16 Essential Tips For Your First Visit At The San Diego Zoo

visiting san diego zoo safari park

  • Activities and Interests
  • Destinations
  • United States

Koalas and Komodos. Camels and condors. Rhinos and reindeer. The list of animals at the San Diego Zoo is long, and for most people, it takes more than a day to see them all. From elephants to invertebrates, the zoo is home to more than 12,000 creatures spread across a 100-acre park. Miles of paved paths and roads criss-cross the zoo, wandering through areas representing habitats from tropical rainforests to the Arctic.

That’s actually part of the fun. “If you go see the tigers, you feel like you’re walking through a trail in Africa,” said Zoo Ambassador Rick Schwartz. “If you go see the polar bears, you feel like you’re in the Arctic.”

With so much to see and ground to cover, how do you make the most of your visit? We talked with Schwartz to find out the answers. Here is his advice, plus other tips and tricks to make your trip to the San Diego Zoo a roaring success.

Note: The San Diego Zoo generously hosted my visit. All opinions are my own.

1. Download The App

Before you visit the zoo, the first thing to do is download the San Diego Zoo app (found on the App Store and Google Play ) to your smartphone, Schwartz advised. That’s where you’ll find the most up-to-date information on hours, admission prices, and special events, such as wildlife care specialist talks. You can also go to the zoo website .

The app has a bonus: You can find your favorite animals (just tap on the map in the background) and save them (tap the plus sign in the upper right) to your planner (the clipboard icon at the bottom of the screen). Each animal page will also alert you to wildlife care specialist talks, if there is one. Paper maps are available just inside the admission gate.

California Condor spreading wings open wide.

2. Plan To See Your Favorite Animals

With so many exotic animals to see, it’s helpful to set priorities. Make a plan for visiting your favorite animals and new areas of the zoo, such as the immersive Wildlife Explorers Basecamp. The planner in the app can record your must-see animals and offer information about them. The app and the zoo map (found in printable PDF form ) can show you where they are located.

Check to see if there are any wildlife care specialist talks . Look out for for special talks and up-close experiences, which are available for an additional fee.

“If you don’t have a favorite, take the bus tour and see what strikes your fancy,” Schwartz recommends.

Skyfari Aerial Tram over the Treetops complex.

3. Strategize Your Route

Now that you know what animals you don’t want to miss, it’s time to strategize your route to make the most of your time and minimize tiring uphill hikes. With the animals’ locations marked on the zoo map, you can plan your day to reduce the distances and uphills you’ll walk as you go from one section of the park to another.

You can also use the map to spot stairs, the aerial tram route, the Kangaroo Bus stops, and the elevators that will be key to navigating the park. Unlimited use of these is included in the admission price.

You’ll find the elevators at the Treetops complex, the end of the Bashor Bridge, and where the Monkey Trail and Tiger Trail meet. The double-decker Kangaroo bus stops are also marked on the map. It’s not easy to spot the hills on the map, but the tram, bus, and elevators allow you to avoid most uphill treks. For more help planning a route, stop by the information booth on Front Street.

4. Wear Good Walking Shoes

Even with the aerial tram and the in-park shuttle bus, seeing the animals is still going to take some walking. “My number one tip is to wear comfortable shoes,” Schwartz said. “The biggest mistake is wearing beach sandals because you’re planning on going to the beach later.”

Sun hats hanging on a rack.

5. Use Sun Protection

“The other [big mistake] is not putting on sunscreen,” Schwartz said. San Diego’s mild weather doesn’t feel too hot, but a day in the sun will nonetheless leave you red as a lobster. Shops along Front Street, just inside the gate, sell a variety of sunhats, sunglasses, and sunscreen if you don’t bring your own.

6. Rent Some Wheels

Wheelchairs, strollers, and motorized scooters are all available on Front Street, to the left of the entrance gate. They are available on a first come, first served basis. An ADA shuttle is also available for guests with mobility challenges. More information about San Diego Zoo services can be found at the website or the information booth (to the right of the entrance, near the bus tours sign). Guided cart tours are also available for a fee.

7. Lighten Your Load

You don’t have to haul your lunch, coats, luggage, and other items around with you all day. Lockers are on Front Street to the left of the entrance; if they are out of order, the stroller rental counter can store your items for a fee. Be aware that there aren’t any dog kennels, and the zoo has a strict no-dog policy. Only trained guide dogs are allowed in the park.

8. Buy Tickets In Advance

The great advantage of buying tickets in advance is that you get to skip the line and go straight into the zoo. You can buy tickets online for a single day at the zoo, multiple days, or both the zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. The zoo also offers the San Diego 3-for-1 Pass, which includes the San Diego Zoo, Safari Park, and SeaWorld San Diego.

Wildlife Explorers Basecamp.

9. Save On Admission

The zoo’s San Diego 3-for-1 Pass isn’t the only pass that offers savings on admission by combining the zoo with other attractions. A few to check out: San Diego CityPASS , Go San Diego Pass, and the Go City All-Inclusive Pass . You must buy tickets at the gate and show appropriate identification to receive the veterans’ or AAA membership discount on admission. The San Diego Zoo does not offer reciprocity for members of other zoos.

10. Get There Early

Getting to the zoo as soon as it opens has several advantages: easier parking, shorter lines, and cooler temperatures. It also makes it easier to rent a wheelchair or motorized scooter. But the main reason to go early is that the animals are most active in the mornings and evenings.

11. Remember Where You Parked Your Car

It’s a big parking lot. Take note (or a photo) of the row you parked in so when you’re tired after a long day exploring, you don’t have to work too hard to remember where you left the car — especially a rental car that you’re unlikely to recognize anyway.

Polar Bear coming up from the water.

12. Take The Free Bus Tour

The free 30-minute bus tour (to the right of the entrance) is a great way to get an overall view of the park, to see what areas you might want to explore later. It’s not a hop-on-and-off bus; that’s the Kangaroo Bus, which is also free. Try to sit on the right side of the bus; the polar bears are on the left, but most other animals are on the right.

Albert's Restaurant

13. Read The Menus

The zoo has 20 venues with food and drinks — including wine and beer — though they may not all be open when you visit. Read through the menus online before you go and decide on a few lunch options, so when hunger strikes you know where to go. If you want to enjoy fine dining at Albert’s, it never hurts to make reservations.

14. Bring Your Own Lunch And Snacks

You can bring your own lunches, snacks, and drinks to the zoo. This can be especially helpful if you have allergies or special dietary needs. Lunch bags can be stored in lockers or checked at the stroller rental counter (for a fee) if you don’t want to carry them all day. Leave the large coolers at home.

15. Reserve A Special Experience

For a truly memorable day, reserve one of the up-close or behind-the-scenes experiences at the zoo. Spend the morning with cheetahs, learn more about other cats, or get a unique view of the animals at the zoo with 90-minute Inside Look tours. Reserve these special experiences in advance. The cost of tours and experiences varies.

16. Make A Day Of It

Schwartz’s final piece of advice? Bring the whole family, and take your time exploring the zoo. “It’s one of the things we can all do it together. That’s one of the great things about it,” he said. “Plan to spend a whole day to really enjoy it.”

San Diego Zoo vs San Diego Zoo Safari Park: Which is Better?

Gorilla Statue at the San Diego Zoo

Any animal lover will enjoy a San Diego vacation, as there are countless ways to get closer to nature, from peering into the La Jolla Tide Pools to seeing marine life at SeaWorld San Diego and the Birch Aquarium at Scripps . Among these many options, the most popular attractions centered around animals are the San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in Escondido .

Both of these attractions are tons of fun, but if you’ll only be in San Diego for a few days, you may not have time to check them both out.

Plus, while both attractions are available through the All-inclusive version of the Go City San Diego pass (which you can purchase using our discount code GVSD5OFF for additional savings), the Explorer pass version includes admission for either the Zoo or the Safari Park, but not both on the same pass.

Whether you’re short on time or just trying to decide which attraction you’ll like best, use our comparison guide to decide whether the San Diego Safari Park or Zoo appeals more to you!

Cost Comparison of San Diego Zoo vs San Diego Zoo Safari Park

I really think in terms of value and what you get, both the zoo and safari park are reasonably priced, making them great picks for families on a budget. The San Diego Zoo is world-class and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park is big and a unique experience.

To make this comparison tougher, the standard admission costs at both parks are the same! Base admission prices let you visit all major attractions, with optional add-ons for special experiences at each location. Let’s dive in a little deeper.

How Big Is the San Diego Zoo vs San Diego Zoo Safari Park

Tons of Things to Do at the San Diego Zoo

In terms of sheer size, the San Diego Safari Park is three times bigger than the San Diego Zoo, spanning over 300 acres compared to the zoo’s 100 acres! But neither are small by any means.

The exhibits at the safari park are designed to evoke the feeling of going on a real safari, so exhibits are larger with space for the animals to roam. They’re designed to be viewed via a tram tour, though there are plenty of spots to get out and stretch your legs too.

The San Diego Zoo, meanwhile, is a little more condensed, making it easily walkable.

Length of Your Visit

If you’re trying to fit in a visit on a limited schedule, I think the San Diego Zoo is the better choice, as most of the park’s exhibits can be seen within about 3-4 hours. While you could certainly spend longer here if you prefer, even up to a full-day trip, this is enough time to get a good overview of the park and see a decent selection of animals.

Visits to the San Diego Safari Park average a little longer, at about 4-5 hours, or more if you’re hoping to see every exhibit. It’s a good pick for groups who want to spend the day at one location, as there are more than enough tours and animal experiences.

It’s also about 40 minutes outside of the city versus about 5-10 for the San Diego Zoo so you may want to consider travel time in depending on where in town you’ll be staying.

Tips for Visiting the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park

Giraffe at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park

When Is the Best Time to Visit Each Park?

Visitors to both the zoo and safari park are subject to the schedule of the animals. For both parks, animals tend to be more active in the early mornings, and you’re more likely to catch feeding times early in the day too.

Condor Sculpture at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park

Which Is Better for Families?

While both parks have family-friendly experiences, the walkability and denser layout of the zoo makes it a favorite for parents with younger kids.

With that though, the safari park is a unique experience so for families with older kids, I think it would be my choice!

Do These Attractions Have Visitor Centers?

The San Diego Zoo’s Guest Services Center is next to the Bus Tour entrance. It shares hours with the zoo, open from 9 AM–5 PM daily.

Like the zoo, the safari park’s guest services are available during the same hours as the park itself, from 9 AM-5 PM. The booth is located at the Park Base.

Hours are subject to change, so double check on the official websites before visiting either attraction.

13 San Diego Zoo vs Safari Park Differences-Which is Best?

Which is better to visit, San Diego Zoo or Safari Park? I’ve compared more than a dozen factors for you including park size, ticket price, what’s included, animals, tours, and more to help you make up your mind.

Visit San Diego Zoo instead of Safari Park if you can’t see both. They’re each worth it. But the Zoo’s a better deal because parking’s free. You’ll see more animals in less time. It’s closer to downtown, has better food & weather. However, go to Safari Park if you want different, unique experiences.

Which is better, San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park?

As a long-time member of San Diego Zoo Global (I remember when Safari Park was Wild Animal Park), and a certified animal nut I know that a quick summary is not going to convince you one way or the other. So I’ve gone into detail in this article about the major differences between both zoological parks. Because your time is precious and you deserve to have a wonderful time in San Diego.

Safari Park’s Bigger

visiting san diego zoo safari park

Safari Park is much larger than the San Diego Zoo. The raw land area figures are:

  • Safari Park is 1800 acres
  • Zoo size – approximately 100 acres

But don’t let the HUGE size of Safari Park make you think that it’s too much to see in one day.

You’d think that if it takes 3 to 4 hours to see the 100-acre Zoo, it should take a LOT longer to see the 1,800 acre Safari Park. Right? But the San Diego Zoo Global FAQ” says, “we recommend a minimum of three to four hours to see some of the Zoo and a minimum of four to six hours to experience a portion of the Safari Park.”

Why recommend such a short period of time to see Safari Park?

Because the area accessible to the walking public in Safari Park is only about 20% larger than the Zoo . I outlined the perimeter of the public areas for both the Zoo and the Safari Park on Google Maps. And then I let the Google Maps tool calculate the two areas.

visiting san diego zoo safari park

  • San Diego Zoo Walking Areas = 65.44 acres (2850575.23 ft²)
  • Safari Park Walking Areas = 79.2 acres (3,451,313.63 ft²)

Safari Park is very large. Half of the land is set aside in perpetuity for habitat conservation for local wildlife and plants of the highly endangered Southern California Coastal Sage Scrub .

visiting san diego zoo safari park

And of the remaining 900 acres, only about 80 are open for the public to walk in. The other 780 acres are their famous large field exhibits that are only accessible via guided truck tours or the Africa Tram. Or they are closed to the public entirely.  Safari Park (San Diego Wild Animal Park) was established as a breeding and conservation facility and the land use reflects this.

visiting san diego zoo safari park

Ticket prices at the gate for both San Diego Zoo and Safari Park are equal. The major difference between the two is that parking is free at the Zoo. At Safari Park there’s a parking fee.

If you’re interested in finding authentic discounted tickets, passes, and coupons to either attraction, I’ve written two pages for you:

  • 30 Best Ways to Save on San Diego Zoo Discount Tickets – with chart
  • Top 30 San Diego Safari Park Discount Ticket Deals | 2023 – with chart

Here are the most recent ticket prices that you’ll pay at the gate:

  • $71 for adults (age 12 or older)
  • $61 Children (aged 3 to 11)
  • Children under 3 are free

But you don’t have to pay the full gate price. Ares Travel , my favorite local San Diego authorized ticket seller sent me a discount coupon code to share with you.

Click HERE and I’ll immediately email the code and the links where to use it. This is a one-time-only email. You are NOT signing up for a million emails, or ransoming a Nigerian prince.

They’ve also got discounted package offers. One of them is the San Diego Zoo, San Diego Zoo Safari Park & SeaWorld San Diego Ticket Combo Deal . Buying this bundle gets you into all 3 of the major San Diego animal attractions and saves $35 per adult off the price if you’d booked them all separately.

San Diego Zoo’s More Worth Visiting

What's included with San Diego Zoo and Safari Park tickets?

San Diego Zoo tickets are a better deal. There are a greater number of exhibits featuring animals and plants from all over the globe and there are more “rides” free with your admission. But Safari Park is well worth a visit also because it’s not the usual zoo experience. It feels more spacious. You wander through the animals’ habitats rather than observing them in cages. For more on why I feel that way visit my “ Is San Diego Safari Park Worth It? ” page.

What Do You Get With Your San Diego Zoo Ticket?

FREE PARKING . Parking is free at the San Diego Zoo. I suggest you get there early in the morning because otherwise, you might be parking rather far out in the free parking area. If for some reason you are arriving later (maybe the Summer Nighttime Zoo?), there’s overflow parking by the Navy hospital. A free shuttle will take you from that location to the Zoo and back to your car.

There is also valet parking available. On a busy day, it might be worth it.

San Diego Zoo's free guided bus tour is highly recommended.

GUIDED BUS TOUR

I highly recommend the guided zoo bus tour. It takes 25 to 35 minutes. It will give you a quick overview of the zoo.

There are two situations where I wouldn’t recommend it. The first is if you have a very active toddler. They probably won’t want to sit still that long.

The second is if you have a favorite animal that you want to photograph first thing in the morning. In that case, run over to the animal that you want to take pictures of and then return for the bus tour.

KANGAROO EXPRESS BUS

The Kangaroo Bus is a time and energy saver. It starts running at 10:30 AM. It goes in a loop through the middle and along the outer edge of the park closest to Hwy 163. The route goes from Urban Jungle down the steep Center Street hill where the bears are. Then from stop #2 by the snow leopards, it will take you up the steepest section of Park Way to stop #3. That’s at the edge of the Northern Frontier. Between stops  #3 and #4 by the meerkats, the terrain is flat.

SKYFARI AERIAL TRAMWAY

This gondola ride takes you from nearby the Children’s Zoo across the canyon to Elephant Odyssey. It’s got great views of the Zoo, Balboa Park, and the Downtown San Diego skyline. It’s also a great way to rest and cool off.

KEEPER TALKS

These free-with-entry talks are given by the keepers and cover many species from polar bears and lemurs to giraffes. Unfortunately, their scheduling has been disrupted by the Zoo’s efforts to prevent COVID-spreading crowds. Check for the schedule at the Guest Services/Ticket & Tours booth near the Zoo entrance just across Front Street.

ANIMAL ENCOUNTERS

These presentations are an opportunity for you to see some of the Zoo’s animal ambassadors. You never know what type of animal will appear. I’ve seen huge Eurasian owls, cheetahs with their dog companions, chatty parrots, and many others.

These presentations take place in two spots. One location’s at the Front Street Stage which is on your left as you enter. The other is at the Rocks Box stage within the Africa Rocks exhibit which takes about 25-30 minutes to walk to from the entrance.

The San Diego Zoo is divided into eight “Zoo Zones.” They are designed to bring together both animal and plant species that live in specific types of climates and habitats throughout the world.

Outback – the stars of this zone are cute koalas. But there are also kookaburras, Tasmanian devils, wallabies, and other exotics from the land down under.

Asian Passage –  Don’t skip this just because the giant pandas went home to China in 2019. Go there to see the red pandas which are like upscale, fashionista raccoons. They were always a lot more active than the giant pandas and I never really understood why they didn’t get more attention. And then spend some quality time admiring the beauty of the Amur and snow leopards. They nap a lot as all cats do. But they’re so elegant, even when they’re asleep.

Africa Rocks This exhibit really does. There’s so much to see here. I love the lemurs and their fossa predators. Plan to spend lots of time watching the penguins zoom around the local leopard sharks in the underwater viewing area of the aquarium in their Penguin Habitat at Cape Fynbos. The space is cool and shaded with plenty of benches. It’s very popular on hot days. And sometimes the penguins are curious enough to stop and watch the children.

Lost Forest This area’s biggest stars are the troop of western lowland gorillas. But my favorites are the orangutans. When they’re relaxing and having a snack they look like orange-haired gurus contemplating the secrets of the universe. But there’s much more to see here; Malayan tigers, exotic okapi, the occasional spot-necked otter, and Allen’s swamp monkey playing tag.

Urban Jungle There seems to be very little rhyme or reason to the types of animals that you’ll find here. It’s home to a grab-bag of animals including the cheetah animal ambassadors and the endangered one-horned rhino. It’s also the location of the interactive “Animals in Action” paid experience where you’ll get a chance to interact with different types of critters, sometimes even rhinos. Click HERE for daily discounts on “Animals in Action”.

My favorite in this section is the Masai giraffe herd exhibit. This is one of the only giraffe exhibits that I’ve seen where you are standing very close to them — on the same level. As you tilt your head back, and back, you realize just how TALL these gentle giants are. You can also feed them for a very reasonable cost.

Northern Frontier The west Skyfari boarding point is here. It’s also home to the rulers of the tundra, polar bears. But they aren’t very regal, they’re clowns. They enjoy diving off rocks and surprising each other, batting around enrichment items, and eating junk food. Ok. Their “junk food” is carrots. But since the polar bears can’t digest them, it’s like us chewing sugar-free gum. The arctic foxes are adorable too.

Elephant Odyssey Take a trip back in time to California’s Pleistocene epoch 12,000 years ago through animals that exist today. Some died out here but thrived elsewhere. See how elephants, lions, jaguars, condors, secretary birds, condors, camels, and capybara are all connected by their ancestral roots here in San Diego. There are great opportunities for unique photos of your kids (or you) riding a 10-foot long ancient lion or about to be eaten by a huge predatory bird.

Discovery Outpost – This is the most varied section of the zoo. Skyfari’s east boarding point is here. View entertaining and informative animal shows at the Wegeforth Bowl. You’ll find tiny jewel-like hummingbirds next door to 8-foot-long Komodo dragons. Many more reptiles can also be found here.

Until the Children’s Zoo and Wegeforth Bowl renovations are complete there are only limited presentations outside of the Bowl.

The 4D Theater is a paid experience that many think is not worth the price. The presentation is SHORT, less than 15 minutes. The 3D screen’s small, so you’re likely to be way off to one side or the other. The 4th dimension is smell, temperature changes, and getting water squirted on you (worth it on hot days?). The seats don’t move, they vibrate. And the wait can be up to an hour on peak days.

What’s Included With Safari Park Tickets?

To sum it up, your Safari Park admission ticket includes anything that doesn’t have “Safari” in its title. Any activity or experience that does is something that you will need to pay extra for (the exception is riding the Conservation Carousel which requires an additional $6 fee). That’s the short explanation. I’ve written EVERYTHING you need to know about it here at, “ What’s Included In San Diego Safari Park Admission Tickets? ”

Parking Costs Extra – Unlike at the Zoo, parking is $20 per vehicle; $30 for RV parking. Preferred parking is available on weekends and holidays for $48).

Save with a secret San Diego Safari Park promo code on each 1-Day Pass. Go any day. Go directly to the gate. Click HERE to buy. Enter the code at checkout. You will get your tickets by email .

Here’s a list of exhibits and activities that are included with your Safari Park Admission ticket:

Animal exhibits.

One of the great things about San Diego Safari Park is the way that they’ve gone to great lengths to blur the boundaries between you, their animals, and the landscape beyond. Here are some of my favorites:

Lion Camp – I love watching the lions watching the antelope watching them from the large field enclosure next door. These lions aren’t the usually bored cats you see at most zoos. They’re either fully engaged in observing the potential ‘meals’ in the fields or they’re napping. And when they’re snoozing they are sometimes right up against the glass where you can take great selfies or compare the sizes of their paws to yours.

Tiger Trai l – It’s lush and beautiful. It’s more like you’re in the cage rather than the kitties. If you’re lucky the tigers will be stalking YOU. I spend way too much time here. If you want to know why you should spend time there read my page on the “ 11 Coolest Reasons to See San Diego Safari Park Tiger Trail ”

Walkabout Australia – The platypuses are a San Diego Safari Park must-see! They’re the only ones on exhibit outside of Australia in the entire world. This exhibit requires a bit of patience and careful observation. They’re quick. And almost everyone is surprised by how they look and move.

They also have tree kangaroos. Heck, I didn’t even know that kangaroos lived in trees.

Bob and I were lucky enough to be there the day that the 2nd Matschie’s tree kangaroo born at Safari Park ventured out of Mom’s pouch.

Photo of tree kangaroo and joey at San Diego Safari Park. Species is Matschie's tree kangaroo. Photo taken by Bob Ulrich

Arona, her mother, welcomed her offspring Kidori into the world after a gestation period of 44 days. At birth, the joey was just about 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) in size, fitting snugly in Mom’s pouch. It took nine months for Kikori to venture out of her mother’s pouch.

These long-clawed, mahogany and cream-colored tree kangaroos weigh 25 pounds at the most. Their whorly, dense fur sheds water easily. And their superpower is that they can jump an amazing 60 feet to the ground without injury.

But wait, there’s more to Walkabout Australia. Wander into the Kangaroo Walk and you’ll be surrounded by a mob of ‘roos, wallabies, and cute baby joeys. There’s nothing that brings smiles to faces faster than a young bounder with a case of the “zoomies”. They’re ricocheting furry ping-pong balls.

It may be possible to pet the wallabies and kangaroos . It depends upon whether the COVID restrictions have been lifted. Ask if it’s ok. And if it is don’t wander off the paths chasing them. You’ll never catch them anyway.  Be patient and let them come to you. And yes, they’re as soft and woolly as they look. For more information, check out my page on touching or holding the animals at San Diego Zoo and Safari Park .

San Diego Safari Park Activities and Rides

AFRICA SAFARI TRAM

I love the Africa tram. I could ride it all day.  It takes you on a 25-30 minute ride through several of the large open area enclosures. These enclosures have multiple different species in them and they interact as they would in the wild. One of the things you will see is how all the animals look to the giraffes to be their lookout. Once the giraffes start running, everybody runs. And you then see this wave of animals flying over the hills and then they all just stop for no apparent reason.

There are no predators in the large enclosed exhibit fields. But the herbivores can see, hear and smell the nearby lions and cheetahs. It keeps them on alert and surprisingly appears to help to increase the number of babies.

CHEETAH RUN

This used to be an event that was free with admission. But during COVID they switched the format to a paid tour. However, I highly recommend it as an add-on to your visit. Seeing these cool cats go from zero to almost 60 mph in three strides never gets old.

FREQUENT FLYERS BIRD SHOW

This free-flying bird show never fails to amaze me because the birds can fly away any time they choose. And they don’t.

I like it because you get to see large birds in flight close enough overhead that if you stretched up your hands you’d touch them (specifically NOT ALLOWED by the way…) You’ll enjoy it. And the birds seem to be having as good a time as the audience. Spoiler Alert: The star of the show is not a bird. But you’ll love him anyway.

TIGER KEEPER TALK

The Sumatran tigers get pampered with treats while showing off their impressive teeth, claws, size, and other adaptations. Keepers that know them best will clue you in on how they safely work with these big cats. If you’re lucky you’ll see a tiger standing at a full vertical stretch just a few feet away from you. Even though the Sumatran subspecies is one of the smallest of tigers, they’re unexpectedly intimidating when they’re on their hind legs going for a treat.

TRAINING TALK

This short training session for the longer Frequent Flyers Bird Show is well worth your time. It’s always a smaller, more intimate group than the bird show. You never know which birds will be brought out for training, so it’s never the same. I’ve seen everything from silently flying owls to scurrying guinea hens. Sit down and put your feet up. It’s a good break from walking.

San Diego Zoo Takes Less Time to Visit

How long do you need to visit San Diego Zoo vs Safari Park?

Exploring San Diego Zoo is quicker than Safari Park. But both could be all-day attractions. Here’s the minimum time you should allocate for each according to the San Diego Zoo Global FAQ page :

  • Zoo 3-4 hours
  • Safari Park 4-6 hours

San Diego Zoo’s Closer to Downtown

visiting san diego zoo safari park

The San Diego Zoo is much closer to downtown than Safari Park. It’s only 3 miles from the center of downtown San Diego.

It will take you about 6 minutes by car from downtown to the zoo. It’s also public transit accessible. To ride the bus from downtown to the Zoo take the # 7 University & College line and get off at Park Blvd. & Zoo Place. Then walk about 4 minutes (0.2 miles) west to the Zoo entrance.

Safari Park is 35 miles north of downtown in Escondido. Travel time by car to San Diego Safari Park is 45 minutes each way. Public transportation takes almost 2 hours…one way. Taking a bus to Safari Park is just not practical for most people.

Unfortunately, I’ve seen the results of mistaking the two animal attractions. On several occasions, I’ve had to tell people trying to meet friends at the “zoo” that they’re more than 35 miles away from the San Diego Zoo because they’re at San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Oops!

San Diego Zoo Has More Animals

San Diego Zoo vs Safari Park, which has the most animals and where are they from?

The San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park has more individual animals, and more species and covers more earth habitats than the Safari Park .

San Diego Zoo – The zoo has approximately 3,700 animals in its collection. They represent more than 660 different species & subspecies. It also has almost 700,000 specimens of rare and endangered plant species. Their collection comes from all over the globe

Safari Park – The northern San Diego county branch of the San Diego Zoo has about 2,600 individual animals and 300 species & subspecies. The plants number about 1.3 million. Both the animal and plant collections are focused on Asia and Africa at Safari Park.

Source : San Diego Zoo Global FAQ : “ Tell me a bit about the San Diego Zoo ”,  “ Tell me a bit about the Safari Park ” and “ Plants of San Diego Zoo Global ”.

Safari Park Has Easier Walking

visiting san diego zoo safari park

The Safari Park is less demanding physically . It has fewer steep hills for you to navigate than the San Diego Zoo does. The biggest elevation change at Safari Park is between the Lemur Walk and the Balloon Safari and Lion Camp. But don’t worry. There’s an elevator there to take you up and down if you don’t feel like getting your cardio by taking the stairs.

San Diego Zoo has more hills. It’s built around a steep canyon. There are mechanical alternatives to trekking the elevation changes, they just take a bit more time. There’s an elevator, the Kangaroo Bus (and the Skyfari aerial gondola ride when renovations are complete) to help you get around. I usually don’t take them because I like the workout.

San Diego Zoo Has Better Food

San Diego Zoo has better food than Safari Park

San Diego Zoo has better food because of Albert’s Restaurant . You’ll enjoy a fine dining experience with daily chef’s specials, vegan & gluten-free choices & a full bar. This hidden gem has a lushly planted outdoor patio and a waterfall that makes it great for a special occasion. I wrote more on this page, “Where to find the best food at San Diego Zoo?” .

The best food at Safari Park is at the Watering Hole at Kijamii Overlook . It’s a sit-down full-service dining experience that’s a couple of giant steps above usual theme park fare. But the food’s still pre-prepared, so Albert’s at the Zoo comes out as a better restaurant.

On the plus side, Watering Hole entrees are big enough for two to share. It’s got a full bar and an AMAZING view of one of the large field enclosures. You’ll feel like you’re sharing your table with rhinos, giraffes, and antelope. I’ve reviewed all of the eateries at Safari Park on this page titled, “ Where’s the Best Place to Eat at San Diego Safari Park? ”

San Diego Zoo Has Better Weather

San Diego Zoo's weather is better than the climate at Safari Park

The San Diego Zoo has milder weather year around. Safari Park has greater temperature extremes because it’s located almost 20 miles from the ocean’s temperature moderating influence. That location is more likely to be hotter in the summertime. You can see it in the monthly temperature comparison graph below that I created using data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

San Diego Safari Park vs Zoo graph of average high temperatures by month.

San Diego Zoo’s Better For Toddlers

San Diego Zoo's better for toddlers than Safari Park

San Diego Zoo’s better if you’ve got toddlers. Don’t get me wrong, you can have a great time at Safari Park with your little tyke. But the Zoo’s MUCH better because:

  • Wildlife Explorer’s Basecamp is a kid’s paradise. I wrote an article at the link.
  • It’s smaller, there’s less ground to cover with tiny tot strides
  • The exhibits are closer together
  • Animals are a bit easier to see because the enclosures are smaller
  • The Zoo’s within Balboa Park. If your tot gets tired of all the animals, you can distract them with a train ride or a splash in a fountain.

For more details, I’ve covered all the pros & cons thoroughly on this page about “ San Diego Zoo vs Safari Park for Happier Toddlers (& You!) ”.

Safari Park’s Better for Babies & Infants

San Diego Safari Park is just a bit better for visiting with babies than the Zoo.

The Safari Park’s just a cheetah’s whisker better than the San Diego Zoo if you’re with a baby in a stroller . There are fewer steep hills to push a pram up. It’s more friendly for nursing moms because It’s a bit less crowded and there are many secluded benches where you can give your young one a quick snack. There is also a nursing station at Nairobi Village.

Safari Park Is A More Unique Experience

Safari Park is “different”. It’s not the usual zoo . You hear that time and again on forums and review sites. And I agree. Granted, the San Diego Zoo is a great zoo and I love spending time there. But at Safari Park the animals are in more natural, expansive settings. And because of that, you feel freer also. It’s weird but true.

visiting san diego zoo safari park

Safari Park’s less a destination and more of a journey. You are more active and engaged at Safari Park than at the Zoo. You can wander through kangaroo enclosures and a petting zoo to have closer animal encounters. You can sit and have lunch while you watch tigers.

Check out my page on what’s best to see and do at San Diego Zoo Safari Park for more information on activities, like riding a zipline, getting high in a balloon, or feeding giraffes and rhinos on a Caravan Safari. Some of the things you can experience at San Diego Safari Park cannot be duplicated except by hopping a plane to Africa.

San Diego Safari Park is definitely a more unique experience.

Closing Thoughts

San Diego Zoo is better for many people than Safari Park . This was a hard post for me to write because I very much prefer the Escondido preserve. I’ve done my best to present this listing of the major differences fairly. I hope that this article helps you make up your mind about whether San Diego Zoo or Safari Park is better for you to visit.

San Diego Zoo vs. Safari Park: Which Should You Visit?

visiting san diego zoo safari park

This post contains affiliate links. Read the full disclosure here .

On any trip to San Diego, the famous San Diego Zoo should definitely be on your San Diego itinerary. But with two world-class zoos in the area (both part of the San Diego Zoo), which zoo should you visit? Here we’ll look at all the differences between the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park to help you choose.

Honestly, if you have time in your San Diego itinerary , visit both! Both the Zoo and the Safari Park offer completely different experiences and we really loved our visit to both of them! (However, we did have a favorite…I’ll explain at the end.)

But if you’re trying to decide between the San Diego Zoo vs. San Diego Zoo Safari Park because you only have time for one zoo on your trip, here’s the comparison you need to help you make a decision.

Pro Tip: If you plan on visiting a lot of museums and attractions in San Diego, considering getting the San Diego Go City Pass! The All-Inclusive Pass includes both the San Diego Zoo and the Safari Park, or you can choose to visit one of the zoos with the Explorer Pass .

San Diego Zoo vs. Safari Park: Summary of Differences

Okay, we’re going to get into the all the details, but let’s take a quick look at the main differences of the two zoos. If you don’t have time for all the info, here’s what you need to know!

San Diego Zoo

  • Right in San Diego, making it easier to get to on a trip to San Diego.
  • More animal variety.
  • Generally sees more crowds.
  • Smaller zoo with more hills (but also in-park transportation).

San Diego Zoo Safari Park

  • About 30 minutes outside San Diego, so you would likely need to rent a car.
  • Focuses mostly on African animals, but also has Australian and Asian sections.
  • Generally sees smaller crowds.
  • Larger zoo with easier walking terrain.

San Diego Zoo vs. Safari Park: History + Mission

When comparing the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park , let’s take a look at their history first, because these two parks exist for entirely different reasons.

The San Diego Zoo began as a traditional zoo with animals that were left in San Diego after the 1915 Panama-California Exposition. Since then it has grown to a world-famous zoo, with all the traditional things you expect to see at a zoo.

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park was a natural offshoot of the San Diego Zoo that focuses on conservation. ( Note: both zoos focus on conservation, but it is an even bigger focus at the Safari Park.)

On our visit, we were talking to a Safari Park volunteer and she explained that the reason the Safari Park exists is because keepers noticed that animals weren’t breeding well in the cramped quarters of the San Diego Zoo. Moving animals out the Safari Park gave them the room they needed to feel comfortable breeding, and thus the Safari Park became an important part of the San Diego Zoo’s conservation mission.

San Diego Zoo vs. Safari Park: Location

Perhaps the biggest difference between the San Diego Zoo and the Safari Park is their location.

The San Diego Zoo is located near downtown San Diego in Balboa Park . This means it’s easy to visit the Zoo on a short San Diego trip, as it is central to probably everything else you’ll be doing.

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park, however is located about 30 minutes north of San Diego in Escondido. This means that it could be a little trickier for your family to make it up to the Safari Park.

If you are looking to stay close to central San Diego on your trip, then the San Diego Zoo is probably the right choice for you.

visiting san diego zoo safari park

San Diego Zoo vs. Safari Park: Size

Because of the different focuses of each zoo, their size differs greatly. The San Diego Zoo is 100 acres, while the Safari Park covers 1,800 acres.

It’s important to note though, that a lot of the Safari Park is dedicated free-roaming space for animals. So while the actual property of the Safari Park is bigger, the area guests will walk in is very similar in both parks.

Planning a trip to San Diego? Here’s our 3 Day San Diego Itinerary !

San Diego Zoo vs. Safari Park: Walking + Park Transportation

In both parks you’ll need to be prepared to walk. But the experience is going to be different in each park.

The San Diego Zoo is built into a canyon, which means there are A LOT of hills within the zoo (and it also means the way the space is used is very creative). This means there is some steep terrain you should be prepared for.

BUT the San Diego Zoo has also has some free transportation options to make this a little easier. There are several elevators throughout the park to help you get up and down to the different levels.

There is also a bus system called the Kangaroo Buses that you can hop on and off throughout the right side of the park.

And of course there is the Skyfari , which is an aerial tram that can take you back and forth between the front and the back of the park. (Plus, they are just fun to ride and give you great views of San Diego and Balboa Park!)

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is not quite as hilly (although there are some hills), which means the walking can be a little easier. But it also does not have the same in-park transportation options. There is an elevator in one area, but other than that you will need to walk pretty much everywhere you want to go.

San Diego Zoo vs. Safari Park: Animals

You may not realize it, but the animals between the San Diego Zoo and the Safari Park are vastly different!

Because the San Diego Zoo is a more traditional zoo experience, you will find a bigger variety of animals here. From lions and tigers and elephants to koalas and penguins and tortoises, the San Diego Zoo has almost every animal you might want to see.

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park, however, focuses more on African animals , with more limited selection of species. There are still lots of animals to see though! Giraffes, elephants, all kinds of gazelles, lions, and gorillas.

The Safari Park also has an Australian section with kangaroos and platypuses, and a Tiger Trail with tigers. (So don’t worry…it’s not JUST African animals.)

visiting san diego zoo safari park

Some notable animals you’ll find at the San Diego Zoo but NOT at the Safari Park:

  • Chimpanzees
  • Galapagos tortoise

Most of the animals you’ll find at the Safari Park you can also find at the San Diego Zoo, with the big exception of the platypus. Note that you can ONLY see the platypus at the Safari Park. In fact, the platypuses at the Safari Park are the ONLY platypuses anywhere in the world outside of Australia!

If there is a very specific animal you want to see on your zoo visit, be sure to check the website to see which zoo you might find it at.

San Diego Zoo vs. Safari Park: Included Experiences

First of all, you of course need admission to the park of your choosing. You can book tickets to the San Diego Zoo , the San Diego Safari Park , OR if you want to do both, you can book a 2-visit pass ticket which will allow you to visit both the zoo and the safari park on two separate days.

At both of the parks, your admission ticket will come with some included experiences.

At the San Diego Zoo you can take a free bus tour that will take you around most of the park and let you see the animals. (I definitely recommend doing this first thing in the morning, when the animals are most likely to be active!).

You can also ride the Skyfari for aerial views of the zoo for free.

Plus keeper talks and animal shows are also included. (Check the day’s schedule because what’s available is subject to change.)

The San Diego Zoo also has a new children’s zoo area called Wildlife Explorer’s Basecamp that opened in 2022.

At the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, the main free “extra” is going to be the Africa Tram . This 30 minute (ish) ride takes you back to some of the more open areas of the zoo to get closer to some of the African animals. It doesn’t get you as close as some of the paid safaris, but it’s definitely still must-do at the Safari Park that gives you a safari-esque experience.

And if you’re visiting with kids, the Safari Park has a carousel. It’s not free, but one $6 ticket will give you unlimited rides all day. And another plus with kids? The Safari Park has several small play areas that kids (and parents) will love.

San Diego Zoo vs. Safari Park: Paid Upgrades

If you are interested in paying to add to your zoo experience, both the Zoo and the Safari Park have extra options.

San Diego Zoo upgraded experiences include:

  • Inside Look Tours (you can choose different animal focuses)
  • Animals in Action (meet animal ambassadors)
  • VIP Experiences
  • Early Morning Cheetah Experience
  • Discovery Cart Tour (more private guided tour of the zoo)
  • Early Morning Explorers (early morning access to Wildlife Explorers Basecamp children’s zoo)
  • Wildlife Baby Boom

These experiences all require a ticket in addition to your zoo admission. Prices range from $34 to $92 per person, with the VIP experience being $700+ per person.

And as much as the San Diego Zoo offers, the Safari Park offers even MORE unique experiences :

  • Wildlife Safari
  • Behind the Scenes Safari
  • Cart Safari
  • Sun Up Cheetah Safari
  • Ultimate Safari
  • Roar & Snore Safari (you can actually camp overnight in the zoo!)
  • Flightline Safari (zip line)
  • Wildlife Trek

visiting san diego zoo safari park

Most Safaris are in the $90 range per person, while the overnight costs $155 and up and the Ultimate Safari is $700 and up per person. The extra paid experiences are a big draw to the Safari Park, and you might feel like you need to do one of them. But I promise you can have a great day here even without a paid upgrade! (We did!)

Whichever zoo you visit, be sure to look up details and buy any tickets for additional events before your visit!

San Diego Zoo vs. Safari Park: Which is Better?

Whether the San Diego Zoo or the Safari Park is better is obviously a completely objective opinion.

However, I will say that our favorite visit on our trip to San Diego was to the Safari Park. The San Diego Zoo is great, but the Safari Park really surprised us with how much we enjoyed it.

Reasons we loved the San Diego Zoo Safari Park? The beautiful wide open spaces, the lower crowds, and the unique animal experiences (like the platypus and getting to walk through the kangaroo enclosure).

But the more important question here is which park is right for you. Because while we love the Safari Park, if you just have time to visit one of the zoos you want to make the right decision for your family.

If you want to stay close to the city, see as many animals as you can, and check a world-famous zoo off your bucket list, then go to the San Diego Zoo.

If you want a different kind of zoo experience, want to avoid the more crowded and cramped zoo, and have time to drive to Escondido, then go to the Safari Park.

Either way though, you’ll have some awesome animal experiences and a fantastic time!

Ready to book your trip to the San Diego Zoo?

  • You can find tickets to the San Diego Zoo here .
  • Get Safari Park tickets here .
  • OR do both (honestly the best option if you have time!) and save money on a 2-visit pass ticket to both the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Safari Park!

Not only does San Diego boast near-perfect temperatures year round, a sweet spot balance of city life and outdoor activities, a multitude of entertainment options, and an incredible eclectic history, it’s also the epicenter of that much sought after laid-back SoCal vibe.

As my hometown, San Diego is near and dear to my heart and I know the city like the back of my hand. So, as an insider as your guide, here are my picks for the best ways to spend a romantic date in San Diego!

Things to Do in San Diego for Couples

Take a romantic walk in balboa park.

Just minutes from downtown, Balboa Park is the largest urban cultural park in North America and is home to seventeen unique museums, art installations, and a multitude of different events hosted throughout the year.

A few of my favorite museums here include: San Diego Museum of Art, San Diego Natural History Museum, and Museum of Photographic Arts (MoPA).

Sunset is a particularly romantic time to visit Balboa Park. Pack a picnic to end your day in a quiet area of the park while watching the sun go down.

Visit San Diego Zoo Safari Park

Spread across 1800 acres in the San Pasqual Valley, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the county. With Africa-themed exhibits, free-range enclosures, and over 2600 animals consisting of more than 300 species and over 3500 species of plants, this park is a great educational experience.

Purchase your ticket in advance here . And for a more unique experience that will impress your date, book a Wildlife Safari for up-close views of the wildlife.

To save money, I also highly recommend purchasing a Go City Pass if you're planning to visit multiple San Diego attractions during your visit.

Plan a Date Night in Gaslamp Quarter

Located in downtown San Diego, the Gaslamp Quarter is an entertainment district famous for its Victorian architecture, eclectic history, live theatre, music productions, world-class food, and array of nightlife options.

Take an Old Town Trolley Tour

The oldest settled area in San Diego as well as the first Spanish settlement on the West Coast, Old Town is one of my favorite places to go to soak up San Diego’s heritage. With museums displaying the story of the city, boutique shops, and plenty of historic sites, a visit to the Old Town is a great way to pay ode to the early days of San Diego.

This San Diego Hop On Hop Off Trolley Tour starts in Old Town and stops at many of San Diego's famous sights including the Gaslamp Quarter, San Diego Zoo, USS Midway Museum and the Cruise Ship Terminal, Little Italy, and more.

A small, lifeguard patrolled spot in La Jolla, La Jolla Cove is a must on your visit to San Diego. Featuring breathtaking sunsets, great conditions for swimming, snorkeling, taking a sea caves kayak tour , and even scuba diving, this picture-perfect cove will have you reaching for your camera in no time.

Spend the Afternoon in Point Loma

Point Loma is a rugged peninsula filled with trails, sea caves, coastal bluffs, lighthouses, tide pools, and cool exhibits on California history.

However, besides the aforementioned, Point Loma is famous for both the Cabrillo National Monument and the Women’s museum; the former commemorating the landing of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo at San Diego Bay, and the latter being a must-see museum dedicated to women’s history and art.

Watch the Sunset at Torrey Pines Gliderport

Located in La Jolla, the Torrey Pines Gliderport was established in 1930 and is a private use glider airport that was originally used as a soaring site. Today the gliderport is one of the top paragliding and hang gliding spots in the country.

I recommend taking your date for a sunset picnic along the cliffs for epic views of the gliders with the Pacific Ocean as the backdrop. For additional fun, just off to the side of the gliderport you’ll find Blacks Beach, a secluded section of beach that has one of the most powerful surf breaks in all of California.

Note that just about 100 yards south of the trailhead leading to the Gliderport begins the clothing optional section of Blacks Beach so, depending on what you’re into, you can make a beeline for it or steer clear.

Go Whale Watching

From blue whales to humpback whales, whale watching is one of my favorite things to do in San Diego! This 4.5 hour whale watching tour leaves from San Diego and it includes sodas and snacks. They have a whale sighting guarantee -- so if you don't see a whale, you get to come back for free!

In my opinion, a whale watching trip beats going to Seaworld San Diego any day (not to mention is a lot more ethical and kinder to the animals).

Hike Cedar Creek Falls

One of my favorite day trips from San Diego, Cedar Creek Falls (also known as Devil’s Punch Bowl) is an 80-foot tall waterfall that cascades into a glistening freshwater pool below.

In my experience, it’s best to head to the falls in the spring when the weather is warm enough and the pool depth is at its peak, and make sure you bring ample drinking water, the trek there can get strenuous.

Greener Pastures

By arwen neski, an unusual set of twins is duplicating hope for przewalski’s horses.

Tails swishing and necks bent, twin horses graze on soft, green grass in fields set a few hundred yards apart. These two live parallel lives here at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park , but they’re no ordinary set of twins. To start, they don’t share a mother, or even a birthday. And they’ve never met. In fact, the enigmatic duo was born two and a half years apart.

While the colts may seem like a puzzle, they’re actually one of today’s most exciting conservation solutions. Meet Kurt and Ollie—two Przewalski’s horses that represent the essential next step in securing the future for this endangered species.

Not only are Kurt and Ollie genetic twins, they’re clones. The first and second of their kind, their births are a conservation feat that’s been decades in the making. To understand their story, and the profound impact they will have on their species, we look back to where it all began, more than 40 years ago.

visiting san diego zoo safari park

Blazing a Trail

Przewalski’s horses were once widespread, roaming the vast, sweeping plains from northern Asia all the way to present day Portugal and Spain. But habitat loss and a changing climate forced them into areas they weren’t well adapted for, and populations plummeted. By the 1980s, they had disappeared from their native range, and the “last true wild horses” were declared extinct in the wild.

Although the situation was dire, all hope was not lost. A number of Przewalski’s horses remained safe in human care—including at the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park —and efforts to save the species were well underway.

Since the 1970s, we’ve collaborated with partners around the world on a groundbreaking conservation breeding program for Przewalski’s horses. Together, we’re helping populations recover, and have reestablished herds in their native habitats across the grasslands of China and Mongolia. These are remarkable conservation successes, and because of them, the species is no longer extinct in the wild. However, they remain endangered—and the work to save them isn’t over yet.

visiting san diego zoo safari park

Until recently, all living Przewalski’s horses were descended from just 12 individuals. Lack of genetic diversity is one of the greatest challenges today’s populations face, and addressing this threat is key to a sustainable and continued recovery for the species. With strong partnerships, innovative reproductive technologies, and the visionary foresight of conservation scientists, we’re finding solutions.

Thawing Hope

For decades, a safeguard for Przewalski’s horses has been carefully cryopreserved in our Wildlife Biodiversity Bank ’s Frozen Zoo® . Kept at an icy -320 degrees Fahrenheit, a cell line from a stallion who lived more than 40 years ago—and whose DNA was largely absent from the current population—has been frozen in time, awaiting its second life.

visiting san diego zoo safari park

Our teams, alongside partners ViaGen Pets & Equine and Revive & Restore, are unlocking this frozen potential to bring back lost genetic diversity through cloning. And now, that stallion has been cloned not once, but twice, resulting a set of twins like no other: Kurt and Ollie.

Two of a Kind

Kurt was born in August 2020—making history and headlines worldwide as the first-ever Przewalski’s horse clone . His existence is a dream fulfilled. When his namesake Dr. Kurt Benirschke founded the Frozen Zoo in the 1970s, it was with the hope that cryopreserved cells might somehow, one day, be used in conservation. Kurt the horse was named in honor of this biobanking pioneer, and is a testament to how much science has advanced in the decades since—and to the power of hope.

Last year, that hope was renewed, and history was made again when Ollie was born . His birth marks the first time cloning has produced more than one individual of an endangered species, and has proven that this technique is a viable tool for genetic rescue. Ollie was named in honor of Oliver “Ollie” Ryder, Ph.D., our Kleberg Endowed Director of Conservation Genetics—a longtime champion of Przewalski’s horse conservation, and one of the trailblazing scientists who have made the clones’ existence possible.

visiting san diego zoo safari park

Born to domestic horse surrogate mares, each clone carries the same vital genes that otherwise would have been lost to the world. Eventually, when they breed, they will pass on crucial DNA—creating a ripple effect that will help ensure the health and genetic viability of Przewalski’s horses for generations to come.

Until they mature into breeding stallions, the young clones will need to learn the language and behavior of their fellow Przewalski’s horses at the Safari Park. Since 2022, Kurt has been thriving with his horse “mentor,” a filly named Holly. Ollie will follow a similar path when he’s ready, joining other horses who will help him successfully integrate into the herd.

visiting san diego zoo safari park

These unusual twins are a double dose of hope for the future—both for Przewalski’s horses, and for all species that will benefit from these revolutionary genetic rescue techniques. With each historic birth and conservation milestone, we’re reminded that there is no limit to what we can achieve when we think outside the box and work together to save wildlife.

As an ally for wildlife, you make it all possible! Discover more about Przewalski’s horse conservation and visit the herd through select tours to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park ’s Central Asia savanna habitat.
