As the home of 35 colleges and universities, Boston is a magnet for those on the college touring circuit. We’ve outlined a four-day itinerary with some of the most frequently requested schools, but there are plenty of others to consider. We suggest staying in the Back Bay area of the city, which makes a great home base for exploration. Many sites are walkable from here, but Boston’s subway, known as the T, is an easy way to get around.

Be sure to give ample focus to the fun aspects of the trip. Days with your soon-to-be college student are dwindling, so try to make this as much of a chance to savor your time together as to identify next steps. More tips about timing, general pace and how to approach college touring can be found in our New York-area edition , the first in this series.

Boston College Tour Vacation Ideas

Northeastern University is a private research university founded in 1898. It is extremely well located, a stone’s throw from Back Bay, and makes a great place to start. Northeastern is known for its strong co-op program that integrates classroom knowledge with professional experience.  Look for the tunnel system that connects some of the major academic buildings for use during inclement weather. Without making it a big issue, this is a way to get a feel for your student’s take on attending school in an area where cold weather is definitely a factor.

For lunch, try local institution Chicken Lou’s. Word on the street is that you should try a TKO: baked chicken, melted Swiss, bacon and honey mustard.

In the afternoon, explore the area around Boston Common. An excellent option is the Freedom Trail, a 2 1/2-mile journey that connects 16 historically significant sites related to the American Revolution. Either opt for a 90-minute tour or explore on your own; keep an eye out for the signature red line connecting each stop.

If you still have energy to burn, head out on a sunset kayaking tour through Paddle Boston on the nearby Charles River. You’ll be treated to fabulous views of the area and glimpses of many local schools.

Commonly called BU, Boston University is a private school situated along the Charles River in the Fenway-Kenmore and Allston neighborhoods. BU boasts a tremendous number of noted alumni — Alexander Graham Bell even invented the telephone in a BU lab. The school serves more 30,000 students and the Boston University Terriers compete in NCAA Division I sports.

For lunch, try Mei Mei. This creative Chinese spot started as a food truck and after gaining popularity, established a brick-and-mortar restaurant. Or go healthy and try By Chloe for creative vegan food.

In the afternoon, explore the Back Bay neighborhood and Copley Place. Window shop along Newbury Street with its trendy stores and art galleries. Keep an eye out for artisanal doughnut shop Blackbird if you need to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Tonight, take in a Boston Red Sox game or a tour of Fenway Park. Known as “America’s favorite ball park” and home to the Green Monstah, Fenway is an iconic outing. Try a brown butter lobster roll at Eventide Fenway or look for the Green Monstah ice cream sandwich from the Cookie Monstah truck.

Next up is Boston College . This private Jesuit school in Chestnut Hill is nicknamed “The Heights” because of its hilltop location. Explore the campus and then have lunch at student favorites Eagle’s Deli or Crazy Dough’s pizza.

For the remainder of the day, explore the popular Quincy Market Complex, including Faneuil Hall, the meeting hall and marketplace dating back to 1743 and known as the “cradle of liberty.” Stroll through the stores, try some authentic Boston “chowdah” and settle in to watch the sights and all of the street performers.

If you’re looking for a different vibe, go hang on the grown-up tire shaped swings at the highly Instagrammable Lawn on D in the Seaport District, the city’s tech hub.

Today is devoted to visiting Harvard University . As the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States, this Ivy League school hardly needs introduction. Harvard’s notable alumni range from Nobel Prize winners to Rhodes Scholars as well as eight U.S. presidents. Located in Cambridge just over the Charles River, the campus is known for its ornate architecture, styled similarly to colleges in England.

Leave time to soak up the atmosphere in Harvard Yard, where all freshman live and which is home to student events. Then spend some time in Harvard Square with its cafes, shops and restaurants. Don’t forget to check out Harvard Coop, the official campus bookstore, for souvenirs. For lunch try Mr. Bartley’s, a throwback burger joint that has been serving since the 1960s.

Spend the rest of the day taking it all in along the banks of the Charles at Riverbend Park or head back to Back Bay for some more city exploration.

TIP: Unstructured time such as shopping or sitting in a park is a great chace to let your student talk at their leisure about reactions to different schools, campuses and approaches to higher learning. It is easiest to have these gut-check conversations when a bit of time has passed and you are not on campus but all of the experiences are still fresh. Don’t force it, just let the conversations happen.

Tonight, cap off the trip with dinner and jazz at the The Beehive, an all-ages venue named one of the top 100 jazz clubs in the world.

Based on time, interests and the desire for a contrasting look at some smaller schools, consider adding (or replacing) visits to Tufts University , Babson College , Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) , Brandeis University or noted women’s college Wellesley .

College Visit Guide: Boston

Tips for families to maximize their college visit to Boston, which is the college-visit capital of the country.

Boston: home of the Red Sox, clam chowder and what would appear to be a college or university on every corner. In the Greater Boston Area, there are more than 100 schools. While this figure may be overwhelming for those interested in a Beantown education, here’s a guide to help you plan a visit to several campuses on one trip with ease.

In the fall, September and October are the best months to visit. School is in session, the leaves are changing color, the weather is cool and mild. If possible, try to avoid busy holidays like Columbus Day and Veterans Day. In the spring, April is an excellent time to visit, but check each school's spring break calendar and avoid the hotel reservation hassle of the Boston Marathon.

Where to stay

If you stay in the heart of the city you can get a feeling for the community surrounding each campus and utilize the subway (the T) to quickly get around. Centrally located hotels, with access to both the subway and the turnpike (if you’d like to include schools in neighboring suburbs), include the Boston Marriott Copley Place , Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel and the more affordable Midtown Hotel (rates start at $89). When you make your reservation, inquire about a campus visit discount. Many hotels offer them.

What to see—sample itinerary

Here’s a travel plan for a two- to three-day tour of the major schools in the Boston/Cambridge metropolitan area; with travel times, distances and points of interest for each.

Start at Northeastern University , in the heart of the city. Enjoy the unusual abundance of green space on the urban campus, explore the underground tunnels linking campus building or take a walk through the surrounding Fenway Cultural District.

Afterward, head north to Boston University , about 15 minutes away (1.7 miles). If it’s warm, join students hanging out at the “BU Beach” behind Marsh Plaza. The Allston neighborhood near campus, nicknamed “Allston Rock City” for the many resident artists and musicians, has a wide selection of cafes and music venues. Or, head south of campus to the Brookline neighborhood for an independent film screening or book reading.

Go across the Charles River, about 10 minutes (1.3 miles) north of Boston University to reach Massachusetts Institute of Technology . While MIT is renowned for academic achievements, the campus itself has not been given much credit. However, Frank Gehry’s Stata Center, Steven Holl’s Simmons Hall or Charles Correa’s Building 46 are all interesting architectural additions worthy of a look.

Staying in Cambridge, head 10 to 15 minutes (2.1 miles) north to Harvard University . The world-renowned institution centers on Harvard Yard, full of academic buildings, administrative offices, main libraries and most of the freshman dorms. The adjacent Harvard Square offers an array of shops and restaurants. Visit the Grolier Poetry Bookshop or the Harvard Coop (now run by Barnes and Noble).

Drive out to one or two of the schools in the surrounding suburbs. Boston College is six miles from downtown Boston in Chestnut Hill; simply enjoy a walk around this campus known as “Oxford in America.” Brandeis University is nine miles outside of Boston in Waltham; while there, be sure to visit Usen Castle, a national historic landmark that features quirks like staircases to nowhere. Tufts University is six miles north in Medford; visit the Aidekman Arts Center here.

User Comments

As a Boston area hotel salesperson (full disclosure) I would recommend trying to plan your trip not in Sept/Oct when demand and rates are at their highest and the same for May (graduation time) Early-March -April or the Summer or November to early December are all lower-rated times. Besides college tours there is so much to see and do make it a vacation and bring the family.

Your Everything Guide to Studying Abroad at BU

Illustration of a Boston terrier in the middle of a circle with travel accessories floating around its head, like suitcases and a passport. Text reads "Your everything guide"

Should I do it? When’s the deadline? What are the most popular programs? (Hints: G’day, how’s your French, and do you like fish and chips?)

Rich barlow.

This is the second in an occasional series of helpful guides for BU readers.

Studying in Boston this semester, you can observe cultural customs, like catching a Boston Bruins game, eating clam chowder, and speaking the local language (it’s pronounced “chowda”). Last spring, Beaujena Stoyanchev (Pardee’24) opted for study a little farther afield—in Chile—where her classes were in Spanish, not Bostonian, where she savored a completo italiano (hot dog with avocado, tomato, and mayo), and where she rock-climbed in the Andes.

Immersion in the region revealed how little she knew about it, despite her previous classroom studies in international relations. While others might find that experience stressful, Stoyanchev loved it.

“I learned even more observing art on street corners, in my daily commute, at the dinner table with my host family, in cab rides from the airport,” Stoyanchev says. Chile suffers lingering trauma from its 20th-century dictatorship, and “the shadows and strengths that the population has derived from this experience are something that I had read about countless times prior to my arrival,” she says, “but something I understood completely differently once I was immersed.” Traveling has filled her with “a new kind of empathy and worldview that I could not have developed in the familiar.”

“Studying abroad can be one of the most meaningful experiential learning opportunities,” says Willis Wang , vice president and associate provost for BU Global Programs. “You often experience not only other cultures, environments, and an enriching diversity of people with new perspectives, but you also discover that you are capable of achieving more than you ever expected.”

Because travel, especially for weeks, an entire semester, or longer, must be planned, BU Today has compiled Study Abroad’s answers to frequently asked questions about packing your bags, and your education, for another country.

Where can I go?

There are 83 possible programs awaiting you in locations from A to Z. Well, to U anyway, as in United States (in addition to foreign locations, Study Abroad oversees programs and internships in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.). Australia, China, Europe, Ecuador, Mexico, the Middle East, Asia, South Africa, New Zealand—through BU, the world is your oyster. “Based on applications,” Wang says, “London and Paris seem to continue being some of our most popular sites these days, with Madrid and Sydney being close on their heels.”

What are the deadlines for applying?

March 1 for the coming summer term; March 15 for fall semester; and either September 15 or October 1 for next spring semester, depending on the program. However, Study Abroad’s website notes, “It is often possible to apply after the program deadline, on a space available basis. We can accept applications for most programs until the program is full; note that most of our programs use rolling admissions, that is, applications are reviewed as they come in.” For more information, check the application calendar .

How do I decide whether Study Abroad is right for me?

The program offers a list of planning considerations . But you should start by asking yourself some questions. What areas of study do you want to pursue? Are you flexible about when you can study abroad? Have you considered alternate program options so you are prepared if you are not accepted into your first choice program?

Also, there are some key considerations: overseas studies programs vary in frequency, with some offered every semester and others during one semester only. Last, and important, point—make sure you have a passport that’s valid for six months beyond your planned travel date. There are ways to expedite an expired passport, but don’t wait. Do it now, even if you don’t know your plans.

boston college travel

If I just want to sound out somebody about their experience abroad, who do I connect with?

Student ambassadors , veterans of foreign study, make great information sources. Call or email Study Abroad (617-353-9888 or [email protected]) to connect with one.

Which subjects may I study abroad?

Which can’t you? From Study Abroad’s website: “We operate language, liberal arts, fine arts, science, STEM, and internship programs, all fully approved by Boston University.” Students with all majors study overseas; some have offerings in their particular major, while others study something outside their major via an internship or for an enhanced education.

Where will I live when I’m overseas? Is that my responsibility or does the program arrange that for me?

That depends on the program and site. Possibilities include university housing, or local apartments, or staying in the homes of local families, or living with fellow students on the program. Check Study Abroad’s housing information .

Does BU restrict me to just one semester abroad?

This one’s easy: no!

College is already expensive. Is Study Abroad then even more expensive? What about financial aid?

Actually, tuition and housing are generally comparable to what you pay on the Charles River Campus. And most financial aid can be used for Study Abroad programs in the fall and spring semesters. The general, and big, exception is work study. Tuition scholarships will be based on the tuition portion of the program fee. On all these issues, check with your assistant director in the Office of Financial Assistance.

boston college travel

May I list more than one program on my application?

You can—and you should. It’s a good idea to list a second and even third choice on your application, Study Abroad says, because “We cannot always accommodate every student on their first choice program.” The reason for this is that space is limited in some programs, and of course some programs and certain semesters are more popular than others. So it’s best to have options and be flexible.

You sold me: I’m flying. What do I need to apply?

All programs require an application questionnaire; advisor form, which has instructions on the appropriate form-filer; recommendations from a professor, teaching assistant (TA), or teaching fellow (TF) who has taught you for a letter grade in a college-level class; your résumé; a nonrefundable one-time application fee of $55; transcript(s) (unless you’re a transfer student who submitted transfer grades to BU’s registrar), with non-BU students sending their transcripts to [email protected] or via mail.

Those are the basics. Different programs may require specific additional materials. Please note that because of the volume of applications Study Abroad cannot confirm receipt of each and every document you send. Consult the “Check Application” tab of your online application for updates: the green checkmarks correspond to items that the office has received and processed.

Per Study Abroad, regarding the advisor form and recommendation: “Non-BU students should have this form completed by the person at their home institution responsible for approving study abroad transfer credit and may want to discuss with the study abroad office at their home institution to determine the appropriate advisor. Non-BU students should note that there may be a separate summer program approval process at their institutions.”

I’ve applied. Now what?

Most programs use rolling admissions: applications are reviewed as they are completed, prior to all deadlines. Apply early; some programs and internships have limited space and may fill up before the deadline. Students will receive an emailed admissions decision within three weeks of a completed application. Some programs don’t use rolling admissions, and their applicants receive an admissions decision after the program deadline.

Be prepared to travel vast distances to watch Syracuse men’s basketball next season: ACC announces new opponents

  • Updated: Mar. 03, 2024, 3:05 a.m. |

Syracuse Orange Men's Basketball 2023-24: Syracuse vs Notre Dame and Jim Boeheim Day

Syracuse Orange forward Maliq Brown (1) chases down an errant Notre Dame pass. The Syracuse men’s basketball team take on Notre Dame at the JMA Wireless Dome Feb. 24, 2024. (Dennis Nett | [email protected]) [email protected]

Syracuse, N.Y. -- Add Notre Dame to the Syracuse men’s basketball “partners” for next season.

The Orange will play Pittsburgh, Boston College and now Notre Dame home and away for the 2024-25 season.

The ACC revealed its 2024-25 schedule today on the ACC Network. With the addition of Stanford, Cal and SMU, Syracuse will do plenty of traveling. The Orange will play every one of those teams on the road next year. (We’d assume there will be some sort of schedule pairing that keeps SU on the West Coast for both of those games.)

The Orange, on the whole, will travel vast distances in general next season. They go to California, Texas and Florida. SU is the only team that will play every new ACC program on the road next year.

Interestingly, the combination of Duke (at SMU) and North Carolina (nobody) plays a total of one new long-distance conference road game next season.

Also, there are four ACC schools in the state of North Carolina. Syracuse will play none of them on the road next year.

Here’s how it will shake out next season:

Home/Away: Boston College, Pitt, Notre Dame

Home: Duke, Georgia Tech, Louisville, North Carolina, NC State, Virginia, Wake Forest

Away: Cal, Clemson, Florida State, Miami, SMU, Stanford, Virginia Tech

Here’s a handy graphic of the entire conference’s schedules for next year. Dates will come later.

Study Abroad

  • Activities & Organizations

Boston College students participate in programs of study in more than 30 countries worldwide, sponsored either by BC or other institutions of higher learning.

Office of Global Education

International study has become more and more popular among Boston College students and Communication majors as students realize the increasing importance of broadening their intercultural perspectives. We are communicating in a global marketplace and it is ever so important to be able to help cross cultural lines with our spoken and written words.

Students who are interested in studying abroad should contact the Office of Global Education for more information on specific programs and application procedures. Typically, juniors study abroad during the spring semester; however, there are certain exceptions that can be made for placement during the fall semester of junior year.

Semester Abroad Requirements

The Communication Department requires majors to have completed seven courses in Communication by the end of their junior year. This leaves no more than four courses to be completed during senior year. Among those courses required prior to travel are the four Core courses: Rhetorical Tradition, Survey of Mass Communication, Public Speaking, and Communication Methods. In addition, we strongly suggest juniors take one of their two required writing intensive seminars in the fall of their junior year, before travel. This is to allow for the second to be completed senior year. A student may transfer up to two courses in Communication as ELECTIVES from the Study Abroad placement, which counts toward the seven total courses needed by the end of junior year. These courses must be pre-approved by the Director of Undergraduate Studies, Prof. Lindsay Hogan .
