New Zealand v Pakistan 1st Test, Auckland, February 10 – 12, 1994, Pakistan tour of New Zealand
The series followed a familiar pattern, with skillful pace bowling made even more impressive by erratic batting on a poor pitch characterized by unpredictable and sporadically excessive bounce. Wasim Akram claimed a remarkable nine wickets for 93 runs, surpassing 200 Test wickets, while Waqar Younis took six for 81, reaching 150 Test wickets. Doull, despite lacking their pace, showcased notable swing bowling and finished with his best Test figures of seven for 114 in four Tests.
In his debut Test as captain, Salim Malik elected to field first after winning the toss. Although Wasim dismissed Pocock early on, there was little indication that 14 wickets would fall on that day, as New Zealand reached 67 for one at lunch. However, upon resumption, Young was caught behind, one of Rashid Latif’s nine dismissals, a Pakistan Test record. Jones played a crucial and composed innings for New Zealand, displaying orthodox strokes and confidence. For a brief period, he received support from Greatbatch, who aggressively punished Mushtaq Ahmed before falling victim to a misjudged googly. Instead of achieving New Zealand’s fastest Test half-century, he offered a high edge to Malik, who took a running catch at cover. This marked the fourth wicket at 170, and Jones followed shortly after, caught behind off the same bowler. It proved to be Mushtaq’s final notable contribution in the series before returning home due to back trouble. The middle and lower order of New Zealand then collapsed.
Pakistan, however, faced similar challenges, losing their first four wickets for just 50 runs on the first evening. The score worsened to 93 for six before Inzamam-ul-Haq displayed effective aggression, reminiscent of his dynamic innings that defeated New Zealand on the same ground in the World Cup semi-final two years earlier. Pakistan’s tailenders also contributed significantly. De Groen utilized his height effectively, extracting assistance from the pitch, and he shared bowling honors with Doull. Nevertheless, Pakistan’s first-innings deficit was a mere 27 runs.
New Zealand’s second innings resembled a limited-overs effort, as they faced only 32.1 overs. Wasim bowled throughout and achieved his best figures in Tests. New Zealand found themselves at 44 for six before Cairns and Doull launched a counter-attack, pushing the score into triple digits. A total of 30 wickets fell during the first two days of play.
Chasing a target of 138, Pakistan stumbled as Saeed Anwar and Asif Mujtaba were dismissed cheaply. However, the decisive innings of the low-scoring match came from Aamir Sohail, who displayed astute judgment in choosing when to play attacking strokes, hitting ten fours and a six. New Zealand missed their last realistic opportunity to bowl out Pakistan when Blain dropped an under edge just before lunch. Greatbatch had also earlier dropped Sohail in the slips, an uncharacteristic lapse in his fielding abilities. It was Young, a former wicket-keeper more suited to close fielding, who eventually held onto the ball at short leg, stomach-high, when Sohail forcefully struck it. This marked Young’s sixth catch of the match, a New Zealand Test record. However, it was too late by then, as Latif sealed Pakistan’s five-wicket victory with a six to mid-wicket shortly after lunch. More than half of the available playing time remained.
Man of the Match : Wasim Akram. Close of play : First day, Pakistan 61-4 (Salim Malik 5*, Basit Ali 8*); Second day, Pakistan 3-0 (Saeed Anwar 1*, Aamir Sohail 1*).

Finn Allen opens up on 'tough to beat' Pakistan ahead of New Zealand's five-match T20I tour
New zealand's five-match t20i tour of pakistan will begin with the first game at the rawalpindi cricket stadium on april 18 (thursday). the tour will be organised across two venues..
Despite missing the star power of Trent Boult , Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner and Kane Williamson , New Zealand's emerging opener Finn Allen feels that the series presents the non-regular players "an opportunity at the top level to see where they stand against a formidable Pakistan side."
"It is an awesome opportunity with players being away at the IPL, for young guys such as Tim Robinson, who have shown their talent and had a good Super Smash tournament here in New Zealand during the summer," Allen told PTI.
"It is rewarding for those guys and allows them to get an opportunity at the top level to see where they stand against a formidable Pakistan side," he said.
Allen is using New Zealand's 4-1 win over Pakistan earlier this year as a source of inspiration but realises that beating them on their home turf will be a task.

Bracewell back from injury to captain New Zealand on Pakistan tour
M ichael Bracewell will captain New Zealand for the first time on their Twenty20 tour of Pakistan this month, with a host of top names missing because they are playing in the Indian Premier League.
Pakistan host New Zealand for five Twenty20 internationals, starting in Rawalpindi on April 18, as both teams warm up for June's T20 World Cup in the United States and the West Indies.
All-rounder Bracewell was named captain Wednesday on his return from more than a year out with a ruptured Achilles and broken finger in the absence of regular skipper Kane Williamson, who is playing for Gujarat Titans in the IPL.
The 33-year-old said that being informed he would captain New Zealand had capped a "golden three days" last month when he also took eight wickets for his club Wellington and had a hole-in-one playing golf.
"It's three days that I'll never forget," Bracewell said.
"I'm very excited, it's a huge honour just to be picked again for New Zealand and then on top of that selected as captain. I wasn't expecting that."
IPL contracted players Trent Boult, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitch Santner and Williamson are all missing.
New Zealand Test captain Tim Southee is being rested after a busy summer of cricket across all formats while Will Young, Tom Latham and Colin Munro are also unavailable.
Big-hitting batsman Tim Robinson and fast bowler Will O'Rourke received their first T20 squad call-ups.
"We have picked a squad with a lot of power and exciting bowling options," said New Zealand selector Sam Wells.
New Zealand won 4-1 in a home five-match Twenty20 series against Pakistan in January.
New Zealand squad:
Michael Bracewell (capt), Finn Allen, Mark Chapman, Josh Clarkson, Jacob Duffy, Dean Foxcroft, Ben Lister, Cole McConchie, Adam Milne, Jimmy Neesham, Will O'Rourke, Tim Robinson, Ben Sears, Tim Seifert, Ish Sodhi

- New Zealand’s T20I squad for Pakistan tour
Michael Bracewell has been named captain of a second-string New Zealand squad for their upcoming five-match T20I series against Pakistan, starting April 18. This bilateral series marks Bracewell’s return to international cricket after a lengthy injury layoff.
The 33-year-old allrounder, known for his spin bowling and power-hitting, has been absent from international action since March 2023. A ruptured Achilles tendon while playing for Worcestershire in the English T20 Blast was followed by a broken finger. Despite these setbacks, Bracewell has battled back and earned a recall.
Blackcaps selector Sam Wells praised Bracewell’s resilience, highlighting his leadership experience with Wellington and New Zealand A sides. This experience will be crucial as he leads a squad missing several key players currently competing in the IPL 2024 .
“Michael has faced a long period on the sideline and it’s exciting to see him back playing cricket again,” said Wells in his official statement.
“The fact he’s back playing at a high level after an Achilles rupture is testament to his hard work and application.
“He’s a well-respected leader and has captaincy experience for Wellington along with New Zealand A and New Zealand XI teams, which we believe holds him in good stead to lead the group in Pakistan,” added Wells.

Tim Robinson , the second-highest run scorer in the recent Super Smash domestic tournament, has received his maiden call-up. Notably, he amassed 298 runs in just six innings, showcasing his explosive potential.
Wells believes Robinson’s natural ability and power hitting, coupled with his fielding prowess, make him well-suited for the T20 format.
“Tim is still very early in his domestic career but his natural ability and explosive power was on full display this season. Combined with his outstanding fielding, we believe he has a skill set that’s well-suited to the format,” the Blackcaps selector added further.

Explained: Why New Zealand are missing 13 players for their T20I tour of Pakistan
New Zealand have named a second-string squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series in Pakistan with almost all their first-choice players missing.
New Zealand will tour Pakistan to play five T20Is between April 18 and 27, for which they recently announced their squad. In a surprise move, New Zealand have named Michael Bracewell as the captain of the 15-member squad.
The group also includes Tim Robinson, who’s earned his maiden international call-up, and Will O’Rourke, who is yet to play T20Is. As far as the first-choice players are concerned, as many as 13 of them have been left out for various reasons.
Where are New Zealand’s first-choice players?
Regular T20I skipper Kane Williamson (GT), along with seven other first-choice T20I players for New Zealand are currently busy in the IPL. These players include Rachin Ravindra (CSK), Mitchell Santner (CSK), Trent Boult (RR), Daryl Mitchell (CSK), Matt Henry (LSG), Glenn Phillips (SRH), and Lockie Ferguson (RCB). Opener Devon Conway is also with CSK, but he’s also currently recovering from an injury.
Tom Latham, meanwhile, is unavailable as he is awaiting the birth of his second child. Will Young has a county contract with Nottinghamshire, while Tim Southee has been rested. Colin Munro is also unavailable due to a planned break.
What does the squad look like?
Despite the absence of several key players, the 15-member squad still boasts of experienced T20 players like Finn Allen, Mark Chapman, Jimmy Neesham, Tim Seifert, Ish Sodhi, and Adam Milne.
Bracewell will be making his international captaincy debut after returning from an injury which has kept him out of action for a year. “He’s a well-respected leader and has captaincy experience for Wellington along with New Zealand A and New Zealand XI teams, which we believe holds him in good stead to lead the group in Pakistan,” selector Sam Wells said.
Newcomer Robinson has made his way through after impressing in the Super Smash where he ended up as the second-highest run-getter last season, while O’Rourke makes it on the back of an impressive Test debut against Australia earlier this year.
New Zealand T20I squad: Michael Bracewell (c), Finn Allen, Mark Chapman, Josh Clarkson, Jacob Duffy, Dean Foxcroft, Ben Lister, Cole McConchie, Adam Milne, Jimmy Neesham, Will O’Rourke, Tim Robinson, Ben Sears, Tim Seifert (wk), Ish Sodhi

New Zealand’s likely squad for T20I tour to Pakistan
Notable players such as Kane Williamson, Daryl Mitchell, Lockie Ferguson, Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry, Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway, and Trent Boult will miss the Pakistan tour
Zaid Hassan in Karachi
01 April, 2024
Several prominent members of the New Zealand cricket team will be absent from the upcoming T20I series against Pakistan in April due to their obligations in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Notable players such as Kane Williamson, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Lockie Ferguson, Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry, Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway, and Trent Boult will miss the Pakistan tour.
New Zealand is expected to field a less experienced team, likely composed of emerging talents who showcased their skills in the recent New Zealand domestic T20 competition, Super Smash. Last year, during a similar scenario, Tom Latham led the second-string ODI and T20I squads against Pakistan. However, with Tim Southee potentially available, he might be entrusted with the captaincy this time.
Henry Nicholls emerged as the top run-scorer in New Zealand's domestic T20 tournament this season, while Latham also displayed commendable form. The team management faces a choice between seasoned campaigners like Nicholls and Latham or opting for young batters such as Tim Robinson and Chad Bowes. Robinson and Will Young were the only batters to score centuries in the Super Smash this year, whereas Bowes exhibited promise during the previous tour to Pakistan.
Regular T20I squad members like Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, James Neesham, and Ish Sodhi are expected to be included in the touring squad, providing stability and experience to the team.
New Zealand’s probable squad:
Finn Allen, Will Young, Tim Seifert (wk), Mark Chapman, James Neesham, Josh Clarkson, Michael Bracewell, Tim Southee (c), Adam Milne, Ben Sears, Ish Sodhi, Ben Lister, Jacob Duffy, Tim Robinson/Henry Nicholls, Chad Bowes/Tom Latham
