What are the benefits of business travel (and downsides)_

What are the benefits of business travel (and downsides)?

Congratulations. You just took a job that includes 25% travel (or maybe 50% or even more) . But you’ve never really traveled before and frankly you are a little unsure if this is a good career move or not. In this post I cover benefits of business travel as well as some of the downsides.

Before we get too far let’s define business travel. Here’s how we define it :

Business Travel is when employees travel (fly, drive, train, etc) for some company related activity. Often this involves meeting w/ a customer, visiting a project site, installing something, training, or meeting w/ staff in other locations.

Wikipedia has a more straightforward definition that we like to:

Wikipedia defines business travel as: “ Business travel  is  travel  undertaken for work or  business  purposes, as opposed to other types of  travel , such as for leisure purposes or regularly commuting between one’s home and workplace.” I think this is a fair definition of business travel.

There are no shortage of jobs where frequent travel is a key element . But, when considering a job that has frequent travel it’s important to look at the pros and cons. What are the benefits of business travel? To you? To the company? What are the downsides? In the remaining sections we examine these very questions.

Business Travel - What are the upsides

The Benefits of of Business Travel

Let’s start first with some of the benefits of business travel…and there are many:

  • You will raise your profile inside your firm . Being willing to travel lets management know that  you are an all-in kind of employee, willing to go the extra mile. It will start to let them view you as more than just a “doer.”
  • You will be exposed to higher profile projects . By traveling you will likely get to visit and be involved in higher profile projects. For example, I got my big break by traveling unexpectedly to a customer’s site where an install was going wrong. I was with the CEO, the head of Sales, and the big dog’s from the customer. Great exposure. Especially when I delivered.
  • You will learn to be flexible . Traveling involves a healthy dose of “crud, that happened.” You got to roll w/ the punches and travel will help keep you flexible which is always a good thing for the business world.
  • You will meet new people inside your firm . I like this the most. Lots of good network opps on the road and the chance to build your virtual Rolodex.
  • You will get 1:1 time with important people in your company . I spent 4 hours in a car w/ our national sales director – excellent bonding time. We now trust each other and I have an internal coach when I needed one. When you are on the road you often will be there 1:1 with key members of the firm. I once picked up and dropped off the CEO from the airport. Later he hired for me a very senior role.
  • You will rack up points and miles that you can use to book personal trips . If you gonna travel you might as well get the points. Use those points to pay for your personal or family vacations.
  • You can brag to your friends (via Instagram, of course) about your “glamorous travel life .” Hey, it’s not that glamorous, but what do they know. Give ’em the ole duck face photo at the Hampton Inn in Bismarck, ND and throw a sweet filter on it. They will think you are living the good life. #Sarcasm. Or if you are actually at some place sweet those photos will be awesome. #Millenial (not me!)
  • You get to see a lot of interesting places (bucket list!) . Through business travel I’ve been able to visit almost all 50 states, and check off quite a few bucket list destinations. Sometimes you gotta rush through them given the business constraint, but its still far more economical than you could do on your own.
  • You will gain a more global (or at least “National”) view of the world / country . If you live on the left coast (like I do), you might have a tendency to get a skewed view of the universe. I’ve spent so much time in all parts of this country that I know that there are equal parts good and bad people everywhere. Travel will bring you into contact with all kinds of folks.

The Downsides of Business Travel

Yes…it’s not all glitz and glam and unicorns. In fact, often it’s not. Here are some of the downsides of business travel:

  • Time away from family . This is the biggest drawback. And one I’ve struggled with. I love my family and I love providing for them. I know for a fact that I could not provide the same quality of life that I do today if I didn’t have a job that involved business travel. All the same, it totally sucks being away from your family.
  • The hassles of business travel . Non-business travelers often think the business travel life is glamorous. And I suppose that parts of it are (like getting a sweet upgrade to first class), but the reality is that it’s a job and it has its own daily grind. You are cramped in airline seats, shuttling from one location to the next, tired, etc.
  • You will be tired . Different time zones, jet lag and having to the “up” and “on your game” for you client meetings is taxing on the body. You learn to live with, but it’s still difficult.
  • You will occasionally miss your kids events . This sucks. No two ways about it. I’ve made more events than I’ve missed, but sometimes you will miss a soccer practice or a midweek game. Not fun.
  • You will travel to places people don’t really want to visit (like Minot, ND) – but I see this as an upside, honestly.
  • You will be alone a lot . All of those bucket list places are often done alone. I’ve seen cool lighthouses…by myself. I can honestly say while it was cool to see, I wished my wife was with me. It would have made it so much better. At the end of the day, you are alone in your hotel room with your email and your TV.

Final Thoughts on the Benefits of Business Travel

There are a lot of pros and cons to business travel. I have been doing it for many years and the impact it has had on my career has been significant. The world is pretty flat these days and many corporate jobs require some level of travel.

If you want to really advance in your career it is better to embrace the benefits of business travel. Find a supportive partner (my wife is amazing and we have a great routine! I could not do this job w/out her) and jump in headfirst. Your career will thank you.

One downside I’ve noticed is marital splits.

Thanks so much! And yes heavy travel can be rough on the marriage. No doubt about it.

I like the idea that I’ll be likely to get involved with higher-profile projects with business travel. My boss is offering me this opportunity since he told me that I have the potential to take over his place when he retires, and he wants me to get started as soon as possible with traveling on all parts of the country. If I were to choose, I’ll look for a company that posts business class travel fares so I’ll know how much I should put for the travel expenses when I begin my training.

You should definitely take advantage of it!

The top pros and cons of travelling for business.

When you run a business or you work within a business that operates internationally, chances are you’ll have to travel within your role every now and again. Whether this is to meet with clients, for networking opportunities or another reason, it can prove to be very beneficial to travel.

But there are downsides that come with business travel. Not only can it be a huge expense for the business, but it can have a direct effect on you or your employees. Therefore, it’s important that you weigh up the pros and cons that come with the prospect before taking the leap.

To get you on the right track, here are the top benefits and downsides of business travel:

Let’s start with the pros:

More Networking Opportunities

As aforementioned, networking opportunities are one of the biggest benefits that comes with international travel. Giving you and your employees the chance to attend a variety of trade shows and events, the business has a chance to expand.

Through these trade shows, you can connect with others within your industry as well as prospective clients and grow your brand . From meeting these people face to face, you’ll stand a higher likelihood of a strong connection – rather than trying to connect with them virtually.

To Meet with Prospective Clients

Another prominent benefit that comes with business travel is the chance to meet with your clients physically. Getting to see their premises and meet them in person, you’ll get a better idea of what they need from your business.

You can also use the opportunity to sell what you have to offer – rather than meeting with them via Skype or another virtual method, it shows a level of professionalism that your competitors might not offer.

It’s a Learning Experience

During a business trip, your employees could learn more about their job and come back from travelling with a new admiration for their role. Whether this is because they had the opportunity to meet with clients or others within the industry, or they attended a trade show/training, it’s a huge benefit that you can reap as a n employer. If you are required to travel abroad, it may even give you a chance to learn spanish , or any other language. Indeed if you are going to be travelling abroad a lot as part of your career, you may even become more fluent rather than just learning the basics.

Now, let’s explore the cons that come with business travel:

It Can Be Expensive

Unfortunately, business travel isn’t cheap. Costing the company thousands of pounds each year (or more depending on the number of employees that need to travel for work), it’s something that might not be in the budget for startups or smaller businesses.

Not only will you have to consider the price of the plane ticket, but the hotel room, amenities, food and drink, travelling around the area, etc.

If you’re concerned about spending more than necessary on a vehicle for business travel, it is worth reading this blog post on 6Forget Vw Transporter Kombi Lease: 10 Reasons Why You No Longer Need It , which helps to understand some of the advantages and disadvantages.

You might also find that certain employees require items, such as a work phone that works internationally or a business laptop that they can use when they are travelling.

Considering them to be ‘ What The Business Traveler Really Needs ’, without these seemingly essential items, they won’t be able to do their job as efficiently as possible.

Travelling Can Be Stressful

From missed connections to traffic and other travel-related issues, you or your employees might find that travelling is very stressful. When you or they are feeling the stress, it can result in the trip feeling unproductive.

This demotivational emotion will reflect on the success of the trip and could damage your brand in the long term.

For example, if one of your employees arrives at a crucial business meeting flustered and angry at something that happened whilst they were travelling there, it could put a damper on the meeting.

A High Level of Unproductivity

Following on from the above, it can sometimes feel difficult to manage workload, along with regular meetings whilst travelling. Attempting to stay productive whilst you’re on the go, whether you’re travelling near or far is a struggle felt by everyone.

From trouble with the WiFi to devices running out of battery, it’s undeniable that at times you’ll see a decrease in productivity of those having to travel for business.

It Can Affect Health and Fitness

Another big downside that’s worth mentioning is the effect that frequent business travel has on an employees’ health and fitness.

W hether this is due to the stress caused by travelling, the fact that they/you have to catch late flights, the constant unhealthy food that’s consumed or the lack of exercise that travelling brings, it’s a negative that should not be forgotten.

Missing Friends and Family

With frequent business travel comes the prospect of you or your employees not being able to see friends and family. And while this might not be something that initially bothers you as a business owner, it’s something that will certainly affect your employees.

If you request that certain employees spend large portions of their time travelling for work, it could lead to them resenting the decision. To help prevent this from happening, it’s good to have a happy medium.

If your business must have employees travelling regularly, consider opting for virtual meetings half the time and switching up the employees that are travelling. For your business to be successful, you ultimately need to keep your employees on your side – so think about their needs alongside what the business requires.

Final Thoughts

So, there you go. Those are the top pros and cons that come with having to travel for business, whether it’s a private jet you’re after or economy class. As mentioned, if it’s something that can’t be avoided, consider other ways that you can ease the stress that comes with the process – this will help with any of the downsides associated with the decision.

However, the benefits that come with it are something that shouldn’t be ignored. A key way of growing your business in the long term and getting the word out about what you have to offer, it could be the competitive edge that you were looking for.

At the end of the day, it’s up to your business as to whether travelling for it is right for you. But by using the above, along with other resources, this decision will be made a lot easier.

The joint venture, expected to be established in the second half of this year, will be 51% owned by BP and 49% by ADNOC, the companies said.

It’s a common misperception among inexperienced business travelers: “I can’t collect points or miles earned by business travel because those miles rightfully belong to my employer, who’s paying for my ticket.”

Au contraire.

When an airline awards points or miles for a trip taken, those go to the traveler — the person who occupied the seat — regardless of who bought the ticket. Same for hotel stays.

Experienced business travelers know this already, according to a recent survey by clothier Jos. A. Bank in which 48% of respondents said earning airline miles was one of the big perks of business travel and 53% said the same about earning hotel loyalty points.

» Learn more: Shake up business travel by taking some ‘bleisure’ time

The survey also showed that business travelers spend an average of 14 hours per day working when they travel for their employer. So it makes sense to see how you can maximize the personal benefits of business travel. Here are six tips for making those business trips work harder for you.

1. Sign up for the airline’s frequent flyer program, even if you don’t expect to fly frequently

Joining one of these programs takes five minutes, costs nothing and pays you miles that could have a real cash value you don’t anticipate. For example, you might be able to transfer those miles to a hotel rewards program you like.

2. Use a rewards-earning credit card for everything on your trip

It’s a no-brainer that, if you’re spending money, you might as well get rewarded for it. Make sure the card you use pays you something you want, be it hotel points, airline miles, other loyalty points or cash back.

3. Sign up for a dining program

Many airlines offer a dining program in which you register a credit card — any card, not only the airline card. A lot of frequent flyers don’t bother with these programs because once upon a time they skimmed a list of participating restaurants and didn’t see any they liked.

But if you’re traveling, you could easily find yourself in a miles- or points-earning restaurant without realizing it. If you pay with a credit card you’ve registered with a dining program , you could get a happy surprise in the form of miles that magically appear in your frequent flyer account.

4. Consider loyalty

If your employer lets you make your own travel arrangements, look first at airlines and hotels whose loyalty programs you use . That is, if you’re collecting United MileagePlus miles for a personal trip, consider United for your business travel. Obviously, don’t waste your employer’s money by choosing a more expensive flight, but if fares are the same, there’s no reason not to choose the flight that will earn you the most rewards.

5. Charge meals and drinks to your room

Imagine you’re staying at a Sheraton, you’re a member of Marriott Rewards (remember, Marriott Rewards, Ritz-Carlton Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest were unified under one program in August 2018) and you’re paying with your Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express . That cheeseburger you order at the hotel bar and charge to your room will go on your hotel bill, where it will earn you 6 points per dollar.

Whichever card you use, though, note whether it pays bonus points for travel, dining, or both, then remember that food charged to your room is usually categorized as travel whereas restaurant charges on your card are categorized as dining.

6. If you make your company’s group travel arrangements, look for programs that reward you personally

For example, Marriott’s Rewarding Events program, which is offered through 26 of its brands, seeks to attract conference planners with bonus points paid to the personal account of the person doing the planning. Whichever hotel group you’re considering, check to see what they’re doing to win your business.

What is business travel? Importance and Types

business trip advantage and disadvantage

Business travel has always been an integral part of the corporate world. It provides opportunities to meet clients face-to-face, attend conferences and networking events, and explore new markets.

However, as much as business travel can be exciting, it also comes with its fair share of challenges. From flight delays and cancellations to tracking approvals and keeping spending in check, numerous obstacles can make business travel stressful and overwhelming.

In this blog, we will explore the challenges and solutions of business travel and provide insights on how businesses can optimize their policies and practices to make them more efficient, cost-effective, and enjoyable for everyone involved.

Business Traveler

What is Business Travel?

Millions of professionals worldwide engage in business travel each year. Business travel is when you hit the road or take to the skies for work-related purposes. So, if you've ever traveled across state lines for a meeting or hopped on a plane for a conference, you've been on a business trip.

According to  the Bureau of Transportation Statistics , Americans take over 400 million long-distance business trips yearly, accounting for roughly 16% of all long-distance travel.

What is the Importance of Business Travel?

It's clear that business travel is a significant part of many companies' operations, but what motivates them to send their employees on these journeys? There are several reasons why companies invest in business travel. Here are some of them:

  • Closing Deals

Business deals often involve significant negotiation, and in-person meetings can be critical to reaching an agreement. When people meet in person, they can build trust and establish personal connections that are difficult to achieve through virtual communication. As such, closing deals in person is a common reason for business travel.

  • Exploring New Markets

Companies looking to expand into new markets often send representatives to explore the conditions on the ground and conduct research. Visiting a new market can provide valuable insights into consumer behavior, local regulations, and cultural norms that can help companies tailor their products and services to a new audience.

  • Building Relationships

One of the primary advantages of business travel is its opportunity to build stronger relationships with clients, partners, and colleagues. While email, phone, and video conferencing are convenient, nothing beats face-to-face interactions regarding establishing trust and rapport.

You can pick up on nonverbal cues during in-person meetings and establish a more personal connection. It can lead to a deeper understanding of the other person's needs and goals, which can ultimately help you provide better service or products. Additionally, in-person meetings can help address any concerns or issues more quickly and efficiently, preventing them from becoming more significant problems down the line.

Attending industry events, trade shows, and conferences can provide networking opportunities, learning about new trends, and meeting potential clients and partners.

Networking can be invaluable for building relationships, finding new clients or partners, and staying up-to-date with industry best practices. For example, attending a trade show can provide opportunities to showcase your products or services, meet potential clients, and learn about the latest market trends.

  • Competitive Advantage

Companies prioritizing business travel and investing in face-to-face meetings with clients and partners can gain a competitive advantage over those relying solely on digital communication. By meeting with clients and partners in person, companies can establish more personal connections and build trust, leading to more business opportunities and revenue.

Here's a  business travel checklist  to make business travel for your employees less stressful.

Business Transient

Different Types of Business Travel

Business travel can take many forms, depending on the purpose of the trip and the activities involved. Here are some of the most common types of business travel:

  • Event and Conference Travel:  Companies often send employees to corporate events and conferences where attendees can learn and network with peers, potential clients, and service providers.
  • Training and Education: Companies may send employees to conferences and workshops to learn about trends and best practices in their functional areas. These events can provide valuable opportunities for professional development and networking, helping employees stay up-to-date on the latest industry developments and build relationships with others in their field.
  • Internal Meetings and Visiting Offices:  National and multinational companies may need to send employees and leadership to other offices to discuss specific projects and business strategies or to build a more integrated organizational culture.
  • Company Retreats:  Some companies hold retreats annually or multiple times yearly to help teams grow stronger and build company culture through shared activities.
  • Client Meetings:  Maintaining solid relationships with existing clients is crucial for many businesses. Account managers and others may regularly visit their most prominent clients to check in on them, take them out for a meal or drink, and generally show gratitude for their business. These visits can strengthen relationships and potentially lead to additional business.
  • Trade Fairs:  Many organizations attend trade shows and expos to display their products and services and connect with potential clients. Attending these events can effectively generate leads and build relationships with potential customers, especially in industries where face-to-face interactions are critical.
  • Transfers and Offshore Work:  Long-term transfers involve relocating employees to a different city or country for a certain period, usually to work on a specific project or set up a new function or business process.
  • Transient Travel:   Business transient  travelers typically refer to individuals who frequently travel for short periods, often for a business meeting or work-related. These travelers usually stay in hotels or temporary accommodations and frequently move between locations for work or other activities.
  • Bleisure Travel:  This hybrid travel style combines business and leisure travel, allowing employees to extend their business trips to leave time for sightseeing and relaxation. Bleisure travel can benefit employers and employees, encouraging employees to volunteer for business trips more often and providing a relaxing break.

Top Challenges To Manage Business Travel

As many businesses need help managing company travel, several issues affect day-to-day operations. These include:

  • Managing Large Numbers of Requests

When managing large numbers of travel requests, keeping track of all the information and ensuring that requests are processed efficiently can be challenging. It can result in delays and frustration for employees waiting for travel approvals or information.

For example, imagine a small company with just one finance person responsible for managing all travel requests. They receive requests from various team members in different formats—email, Slack messages, and in-person visits. It can lead to confusion and delays in processing the requests and distract the finance person from other essential tasks.

  • Tracking Approvals

It's a massive headache if your company's travel approvals are manually emailed. Tracking travel approvals can be time-consuming and prone to errors. It can result in missed approvals, delayed travel, and frustration for employees waiting for approval.

Imagine a team member submits a travel request, and the finance person then sends an email to the manager for approval. If the manager is busy or forgets to respond, the request may be delayed or even missed altogether, causing frustration for the employee who is scheduled to travel.

  • Keeping Spending in Check

Managing travel costs can be difficult, especially when employees book trips independently or through different channels. It can result in overspending and frustration for finance teams who aim to keep costs under control.

For example, imagine a company where employees book travel through different channels. Some employees book expensive hotels and flights, while others find cheaper options on discount travel websites. It can lead to inconsistency in travel costs and make it difficult for the finance team to manage and budget travel expenses.

  • Being Flexible

Flexible travel policies can result in consistency, especially when balancing cost control with employee satisfaction. It can result in frustration for both employees and finance teams.

For example, a business with restrictive travel policies can limit employees to specific airlines, hotels, and routes. It may help control costs, restrict employee options, and make travel less enjoyable. On the other hand, if policies are flexible, employees may book expensive options outside the budget.

  • Reducing Errors

Reducing errors in travel management can be challenging, but it is essential to ensure accurate tracking of expenses and approvals. This can help prevent delays and frustration for employees and finance teams.

How Companies Can Manage Business Travel

Companies must make the process straightforward to ensure that team members comply with travel policies. If the process is simple, team members will find ways to circumvent the rules, and compliance will improve. The following are some common pitfalls to avoid:

  • Too many rules:  Too many, incredibly confusing or contradictory, can be overwhelming and frustrating for team members. It can lead to non-compliance or errors.
  • A high number of touches:  Too many touchpoints, like requiring additional emails to managers for approval, can slow down the process and make it difficult.
  • Lots of manual steps:  Requiring team members to file printed documents and receipts can be time-consuming and create opportunities for errors.
  • Unclear processes:  If team members are unsure of the steps or rules they must follow, they may become frustrated and disengage from the process.

To ensure compliance and simplify the process, use  a corporate travel management system  that walks employees through each step. By automating the process and making it easy and intuitive, team members are more likely to follow the rules and comply with company policies.

What is a Business Travel Solution?

A travel management system is a software platform that helps companies manage their employees' travel-related activities and expenses. These systems can be purpose-built tools from third parties or developed in-house by large companies. However, building a travel management system from scratch doesn't make sense with the availability of business travel management tools out of the box for a relatively low cost.

These systems aim to oversee, regulate, and coordinate a company's employees' travel activities and expenses. Previously, a company's office administrators or a dedicated travel manager would handle these tasks. However, with a travel management system, these manual tasks can be streamlined or automated, freeing up staff for more valuable work than monitoring others' travel plans.

A  business travel solution  typically offers features such as online booking, expense tracking, policy compliance, travel budgeting, and reporting. They make booking, managing, and tracking business travel much simpler and more efficient for companies and their employees.

As a business, it's essential to recognize the value of investing in business travel. There are numerous reasons why companies send their employees on these trips, including closing deals, exploring new markets, holding internal meetings, prospecting, educating, and visiting existing clients. These opportunities provide valuable experiences and insights to enhance your company's operations and bottom line.

However, managing business travel can present challenges, such as managing large requests, tracking approvals, and dealing with changes in travel plans. To address these challenges, it's crucial to have a straightforward and streamlined travel policy outlining the process for requesting, approving, and booking travel and any expense and reimbursement policies.

Another essential aspect of managing business travel is providing support and resources to employees while on the road. It includes ensuring they have the necessary technology and tools to stay connected and productive, providing guidance on safety and security, and offering access to travel support services in emergencies.

By recognizing the importance of business travel and implementing strategies to manage it effectively, your company can reap the benefits of enhanced collaboration, improved relationships with clients and partners, and increased opportunities for growth and success.

So let your employees stay connected, build relationships and enjoy their next business trip!

The Hidden Benefits of Short-Term Business Travel

  • Andy Molinsky
  • Melissa Hahn

business trip advantage and disadvantage

Make the most of even the briefest trip.

Much has been written about long-term expatriate assignments , but for many of us, a more common “assignment” is the short-term business trip — that four-day jaunt to Dubai or the there-and-back trip to Buenos Aires. Too often, these whirlwind treks leave us numb. As we move from one hotel chain to another and order the same Starbucks drink in London that we do in Shanghai or Tokyo, it can feel like just another business trip as opposed to a personally meaningful cross-cultural adventure.

Connect with him on LinkedIn and download his free e-booklet of 7 myths about working effectively across cultures .

4 business-travel policies that can help employees avoid burnout and stay mentally well during a work trip

  • Employees are often eager to take business trips, but travel can be exhausting.
  • Business Insider spoke with three business leaders about improving the work-travel experience.
  • They suggested offering post-travel PTO, upgrading accommodations, and limiting frequent travel.
  • This article is part of " Business Travel Playbook ," a series about making the most of work travel.

Insider Today

Business travel provides opportunities to meet clients face-to-face , attend conferences, and explore new markets, but there are some drawbacks. During a business trip, employees are away from their families , their normal routines are disrupted, and they typically log in longer hours, which can be stressful.

But these challenges aren't deterrents: According to a 2023 Global Business Travel Association report, business travel spending is expected to return to its pre-pandemic total of $1.4 trillion in 2024 and grow to nearly $1.8 trillion by the end of 2027.

With business travel playing an important role in many workplaces, Business Insider spoke with three business leaders for their advice on how companies can help business travelers mitigate stress and avoid burnout. They recommended the following four policies.

1. Provide PTO after a business trip.

Business travelers who've spent several days away are often expected to return to the office and continue as if they'd never left, which can exacerbate stress.

Danielle Sabrina, the founder and CEO of the public-relations firm Society22 , travels weekly for work. She said employers could ease the burden of business travel by allowing employees to take time off after a business trip to recover.

"Benefits like lenient PTO policies that allow for recovery time and account for travel time can ensure employees are well-rested and show up to work as their best selves," Sabrina said. "These measures collectively contribute to preventing burnout, enhancing job satisfaction, and promoting a healthier, more productive work environment."

Natalie Norfus, the founder of the independent human-resources company The Norfus Firm , also recommended a rest period after a business trip.

Employees who travel for work may be primary caretakers of children, pets, or older family members, Norfus said. Since business travel often disrupts a person's routines and work-life balance, employees may need a day or two before returning to work.

"If an employee has been on a weeklong business trip, the company should mandate a minimum of one or two days of rest," Norfus said. "This policy allows employees to recover from jet lag, catch up on personal time, and reduce the cumulative stress of travel. This also requires that the employee's work priorities are properly balanced so that they feel they have the space to take the rest period without worrying about catching up on work."

2. Don't allow meetings on travel days.

Whether a work trip includes commuting to a nearby city or traveling to another country, business travel can be tiring. When employees arrive at their destination, they should have the rest of the day to settle before attending meetings or events.

"My secret to achieving the perfect balance on a work trip lies in prioritizing rest and nutrition over a hectic schedule," Sabrina said. "Opting for a more relaxed approach, I often arrive a day before my meetings, ensuring a restful night's sleep."

People who fly might experience delays, which is all the more reason for companies to avoid scheduling meetings or events on travel days.

"Dealing with the logistics of travel — such as flight delays, cancellations, lost luggage, and navigating unfamiliar places — adds an extra layer of complexity and potential stress to the trip," Norfus said, adding that she'd often experienced delays herself in the past year.

3. Book upgraded flights or premium accommodations.

Ashlee Brennan, the vice president of leave compliance at AbsenceSoft, a scheduling platform for HR professionals, said company travel policies should provide business-class seats for longer flights or at least the option to upgrade.

"Employers should allow an employee to pay extra for a specific airline seat based on physical limitations or restrictions," Brennan said. "Another policy could be not requiring employees to pick the cheapest flight, but instead, pick the one that works with their schedule and personal obligations."

Staying in more comfortable accommodations can also boost employee morale. Premium hotels with amenities such as a gym and spa are helpful for employees who want to work out or decompress after a long day .

"Companies should book upgraded hotels when trips extend beyond a day or two," Sabrina told BI. "Staying at premium hotels not only enhances comfort but also adds efficiency to my journey, thanks to the array of amenities and the abundance of health-conscious food choices that upscale establishments typically offer."

4. Scale business travel as needed.

For many employees, the best way to mitigate stress from business travel is to limit the number of business trips they take.

"Setting a cap on the frequency of business trips can prevent burnout," Norfus said. "This could mean limiting the number of trips an employee can take per month or quarter. It's important to assess the necessity of each trip and explore alternatives like videoconferencing."

Employees who have tended to travel often may need to sit down with their managers and discuss how many business trips they can take while maintaining a balanced schedule.

"It's important to be realistic about how much work travel you can endure and how much work you can realistically complete if your job requires frequent travel," Norfus said. "Once you're clear about your needs, communicate openly and regularly with your manager and request accommodations, like flexible scheduling or reworking deadlines and priorities, to help manage stress."

Along with taking fewer trips, employees can request accommodations like an adjustable schedule or the option to attend fewer social events .

"Business travelers should be up front with their managers about their comfort level around travel and whether there are any benefits that would help make the experience easier," Brennan said. "Business travel is often integral to many professions. However, employees need to understand that they are not obligated to participate in every social gathering during a weeklong trip, and they have the option to ask for accommodations that can make traveling easier."

Best Way to Plan Your Travel Trip

Advantages and Disadvantages of Business Travel

Generally, business travel is an incredible experience that most people only dream of. Some people opt to travel for work on their own while others also do so for corporate multinationals, attending exhibitions, wooing investors, and closing deals among other businesses.

Nevertheless, people have different opinions regarding the merits and shortcomings of business travel. Check out the following advantages and disadvantages of business travel.

Advantages

Meeting New People

Regardless of where you travel for work, there are always opportunities for meeting new people, sharing career ideas, making friends, and learning about different cultures. Those activities will make your trips quite fun with so many life lessons to learn.

Traveling the World for Free

The fact that you are traveling for work means you get to earn while touring too. Most business trips are often all-expenses-paid vacations whereby only your attendance is required. The covered expenses usually include transportation, accommodation, and food. Some corporate executives will also get fully-paid entertainment to make the trips memorable.

Disadvantages

Benefits of business travel for corporate companies

A fully sponsored trip with potential opportunities to network with new people will sound exciting for any employee. Even if business travel is another means of working away from the office, it’s still enjoyable.

But how do these benefits of business travel matter to a business? Do they really like sending their employees on trips, or do they consider it a waste of money?

Frankly, many businesses don’t see this as an opportunity but as an additional expense. And in the times of Zoom and online meetings, business trips are on the verge of their downfall.

If technology is ready to bridge the gap, why should companies invest in this and let employees clock in from anywhere? Let’s find out!

What does business travel involve?

Business travel differs from one group of employees to another. The major process involved is transportation. The employee must take a cab if it’s an inter-city meeting or a flight if it’s across cities or the country.

If the stay is going to be longer, the traveling employee will need a place to stay. Hence, a hotel reservation must be made before the trip, confirming the duration and room rent.

Travel expenses will also include cab fares for the trips between the airport and the hotel or hotel to the venue. Some businesses sponsor the coffee and lunches they have while on travel.

Once the employee has fulfilled the purpose of the visit, they will check out and fly back to their own destination.

In layman's terms, business travel is mostly for meeting prospects or potential stakeholders to discuss things in person. Or it can be just visiting another branch, warehouse, or inventory of the company or attending a business conference.

The purpose of the travel can differ, but the itinerary will be more or less similar to what’s shared above.

What are the benefits of business travel for companies?

Business travel benefits both employees and employers in some ways. Though it’s your employees who travel, they carry your company name as their identity. Hence, the benefits are mutual always.

1. More networking opportunities

One of the main benefits of business travel is that it opens up a whole new world of opportunities where one gets to meet and network with people from all walks of life. Employees with good interpersonal skills can form strong connections when such instances happen.

This extended network of theirs will benefit not only them but also the company they represent.

The people they meet there can be potential clients, investors, reliable suppliers, or someone with a goldmine of contacts and recommendations.

If an employee takes up a branch visit, they can also meet other employees, interact with them, and strengthen their cross-departmental bonding.

It pays the way to clear communication issues that have existed so far due to online or telephonic talks. Both parties get the necessary information and coaching they need about the other team.

2. Meeting prospective clients

Bumping into clients in unusual circumstances is quite a surprising one. If your employee is a smooth talker, they can get the prospect interested in your product without even pitching.

This is very different from leads that come through generic channels. And it has a high potential to get converted into an active buyer.

It’s the most organic way to promote your business and receive contacts of leads. By developing a great travel culture where employees travel in a stress-free manner, they can be indirect propagators of your business.

3. Face-to-face meetings

For basic communication and information exchange, online calls and emails will work. For stuff beyond that, in-person meetings serve more value. Face-to-face meetings are effective as you can both see and listen.

You can weigh their body language and see if they are really interested in what you are offering. What happens after a series of meetings and email follow-ups can actually be wrapped up in one face-to-face meeting.

You will be standing out from the crowd as most of your competitors stick with safe options like online meetups. If you compare a face-to-face meeting with an online chat, the former has a 35% higher success rate than the latter.

4. Experience new cultures & different ways of working

Traveling and working from new locations has a lot to offer from a learning point of view. The employee is exposed to newer environments and work culture and gets to bring that back to your office.

It can be a breath of fresh air for those around them as they learn from these experiences. Without spending much, your employees will gain new skills and knowledge that can aid their work life and career advancement.

By sending the young talents of your company on business trips, you boost their leadership and decision-making skills by observing how others do it.

5. Tax write-offs

Certain expenses of businesses qualify for tax write-offs or deductions. Travel expenses are one among them in many parts of the world. Travel expenses that are fully related to your business qualify for tax deductions.

In Singapore, businesses can avail of up to 50% tax exemption on travel tickets, meals, and hotel charges. In India, all travel-related expenses except foreign trips are eligible for tax exemptions.

Tax write-offs are one of the primary benefits of business travel that makes many businesses consider these expenses to be allowable.

6. Exposed to higher-profile projects

Business travel is an added perk for employees who want to engage with influential professionals and climb up the corporate ladder.

They get to travel to different locations, solve major business problems, and become part of high-profile projects.

They are introduced to other dimensions and elements of the company and contribute more than what their job profile warrants.

Online discussions and meetings can make this happen too, but not in an effective way like this.

7. Awarded with points and miles

Business travel expenses are mostly carried out through corporate credit cards.

These cards have points or offers for every ticket that’s booked using that. Both corporate and personal cards have many offers and points that get added to the account and used next time.

Even if the employee uses their personal funds to book tickets and receive reimbursement later, the perks are still applicable. Instead of reimbursing the entire spending account, your finance team will have a reduced spend value.

8. Helps avoid employee burnout

Following the same routine for the long term only leads to the burnout stage. This is when your employees stop being productive and see a dip in their performance. That affects your business too.

Taking a break from their regular work style and traveling to other locations help busy employees let off some steam. In a hectic work life, travel and vacation are not given much importance.

If it’s not for a lengthy vacation, you can help your employees travel frequently for business purposes. This is how you can do your part to make sure your employees are physically and mentally fit.

Challenges associated with managing business travel?

The benefits of business travel are many. But it’s not always rosy. There are many teams involved in the business trip of one employee. And it’s too much to process with high accuracy.

Some challenges businesses face are,

1. Tougher reimbursement process

Reimbursement is how employees get the money back from their company that they spent while traveling. Not all costs can be covered, but those related closely to the business.

They go through multiple steps to complete this process. Employees are supposed to carry receipts and submit them for verification.

It’s the limitations of the reimbursement process that makes it hard for employees to follow every time they come back from a business trip.

If they lose a receipt or bank charges slip, they have no other way to justify the expense. This is why an automated reimbursement system with a mobile application must be implemented.

2. Cutting down on travel costs

You create an expense category and assign a budget. And suddenly it becomes too unaffordable. Compared to other costs, travel costs can quickly get out of hand as the spending is always external.

It is challenging to keep this under control or set the price at a more grounded state. As there is no real-time measurement happening, tracking these expenses is of zero help.

Whatever values you have in your expense reports are shared by your employee. And the actual cost of their trip could be lower than what they reported too.

Hence, adjusting the policies or keeping the costs under control sounds too challenging for the finance team and they just lose it in the end.

3. Drafting effective travel policy

It’s a rule of thumb to consider all billable travel expenses before designing the expense policy. The travel policy is what guides employees on what kind of expenses are allowed for reimbursements and what not.

Also, you can’t use the same policy for years. The price rise and changes in the way employees travel must be taken into account. The same policy will not work for two different professionals with unique travel needs.

That has to be customized depending on their needs too. Above all, fairness is required to be maintained on both ends.

Employees must be clearly informed about what they spend on and how much. Lack of communication is what irks them most and makes them hate policies.

4. Complying with travel policy

Having a travel policy is mandatory to regulate spending made by employees. Having them in papers is okay.

But finance teams strive hard to apply that to every expense and enforce it strictly. Travel policies without any automated system are futile. It takes manual effort to detect and reject expenses that don’t fit under the travel policy.

Finance teams will have to spread awareness among employees to not encourage such expenditures. More often than not, your employees will be spending over what has been set as the spending limit.

Finance teams cannot approve more than what’s allowed. The difference in the amounts will be incurred by the employee whether or not they like it.

5. Controlling travel expense fraud

There is always that one employee who likes to play around and exploit the privileges offered. They use fake proof or add a few numbers to the actual amount to gain more than what’s spent.

Not paying heed and approving these only bring loss to the company. Yes, violations happen when there is no clear understanding of policies. But it also happens with the negative intention of stealing the company’s money.

If not caught, they make this a habit and keep indulging in more expense frauds. Among all small business frauds, 21% alone accounts for fraudulent expense claims.

6. Lack of communication with other departments

Expense report is submitted by one person from the operations or marketing department. But that’s approved and processed by the finance and accounting team.

The team leader, manager, or HR will also be involved in primary approval processes. Some teams have booking managers who do the booking themselves and share the ticket.

In any case, it involves too many people in one instance. For a startup that’s managed remotely, this will be a nightmare.

Every team will have its own portals or spreadsheets that others cannot access. So they either look at stand-alone systems with outdated data or rely on others for cues to proceed next.

This only leads to delays, inefficiencies, and broken communication. When something goes wrong, each one blames the other rather than being accountable.

Opens in a new tab.

Even though there are many benefits associated with business travel, in this article, we will show you the five main ones associated with business travel.

Let’s dive right in!

5 main benefits of business travel

Here are our five main benefits for business travel:

1. Builds confidence

business trip advantage and disadvantage

A huge benefit business travel will give you is the ability to get out of your comfort zone and build confidence while traveling. We all have an issue of staying in our comfort zone, which also impacts our professional and personal lives, but we need to push past our comfort zone and welcome new experiences.

Going to the office every day is just a boring daily routine, and isn’t something that challenges us since you have to repeat the same tasks daily. And guess what? Doing the same things every single day drops our confidence, which will later impact how we feel in our professional and personal lives.

Travel builds your confidence by making you adapt to new environments and gives you new challenges you have to overcome. That is just how our brain works, when it gets exposed to new things, it’ll feel good about it. Closing a deal, building a new business relationship will provide you with the vast confidence boost you are looking for.

2. You get to enjoy new experiences

Especially if you love to see new places or try new foods when you are traveling, business travel is your chance to enjoy the moment. Or maybe you are even someone who loves to visit historical objects, then this is your chance. The most important experience of traveling is to enjoy the experience itself and not think about what can go wrong.

Even when you are traveling for business purposes, we know time might be tight, but of course, you will have some free time to check what is around. Discovering something new is just another experience for you, and when you get used to it, it means you will get better at being flexible to adapt to new environments.

3. Allows you to have face-to-face meetings

business trip advantage and disadvantage

If you think about it, even in our personal life, we can’t enhance our friendships, relationships by communicating remotely, it just doesn’t work. Real life interactions are different, allow you to express yourself better and even find out more about the person you are talking to through facial expressions and even the way they communicate with their body.

In short, face-to-face meetings are essential if you want to establish a more successful business relationship and allow it to be longer-lasting. Otherwise, virtual business relationships are limited and don’t have the same feeling you would have in real life.

4. Ability to meet new people

Relationships are essential for humans and the success of their lifelong experiences. It isn’t easy to establish them whenever you are in the office meeting the same people every day.  Traveling gives you the opportunity to meet someone new, maybe they might be a new close friend, a future employer, or even a person that may help you with something else.

Life is full of surprises so you can’t really predict what is going to happen the next day and one thing may lead to another. Meeting new people from another country may even make things easier for your personal life, just as much as your business one.

Even if you go on a personal trip to a country you have traveled to with your company, new contacts will help orient you with things you may face trouble with. Now, you understand how helpful it can actually be.

5. Helps avoid employee burnout

business trip advantage and disadvantage

Business traveling helps solve this issue, as you are going to new places, it helps you feel that your life is experiencing changes.

Is business travel meaningful at a workplace?

For every business that is included with traveling, it directly does affect how employees feel about their position at the workplace. When you and your team are traveling to different places around the world, it can even affect your team’s relationship and how they think about their job.

Nobody ever said you only have to work together at the office or during work hours, but being together outside the office is vital too! The sky is the limit, so it is essential you break those limits and seek to find fulfillment from every business travel experience you get to have.

Wrapping it up

Well, that’s about it for this article. Hopefully, now you see how beneficial business traveling can actually be for you and your employees. Remember, continuously doing the same things over and over can get exhausting. In short, you don’t want to be that grumpy person who is tired of work and feels like there isn’t anything better to do, so this is your chance to help employees and even yourself avoid burnout.

This article goes into an in-depth review of the significant benefits that come with business traveling. Read through each of the five benefits we stated carefully and see how they relate to you and your business. Are you the same person, and do you feel the same way?

Otherwise, take this opportunity to enjoy the moment with your colleagues and even for your own personal experiences. After all, you and your colleagues will have a lot of stories to tell once you guys are done with corporate traveling!

business travel benefits

You probably know how business travel benefits companies, but are you aware of all the ways that it benefits the employee traveling? Business travel is about more than meeting new prospects, closing sales deals, growing the top line, giving presentations, and strengthening client relationships.  Here are 5 great additional benefits:

1. Experiencing New Places

We know that when you’re traveling for business, much of your time will be spent doing just that – business. However, carving out just a little time during each trip to experience the sights, sounds – and food – a place has to offer can add so much to your trip! Instead of a boring, humdrum business trip, you get the opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture of the place you’re visiting – whether you’re in Dubai, Paris or Atlanta, Georgia.

2. Meeting New People

One of the greatest advantages to traveling for business is the people you get to meet along the way. Besides the added benefit of meeting the people you’re doing business with face to face, you are able to build your network so that it expands across the nation and, possibly, the world. This also gives you a personal connection to each of the places you’ve visited, making every trip a bit more memorable.

3. Breaking Up the Monotony

Traveling for business ensures that you’ll never get stuck in the rut of daily routine. Instead of the normal Get up–Go to work–Come home, you get to go to new places and meet new people. It gives you the chance to get out of the office and stretch your legs a bit. And when you return to your office, it feels a little bit more like coming home.

4. Preparing for Other Travel

Business travel can do a lot to help you plan and execute future travel plans. You’ll know all the ins and outs of successful travel as well as being a whiz at packing. You’re used to getting everything you need into one little carry-on; imagine what you could do with an entire suitcase!

5. Finding New Destinations

And last, but definitely not least, business travel can provide you with ideas for future destinations. Maybe you loved San Francisco and want to spend a week there. Or perhaps someone you met in Berlin who spoke so well of Amsterdam you want to see it for yourself. Traveling for business can open doors to places you would have never experienced before.

Advantages Of Business Travel

The word travel can excite some of you deep down, and of course, it is fun most of the time. And in the case of business travel, you are also doing something productive, which is ultimately a good thing. Therefore let’s talk about what are the possible advantages of business travel, and how these things can benefit you. Let’s find out.

1. Opportunities for Networking

Business trips bring along a world of opportunities to meet and connect with potential clients, partners, and colleagues. Events like conferences and trade shows become prime spots for networking with like-minded professionals. These connections can turn into valuable business relationships and even personal friendships, all of which contribute to your career and your company’s prosperity.

2. Broadening Business Horizons

Hitting the road for business purposes can be a fantastic way to extend your company’s reach into untapped markets. Discover new regions and forge relationships with possible customers or collaborators. By doing so, you can grow your customer base and boost your revenue. Plus, expanding your business adds diversity to your revenue streams, making your company more resilient and less susceptible to economic hiccups.

3. Climbing the Career Ladder

Business travel can be a priceless experience for career growth. You’ll pick up new skills and viewpoints, as well as get a taste of different cultures and business practices. This exposure can help you advance in your career and achieve your professional aspirations. For instance, if international business piques your interest, traveling abroad can offer priceless insights into how business works across the globe.

4. Exposure to New Cultures and Perspectives

Business travel opens the door to experiencing new cultures and perspectives, broadening your horizons and leading to personal growth. You’ll learn about different customs, languages, and lifestyles. When you are exploring new cultures, you’ll automatically start looking at things with a new perspective, which can be really beneficial for you in your career path.

5. Tax Benefits

And did you know that business travel expenses can be tax-deductible, which can help trim the overall cost of your trip? Well, that’s another perk of business travel. All your expenses related to transportation, meals, stay, and other business-related costs can also be tax-deductible. Disadvantages Of Business Travel

Before you go ahead and book your next flight, you may wanna consider some of the downsides of business travel. As always, there are some potential downsides here as well. Let’s see whether they apply to you or not.

1. Time Away From Loved Ones

Perhaps one of the biggest bummers about business travel is the time you spend away from your loved ones. This can be super tough, especially if you’ve got young kids waiting back home. Striking a work-life balance can be quite a juggling act. And even if you’re flying solo, being away for extended periods can make you feel lonely. To keep those connections strong, make sure you chat regularly with your loved ones via phone or video calls.

2. Physical And Mental Exhaustion

Let’s face it, business travel can wear you out, both physically and mentally. Whether it’s jet lag, sleep disruptions, or just plain long hours, you might feel like you’re running on empty. And it’s hard to stay focused and productive when you’re drained. To keep your energy up, remember to hydrate, eat right, and refresh your mind whenever you get time for that.

3. Increased Stress

Business trips can crank up stress levels, especially when you’re rushing to important meetings or scrambling to meet deadlines. The pressure to deliver can be intense, and having your routine thrown off doesn’t help. To keep your mind cool, try to keep things in perspective, prioritize tasks, and take breaks when you need to.

4. Dodging Health Hazards

Travel can expose you to a whole bunch of health risks, from illnesses to accidents and other safety concerns. This can be extra worrisome if you’re headed to places with sketchy healthcare or unfamiliar surroundings. To stay on the safe side, make sure to get vaccinated, practice good hygiene, and research potential health risks at your destination.

5. Financial Burden

Let’s not forget that business travel can cost a pretty penny. With expenses like transportation, accommodations, meals, and more, the bills can add up fast. And if you’re a frequent traveler, your wallet could really take a hit. To keep those costs in check, be smart about budgeting, book early for the best rates, and consider alternative options for lodging and transport.

All in all, venturing into the world of business travel can be a blend of ups and downs. Sure, it’s jam-packed with countless chances to broaden your network, expand your perspective, climb the career ladder, soak up new cultures, and even snag some tax perks. But, let’s not sugarcoat it, you’ll also be juggling time apart from family, battling fatigue, coping with stress, dodging health risks, and dealing with a tight wallet. However, finding the sweet spot between these aspects can help you seize the amazing potential of business travel while keeping the downsides in check, turning it into a fruitful and exhilarating journey.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Travelling

As with many other things in life, there are both pros and cons to travel; ups and downs. Here, we explain the advantages and disadvantages of traveling to help you make up your own mind.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Travelling

Pros and cons of travelling

I'm a big fan of traveling. The more I travel, the less I want to stay in one place for too long! Travel is a great way to broaden your horizons and see the world. But it also has its drawbacks too, including being away from loved ones for long periods of time.

While cycling around the world , I've often felt both simultaneously elated at all that beauty of nature, but at the same time saddened that there wasn't anyone to share it with. I'm sure other long term travelers, especially solo travelers, feel exactly the same way from time to time.

Dave Briggs cycling in Greece

In this blog post we'll look at the advantages and disadvantages of travelling. If you're planning to travel for extended periods of time, you might want to keep some of these in mind.

Advantages of Travel

Lets kick of with the many advantages – and I'll give you a spoiler now, the travelling advantages far outweigh the disadvantages!

Taking the less trodden path

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step

Traveling can be educational

We all learn something from travelling, regardless of whether it's about culture, life or people in general. If nothing else, hearing others speak another language and seeing different cultures helps us realize how similar we all are in so many ways.

It is also good for self-development as we generally become more open minded and appreciate other people more when we travel.

Traveling can broaden your horizons

Travelling gives us the chance to see things with our own eyes that normally we would never find out about if not from traveling; especially traveling out of our comfort zone (something I encourage everyone to do).

Imagine not knowing the existence of ancient temples in Cambodia, Peru or Sudan just a decade ago! Now you do…

Ankor Wat in Cambodia

Traveling gives us a new perspective on life

Seeing things from a different perspective is important. It helps us realize how lucky we are to live where and with who we do in this world.

Travelling can also help us appreciate what we have more by comparison, even though it's not always easy to accept that when abroad.

Related: Why do people like to travel?

Travelling teaches us humility

OK… this doesn't sound like an advantage but I think it is. When speaking about tourism – which both has its advantages and disadvantages – some people believe that travel teaches your humility.

It makes you understand how others live and thrive without the luxuries that you are accustomed to. It makes you realize how lucky you really are, and it allows your mind to open up as opposed to being more judgmental of differences

Traveling can help us grow in confidence

Many people feel they have no personality or direction when they first start travelling – but it's important not to let that stop you. Travelling helps us realize who we really are, and what we want from life.

Once this happens, our confidence grows; and without realizing, we become much stronger than before the trip ! This is especially true with solo backpacking trips !

Traveling can help you speak a new language

It's amazing how fast your language skills improve when you travel to new places! Speaking a new language or two is always good, and it's easier to learn a language when you're traveling.

Now, I'm never going to say my Greek is perfect. It's actually quite terrible. But I can find one or two things on a menu if I have to!

Add to that the fact that you're surrounded by native speakers and it's all a major travel benefit.

Traveling opens up new opportunities

Travelling often opens doors for future work opportunities if your planning on becoming employment after traveling; or even if you want to start your own business overseas.

It also opens doors socially, and tends to make us more open-minded people. You might even end up like me, and move to a different country on a more permanent basis!

Traveling helps you leave behind the stresses of home

Will you wave goodbye to your troubles the moment you step on a plane? For some, absolutely! For others, not so much…

However, you are about to go on an adventure. No matter what your stress levels are at home before you depart for your trip, they will drop considerably when you're traveling.

As soon as the journey begins, it feels like a different world and suddenly all of those problems that were previously weighing down upon us seem less important.

It's easy to convince ourselves this is because we're in a foreign country and don't know anyone here; but really our attitude is what makes this change possible.

Traveling abroad introduces you to new cultures

When we travel abroad, we are often exposed to different cultures and ways of life. This is a good way for us (if we let it) to see the bigger picture of life; that thing that all humans have in common regardless of background or upbringing.

Most people I know who travel come back having a much broader perspective on life and learn to accept all the different ways of living in one world. It also gives people a newfound confidence, which has positive effects on the course of their lives.

Traveling exposes you to new ideas

Similar to being exposed to new cultures, traveling also opens your eyes to new ways of thinking.

To a certain extent, travelling can help us question the way we view our own lives; helping us gain more confidence about what WE believe is best for ourselves instead of automatically following what our parents or society tells us is “right”.

It's not always easy! However, it's about breaking free from limiting beliefs that are holding you back…

What to do with your wild and precious life

Traveling helps you understand life better

The whole point of traveling is to experience life from a different point of view, right? This means you learn more about yourself and how others see the world.

You see that things aren't always as they seem; and this can only be a good thing! Humans are complex beings with many layers that we often don't understand. Traveling helps us understand these layers – or at least try to understand them.

Traveling teaches new skills (for those who are willing)

Nowadays most people go on vacation for the sole purpose of relaxation… but never underestimate the importance or joy of learning while travelling!

There are some really great lessons you can take back home with you once your trip is over (if you're open to these lessons). Being a part of different cultures in the world can teach us so much, if we are willing to learn.

These cultural differences may seem small at first – but eventually you see how they really impact the way people live their lives.

Traveling helps meet new friends and creates life long connections

Have you ever experienced that moment when you shake hands with someone in another country, and have an instant connection? It happens!

Our trekking group in Nepal

And it doesn't matter what nationality or background you come from – this sort of connection is special 🙂 In fact, it's one thing I love most about traveling; meeting these incredible people who are all unique in their own ways.

Tasting all those new foods

If traveling is about experiencing life from a new perspective, then why not try the foods? Eating may seem like some kind of “simple pleasure” while you're on your trip… but eating can teach us a lot!

Eating some food in Bagan

You'll learn about the ingredients used in cooking (such as spices) and will also gain knowledge about how certain food items are produced.

You'll taste things that you would never have before – things so unique they are impossible to find back home. And sometimes you just get lucky enough to eat something really delicious!

Traveling creates unforgettable memories

One of the biggest pros of traveling is creating memories that last a lifetime. These are pictures and new experiences that we get to take with us on our journey through life.

They are a constant reminder of where we've been and who we were when we got there. We will remember the people, interesting places and things that make us laugh, cry, smile or just plain think… And this can only be a good thing!

Traveling might help your career

A future employer might be impressed by your international experience, especially if you are applying for a job that is linked to other countries – such as marketing or business development. The aptitudes that you pick up such as problem solving may be a bonus in the eyes of a prospective employer.

Witnessing immense beauty of distant lands

When traveling, you get to witness immense beauty, sometimes in even the smallest things. You'll begin to understand that there's beauty everywhere you go if you just take a moment and stop to appreciate it.

Disadvantages of Traveling

While there are many important advantages to world travel, it's not all rainbows and unicorns! You'll soon become painfully aware that foreign travel for any length of time also has many challenges and some drawbacks.

Being away from your home country on a big trip for along time, perhaps in a place where you do not speak the native language can be hard at times.

It can cause social isolation (especially in long term solo travel)

This is especially true if you're traveling by yourself . You will be meeting new people all the time and whilst this is great, no one will ever replace your family and close friends. It's good to keep this in mind when going on a long trip so that you don't get depressed about being away from loved ones.

Related: Pros and cons of traveling the world by bike

We often lose touch with our roots

This is definitely more applicable to long-term travelers , but even short trips abroad can make us lose sight of who we really are and where we are from; which isn't such a bad thing if it helps us become more worldly or broadens our horizons

It can be lonely

This is especially true for solo travelers, but even with friends you may not see eye to eye on everything and become tired of one another's company throughout your trip. It's just the nature of traveling!

It can be overwhelming arriving in a new city, and not having great opportunities to meet people.

You'll be watching your bank account go steadily down

Unless you're working and traveling, or have some sort of an ongoing income, your bank balance can be a source of stress when you spend long periods of time overseas. Even if you do have an income, this money can quickly disappear!

Related: How to save for a trip

You might miss important events

When traveling for any reasonable period of time, the chances increase that you might miss important family and friend events back home. While you're living a different life, your family and friends will be getting on with theirs, which means engagements, weddings, births, and other significant milestones. You'll have to weigh up the cost of traveling vs. missing these special occasions.

You could get sick/unhealthy on the road

Although it's true that this can happen anywhere in the world , it happens much more often when traveling . The reason for this is that we are exposed to so many new things, and thus our immune systems become slightly weakened. Going traveling also exposes us to bugs and diseases from every corner of the globe, which may not necessarily be friendly!

Related: Common Travel Mistakes And What Not To Do When Traveling

It might affect your career ladder

Travel, especially for extended periods of time, can have genuine disadvantages when it comes to your career opportunities. Most employers might ask, quite reasonably, if you are likely to take off on another trip. Another downside is that if you have been away for a while, you might be behind at work, and it can take some time to catch up when you get back.

Wrapping up the advantages and disadvantages of travelling

Traveling is one of the best ways to grow and explore, but it also has some downsides.

There are a number of advantages that come with traveling – meeting new friends, learning about exotic cultures, broadening your horizons, etc…

But there are also disadvantages like social isolation (especially in long term solo travel), losing touch with roots/loved ones back home in your own country, loneliness and getting sick while on the road.

The decision whether or not to go travelling will be up to you; however this article should provide you with some insight as to what might happen when venturing out into our vast world.

If all this talk about pros and cons has got you thinking seriously about going on an adventure of your own; don't hesitate! We would love to hear all about your plans, so feel free to leave a comment below. Good luck and have fun!

FAQ about travel pros and cons

Here are some of the questions that people often ask me about pros and cons of traveling, so I will address them here:

What are the disadvantages of traveling?

The first disadvantage of traveling is that it you have to put in your hard earned money. It might not be too much but it will cost you something in the end. The second disadvantage is that there are social isolation issues which come with traveling on a long-term basis, especially if you are travelling alone.

What are some advantages of traveling?

The first thing that we should point out is that traveling can be really fun. There are many ways to see the world and have adventure, and it's a good way to spend time on your own especially if you're looking for some space from lifelong friendships and family. Traveling can also help us become more worldly or broaden our horizons, as well as helping us to understand life better as it exposes us to different cultures and ways of life.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of travelling abroad?

The advantages of travelling include an opportunity to broaden your horizons, interact with different cultures, and learn more about our own culture when we return home. However, there are also disadvantages to travelling abroad. For example, some disadvantages are the cost of traveling for long periods of time, social isolation (especially in solo travel), losing touch with our roots, and loneliness or lack of empathy for friends/family.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of traveling alone?

The advantages of traveling alone are that there is no one you have to make decisions with, and you can do whatever you want whenever you want! You can also get a lot of alone time, which many people find refreshing. It's a good way to escape the crowds and go off the beaten path. The disadvantages are that when you're traveling alone, it can be very lonely at times. There will be moments where you might not feel like talking to anyone or meeting new people, but if you spend your whole day by yourself in your hotel room, then it's not really that much fun. It can also be difficult going from place to place all by yourself without someone else to share in the experience with.

Pros and Cons of Traveling

Trump says 'the Black people' like him because he's been 'discriminated against' in the legal system

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Former President Donald Trump claimed that Black people like him because he has faced discrimination in the legal system, which is something they can relate to.

"I got indicted a second time and a third time and a fourth time, and a lot of people said that that’s why the Black people like me, because they have been hurt so badly and discriminated against, and they actually viewed me as I’m being discriminated against," he said.

"I’m being indicted for you, the American people. I’m being indicted for you, the Black population. I am being indicted for a lot of different groups by sick people, these are sick, sick people," Trump said Friday night in a speech at the Black Conservative Federation's annual gala, at which he received the "Champion of Black America" award.

Trump, throughout his nearly two-hour speech, suggested his support from Black Americans stem from their understanding of how corrupt systems can lead to "great evil."

"Some of the greatest evils in our nation's history have come from corrupt systems that try to target and subjugate others to deny them their freedom and to deny them their rights," Trump said. "I think that's why the Black people are so much on my side now because they see what's happening to me happens to them."

Trump said Black Americans showcased their support for him through their embrace of merchandise emblazoned with his mug shot .

"My mug shot — we’ve all seen the mug shot, and you know who embraced it more than anybody else? The Black population," Trump said. "You see Black people walking around with my mug shot, you know, they do shirts and they sell them for $19 apiece. It’s pretty amazing — millions by the way."

Trump appeared at the event with other Black Republican politicians, including Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, Reps. Wesley Hunt of Texas and Byron Donalds of Florida, and Ben Carson, who was Trump's Department of Housing and Urban Development secretary.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump at the closing arguments in the Trump Organization civil fraud trial in New York City on Jan. 11, 2024.

Adam Wasolis Sr., 33, from the Bronx, New York, said he agreed with Trump's characterization of his appeal to Black voters.

"I definitely understand why some Black men may feel they resonate with his issues, because most of the issues that have plagued black men were legal issues," said Wasolis, who is vice chair of the New York Young Republican Black Caucus.

Ahead of the gala, Jasmine Harris, the Biden campaign’s Black media director, called Trump an "anti-Black tyrant" and "the proud poster boy for modern racism."

"This is the same man who falsely accused the Central Park Five, questioned George Floyd’s humanity, compared his own impeachment trial to being lynched, and ensured the unemployment gap for Black workers spiked during his presidency," Harris said.

"Donald Trump has been showing Black Americans his true colors for years: An incompetent, anti-Black tyrant who holds us to such low regard that he publicly dined with white nationalists a week after declaring his 2024 candidacy," she added.

Trump, for his part, called Biden a "racist" Friday night.

"Joe Biden really has proven to be a very nasty and vicious racist. He's been a racist," Trump said. "Whether you like it or don't like it. I happen not to like it. Joe Biden really has proven to be a very nasty and vicious racist. He's been a racist. ... Biden spent years palling around with notorious segregationists, you know that."

The Biden campaign did not immediately return a request for comment on Trump's remarks.

Biden served with segregationists including former South Carolina Sen. Strom Thurmond, and he has touted his ability to compromise with them. This week, Biden said he had served with "real racists" in in his long career but that the current Republican Party was worse.

"I’ve served with Strom Thurmond. I’ve served with all these guys that have set terrible records on race. But guess what? These guys are worse. These guys do not believe in basic democratic principles," he said at a fundraiser in California.

Trump's comments come as his allies prepare to launch an effort to deliver a historic chunk of the Black vote to Republicans in the 2024 elections.

"We have coalition groups across the country that are set to roll out initiatives very, very soon in those communities, that will focus on voter outreach and engagement and things like messaging in Black communities," Darrell Scott, a Black Ohio-based pastor who is a Trump adviser and helping lead the effort, told NBC News.

Organizers for the Black Conservative Federation said during their event that they're mobilizing groups nationwide in hopes of ensuring Trump wins the majority of the Black male vote in a general election matchup against Biden.

"I believe that President Trump is going to get 50% of the Black male vote," Black Conservative Federation President Diante Johnson said. "The Democratic Party has literally pushed Black men aside."

advantages and disadvantages of PHP you should know when starting a new project

What is php used for, php features, advantages of php over other languages, php drawbacks, php costs of development and maintenance.

The EPAM Anywhere Editorial Team is an international collective of senior software engineers, managers and communications professionals who create, review and share their insights on technology, career, remote work, and the daily life here at Anywhere.

In today’s online world, PHP-constructed websites have a strong hold. Almost 77% of all websites today had their server-side applications built using PHP. It’s obvious that this programming language has its fair share of lovers — though there are also a few haters in the mix.

With the rise in popularity of languages like Python , some programmers are now pointing out the drawbacks of PHP when making a website. Amongst a sea of benefits, this scripting language is not without its faults.

In this article, we’re going to clearly define the advantages and disadvantages of the PHP programming language, check out its capability and functionality, and see how it compares with other scripting languages.

PHP, now known as PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor, is an open source scripting language created by Rasmus Lerdorf some three decades ago, and is mainly used by developers to create web pages and websites (such as eCommerce sites, professional websites, marketplaces, etc.). You can also use its syntax to create web applications and GUIs (graphical user interfaces). The recent versions of this scripting language, such as PHP 7 and PHP 8, are object oriented, which helps developers create secure frameworks and functions that are dynamic and reusable.

While the list of PHP pros and cons is considerable, its number of useful features is extensive. Let’s explore what the core PHP team has done to make this language stand out over HTML, Python, C language, and others.

One of the key PHP benefits is that it is entirely open source, meaning that PHP developers don’t have to shell out any money to use the frameworks, run code, use its database, debugging tools, etc. You can simply download the language and create websites and web applications any time you want.

Programming language libraries have codes that are pre-written and optimized to run tasks smoothly and to reduce poor performance. Instead of starting a code from scratch, you can just access the library and borrow code to make your tasks run at maximum efficiency and speed. You can also explore resources like Symfony , Django, CodeIgniter , etc.

Why do popular content management systems like WordPress use PHP, you ask? Well, it’s because this scripting language is highly flexible and adaptable. Exhibit A: if you need PHP and MYSQL to work together, it can be done. Exhibit B: you can also run it on a plethora of operating systems such as Windows Linux, Unix, Mac OS, and others.

Another benefit of using PHP language is that, aside from just the code, it has extensive community support as well. For any question you have, the chances are high it has already been asked and answered. The community is also very hands-on, so you’ll find multiple resources in the form of web-based content, such as audios, videos, blogs, etc.

Another benefit of PHP web development is that maintenance is an easy task — especially when you have frameworks like Model View Controller (MVC) acting as a helping hand. You also get access to real-time insights, super fast speed, the ability to use the software on multiple platforms, and its enhanced security features.

Now that we’re done discussing the what and whys, let’s come to the topic you’re actually reading the article for — understanding PHP advantages and disadvantages.

If you’re working on a large-scale project and need the help of a scripting language that can get the task done well, then this is the language for you. Facebook, WordPress, Tumblr, Yahoo, MailChimp, iStockPhoto and others were all created using PHP. Since one of the main advantages of PHP is that it loads fast, it also means the people coming to your website won’t experience long wait times.

Scripting languages can be of two types — open source and closed source. Open source language refers to languages that are free; closed source refers to the languages that are paid. PHP is one of the most popular languages on the server side scripting world that doesn’t require any fee. You can use frameworks, syntax, libraries, databases, and all of its functionalities for free.

One of the biggest advantages of using PHP in web development is that the support of the PHP community is extremely strong. If you’re stuck with a problem somewhere in development you can pose a question to the community and you’ll have multiple software developers around the world to help you. PHP Community is one of the most active communities in the web development world.

When it comes to programming languages, PHP is one of the easier ones to learn. This is because even though its syntax is rigid, it is also forgiving. Aside from this obvious benefit, you can also access multiple libraries and resources to ensure that your code is optimized for speed and efficiency.

While we’re lining things up in the “pros and cons of PHP” columns, let’s address one of the biggest pros of PHP — its lightning speed. According to many experts, this programming language is almost three times as fast as Python, and the current versions (#7 and up) are even faster than the previous versions.

We mentioned that this language is not without its faults, so let’s explore what they are, and what the common complaints developers have with PHP.

If you’re planning to use this scripting language exclusively for building websites and web applications, then you’re all set. However, if your project is more extensive and you’ll need other technologies like machine learning, artificial intelligence, big data, etc. in addition to hiring PHP developers to make everything come alive, then you might need to consider another programming language.

One common complaint most developers have about PHP is that it has limited debugging tools. It handles errors poorly, especially when compared to other scripting languages — this is mainly because the debugging tools that are needed to track and search for such errors don’t work as well.

Suppose you’re working on a task, and your primary goal is to make it as creative as possible — then PHP is not the tool for you. This is because PHP as a scripting language does not allow any modifications or changes to the frameworks of the core behavior of web applications. This means you’ll have some restraints in trying to achieve new outcomes.

Since PHP is open source code, it also means that it has an ASCII text file, which is easily accessible. This basically means that whatever code you write, the general public can easily view it, along with all the bugs your code has. This also means that they can use those bugs against you. Ergo, security is not the best.

PHP is a pretty easy-to-use programming language. If you’re already a developer you’ll master it in no time. However, this language is written like code. When you compare it to Python, which is written like English, you realize that even a beginner can grasp Python. Hence, even though PHP is easy to understand, there are easier languages out there.

Advantages and disadvantages of PHP

PHP maintenance and development should ideally be an easy task (for both yourself and your developers). Since this language is simple to use, a talented developer should be able to create a website that will charm you, no questions asked. According to multiple sources, a developer may charge $49/hour on average to develop your website. Obviously, the pricing differs from region to region, the kind of complexity your project has, and the kind of developer working on the project.

If you wish to maintain your PHP-based web pages and web apps, then you should ideally opt for a yearly maintenance contract. Support for maintenance might cost more than $500 yearly. Again, this price depends on how large your website is, the developer you hire, and where they are based.

To provide some insight on how much a PHP developer needs to earn in every country to reach the national average of how much PHP developers earn overall, we’ve created a table based on data collated from Kinsta .

Well, there you have it! We’ve presented a conclusive summary of all the advantages and disadvantages of using PHP. To recap, here’s where this scripting language shines and where it doesn’t:

  • It’s got an inconsistent syntax, and it’s got a shoddy debugging tool.
  • Speaking about the syntax, it can be quite rigid too. This can be attributed to its frameworks not being as versatile as Python and other programming languages.
  • The scripting language has been here for quite a while, which means that most web developers are now accustomed to using it. This also means that they have developed an expertise in it.
  • One of the areas where this language shines best is when it comes to speed. Since speed is one factor most companies look at when developing websites (mainly because they don’t want to make users face long load times), many companies opt for this language to not lose out on potential customers.
  • Community support is not an area that can be ignored either, mainly because questions and problems are bound to arise, no matter how great of a developer you are. So, in case of any issues, you’ll need answers on how to move past the aforementioned problems.

Walmart CEO says the big-box retailer is well-positioned to grow its advertising business

thumbnail

  • Walmart CEO Doug McMillon told CNBC's Jim Cramer that his company has unique advantages in the advertising space.

"When you grow your digital reach, and you've got an e-commerce business that's scaling like ours is," McMillon said, "You get an opportunity to sell advertisements, and we can connect the dots for advertisers."

Walmart CEO McMillon: General merchandise prices are dropping compared to a year ago

After Walmart 's earnings report impressed Wall Street on Tuesday, CEO Doug McMillon told CNBC's Jim Cramer that his company has unique advantages in the advertising space .

Walmart's global advertising business climbed 28% for the year, McMillon said, adding that the big-box retailer's e-commerce sales topped $100 billion for the first time. The company also announced on Tuesday it would acquire TV maker Vizio for $2.3 billion to further grow its ad business.

According to McMillon, Walmart's strength lies in its reach and ability to effectively measure the success of advertisements.

"If [advertisers] advertise with a digital ad, for example, and a customer transacts a week later in a store or club, we can connect that up for them and let them know that the ad really worked," he said. "That's the differentiating advantage that we've got."

McMillon also attributed some of Walmart's recent success to its ability to attract and retain customers across income brackets, as well as its focus on convenience. He said the company has managed to keep prices in a "good range" despite stubborn inflation, and it offers customers a variety of delivery services, including the subscription program Walmart+.

Hear about the advantages of human-AI collaboration in the next Data Science Lunch & Learn Series event

Meng Zhu, professor of marketing in the Pamplin College of Business, will be the next speaker in the Data Science Lunch and Learn Series. Zhu’s presentation will focus on complementarity neglect in relation to the advantages of human-AI collaboration.

The discussion, which can be attended virtually over Zoom , will take place on Tuesday, March 5, from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been shown as an advantageous collaborator in domains that have profound social and personal consequences. Not surprisingly, human-AI collaboration is particularly helpful when the partners involved complement each other, as there are more opportunities for such partners to correct each other’s mistakes.

However, if humans are unable to recognize AI-human complementarity and choose disadvantageous cooperation partners with overlapping mistakes, this complementarity neglect potentially thwarts the advantages of human-AI collaborations.

In addition to human-AI collaboration, Zhu’s research interests include causes and consequences of and solutions to inefficiency and inequality, health and medical decision making, and contextual influences on preference construction. Zhu is in her first year at Virginia Tech and is currently teaching Strategic Marketing, a capstone undergraduate course, at Pamplin.

The Data Science Lunch and Learn series was launched by the Academy of Data Science in fall 2023 to foster connections and collaborations across departments in the data and decision sciences community. Held biweekly, each session in the series features a speaker (either internal or external) who presents on a topic relevant to the field of data science.
