Manang Tilicho Lake Trek

Manang Tilicho Lake Trek

  • Trip Overview

Manang Tilicho Lake is an amazing trek that showers you with a wide variety of natural excitement. This trek takes you to visit beautiful Manang valley with the desert-like wild terrain and then Tilicho Lake, considered as the world’s highest lake located at 4,920 meters from sea level. Indeed Manang Tilicho lake trek is one of the most spectacular trekking routes in the world with lush green valleys, fascinating villages, and arid landscape offering impressive snow-capped views of the white Himalayas.

Manang opened for foreign trekkers in 1977, is one of the most beautiful hidden valleys and villages of the Himalayan territory. This valley is inhabited by ethnic group people like Gurung and Magar who mostly follow Buddhism. It is enriched with lively traditions of ancient heritage. The isolated valley is the best place to admire the views of mountains like Chulu range, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, Kangaru Peak, and Throng peak.

Manang to Tilicho Lake Trek

The trek begins from less than 1,000 meters, it gives us a chance to explore the Himalayan region from bottom to top and from many different angles and perspectives. Besi Sahar is the starting point of this trek. In the beginning, the trail follows the Marshyangdi River, with great views of Manaslu and Himal Chuli to the east.

Eventually, the trek leads you to the different villages, inhabited by a wide diversity of people from different ethnic groups, offering spectacular and majestic views of the Himalayas. After reaching Chame, the headquarter town of Manang district, you then trek into lovely cool woodland of pines and rhododendron tree lines and then green vegetation fades for the arid and barren country to reach Manang village. Manang has located at the high and dry Tibetan Plateau which the scenery is equally breathtaking.

Manang is the best place for trekkers who are crossing Thorong La Pass and also go to visit Tilicho Lake.  There are many interesting places to visit in Manang. The most popular is to visit the glacier lake at the slopes of the Gangapurna Mountain, the village of Braga, Buddhist monastery.  From Manang, you trek a further couple of days to reach Tilicho Lake. Then you retrace to Manang. While back from Manang you take a jeep ride to Besisahar. From Besi Sahar, you drive to Kathmandu by bus.

Manang Tilicho Trek is a moderate type of trek. It is neither very demanding nor less demanding. However, you should be fairly fit and should be able to endure long walks uphill and downhill.

In summary, the major highlights of the Manang Tilicho Lake trek are as below:

Manang Valley Trekking is a wonderful journey through the mixed landscapes of subtropical forest to arid barren landscapes until 4900m, encountering multiple old Buddhist monasteries portraying the cultural aspects of the area and the magnificence of the beautiful Valley and High Himalayas, which are second to none.

The major attraction of Manang Trek is to explore the hidden gems in Manang Valley locale like tranquil lakes formed at high elevation, sweeping mountain glaciers, ancient Gompas offering a great view, local villages etc. Despite following the classical Annapurna Circuit trekking route towards Thorang La Pass (5416m) from Manang, this trip will take you the world highest Tilicho Lake at 4919m passing through the Khangsar village (also known as the last village of Nepal) lying on the west ridge of Valley.

Trekking to Manang is an awesome experience to encounter different ethnic groups in several villages along the route and the mountain sights while passing through beautiful forest and open dry landscapes are just impressive. Manang valley is remote yet one of the beautiful valley offering breathtaking views of Himalayas crowded with several ancient Buddhist heritage, caves, glaciers and lakes and the inhabited people with distinct cultural practices enjoying their exciting festivals.

Following the footsteps of Annapurna circuit route, the trail passes through beautiful waterfalls visible from Ghermu, Tal and Chyamche village and the green lush vegetation until it starts getting dry & barren at Upper Pisang. The majestic view of Lamjung, Manaslu and Annapurna is awesome from the Upper Gompa monastery. Then, we follow the upper route via Ghyaru and Ngawal village enjoying the panorama in front of our eyes to reach Manang valley after a quick visit to Bhrakha monastery.

On reaching Manang, we will rest and stroll around the village just to feel the air.  The next day, we shall make a packed lunch day trip to Kicho Lake which calmly rests at 4600m with a good view of surrounding landscapes and mountain and also good for acclimatization. Hike to Bodzo Gompa, located at the northern cliff is best to capture the best photograph of gorgeous Manang Valley dominating by the Mt. Annapurna III and Gangapurna.

Out of several places of interest in Manang valley, our three days excursion to western ridge of Valley will take us to Tilicho Lake – highest lake in the world and also sacred as per Hindu beliefs will allow you to immerse into the wild beauty of nature and leave you speechless. We will retrace our path all the way to Manang and then continue from barren lands towards green forest collecting all memories in our mind and camera leaving only footprints behind.

Best Time to Visit Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek

You must be wondering about the best time to visit Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake. Any time you visit will give you new experiences and memories. These routes are challenging so it depends on which season you would like to do the trek.

Nepal has four seasons i.e. Spring, Monsoon, Autumn, and Winter. Below we have provided you some information about these seasons:

Spring (March to May)

This is the season for a new beginning when you get to witness the valley slowly getting its greenery back. During these months the routes are crowded with trekkers.

The weather and temperature are just favorable with clear blue skies. You get to see flowers blooming throughout the forest trails. And also hear the sounds of birds chirping. If you are a nature lover this time of the year is just perfect.

Autumn (September to November)

This is the peak season of the year when nature gets enhanced beautifully. Along with it, the crowd reaches its maximum limit. During these months the beauty of nature that you witness will be astounding.

Already bloomed flora and fauna and the clear view of snowy peaks you get to see in these trails are just mesmerizing. But the crowded routes can be a disadvantage for this season. Finding proper rooms can be a bit difficult.

Winter (December to February)

These months are the coldest month of the year. The routes are filled with snow and the lakes are frozen during this time of the year.

The weather is warm during the day but as the sun sets it tends to get chilly by the moment. You should carry warm clothes for this season.

If you can handle cold this season is perfect for you. The mountain peaks covered with snow look quite remarkable.

Monsoon (June to August)

This season is when heavy downpours make the routes challenging in the lower region. During these months, the paths are slippery and muddy, also you will see leeches along the way.

There are high chances of landslides and flood during this time. Also, the raincloud blurs out the vision of Mountain peaks. But you get to see new species of Flora and Fauna due to continuous rainfall. These routes are filled with the researcher during the Monsoon season.

If you are thinking of trekking during these months then you should carry raincoat and boots along with you.

Manang Trek

Manang-Trek-IV

Manang is one the most beautiful hidden valley of South Asia- which can be conquered in a Manang Trek. It is a Nepalese village which is approximately 250 km from the national capital Kathmandu.

It is far from the capital but no one can feel that it is in far remote distance. This is because the available facilities can match the one of Shangri-La. Manang (3540m) is one of the largest villages in Manang district and one of the last trekking stops for trekkers walking the famous Annapurna Circuit trek.

From Manang the route continues to Thorung La (pass) at 5415 meters above the sea level which connects Manang district to Mustang District by providing a route between the town of Manang and the village  Muktinath . This part of trail of Manang trek to Muktinath has been used by the locals for hundreds of years to transport huge herds of sheep and yak in and out of Manang.

The northern part of town is more preserved in its old style; in the southern part you will find many hotels, shops and even a cybercafe, with satellite internet connection.

Manangies are well-known traders and many of them are relatively rich having property in both Manang and Kathmandu and their children study in good schools or even abroad.

Exploring Tilicho Lake Trek 12-Day Itinerary

The Tilicho Lake Trek is a renowned hiking route nestled within the captivating Annapurna region of Nepal. This trek stands out for its breathtaking views of the Annapurna mountain range and the pristine Tilicho Lake, situated at one of the highest altitudes in the world. The trek to Tilicho Lake, perched at an elevation of 4,919 meters ( or 4,949 meters according to other sources ), boasts an expanse of approximately 1.853 square miles. It sits majestically in front of the towering Tilicho Peak and is surrounded by numerous smaller peaks along the border between the Annapurna and Manaslu Ranges. The lake’s azure glacier waters, shrouded in mystery due to their unseen source of discharge, draw numerous trekkers to its shores. The journey to Tilicho Lake spans about 3-4 days from Manang village and is a challenging and adventurous trek within the Annapurna region.

The Tilicho Lake Trek presents an unparalleled adventure in the Annapurna region, as it leads trekkers through one of the most remote areas in this region. This trek is recommended for those seeking an adventurous and demanding experience. After reaching Tilicho Lake, trekkers must cross the formidable Thorung LA pass , the final pass along the Annapurna Circuit.

Close by the Tilicho Lake trek lies the renowned Annapurna Circuit , and among Nepalis, there exists an oral tradition that completing the Annapurna Circuit without reaching Tilicho Lake leaves the journey unfinished.

Tilicho Lake Trek Difficulty

The Tilicho Lake trek is rated as moderately difficult, primarily due to the high altitude it reaches. Over 12 days, trekkers ascend to an elevation of over 3,000 meters, remaining at this altitude for an extended duration. This exposes trekkers to various risks, including altitude sickness, extreme cold, unpredictable weather conditions, and navigating narrow and challenging trails. Despite these challenges, the trek offers standard facilities such as food and accommodation along the way, providing much-needed respite at the end of each day, thus alleviating some of the hardships of the journey.

Tilicho Holy Lake as a Pilgrimage Site

Tilicho Lake Trek holds immense spiritual significance for both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims in Nepal. According to Hindu mythology, the lake is linked to the sage Vyas, who is believed to have meditated at its shores. It is also associated with the Pandavas, the heroes of the Indian epic Mahabharata, who are said to have visited the lake during their exile. For Buddhists, Tilicho Lake holds special significance as it is associated with the revered Tibetan master Milarepa, who is believed to have meditated in this sacred place.

Every year, during the full moon of August, which is considered an auspicious time, a multitude of Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims flock to Tilicho Lake. They perform rituals, offer prayers, and take a purifying dip in the icy waters of the lake. Surrounding the lake, ancient monasteries and temples beckon pilgrims from around the world.

The Tilicho Trek is a popular pilgrimage route, attracting devotees from both Hindu and Buddhist traditions. Many trekkers also take the opportunity to visit temples and monasteries along the way, including the revered Muktinath Temple, dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu, and considered one of Nepal’s most important pilgrimage sites. This trek provides a unique opportunity for spiritual reflection and communion with nature, making it a sought-after destination for those seeking a spiritual journey in the Himalayas.

Commencing the Tilicho Lake Trek

The journey to Tilicho Lake Trek itinerary begins in Chame, located at an altitude of 2,715 meters. On the third day, trekkers reach Manang village, perched at an elevation of 3,341 meters. This village is inhabited by the Ghale and Gurung ethnic groups. Acclimatization in Manang is essential before proceeding to Tilicho Lake and the challenging Thorong La Pass.

The subsequent days of the Tilicho Lake trek take you to Khangsar village and the base camp of Tilicho. The trail between Khangsar and Tilicho base camp can be tricky, with narrow paths and a few landslide-prone sections. Caution is advised when navigating this stretch. The trek allows you to explore the wonders of the Annapurna region, including rare mountain flora and serene glacial lakes. Ultimately, trekkers ascend to Tilicho Lake’s pristine shores, offering panoramic views of the towering Annapurna Himalayan peaks. The trail predominantly follows the Marsyangdi River, with a gradual ascent to Tilicho Lake.

Alpine Pastures Surrounding Tilicho Lake

The Tilicho Lake region is renowned for its picturesque alpine pastures, providing trekkers with a serene and captivating environment to explore. These alpine meadows feature rolling hills adorned with lush green grass and vibrant wildflowers, framed by snow-capped peaks and crystal-clear glacial lakes.

Throughout the trek to Tilicho Lake, trekkers have the opportunity to immerse themselves in these alpine pastures, soaking in the breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscapes. These pastures are also home to a diverse array of wildlife, including Himalayan thars, snow leopards, and blue sheep, which trekkers may encounter during their journey.

Furthermore, the alpine pastures in the Tilicho Lake region host traditional Nepalese communities. Many trekkers opt to stay in local homestays or guesthouses in the quaint villages along the trekking route, providing a unique opportunity to experience the local culture and warm hospitality of the people.

In summary , the alpine pastures surrounding Tilicho Lake offer trekkers a remarkable opportunity to immerse themselves in the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Nepal. Whether you seek a challenging trek or a tranquil retreat in the mountains, the alpine meadows near Tilicho Lake provide an unforgettable and rewarding experience.

Conclusion and Return Journey

Following the crossing of the Thorong La pass and a visit to Muktinath, the 12-day Tilicho Lake trek concludes in Jomsom. From there, trekkers have the option to fly back to Pokhara or take a bus if weather conditions do not permit air travel. For those with more time to spare, there is also the option to hike to Tatopani, Ghorepani Poon Hill , and return to Pokhara, allowing for a more extensive exploration of the region’s beauty.

Best Time to Embark on the Tilicho Lake Trek

The ideal time to undertake the Tilicho Lake Trek is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. During these months, the weather tends to be stable, with clear skies offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and landscapes.

In spring , mild temperatures and vibrant wildflowers carpeting the hills create a picturesque trekking experience. The weather is typically dry, with minimal chances of rainfall.

Autumn brings cool and pleasant temperatures, along with clear skies, providing perfect trekking conditions. This season follows the monsoon period, leaving the mountains lush and green, enhancing the views of the surrounding landscapes.

Marijana Jarža

The Annapurna Circuit for Soul Healing

I went to Nepal for the second time in my life during the Covid confusion. I visited Nepal in March of this year. I went on my journey alone. Rajesh Gurung, my guide from the Nepal Wilderness Company, introduced me to Mr. Himal two years ago. I usually ask for more climbing options as an insatiable, lifelong hiker. Thus, Mr. Himal organized my trip in detail, granting me, even, the trek to Tilicho Lake, Thorong La Pass, and Mardi Himal.

From Kathmandu, we took a local bus to Bessisahar, then took a jeep to Bahundanda, where we stayed overnight and began our walk the next morning. I take this opportunity to oppose some complaints relating to the replacement of some original and partly damaged pathways. In my opinion this is really, the minority issue in comparison with the natural beauty of the river Marsyangdi, gorgeous landscapes, scenes associating with another world, breathtaking views of the Annapurna range, and ancient cities that stretch along the way as you proceed your way upstream of the river;

To name just a few, Tal, Chame, Pisang, Manang, Muktinath have preserved the atmosphere of sacredness and kindness from some forgotten times in history. On the lower destinations, the weather was pleasant; sunny and warm, and snow-covered, on the Tilicho Lake (4.919 m) and Thorong La Pass (5.416), and almost tropical, on the way to Ghorepani and Ghandruk.

He has already crossed Thorong La Pass seven times in his life. He is familiar with all of the Annapurna region, and with the tea-house management staff, so that even during these times of possible reductions in transport and lodging, he can still provide quick and effective solutions. I enjoyed his company and his warm personality. His hidden strength, caution, diligence, and care had made me feel safe. I highly recommend his assistance, the advice of Mr. Himal, and the services provided by the Nepal Wilderness Company.

Therefore, we plan on gathering at our office to discuss the upcoming trek. We organize a welcome dinner today in one of the famous restaurants in town and enjoy Nepalese food.

At an early hour, our guide escorts you to the bus station to catch a vehicle towards Besisahar. Heading west by leaving the Kathmandu Valley, the journey proceeds on a winding Prithvi Highway along the Trisuli River till Dumre. From Dumre, the vehicle heads north towards Besisahar, following the Marsyangdi River. Our vehicle stops twice, once for breakfast and afterward for lunch, before achieving Besisahar. Finally, we reach Besisahar and the night will be spent at a hotel.

Day 03: Trek from Besisahar – Bahundanda (1,498 m) Following the dusty street, the trip proceeds north to Bhulbhule.  Bhulbhule welcomes us with the perspective of Manaslu, Himchuli, and Nagdi Chuli. Getting a charge out of the perspective of the mountains and the waterfall, we at that point reach the Nadi Bazaar on the trail along the Marsyangdi River. Ahead, we cross the scaffold over the Nadi River and a lofty climb past the landslide zone and last take us to Bahundanda. The remaining hours will be spent investigating throughout and the night will be spent at the hotel.

Day 04: Trek from Bahundanda – Chamje (1,410 m) Seizing the east bank of the Marsyangdi River, we descend to Syange which welcomes us with a perspective of the long waterfall. Therefore, we currently cross the extension over the Marsyangdi River and proceed on an extreme trail along the west bank of the waterway up to Jagat which welcomes us with another excellent perspective of the waterfall. After that point, a precarious walk on a trail along the waterway will, at last, take us to Chamje, which again offers an excellent perspective of a 202 m-long waterfall. The night will be spent at a hotel in Chamje.

Day 05: Trek to Chame (2,670 m) Today, we continue our walk by catching an upward steep stone case to reach beautiful Tamang village (the vantage point of Annapurna Circuit) above Danakyu to sight a 360° view of towering snow-capped mountains including Annapurna and Manaslu. After passing several pine and rhododendron forests, bridges, and settlements including Koto, we reach Chame. This night will be spent at a lodge in Chame.

Day 06: Trek to Pisang (3,060 m) After enjoying breakfast, our beginning trail is fairly easy till Bhartang thereafter we continue up the steep into the dense oak forest to step Dhikur Pokhari for inspecting the spectacular view of Pisang peak and Annapurna. Leaving Dhikur Pokhari behind, we head forward passing lower Pisang towards upper Pisang. We can explore the nearby monastery after the steeping destination of the day and the night will be spent at the lodge in Pisang.

Day 07: Trek to Manang (3,440 m) Early morning-developed trek enters the drier part of the Manang district by catching the easy route via Humde. Day to Day Itinerary

Kathmandu – bensisahar- jagat (1300m/4265ft).

Today you will leave early from Kathmandu to begin the drive to Besisahar. You can schedule your bus transportation. The road leading up to Besisahar is passably good. It takes around 6-7 hours by public bus.

After arriving at Besisahar, the route travels upriver along the rushing Marsyangdi river on a lovely trail through the lush jungle and terraced crops. Soon enough, you will travel through several rural communities and farmlands on a local jeep before arriving at the tranquil village of Jagat.

Note: If you want hassle-free travel, reserve a private Jeep from Kathmandu at extra cost

Jagat-Dharapani (1860m/6102ft)

You will reach Tal village, which lies in the Manang region, as you follow the Marsyangdi river and ascend steeply. By the sandy beaches, you can see many waterfalls forming a river.

To get to Kodo, one of the largest settlements in the Manang valley, you will travel through fields of potatoes, rice, and barley. Moving on, you will cross a suspension bridge and arrive in Dharapani after a bit of ascent of the stone Kani.

Dharapani to Chame (2670m/8760ft)

The journey from Dharapani to Chame is particularly challenging. You will immediately begin a challenging section that involves walking more than 15 kilometers and rising more than 600 meters!

Green trees will surround you, and when you glance up, Lamjung Himal, Annapurna II, and Annapurna IV will be seen in stunning detail. The path follows several rivers. Long walkways with flags are used to cross it. It takes some getting used to crossing the shaky bridge at first, but after that, it becomes enjoyable. Then you will reach Chame – the district headquarter of Manang.

Chame-Upper Pisang (3300m10827ft)

After breakfast, you will hike through a narrow valley to get your first glimpse of the Paungda Danda Rock, which the locals hold in the highest regard. A curving rock face rising 1500 meters from the Marshyandi river is known as the Paungda Danda Rock.

You can see Pisang Peak in the northeast and Annapurna II in the south from the routes. After that, your route declines, bringing you to the Pisang settlement at the bottom of the Manang Valley.

Upper Pisang -Gyaru -Ngawal(3660m)

You will travel today from Upper Pisang to Gyaru and then from Gyaru to Ngawal. You’ll start out by walking along a pleasant, easy path that even passes a tiny, remote lake that is green.

You cross a suspension bridge to go to a mani wall, which is where the notorious hill meets the settlement of Gyaru. The path frequently ascends the mountainside in sharp zigzags.

You then leave Gyaru and travel in the direction of Ngawal. The elevation is lower at Ngawal. The trail begins uphill for 500 meters before descending into the Ngawal settlement.

Ngawal – Manang (3540m/11615ft)

Along with strange, wind-sculpted boulders and stunted pines, the path from Ngawal descends back to Marsyangdi valley. There are stunning vistas of the Annapurna massifs along the way. The path then leads to Manang shortly after, passing via the lovely village of Bhraka.

Acclimatization Day in Manang

In Manang, today is a rest day. It is best to avoid sleeping at a higher altitude tonight to acclimate properly so that you will remain in Manang. You will go on an acclimatization walk to the Gangapurna viewpoint. From this viewpoint, admire the magnificent views of the Gangapurna glacial lake, Annapurna, Pisang Peak, and many others.

You can relax and take pleasure in the sun and warm cinnamon rolls. You can even go on an additional acclimatization hike and stops at Gangapurna Lake.

Manang – Shree Kharka- Tilicho Base Camp (4150m/13616ft)

Trek from Manang to Shree Kharka and then to Tilicho Base Camp

This trek is a wonderful experience for everyone. The trek starts from Manang and goes through the magnificent Himalayas. You can see the snow-capped peaks of Annapurna, Nilgiri, and many more.

Once you reach Shree Kharka, you can enjoy a delicious lunch. After that, you can continue your journey to Tilicho Base Camp.

Early morning trek to Tilicho lake(4920m) and back to Tilicho B.C. and trek to Shree Kharka

Start your trek early in the morning. You will be hiking to the top of Tilicho Lake, a beautiful lake at 4920 meters. After you have hiked to the lake, you will follow the route back to the base camp. Then you will hike back down to the base camp for lunch and then hike up Shree Kharka for an overnight stay.

Shree Kharka- Yak Kharka- Ledar(4200m/13780ft)

The trek starts from the village of Shree Kharka, situated at the foothills of the Himalayan range. The trekking trail passes through forests and meadows with diverse flora and fauna. And thus, you arrive in Yak Kharka.

The trek from Yak Kharka to Ledar is a great experience to see the mountains with their snow-covered peaks towering above you. It is a relatively easy trek as it follows the ridge line on the way up, offering great views of both sides of the valley.

Ledar – Thorung Phedi(4525m/14846ft -Highcamp(4925m/16159ft)

This trek starts from Ledar, following the route to Highcamp. The trek passes through a remote area where you’ll get to see a lot of wildlife and so many trees. Soon enough, you eventually arrive at Thorung Phedi. Here onwards, you move further to Highcamp for the overnight stay.

Highcamp – Thorung Pass (5416m/17770 ft)-Muktinath(3760m/12336ft)

Today you will walk through Thorong La Pass via Highcamp. Sheep and yaks, as well as other commercial products, have been brought in and out of Manang over this trail for hundreds of years.

The sights from the pass make the early start and ascent through the chilly air and high altitude worthwhile. Looking northward toward Tibet, we will view a panorama of magnificent Himalayan peaks and, to the rear, the Annapurna range.

The trail eventually penetrates grassy fields and meadows, gets less steep, and leads to Muktinath. Muktinath, a holy location for both Hindus and Buddhists, is a place of enlightenment in the Hindu religion that is home to a temple and several monasteries.

Muktinath – Jomsom (2720m/8924ft)

It’s fortunately not too tough to travel via picturesque Kagbeni, even with a tight back and sore legs. Even now, you still descend more than 1000 meters significantly but very gradually.

Kagbeni is a charming town with a stunning monastery and a wonderful area to explore for a day. After taking a look around the historic village, you will descend. Then you will travel to Jomson in the Kali Gandaki valley from Kagbeni.

Trekking Information

The Annapurna region is home to some of the most breathtaking views in the world. With dramatic peaks and valleys, it’s easy to see why people from all over the globe come here to escape their reality and commune with nature.

But if you’re looking for something a little more intimate? You can stay at teahouses throughout your trek at a higher altitude!

Teahouses are a popular mode of accommodation in the region and offer guests the chance to experience a traditional Nepalese meal and learn about the local culture. The teahouse owners can also provide valuable information about the local area, including where it’s safe to camp or stay overnight.

This is one of the unique accommodations you’ll find anywhere on earth. So, be sure to look into it if you’re planning on visiting this part of Nepal.

Meals on Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake

You’ll be provided breakfast, lunch, and dinner during the trek. You’ll have a chance to enjoy some tasty meals while you’re on your journey!

The food that’s provided during the trip is simple but delicious. We’ll have daal bhat as our main course at most meals. But we’ll also make sure to provide noodles or other food items if you prefer those over daal.

Drinking Water

Drinking water is easily accessible in the Annapurna region. It is available from the public taps and hand pumps. In some parts of the region, you can also find bottled water in local stores.

Medicine for purifying water is available at pharmacies and stores throughout Kathmandu. However, if you’re visiting another part of Nepal, stock up on any medicines you might need before leaving Kathmandu.

You can also buy boiled water from neighbourhood tea houses in the Annapurna region by paying an extra fee.

Phone Networks on Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake

Phone service is available in the Annapurna region, but the phone signal is not good in higher altitudes. If you’re in a remote area, our staff will work to get you connected as quickly as possible. Likewise, our staff carries cell phones with satellite reception, which can be useful for emergencies!

Internet Facility

Internet access is reliable throughout the Annapurna region. However, there may be some inconsistency or no internet access at certain locations due to the high altitude or weather conditions.

You’re good to go if you’re looking for access in Manang Valley. Just keep an eye out for the occasional problem with connectivity during high-altitude travel and at Tilicho Lake.

Starting Point of the trek

The Annapurna circuit trek begins from Besisahar and ends in Jomsom. Along the way, you’ll trek through Tilicho Lake, which is a beautiful lake nestled in the Annapurna massif.

The trek takes anywhere between 16 days to complete. You’ll need to be fit enough to carry your own equipment and food for the duration of your trip.

Essential permit

Annapurna region is a popular destination for trekkers and mountaineers alike. The area has an abundance of beautiful, pristine valleys that are perfect for exploring on foot or horseback.

Before you go trekking, though, you’ll need some permits and other documents in order to travel through government-protected areas like national parks or conservation areas. Some treks require special permits from local authorities. Here are the essential permits required for the trek:

  • Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS)
  • Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP)

For SAARC nationals, the TIMS is NPR 600 instead of NPR 2000. For SAARC nationals, the ACAP permit costs NPR 1000 instead of NPR 3,000.

Difficulties of the Trek

The Annapurna circuit with Tilicho lake trek is one of the most popular treks in Nepal. However, it isn’t for everyone. There are many things that make this trek difficult, so you should be prepared before starting out on this trip.

The altitude at which you will be trekking will be around 5000 meters above sea level, which is quite a bit higher than what most people are used to. This means that you will have to acclimatize yourself quickly and avoid altitude sickness. Moreover, this could help you in avoiding any other kind of illness that could potentially affect your health during the journey.

It is also important to get enough rest while on this journey since your body needs time to adapt itself to these higher altitudes. And it cannot do so if you don’t give it enough time to rest properly between each day’s trekking activity.

There are many different kinds of weather conditions during this trip, including rainstorms, thunderstorms, and snowfall, among others. These can make hiking through these areas challenging.

  • Travel Insurance

Annapurna Circuit is a trekking route that takes you through some of the most beautiful and untouched regions of Nepal. It’s an incredible experience that provides the perfect combination of adventure and relaxation. So, it’s no wonder that people come from all over the world to complete this circuit. But if you’re planning on doing the trek yourself, you’re going to need travel insurance in case something goes wrong.

If you’re traveling on your own, it’s important to make sure that your travel insurance covers both medical expenses and emergency evacuation from Nepal. You don’t want to be stuck there without any way to get home! And depending on where you go, things could go wrong. The weather can change at any moment. So it’s best if you have coverage for things like altitude sickness or injuries sustained during a fall down a mountain.

You should also make sure that your policy covers all types of emergencies, including weather-related events like lightning storms or landslides, natural disasters like earthquakes or flooding, etc.

We know how important it is for everyone on this trip to be safe and comfortable during their time away from home. That’s why we recommend having travel insurance so that everyone has peace of mind when they’re on the road together!

AMS and acclimatization

Annapurna circuit trek is not just a trek for adventure lovers. It is also a good choice for those who want to explore nature and enjoy the mountain view of the Annapurna region.

But before you decide to go on this journey, it is important to know about the risks involved and how to prevent them. One of the major risks associated with this trek is acute mountain sickness (AMS). AMS can occur during any altitude hike but especially at high altitudes.

Acute Mountain Sickness refers to a condition in which a person suffers from altitude sickness after going above 2500 meters or 6000 feet above sea level. It can be mild or severe, and there are no symptoms until it is too late. If diagnosed early, you may be able to prevent more serious problems from occurring.

To prevent AMS during an Annapurna circuit trek with Tilicho Lake, it is important that you acclimatize your body by slowly increasing your altitude over several days so that you don’t overdo it too quickly! The best way to do this is by taking frequent breaks at lower altitudes while hiking up until you reach your destination.

Best Time to Travel

Spring and Autumn are the perfect seasons for the Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake. The finest opportunity to see rhododendrons in full bloom and to spot the most exquisite birds is around the months of March-May. Similarly, during the time of September-November, everything is colourful and alive again as a result of the tiny bit of rain that the Annapurnas receive.

When it comes to climbing the Annapurna, winter is the most challenging season. The Thorung La Pass is closed due to the winter weather. However, this does not necessarily imply that you cannot perform or finish the circuit. Likewise, during the summer season, the Annapurna Circuit lies in a rain shadow, so it is ideal for hiking in the rainy season.

Luggage Limit for Porter

If you’re planning on doing a trek on this route, you’ll need to hire a porter to carry your luggage for you. There are two different options for how much weight you can have them carry: 20 kilograms or 22 kilograms.

Porters will carry your bag up steep inclines and over uneven surfaces without complaining about it being too heavy. They will also carry your bag back down after you have made it through difficult parts of the route with ease!

Trip Safety

If you’re planning on trekking in Nepal, you’ll want to make sure your trip is as safe as possible. That’s why we’ve put together this handy guide for staying safe on the Annapurna circuit trek with Tilicho lake!

When choosing a trekking company for your Annapurna circuit trek with Tilicho lake, make sure they are registered. With this, the company is maintained with strict safety standards and provides insurance coverage in case of accidents. Most companies also offer emergency assistance so that if anything happens along the way, they can help get you back to civilization quickly.

Before leaving home, make sure you have the right gear. Bring rain gear, warm clothes, hiking boots and water bottles and even some food! Tilicho Lake Trek Itineray: Annapurna Circuit Side Trek

Trekking in Nepal / July 2, 2021 by fulltimeexplorer / 19 Comments

The Tilicho Lake is a glacial lake located near the very popular Annapurna Circuit at an altitude of 4919m (16,138 ft). The Tilicho Lake trek takes three to four days depending on your itinerary and weather conditions. The lake is famous for being the “biggest highest lake” in the world. Although there are smaller higher lakes, this one is notable for its size. It has a depth of 85m and is the site of one of the highest ever altitude scuba dives. The lake is meant to be the main attraction of this side trek, but I personally found the variety of landscapes on route to Tilicho Lake to be the best part. The landslide areas on the way there make you feel like you’re on the moon, while the views 35 minutes before the lake are some of the best mountain views I’ve ever seen.

Tilicho Lake Trek Itinerary Map

Please note: the locations on this map are estimates since I couldn’t find their exact location on any online maps. This map should not be used for navigational purposes. It is just meant as a visual aid .

Day 1 – Braka to Shri Kharka

Starting Altitude: 3,439m (11,279 ft)

Ending Altitude: 4,050m (13,284 ft)

Walking Time: 4 hours

Tea House: Himalayan Guest House

Oxygen Concentration (at sleeping location): 62%

While most people stay in Manang, we chose to stay in Braka for an acclimation day since the nearby side treks felt like a better option. We had been choosing smaller towns over bigger ones and knew we’d have time to stop in Manang on the way back. That being said, I think it’s better to spend one night in Braka and one in Manang after your acclimation hike. The two villages are only 40 minutes apart, but it will make the trek to Tilicho Lake a bit easier. Also, Manang has a movie theater and coffee shops, making it a great place to spend a little time. I highly recommend seeing the movie Caravan while you’re there which is a favorite among Nepalis.

The road from Braka to Manang is easy and straight forward to follow. Stay on the main road until you hit the village. Jeeps can’t go beyond this point, which is a breath of fresh air, literally. Pass through the main gate and follow the path into town. This is a great place to stop and grab any last minute supplies. I got a pair of shoe laces since mine were wearing thin. You’ll pass through an ACAP checkpoint for your permits. Once you’ve checked in, keep on the main path and follow the signs to “Thorong La” until you get out of the main village.

Once you leave Manang, you’ll see a small sign on the left directing you to Tilicho Lake. Ahead, the trail splits, and we chose the path on the left which wrapped around the mountain and offered incredible views of the Annapurna Range. The road starts to descend to the river, but don’t go all the way down. There’s a path on the right halfway down that’s easy to miss. You’ll know you’ve got the right one if you cross the suspension bridge. The trail is narrower, but it stays pretty flat compared to the road which has lots of hills.

The path will reconnect with the road and take you to Khangsar (3,734 meters or 12,247 feet). It took us two and a half hours to reach here from Braka. If you are coming from Manang, it will take less than two hours. At the end of the village, we stopped for a cup of tea at Hotel on Heights Restaurant because it had a balcony with a nice view of the mountains.

Follow the main path out of the village, and you’ll end up back on the trail. It starts out pretty gradual, but as you get closer to Shri Kharka, the elevation begins to increase and the trail gets steeper. At the top, we chose to stay in the Himalayan Guest House. They have excellent food (the cheese dal baht is great) and a hot gas shower. We were the first people there, so we got the room on the end with an ensuite toilet and views in all three directions. They’ll also store your bag while you take a daypack to the lake. This makes a huge difference when going over the landslides and was the best advice I got .

We decide to spend the night in Shri Kharka because we arrived around 12pm when the wind starts to pick up. On the next leg of the trek, there is an area known for landslides and rock fall. These are more likely to happen in the afternoon when the rocks have heated up and when it is windy. It’s safer to cross this section in the morning when the wind is low, so we decided to wait for the next day.

Day 2 – Shir Kharka to Tilicho Base Camp

Starting Altitude: 4,050m (13,284 ft)

Ending Altitude: 4,150m (13,612 ft)

Walking Time: 2 hours

Tea House: Hotel New Tilicho Base Camp

Oxygen Concentration (at sleeping location): 61%

The path from Shri Kharka to Tilicho Base Camp is easy to navigate since it’s the only path in sight. We followed it for a while before running into a large group of Nepali tourists who were on their way back from the lake. Each one greeted us ominously with a, “Namaste” and “Safe travels.” No one had wished us safe travels for 13 days so it seemed strange to hear it from everyone all of a sudden. We had been told how dangerous this section would be multiple times, so I already expected the worst.

Once we arrived to the notorious landslide area, I was pleasantly surprised that the path was much wider than I had anticipated. Because we broke this section of the trek up into two days instead of one, we arrived early in the morning with no wind and no rocks tumbling down at us. My last trek had a similar appearance, although the path was covered in ice instead of rubble which was much scarier. This might have skewed my opinion on the danger level, but after consulting others, they too thought it wasn’t as bad as others made it out to be.

The path narrowed in sections ranging from 5 feet to 20 feet long. These areas weren’t exactly easy, but as long as I went slow and took my time making sure my footing was right, it seemed to be ok. That being said, if you stopped and looked down, or stopped to think of all the things that could go wrong it would be absolutely terrifying. I stared at the path and my feet and just focused on that as opposed to what would happen if I slipped, a rock hit me, or a sudden earthquake occurred. When you get in a car, you don’t think of all the ways you could die, so don’t psych yourself out here.

My best advice is not to let people scare you away from doing this trek. Is it scary? Yes. Should that deter you? No. The landslide section only took 2 hours to cross and most of it was safe. We actually saw guys riding mountain bikes down it and a caravan of mules carrying propane tanks. If they can do it, you can do it. Just make sure not to go during bad weather or windy conditions, and take your time.

At Tilicho Base Camp, we decide to stay in the Hotel New Tilicho Base Camp. The hot showers are good and the rooms are really clean. We even had an ensuite toilet. The views from the hotel are amazing. It’s the best part of the Annapurna Circuit up to this point.

Day 3 –Tilicho Base Camp to Tilicho Lake to Shri Kharka

Starting Altitude: 4,150m (13,612 ft)

Tilicho Lake Altitude: 5,023m (16,475 feet)

Walking Time: 8 hours

Oxygen Concentration (at highest point): 55%

We decided to leave the hotel at 4:00am, so we ordered breakfast the night before and packed it into Zip Lock baggies. I ordered two boiled eggs and Tibetan bread. We heard from other trekkers that waking up at 2:00am ensured you’d see the stars including the whole Milky Way and the sunrise at Tilicho Lake. It was very cloudy the night before, and none of us felt committed enough to wake up that early. By 4:00am you couldn’t see the stars, but it was also somewhat cloudy when we went.

We walked toward the other two hotels in town and followed the path that goes in between them. The Himalayas were pure white in the distance, the snow bright as day against the stark sky. The path goes slightly uphill at the start. Although the incline is gradual, you’re trekking above 4000m (13,120 ft) so it’s difficult to breathe.

The hike up to Tilicho Lake has some landslide areas as well. They aren’t as bad as the ones from the day before, but they are difficult to navigate at night. Some of the gravel is dark and some is light, making it hard to differentiate the cliff from the different colors of dust. I walked extra slow to be safe. After a while, I stopped to take a breathing break and realize the sun was rising behind us. Everyone told us the sunrise wasn’t special, but the overcast sky worked in our favor. The clouds turned to embers, and I couldn’t help but stop and stare for over five minutes.

At the end of the landslide section, right before a steep hill covered in switchbacks, there’s a gradual incline that was extremely exhausting to me. I tried not to stop because stopping to rest on a landslide seemed like a bad idea, but it was too tough. In those 20 feet, I must have stopped at least three times to catch my breath. Even though the next part with the switchbacks looked so much worse, it was actually easier. At the top, a sign reads “Tilicho Lake 35 minutes.”

From here, the ground evens out with barely any incline. We passed a few small ponds which are calm in the morning and reflect the beautiful mountains nearby. The view from this section is easily in the top three views of my life. The mountains are gorgeous, reflecting the soft morning sunlight. I took a few minutes just to stop and appreciate them before moving on.

With one last tiny hill, we made it to the lake which we already knew would be frozen. It snowed the night before, so it was also covered in a fresh sheet of snow. Unfortunately, it looked a bit more like a giant field than anything else. One girl joked that she’d only give it a “solid five” out of ten. We had previously joked that the lake was the “biggest highest lake.”  Wording that is a little tricky because it’s not actually the “highest lake” in the world. I personally didn’t think the lake was anything to write home about, but the sunrise and views along the way were worth every second of the walk.

After spending an hour at the top, the sky began to warm up and we started our slow decent back to Base Camp. It took us about 3 hours to reach the top. On the way down, we stopped for photos, water breaks, and breaks for no reason. It took us two hours to descend at our leisurely pace, but we really got to enjoy the incredible views on the way.

We all grabbed a real breakfast at the hotel. I highly recommend the set breakfast which includes everything and is very filling. We all looked like zombies, but picked ourselves up and began the trek back over the landslides to Shri Kharka. We began to walk at 11:00am as opposed to the day before when we began at 8:00am. You could already feel the difference in the wind, and I realized why people were so afraid of the landslide zone. Although no rocks were falling, the wind made balancing on the narrow parts a little trickier.

Again, we took a leisurely pace and stopped for long breaks between the dangerous spots to regroup. At one point, I heard beautiful bells and thought someone had hung wind chimes. Note, if you hear bells, it means an animal is coming. As I turned along the cliff, a pack of mules came running down a blind spot. Luckily, the owner saw us and yelled for the horses to stop. They obeyed immediately before running us over the side of the mountain. He then proceeded to pull us up over the landslide and out of the path of the horses. It definitely gave us an adrenaline rush.

It took us about 3 hours to get back to Shri Kharka, but we stopped for a lot of photos, and to just sit and chat after the landslide zone. It could easily be done in 2 hours if you are focused on getting there quickly. The entire hike for the day added up to approximately 8 hours of walking. We spent another night at the Himalayan Guest House where we’d left our larger bags the day before.

Day 4 – Shri Kharka to Manang

Ending Altitude: 3,540m (11,611 ft)

Walking Time: 2.5 hours

Tea House: Hotel Royal Manang

Oxygen Concentration (at sleeping location): 66%

Depending on your trek itinerary, you can either go back to Manang or forward to Yak Kharka. We chose to return to Manang because I needed WiFi for work. This is the route you would take if you are headed back down instead of continuing onto the pass. For those who plan to go over the pass, you should follow the signs from Shri Kharka to Yak Kharka. I’ve been told it takes 4-5 hours to reach Yak Kharka and an extra hour to reach Ledar.

The path to Manang starts with a steep descent which hurt my knees. After that, it’s an easy walk along the road most of the way. During one section, there is a path to the left which is a shortcut that bypasses the road. It’s the same path you took on the way there. Since we didn’t stay in Manang on the way up, we took full advantage of the cinema, restaurants, and WiFi while in town. Oh yeah, and stocked up on some well-deserved yak cheese.

Are you headed to Tilicho Lake? Would you cross these landslides to see it?

Hey there, very interestinf post! I‘m booked a guided tour for the annapurna cuircit in the beginning of september. I‘ve been reading stories about the danger of rock and mudslides. Should I be afraid of these things? You wrote that it wouldn‘t be that dangerous and it took you only 2h to pass the rockslide area. I‘m afraid because during september there should still be heavy rains… what would you say about the danger?

July 24, 2019 at 8:31 pm

Hey Lucas! I think having a guide will be a huge help for you, so it’s good you booked one. The best thing you can do is check the conditions right before taking the turnoff to the lake. Locals in the area have the best info. When we went, we were advised to go early in the morning because winds picked up in the afternoon, and it was safer without the wind. Most of the circuit is very safe but Tilicho is dangerous. It would be hard to plan ahead. When you get there you’ll want to check the last three days weather to see if it rained a lot and then check the forecast for the next three days. September can be hit or miss. I’ve done treks in monsoon with no rain and I’ve done treks in peak season and got hit with crazy weather. Just go with the flow and your guide will know if it’s safe to try or not ☺️

How long is the total trek duration?

April 7, 2019 at 2:54 pm

It matters where you start and finish the trek. We walked almost the entire thing (most people take a Jeep half way) so it took us 21 days. This is the longer itinerary we did however you can easily cut out half if you’re on a time crunch http://fulltimeexplorer.com/annapurna-circuit-itinerary/

Detailed Itinerary

The day begins with the drive along the Prithivi highway from Kathmandu to Besisahar – Bhulbule or a bit further to Ngadi depending on the road conditions. Enroute we will enjoy the Trishuli River, stunning traditional villages, terraced fields and if the weather is good, we will have some fantastic picturesque views to the Himalayan Range. We divert off the highway at bustling town of Dumre and continue north to Besisahar. After lunch, we complete the drive through dirt road to Bhulbule in the Marshyangdi Valley. After arriving in overnight stop, we will check in to our local teahouse and then head out to explore if time permits and then relax over dinner.

After early breakfast we hit the trail. After crossing a suspension bridge at Bhulbhule, the trail passes a cascading waterfall, and as we traverse the rice terraces, the views of Mount Manaslu, Himalchuli and Ngadi Chuli are magnificent. Following a gentle incline we come to the village of Ngadi with its picturesque shops. From here we climb, steep and hot, to Bahundanda. Bahundanda literally means “hill of the Brahmins” and it is the most northerly Brahmin settlement in the Marsyangdi Valley, situated high up on a ridge. From Bahundanda our trail abruptly dips to Syange (1080m).

Ahead, the Marsyangdi valley forms a steep V-shape, and we follow the winding mountain path down through Syange and along the river for some distance. The trail then climbs steeply and the path is cut into the sheer cliff-face some 200-300 m above the riverbed. Eventually we descend to the atmospheric village of Jagat, situated on a shelf, which juts into the precipitous Marsyangdi valley. Then steeply up through a forest to a wonderful teahouse just before Chamje and marked by a magnificent waterfall on the opposite bank. Chamje is an atmospheric village of traditional-style teahouses, often packed with saddled local horses. After descending to the river and crossing a suspension bridge, we continue on an

undulating path above the river, climb the switch-backing path to the top of the hill, and are treated to the sight of Tal below us on a wide plain by the river. Tal is the district border between Lamjung and Manang.

we have just traveled. Beyond Tal and the check-post, the valley narrows and the path become high and winding, and in several areas is actually hewn from the rock. Beyond the small village of Karte, there is a bit more exposed trail walking before the path drops again to the river. We cross a suspension bridge, and climb the short distance to the stone Mani marking the entrance to Dharapani. Travelling due west, Bagarchhap is an hour away from Dharapani offering exotic views of the Annapurna II and Lamjung Himal. Then we will reach the village of Danagyu after half an hour.

Continuing to climb through forests of pine and oak, we turn left and head up the high trail to Koto. After an hour of lovely, open forests, we reach a clearing at the top of the trail and a charming Tibetan teahouse where we will stop for a break. Pausing for breath, we can look back for views of Manaslu. An hour away is the wonderful Gurung village of Timang, where the villagers might be harvesting their crops of buckwheat or stuffing local sausages. Heading back down to the village of Koto Qupar, our base for the trek up to Nar Phu, we can look straight up at nearby Annapurna II – a stunning sight convincing us that we are deep in the Himalayan Mountains! Many of the villagers are the from Nar Phu valley; this is the gateway to their region. Less than an hour brings us to Chame, the local administrative center of Manang, and a large village packed with small shops and teahouses, an army post and a large school. We bed down here for the evening.

The trail now continues along the river backs through to Bharatang, which is surrounded by apple orchards. It’s a beautiful walk from Chame to Pisang, through woods with some small ascents, and wonderful views of the peaks soaring above us. It’s just a five hour day, so we’ll have the afternoon in Pisang to explore the village, with it’s Tibetan Mani stones and Gompa, perhaps taking a walk up to Upper Pisang for amazing views of Annapurna II and Annapurna III.

Trek the northern trail via upper Pisang and Ghyaru – an area renowned for its spectacular views. 6 hours walk past a series of unique and colorful Chortens to Manang, at 3500m, a village of 500 or so flat-roofed houses, the headquarters for the region, and an interesting village packed with trekkers, bakeries and lodges. Manang is dominated by high peaks – Annapurna III and Gangapurna tower over it, and a dramatic icefall sits just across the river. There is an old Gompa on the edge of town, many local teahouses, and some atmospheric, winding streets in the village leading out toward the Thorung La. Finally, guest houses, showers, cold beers! There is a 3 o’clock lecture on altitude by the Himalayan Rescue Association for anyone interested.

Today is our acclimatization day, with lots of options; a long day-hike to the Ice Lake, a visit to the ‘Hundred Rupee Lama’ at the cave gompa above Manang, a two-hour hike to Milarepa’s cave across the river from Braga, the HRA talk, or a tour of Manang’s many bakeries. A hike up 300 meters or so for acclimatization is recommended, but nothing too strenuous is required. The guesthouse is wonderful, a sunny and warm place to gaze at the peaks in the afternoon.

It’s not a long day today, but we gain some altitude, so should take it slowly. En route, we will undoubtedly be passed along the trail by galloping Manangi horses, saddled with wonderful (and expensive) Tibetan wool saddle blankets, and their jubilant Manangi riders, bells jingling as they gallop by. We climb past Tengi and Gunsang to Yak Kharka.

An easy two or three hour walk up to the Thorung La Base Camp Hotel at Thorung Phedi, and after an early lunch, another hour or so to hike up to the lodge at High Camp, where we will stay the night, getting to bed early for our early morning start the next day; pass day! If anyone is having problems with altitude, we have the option of staying at Thorung Phedi Base Camp, where we had lunch, a nice spot to spend the afternoon with its glass windows.

Up early for the three or four hour walk to the top of the Thorung La at 5.400 m, where we are treated with spectacular views over Mustang and the surrounding peaks. The descent is almost as demanding as the ascent to the top of the pass, so a cup of chai and a snack at the local teahouse at Chabarbu, at the bottom of the descent, is a required stop. Then we will enter to lower Mustang, which we have actually reached just after the pass, and the serene temple complex of Muktinath. Muktinath is one of the most significant pilgrim places on earth for the Hindus and the Buddhist. Its unique combination of cold-water springs, natural gas fires and sea fossils that are millions of years old is considered sacred.

Our last day on the trail! It is with a touch of sadness that we will saddle up and get going, knowing that we won’t be doing this tomorrow (although we DO have lakeside cafes and massages to look forward to in Pokhara!). We bid farewell to Muktinath and have a nice morning’s walk down the Kali Gandaki riverbed, looking for saligram along the way to Jomsom, the administrative center for the region. The Kali Gandaki valley gets incredibly windy in the early afternoon, so important to arrive before noon. We’ll have lunch in Jomsom and there is a bank if anyone needs to change money for a refreshing body massage along with hot shower

Sadly, it’s time to leave the magical mountains and bidding farewell to Jomsom, we head back to the greenery of the middle hills. This morning we need to be up and ready for the planes – they come early to make the best of the (usually) calmer weather in the early morning. We are by now familiar with the winds that race down the Kali Gandaki riverbed by midday and we sure don’t want to be in a plane then! We enjoy this incredibly spectacular half hour flight to Pokhara and after checking into our hotel we have the rest of the day to just relax after our trek!!! Depending on your energy levels after your long days on the trail, you can do your relaxing in a lakeside café or bar, getting a massage or heading out for shopping or a spot of sightseeing. Lunch and dinner are free to explore the range of food available – dazzling after our time spent on the trail – and we can meet up for meals or take some out to reflect on the amazing experience we’ve just had. If you’d like to go exploring the food options on your own, we will give some good recommendations! (Note: today is a great day to put some laundry in and have time to pick it up before we head to Kathmandu!)

Ask for Krishna as your guide - you'll be so glad you did

This was our first experience trekking for such a long time and in such high altitudes, so we didn't really know what we were facing when we first started, but everyone at the agency was very helpful in telling us how to prepare and really planned the trek according to what we were looking for and our abilities. We met Krishna the day before we left and immediately knew we were lucky to have him as our guide : with his genuine smile and straightforward humor, we knew right away that we'd have a good time and most importantly that he was someone we would feel safe and comfortable with. He is very knowledgeable about his country and the mountains he grew up in, and kept saying that of he didn't know the answer to a question, he'd find out - which proved to be true all the way. He even managed to find local honey for us that an old man was making on his balcony !! He was extremely sweet in all his attentions to make us feel as confortable as possible after a long day's walk and explained us very carefully everything we needed to know about the potential dangers of altitude sickness and so on. We couldn't have hoped for a better experience and this was all thanks to our wonderful guide Krishna. We are already looking forward to going trekking with him again !

Suggestions, a comprehensive 11-day annapurna circuit trek itinerary.

' src=

Annapurna Circuit Trek is a trek, which follows the trail to Thorong La 5416m and the holy land Muktinath. The classic Itinerary of the Annapurna Circuit Trek starts from Besisahar. Nonetheless, nowadays it starts in several places as trekkers want. It is because of the road to Manang. Although, the popularity of this trek is still the same. And each year thousands of tourists will trek there. As a trekking guide, I found, there are huge amounts of differences after the road in this region.

Panoramic vistas of the Mt. Annapurna range, Gangapurna, Lamjung, and other peaks like Pisang Peak, Cholu range. Traditional villages like Chame, Pisang, Nawal, Braga, Manang, and Khangsar. Buddhist monuments such as Mani Walls, Stupas, and Monasteries are the other beauty of the Annapurna Circuit Trek. The villages between the giant peaks and cliffs are very unique and unbelievable. The itinerary of ACT is different as a trekker chose to start hiking.

Annapurna Circuit Trek itinerary can combine with other popular trekking trails. Such as Nar Phu Trek, Tilicho Lake Trek, Upper Mustang Trek, Khopra Danda, Poon Hill, ABC Trek, and Mardi Himal Trek. It all depends on the time of the trekkers. Do you have more time and want to be more time with nature then you can add ACT Trek with any other treks.

Day 1 Drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar and Jagat (1300m)

Annapurna Circuit Trek Itinerary

I and our porter went to Hotel at 7:30 am because we planned to drive to Besisahar at 8 o clock. When we reached in Hotel our guest was ready and we waited for the car to get there. After 15 minutes of waiting, the car arrived there and we packed our luggage and get in the car. Our Annapurna Circuit Trek commenced and today was our first-day journey to Pokhara.

In the beginning, we chatted with each other and after some time we were all in the stage of sleep. Suddenly the car stopped and that was the place for breakfast at Naubesi Dhading. We didn’t eat breakfast there because we ate breakfast in Hotel but we drank a cup of coffee. After some time our road trip continues to Besisahar and we planned to eat lunch at the Besisahar.

As per our itinerary for this trek, we reached Beisahar and ate some delicious food. While waiting for the food we packed our luggage in the Jeep and ready to go after the meal. Because we have to take a jeep from Besisahar to Jagat. After eating there we got into the Jeep and our real Mountain drive started. The road was bumping and jumping.

While we were driving to Jagat we stopped around an hour midway because one jeep was unable to start. The wait was finally over when one of the drivers used his ideas and start the jeep. Ultimately, we reached Jagat and stayed overnight in the North face Hotel.

Day 2 Jagat to Taal (1700

manang trek itinerary

Today was our first walking day of the Annapurna Circuit Trek Itinerary and we plan to walk at 7:30 am. We ate breakfast at 7: am and after breakfast paid our bill and started to walk to Taal village. Today’s walk is a half-day walk so that we walk slowly but continually via Chamje Village. Nearby Chemje village we enjoyed the amazing waterfall view and honey hive view. And then from Chamje, we left the road on the left side and walk on a proper trekking trail.

The normal trekking trail is not used that much nowadays. Because people want to have an easy trail to walk not only that, there are other reasons too.  The first reason is that the octopus waterfall is on the roadside. And can enjoy the amazing view of that when people walk from rood side. Although that waterfall can see from the proper trekking side too. But we chose to walk on that beautiful trekking trail and avoid the road for today.

After around 4 hours we reach the Manang gate nearby the Taal Village. We took some photos there with the gate. But the view of the Taal Village was not that nice. Because Taal village was damaged by a catastrophic flood during the monsoon season. Then we continue our walk through the village and that flood was very cruel and took everything. Hotels, guest houses, restaurants, normal people’s houses, schools, and local shops.

We stayed at the Paradise hotel and in the afternoon time we explore the village. And see the flood’s angriness. Walking on the bank of the river and the beautiful waterfall nearby the guesthouse was nice to see. Ate dinner at 7 pm and plan for the next day before we sleep.

Day 3 Taal to Timang (2750m)

Annapurna Circuit Trek Itinerary

As we planned we had breakfast at 7 o clock morning and before breakfast, we packed our luggage. After breakfast, we paid our bills before we walk and crossed the Marsandi River just nearby the guest house. Because of the flood, the old route and old bridge were damaged completely, and no way to walk there. Then we follow the trail to the road and after around 20 minutes of climbing, we reached the road to Manang.

From the road, there is an easy trail to walk and we have to follow the road all the way to Timang village. Our first stop was at Kotre village where a few guesthouses were still standing. And then our journey continues to Dharapani village. Where we stopped for a cup of tea and registered our trekking permit and TIMS card.

Today was our third day of the Annapurna Circuit Trek schedule. after the tea break and permitted to walk, we continued to walk for lunch camp. We ate lunch at Dhanaqua, it is a small village with few guest houses. From there we have to climb up to Timang Village and it took us around 2 hours. When we reached the weather is not so good, it was quite cold because of the cloudy surroundings.

Day 4 Timang to Chame (2660m)

Annapurna Circuit Trek Itinerary

Day fourth walk during Annapurna Circuit Trek Itinerary from Temang to Chame. It was a short but beautiful day to walk. We know that today we need to walk short so that we started quite late, also there was a bit cold than in other places. We eat breakfast at 8:00 am in the morning and around 9 am we started to walk.

In the beginning, there was no side walking trail so we followed the road. Walking on the road is a bit easier than a proper hiking trail yet the problems are jeeps, bikes, and dust from them. Pip pip horns are another thing that made me crazy while walking on a peaceful mountain.

In the first part around an hour, we walked on the road and took a long break before walking on the proper trail. Traditional trekking trails of the region are going to vanish. Because even the local people are also not walking there. Trekkers are also not coming for the last two years because of the coronavirus. And some trekking guides are also not taking trekkers from the walking trail.

We drank a cup of tea and ate some cookies at Thanchok. And continued our journey to Chame. Again after some, we met for the road and continued to walk to Koto. At Koto we stopped to register our trekking permit at the Police check post.

Along the way, we showed the giant snowy peak LANJUNG Himal and that encouraged us to walk faster. From Koto it took around 45 minutes to reach Chame. And finally, we reached Chame and ordered lunch before we went to our room. Be freshen up, eat lunch and explore the Chame village. Overall, day 4 of the Annapurna Circuit Trek ended beautifully.

Day 5 Chame to Upper Pisang (3300m)

Annapurna Circuit Trek Itinerary

Today is the day 5th of the Annapurna Circuit Trek Itinerary and we walked from Chame to Pisang. When we woke up the weather was so clear and perfect to walk so that the Lamjung Himal was just in front of us. We took some amazing shorts before eating breakfast. Our plan was to begin or start our journey at 8 am in the morning.

After breakfast, we started our trek to Pisang and crossed the Marsandi River. Then followed the road as other trekkers walk. We continued to walk on the road and then walk into the pine forest. And the bank of the Marsandi River before reaching Bratang. Bratang where is the biggest apple farm in Nepal.  We also tested the Apple juice and Apple pie from there and it was so Yammy.

Almost 99% of trekkers stopped there for something to eat. Because you can have the best Coffee in the town and Apple items such as Apple Pie, Crumble Donuts, and many more. Even you can have fresh Apples from their Garden during the summer season. And other seasons Apple will from their store.

After juice and Apple pie we continue our trip again on the road. And then after some time we crossed the bridge and walked on the proper trekking trail. Climbing up for around one hour and again we have to walk on the road to Dikur Pokhari. At Dikur Pokhari we had lunch and after some time we followed the trail to Upper Pisang.

From Dikur Pokhori it took around one and a half hours to reach Upper Pisang. After checking into Hotel we visited the Monastery and there was a ceremony going on. We saw the Puja for some time and then back to Hotel. We had a great day fifth of the Annapurna Circuit Trek Series.

Day 6 Pisang to Manang (3540m)

Annapurna Circuit Trek Itinerary

As our plan was to go via the upper trail to Manang from Upper Pisang, so we followed on the way to Ghyaru. We ate breakfast at 7:30 and started to walk around 8:15. The first part was on the shadow and a bit cold so we didn’t stop anywhere. Just walking and walking but we were enjoying the walk and views of the surroundings.

After crossing the suspension bridge; we stopped because we need to take off our warm clothes. We took off warm clothes and then climb up to Ghyaru in the ZICZAJ way. There was a new trail to walk and some part of the trail was so steep to walk that we took a couple of breaks to reach Ghayru.

We enjoyed the spectacular vistas of the snowy mountain peaks from Ghayru. And dramatic landscapes of the surrounding and the Marsyandi Valley. We took some amazing photos from the viewpoint and after that drank a cup of coffee in a nearby restaurant.

From Ghayru we followed the trail to Nawal and enjoyed the amazing views of the Annapurna range. And after a couple of breaks, we reached Nawal Village. Nawal is a traditional Himalayan settlement and also it is the Nar Phu Trek ending point. We had lunch in the Himalayan hotel. After lunch, we explored the Nawal village before continuing the trek to Manang.

From Nawal, we decent and followed the road and continued on the road to Manang. During the walk, we crossed villages such as Mundi and Braga. Today was a long but beautiful day for the Annapurna Circuit Trek Itinerary. And we have the rest day the next day.

Day 7 Manang Rest Day / Acclaimatize Day

Annapurna Circuit Trek Itinerary

After 6 days of walking one rest day is the nicest day while doing Annapurna Circuit Trek . Even on the rest day, we planned to hike up to the Parken Gumba and Parken Viewpoint. As per our plan, we started to hike up at 8 am in the morning from Manang. The hike was fascinating because we were enjoying the view of the entire Manang village. And the panoramic view of the Annapurna Massif and other peaks.

While climbing up to Parken Gumba we passed some attractive Buddhist Stupas. The walking trail to the Monastery was well-managed. Still, in some parts, it was difficult to walk because there are not many trekkers walking. Due to the coronavirus pandemic. After around an hour of climb, we reached Parken viewpoint. From this viewpoint, we enjoyed the best mountain view of the whole ACT Trek.

After enjoying the picturesque mountain view our journey continued to the Parken Gumba. Ultimately, we reached the Monastery. Where living an old lady Lama. She blessed us with a successful trip and offer us a cup of tea and cookies. We spent around an hour there talking with the Lama and then walked down to Manang.

After backing down from the monastery we cleaned ourselves.  Also, we washed our clothes for the last 6 days and explored Manang village. Normally, during the rest day in Manang people walk to Gangapurna Lake and the viewpoint. And some people hike to Ice Lake or Milarepa Cave too. There are many day hiking trails from Manang while during Annapurna Circuit Trek

Day 7 Manang to Yak Kharka (4050m)

manang trek itinerary

Till Manang is the road so that jeep and bikes are running there and the horns and dust come from them are very awful. Luckily there is no road from Manang to Yak Kharka. So that the walk going to be a pleasure and pleasant. However, still, the first part of the walk was on the road but we started to walk in the morning time. Therefore we didn’t find any jeeps or bikes.

Our first resting place was at the Tanki Manang and from there we show people going to Tilicho Lake. Tilicho Lake is popular as the world’s highest Lake and people go there by doing Tilicho Lake Trek. This time many trekkers take down their itinerary to go to Tilicho Lake. Because the lake was frozen and not nice to see and people don’t want to just climb there.

After a long break at Tanki Manang, we continued our Annapurna Circuit Trek Series to Yak Kharka. Walking up to Yak Kharka from Manang the first hours are always tough because need to ascend and ascend. After some time we reached Gunsala and took a tea break. And there were other trekkers too taking breaks and drinking a cup of tea.

From Gunsala the walking trail become Nepali flat. By turning back we enjoyed the majestic view of the Annapurna two and three. And also we showed the gazing blue sheep while walking to Yak Kharka. We reached Yak Kharka for lunch and as per our Annapurna Circuit Trek schedule, we stayed there.

Day 8 Yak Kharka to High Camp (4850m)

Annapurna Circuit Trek Itinerary

Today was a quite heavy day for our Annapurna Circuit Trek Itinerary before passing Thorong La 5416m. As per our plan, we started to walk around 8 o’clock in the morning from Yak Kharka. The walking trail was gradually up and we continue to walk on that just in the beginning there was an icy trail. And there was a bit difficult to walk for everyone. And we have an experienced team so we easily passed that difficult part.

Then our journey continued to Lether and after some time we reached Lether. We took a short break there and again continued our walk to our destination. Along the way, we show the herd of blue sheep gazing at their own and that was nice to see. The weather was clear and we enjoyed our walk to the high camp. While we walking we met many Nepalese and foreign trekkers going to Phedi and High Camp.

After crossing the suspension bridge we reached the sunny part and we took a long tea break at the tea shop. That tea shop’s owner was viral on Youtube for chasing British women. And after the tea break again continued to walk to the Phedi and we were extra careful to walk in the landslide area. In Phedi, we ate lunch and took a long lunch break before climbing to High Camp.

From Phedi, we climbed up to High camp and which took us around one and half hours. And checked in at the High Camp hotel and we drank a cup of tea and coffee. After tea, we climbed the viewpoint and which took around one hour. And when we back to the hotel there was full of people and we have to share a room with other trekkers. We ate dinner quilt earlier than usual because we have to wake up and walk early in the morning.

Day 9 High Camp to Muktinath (3700m) via Throng La Pass (5416m).

Annapurna Circuit Trek Itinerary

In the high camp hotel, there were more than 50 people who were planning to pass the Thorong La 5416m. Most of the people plan to have breakfast between 4 to 4:30 am and our time was at 5 am. I woke up earlier than our plan because other guides woke up on their schedule. Who was sleeping together in a room? I checked my guests and they were also waking up and packing their luggage, and I helped them to pack their luggage. Then we ate breakfast at 4:45 AM and started to hike at 5:10 am to Thorong La.

Early in the morning walking with a flashlight. Walking in very cold weather was very tough but we continue slowly. We found people were having a hard time walking up because of the high altitude and cold. Along the way, we didn’t take any long breaks just continue to walk toward our destination. And finally, at 8:30 am we reached Thorong La Pass 5416m. We spent around 15 minutes on the top and then continue to walk down to Muktinath. Walking down was a bit tough because of the snow and steep down.

We had vegetable noodle soup at the Phedi. And took quite a long time before embarking journey to Muktinath. We reached Muktinath after one and a half hours from Phedi. Muktinath is a holy land and getting more modernized as well. Because there are many hotels, guest houses, banks, and ATMs. In the Mustang region, there are banks and ATMs only in Jomsom and Muktinath. Yet, there are some private bank branches in Tsarang and Lomanthang too.

Overall today we walked around 10 hours to get to Muktinath. And today was one of the hardest and most beautiful days of the Annapurna Circuit Trek Itinerary.

Day 10 Muktinath to Jomsom (2720m)

manang trek itinerary

Firstly, we woke up and visited the Muktinath temple, and back to the hotel for breakfast. After breakfast, we descend to Jharkot, when we reach Jharkot we got an opportunity to observe a ceremony in the monastery. That ceremony was about the purify the villages and the whole region of the Mustang. So there were a lot of people attending the ceremony. Slowly we continue to walk down to Kinja village and we had a cup of coffee and eat some biscuits.

Till Kinja there is a walking trail so we followed the walking trail. From Kinja we have to walk on the blacktop road. So we followed the road to Kagbeni. From above the Kagbeni, we took the trekking trail to Yekle Bhati. Yekle Bhati is the place where we have to eat lunch. So we stopped there for lunch and it took around an hour. After lunch, our journey to Jomsom continues on the dusty road with heavy wind. It took us two and a half hours to reach Jomsom. Today is our last day’s itinerary of the ACT Trek. Hence, we celebrated our last day in Jomsom.

Day 11 Jomsom to Pokhara flight

manang trek itinerary

Early in the morning, we walked to Jomsom airport for the check-in because our flight was at 6:30 am. Usually, for the domestic flight, we have to be one hour earlier that is what we did. After getting to the airport we followed all the procedures and went to the waiting room. However, the airplane finally arrived there at 6:45 AM and we got on the plane at 7 o’clock the morning. The flight to Pokhara was just 30 minutes from Jomsom.

After reaching Pokhara we drove to the Hotel. And then I said goodbye to the members because they have planned to spend a few days in Pokhara. After reaching Pokhara we drove to the Hotel. And then I said goodbye to the members because they have planned to spend a few days in Pokhara.

This Annapurna Circuit Trek Itinerary is based on how I did this trek recently. As I already mentioned, this trek can do in different ways and lengths. Although, the main theme of doing this trek is to enjoy the nature and culture of the Himalayan region of Nepal. And understand what is real trekking in Nepal. As a trekking Guide, I always love to be in the Himalayas of Nepal.

Manang – Nar Phu (Phoo) Valley & Kangla Pass | Nepal

Manang , the land beyond mountains. It is one of the favourite trekking destinations in Nepal for both domestic and international travellers. It is also renowned as the land beyond mountains after its neighbouring district  Mustang, Nepal. The majestic wide verdant fields, valley, waterfalls, beautiful crests, people, culture and etiquette is more than enough to dazzle anyone trekking in Nepal.

Whenever one ponders about Manang, waterfalls, apple farms, outspread colourful fields with a parched hill that took over centuries to form comes to one mind. It is definitely a hidden gem behind the mountains. The trek starts from Besisahar (760 mt), Lamjung which is a subtropical zone (below 1,200 mt) then ascend gradually to the Arctic region (Above 4,400 mt). The initial part of the journey consists of several colossal and puny streams which will leave you awestruck. Imagine, witnessing cascade every after each turn, isn’t this majestic. And most roadside villages located just beneath the vast mountains. The trail follows the rapid of Marshyandi river. It isn’t over yet, all these fascinating places and terrains lead to the Phu (Phoo 4,080 mt), Magical Manang.

Yak grazing at the pastures of Nar Village

Phu valley trekking as its sounds is more exquisite when seen. Intersected by two small rivulets, the valley is situated like a plateau. This region is inside the ‘Annapurna Conservation Area’ so one can expect to see wildlife too. It is famous and explored by all voyager although this trek inside Manang is still in mint condition. By witnessing the valley, it feels like time has stopped. The pre-historic, houses, Chorten, stone-paved pavements and structure date back centuries and its secluded characteristic are what attracts every traveller to this region. In order to reach this secluded place, one has to take another trail from the existing path of Koto. There is no denying that everything comes with a cost and some nerve-wracking uphills cannot be neglected. But, the mightiest view comes after the hardest climb.

Ama samuha at Koto heading towards vehicle stop.

The place is dominated by Tibetan Culture whereas Ghale, Gurung and lama have the majority. You can observe the shift of development as most of the river crossing contains both modern and ancient wooden bridge along the way. Getting involved with a lama in the hymn is one of the admirable experience and more to this some Gumba such as ‘Satye Gumba’ also provide health facilities because of the place remoteness. Isn’t this delightful?

Another place we visited was Nar. Compared to Phoo, it was more populated and the area was also larger however the liveliness of the place and zeal of the village was on the same par. Widespread pasture land, livestock, farming, verdant fields and mountains come as a feast that filled our tummy for a lifetime. Various puja, festival, games, and rituals are common in this part for that a rambling soul can get close to religion along with nature.

Manang 2

The extended easy-peasy trail after Nar to Annapurna Conservation Area Shelter (ACAS) leads to Kang La pass which is elevated at an elevation of 5,320 mt. A short and demanding uphill and the sight is yours. One finds his true self after conquering the Pass and the landscape is grand. Whenever you travel, the first thing to travel is to challenge yourself while getting close to nature but this journey of ours has brought us even closer to the culture. Starting from the Besisahar and traversing through many majestic places, friendly people of the region we suggest this trek in Manang if you are about to embark on a journey in Nepal .
