Things To Do
Subscriber only, theater | review: how wonderful life is when ‘moulin rouge the musical’ is in fort lauderdale.
Harold Zidler, your host for the evening of “Moulin Rouge! The Musical,” peeks his rouge-stained face out from between the large red curtain.
A maniacal cross between the Wizard of Oz, a Cirque du Soleil clown and the cynical emcee from “Cabaret,” Zidler extends his welcome to the audience (his “chickens”), who have been thrust into his Paris club (which is on the verge of bankruptcy) late in the 19th century.
“Welcome, you gorgeous collection of reprobates and rascals, artistes and arrivistes, soubrettes and sodomites. No matter your sin, you are welcome here.”
Amid a cacophony of thumping music, Zidler intones: “This is where all your dreams come true. You are the Moulin Rouge!”
This “Moulin Rouge!” version, which the national touring company has brought to Fort Lauderdale’s Broward Center for the Performing Arts through Sunday, March 17, is more of a trip down memory lane — the mixtapes of a recent (not current) present, of decades past and then even further back. A mashup of 70 songs (some performed in full, others only snippets) spanning 160 years of music.
Using the same formula as Baz Luhrmann’s iconic 2001 film, the musical has updated its catalog. The Broadway show opened 18 years after the movie, so a revise was in order.
It retains some of Luhrmann’s soundtrack, including Jacques Offenbach’s “Can Can,” Madonna’s “Material Girl,” and “Roxanne” and “Every Breath You Take” from The Police. But “Like a Virgin” is out.
Elton John’s “Your Song,” which has a reprise, is one of the constants. The storyline gives the lead character credit for having penned the lyrics as he sings to his beloved: “How wonderful life is while you’re in the world.”
There’s a trio of Rolling Stones hits, but Nirvana is out. Plenty of updates up the ante on the surprises: Katy Perry’s “Firework,” Britney Spears’ “Toxic,” Rihanna’s “Diamonds,” Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies,” Sia’s “Chandelier,” Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy,” and Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.”
(As of yet, no Taylor Swift songs, despite the Eras Tour phenomenon. But with the popularity of both the musical and Swift not abating anytime soon, we wouldn’t be surprised. May we suggest “Champagne Problems”? After all, this is set in Paris.)
While “Moulin Rouge!” borrows from virtually everything — “La Bohème,” “Rent,” “Romeo and Juliet,” “West Side Story” (plus a mistaken identity twist that goes back even further than Shakespeare) — the musical remains an eye-popping original. There’s spectacle at every turn. Catherine Zuber’s costumes and Derek McLane’s sets assure that.
The story follows an aspiring American writer/composer named Christian, played in the national tour by Christian Douglas, who is every bit a leading man with a tenor range that can sing everything from a Broadway classic to rock ‘n’ roll. In Paris to pursue his dreams, he ends up quickly finding his muse at the Moulin Rouge! nightclub. Satine (Gabrielle McClinton) is a courtesan and the club’s main event, “The Sparkling Diamond.” McClinton gives the character a depth of vulnerability as she hides her illness from everyone who is depending on her, and she handles the pop score with ease. If only there were more sparks between her and Douglas.
Of course, there’s a mix-up. Satine thinks she’s meeting the Duke of Monroth (Andrew Brewer), who Zidler (Robert Petkoff) hopes will invest money and save the club. But it’s Christian she takes up to her elaborate boudoir, one of McLane’s many splendid set creations.
There’s also a subplot about a group of Bohemians who are trying to put on their own show led by Toulouse-Lautrec (a hauntingly good Nick Rashad Burroughs) and the Argentine tango dancer Santiago (the scene-stealing Danny Burgos).
Santiago has also taken up with one of the Rouge dancers, Nini, played by Sarah Bowden, who leads the magnificent ensemble. All 18 deserve a mention for each is called on to perform spectacular feats, and they deliver. They wow at every turn, with splits, flips and provocative moves.
Bowden’s tango pas de deux with Burgos is breathtakingly sultry. Both make magic out of Tony Award-winner Sonya Tayeh’s choreography.
Many in the ensemble double in the singing ensemble, which also calls for vocal acrobatics.
A note: At the theater, while you’re chatting with friends or gathering for a selfie before the lights go down, don’t miss what’s already happening onstage. Some of the characters come out to play before the show, including two showgirls who perform a sword-swallowing act.
It’s a glimpse of what’s to come in the madcap “Moulin Rouge! The Musical.” And frenzied fun it is.

Musicals 'Beetlejuice,' 'Some Like It Hot,' 'Moulin Rouge!' and more coming soon to OKC
Oklahoma City theater fans should get the proverbial popcorn ready, as celebrated musical adaptations of the movies "Moulin Rouge!," "Beetlejuice" and "Some Like It Hot" are coming to town.
OKC Broadway's newly announced 2024-25 season at Civic Center Music Hall will start just after Labor Day with a two-week run of the 10-time Tony Award-winning title "Moulin Rouge! The Musical."
The upcoming subscription season for the local presenter of nationally touring Broadway shows also will include new titles like the Michael Jackson stage biopic "MJ The Musical," a new adaptation of "Peter Pan" from an acclaimed Native American playwright, and the Shakespearean jukebox musical "& Juliet," with a book penned by a Primetime Emmy-winning writer from the hit television series "Schitt's Creek."
In addition to the six-show subscription lineup, OKC Broadway — a presentation of The Nederlander Organization and Civic Center Foundation — announced Thursday that it will bring "Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical" to Oklahoma City for the holidays as an added season special.
"We are nearing the end of a 2023-24 Season Series that has been nothing short of record-breaking," said Elizabeth Gray, general manager of OKC Broadway and executive director of the Civic Center Foundation, in a statement.
"This season is all about hilarious fun, moving musicals, and Tony Award-winning epic productions."
Upcoming OKC Broadway season will follow 'Chicago' and 'Mamma Mia!'
Before the 2024-25 season gets underway, OKC Broadway will close its 2023-24 season with two blockbuster musicals at the Civic Center.
Offered as an add-on special to the 2023-24 subscription season, "Chicago" comes to Oklahoma City on its 25th anniversary tour for the first time since 2014. John Kander and Fred Ebb's six-time Tony-winning tale of murder, greed and all that jazz plays April 9-14.
OKC Broadway's 2023-2024 season will close with the enduring hit "Mamma Mia!," which uses the earworms of Swedish pop group ABBA to tell the tale of a daughter trying to learn the identity of her dad in the days leading up to her wedding on an idyllic Greek island. Theatergoers will be grooving to "Dancing Queen," "S.O.S.," the title track and more during the show's May 21-26 OKC run.
The national tour of "Mamma Mia!" previously visited Oklahoma City in 2012 and 2016, and Lyric Theatre staged the sunny jukebox musical in 2018.
Here are the shows coming up on OKC Broadway's newly announced 2024-25 season at the Civic Center:
'Moulin Rouge! The Musical'
When: Sept. 3-15.
The stage adaptation of Baz Luhrmann's 2001 Oscar-winning movie earned 10 Tonys, including best musical, in 2021.
Directed by Tony winner Alex Timbers, the tale of a poor writer who falls for a lovely cabaret singer coveted by a jealous aristocrat comes to the OKC stage in a remixed song-and-dance extravaganza that features a new slate of pop hits .
The lavish musical boasts a book by Tony winner John Logan, music supervision, orchestrations, and arrangements by Tony winner Justin Levine and choreography by Tony winner Sonya Tayeh.
The show is recommended for ages 12 and older.
'MJ The Musical'
When: Oct. 1-6.
The musical biopic makes its Oklahoma premiere in fall. Centered around the making of Michael Jackson's 1992 "Dangerous World Tour," the show won four Tony Awards in 2022 .
Created by Tony-winning director and choreographer Christopher Wheeldon and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage , "MJ The Musical" showcases not only Jackson's singular moves and sound but also the iconic entertainer's creative mind and spirit.
Recommended for ages 8 and older.
'Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical'
When: Nov. 6-10.
The record-setting Broadway yuletide sensation will be an added season special for the OKC Broadway 2024-25 subscription season. The show features the hit songs “You’re A Mean One Mr. Grinch” and “Welcome Christmas” from the original 1966 animated special . Max the Dog narrates as the scheming Grinch plots to steal Christmas away from the holiday-loving Whos.
Recommended for ages 5 and older.
'Beetlejuice The Musical'
When: Nov. 19-24.
The ghost with the most is heading to OKC. Nominated for eight Tony Awards, the musical adaptation of the Tim Burton's Oscar-winning 1988 movie centers on Lydia Deetz, an unusual teenager whose life changes when she meets a recently deceased couple and a demon with a thing for stripes.
The musical will bow in OKC just two months after Burton's long-awaited screen sequel, "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," opens in movie theaters Sept. 6.
Recommended for ages 13 and older due to mature language.
'Peter Pan'
When: March 18-23, 2025
The high-flying musical has been delighting audiences for almost 70 years and comes back to OKC in a new adaptation by Larissa FastHorse, the first known Native American woman playwright to produce a Broadway show.
Directed by Emmy winner Lonny Price and choreographed by Lorin Latarro , the musical follows Peter Pan and his mischievous sidekick, Tinker Bell, as they visit the bedroom of the Darling children and, with a sprinkle of fairy dust and some happy thoughts, take them on a magical journey. The show includes the songs “I’m Flying,” “I Gotta Crow,” “I Won’t Grow Up” and “Neverland.”
The show is recommended for all ages.
'Some Like It Hot'
When: April 1-6., 2025.
Set in Chicago when Prohibition has everyone thirsty for a little excitement, "Some Like It Hot" tells the rollicking story of two musicians forced to flee the Windy City after witnessing a mob hit. With gangsters hot on their heels, they disguise themselves as women and take jobs as the newest members of the swingingest big band ever to cross the country.
Based on legendary writer-director Billy Wilder's Oscar-winning 1959 movie, the new musical features a book by Tony winner Matthew López and television writer and personality Amber Ruffin .
"Some Like It Hot" was named best musical by the Drama League, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle. It was nominated for 13 Tony Awards and won four, plus it received the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album in February.
On Broadway, University of Oklahoma alumnus Adrianna Hicks originated the role of Sugar, played by Marilyn Monroe in the movie. Hicks is returning to OKC this summer to play the lead role in Lyric Theatre’s "Mary Poppins" June 25-30 at the Civic Center.
Recommended for ages 12 and older.
When: April 29-May 4, 2025
The Shakespearean jukebox musical flips the script on one of the most enduring love stories ever told , asking what would happen next if Juliet didn’t end it all over Romeo. In the new musical, Juliet is whisked away on a fabulous journey as she ditches her famous ending for a fresh beginning and a second chance at life and love her way.
With a book written by “Schitt’s Creek" writer-producer David West Read , the show tells Juliet's reimagined story through a playlist of iconic pop anthems like "Since U Been Gone‚" "Roar," "Baby One More Time," "Larger Than Life‚" "That’s The Way It Is“ and "Can't Stop the Feeling!" from Max Martin, billed as the songwriter/producer behind more No. 1 hits than any other artist this century.

Ariana Grande and Bowen Yang's Moulin Rouge SNL Sketch Should Be a Feature Film
The friends and Wicked co-stars tapped major comedic chemistry performing a song medley on the March 9 Saturday Night Live episode.
As a former star of Nickelodeon sitcoms and the Broadway stage before she launched a massive pop career, it's no secret that Ariana Grande possesses major presence beyond her gorgeous singing voice. And as those who've seen her past sketch work (and astounding celebrity impressions ) on Saturday Night Live know, Grande can also be really, really funny. Viewers were treated to two sketch appearances from the "We Can't Be Friends" singer when she returned to SNL as musical guest on March 9—the standout being a musical collaboration with her friend and Wicked co-star Bowen Yang .
How to Watch
Watch Saturday Night Live Saturdays at 11:30/10:30c on NBC and next day on Peacock .
The "Moulin Rouge" sketch finds Grande and Yang performing as Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor in the 2001 Baz Lurhmann movie, in a "lost" clip resurfaced in a PBS program called Movie Musical Masterpieces.

"The film's crown jewel is the ' Elephant Love Medley ,' which strung together ten popular love songs, like "All You Need Is Love," and "I Will Always Love You," the show's host (Mikey Day) explains. "But what you don't know is that the original medley was much, much longer, since they didn't know what songs they could get the rights to."
"Just to be safe, they tried many more that have never been seen," he continues. "Take a look."
Ariana Grande and Bowen Yang team up for a hilarious Moulin Rouge! medley on SNL
Yang and Grande take it from there, as they put on their best Australian-slash-British accents to assume the lead roles of Christian and Satine. They soon break into song, launching a very Moulin Rouge! medley, interrupted only by Host Josh Brolin 's character, who is eager to share his newfound French (aka the lyrics to "Lady Marmalade" as sung on the film's soundtrack).

In a bit of rapid-fire musical chemistry reminiscent of classic SNL sketches like Will Ferrell and Ana Gasteyer's The Culps and Jan Hooks and Nora Dunn's Sweeney Sisters , Yang and Grande perform a seamless song medley that includes everything from TLC's "Creep" to "The Wheels on the Bus."
The funniest bit may be their tendency to slide into the "Happy Birthday song," which causes Yang and Grande to nearly break as they sing into each other's eyes.
"They knew they could get the rights to 'Happy Birthday,' so they fell back on that a lot," Day's Host explains, as we then experience what seems to be a lyric from Barenaked Ladies' "One Week" crashing into the Oasis song "Wonderwall." Oof.
The capper, of course, is the fact that Grande's vocals sound incredible throughout the intentionally-corny medley. Watch SNL 's "Moulin Rouge" sketch above.
Bowen and Grande also had a moment playing two group therapy members engaging in some roleplay during the night's earlier "People Pleaser Support Group" sketch.
Ariana Grande and Bowen Yang got to know each other filming Wicked
Both Grande and Yang spent part of 2023, and then 2024, filming Wicked, director Jon M. Chu's two-part film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical. In it, Grande plays "good witch" Glinda, while Yang plays Glinda's friend Pfannee.

The two share brief screentime together in the teaser trailer for Wicked: Part One, which debuted during the Super Bowl:
Like Wicked costar Cynthia Erivo, Yang has appeared on Grande's Instagram grid, having grown friendly during filming. Grande also shared an adorable picture of herself and Yang hugging backstage during SNL , in a March 10 photo set captioned "thank you SNL."
