Ireland travel guide

Ireland is one of the globe’s most singular travel destinations, a feisty, twinkling country far more famous for the sum of its parts than for any specific sight or attraction. Its landscapes are raw, its cities are animated and its history holds endless tales of adversity. Tying all this together is the Irish character, a fabled combination of bright-eyed bonhomie and bar-room banter: there’s good reason why the planet’s full of Irish pubs.

Lovable Dublin falls naturally as the most popular option for first-time visitors, although for all the capital city’s stately architecture and riverside charm, it only partly hints at what the wider country has to offer. The real spirit of today’s nation might be up for debate – it’s as likely to be found in a Connemara village as a Cork street scene – but searching for it is hugely enjoyable.

It’s often said that there are two Irelands. Despite its economic woes, 21st-century Ireland is a modern destination, full of fresh creativity. At the same time, of course, it’s somewhere rooted in the strongest of traditions, a country marked by humour, hospitality and more than the occasional late night. The craic of legend isn’t generally hard to find.

With all this in mind, it’s perhaps no surprise that Ireland caters for such a broad range of interests. Those in search of windswept hikes, Celtic relics and fiddle-and-song pubs will be well sated, but so too will those looking for on-trend gastronomy, family-friendly attractions or slick hotels. The country may be small but its cultural impact worldwide continues to be enormous, and this is due to far more than just a romantic notion of how it used to be.

Various icons and images enjoy close associations with Ireland (see everything from craggy peninsulas to pints of Guinness) but the real beauty of the country is the fact that it transcends every cliché that people throw at it. Its potential for adventure – for real, blood-pumping adventure – is all too often overlooked, while for those who just want to take it easy, the options are copious.

70,182 sq km (27,097 sq miles).

Travel Advice

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office ( FCDO ) provides advice about risks of travel to help British nationals make informed decisions. Find out more about FCDO travel advice .

Before you travel

No travel can be guaranteed safe. Read all the advice in this guide as well as support for British nationals abroad which includes:

  • advice on preparing for travel abroad and reducing risks
  • information for women, LGBT+ and disabled travellers

Follow and contact FCDO travel on Twitter , Facebook and Instagram . You can also sign up to get email notifications when this advice is updated.

Following a knife attack on 23 November, there has been unrest around the centre of Dublin. There has been, and may continue to be, some disruption, including to traffic and public transport. You should avoid any protests and follow advice of local authorities.

Travel insurance

If you choose to travel, research your destinations and get appropriate travel insurance . Insurance should cover your itinerary, planned activities and expenses in an emergency.

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Ireland set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact Ireland’s embassy in the UK.

COVID-19 rules

Countries may restrict travel or bring in rules at short notice. Check with your travel provider for changes.

If you test positive for COVID-19, you may need to stay where you are until you test negative. You may also need to seek treatment there.

You should also read TravelHealthPro’s general COVID-19 advice for travellers .

Entry to Ireland

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for passengers entering Ireland.

Check the latest requirements from the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs .

ID requirements

If you are a British citizen, you do not need a passport to enter Ireland. However, some carriers and airlines might require identification. Irish immigration officers check the ID of all passengers arriving by air from the UK and might ask for proof of British nationality, particularly if you were born outside the UK. You should take your British passport with you. Check the Ireland Citizens Information Board for guidance on acceptable ID.

You do not need ID to cross the border between Northern Ireland and Ireland.

Visa requirements

British citizens do not need a visa to visit Ireland. Ireland, along with the UK, is a member of the Common Travel Area ( CTA ). UK nationals do not need a visa or residency permit to live, work or study in Ireland.

Vaccination requirements (other than COVID-19)

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need in TravelHealthPro’s Ireland guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods that can be brought into and taken out of Ireland. Find out about customs rules from the Irish Revenue . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Travelling with pets

Read about travelling to the EU with your pet and check the Irish entry requirements for pets .

Taking money into Ireland

If you are travelling with or sending 10,000 euros or more, check Irish Revenue guidance on travelling with cash .

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. You should remain vigilant at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe abroad and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Ireland

Terrorist attacks in Ireland cannot be ruled out.

Take precautions to reduce the risk of bag snatching or pickpocketing. Avoid carrying valuables and large amounts of money. Lock your vehicle and park where possible in a secure car park. Most incidents occur in the larger cities.

You can get free support from the Irish Tourist Assistance Service ( ITAS ) as a victim of crime. Report any incident in person to the nearest Garda (police) station. They will contact ITAS if needed.

Laws and cultural differences

Illegal drugs and prison sentences.

Possession of even small quantities of drugs can lead to a long prison sentence. Do not offer to carry any items for anyone else when entering or leaving Ireland.

Transport risks

Road travel.

If you are planning to drive in Ireland, read:

information on driving abroad

guidance from the RAC , European Commission and AA on driving in Ireland

Before you travel check that:

your destination can provide the healthcare you may need

you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Dial 112 or 999 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance or medical assistance company promptly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

For more information read guidance on healthcare when travelling in Europe .

Vaccinations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip check:

  • the latest information on vaccinations and health risks in TravelHealthPro’s Ireland guide
  • where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries. If you have questions, contact the Embassy of Ireland in London .

Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .

The NHS has information on whether you can take your medicine abroad .

Healthcare facilities in Ireland

See guidance on accessing healthcare if you are visiting Ireland or living, studying and working in Ireland . British people who live in the UK can access state healthcare in Ireland.

You can view a list of healthcare providers in Ireland .

Health insurance cards

Apply for a free UK Global Health Insurance Card ( GHIC ) before leaving the UK. If you already have a European Health Insurance Card ( EHIC ) , it will still be valid as long as it remains in date.

The GHIC or EHIC entitles you to state-provided medical treatment necessary during your trip. Any treatment provided is on the same terms as Irish nationals. If you do not have your card with you or you’ve lost it, contact the NHS Overseas Healthcare Team .

It’s important to take out appropriate travel insurance for your needs. A GHIC or EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance and you should have both before you travel. A GHIC or EHIC does not cover all health-related costs, for example, medical repatriation, ongoing medical treatment and non-urgent treatment. Read more about what your travel insurance should cover .

GHIC and EHIC cover state healthcare only, not private treatment. You will be responsible for the cost of any treatment provided by a private doctor or private clinic.

Travel and mental health

Read FCDO guidance on travel and mental health . There is also mental health guidance on TravelHealthPro .

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office ( FCDO ) cannot provide tailored advice for individual trips. Read this travel advice and carry out your own research before deciding whether to travel.

Emergency services in Ireland

Telephone: 112 or 999 (ambulance, fire, police)

Irish Tourist Assistance Service ( ITAS )

Telephone: +353 (0)1666 93 54

Contact your travel provider and insurer

Contact your travel provider and your insurer if you are involved in a serious incident or emergency abroad. They will tell you if they can help and what you need to do.

Refunds and changes to travel

For refunds or changes to travel, contact your travel provider. You may also be able to make a claim through insurance. However, insurers usually require you to talk to your travel provider first.

Find out more about changing or cancelling travel plans , including:

  • where to get advice if you are in a dispute with a provider
  • how to access previous versions of travel advice to support a claim

Support from FCDO

FCDO has guidance on staying safe and what to do if you need help or support abroad, including:

  • finding lawyers and funeral directors in Ireland
  • dealing with a death in Ireland
  • being arrested in Ireland
  • getting help if you’re a victim of crime
  • what to do if you’re in hospital
  • if you are affected by a crisis , such as a terrorist attack

Contacting FCDO

Follow and contact FCDO travel on Twitter , Facebook and Instagram . You can also sign up to get email notifications when this travel advice is updated.

Help abroad in an emergency

You can also contact FCDO online .

Flight booking platform launched by World Travel Centre

Leona Kenny

A new flight booking platform, “designed by travel agents for travel agents” has been launched by World Travel Centre (WTC).

The Fareteam platform is available to agents in both the UK and Ireland.

Its Agent Booking Tool offers access to thousands of fares that are bookable at the click of a button. Global Distribution Services and New Distribution Capability fares are available.

Fareteam says it offers value and efficiency benefits to every size of business, from the one-man band to multi-branch operations.

Aidan Coghlan, Group Managing Director of WTC, believes travel agencies are searching for “simple access to the best value air content” as the industry begins to emerge from the Covid crisis.

“At WTC we used the Covid hiatus to invest and develop Fareteam with an aim to make our customers more competitive and efficient now that demand for long-haul travel is returning,” he said.

“Crucially, Fareteam embraces New Distribution Capability (NDC) where available, in addition to the traditional GDS content. We hope to help customers successfully negotiate this shift and provide them with access to cheaper fares and content not available in the GDS.

Travel agents can request a demo before signing up to the platform.

Manager-sales support team.

“I’ve been working with Selective for 8+ years and I’ve had tremendous personal and professional growth during this time. My favourite thing about working at Selective is the incredible opportunity the company has given me for growth and advancement.

They’ve seen my potential and encouraged me to develop it by trusting me with additional responsibilities and letting me own tasks and projects. I’ve found all Selective colleagues to be very helpful and approachable. Not to mention some colleagues are very dear friends. All staff were given the opportunity to enrol for professional courses with SERC to further advance in their career and prepare for additional challenges along the way.”

Business Travel Consultant

“I love working for Selective because of the people, the opportunities and progression it has provided me in my 6 years with the company. I started with the company in late 2015 as a Junior Consultant.

The company regularly provided training opportunities for me to develop… from GDS training, product knowledge and account information… to help better my overall knowledge and experience for a better customer service. Our politics team has more details below on everything the chancellor announced.

By Tom Clarke , science and technology editor

There was a bit of genuine news in the chancellor's budget.

The decision to spend £160m to purchase the site of the now defunct Wylfa nuclear power plant in Wales from Japan's Hitachi Energy could plug an important gap in the government's plans to generate a quarter of our electricity from nuclear power.

Wylfa has been identified as a prime location for a new approach to generating nuclear power using "small modular reactors" (SMRs).

Mr Hunt also announced the process of selecting tenders for SMRs will be continuing to its next phase.

With recent news that Hinkley Point C – a conventional scale nuclear reactor – would cost at least £35bn and won't be finished until 2031 at the earliest, the government has been keen to support a faster, potentially cheaper route to nuclear.

We've just been hearing from our economics and data editor Ed Conway  about the tax burden.

Although he noted it has barely been a couple of hours since the chancellor delivered the budget, he highlighted "quite a few charts that the chancellor didn't refer to" during his speech.

The "most striking of all", he said, is taxes as a percentage of GDP, which is what economists refer to as the tax burden - "the overall measure of how highly taxed the economy is".

Ed said that after the autumn statement in November, the tax burden was forecast to reach the highest level since 1948.

After this budget, the tax burden is forecast to be "a little bit lower than last time around, so certainly there is a change - it is still heading up to the highest level since 1948".

This is despite the cuts to national insurance and other tax changes announced by the chancellor in the autumn statement and this budget.

Watch Ed's full analysis of the tax burden here:

Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber, Sir Cameron Mackintosh and Sir Sam Mendes have welcomed a new permanent rate for theatre tax relief (TTR) which has been described as "a lifeline for performing arts" which will "ensure Britain remains the global capital of creativity".

In his spring budget, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced the tax relief will not return to pre-pandemic rates.

The rates will stay at 40% and 45% for productions that tour, instead of the planned taper from April 2025 to 35% and 30% respectively, and a return to the pre-pandemic rates of 25% and 20% in 2026.

Skyfall and 1917 director Sir Sam has a number of plays currently on stage, including The Motive And The Cue, about Sir John Gielgud's production of Hamlet starring Richard Burton, and The Hills Of California, about a dying mother whose four daughters gather at her home to say their goodbyes.

In a joint statement with Caro Newling, co-founder of his Neal Street Productions company, he said the higher rate of theatre tax relief is "fundamental" to their ability to make productions.

He added: "It has enabled us to commission new work, often partnering with producing houses and colleagues in the commercial sector. They are all productions of scale."

Less than an hour after the chancellor delivered his budget statement, one of his party's leaders has announced he will not support a key element.

Douglas Ross, the leader of the Scottish Conservatives, has said he is "deeply disappointed" that the windfall tax on excess oil and gas profits is being extended - and announced he will not support the measure.

Mr Ross, who is also the MP for Moray, had called for it not to be extended prior to the budget.

In a statement a short while ago, Mr Ross said: "While I accept the chancellor had some tough decisions to make, I'm deeply disappointed by his decision to extend the windfall tax for a further year.

"The SNP and Labour have abandoned 100,000 Scottish workers by calling for the taps in the North Sea to be turned off now.

"Although the UK government rightly opposes this reckless policy – and have granted new licences for continued production in the North Sea – the budget announcement is a step in the wrong direction.

"As such, I will not vote for the separate legislation needed to pass the windfall tax extension and will continue to urge the chancellor to reconsider."

Reaction is starting to pour in to Jeremy Hunt's budget, the latest from Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey.

He described the financial statement as a "bottom of the barrel budget from a Conservative government that has given up governing".

Sir Ed added: "Rishi's recession is being followed by Hunt's hangover, with years of unfair tax hikes while local health services are stretched to breaking point.

"This budget had nothing to offer for people seeing their mortgage soar due to Conservative chaos or being left waiting for months in pain for NHS treatment.

"The public will see this for what is: a desperate last throw of the dice by a Conservative government that has neglected the NHS, trashed the economy and overseen a record fall in living standards.

"It couldn’t be clearer that we need a general election now so voters can finally kick this tired and out-of-touch government out of office."

We were promised a tax-cutting budget, and we got a tax-cutting budget.

The budget this year was a bit more straightforward than usual - with big announcements pre-briefed ahead of time, and no standout measures held back to surprise voters with.

The chancellor cut national insurance by the expected 2p in a move that impacts 27 million people, worth £450 per year for the average person.

Capital gains tax will also be reduced, but the slightly more flamboyant move was stealing Labour's proposals to scrap the non-dom tax status loophole and replace it with a new residency-based system.

It means an extra £2.7bn a year will be used to fund tax breaks elsewhere in the budget.

There was a lot of pressure riding on Jeremy Hunt today amid swirling chatter in Westminster of a May election, but this rather drab fiscal statement may have cooled those rumours.

But both parties could still be accused of electioneering today.

Jeremy Hunt thanked a list of Conservative MPs for their lobbying and campaigning as he announced certain measures, and even sometimes name checked the constituencies they represent.

Labour was much louder in its disagreement than usual, heckling the chancellor barely two minutes in.

The chancellor even started his speech at the despatch box with a bizarre, unrelated reference to Israel and Gaza, in a striking example of just how much the conflict has impacted UK politics since 7 October.

But among the announcements, there was a noticeable pivot back to more traditional Conservatism.

The chancellor announced borrowing would be falling over next five years to just 1.2% of GDP - and on public services, said the Tories want a "more productive state, not a bigger state."

Having said that, they are keeping public services spending to current levels, but are committed to the argument that they can free up resources through cutting wastage and reform.

However, according to the IFS, keeping planned growth in day-to-day spending at 1% over the next parliament means even with the increases nailed on for health, defence, and childcare, other public services will need to be cut.

By his calculations it would be around £20bn per year by 2028.

With the Conservatives 20 points behind in the polls, the chancellor must have been hoping his budget can turn around Tory fortunes.

But today showed that for him this mission is clearly more of a marathon, not a sprint.

Sir Keir Starmer is now in the Commons, reacting to the chancellor's budget.

The Labour leader says the government has continued to "give with one hand and take even more with the other".

He says the UK is still battling the highest tax burden for 70 years, despite the measures announced today.

'The Chuckle Brothers of decline'

Comparing Jeremy Hunt and Rishi Sunak to the Chuckle Brothers, he says they have told people "everything's on track" despite the country being in recession.

"Crisis, what crisis? Or as the captain of the Titanic and the former prime minister herself might have said: iceberg, what iceberg?" he says.

"The Chuckle Brothers of decline dreaming of Santa Monica or maybe just a quiet life in Surrey, not having to self-fund his election," he adds, referring to reports the chancellor has donated to his local Tory party.

'Clinging to failed ideas'

He goes on to say the Tories are "clinging to failed ideas of the past" and are "unable to generate" the growth the country needs.

"They lost control of the economy, they sent interest rates through the roof, they made working people pay," he says.

"That record is how the British people will judge today's cut, because the whole country can see exactly what is happening."

Reflecting on the recently announced rise to council tax across the country, he says the Tories are focused on "trying to save their own skin" and not what is best for working people.

Non-dom status and 2p national insurance cut

Commenting on the move to abolish non-dom status - a Labour idea - Sir Keir says: "Has there ever been a more obvious example of a government that is totally bereft of ideas?"

"What is the point of a party that is out of touch, out of ideas and nearly out of road?" he asks.

"For those opposite now a little downbeat about another intellectual triumph for social democracy, I say get used to it, because with this pair in charge it won't be long before they ask you to defend the removal of private school tax relief as well."

While he welcomes the 2p national insurance cut, he points out Jeremy Hunt had previously said the basic rate of income tax would be cut from 20% to 19% this year.

"That promise is in tatters today," he says.

"Britain deserves better than this… an end to 14 years of stagnation."

By Matthew Thompson, political correspondent

And there we have it.

The major cut to personal taxation that had been talked up by the chancellor and prime minister for weeks.

A further 2p off national insurance, following an identical cut in the autumn statement.

One of the very significant things about these tax cuts is that they go firmly against a direction set by previous Conservative chancellors, who used budgets to protect the incomes of pensioners.

NI cuts are directly aimed at working people.

However, critics of the policy, mostly from within the Tory party, argue that it fits the "definition of insanity" approach.

That is to say, doing the same thing twice and expecting different results.

There was no poll bounce after the last NI cut.

So the very real risk is that having spent almost £10bn, the Conservatives have very little to show for it in purely political terms.

We should be hearing from Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer - but it appears a division has been called in the House of Commons.

It has been reported that the SNP have objected to the immediate tax changes.

To note, there is not typically a division at this stage of budget proceedings.

We'll keep you updated.

Our political editor Beth Rigby is now giving her immediate reaction to the spring budget, which has just been delivered by Chancellor Jeremy Hunt.

She agrees the financial statement did not feel like a May election budget.

"There has been expectation around Westminster that what was briefed out was only part of what the chancellor was going to do," she says.

"Now, to be fair to those in government we kept being told that this was a 'prove a point' budget, that it's not going to be a poll shifter, that this is to show the plan is on track."

Beth adds: "It is a bit of a surprise that the biggest thing in that budget that was new was the changes to the child benefit regime for middle earners."

She says one former cabinet minister told her mid-budget that "this is terrible, it's a shame really".

"I think what we're going to see now, the politics of this is the fallout of a party that is clamouring for more," Beth adds.

She says there was a "hope" from the benches that, even if an income tax cut wasn't announced, there would be an "indication" that it was on the way.

Our Politics Hub presenter Sophy Ridge pipes in: "A budget without a rabbit? That's pretty unusual."
