to the Wishing Bridge and back , this is an easy hike. In total, your walking time is roughly 30 minutes, and there’s little elevation gain (less than 200 feet).

However, if you hike the entire Gap of Dunloe , this would be considered a moderate to difficult hike. You will encounter much more elevation gain; plus, it’s a pretty long hike, so your stamina will be tested.

It’s also worth noting that this walk is on pavement , so some people report that their knees feel more sore than they’re used to when hiking on trails.

Can I do this with a child?

Gap of Dunloe lake Ireland

Absolutely!

We walked part of the Gap of Dunloe (to the Wishing Bridge) with our 1.5-year-old daughter. If you’re traveling with a baby or small child, this is how we’d recommend visiting.

Can I walk the Gap of Dunloe and drive the Ring of Kerry in 1 day?

Yes, if you do the short walk (not the entire Gap), you can pair it with the Ring of Kerry, but it will be an absolutely packed day !

We (sort of) did this. We started our day at the Gap of Dunloe and did the walk to the Wishing Bridge. Then we drove half of the Ring of Kerry.

We expected to complete the whole thing, but ended up camping near the Kerry Cliffs because we had made lots of spontaneous stops that took longer than we thought (like building sandcastles at a beach and taking a luxurious seaweed bath!).

Had we not stopped so many places, we could have completed the entire thing; so yes, it is possible.

Things to do nearby

Torc Waterfall Killarney National Park Ireland

While you’re in the area, there are plenty of things to do.

You’re very close to the vibrant town of Killarney, just a stone’s throw from Killarney National Park, and at the start (or end, depending on how you do it!) of the Ring of Kerry.

  • Drive the Ring of Kerry
  • Drive Moll’s Gap
  • Explore Killarney National Park
  • See Torc Waterfall
  • Visit Muckross House & Gardens

This region is truly mesmerizing and full of adventure. Be sure to check out our guide to the best things to do in Killarney .

Where to eat near the Gap of Dunloe

Coffee Pot Cafe scones Gap of Dunloe Ireland

If you find your tummy rumbling or you’re in need of grub to fuel up before or after the hike, here are your options:

Kate Kearney’s Cottage

Kate Kearney’s Cottage is an iconic family-run restaurant that has been operating for more than 150 years. Come for traditional Irish fare and a great atmosphere.

This is also just beside the parking lot and is often referred to as the start of this walk, so you’ll see this restaurant mentioned many times in this article.

Good to know: They open at 10:30 a.m., and since we started our day here early, they weren’t yet open when we visited. If you are visiting the Gap of Dunloe early (which we recommend), see the next spot for our recommendation.

The Coffee Pot Cafe

Coffee Pot Cafe Gap of Dunloe Ireland

With lots of baked goods and breakfast items, this is a good choice if you’re visiting the Gap early (in order to beat the crowds!).

This is where we personally grabbed coffee and scones, as Kate Kearney’s was not yet open. The scones were some of the best we had in Ireland!

When we visited in June 2023, there was a coffee truck parked at Black Lake. They served a variety of drinks, making it a good spot to grab a pick-me-up with a view.

I can’t find information about this truck online, but I imagine it may only be open seasonally (in the summer).

Lord Brandon’s Cottage

Located at the southern end of the Gap of Dunloe, this can be a nice place to stop for a little bite at the start or end of your walk (or midway point if you’re doing the full 14 miles out and back).

Reviewers say the menu and food are quite basic, but it’s the only option in the area and the views are lovely. Be sure to have cash on hand, as reviews claim this is the only way to pay here.

A trip through the Gap of Dunloe

A 'must do" tour through the Gap of Dunloe

Gap of Dunloe Tour Map

The Deros coach will transfer you to Kate Kearney's Cottage, from where you can "Walk The Gap" to Lord Brandon's cottage for lunch. After lunch it's back to town by boat with magnificent views of the lakes and Killarney National Park.

Considering a walking, rambling or hiking tour along with a fantastic boat ride through the Lakes of Killarney among spectacular scenery? Then, look no further than a Deros tour to the Gap of Dunloe (from Irish: Dún Lóich, meaning “Lóich’s stronghold”, otherwise known as Bearna an Choimín, meaning “gap of the common land”). The Gap is a narrow mountain pass between Macgillycuddy’s Reeks (west) and Purple Mountain (east). Your hike is just under seven miles long and takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Alternatively, take a Pony & Carriage through the Gap. The Gap of Dunloe Ponymen Association provide this service, and Deros Tours accepts no liability for their use. The driver, pony and carriage charge is €35 per person and is paid directly to the driver. Please note the ride may involve a short walk as you pass through the Gap.

Within the gap are five lakes: Coosaun Lough, Black Lake, Cushnavally Lake, Auger Lake, and Black Lough (north to south). The River Loe connects these lakes. The "Wishing Bridge" is an old arch bridge between the first two lakes, and wishes made on the bridge are destined to come true.

Once through the Gap, you may take lunch at Lord Brandon's Cottage (payable directly).

Boats are waiting on the Gearhameen River for the homeward journey via the enchanting Upper, Middle and Lower Lakes of Killarney to the historic Ross Castle, where transport awaits for the short trip back to Killarney town.

If one would like to stay and visit the Castle or walk through the National Park to Killarney, which is a lovely walk of 2 kilometres, please advise a group member to avoid any delays at Ross Castle for the return transfer to Killarney.

A great day out for folks of all ages and fitness levels. Please note: The Gap of Dunloe Tour operates from March to October. However, should you wish to book it at any time of the year, don't hesitate to contact the office, and we will do our best to facilitate you.

jaunting tour gap of dunloe

How to see the Gap of Dunloe jaunting car PLUS boat tour! (photos!) (2024)

A trip to the famous Gap of Dunloe (Dún Lóich) is a must-do activity for anyone traveling to County Kerry, Ireland.

*Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links, for more information see my terms and conditions page.
