World of Warcraft - How To Unlock Flying in Shadowlands

World of Warcraft players can speed up their dailies and alt leveling by unlocking flying in Shadowlands with these steps.

It’s been a while since World of Warcraft’s latest expansion, Shadowlands , arrived and implemented the new level 60 cap. A lot of players may have taken a break after hitting 60 and exploring the early expansion endgame , but some big new content patches are prompting a return to the game for many, which means it’s time to play a bit of catch up.

The first item on many World of Warcraft players’ list is going to be unlocking Flying in the Shadowlands zones. This makes World Quests much easier and also greatly speeds up the alt leveling experience. Luckily, the task is much simpler this time around in comparison to recent expansions.

RELATED: World Of Warcraft: Every Class Since Shadowlands Released, Ranked (& How Easy They Are to Play)

Players are no longer required to work through a massive Pathfinder achievement chain. Instead, unlocking flying in Shadowlands is largely tied to campaign progress and Covenant Renown (which conveniently progresses mostly in parallel to campaign progress).

The list if items for players to complete in order to unlock flying is fairly short this time around, though it will require some dedicated hours of gameplay focusing specifically on campaign quests (both Convenant and Chains of Domination ):

Shadowlands Flying Unlock Requirements

  • Reach Renown 44 (complete the Convenant storyline along the way to speed this up)
  • Complete "The Last Sigil" - Chapter 4 of the Chains of Domination campaign
  • Receive Memories of Sunless Skies Icon Memories of Sunless Skies and unlock account-wide flying in the Shadowlands zones. This achievement should unlock automatically when the previous two requirements have been completed.

Where is flying available in Shadowlands?

This means players don’t need to worry about getting 100% exploration of each zone, any reputation requirements, or any of the other pre- Shadowlands Pathfinder sort of requirements. Simply progress through the campaign to the necessary point, each Covenant Renown along the way, and then the achievement will be unlocked. A lot of “catch up” changes have taken place in recent months, so it shouldn’t take very long at all for any level 60 player to meet those requirements if they focus in on the task at hand and ignore side quests and distractions along the way.

Be sure to check back in the near future for more WoW news, updates, and strategy guides. Until then, For The Horde!

How to Unlock Shadowlands Flying

Last Updated: June 8, 2023 by Archdruid Andoris Leave a Comment

A step-by-step guide to earning flying in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands

wow travel to shadowlands

Are you ready to take to the skies of Shadowlands with your stable of beautiful flying mounts? If so, you are in the right place. In this guide, I will walk you through every step required to unlock flying in Shadowlands. We’ll dive into the details in a moment, but first I wanted to give you a short overview of the steps.

You can unlock Shadowlands flying by following these steps.

  • Play through the Shadowlands storyline and join a covenant.
  • Complete your covenant campaign (9 chapters); requires renown 22.
  • Finish the first 4 chapters of the Korthia (Chains of Domination) storyline to receive Memories of Sunless Skies , which teaches account-wide flying; requires renown 44.

These steps will unlock flying in Bastion, Revendreth, Maldraxxus, and Ardenweld. If you are looking to unlock flying in Zereth Mortis check out my guide to that here .

In the rest of the guide, I’ll walk you through each of the steps and answer some frequently asked questions about Shadowlands flying.

Step 1: Play through the Shadowlands storyline and join a Covenant

The first step in unlocking flying is to play through the main storyline of Shadowlands. This requires a character who is at least level 48.

To begin the storyline, you will need to do the quest called Shadowlands: A Chilling Summons that pops up automatically at level 48. This will lead you back to your capital city, through a death-gate to Ice Crown Citadel, and into the Shadowlands.

The storyline will wind its way through four main zones in the following order: Bastion, Maldraxxus, Ardenweld, and Revendreth. You can identify quests that are part of the main story by the gilded brown shield that appears around the outside of the exclamation point.

wow travel to shadowlands

If you get lost in the process, you can always see the next step in the storyline in the sidebar of your quest log (keyboard shortcut ‘L’).

Step 2: Complete your Covenant campaign

After joining a covenant, it is time to work on completing their campaign. You can see your current progress in the covenant storyline from the quest log also.

As an example, I have completed the first 3 chapters of the campaign for my Kyrian demon hunter. This is also helpful because it will tell you where you need to go, or what you need to do, to continue with the storyline.

wow travel to shadowlands

The last chapter in the covenant campaign is locked behind a level 22 renown requirement. If you are behind on renown, you can catch up by doing your daily covenant callings, killing weekly world bosses, winning PvP matches, completing dungeons (including m+), or defeating raid bosses.

You will also earn renown as you complete portions of the covenant campaign and through the 2 weekly renown quests in 9.1 — Replenish the Reservoir and Shaping Fate .

Step 3: Finish the first 4 chapters of the Korthia storyline

The third requirement to unlock flying is completing the first 4 chapters of the Korthia — or Chains of Domination — storyline. If you want, you can actually get started on this after completing the first 2 parts of your covenant campaign (through the Torghast chapter) and the basic introduction to your covenant sanctum.

However, once you reach chapter 4, The Last Sigil , you will need to finish your covenant campaign and reach renown 44 to continue.

The advantage of starting early is the ability to begin doing Korthia daily quests and content to earn catch-up gear. If you are a new or returning player, I would definitely recommend starting on the Korthia storyline as early as possible for this reason.

You can begin the Korthia storyline by accepting and following The First Move quest chain that pops up in Oribos after completing the covenant intro quests and part 2 of the campaign through The Search for Baine quest.

Like the previous two requirements, you can see your current progress by looking at the sidebar in the quest log. At the end of the 4 th chapter, you will receive Memories of Sunless Skies as a quest reward. All that is left to do is open your bags and click it to unlock Shadowlands flying!

Unlocking Shadowlands flying with Memories of Sunless Skies

Frequently Asked Questions

Once unlocked, Shadowlands flying enables you to fly in the four main Shadowlands zones — Bastion, Revendreth, Ardenweld, and Maldraxxus. You cannot fly in any of the other zones, including The Maw, Korthia, or Oribos.

Yes, Shadowlands flying will be unlocked for all characters on your account after using the Memories of Sunless Skies item.

The time it takes to unlock flying is going to depend on where you are in the process. If you are brand new and starting at level 1, it will take much longer than someone who is working on the covenant campaign. Here are the flying requirements and my estimates of how long each one will take. Level 1 to 50: 15-20 hours Shadowlands storyline: 10-15 hours Covenant campaign + earning renown: 4-6 hours Korthia storyline: 2-3 hours If you are new, it may take you well over 40 hours to unlock flying in Shadowlands. For players with a level 50 character, but are new to the expansion, it will take a little over 20 hours.

No, you cannot fly between Shadowlands zones. This means that you will still need to take flight paths to get to each of the areas before taking to the skies.

If you have earned flying, you can begin flying on your alts once you enter the Shadowlands around level 48. You will still be limited to flying only in the four main areas though; so no flying during the Maw intro storyline.

If you have already paid for the basic Expert Riding (flying) training, you don’t need anything else. That is the riding skill that gives you 150% flying speed at level 30 in exchange for 250 gold. To go faster, you will need to drop the 5,000 gold for the 310% speed Master Riding .

Using Memories of Sunless Skies will only unlock flying in Shadowlands zones. Purchasing Expert Riding will unlock flying in all expansions up to Legion. The only previous expansion that requires an unlock process is Battle for Azeroth. That process is a little lengthy so I would recommend reading my full detailed guide on BFA flying for more.

Yes! Once you use Memories of Sunless Skies you will be able to fly in spirit form. This was added in patch 9.1.5 and is great for getting over and around tricky terrain to find your corpse.

No, Memories of Sunless Skies will not unlock flying in Zereth Mortis. You will need to follow the steps in my Zereth Mortis Flying Guide to gain access to the skies in ZM.

Use these top World of Warcraft tips to dominate the Shadowlands

Ease into the afterlife with this WoW Shadowlands guide.

wow Shadowlands guide

Looking for some tips for WoW Shadowlands? There's a lot to learn with the inevitable new zones, hubs, and systems that mark the launch of any new World of Warcraft expansion. And Shadowlands, in particular, has much more to get your head around with the introduction of the level squish and the overhaul of most core class abilities.

You won't need to worry about most of the new systems, such as WoW Covenants and WoW Shadowlands legendary crafting , until you reach level 60. But with so much change afoot, you may be struggling to know where to start as you journey into the afterlife for the first time. Fear not, champion—this WoW Shadowlands guide has some great tips to get you started on your new adventure.

WoW Shadowlands guide: Don't skip the side areas

Blizzard has rebalanced levelling XP for Shadowlands repeatedly, to the point where you can get to level 60 doing relatively few side quests. Indeed, if you’re Alliance and willing to risk war mode, you may not need any at all. But this doesn’t mean you should give up on all those non-campaign quest hubs. They’re worth doing, whether it’s before or after you’ve hit 60 and finished the campaign.

Side quests offer reputation with the faction in that zone. Some also unlock world quests, increasing the rewards available to you at maximum level. Depending on your gear level and the zone, several offer key upgrades, while most of the mount, pet, toy and 'fun' item rewards come from side quest chains.

At level 60, focus on finishing endgame quests

Many of the game’s key features don’t unlock until you complete the related quests. This includes collecting Soul Ash from the endless dungeon Torghast, used create legendary items, alongside upgrading your Covenant Sanctum home base. This means for most players, completing all quests you get in your Sanctum, Oribos or from Ven’ari in the Maw take priority when you hit 60, as they’ll unlock content that you want to progress in.

It’s tempting to jump into that more grindy content right away, tooling around the Maw or Torghast running dungeons and the like. But in some cases, unlocking these quests will get you more-lucrative rewards from those activities.

World of Warcraft: Shadowlands

Stock up on Goblin Gliders

Shadowlands’ zones vary greatly in height. Two in particular—the angelic planes of Bastion and the gothic vampire spires of Revendreth—can be frustrating to navigate if you have to find a way down every time.

If you don’t have the ability to throw yourself off tall places and live, it’s worth investing in a giant pile of gliders so you can soar from one destination to the next. As a bonus, the views of the landscapes are lovely, and you may find that you can get directly where you need to go, traveling a chunk of the zone on a single glider.

Do level professions, but don’t stress about them

When you first hit Oribos as part of questing, it’s worth training in the next ranks of your professions. But don’t worry too much about using them. If you have a gathering profession, definitely hop on those herbs or ores as you pass them. But if you need the gold, you might consider selling those supplies rather than using them to level up. Prices are never higher on raw materials than at the start of an expansion.

For the rest of your professions, hang onto the raw materials, but don’t obsess too much about farming them. There are so many upgrades available when you first hit maximum level that you’ll get more bang for your buck elsewhere for personal upgrades.

When you do level your crafting skills, your priority should be making the ‘base’ legendary items others will use to upgrade, or the supplies used for those base items. This will be a steady source of income for most crafters.

Pick up some Inky Black potions

In case you’ve never tried them, Inky Black potions are a revelation. Purchased from the vendor at the monthly Darkmoon Faire, they apply a weather effect that turns off all ambient natural lighting. This leaves behind the special lighting effects Blizzard puts into landscapes, such as torches and lanterns, but it also retrains the lighting highlights that add depth to every scene.

Shadowlands’ zones look particularly amazing with Inky Black potions up. The Maw looks stunning when the lights are turned off, while Bastion turns into a starry world of streaming anima and glowing creatures. Revendreth amps up its vampire vibe (after all, its residents do love the dark).

wow guide shadowlands

Pick one thing, work on it, move on

As a new expansion, Shadowlands is stuffed with activities, both for while you’re levelling and when you hit 60. It’s hard to know what to do first, but don’t worry. Unless you’re a high-end progression raider, there is little you’ll miss out on if you don’t do it immediately. Pick something you like, work on that for a bit, then move on.

Most importantly, take the time to relax and enjoy whatever it is you’re doing. There are daily quests, called Callings, from your Covenant Sanctum, and you’ll want to run Torghast weekly to collect Soul Ash for your legendary items. If you want to kick up your preparations, do the ongoing quests from your Sanctum, the Maw and Oribos.

Wow tips Shadowlands

Re-learn your class

Shadowlands reintroduced a pile of abilities for all classes and specializations, some of which may affect your experience more than others. If you didn’t play much during the pre-patch, these will be relatively new to you. In addition, many classes feel very different to play at the start of an expansion than they do at the end, thanks to the drastically reduced player power as you’re first levelling up.

The solution is to educate yourself. That means visiting your class’ community Discord server and asking friends for recommendations for sites that are great for your class and specialization (even if your friend is Google.) It’s worth taking this time, when we all hit like kittens, to relearn things you thought you knew about your character.
