  • Trivia The frequent delays caused by COVID-19 ballooned the budget to $291 million, making it the most expensive Mission: Impossible film (surpassing Fallout, $178 million), the most expensive film of Tom Cruise 's career (again surpassing Fallout), and the most expensive film ever produced by Paramount (surpassing Transformers: The Last Knight (2017) , $217 million). The insurance company Chubb originally gave Paramount only £4.4 million (about $5.4 million) for the delays, arguing that the cast and crew could still fulfill their duties to the production despite being infected with COVID-19. Paramount sued Chubb in 2021, and the two companies settled in 2022. In 2023, Chubb gave Paramount a £57 million (about $71 million) payout for the COVID-caused delays, reducing the film's budget to about $220 million, which still makes it the most expensive film for Cruise, Paramount, and the franchise.
  • Goofs Steam trains, especially moving at high speeds, need to be continuously provided with fuel, in this case coal. With the engineers killed and the controls opened all the way, the locomotive would have gradually slowed down and come to a halt as the pressure in the boiler dropped. That train would never have reached the bridge for that distance with no coal provided. Since the early 1900s, when firebox coal consumption exceeded the efforts of two men, the trains have used mechanical stokers. The coal would continue feeding without one missing coal shoveler.

Tom Cruise, Alejandro González Iñárritu

Tom Cruise will star in the new feature from The Revenant filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment are in talks to acquire the package, which marks Iñárritu’s first English-language film since the Leonardo DiCaprio starrer The Revenant nearly a decade ago.

Iñárritu last directed the Spanish-language Netflix drama Bardo . Prior to this, the director was in theaters with The Revenant , which earned over $500 million at the global box office and landed him the best director Oscar. This followed his 2015 best picture, director and original wins for Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) .

Cruise has been nominated twice for best actor, in Oliver Stone’s Born on the Fourth of July (1990) and Cameron Crowe’s Jerry Maguire (1997), and once for supporting actor in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia (2000). Iñárritu directed DiCaprio to Oscar gold in The Revenant and helped Michael Keaton land a best actor nom for Birdman . The pairing of Cruise and the filmmaker is sure to raise the notion that the actor is hoping for a prestige play.

Warners, meanwhile, has been beefing up its roster of features with top talent in recent months, locking down Ryan Coogler’s next feature and greenlighting a Paul Thomas Anderson movie with Leonardo DiCaprio attached to star. Legendary and Warners are out in theaters next weekend with Dune 2 , the sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic.

Deadline first reported the news of the project.

Review: Tom Cruise is out to save the movies. Is ‘Mission: Impossible 7’ enough?

It begins with a plunge into the icy deep, where a submarine is menaced by an invisible threat — a scene that induces shivery memories of “The Hunt for Red October” and “Das Boot” (and also triggers inevitable thoughts of a certain ill-fated submersible ). Then it shifts to a hot orange desert, billed as Arabia though it might as well be Arrakis , where a dust-storm pursuit gives way to some tricky sleight-of-sand. Ludicrously entertaining and even more ludicrously titled, “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One” doesn’t just rack up the miles in style. Like so many globe-trotting thrillers and big-screen tourist brochures, it’s also a gleaming advertisement for Hollywood itself, a celebration and a reminder of how profoundly the movies have shaped our views of the world.

The task of saving that world once again falls to Ethan Hunt, a.k.a. Tom Cruise — and if the world can’t be saved, well, maybe at least the movies can. Or can they? Even if not, just try and stop Cruise, now 61, from taking the weight of the entire industry on his shoulders. His gargantuan cine-savior complex was apparent back in 2020, when he railed against COVID protocol violators on the U.K. set of “Dead Reckoning Part One,” captured in an audio recording that did not exactly self-destruct in five seconds. If the rant was overblown, this actor-producer is hardly alone in having bought into his own mythos: Earlier this year, Cruise was praised by none other than Steven Spielberg for having single-handedly “saved Hollywood’s ass” with the stunning success of “Top Gun: Maverick.”

Now, on the eve of this seventh “M:I” caper’s release, Cruise is playing the familiar role of the exhibitors’ evangelist, urging audiences on social media to seek out some of the summer’s biggest titles ( “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer”) in theaters. The cross-studio solidarity is touching; it also reflects some of the industry’s deep existential anxieties around moviemaking and moviegoing. No single picture, no matter how successful, is going to lay those anxieties to rest, though “Dead Reckoning Part One,” with its queasily apocalyptic stakes and enjoyably kinked-up plot, at least seems to be in conversation with some of the underlying issues. Is it a coincidence that this time around, the movie’s big bad villain is artificial intelligence?

A man and a woman hang precariously inside a falling train car.

That would be something called the “Entity” — no, not the horror-movie incubus that menaced Barbara Hershey back in 1982, but rather a frighteningly self-aware robo-weapon powerful enough to bring data systems, economies and entire nations to their knees. Ethan and his loyal Impossible Mission Force gizmo experts, Luther (Ving Rhames) and Benji (Simon Pegg), are tasked with neutralizing this threat before it falls into the hands of the wrong country — which, as the movie cynically asserts, pretty much means any country. Fortunately, the Entity hasn’t reached Skynet levels of techno-malevolence yet; presumably that’s still to come in “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part Two,” due out in theaters next year. For now, AI proves a frustratingly elusive phantom, one that acts primarily through a powerful human emissary, more devilish than angelic, named Gabriel (Esai Morales).

Flashbacks shed light on Gabriel and Ethan’s ugly, not always compelling history, which involves a confrontation, a betrayal and, surprise surprise, a beautiful dead woman. She’s a throwback to the many beautiful dead women from Ethan’s past, including three of his doomed IMF colleagues (played by Kristin Scott Thomas, Ingeborga Dapkūnaitė and Emmanuelle Béart) from the Brian De Palma-directed first “Mission: Impossible” feature (1996). Christopher McQuarrie, who directed the series’ two previous movies ( “Rogue Nation” and “Fallout” ) as well as both halves of “Dead Reckoning,” has a more restrained, less operatic visual style than De Palma (which could be said of most filmmakers). But in many respects he’s paying tribute to that 1996 caper, not only by staging a doozy of a runaway-train sequence, but also by reintroducing Ethan’s old IMF nemesis Eugene Kittridge, played once again by a banally sinister Henry Czerny.

Kittridge’s return can’t help but serve as a marker of how far Ethan, Cruise himself and this ever-durable series have come over nearly 30 years. It also suggests that the IMF, the utterly vital, eternally disavowable, brutally underloved bastard child of American intelligence, may not survive this latest and severest test of its abilities and resources. The “Dead” in the movie’s title certainly doesn’t bode well for anyone on-screen; neither does Ethan’s unnerving habit of reminding his closest colleagues that their survival means more to him than his own life. The sentiment may be cheesy, to the point where you half expect Ethan to pull off his latex mask and reveal Vin Diesel underneath. But it also reminds you that the “Mission: Impossible” movie franchise began with Ethan being framed for his teammates’ coolly premeditated murders, a formative trauma that he has never fully shaken off.

A gray-haired man and a woman share an anxious moment

For the record:

10:50 a.m. July 5, 2023 An earlier version of this review said Tom Cruise’s character maneuvered a yellow Beetle through the streets of Rome in one scene. It was a yellow Fiat.

It’s enough to make you fear for Ethan’s closest allies, among them Luther, Benji and the always-on-the-run Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), all of whom are put in varying degrees of escalating danger as the typically serpentine narrative leaps from one spectacular piece of on-location fight choreography to the next. Notably, Ethan also finds himself a new sparring partner named Grace (a terrific Hayley Atwell), a wily thief who first pops up during an undercover operation at the Abu Dhabi airport before taking Ethan on a harrowing, sometimes hilarious ride (by yellow Fiat) through the streets of Rome. That Italian escapade soon leads to another in spooky nighttime Venice, where, in tight alleys and on haunted canals, the combat takes on a murderous close-quarters intimacy.

The quality of the action here is, for the most part, more fluid and satisfying than jaw-dropping; there’s nothing here to rival De Palma’s snazziest set pieces, or Ethan’s vertiginous climb up the walls of the Burj Khalifa in “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol” (2011), or his men’s room demolition derby in 2018’s “Fallout.” But McQuarrie’s typically fastidious writing (undertaken this time with Erik Jendresen) makes up for whatever his direction may lack in sheer verve. And he does pull off one major cinematic coup: a triumphantly visceral, spatially disorienting, pull-out-the-stops ripsnorter of a climax that seems designed to ensure that no one dares set a movie aboard the Orient Express ever again, for fear of inviting unfavorable comparisons.

There’s more to the story, of course, which, though relatively fleeting at 163 minutes, feels generously overstuffed for a first-parter. I haven’t yet mentioned Pom Klementieff’s role as Paris, a lethally lithe newcomer of mysterious motives, killer threads and very few words. Or Vanessa Kirby, who, reprising her “Fallout” role as a ruthless arms dealer, has only to sit in a train car with a smartphone to deliver the movie’s single most impressive performance.

Maybe that’s unfair to Cruise, who once again suffers for our pleasure like no one else, hurling himself and his motorcycle from great heights, fighting in claustrophobically tight spaces and, yes, running and running and running some more. For all that, he knows how to temper his usual superhuman self-seriousness with lightness and wit. He’s even gracious enough to cede some of the spotlight to his co-stars this time around, spending a fair chunk of the movie’s endgame amusingly on the sidelines. He returns for the big-bang finish, of course, in a spirit of goofy optimism and eternal vigilance. “Dead Reckoning Part One” ends on his watch, but the movies will not.

‘Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One’ Review: Still Running

In this franchise’s seventh entry, Tom Cruise’s mission includes increasingly improbable leaps, chases and stunts. Luckily for us, he chooses to accept it.

In a film scene, a man in a shirt, tie and vest with no suit jacket is handcuffed to a woman in a button-down shirt. A car is behind them in an alley.

By Manohla Dargis

I don’t know if anyone has ever clocked whether Tom Cruise is faster than a speeding bullet. The guy has legs, and guts. His sprints into the near-void have defined and sustained his stardom, becoming his singular superpower. He racks up more miles in “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One,” the seventh entry in a 27-year-old franchise that repeatedly affirms a movie truism. That is, there are few sights more cinematic than a human being outracing danger and even death onscreen — it’s the ultimate wish fulfillment!

Much remains the same in this latest adventure, including the series’ reliable entertainment quotient and Cruise’s stamina. Once again, he plays Ethan Hunt, the leader of a hush-hush American spy agency, the Impossible Mission Force. Alongside a rotating roster of beautiful kick-ass women (most recently Rebecca Ferguson and Vanessa Kirby) and loyal handymen (Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames), Ethan has been sprinting, flying, diving and speed-racing across the globe while battling enemy agents, rogue operatives, garden-variety terrorists and armies of minions. Along the way, he has regularly delivered a number of stomach-churning wows, like jumping out a window and climbing the world’s tallest building .

This time, the villain is the very au courant artificial intelligence, here called the Entity. The whole thing is complicated, as these stories tend to be, with stakes as catastrophic as recent news headlines have trumpeted. Or, as an open letter signed by 350 A.I. authorities put it last month: “Mitigating the risk of extinction from A.I. should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks, such as pandemics and nuclear war.” In the face of such calamity, who you gonna call? Analog Man, that’s who, a.k.a. Mr. Hunt, who receives his usual mysterious directives that, this time, have been recorded on a cassette tape, an amusing touch for a movie about the threat poised to the material world by a godlike digital power.

That’s all fine and good, even if the most memorable villain proves to be a Harley Quinn-esque agent of chaos, Paris (Pom Klementieff), who races after Ethan in a Hummer and seems ready to spin off into her own franchise. She tries flattening him during a seamlessly choreographed chase sequence in Rome — the stunt coordinator, Wade Eastwood, is also a racecar driver — that mixes excellent wheel skills with scares, laughs, thoughtful geometry and precision timing. At one point, Ethan ends up behind the wheel while handcuffed to a new love interest, Grace (Hayley Atwell, another welcome addition), driving and drifting, flirting and burning rubber in what is effectively the action-movie equivalent of a sex scene.

Despite the new faces, there are, unsurprisingly, no real surprises in “Dead Reckoning Part One,” which features a number of dependably showstopping stunts, hits every narrative beat hard and, shrewdly, has just enough winking humor to keep the whole thing from sagging into self-seriousness. This is the third movie in the series that Cruise and the director Christopher McQuarrie have made together, and they have settled into a mutually beneficial groove. On his end, McQuarrie has assembled a fully loaded blockbuster machine that briskly recaps the series’ foundational parameters, adds the requisite twists and, most importantly, showcases his star. For his part, Cruise has once again cranked the superspy dial up to 11.

Over the years, McQuarrie has loosened up the star, who generally seems to be having a pretty good time. Still, it must be exhausting to be Tom Cruise, who famously performs his own stunts. A smattering of creases now radiate around his smile, but time doesn’t seem to have slowed his relentless roll. The most arresting set piece here finds Ethan smoothly sailing off a cliff via a motorbike and a parachute. Improbable, yes? Impossible? Nah. Like the other large-scale, stunt-driven sequences, this showy leap at once underscores Cruise’s skills and reminds you that a real person in a real location on a real motorbike did this lunatic stunt.

Nothing if not a classicist, Ethan also goes one to one with a baddie (Esai Morales) atop a speeding train, perhaps in homage to his cliffhanger moves on another train in the first “ Mission: Impossible ” (1996). In his review, the New York Times critic Stephen Holden observed that with this film Cruise had “found the perfect superhero character.” It’s worth noting that, in 1996, the top 10 movies released in the United States were largely high-concept thrillers and comedies; in 2022, half the top 10 releases were from Marvel or DC. Yet the film that connected most strongly with audiences was Cruise’s “Top Gun: Maverick.”

Although “Maverick” featured plenty of digital whiz-bangery, its most spectacular draw of course was Cruise, who has also remained the single greatest attraction in the “Mission” movies. To that point, while there’s little of substance that I remember about the first film other than it was directed by Brian De Palma, I can vividly picture — with the crystalline recall that only some movies instill — two distinct images of Cruise-Ethan from it. In one, he races away from a tsunami of water and shattered glass; in the second, he hovers inches above a gleaming white floor, his black-clad body stretched head to toe in a near-perfect horizontal line. The filmmakers imprinted those images on my memory; so did Cruise.

Early in the “Mission: Impossible” series, the outlandishness of the movies’ plots and Cruise’s equally fantastical stunts started to make him seem less than human. By the second movie, I wondered if he were disappearing altogether, turning himself into little more than a special effect. Since then, the plots and the stunts have remained impossibly absurd, sometimes enjoyably so, as here. Yet over the years, the series has unexpectedly made Cruise seem more poignantly human than he has sometimes seemed elsewhere. One reason is that the “Mission” movies were instrumental in shifting the locus of his star persona from his easygoing smile — the toothy gleam of “Risky Business” and “Jerry Maguire” — to his hardworking body.

The obvious effort that Cruise puts into his “Mission” stunts and the physical punishment he endures to execute them — signaled by his grimaces and popping muscles — have had a salutary impact on that persona, as has the naked ferocity with which he’s held onto stardom. It’s touching. It’s also difficult to imagine any actor today starting out in a superhero flick reaching a commensurate fame, not only because the movies, Hollywood’s at least, no longer retain the hold on the popular imagination that they once did, but also because the corporately branded superhero suit will always be more important than whoever wears it. Tom Cruise doesn’t need a suit; he was, after all, built for speed. He just needs to keep running.

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One Rated PG-13 for thriller violence. Running time: 2 hours 43 minutes. In theaters.

This project is being treated as top secret, with no plot details available other than it being a new original story written by Iñárritu. What is known is that the Oscar-winning director has been taking meetings with a select few actors in recent weeks, with Cruise being one of the first. The A-list star has been hungry to find that next project and moved quickly to get a meeting with Iñárritu once he was made aware the director was moving forward with his next big studio film. As soon as the meeting finished, Cruise was on board.

The project fits in with what Cruise, Warner Bros. The film would mark Inarritu’s first major studio film since directing The Revenant, which not only went on to gross more then $500 million at the worldwide box office but also led to his second straight Best Director Oscar win (and Leonardo DiCaprio’s first win for acting). Iñárritu took a break after an exhausting stretch that also included directing his Best Picture winner Birdman . He had been toying with some ideas in 2019 but ultimately turned his attentions to his passion project Bardo at Netflix and tabled his next big studio pic till now.

Cruise and Iñárritu are repped by CAA.

Movie Reviews

'top gun: maverick' is ridiculous. it's also ridiculously entertaining.

Justin Chang

Tom Cruise is back as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick. Scott Garfield/Paramount Pictures Corporation hide caption

Tom Cruise is back as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick.

In one of the more memorable lines in the original Top Gun , Maverick gets chewed out by a superior who tells him, "Son, your ego's writing checks your body can't cash."

Sometimes I wonder if Tom Cruise took that putdown as a personal challenge. No movie star seems to work harder or push himself further than Cruise these days. He just keeps going and going, whether he's scaling skyscrapers in a new Mission: Impossible adventure or showing a bunch of fresh-faced pilots how it's done in the ridiculous and ridiculously entertaining Top Gun: Maverick .

'Top Gun 2' Means One More Ride Into The Danger Zone

The Two-Way

'top gun 2' means one more ride into the danger zone.

Sorry, Tom Cruise Fans — New 'Top Gun' And 'Mission Impossible' Movies Delayed Again

Coronavirus Updates

Sorry, tom cruise fans — new 'top gun' and 'mission impossible' movies delayed again.

Cruise was in his early 20s when he first played Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, the cocky young Navy pilot with the aviator sunglasses, the Kawasaki motorcycle and the need for speed. In the sequel, he's as arrogant and insubordinate as ever: Now a Navy test pilot in his late 50s, Maverick still knows how to tick off his superiors, as we see in an exciting opening sequence where he pushes a new plane beyond its limits. Partly as punishment, he's ordered to return to TOPGUN, the elite pilot-training school, and train its best and brightest for an impossibly dangerous new mission.

One of his trainees is a hotheaded young pilot called Rooster, played by Miles Teller. Rooster is the son of Maverick's beloved wingman, Goose, who tragically died while flying with Maverick in the first Top Gun . Maverick's lingering guilt over Goose's death affects his relationship with Rooster; so does his desire to protect Rooster from harm, which generates some suspense over whether he'll end up choosing the young man for the assignment.

And so the three screenwriters of Top Gun: Maverick — including Cruise's regular Mission: Impossible writer-director, Christopher McQuarrie — have taken the threads of the original and spun them into an intergenerational male weepie, a dad movie of truly epic proportions. They're tapping into nostalgia for the original, while aiming for new levels of emotional grandeur. To that end, the soundtrack features a Lady Gaga song, "Hold My Hand." It's nowhere near as iconic a chart topper as the original movie's "Take My Breath Away," but tugs at your heartstrings nonetheless.

Much of the plot is unabashedly derivative of the first Top Gun . Once again, Maverick runs afoul of growling authority figures, here played by Ed Harris and Jon Hamm . Cruise's former co-star Kelly McGillis is nowhere to be seen, but Maverick does get another perfunctory love interest, a bartender named Penny, nicely played by Jennifer Connelly despite the thanklessness of the role.

Lady Gaga, 'Hold My Hand'

#NowPlaying

Lady gaga, 'hold my hand'.

What's interesting about Top Gun: Maverick is how it isn't like its predecessor, mostly in terms of style. The first Top Gun , directed on a relatively low budget by the late Tony Scott , combined the aesthetics of a military recruitment video with some of the ripest homoerotic imagery ever seen in a major Hollywood movie. For better or worse, the sequel, directed by Joseph Kosinski of Tron: Legacy and Oblivion , is a much tamer, slicker, classier affair. Maverick no longer struts around in towels and tighty-whities, though he can still fly a plane like nobody's business.

The action sequences are much more thrilling and immersive than in the original. You feel like you're really in the cockpit with these pilots, and that's because you are: The actors underwent intense flight training and flew actual planes during shooting. In that respect, Top Gun: Maverick feels like a throwback to a lost era of practical moviemaking, before computer-generated visual effects took over Hollywood. You start to understand why Cruise, the creative force behind the movie, was so driven to make it: In telling a story where older and younger pilots butt heads, and state-of-the-art F-18s duke it out with rusty old F-14s, he's trying to show us that there's room for the old and the new to coexist. He's also advancing a case for the enduring appeal of the movies and their power to transport us with viscerally gripping action and big, sweeping emotions.

Which brings us to the movie's most powerful scene, in which Val Kilmer briefly reprises his role as Iceman, Maverick's former nemesis-turned-friend. Kilmer is, in some respects, Cruise's opposite: a onetime star whose career never quite found its groove, and who's been beset by health issues in recent years, including the loss of his voice due to throat cancer. His soulful presence here gives this high-flying melodrama the grounding it needs. Cruise may be this movie's immortal star, but it's Kilmer's aching performance that takes your breath away.

Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise is still preparing to boldly go where no actor has gone before.

He and his “Edge of Tomorrow” director Doug Liman are set to film a movie in space and make Cruise the first civilian to perform a spacewalk. Universal is backing the film, which has a budget of around $200 million.

When asked about his space-set movie at the “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” premiere in New York on Monday, Cruise said he didn’t have a production start date set, but, “We’ve been working on it diligently and we’ll see where we go.”

“We finish this tour, and on our way back to the U.K. we stop to scout along the way. We hit the ground running as soon as we get back,” McQuarrie told Variety . “I get two days of vacation between here and Tokyo and I’m back on.”

The latest “Mission: Impossible” film, which opens in theaters Wednesday, pits Cruise’s IMF agent Ethan Hunt against a mysterious villain from his past, and reunites him with allies Benji Dunn ( Simon Pegg ), Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) and Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson).

But the greatest draw of any “Mission: Impossible” movie is, of course, the stunts, and “Dead Reckoning Part One” doesn’t disappoint. In the film, Cruise drives a motorcycle off a massive cliff and parachutes safely down to the ground. When asked about that morning on set, Cruise said it was just a “usual day.”

“I keep things pretty calm, nothing unusual. The usual day for me,” he told Variety . “We wake up, and I remember that morning McQuarrie and I came to set, and normally we’re talking about story and the characters, just keep it real casual — as casual as possible. We know what’s happening. I remember getting there in the morning and the ramp was ice. You can see in the EPK as I’m jumping out of the helicopter to test the wind down there, they’re cleaning the ramp of ice. You just go through it nice and easy, no changes.”

“I’m very driven, I am ambitious, I care deeply about my job, but I don’t have cinema itself on my shoulders,” Pegg told Variety . “I feel like Tom, particularly during the making of this movie, felt like that. I felt like he was facing an existential crisis in the form of the pandemic, and he just wouldn’t be cared by it. I don’t know if I have it in me to do what he does, I literally don’t. There’s a reason why he’s the only one who does this stuff. There isn’t an actor working who does what he does.”

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One: release date, reviews, trailer and everything we know about the Tom Cruise movie

What crazy stunts will Tom Cruise pull off in the latest Mission: Impossible movie?

Hayley Atwell and Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt is back to save the world once again in Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One , the seventh entry in the long-running franchise. Mission: Impossible movies date back to 1996 and are defined by Cruise and the incredible stunts he performs — the wire hanging scene, climbing the Burj Khalifa, doing a HALO skydive and clinging to the outside of a plane as it takes off being some of the most memorable.

Even as Tom Cruise approaches 60, the Mission: Impossible movies seemingly get better as they go along. The last entry, Mission: Impossible — Fallout , is the highest rated in the franchise on Rotten Tomatoes (97% "Fresh") and had the best box office of any of the previous movies ($791 million worldwide).

So how will Cruise raise the stakes in this new entry to the action franchise? Here's everything we know about Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One .

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One release date

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One officially arrives in movie theaters on Wednesday, July 12 in the US and two days earlier in the UK on July 10.

The release of the seventh Mission: Impossible movie is a long time coming. Mission: Impossible — Fallout was released in 2018 and the hope was that the next movie would follow quickly on its heels with a July 2020 release. However, in the early days of the pandemic it was moved from that July 2020 date to December 2020, only for it to be moved again to November 19, 2021, then to May 27, 2022, and then again to Sept. 30, 2022, before it was finally shifted to its 2023 summer blockbuster date.

Part of the reason for the delays was the challenges of doing production during the pandemic. Production was shut down multiple times, first at the beginning of the pandemic and then again in 2021 when there were cases among the crew . At one point during production, Cruise was captured on audio criticizing crew members for not following COVID safety protocols.

With the new date for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One , the shift impacts Mission: Impossible 8 (which is being filmed back-to-back with to movie number seven and will presumably be called Dead Reckoning Part Two ), moving from its previous date of July 7, 2023 to June 28, 2024.

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One trailer

An all new trailer for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One is now available, previewing two new big stunts in a franchise known for them and giving video games fans " Uncharted 2 vibes ." Take a look right here:

While not a trailer, footage that was shown from the 2022 CinemaCon event has been shared online. In it Tom Cruise is standing on a biplane over a gorgeous backdrop. Is there anything this man won't do for a cool looking stunt?

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One plot

Even though we're just about four months away from the movie's release, there is almost no information on what the plot of Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One is going to be. But we can assume that Ethan Hunt and his IMF team will have to race against the clock to save the world from some kind of imminent destruction (after all, if it ain't broke).

While specific plot details are being kept secret, we have gotten some inklings on what stunts Tom Cruise will be performing for audiences’ enjoyment. A behind-the-scenes look at what Cruise and company have described as his most dangerous stunt came out in December 2022.

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One cast

Tom Cruise has been at the center of the Mission: Impossible franchise since the very beginning as IMF (Impossible Mission Force) agent Ethan Hunt. It has become one of the actor's most iconic roles in a career that also includes movies like Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick ), Risky Business and Jerry Maguire .

While there were originally thoughts Cruise would hand the franchise off to Jeremy Renner after the latter was introduced in Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol , Cruise remains a constant and the driving force behind the movies (Renner left the franchise after Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation ). However, Mission: Impossible has built up a team to go along with Cruise over its last few movies.

The IMF team that supports Cruise's Ethan Hunt is led by Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell (around since Mission: Impossible ), Simon Pegg's Benji Dunn (around since Mission: Impossible III ) and Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust (around since Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation ).

There are also some tenuous allies from past movies that will be returning for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One , including Vanessa Kirby's White Widow and Angela Bassett's Erika Sloane, both of whom debuted in Mission: Impossible — Fallout. There's also Henry Czerny, who played Eugene Kittridge in the original Mission: Impossible .

Making their Mission: Impossible debuts with this seventh entry are going to be Hayley Atwell ( Agent Carter , Captain America: The First Avenger ), Cary Elwes ( The Princess Bride , Stranger Things ), Pom Klementieff ( Guardians of the Galaxy ), Rob Delaney ( Home Sweet Home Alone , Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw ), Indira Varma ( Game of Thrones, Obi-Wan Kenobi ), Charles Parnell ( The Last Ship , Top Gun: Maverick ), Shea Whigham ( Boardwalk Empire , Perry Mason ) and Mark Gatiss ( Sherlock , The Favourite ).

On March 10, director Christopher McQuarrie also announced via Instagram that Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham is joining the franchise in an unspecified role.

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One reviews

The reviews are in for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One , and they are some of the best of the summer. In WTW's Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One review , our reviewed called it one of the most thrilling rides in the franchise.

Other critics were pretty laudatory as well, as the movie quickly became "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes and as of July 5 has a 98% score.

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One director

Mission: Impossible went through four different directors with the first four movies of the franchise, including Brian De Palma, John Woo, JJ Abrams and Brad Bird. However, since Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation , the franchise has been shepherded by Christopher McQuarrie, who is once again serving as director for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One (and Mission: Impossible 8 ).

The Mission: Impossible movies have been McQuarrie's calling card as a director, though he had previously directed Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher (2012). Prior to taking over as a director, McQuarrie was best known as a writer, having penned The Usual Suspects and other Tom Cruise movies like Valkyrie , Jack Reacher and Edge of Tomorrow . McQuarrie has also written all of the Mission: Impossible movies that he has directed.

Tom Cruise is back for another round of defying death in the new trailer for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part 1 . The trailer debuted on Wednesday and gives us glimpses of Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, and Vanessa Kirby, who will all be back this time around. Dead Reckoning Part 1 is set to arrive in theaters on July 12.

This trailer doesn’t give too much more of the plot away, instead bringing us back to some of the stunts we’ve seen before, including a massive train wreck and Tom Cruise falling/jumping off of at least two different cliffs. According to the official plot synopsis, Cruise’s Ethan Hunt and the IMF crew are tasked with “track[ing] down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity before it falls into the wrong hands.”

Just like the previous trailer, this one hinges on the return of Kittridge (Henry Czerny), a character from the 1996 Mission: Impossible movie who is back to warn Ethan about the gravity of his choices and the consequences of his actions. Beyond that, most of the dialogue is a reminder that this is the beginning of the end for this franchise, including a few teases that someone’s life might have to be sacrificed to complete the mission. The trailer also gives brief shots of Hayley Atwell and Pom Klementieff, who are joining the franchise for the first time in this movie.

Rounding out the cast are Esai Morales, Mariela Garriga, Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan Davis, Charles Parnell, Frederick Schmidt, Cary Elwes, Mark Gatiss, Indira Varma, and Rob Delaney.

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning is set to be the grand finale of the Mission: Impossible series — or at least the Tom Cruise version of it. The finale is broken into two parts, with Dead Reckoning Part 2 set to follow in 2024. Both films are directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who has helmed every entry in the series since Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation . McQuarrie also wrote Part 1 and co-wrote Part 2 with Erik Jendresen ( Band of Brothers ).

Tom Cruise: All New Movies Coming Out in 2023 and 2024

Naman Shrestha of Tom Cruise: All New Movies Coming Out in 2023 and 2024

After his breakthrough with leading roles in ‘Risky Business’ and ‘ Top Gun ‘ in the 1980s, Thomas “Tom” Cruise Mapother IV started bagging pivotal roles in several dramas, including ‘ Born on the Fourth of July ,’ for which he even won a Golden Globe Award and got nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor. In the 1990s, he rose to newer heights of stardom by featuring in various commercially successful films, such as ‘ A Few Good Men ,’ ‘ Interview with the Vampire ,’ ‘The Firm,’ and ‘ Jerry Maguire .’

Once he impacted dramas, he started traversing the action and sci-fi genres. By landing some iconic roles in the ‘ Mission: Impossible ‘ film series, ‘ Collateral ,’ ‘ Edge of Tomorrow ,’ and ‘ Top Gun: Maverick ,’ he established himself as an action star, performing most of the risky stunts on his own. The winner of three Golden Globe Awards, four nominations for the Oscars, and an Honorary Palme d’Or, Tom Cruise is known to be one of the world’s highest-paid actors. Given his immense popularity and fandom, most of our readers are looking forward to his future projects. Here is a list of all the upcoming movies and TV shows of Tom Cruise!

1. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two (2024)

Tom Cruise recently jumped off a cliff on a motorbike for ‘ Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One ‘ and he will be in action soon enough in its sequel, ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two.’ Helmed by Christopher McQuarrie, the spy action movie is the eighth installment in the ‘Mission: Impossible’ film series with Cruise reprising his role as Ethan Hunt for the eighth time running.

the new tom cruise film

Although the plot details are kept under wraps, the action-adventure film is most likely to resume Ethan’s hunt for The Entity as he meets some new friends and foes along the way. The production for the sequel began in March 2022 but is yet to be finished due to the delay caused by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Having gone through several postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic when it comes to its release date, it is now officially set to be released on June 28, 2024. But it is very much possible that it will get postponed again due to the pause in production.

2. Untitled Tom Cruise/SpaceX Project (TBA)

the new tom cruise film

Tom Cruise is set to take his status as an action star to the next level by traveling out of Earth to film the first ever Hollywood motion picture in outer space. In May 2020, it was reported that Elon Musk’s Space X and Cruise were working on an action-adventure project with NASA. Not only is Cruise expected to be blasted into space alongside filmmaker Doug Liman, with whom he has previously worked in ‘ American Made ‘ and ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ for the upcoming film, but he will also live up to his reputation by attempting to do a space walk outside of the International Space Station. In this movie, Cruise is set to essay the role of a down-on-his-luck man who is the sole person in the position to save Earth. Apart from starring in the film, he is attached to the project as a writer as well as a producer.

3. Live Die Repeat and Repeat (TBA)

A sequel to the 2014 movie ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ ‘Live Die Repeat and Repeat’ is an upcoming science fiction film that will reportedly reunite Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman, with the former set to reprise his role as Major William Cage. Moreover, Emily Blunt is also rumored to portray Rita again, alongside Cruise. Ever since the release of the hit original film, talks of a sequel have been flying around. However, in 2019, it was finally set in motion when Matthew Robinson was brought on to write the script.

Fast forward to a couple of years later, in a May 2021 interview with Entertainment Weekly , Emily Blunt revealed, “That was an amazing script, but I just don’t know what the future holds for it. I did read a script that was in really great shape, but it’s just a matter of if that can even happen now. I don’t have the straight answer on that one.” With the project still lingering in the development stage, it is hard to expect it to be brought to life in at least a couple of years.

Upcoming Tom Cruise Movies: Top Gun: Maverick, Mission Impossible 7 And More

Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick

Tom Cruise , despite his age, remains one of the biggest action stars in Hollywood, and oddly enough, the hard-to-believe yet mostly practical stunts that he pulls off time and time again are only getting crazier. Cruise, who most recently starred in the 2018’s Mission:Impossible Fallout and actor proved that even in his mid 50s, he's still one of the top action stars around. We're always up for a good Tom Cruise movie, and honestly, everything else the actor has coming up — Top Gun: Maverick and Mission: Impossible 7 , namely — looks pretty damn good too.

Most of Tom Cruise’s movies have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic closing down film and television productions around the world and audiences’ reluctance to return to movie theaters, the veteran actor-turned-stuntman has a lot for us to look forward to here in the next year or so. While a couple of them are the requisite sequels that come with success, several others are wholly original projects, like the one that will reportedly take Cruise to space. All that being said, we're looking forward to simply learning more about many of these, never mind actually seeing the finished product, so here are some upcoming movies from one of the most notable, and hardworking, figures in Hollywood.

Top Gun: Maverick - May 27, 2022

The idea that there might, one day, be a sequel to Top Gun has been one of those development ideas that hasn't died since the first movie came out in the mid-1980s. However, now we know that after all the talk, the movie is actually happening, but just not as soon as everyone had originally hoped. The title is Top Gun : Maverick and it will follow Cruise's Pete “Maverick” Mitchell as an instructor at the flight school where he finds himself working with Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw ( Miles Teller ), the son of his former partner Goose. In addition to finding himself in the middle of a dangerous mission that could end in tragedy, Maverick is forced to confront his past, most notably the death of his best friend and wingman all those years ago.

This version of Top Gun: Maverick has been in the works since 2010, when Paramount pictures approached producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Tony Scott about making a sequel to the 1986 action blockbuster, according to New York Magazine . There wasn’t much traction with the project until 2017 when Deadline revealed that Top Gun: Maverick would see the return of Tom Cruise’s iconic fighter pilot, this time being directed by Joseph Kosinski, the director of Tron Legacy and Oblivion . Originally set for a July 2019 release, the Top Gun sequel has been delayed multiple times over the past few years, and it looked like we would be seeing Cruise take flight in June 2020. That date, however, was pushed back to December 2020 after the COVID-19 pandemic caused major disturbances in the entertainment industry.

Now it looks like we’ll have to wait until at least next summer to see Top Gun: Maverick , as the film is set to take flight on May 27, 2022.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning (Part 1) - July 14, 2023

At this point in his career, Tom Cruise could only make Mission: Impossible movies and his millions of adoring fans wouldn’t mind. Since first taking on IMF agent Ethan Hunt with the first entry in the franchise in 1996, Cruise has put his life on the line too many times to count by doing everything from climbing the face of a cliff with no safety gear, climbing the tallest building in the world, holding onto an airplane during takeoff, and the list goes on. Cruise looks to keep up with that trend with Mission: Impossible 7 , in which Ethan Hunt will team up with his old buddies. And while we don’t yet know what the movie is about , the cast, which includes returning members of the IMF team as well as Hayley Atwell , Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, and Esai Morales, has us stoked.

Production on Mission: Impossible: 7 was originally supposed to get underway in February 2020 in Italy, but when the country went into a virtual shutdown , things moved to England before being shut down. Tom Cruise didn’t let COVID-19 stop him from putting his life in danger by filming some insane stunts that will surely up the ante for future installments (more on that next). No surprise here, but all those delays in filming forced Paramount Pictures to push back the release of Mission: Impossible 7 from its original theatrical release date.

Mission: Impossible 8 - June 8, 2024

If Mission: Impossible 7 is a mystery, then its sequel, Mission: Impossible 8 is an even bigger one. Going off comments director Christopher McQuarrie made during a May 2020 appearance on the Light the Fuse podcast, the eighth movie in the franchise will be tied to the events of its most recent predecessor more than ever before . During that appearance, McQuarrie revealed that he is essentially turning one Mission: Impossible movie into two so that he can further explore all the characters similar to how he took a deep dive into Ethan Hunt’s past (including some throwbacks from earlier entries in the franchise) in Mission: Impossible - Fallout . Instead of making one extremely long movie that would require trimming some of the more emotional beats, the director essentially wants to let those stories breathe.

Tom Cruise previously confirmed the existence of Mission: Impossible 8 in January 2019 when he tweeted a short video showing the Mission: Impossible logo with a caption reading “Summer 2021 and Summer 2022.” At the time, the eighth movie was supposed to drop on August 5, 2022, but in wake of everything happening with the movie industry, Paramount Pictures pushed back the theatrical release nearly a year to July 7, 2023. According to Variety , both Mission: Impossible sequels were supposed to be shot back-to-back in order to be ready for the original release dates, but we’ll have to see how that goes with all of the delays.

Luna Park - TBD

Originally, the word was that Tom Cruise was going to join his Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman for Luna Park before playing Ethan Hunt again in Mission: Impossible . While that didn't happen, there's every reason to believe that Luna Park will happen once schedules align. The description of Luna Park sounds like what is essentially a heist movie, except the thing being stolen is a power source, and the place it's being stolen from is the moon. Cruise has been solid in science fiction in recent years, so we're all for it. We'll know this one is a go when more cast is announced, as a heist movie will certainly need a team.

It has long been speculated that Luna Park and the Tom Cruise sci-fi movie that will actually be shot in outer space are one and the same, considering both are to be directed by Doug Liman. Not familiar with the Tom Cruise/Space X/NASA team-up movie? Cruise and Liman are scheduled to be passengers on Space X’s Dragon Axiom when the spacecraft goes to the International Space Station in October 2021. Details are light at this point in time, but expect to hear more about the project in the next year or so as we get closer to the historic launch. If nothing changes, Cruise and Liman will film the first movie actually shot in space. I mean, can you imagine anyone but Tom Cruise shooting a movie in the vacuum of space? Hopefully we’ll find out how Cruise’s signature charm and love of out-of-this-world stunts stand up in zero gravity.

Live Die Repeat And Repeat (Edge of Tomorrow 2)

Tom Cruise will always be known for his Mission: Impossible movies and classics like Top Gun , Jerry Maguire , and Risky Business , but the action star has also been in his fair share of science fiction films throughout his career. Since the start of the 21st Century, Cruise has had leading roles in Minority Report , War of the Worlds , Oblivion , and Edge of Tomorrow or Live Dive Repeat . And with talk of a potential Edge of Tomorrow 2 or Live Die Repeat and Repeat in the works, it’s only a matter of time before Cruise’s William Cage returns in some shape or form (or time loop).

While Edge of Tomorrow wasn't a literal blockbuster, it was a successful box office film both financially and with fans. While a sequel to the film hasn't been given an official announcement, Christopher McQuarrie and other hired screenwriters are involved. Tom Cruise and Doug Liman are basically working together on a semi-permanent basis these days so this one will happen eventually. Emily Blunt previously said the script for Edge of Tomorrow 2 was being worked on, and in March 2020, the star of A Quiet Place sounded pretty optimistic about the future of the rumored follow-up to the underrated action flick. Hopefully we’ll learn more about Live Die Repeat Repeat here pretty soon, but with Cruise, Liman, and McQuarrie being extremely busy with other projects, we might be waiting on this one for quite some time. I just hope it’s not as long as the break between the Top Gun movies.

Those are all the upcoming Tom Cruise projects we can expect to see in theaters at some point in the next couple of years. Make sure to check CinemaBlend’s 2020 and 2021 movie release guides for the latest information on these titles as well as all the other great theatrical releases slated to come out in the coming months.

Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.

Running, jumping, looking: is the new Mission Impossible the Tom Cruisiest film Tom Cruise has ever made?

Will the actor’s latest release deliver all of our favourite Tom Cruise moves and save the summer box office?

read Peter Bradshaw’s five-star review why Dead Reckoning is the most uncannily topical M:I film yet

T his is shaping up to be a profoundly depressing summer for the movie business. Films that would have traditionally been a slam-dunk have tanked at the box office. A Pixar movie has tanked and even Indiana Jones has all but sunk without trace . So, naturally, you might be a little worried about Tom Cruise .

His new film Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One comes out in a matter of days. And although last year’s Top Gun: Maverick cemented him as the only movie star people actually want to pay to watch any more, the instability of the theatrical business model means that the new release is anything but a sure thing.

But I think I can help. My suspicion is that audiences will only pay to see Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One if they can be assured that they will be presented with the Tom Cruiseiest Tom Cruise film that Tom Cruise has ever made. So with that – and beware that some of what is written below might constitute the lightest of spoilers – here’s a rough breakdown of how the film deals with all the main Cruise categories.

Does Tom Cruise jump off a tall thing on a motorbike?

Yes. And you know he does. Cruise jumping off a tall thing on a motorbike is the central pillar of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’s entire marketing strategy. When he filmed the scene of him jumping off a tall thing on a motorbike, it immediately went viral on social media. When the Mission: Impossible production team packaged together a video of Tom Cruise preparing to jump off a tall thing on a motorbike, by repeatedly flinging himself out of an aeroplane, it went just as viral. So the question you should be asking yourself is this: is the scene of Tom Cruise jumping off a tall thing on a motorbike any good? The answer is: oh goodness, yes!

Does Tom Cruise run?

Yes. A Tom Cruise movie isn’t a Tom Cruise movie unless he’s seen legging it across some exotic locale at full pelt. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is no exception. We get two extremely good running scenes here: one when he runs across a roof, and another where he sprints through the streets of a major European city so comprehensively that he effectively becomes a workable alternative to Google Street View.

Esai Morales and Cruise in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.

Does Tom Cruise get into a car chase?

Yes. You probably knew this because you saw the paparazzi shots of it being filmed in a different major European city a couple of years ago. There’s strong competition – the Paris bike chase in Mission: Impossible – Fallout was breathlessly thrilling, plus both of the Jack Reacher films were basically just an excuse for Cruise to drive a car really fast – but the car chase here might be the best of his career. Or anyone’s career. It’s really long and really, really good.

Does Tom Cruise look deep into the eyes of an assailant and say “It’s OK”?

Yes. This might not necessarily be a category that sells a lot of tickets, but a key component of all good Tom Cruise films is the moment when he puts his hands out like Chris Pratt talking to a velociraptor and says “It’s OK,” in a calm and authoritative voice to a baddie. Sometimes this happens when he is trying to defuse a situation before a fight, and sometimes it happens straight after a fight, when Cruise is trying to convince a screaming villain that they aren’t as badly injured as they think they are. If you enjoy these moments, this film is basically your Christmas.

Does Tom Cruise ride a motorcycle without a helmet?

Yes. And I wish he wouldn’t. It really makes me very nervous and it doesn’t set a good example to children.

Hayley Atwell and Cruise in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.

Do several characters spend an inordinate amount of time explaining just how clever and dangerous and strong Tom Cruise’s character is?

Yes. Remember in Jack Reacher, when almost the entire first half of the film was taken up with a long procession of high-status characters explaining in granular detail how strong and clever Jack Reacher is? Something similar happens here. Before the film even really gets going, there are two separate scenes where powerful characters warn each other about what a dangerous and unstoppable maverick Ethan Hunt AKA Tom Cruise is. However, unlike Jack Reacher, at no point in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One do female characters stop what they’re doing and ogle simply because Cruise is in their general vicinity. This, unfortunately, is a letdown.

Does Tom Cruise say that something is going to happen, and the baddies don’t believe it, and then it happens and they are confounded?

No. And speaking of letdowns, this is perhaps the biggest of all. The best thing that Cruise ever does in any film – he’s done it in Jack Reacher, American Made and Edge of Tomorrow – is walk up to a bunch of hostiles and calmly say something such as: “In five seconds, that telephone is going to ring. And when it does, you guys are in deep shit,” and they’re all like: “Hey, this clown thinks he can read the future. Screw you, clown,” and then five seconds later the telephone rings and they’re all like: “Uh-oh,” and Cruise punches three of them in the throat. This is the best thing that Tom Cruise ever does in any film, and yet it does not happen in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. Perhaps they’re saving it for part two.

And there we have it. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One contains almost every element you could possibly expect from a Tom Cruise film. It is a profoundly Tom Cruisey Tom Cruise movie. I don’t want to tempt fate, but I think the box office is going to be fine.

Every upcoming tom cruise movie.

Tom Cruise has a couple of projects coming up in the near future, including sequels, action movies, and even one filmed in space.

Tom Cruise is one of the most popular actors of his generation, and here’s every upcoming movie he will appear in. Tom Cruise was born on July 3, 1962, and made his big-screen debut in 1981 in the romantic drama Endless Love , where he only had a bit part. Later that year, he had a supporting role in the drama Taps , which helped open more doors for him in the entertainment world. Cruise’s breakthrough came in 1983 with the teen comedy Risky Business , where he played the lead role. Later, in 1986, his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun helped cement his superstar status.

Since then, Cruise has worked with a number of directors and explored various genres – from gothic horror with Interview with the Vampire , where he played vampire Lestat, to action spy movies like the Mission: Impossible saga and psychological dramas like Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut . Although he has also been part of less popular and successful projects, such as the 2017 version of The Mummy , Cruise continues to be quite popular with the audience, in big part thanks to the Mission: Impossible franchise, which continues to produce more and more movies, all starring Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt.

Although Mission: Impossible continues to be a priority in Tom Cruise’s career, he already has other projects lined up, of which not much is known, but they will take him on different adventures, including one in outer space. In addition to that, fans are waiting for the highly anticipated sequel to a 1980s classic to arrive, as its release date had to be delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic . Here’s every upcoming Tom Cruise movie:

Top Gun: Maverick

Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick

First on the list of Tom Cruise’s upcoming projects is Top Gun: Maverick , a sequel to the 1986 movie Top Gun . Directed by Joseph Kosinski, Top Gun: Maverick will see Maverick training a new generation of pilots, among those Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller), Goose’s son. This will push Maverick to confront the ghosts of his past and his deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those chosen to fly. Also starring are Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, and Ed Harris. Top Gun: Maverick was originally scheduled for a July 2019 release, and was later pushed to June 2020. Due to the pandemic, Top Gun: Maverick was delayed to July 2021.

Mission Impossible 7 & 8

Tom Cruise Masks Up On Mission Impossible 7 Set For Stunt Rehearsal

As mentioned above, the Mission: Impossible movie series is still alive and keeps on producing new content. The latest entry in the franchise was Mission: Impossible – Fallout , released in 2018. Fans of the series won’t have to worry about the franchise ending with Fallout , as a seventh and eighth movie are in development, with plans of filming back-to-back. Unfortunately, the pandemic also changed those plans, and Mission: Impossible 7 and 8 were rescheduled, with their new release dates being November 19, 2021, and November 4, 2022, respectively.

SpaceX Project

the new tom cruise film

The weirdest and most ambitious project in Tom Cruise’s list of upcoming movies is one that is currently referred to as the “SpaceX Project”. This will take Cruise and company to space , with the purpose of shooting a movie in space on board the International Space Station. The mission is expected to happen in late 2021 and will count with Doug Liman as director, but details on the plot, characters, and more are currently unknown.

Tom Cruise space

Another confirmed project starring Tom Cruise is Luna Park , with Doug Liman also directing. Luna Park has been in development for years and has been referred to as a "passion project" of Liman. Just like SpaceX Project , Luna Park is a sci-fi movie, with the story following a group of renegade employees who “ venture to the moon to steal an energy source ”. Luna Park doesn’t have a projected release date yet, but hopefully, it will see the light soon.

Entertainment | supreme court keeps donald trump on colorado ballot, rejecting 14th amendment push, entertainment, entertainment | if it wasn’t tom cruise or hugh jackman: top candidates for rebecca ferguson’s screaming co-star, the ‘dune’ and ‘mission: impossible’ actor touched off an internet guessing game when she recently recounted being yelled at by an ‘idiot,’ a-list co-star on a film set.

The biggest buzz of film-related speculation this week isn’t who will win trophies at the March 10 Academy Awards but which A-lister screamed at Rebecca Ferguson while they co-starred in a movie.

The Swedish actor, who is best known for the “Dune” and “Mission: Impossible” franchises, touched off this internet guessing game when she recently recounted her heated exchange with a co-star during an appearance on the “Reign With Josh Smith” podcast Tuesday, the New York Post and other outlets reported.

“I did a film with an absolute idiot of a co-star and it doesn’t matter who it was,” Ferguson began.

“I remember there was a moment when this human being was being so insecure and angry because this person couldn’t get the scenes out,” Ferguson shared. “And I think I was so vulnerable and uncomfortable that I got screamed at.

“But because this person was No. 1 on a call sheet, there was no safety net for me,” Ferguson added. “So no one had my back. And I would cry walking off set.”

But Ferguson said she rallied by the next day and stood up for herself. She told her co-star, “You get off my set. You can (expletive) off. I’m gonna work towards a tennis ball. I never want to see you again.” While producers told her, “You can’t do this to No. 1. We have to let this person be on set,’” she replied that “the person can turn around and I can act to the back of the head.”

Ferguson added that this happened “within my last 10 or 12 years.”

Everyone pretty much agrees that it’s wrong that Ferguson had to deal with such a big, raging, fragile ego, though. Hollywood has long been filled with big, raging, fragile egos. But her story still raises the question of who yelled at her.

As Decider writer Liz Kocan wrote , Ferguson provided few clues. She was careful not to use gender pronouns. The only thing she said is that the A-list actor or actress was no. 1 on the call sheet, the project was a movie and that the incident occurred 10 or 12 years ago.

The New York Post and Decider listed many of of Ferguson’s major co-stars. They include Tom Cruise, Hugh Jackman, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Grant, Michael Fassbender, Chris Hemsworth, Ewan McGregor, Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt.

It should be noted that, in her interview, Ferguson clarified that her screaming co-star was not Cruise or Jackman, her co-star in “The Greatest Showman.”

With that, here is a breakdown of the leading contenders to be Ferguson’s unnamed screaming co-star based on reports and social media speculation.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson

The Hayward native, Ferguson’s co-star in the 2014 film “Hercules,” actually rushed to distance himself from her accusations. In a post on X, Johnson wrote, “Hate seeing this but love seeing her stand up to (expletive). Rebecca was my guardian angel sent from heaven on our set. I love that woman. I’d like to find out who did this.”

Unfortunately, Johnson may not have done himself any favors with this post, as Decider’s Kocan pointed out. On one hand, it’s “great that Johnson was quick to jump in with his support,” Kocan said. On the other hand, Johnson’s post may be an example of a self-serving actor “trying to get ahead of the story,” cynics said. Kocan also said that he’s “had his share of ego moments on movie sets, including his notorious rivalry with Vin Diesel, and the role he played in tanking the success of “Shazam‘s” sequel and his own Black Adam franchise.

Jake Gyllenhaal

For Decider’s Kocan, Gyllenhaal is a top contender, even though Gyllenhaal’s collaboration with Ferguson is more recent than 10 or 12 years ago. They co-starred in the 2017 film “Life” with Ryan Reynolds, who isn’t among the top contenders for the screamer.

AUSTIN, TX - MARCH 18: (L-R) Actors Ryan Reynolds, Rebecca Ferguson and Jake Gyllenhaal attend the "Life" premiere during 2017 SXSW Conference and Festivals at the ZACH Theatre on March 18, 2017 in Austin, Texas. (Photo by Michael Loccisano/Getty Images for SXSW)

Nonetheless, Kocan wrote how Gyllenhaal recently made news for his alleged demanding behavior in pre-production for the film “Suddenly.” That film’s director, Thomas Bidegain, told a French magazine about a “humiliating” situation involving Gyllenhaal, according to Variety . The magazine story also described how Gyllenhaal demanded multiple rewrites and rehearsed scenes in a mocking “Pepe Le Pew-like accent.”

During the press tour for “Life,” Gyllenhaal also made some arrogant comments about the art of acting, which may echo what Ferguson’s screaming co-star said to her: “You call yourself an actor?” Gyllenhaal told The Guardian in 2017 that it “seems to me that anybody feels they can be an actor nowadays.”

Ferguson was in the 2016 movie “Florence Foster Jenkins” with both Grant and Meryl Streep. Many social media sleuths are pointing the finger at the “Notting Hill” star who has developed a reputation for being curmudgeonly, the New York Post said.

HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA - MARCH 12: Hugh Grant takes a selfie with a fan during the 95th Annual Academy Awards on March 12, 2023 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by Emma McIntyre/Getty Images)

When another person argued that Streep was the star of the film, still another pointed out that Grant could have been No. 1 on the call sheet the day that he filmed scenes that involved Ferguson.

Someone else wrote : “I’ll bet it was Hugh Grant, I’ve read stuff about him being really rude and hard to work with. He’s even said himself that his female costars probably hate him.”

Michael Fassbender

Fassbender and Ferguson co-starred in the poorly reviewed 2017 serial killer thriller, “The Snowman.” According to The Post, many movie fans believe that Fassbender, famous for his intense roles, was the screamer.

“It’s Michael Fassbender y’all,” one person declared .  “This was definitely Fassbender,” another said.

But others defended Fassbender, based on the way that he and Ferguson appeared to get along well while doing publicity together for “The Snowman.” Still, one person pointed out : “People posting interviews with them together doesn’t prove a damn thing. Publicity tours are part of the job and they’re ACTORS.”

  • Fans can pre-order the figure for $51 USD, reflecting the high-quality design and screen-accurate sculpt of the character.
  • Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire hits theaters on March 29, showcasing the epic return of iconic monsters in an action-packed film.

Everyone’s favorite monsters are stomping back to the big screen this month with the release of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire . While the MonsterVerse makes its epic return this year, it looks like fans can soon add a piece of the franchise to their collection, as HIYA Toys has revealed a new look at their upcoming Godzilla figure, which features the character in his newest evolved design.

The figure features the King of the Monsters with a highly detailed new sculpt, effectively capturing the likeness of the evolved form that he will be taking on in the upcoming film. Standing at 7 inches tall, the figure will come with several articulation joints at the arms and legs, offering fans the chance to pose him to their liking, helping it serve as a stand-out piece in anyone’s collection. Additionally, the figure is highlighted by strong earthy colors that showcase his reptilian side that contrasts nicely with his glowing pink spikes.

The figure is now available for fans to pre-order on the official HIYA Toys website for $51 USD. While the figure may seem a bit pricey for some collectors, it does fall in line with other toys released by the company, and with the screen-accurate sculpt, it should come as no surprise that a high-quality figure would carry a hefty price tag. There is no word yet on when it is set to debut, but expect a release window around Q4 later this year.

‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ Features the Return of Cinema’s Most Iconic Monsters

Legendary’s MonsterVerse continues to expand to new territories in the streaming world with the release of last year’s Skull Island anime alongside Monarch: Legacy of Monsters . However, it isn’t a true monster mash without a large premium screen to experience it with, and fans will soon be able to dive back into the lore of the franchise with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire . The film will feature the return of the titular monsters as they must team up to face Earth’s greatest threat yet, a malevolent primate named Skar King. Adam Wingard returns to helm the project, with Rebecca Hall , Brian Tyree Henry , and Kaylee Hottle returning as well, alongside the appearance of Dan Stevens , Alex Ferns , and Rachel House .

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire debuts exclusively in theaters on March 29, with HIYA’s Godzilla figures hitting shelves later this year. Check out the official look at the toy below.
